Two clubs feature in every Junior Reps final

Two clubs – Parramatta Eels and Sydney Roosters – are enjoying great success in the NSWRL Junior Representatives this year with teams making finals in all four competitions.

Six True Blues – Vanessa Foliaki (Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, Westpac Lisa Fiaola U17s Girls), Keeley Davis (Sydney Roosters, Westpac Tarsha Gale Cup U19s Women).

Corban Baxter (with Davis), Isabelle Kelly (Central Coast Roosters, Lisa Fiaola Cup), Andrew Fifita (Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks, Tarsha Gale Cup) and Boyd Cordner (Sydney Roosters, UNE SG Ball Cup U19s Men) – have coached sides through to the finals in 2025.

It is also the first time Melbourne Storm have made a Junior Reps finals match.

The Eels finished top of the ladder after nine rounds undefeated in UNE SG Ball Cup (Under 19s Men), eighth in UNE Harold Matthews Cup (Under 17s Boys), fifth in Westpac Tarsha Gale Cup, and third in Westpac Lisa Fiaola Cup. The Sydney Roosters ‘family’ includes the Central Coast Roosters and the Indigenous Academy Roosters. The Sydney Roosters finished fourth in SG Ball, Central Coast finished second in both Harold Matthews and Lisa Fiaola Cup, and the Indigenous Academy was seventh in Tarsha Gale Cup.

All four Junior Reps feature a top-eight finals format across four weeks starting with Qualifying and Elimination Finals in Week One this Saturday and Sunday (11-12 April).

“Parramatta didn’t make the Under 17s Boys finals or Under 19s Women’s last year, so they had a real look at their pathways,” NSWRL Head of Competitions Yvette Downey said.

“They shuffled things around, made a few new staff appointments and it’s paid off. It’s a credit to Jamie Shephard, who is Head of Pathways, and the work he’s done.

“The Roosters have also done incredible work over the season to maintain their high standards and consistency.”

Westpac NSW Blues Women’s coach John Strange is Head of Female Pathways at the Roosters with James Hanson as Operations manager for both male and female pathways. Steve Deakin is the Head of the Central Coast Academy.

“The Storm also needs to be recognised for the work they are doing as it’s the first time they’ve made a finals series of Junior Reps,” Downey said.

“They have been around for several years but they were run by Victoria Rugby League and were known as the Thunderbolts and then the VRL Storm.

“But last year Melbourne Storm took over the pathways and they should be congratulated for that investment.”

Other highlights after nine rounds are:

Raiders have made the Lisa Fiaola Cup finals in their inaugural season and Fiaola is the club’s Well-Being and Education Manager.
Penrith Panthers have teams in both the Tarsha Gale Cup and Lisa Fiaola Cup without having a NRLW team.
There are three clubs trying to defend their 2024 premierships – Warriors in Harold Matthew Cup, Illawarra Steelers in Tarsha Gale Cup, and Canterbury-Bankstown

The summer squads and coaching staff for the Rabbitohs pathways teams are taking shape with the squads all coming in for their induction meetings this week ahead of the commencement of the 2025 season.

Over 200 players will take part in summer training squads across the male and female pathways at the South Sydney Rabbitohs for 2025, including players in the men’s open age NSW Cup squad.

The men’s under 21s Jersey Flegg Cup squad, the men’s under 19s SG Ball Cup squad.

Women’s under 19s Tarsha Gale Cup squad, the boys’ under 17s Harold Matthews Cup squad, the girls’ under 17s Lisa Fiaola Cup squad, and the boys’ under 16s development squad.

The players in each summer squad, as well as coaching and training staff, met over three nights this week for induction meetings, outlining the expectations of each person and each team as part of the Rabbitohs pathways system for 2025.

Endeavour in Buckley & Uni grand finals

On Tuesday 10 September, our Under 14 NSWCHS Buckley Shield team took on Westfields Sports High School in the semi final of the Buckley Shield competition.

After going down to Westfields in the final round of the competition, we knew we were in for a tough game but were also confident that we could match the boys from Westfields if we played to our strengths.

The game was evenly matched in the opening 15 minutes with both teams trading sets and coming up with high quality play.

A break down the right edge by Jack McKevett was finished off with a try under the posts to Cooper Shephard.

After defending our try line for 2 sets we eventually broke and Westfields evened up the scores 6 all.

Westfields kicked a field goal with 30 seconds to go before half time after a very evenly contested first half.

The second half continued where the first half left off with both teams going end to end.

A try to Chad Kamara after a jinking run back towards the posts gave Endeavour a 12-7 lead.

Westfields hit back with another try after a play the ball error adjacent to the posts. Fortunately, the conversion from right next to the posts, hit the left upright and the score remained 12-11.

A break away run by Chad Kamara was stopped centimetres form the line and Westfields scrambled to prevent us from scoring.

The final minutes saw heart rates rising and tensions building but the scramble defence and will to win from the Endeavour boys prevailed.

Despite a last second charge down the field and a kick over the defensive line, we held on for a memorable 12 -11 win.

The boys will play in Cessnock next Tuesday for a chance to win the NSWCHS Buckley Shield.

In a thrilling University Shield clash, Endeavour SHS triumphed over Illawarra SHS in a hard-fought contest.

Endeavour’s standout performances came from Jamie Curran and Cruz Parkin, who were outstanding after they returned from their Peter Mulholland Schoolboy Cup campaign, driving the team forward.

Spencer Swann and Liam Challenor expertly navigated a tough first half, battling against a huge breeze to maintain momentum.

Both teams displayed immense spirit, respect, and determination throughout.

Illawarra SHS fought valiantly, but Endeavour’s superior tactical execution proved decisive, earning them a well-deserved victory in a competitive encounter.

Endeavour will now play Hunter SHS in the Grand Final on Tuesday 17 September at Cessnock.

Final Score: 32-4

Dragons break 32-year drought

The St George Dragons have secured their first UNE SG Ball Cup Premiership in 32 years after defeating the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs 40-18 at today’s Grand Final at CommBank Stadium.

The Dragons drought stretched back to 1992 but today they also secured the club’s fourth Under 19s premiership.

“We were well aware of it being such a big occasion for the club,” Dragons coach and former Bulldogs NRL player, Willie Talau, said after the win.

“Hopefully this is a reflection of the direction the whole club is heading.

“I’m happy we got to showcase our skills.”

They did that in an eight tries to four win, watched by St George Illawarra NRL coach Shane Flanagan.

Dragons wingers Jesse Williams and Zachariah Nachar both bagged doubles while five-eighth Shadi Hammoud had the ball on a string with his kicking game being a key factor in the Dragons win.

St George back rower Jacob Halangahu was named Player of the Match while Bulldogs captain Mitchell Woods was named Player of the Series.

The Bulldogs started the game strong in attack and wasted no time opening their scoreboard, with a try in the opening minute of the game.

Working their way to the 10-metre line, the ball was quickly shifted out to the left before a nice flick pass from fullback Roy Tatupu found winger Hamish Wilson, who scored in the corner (4-0).

It didn’t take the Dragons long to draw level, off the back of a penalty St George found themselves in great field position.

Sending the ball out to the right, Hammoud sent a cut out pass to Nachar who scored in the corner (4-4).

Holding all the momentum the Dragons went on to post four unanswered tries in 27 minutes to take their lead out to 26-4 heading into the break.

St George started the second half how they finished the first, with strong running which saw the Red-V players march their way up the field on each set.

The score was extended in the 37th minute through centre Lyric Craft-Te Moananui regathering the ball off a fifth-play kick before fending off a Bulldogs defender to score (32-4).

Off the back of a Bulldogs knock on, the Dragons were back in Bulldogs territory once again.

Quick hands from the Dragons fullback Tyler Peckham-Harris saw the No.1 send a quick pass out ball to Nachar who crossed for his second of the day (36-4).

The Bulldogs found the line for the second time in the game in the 36th minute when winger Ratu Rinakama found space out on the left edge to race down the sideline to score (36-8).

With 16 minutes remaining the Dragons were not finished scoring another four-pointer through centre David Afu, who pushed out the lead even further.

Two late tries to the Bulldogs brought the final score to 40-18.

Bulldogs complete the perfect season in Lisa Fiaola Cup

Winger Asha Taumoepeau-Williams collected four tries as Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs etched their place in history with a convincing 36-0 win over the Wests Tigers in the inaugural Grand Final of the Westpac Lisa Fiaola Cup.

Taumoepeau-Williams continued what she’s been producing all season for the Under 17s girls.

She had 11 tries coming into today’s decider and ratcheted that up to 15 by the end of the match.

But the one to snatch Player of the Match was hooker Mary-Jane Taito for her scheming work around the ruck and her relentless defence.

Former dual international Lisa Fiaola presented the match ball to Taito and congratulated five-eighth Evelyn Roberts, who scored two tries today.

Evelyn Roberts was named Player of the Series.

Bulldogs coach Michael Stuart had warned his team not to expect everything to go their way in the finals even though they had been the dominant team all season to finish as Minor Premiers.

“Finals is a whole new competition, so we prepared a little bit differently to reflect that,” Stuart told nswrl.com.au

The Bulldogs beat the Newcastle Knights 22-4 in last weekend’s Semi-final to concede just one try in two matches while scoring 13 of their own.

“The girls deserve it, they’ve had a long, hard seven months and this is just the icing on the cake,” Stuart said.

“We’ve got a lot of local girls in the team. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a team bond and come together as quick as these girls have.”

As for his winger’s four tries: “She’s only 15; turns 16 in November; and she’s a superstar.”

Taumoepeu-Williams said she had scored four tries before for her junior club in New Zealand.

“But it feels good to do it today,” she said. “We’ve bonded so well in a short amount of time. My teammates are my friends and like family.”

And as for the secret to scoring so often in a grand final?

“I just trusted my team.”

This was the Bulldogs 10th straight victory – eight in the regular season and two finals.

It might have been first versus fifth on the ladder, but the Wests Tigers mustered a fine Semi-final win with a 32-14 upset over the second-placed Illawarra Steelers.

Although they tried hard, they were denied possession today and were outclassed in the middle and on the edges.

A try in the opening minute, and then three more in a six minute period later in the first half, helped the Bulldogs to a commanding 18-0 half-time lead.

They gobbled up possession, restricting the Wests Tigers to only two entries into their territory for the first 30 minutes.

It was the Bulldogs right edge that shone – three of their first four tries came down that channel.

The first try was off a Tigers mistake in the opening set. On the third play the Bulldogs shot the ball through the hands for Taumoepeau-Williams to score his first for the day – her 12th for the season.

She followed up with a second in the 18th minute after a neat chip kick from halfback and skipper Olivia Vaalele.

The other first-half tries came from second rower Aliahana Fuimaono – cousin of Westpac NSW Sky Blues utility Taliah Fuimaono – who put on a mighty left fend to see her way to the chalk.

Then in the 20th minute five-eighth Evelyn Roberts stepped off her left foot, then her right, for a fine individual try.

The Wests Tigers were awarded the only penalty of the first half but were unable to capitalise.

In the second half the dominance continued with another three tries, including Taumoepeau-Williams grabbing her third and fourth.

Roberts bagged her second and centre Lahnayah Daniel got onto the scoresheet supporting Roberts, who drew in the defence on the left edge.

The win in the metropolitan version of the Lisa Fiaola Cup followed a 22-8 win by the Western Rams 22-8 over the Northern Tigers last March in the regional NSW competition of the same name.

QRL Junior grand final previews

Grand final day has arrived for the Harvey Norman Under 19s and Cyril Connell Cup.

Game 1 Suncorp Stadium – 16 May

With both premiership deciders to be played as part of a footy extravaganza at Totally Workwear Stadium on Saturday, April 13.

Following on from the two Queensland Under 17 City v Country clashes – four teams from the Queensland Rugby League’s statewide competitions will chase their piece of history.

In the Cyril Connell Cup, the Redcliffe Dolphins will take on the Townsville Blackhawks while in the Harvey Norman Under 19s the Brisbane Tigers will meet the Mackay Cutters.

Here are the coaches’ thoughts ahead of this weekend’s grand finals.

Harvey Norman Under 19

Brisbane Tigers v Mackay Cutters

Brisbane Tigers coach Damien Pratt: “What impressed me most about our semi-final win was the spirit of which the girls played in.

They were really up for the contest and really challenged themselves.

We were very focused on what we needed to do and executed the way we wanted to.

That helped and now we’re playing in the grand final. At our first training on Tuesday night, we spoke about how we’ve been progressing over the last six weeks.

I really want to see two halves of football the same as one another. We’ve been playing one good half and one okay half so I want to have a complete game to finish our season off.

We don’t know what to really expect from Mackay but from the footage I’ve seen, they’re tough, they have a good kicking game and they’ll come down here wanting to win, for sure.

It’s the first ever Harvey Norman Under 19 grand final and we spoke about this a couple of weeks ago when we knew we were playing in the semi-finals.

It’s been the goal for all of us to look at and it would be an absolute honour for the club, the girls and everyone that’s been involved in this journey for the last five to six months to win the premiership.

To do it at home would be fantastic as well.”

Harvey Norman Under 19 grand final team list

Mackay Cutters coach Matt Sanders: “The conditions certainly weren’t ideal in last week’s semi-final and we probably started pretty poorly and the Western Clydesdales jumped out to an early lead.

But the girls didn’t panic, didn’t play out of character, and by halftime we had the lead. By no means was it comfortable but we did enough to win the game.

It pleased me being able to win when we weren’t at our best.

Moving into this week, we did touch on the occasion of the grand final on Tuesday night.

Not everyone gets to play in a state final and certainly not the very first state final for that competition.

The girls are keen on the idea of getting that piece of history.

We’ve looked at Brisbane and what they bring to the table.

They have very good strengths but we’ve found some areas to focus on.

We’re confident we can get out there and execute our game plan and definitely give it a real good crack this weekend.

For us as a club, we’re a regional club so with that comes a lot of commitment.

We’ve got players who travel 150km just to get to training. They love football, they’re so committed, and the way this club and town has really got behind us this last week or so,

I know how much it would mean to the club and the girls.

They give up so much of their time to be at training.

If we were able to get it done, it would be such a great reward for their commitment and love of the game.”

Redcliffe Dolphins coach Larry Dickson: “I don’t think we were great in the first half of our semi-final last week.

I think we started well but went to sleep. But what impressed myself and the rest of the coaching staff was our resilience in the second half.

We completed at nearly 92 per cent and that’s what got us home.

Completions and discipline will be our focus again ahead of this Saturday.

The Blackhawks are a very good footy side, a very disciplined footy side.

They’re coming in injury-free. We’re not quite that lucky but I’ve watched a few of their games and they’re just dangerous all across the park.

They play a different style of football to what we play down here.

But we’re not going to change for anyone and we haven’t all year. We’re going to play the football that’s got us here.

This weekend would be pretty big for the boys. It’s all about the team, it’s all about those boys out there playing and those boys that have represented that jersey this year.

It would be big for them and something they will carry forever.”

Cyril Connell Cup grand final team lists

Townsville Blackhawks coach Nathan Norford: “What I liked about our semi-final performance was us responding to a game plan and executing that and then following through with some of their strengths.

That was obviously really impressive but we know there’s a next level to go and they boys will have to improve again to beat Redcliffe.

The major factor for us is game management and understanding the flow of a game and what’s needed when. We need to make sure we match the Dolphins physically.

They’ve had some very close games, some very physical games and we need to match that. They’re a well-drilled side with quality in their spine. They take smart decisions when they need it.

We’ll need our halves to stand up as well. They have arguably one of the best locks in the competition, who we’ll have to shut down, and quality forwards and outside backs.

They have quality across the whole park.

When it comes to the Cyril Connell Cup, it’s been uplifting to see finals back again.

It gives us an opportunity for kids in country areas to play against the high quality of the city areas and see the standard they set that we make sure we’re maintaining.

They have the opportunity to test themselves against the best players in the state.”

Dragons dig deep to claim back-to-back Laurie Daley Cups

South Coast Illawarra Dragons have claimed back-to-back SLE Laurie Daley Cups after a thrilling 26-24 win over a gallant Monaro Colts in the Grand Final at Woy Woy Oval today.

The Dragons were forced to dig deep after the Colts surged to an 18-14 lead early in the second-half but stormed home with back-rower and Player of the Match Jarrah Treweek sealing the result with his third try for the game.

“That was a game between two great sides,” Dragons coach Peter Hooper said.

“They gave us a touch-up early in the rounds and we did a lot of homework on trying to stop their middle forwards and I think we did a pretty good job today.”

It was a gutsy effort by the Colts, with hooker Xavier Cacciotti stealing the show after grabbing all four of their tries.

It was the second time Cacciotti had bagged a quartet against the Dragons after he also grabbed four tries in the 40-16 win over them in Round Two.

“He’s a very, very good player,” Colts coach Brenden Bradley said.

“He’s played a lot of SG Ball this year and I think the world is his oyster. Very smart, very tough, good speed, he’s an all-rounder.

“We probably just put a little bit too much pressure on ourselves today with a lot of turnover and possession and had to do a lot of defence in the first half.”

They got off to a tough start after back-rower Mark Connors fumbled the kick-off over the sideline and were lucky on another occasion after Dragons centre Clay Baldock lost the ball with a try beckoning.

Conceding back-to-back penalties put them under further pressure and the Dragons looked like they had made them pay after fullback Jackson Rieck fired a cut-out pass for Toby Rumble to score in the corner.

The last pass was ruled forward and the try was disallowed.

Defending Champions finally broke the deadlock when Rieck picked up back-rower Jarrah Treweek

Who used his strength to push through the defence before stretching out to plant the ball down over the line. Rieck missed the conversion to leave the score at 4-0.

The Dragons went further ahead after Rumble showed great speed to make a break down the sideline with Colts fullback Alexander Sweeney coming up short after making a desperate lunge in the last line of defence.

Rieck had no issues with the conversion this time to extend the lead to 10-0.

The Colts pegged one back after hooker Xavier Cacciotti dived over from dummy-half for his first try of the afternoon. Blake Hovi landed the extras to reduce the deficit to 10-6.

The Dragons regained the ascendency in the final minute before half-time when Rieck picked up Treweek again.

The back-rower dummying to his outside before fending off the goal-line defence to grab his second try for the match. Rieck missed the conversion to leave the score 14-6 at half-time.

Cacciotti started the second half in blistering fashion after grabbing consecutive tries to put the Colts in front 18-14.

His first for the second half came after he backed up Hovi close to the line while his second was another dive close to the line.

Illawarra SC Dragons roared back to life when captain Ashton O’Dea turned a nice ball back inside for Hodges to make a break, who in turn picked up centre Darnell Te Ahuru on his outside to score. Rieck landed the conversion to put the Dragons back in front 20-14.

“We’ve been working since November and today no matter how uncomfortable we got I knew we’d come out the other end at certain patches,” Hooper said.

“Obviously Jarrah twice pulled up for a nice play on that edge, and seeing Jarrah score his third try if you’re pushing up in that area, we don’t get the win.

“It’s very pleasing that we’ve been working for six months for here.”

Hodges backed that play up after putting his halfback Jarrod Tiyce away who found Treweek in support to grab his third try for the afternoon. Rieck landed the conversion to extend the lead and give the Dragons some breathing space at 26-18.

Cacciotti set up a thrilling finish when he dived over the line for his fourth try of the day but the Colts turned the ball over in the final minute and the Dragons held on for a memorable 26-24 win and make it consecutive premierships.

“We won last season so this is really good because it’s really hard to make a second Grand Final let alone win it,” Hooper said.

“I’m just really pleased for the boys for the amount of work they’ve done, they believed in themselves and they got what they deserved today.”

Winger Lorima Rokosuka helped himself to a second half double as NSW Combined High Schools held off the fast-finishing NSW Combined Catholic Colleges to qualify for the under 15s final at the national all-schools championship.

NSWCHS, thanks to the guile of their halfback Alex Joseph Isdale, looked to be cruising into the final against NSW Combined Independent Schools when they raced to 20-0 lead midway through the second half at Moreton Daily Stadium in Redcliffe.

Rokosuka was the hero to that point, helping himself a a rapid-fire double, the second off a smart pass from centre Lisiate Mackay-Filihia.

The game changed dramatically late in the second half as NSWCCC responded with three tries in quick succession. Winger Hunter Bell crossed for one while the other two came from the front row bookends – Simon Sisifa and Charbel Kheirallah.

Sisifa picked up a loose pass and caught the NSWCHS defence napping as he crossed beside the posts. Then Kheirallah set up a nerve-jangling finish as he used pure power to force his way over the line.

The conversion reduced the gap to four points but time proved NSWCCC’s enemy as their last throw of the dice went to ground.

Back rower Ali Hicham-Karnib was named man of the match for the NSWCHS while Isiah Wynbergen-Titoko picked up the honour for NSWCCC.

REPLAY: Western Australia v Northern Territory (15 Years)

Replay: ASSRL National Championships – NT v WA (15)

Two late tries in four minutes dragged Western Australia to a last-gasp 18-10 victory over Northern Territory in a 15 years schoolboy thriller this morning.

The West recovered from a 10-nil deficit to hit the front for the first time seven minutes from fulltime before adding another try three minutes from the end.

The Territory had bounced out to an early advantage before the West centre Jeremiah Grant crossed, followed soon after by winger William Blair.

The deadlock breaking try by Grant came courtesy of a left side raid when halfback Tamarau Haimona went to his edge forward Majah Mabbett who offered a pass to Grant to score.

Western Australian led 14-10, then went ahead 18-10 as the clock wound down.

The men of the match were Jack Miller (Territory) and Gabriel Salele’a (Western Australia).

The Territory opened the scoring when Will McCallum was rewarded for a just in case’’ play, diving on a loose ball in the in-goal area after a cross field kick by five-eight Jack Miller.

Miller had chipped for his outside men, but after a scramble by two players, the ball popped unexpectedly onto the ground and McCullum (MacKillop College, ACT) was the man on the spot to bury his body on top of the ball.

Busy Territory dummy half Cole McCormack was next to score, diving over from dummy half.

McCormack had early peppered WA with a number of dummy half probes and his try from close range seemed to catch Western Australia by surprise after the boys from the West had defended the side to side ball movement well.

Western Australia then went within a whisker of crossing after second rower Aaron Leafe set sail for the corner following his team’s first break

But he was reeled him in with a classic covering tackle 1m out.

However Western Australia were rewarded soon after when Rihare Te Rauna crashed over, reducing the Goannas margin to 10-4.

Indeed the West would have drawn level if not with stoic goal line defence after centre Jeremiah Grant had been put into a hole right on the line.

Both teams then settled into a second half tug-of-war, with the West cracking the game open late with two tries.

REPLAY: First Nations Goannas v Victoria (15 Years)

VICTORIA have come back from the dead to steal a draw against the Goanna’s in the latest Under 15s match at the All Schools Championship.

Down 24-12 midway through the second half, the Victorian’s steamed home to steal a 30-30 draw.

Locked at 12-12 following a toe-to-toe first half fight, Lamontoe Banderson crashed over from dummy half to give the Goanna’s the lead.

Up 18-12 following the conversion, the Goanna’s went in again just two minutes later when Blake Sloane dived on a grubber to make it a comeback mission for Victoria.

And the boys from down South accepted and scored two converted tries to level the match.

But the Goannas reclaimed the lead when Caesar Yeatman scored in the 45th minute

REPLAY: Queensland Maroon v NSW CIS (15 Years Semi-final)

NSW Combined Independent Schools fullback Callum Grantham was a hero twice within the space of five minutes when he booted his side into the 15 years grand final this afternoon.

With the scores tied 14-all in extra time, Grantham slotted the winner to give his side a 16-14 win over a crest fallen Queensland.

Grantham kicked the winning penalty goal from 38m out on an angle to win the clash – after also nailing a 40m penalty 90 seconds from the end of regular time to turn a 14-12 deficit into a 14-all scoreline.

In extra time, Grantham then made a break but as he went to side step the Queensland fullback Mereki Warradoo, he was collared high by Warradoo who had been wrong footed.

It was bad luck for Warradoo who was one of Queensland’s best across the championship.

In a drama charged finale prior to extra time, NSW Combined Independent almost scored twice to win the game.

With Queensland leading 14-12, there was drama left, right and centre as NSW Combined Independent five-eight Onitoni Large stepped his way over the line, only to be held up by Warradoo and Joseph Tupuse.

Moments later NSW winger Reilly Caswell set sail for the corner post after Large had remarkably kept play alive with a flick pass, but again Queensland scrambled in numbers, including a tackle by outstanding Queensland centre Joseph Tupuse.

Late in the first half NSW Combined Independent five-eight Large worked his magic just before halftime to get his side on the board, and then early in the second half he worked a wide blindside, putting his centre Heamasi Makasini away who found winger Reilly Caswell.

The Knox Grammar 400m track and field runner put on the after burners, blazing away from trailing defenders. With Grantham’s conversion, NSW Combined Independent’s led 12-10.

But Queens;and struck back hard, with inform centre Liu Lee bursting down the left edge and putting Dolphins-signed fullback Warradoo striding over on what will be his home ground in 2023. That try put Queensland ahead again 14-12.

Queensland almost wrapped it up nine minutes from fulltime, but forward Jarius Halahala dropped a slippery ball on a muddy section of the ground as he was reaching out to score next to the posts.

Early in the game, Queensland drew first blood when Lee put his Marsden SHS team mate Benson Tau over to score wideout after seven minutes. Braithen Scott’s conversion made it 6-nil.

Scott then ran to the line to give his other centre, the right side running Joseph Tupuse, crashing over for a 10-nil break.

Lee and Tau then combined with a try saving tackle on opposite winger Brooklyn Heath.

NSW Combined Independent Schools fielded a gigantic forward pack which Queensland did well to hold across the duration.

PREVIEW: Cobbo 2.0 ready to become his own man of league

He may be the brother of an NRL superstar and a Queensland Origin pin-up boy, but Murgon SHS’s Shamus Cobbo is happy making his own way in life and not living in the shadow of his older sibling Selwyn.

Selwyn Cobbo is of course the Brisbane Broncos boy wonder and his younger brother Shamus, 15, is playing at the Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League National Championships for the 15 years First Nations Goannas Invitational side.

The Goannas’ campaign continues on Wednesday when they confront Victoria on day four of the championship, all live streamed by KommunityTV.

Shamus Cobbo said while he was “very proud’’ to see his brother playing in the NRL, he wanted to be his own man.

“It is very good, but it is very annoying at the same time,’’ Shamus said.

“I want to make my own mark and not be known by Selwyn, I want to be known by Shamus Cobbo.

“Shamus said every weekend the Broncos’ played there was great excitement in the Murgon and Cherbourg district “when he ran the ball or scored a try’’.

Shamus, a versatile prop who can play in other positions, said he had always loved playing rugby league and representing the Goannas at the national championships was a great honour.

“This is a big moment for all of the boys,’’ Shamus said.”We are very proud.

“Schoolboys from Thursday Island to Leeton, Mt Isa to Campbelltown have made the side alongside Shamus Cobbo.

The four Thursday Island boys who were teammates of Cobbo are Dewron Aitken (Horn Island), Zahdein Pearson-Bowie (Hammond Island), Ezzy Gibuma (Boigu Island) and Jared Charlie (Darnley Island).

Goannas coach Anthony Wilson said former NRL stars Dean Widders had Timana Tahu identified the foursome as players who would benefit from playing at the nationals.

“They were a bit shy on the first day or two, but just love footy, love to get the footy in their hands.

“They are enjoying being around the boys who have played a bit more footy and have fitted in beautifully,’’ Wilson said.

Meanwhile, it was a case of Diesel by name and Diesel by actions as NSW Combined dummy half Diesel Hagan got through a mountain of work in a man of the match performance against the semi-final bound Queenslanders.

Dolphins NRL coach Wayne Bennett will be eagle eyed again today watching six of his pathway juniors playing for the Queensland 15s in the semi-finals – Mereki Warradoo (fullback), Benson Tau (wing), Nixon Pasese (prop), Charlie Dickson (No.13), Brian Pouniu (edge forward) and Jairus Halahala (middle).

Young Sharks stars to benefit from Homestay family support

For young aspiring rugby league players coming from a regional area or from overseas, the transition to life in Sydney, and more specifically the Sutherland Shire, can often be daunting.

Talented youngsters are recruited and brought into the Sharks system to begin their rugby league journeys and to chase the NRL dream, but with the change in lifestyle certainly comes challenges.

However, in an effort to make the move somewhat smoother, the Sharks assign many of these young players to Homestay Families.

So they are best able to concentrate their efforts on training and playing for the Sharks, these families support and provide accommodation for the young relocating players.

The likes of Ronaldo Mulitalo, Will Kennedy and Braydon Trindall are a few examples from the current NRL squad to have benefitted from living with local area Homestay families.

While the Club is appreciative of the families currently accommodating and looking after some of the younger players, they are always looking for those interested in doing similar and being a part of the Sharks Homestay program.

“These young players benefit from a having family environment to support them in their dreams of one day playing in the NRL competition,” Sharks Welfare Manager Jeff Robson said.

“Players would be attending school locally, pursuing an apprenticeship or traineeship, ,maybe working fulltime, whilst fulfilling their training and playing commitments with the Sharks,” he added.

Typically, the players are aged between 16 and 19 and on most occasions would live with the Homestay Family for between one to two years, although sometimes also for a short term, depending on the individual circumstances.

Families are compensated for food and expenses.
