Wavell held their nerve to confirm their spot in the Langer Trophy quarter finals as Redcliffe’s wait for their first win goes on another week. Relive all the action from the LIVE STREAM.

With major points and finals chances on the line, it was the visitors, Wavell SHS, who found their second wind and snuck away with a 20-10 win over Redcliffe in round six of the Langer Trophy.

Neither team could break the deadlock in the opening 10 minutes, with both showing extra effort on the attack and defensive end.

But after 14 minutes, Redcliffe finally found themselves in some good field position, and it was none other than Australian schoolboys player John Fineanganofo who crashed over.

Wavell hit back through a nice inside draw and pass between Carlos Ka and Keyarn Pene, before the visitors were in again just before halftime thanks to some good short-side play on the left-hand touchline from centre Tusi Tofu.

Play resumed in the second half with the score at 10-6, and after Redcliffe’s Loka Toia was held up over the line, the home side drew level with a much-needed try.

Those celebrations didn’t last long though with Wavell SHS marching down the other end minutes later and extending their lead 16-10.

A chip kick in behind was fumbled by the Redcliffe backs and right-side winger Riley Jenkins dived onto the ball to score his first of the afternoon.

With less than three minutes remaining, Toia was sent to the sin bin, and that was all she wrote, with Wavell SHS finishing the match 10-point victors and securing their spot in the quarter finals.

There wasn’t much in this Walters Cup clash, but some strong defensive efforts from Wavell SHS proved the slight difference in a 22-12 victory against Redcliffe SHS.

With both sides chancing their arm in attack and also going toe-to-toe in the defensive line, it was clear from the opening sets that both sides had come to play.

After 10 minutes Wavell opened the scoring by keeping the ball alive and getting it through a number of hands for their left centre to dive over.

A kick restart that landed out on the full wasn’t how Redcliffe SHS wanted to resume play and that was enough of an invite for Wavell SHS to grab their second.

The next kick restart Redcliffe were able to get the ball back before stringing a few simple sets together to get on the scoreboard.

An improved defensive set from Redcliffe wasn’t enough to stop their opposition with Wavell putting up a high ball and adding to their lead.

Neither team was able to gain momentum after the break until Redcliffe crossed the chalk with a much needed four pointer.

Both sides again held their own on the defensive end, with only one final try coming from Wavell SHS before the referee called full time.

Both sides will be looking to snag the two points in round six when Redcliffe State High School welcome Wavell State High School in the Langer Trophy at Kayo Stadium.

Redcliffe will be searching for their first win of the season while the sixth-placed Wavell will hope to secure their spot in the Langer Trophy quarter-finals with a second win of the season.

The crunch clash will be exclusive live streamed on KommunityTV via the Courier Mail on Wednesday afternoon, with the Walter Cup clash kicking the action off at 2.30pm.

Both sides are coming off round five losses but both coaches admitted it was a very different feeling in the post-match sheds.

“It was a different feeling compared to our earlier losses in the season,” Wavell SHS head coach Paul Stanley said following his sides 18-8 loss to Keebra Park SHS.

“The boys know that they played well, we’re getting closer to our best each week so the boys were disappointed but they didn’t have regret for not giving their best effort.”

For Redcliffe, head coach Jay Wilkinson labelled the 69-22 defeat to Marsden SHS as ‘embarrassing’.

“It was a little bit embarrassing on our own turf and on a big day,” he said.

“I think we sat down, had a good chat about it and have all recommitted and to be honest it’s been the best week at training in quite a while so they’ve responded well.”

With the top seven sides progressing through to finals at the end of the regular season, Stanley said it was a big game for both sides.

“We’re not looking at the table at all because those boys will be playing at their absolute best and it’s a bit of a rivalry for the boys given we’re so close and they’re playing against their mates,” Stanley said.

“We know the talent that Redcliffe has across the park plus they’ve got one Queensland and one Australian schoolboy in Loka Toia and John Fineanganofo so it’ll be important for us to limit their involvement.”

Wilkinson said his side’s focus had been on continuous improvement each week.

“Marsden was a blimp as we didn’t improve but we’re focused on these last two games of the year and we’re pretty confident that if we can play our style that we can pick up two wins and finish sixth,” he said.

“That gets us into finals but also keeps us in the competition next year which let’s the boys leave a legacy.

“Both sides would like to have a couple more wins so it’ll be which school comes out with more enthusiasm and which side gives it a real crack.”
