ASSRL National U18 Schoolboys carnival: Jett Cleary leads top five players on day 1

Jett Cleary burst out of the shadow of his famous father and brother in the opening round of ASSC. See the top five players from day one.

Jett Cleary burst out of the shadow of his famous father and brother on Monday as he set alight the Australian Second School Championships with a hat-trick in the NSW Combined Catholic Colleges win over Combined Affiliated States.

The son of Penrith coach Ivan Cleary and younger brother of Panthers and NSW star Nathan Cleary nabbed a pair of tries in the opening half and completed his hat-trick 16 minutes into the second stanza as NSW CCC made light work of their opposition.

The pick of his three tries came 16 minutes into the game when he took a pass, fended off CAS defender and raced 30 metres to score.

Jett Cleary has been a familiar figure in and around the Penrith dressing sheds in recent years, celebrating the Panthers success which has been largely orchestrated his brother and father.

He showed enough on Monday to suggest his time may coming as well. The teenager spent this year as a key figure in the Penrith SG Ball side and is aligned to the Panthers for at least another year, although rival clubs will now sit up and take notice.

TOP 5 PLAYERS FROM DAY ONE

1. Jett Cleary (NSWCCC)

Cleary was the star of the show for NSW CCC in their big win over CAS. Started the tournament as a back-up in the halves but pushing for a stating spot.

2. Cody Hopwood (NSWCCC)

The Newcastle front rower was too big and too strong for his CAS opponents. Was rewarded with a couple of tries as he trampled his opposition.

3. Wilson Decourcey (NSWCCC)

Decourcey, a Penrith centre, was too hot to handle as the NSWCCC made light work of their weaker opponents.

4. Mark Tuialii (ACT)

Classy centre Tuialii showed some silky skills to set up his outside backs and put his side on the path to victory.

5. Patrick Young (NSW )

Bulldogs fans endured a tough weekend but they can take solace in the performance of Patrick Young – son of former Wallaby Bill Young – at the schoolboys titles. He was a rock on the middle of the field for NSWCIS.

He wasn’t the only star for NSW CCC. Penrith SG Ball teammate Wilson Decourcey grabbed a couple of tries of his own along with powerful prop Cody Hopwood, who is locked into the Newcastle Knights having rejecting big offers from elsewhere.

NSW CCC were too slick and powerful for their outgunned opposition, which was largely made up of players from Victoria. However, the CAS enjoyed a moment to savour in the final minutes when Micah Warena crashed over from close to the tryline.

There was still time for Parramatta hooker Zaidas Muagututi’a to sneak over in the final minute as the NSW CCC finished the group stage with a second emphatic victory.

FAMOUS NAME MAKES BIG IMPACT ON DAY ONE

ACT made a flying start against NSW Combined Independent Schools and it saved them in the end as they enjoyed a successful day at the schoolboy titles.

The boys from the nation’s capital raced to a 22-0 lead early in the second half through the skill of halfback Jonah Anderson and the guile of hooker Xavier Caccitotti.

It was all one-way traffic until NSWCIS halfback Toby Rodwell – aligned with the Sydney Roosters – grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck.

Rodwell started the comeback when he threw a dummy and stepped through the ACT defence. Moments later, he set up a try for one of his teammates with another piece of skill.

When Coby Thomas scored in the corner it was on for young and old. ACT held on in the end but it was a nail-biting finale as they secured a 22-16 victory.

TOP FIVE PLAYS ON DAY ONE

Jett Cleary (NSWCCC)

Cleary took a pass early in the game, fended off a defender and beat the fullback in a footrace to the corner. Genuine class.

Max Mercer (ACT)

Showed some great hole running and smart footwork to slice through NSWCIS early in the second half of their game.

Micah Warena (CAS)

The combined side made up largely of Victorian kids had a tough day but Warena got his reward for staying in the fight as he snuck over from dummy half for rather lone try of the day in the infra minutes.

Toby Rodwell (NSWCIS)

It was a tough day at the office for the Combined Independent Schools but Rodwell showed his class as he bamboozled defenders with a monster dummy and step to score.

Galvin shines for NSWCHS

NSWCHS five-eighth Lachlan Galvin is the good news Tigers fans need

It has been a dark week for all Wests Tigers fans, but there is one schoolboy giving them reason to hope at the ASSRL Nationals.

Struddys apparel

It has been a dark week for Wests Tigers fans, but there is one schoolboy giving them reason to hope.

In the space of a week Tigers fans have had to deal with the fact Luke Brooks is leaving for the Northern Beaches, they are lacking a recognised half for next season and they were pasted 74-0 in a historic thumping at the hands of the Cowboys.

It’s been tough.

But there is one shining light in the form of NSW CHS halfback Lachlan Galvin.

In the space of 60 minutes, the Westfields Sports High talent made it clear the future isn’t all doom at Concord, after masterfully steering NSWCHS to a dominant win over NSWCIS on Saturday.

The 17-year-old Campbelltown product, who was previously part of the Eels junior system, will join the Tigers top 30 squad next season.

I am loving it

“I am loving it (at the Tigers),” Galvin said. “I got there last year and I am loving it.

“I just want to focus on my footy, train hard. I go into the Top 30 next year.

“When I got there I looked up to the NRL boys. Wayne Lambkin was the coach at Westfield and he’s the reserve grade coach there now and he’s really helped me and my footy.”

Galvin wasn’t the only future Tiger to impress for the NSWCHS side, with winger Luke Laulilii scoring an impressive double.

The duo have played together at Westfields Sports High for a number of years, and the playmaker said their combination was sound.

“In the Harold Mathews Cup, he (Laulilii) was fullback and we worked really well together,” Galvin said.

“It’s good to play with him he’s very fast. I just have to find him, he gives me a lot of room and he follows me.”

When asked who Galvin models his game off he said it was Queensland five-eighth Cameron Munster.

The NSW Combined High Schools lethal wing combination of Nikora Williams and Laulilii, with Galvin at the trigger, blew away their NSW Combined Independent Schools rivals in a 24-6.

NSWCIS, who also feature a Tigers-bound playmaker in Alex Conti, will have little time to lick their wounds as they return to action at the ASSRL Nationals on Monday.

After a day off the field, the competition returns in a massive way with the first games for the Combined Affiliated States and ACT boys sides.

NSWCIS will cap off a massive day of action against the ACT, while the CAS side will meet a NSW Combined Catholic Colleges side flying off the back of a big win against Queensland on Saturday.

Monday’s action kicks off at Kayo Stadium in Redcliffe with another three rounds of the fast and flashy Schoolgirls Nationals tournament.

BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP

Tigers-bound half shows his prowess as CHS score big win

The NSW Combined High Schools lethal wing combination of Nikora Williams and Luke Laulilii, with Tigers signed five-eighth Lachlan Galvin at the trigger, blew away their NSW Combined Independent Schools rivals 24-6.

In a masterful game, Westfield Sports High School schoolboy Galvin threw his hand up to fill the problematic halves role at the Tigers in the future.

It was a game filled with flair, anticipation, strong running and silky smooth ball playing from the No.6. Ironically, Galvin’s schoolmate Laulillii, who is also signed to the Tigers, had a strong game on the wing as well.

REPLAYS: ASSRL Nationals Day 1 – NSW CHS v NSWCIS (Boys)

Sharks-signed Williams, an Endeavour Sports High School product, also shone brightly, doing a bit of everything off his right wing.

NSWCHS took no time to score their first and it was a brilliant cut-out pass from second rower Logan Spinks who found winger Williams on the right edge.

NSWCHS have started with a win.

NSWCHS have set a high early bar

For their second try, Williams produced a great catch and offload from a Kade Reed crossfield kick and Spinks was in.

From the kick off, Galvin broke the line and ran 70 metres down field to extend his team’s lead at 14-0.

On the stroke of halftime, Laulili got himself on the scoresheet after a quick one-two with Galvin, again.

NSWCIS fought long into the second half and were finally rewarded when yellow-booted middle Patrick Young muscled his way over with eight minutes left.

Forwards strength powers NSW CCC past champions

The NSW Combined Catholic College forwards hit the Queensland schoolboys with a sledge hammer to batter their side to victory 30-6 in game one of the ASSRL under 18 championships at Kayo Stadium.

With a ferocious salvo in both halves, the power game of NSW CCC sent a message to the competition that the side was here to play.

NSW CCC led 18-6 at halftime and then 24-6 just after the break when impressive Parramatta-signed back rower Jacob Halangahu stepped once, then twice and then a third time to cut back and score next to the posts.

With a weight of possession behind them during the opening half, the NSWCCC forwards blasted forward continuously.

Replay: ASSRL Nationals Day 1 – QRSS v NSWCCC (Boys)

Middle men De La Salle Va’a and Finau Latu were enormous, with Latu scoring a pile-driving try following a close to the line charge.

Halves Riley Pollard and Heath Mason were also nifty with inside and outside passes, and it added up to a potent cocktail which saw NSWCCC lead 12-0 and then 18-6 headed into halftime.

NSW CCC fullback Jaxen Edgar also threatened down the middle while hooker Zaidas Muagututi’a was as sharp as a tack.

While NSW CCC also defended strongly, Queensland did bomb two certain tries in either half which would have dragged them back into the match, and had a third disallowed late.

Jezaiah Funa-iuta hits the line hard.

Jaxen Edgar gets the NSW side moving forward.

Queensland were handicapped for a period after edge forward Jett Bryce was sin-binned, and it was a real man the pumps effort to try and withstand NSWCCC’s power game.

And they were also disadvantaged when ball playing, sharp on his feet No.13 John Fineanganofo had an early break with a shoulder injury.

While Queensland never turned their toes up, this NSW CCC was relentless as the Sydney-siders staked an early claim for the title.

Two boys games kick off a monster opening day at Kayo Stadium, which includes the historic first Schoolgirls matches. Catch 14 games LIVE.

Action starts at 10.15am.

Check out the REPLAYS.

NSW Combined Catholic Colleges know they are walking into the lion’s den on the opening day of the Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League Nationals.

But they haven’t come unarmed.

The national championships kick off on Saturday, with a monster day of action including the historic first matches in the ASSRL Schoolgirls Championships.

All of the action kicks off with the tournament’s opening ceremony which will be live streamed from 9am.

WATCH ALL OF THE ASSRL OPENING DAY ACTION IN THE PLAYER ABOVE, CHECK OUT THE FULL DAY ONE SCHEDULE BELOW

The first match of the tournament will pit reigning champions and hometown heroes, Queensland, up against an exciting NSWCCC side from 10.15am.

Queensland have assembled an impressive cast of emerging talent headlined by halves pairing Coby Black and Jaxon Purdue.

It is an ominous task, but one the NSWCCC side is ready to rise to.

With the restructure of the ASSRL Nationals this year, the match becomes a must-win for both sides if they have dreams of playing in the grand final next Friday.

ASSRL HUB: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW, FULL SCHEDULES, DAILY LINKS

“It is a tough game against Queensland first up,” NSWCCC assistant coach Kyle Churchill said.

“We will walk away from that knowing where we stand in the tournament. There is only three games for each team in the tournament, so if we win this we play for first, if we lose we’re playing for third.

“It means we go into the game with a different mindset.

In the past, if you beat a good team early, it was hard to then beat them again in the semi-finals. This year, we don’t have a choice, we have to beat them.”

NSW Combined Catholic Colleges have their own impressive halves ready to fight fire with fire against the Maroons.

Halfback Riley Pollard will play alongside five-eighth Heath Mason, with Panthers young gun Jaxen Edgar lurking out the back of their shape.

Then there is Jett Cleary, the brother of Panthers premiership winner Nathan, waiting to be injected into the game and take over with his controlled kicking game.

It is a recipe that the NSWCCC coaches hope will breed success.

In the other games on the opening day, NSW Combined High Schools will clash with NSW Combined Independent Schools in boys action, while we will stream 12 matches, including every team, of the girls competition.
