Warrington Academy get Australia tour off to perfect start
PENRITH PANTHERS ACADEMY 10-50 WARRINGTON WOLVES ACADEMY
Warrington Wolves Academy started their Australia tour with a very impressive victory over Penrith Panthers Academy at St Dominic’s College, Kingswood, New South Wales on Saturday afternoon.
The Wolves got off to the perfect start when they opened the scoring within the first minute.
Hooker Leyton Haddrell made a great forty metre scoot from dummy half that split the Penrith defence and on the last tackle stand off Junior Westwood’s high kick was patted back by centre James Duffy into the arms of winger Alex Wilson who scored in the left corner.
Scrum half Tommy Rhodes converted from the touchline but then eight minutes later a penalty put the Panthers into the Wolves half and hooker Jett Rudd found scrum half Bryson Read and he passed onto full back Charlie Fischbeck whose long looping pass found winger Finn Macleod in space and he dived over in the left corner.
Just after the half hour the Wolves were camped on the Panthers line and on the last tackle Westwood found second row Alfie Poles and his pass was picked up by centre James Duffy who offloaded to Wilson and he stepped back inside to score on the left.
Rhodes converted and then on the stroke of half time full back Lachlan Webster was held just short.
From a quick play the ball on the last tackle Westwood went from dummy half down the short side and his long ball found Duffy who managed to brush off three defenders to score wide out on the left. Rhodes added the conversion to give the Wolves an 18-4 interval lead.
Two minutes into the second half the Wolves forced an error from Penrith on their own twenty metre line.
That allowed them good field position which was exploited to the full as loose forward Tom Marshall, Rhodes and substitute Charlie Walker combined to find winger Jack Fallon and he forced his way over wide out on the right.
Nine minutes later a bulldozing run from prop forward Isaac Holdsworth saw him scatter several defenders out of his way and then he managed to ground the ball at the left of the posts despite the attention of three defenders.
Rhodes added the conversion.
The Panthers scored their second try when a long kick down field by scrum half Bryson Read was fumbled by the Wolves and Rudd was quickest to react and pick up the loose ball before racing over under the posts.
Fischbeck converted but then just after the hour Westwood and substitute Ewan Irwin combined for the Wolves to find Webster linking into the line and he put Walker over for a try on the right.
From the restart strong carries from substitute Zak Brand, second row Daniel Coop and substitute Kian Stanton got the Wolves inside the Panthers half and Lucas Mulqueeney went from dummy half before putting fellow substitute Charlie McKler through a gap to score on the right.
Irwin added the conversion.
Straight away the Wolves were back on the attack and a great set, the length of the field.
Started by Brand saw Fallon hauled down ten metres short and from a quick play the ball Mulqueeney scooted from dummy half to score wide out on the right.
Irwin converted and then the Wolves scored their fourth try in successive sets when Walker made a brilliant eighty metre break and from a quick play the ball Irwin sent out a superb long ‘cut out’ ball that found Fallon in acres of space to score on the right.
Irwin added the conversion to complete a fantastic 50-10 win for the young Wolves.
After the game Wolves Academy Coach Daniel Hill said: “The lads produced a professional performance in what has been a different looking week for them, with all the travelling we have done.
Once we got into our groove we showed plenty of positives with and without the ball, which saw us run away with the game in the last quarter.
Although a really good result, we are still aware that there is plenty to improve on going into our next game against New South Wales next Saturday.”
