Wests Magpies were too strong for Balmain Tigers in the Harold Matthews and SG Ball Cup at Lidcombe Oval, while Wests Tigers Jersey Flegg Cup side kicked off its season with a big win over the Kaiviti Silktails.

Balmain were too strong for Wests in the opening match of the day with the Tigers defeating the Magpies Under 16s development side 24-8.

Wests Magpies remain at the top of the ladder in the Harold Matthews Cup with three rounds remaining after defeating the Tigers 38-nil.

The Magpies are also doing well in the SG Ball Cup where they sit fourth on the ladder following their 38-10 over the Tigers.

Magpies Coach – Stephen Isdale

It was a special occasion for our boys playing at Lidcombe Oval, a place with so much history, and the boys also knew there were Cubs spots up for grabs.

It was really pleasing to see the team believe in and stick to the processes of what we have been working on.

We knew Tigers had nothing to lose so it was important for us to respect them and not have the mindset of trying to score off every set.

We enjoyed the win and the whole experience at Lidcombe and I was really pleased to see Teancam Epati score on debut.

We now turn our focus to the Bunnies.

Tigers Coach – Tony Bazouni

It was a tough day at the office on Saturday against a formidable opponent in the Magpies, who showed why they are the team to beat in this year’s competition.

There were a lot of positives for us to take from the game, particularly with the development players coming in and getting a taste of junior rep footy.

James Baronovski was a standout for us with an inspiring 60 minute effort, tackling himself to a standstill and taking us forward all day. He picked up both the man of the match and players’ player awards.

Magpies Coach – Joey Saukuru

We started off on the right foot by posting the first two tries but a few incomplete sets allowed Balmain into the game and it was 10-all ten minutes before the break.

Navren Willett scored a long-range try just before half time for us to regain the lead.

After a few choice words from the coach at halftime, the boys found another gear in the second period to score a convincing win.

Tigers Coach – Chris Yates

I’m very proud of the boys who fought back after a slow start to 10-all in very hot conditions.

An intercept right on half-time really hurt us and we then lost two players to HIA and played the last 20 minutes without a bench.

I thought Mark Tannous, Sam Schmitzer and Chad Daniels were very good, as was Henri Young on debut.

Warrington Academy defeat WestsTigers

WESTS TIGERS ACADEMY 18-34 WARRINGTON WOLVES ACADEMY

Struddys – Your Custom Apparel Specialists

Warrington Wolves Academy produced an excellent display to claim a fully deserved victory over Wests Tigers in their second Australia tour game at Kirkham Oval, Camden Valley Way, Elderslie on Saturday afternoon.

The Wolves opened the scoring after twelve minutes.

When a fine thirty yard break from scrum half Joe Hickey put his side on the front foot.

After they then forced a goal line drop out they went down the short side and full back Noah Booth found second row Peter Scott and his ball was collected by winger Jake Thewlis out wide to score in the right corner.

Booth converted from the touchline and then just after the midway point of the half the Wolves forced an error inside the West Tigers twenty metre line.

Centre Deacon Connolly collected the loose ball before being held just short but from a quick play the ball hooker Ben Hartill long cut out ball over the top found Thewlis who squeezed over in the right corner.

Booth added another fine conversion.

Just before the half hour the Wolves moved further clear when a ball on the last tackle from Hartill was picked up by Hickey and he stepped round three defenders to score on the right.

Booth converted and then three minutes later a deep swirling high kick on the last tackle from stand off Adam Whalley was fumbled by the Tigers and from the scrum Whalley found centre Ethan Smith who twisted in the tackle to score on the left.

Booth added the conversion.

Three minutes before the break back-to-back penalties for the Tigers put them deep into Wolves territory.

After stand off Marc Tannous had been held just short Aaron Keppie found fellow substitute Dougie Tuala who crashed over at the side of the posts.

Tannous converted to make the half time score 24-6 to the Wolves as a late penalty attempt from Booth went just wide.

Wests Tigers got off to the perfect start in the second half when a brilliant fifty metre break down the middle from prop forward Jekope Sovau/

In the first set split the Wolves defence and he found substitute Jared Haywood in support to score under the posts.

Scrum half Luke Keppie converted but then four minutes later Sovau was sin binned for a dangerous tip tackle.

Whilst he was off the field the Wolves made the extra man count as substitute Noah High slipped a pass to Whalley whose short ball was collected by second row Nolan Tupaea and he stepped round a defender before offloading to Smith who scored on the left.

Just before the hour the Wolves were over once again when a superb early kick, on the second tackle of the set, from Whalley into the in-goal area saw Tupaea react fastest to ground the ball just before it went dead to score on the left.

Booth converted but then two minutes from time Wests gained a consolation try when substitute Dougie Tuala was held just short but a quick play the ball saw A Keppie find Tuala and he crashed over at the side of the posts.

Tannous added the conversion to make the final score 34-18 to a delighted Warrington Wolves side.

After the game Wolves Head of Youth Ryan O’Brien said: “It was a very good team performance and another brilliant developmental experience for our players.

We were aggressive, physical, disciplined, and went after a bigger West Tigers team from the first whistle.

Whilst we made plenty of improvements from the first game, we still have a lot more to learn and will be working hard to address some key areas in training this week ahead of our game against New South Wales next Saturday.”

Wests Tigers 2022 Jersey Flegg squad

Wests Tigers are pleased to confirm its extended Jersey Flegg squad for the 2022 campaign, which will see the team feature under a new Coach in Scott Kenna.

Kenna, who coached previously at junior levels with Manly-Warringah and NSW U/18’s City Origin, has spent the past few seasons involved with the Wests Tigers Academy program and as Head Coach of the Balmain Tigers’ SG Ball program.

After a strong season that saw the team sitting top of the table and undefeated prior to the competition shut-down, Wests Tigers will again have their eyes set on a positive campaign in 2022 with a number of new local juniors promoted to the squad.

Talented local juniors Brendon Tumeth, Justin Matamua, Henry O’Kane and Michael Tannous will all spend time with the extended NRL squad to start pre-season, along with Lomi Saukuru, Trey Peni, Kade Hill, Fonua Pole, Bray Guyan and Tyrone Roberts.

Wests Tigers Jersey Flegg side will begin their pre-season training preparations in the coming weeks with initial trial matches to take place in late December.

The current extended squad will then be updated to a finalised squad in the lead-up to the competition officially starting in March next year.

The Macarthur Conference rugby league competition will launch in 2022 off the back of substantial Junior rugby league growth in junior development in the South Western Sydney region.

The Conference set up will have Wests Tigers Macarthur Junior Rugby League, Group 6 Junior Rugby League and Group 6 Senior Rugby League all play in combined competitions from under 13 to first grade.

Aim of the new structure is to continue building the foundation for future growth in the area and pathways through to Wests Tigers in the NRL.

The club says that despite having consecutive seasons affected by Covid, Wests Tigers Macarthur and Group 6 competitions enjoyed a healthy rise in participants throughout 2021 by almost 10 percent.

Biggest improvement was in the 13 to 15-year-old range.

At a schoolboys level, Picton Magpies junior Aaron Keppie and Liverpool Catholic Club junior Luke Laulilii, pictured, will both move into the 2022 Harold Matthews team for Western Suburbs Magpies.

Both boys had strong individual seasons that culminated in them winning selection in the NSW Schoolboys merit team.

Finishing the regular season in the top four, the entirety of the Magpies’ Harold Matthews spine and lock are also all eligible for the competition again in 2022.

In more positive news, Wests Tigers said that there were more than 500 applicants for the 2022 Harold Matthews and SG Ball trials in the South West.

And to strengthen its junior development network experienced new coaches have been brought in to the development structure.

Matt Betsey (Head of Pathways), Brett Kimmorley (Pathways Coaching), David Fauonuku (JRL Coaching) and Kate Mullaly (Wellbeing) have recently joined the likes of Paul Sironen (Balmain JRL), Shannon Gallant (Wests & Group 6 JRL, pictured.) and Fita Hala (Talent ID) in delivering the next generation of Wests Tigers talent.

The club says the return of Tim Sheens from England will add further experience and knowledge to the pathways program.

Luke Laulilii of NSWCHS Under 15’s dives in for a spectacular try in today’s Day 2 of the NSW Schoolboys Championships (Photo : Steve Montgomery)

The club says it is also continuing to invest in a number of talented coaches in South Western Sydney, such as Robert Mears, Joey Saukuru, Leon Bott, Joe Galuvao and Nathan Lakeman.

Wests Tigers also enjoy a strong partnership with St Gregory’s College and base the two Western Suburbs junior representative programs from the school with full access to fields, gym, recovery pools, rehabilitation and video review rooms.

As the 2022 season approaches, the club’s annual Brydens Lawyers Wests Tigers Academy continues to operate virtually with a digital execution of the weekly programs for the club’s elite juniors.

The elite group of U/17s and U/19s players from Balmain, Wests and Group 6 regions started the annual academy at the beginning of June prior to lockdown restrictions before adjusting the program to virtual platforms throughout August and September.

A select number of those players will then transition into the 2022 pre-season in November with Wests Tigers as well as their respective junior representative commitments.

Return to Play update junior reps

Wests Tigers can provide the below update for its junior representative players, families, staff and officials as it eagerly awaits the return of the respective competitions in 2022.

The below has been distributed to all involved in those competitions in conjunction with NSWRL, with junior representative seasons scheduled to begin on February 5th, 2022.

When possible, the club will provide another relevant update, as well as any further relevant updates regarding plans for pre-season trials, training schedules and competitions as they become available.

Returning to Play

The NSW Government has announced its “Roadmap to Recovery” which provides details around the opening of state-based sport once we hit the 80% double-dose vaccination target.

Wests Tigers are keen to see the return of rugby league in a COVID-safe and compliant manner — especially for those who have missed footy over the past two seasons — and will continue to work with the advice given by the NRL, NSWRL and relevant Government departments on what the roadmap means for state-based rugby league.

Vaccination

Return to Play update junior reps

Current projections show that Greater Sydney will likely experience eased restrictions for those who are fully vaccinated as early as October 11 (after reaching the 70% double-dose vaccination target).

As an organisation, Wests Tigers will continue to seek health advice and await confirmation from the NSW Government on this and recommend that all involved in junior representative teams stay up-to-date with the easing of restrictions regarding exercising (and training) outdoors as well as access to gym facilities.

David Nofoaluma encourages COVID vaccination for community – Return to Play update junior reps

Wests Tigers support the advice of health authorities which is that anyone who is eligible for vaccination should get vaccinated without delay. It is clearly outlined in the NSW Government’s Roadmap to Recovery that those who are not fully vaccinated will not be able to have the same immediate freedoms as those who are fully vaccinated.

Whilst we await further advice from Government and relevant sporting bodies, Wests Tigers encourage all players and staff to get vaccinated as a means of protecting ourselves, our teammates and our families while also preparing for a return to play as quickly as possible.

Preparing to Play

Return to Play update junior reps

The 2022 NSWRL junior representative season is scheduled to return on February 5 and Wests Tigers encourage those involved to do everything you can to prepare for that date.

This includes considering vaccination if you have not already, complying with health orders, ensuring that you check in at every venue you attend and ensuring that any venue you attend has a COVID safety plan (including gyms, training fields and other sporting facilities).
