Sky Blues to meet in NSW Women’s Premiership decider
Harvey Norman NSW Sky Blues and NSW Under 19s teammates will square off against each other at tomorrow when Wests Tigers and Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks meet in the Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership Grand Final at Campbelltown Stadium.
Sharks’ Sam Bremner, Tiana Penitani, Teagan Berry, Talei Holmes and Quincy Dodd were part of the Sky Blues 22-strong squad this year which beat Queensland 20-14 in Canberra, while teammates Holli Wheeler and Maddie Studdon have also had Origin experience.
Among the forward pack are hooker Rueben Cherrington and prop Tegan Dymock, who won the Under 19s Origin shield in 2021 – Cherrington backing that up with another Under 19s win over Queensland at Leichhardt Oval on 23 June this year.
The Tigers also boast plenty of experience, including Sky Blues captain Kezie Apps and centre Jess Sergis. NSW Under 19s five-eighth Losana Lutu will be calling the shots alongside Emily Curtain, who has graduated from the Harvey Norman Tarsha Gale Cup side.
“They’ve got a really good pathways going on there at the Tigers and obviously at the Sharks as well,” Studdon said.
“I’m really glad it’s these two teams in the final as that’s a really good lead-off into the NRLW as both those clubs just announced they’ll be there next year.”
The NRL has granted 2023 licences for the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks and the Wests Tigers to be part of an expanded 10-team competition.
As for the outcome of Saturday’s Harvey Norman Grand Final, the kicking games of halfback Studdon and her opposite No.7 in Emily Curtain will be crucial to the end result.
“I reckon it will be a nail biter of a game,” Studdon said.
“Obviously a Grand Final is completely different to any other game, but no matter what there’s too much talent across the paddock in both these sides for it not to be a tight game.”
Curtain believes you can toss a coin as to how the game will pan out – either a couple of points difference or an avalanche of tries.
“Honestly, it could go either way,” Curtain said.
“It could be a really close game or there could be lots of points on the board.”
Kick-off in the decider for the Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership is 2pm with tickets available at the gate.
