A crucial part of the Sharks development system, the Winter Academy is open to those registered and playing for Cronulla-Sutherland District Junior League clubs. Squads will be assembled in the under 13s, 14s, 15s and 18s age groups.

Those selected will participate in a training block and games. Trials will be conducted at the Academy Fields at Cronulla High School.

Good signs for junior Sharks in final trials

There was plenty to like as the young Sharks laid a strong foundation for the season ahead in their third and final trials on Saturday.

The men’s Harold Matthews (under 17s) and SG Ball (19s) teams hosted the formidable Bulldogs at Sharks Academy. Although they both lost by two tries, the coaches were heartened by the performances a fortnight out from round one.

Meanwhile, the women’s Lisa Fiaola (17s) side took part in a three-way trial against the Central Coast Roosters and North Sydney Bears at Hills Grammar, Kenthurst, running out two-tries-to-one victors in both 30-minute hit-outs.

And the Tarsha Gale Cup (19s) squad maintained their unbeaten pre-season form with an impressive eight-tries-to-four win over the Bears.

Harold Matthews coach Brad Kelly took positives from what his team served up.

“It’s getting better each week in terms of the quality of the play, but again discipline was a factor in it,” Kelly said after the six-tries-to-four loss.

“A lot of penalties and six-agains which cruelled us, particularly in the first stanza of the game. But that’s what trials are for – to have another look at the boys, work on different combinations and different positional options.

“I was pleased with the effort, particularly in defence. The Bulldogs are big and powerful, so they threw a bit at us and I thought the boys did a really good job of handling them for most parts of the game.”

Likewise, SG Ball coach Dave Howlett saw merit in his squad’s narrow defeat.

“I thought the standard from both teams was pretty good,” Howlett said.

“It was a bit sloppier than I would’ve liked, but as far as the boys’ effort and cohesion, there was definitely some progress from last week to this week.”

The Lisa Fiaola and Tarsha Gale Sharks begin their campaigns against Wests Tigers at PointsBet Stadium on February 3, preceding an SG Ball clash with Balmain. The Harold Matthews boys also kick things off against Balmain at Concord Oval.

“It’s an important two weeks until round one … These two weeks are really important for the footy side of things, but also culturally and working on combinations and cohesion on and off the field,” Howlett added.

“It’s a very important two weeks to get right.”

One to keep an eye on

In the lead up to the season we will be taking a look at some of the young players who have a bright future in the Red V.

Every Friday, we will work our way through a different player and what they can bring to the Dragons in 2024.

Hayden Buchanan

An Australian schoolboys representative, Buchanan has big wraps on him from many at the club. He is an incredibly strong ball carrier, powerful, elusive and one of the fittest in the Steelers junior ranks over the past few seasons.

Hayden won the Group 7 premiership with the Gerringong Lions in 2023, and was a huge part of their success. Has the ability to play at both centre and second row, his future is seen in the back row.

A few words from his Gerringong coach, Nathan Ford:

“Hayden is known not just for his exceptional playing skills but also for his unwavering commitment to upholding the values of respect, responsibility, and excellence.

As a player at Kiama High School, he has become a role model for his peers, setting a standard of sportsmanship and character that is truly exemplary.

On the field, Buchanan’s respect for the game is palpable.

His interactions with teammates, opponents, and officials showcase a deep-seated reverence for the sport.

He understands that responsibility extends beyond scoring tries; it encompasses leadership, teamwork, and a dedication to constantly improving one’s abilities.

What truly sets Hayden apart is his pursuit of excellence.

Whether during training sessions or in the heat of competition, he strives to be the best version of himself”

Probably won’t play first grade in 2023, however is expected to feature in the lower grades, in both Jersey Flegg and the NSW Cup, and will start the season for the Illawarra Steelers in the SG Ball competition.

Young Sharks to trial against Souths

The next generation of Sharks will ramp up preparations for their 2024 junior representative seasons on Saturday with an exciting schedule of trial action against Souths at Redfern Oval.

aramex – 2024 PRE-ORDER NOW

In the first summer hit-out for most of the youngsters, the Lisa Fiaola (under 17s) and Tarsha Gale (19s) girls will take to the field ahead of the boys in the Harold Matthews Development (16s), Harold Matthews (17s) and SG Ball (19s) teams.

The games will feature extended squads and give the coaches an opportunity to test new combinations while building cohesion before the Christmas break.

With the official junior rep seasons set to start in February – except Jersey Flegg, which largely mirrors the NRL season – the budding Sharks will be keen to show their wares in competition after impressing on the training paddock.

Saturday’s fixtures follow on from the Harold Matthews Development (16s) and SG Ball Development (18s) squads tackling their age equivalents in the Illawarra South Coast Dragons’ Andrew Johns and Laurie Daley Cup teams last weekend.

In encouraging efforts, the Harold Matthews Development ran out 20-4 winners while the SG Ball Development went down 12-8 at Croome Sporting Complex, Albion Park. The games were played in the evening due to the heat.

Experienced coaches Brad Kelly and Dave Howlett remain in charge of the Harold Matthews and SG Ball sides respectively, with Robbie Taylor (Lisa Fiaola) and Isaac Michael (Tarsha Gale) assuming the clipboard duties in the girls ranks.

Junior Sharks ready for 2022 after Knights trial hit out

Cronulla Sharks Harold Matthews Cup trials v Knights Sat 22 Jan 2022 @ St. Johns Oval, Charlestown NSW (Photo : Steve Montgomery)

The Cronulla Sharks Junior Representative teams travelled to St. John’s Oval at Charlestown on Saturday for their final hit-out before the 2022 season kicks off.

The Harold Matthews Cup team were the first to take the field against their Newcastle opponents.

Head coach, Brad Kelly, ensured fair rotation of his player’s, providing all 38 squad members with the opportunity to make one last impression prior to round one team selection.

Despite a hard-fought battle from a determined Shark’s squad, the Harold Matts team were defeated in the final minutes of the game, following two quick Newcastle tries that saw the home team takeout the match six tries to four.

Trial Results No concern

Sharks Development and Pathways Manager, Glenn Brailey, expressed no concern surrounding the result and was impressed with the efforts demonstrated by the U17’s squad.

“Harold Matts came out strong in the first period matching it with a bigger Knights team,” Brailey said.

“The entire squad competed really well going try for try over the entire three periods of play, which was very pleasing.”

Cronulla’s SG Ball squad were the next to take the field against a strong Knight’s roster.

The Shark’s started the game well, presenting good attacking shape, however, with several key players missing and a pre-season plagued with disruptions, Cronulla was dominated by their Newcastle opponents.

“With HSC exams, schoolies, socials and COVID it has been a tough pre-season for our boys and the lack of quality time together unfortunately showed,” Brailey said.

“The team will pull together in time for Round 1, especially with key players returning.”

The club’s U19’s Women’s Tarsha Gale Cup squad played a three-way trial against the Newcastle Knights and the South Sydney Rabbitohs, in the final matches of the day.

The girls showed promise for the upcoming season in their first match-up, defeating their South’s opponent’s four tries to two.

However, their second match of the day proved to be a more difficult contest, with the Newcastle Knights presenting a greater challenge to the young Shark’s side.

“Our girls did a great job against the mighty Rabbits but found things a little tougher against a strong Knight’s outfit,” Brailey said.

“Our players will all take something out of these trials and I’m sure the coaches will have their player’s ready for Round 1.”

The 2022 NSWRL Junior Representative season is scheduled to commence on Saturday 5th February, with all Shark’s teams set to kick off their respective campaigns at PointsBet Stadium.

Junior Sharks sponsors back on deck for 2022

After a couple of Covid distracted years, optimism and excitement again surrounds the NSWRL junior representative program for 2022, with all Sharks teams either having begun, or about to start preparations for their respective seasons.

The under-17 Matthews Cup and under-19 SG Ball squads have already hit the training paddock, while the under-21 Jersey Flegg Sharks kick off their preseason campaign later tonight (Monday).

And while coaches and support staff will be doing what they can to prepare the teams for battle come season kick off early next year, also backing the young Sharks players and teams will be a couple of loyal Club pathways sponsors in John Ryan Freight Management (JRFM) and Elite Legal, with both on board again for 2022.

For major pathways program partner JRFM, their association with the Sharks junior rep teams to extend into 2022 and 2023, with the branding of the national transport services company to feature on the front of the jerseys, while also appearing on all three panels of the playing shorts of the three Sharks squads.

Sharks CEO Dino Mezzatesta in announcing the continuation of the partnership, praised Sue Ryan and JRFM for their ongoing support.

“We are again very appreciative of the contribution John Ryan Freight makes to our pathways and grassroots programs.

At the Sharks we pride ourselves on being a development club and to providing opportunity for young local players to chase their dreams and the support we continue to get from Sue and her team allows us to do that,” Mezzatesta said.

“This type of sponsorship is critical and key to the success of the junior programs and our players are both proud and appreciative to represent JRFM.

It is equally important to us and the club to be doing what we can to promote JRFM and their business and to make everyone aware of their support of our junior rep programs.”

Ms Ryan, Managing Director at John Ryan Freight Management, was proud to again have her company’s brand prominent on the three junior Sharks teams and to see her company associated with the Club for a fourth consecutive season.

“I’m excited and also honoured that John Ryan Freight Management is again on the junior rep team jerseys, and now also the shorts, and that we can continue to support the club,” Ms Ryan said.

“A number of outstanding players have come through the Sharks pathways system in recent years and we hope as a result of our contribution that can continue to happen, and that they will win plenty of games as well along the way.”

Also back, literally, with the Sharks junior rep teams is Elite Legal, who return as back of jersey partners for 2022.

A locally based legal firm that represents an alternative to the larger legal organisations, Elite boast senior industry experience made available on a more personalised basis.

The 2022 season will the third for Elite Legal as a partner of the Sharks junior rep and academy teams.

The Matthews Cup and SG Ball teams, after mixed results in 2021, head into the new season with renewed optimism and coaching staff changes, with Brad Kelly taking the reins of the under-17 Sharks, Dave Howlett after two years as an NRL assistant becomes SG Ball head coach, with George Ndaira moving up to take charge of the Jersey Flegg team.

The Matthews Cup and SG Ball competitions will begin in early February, while the Jersey Flegg season will coincide with round one of the NRL.

Cronulla Sharks HMC Player of the Year Sam McCulloch

A resounding round one victory over the Raiders gave the Matthews Cup Sharks plenty of hope, however the remainder of the 2021 season was something of a disappointment as the under-17 Sharks failed to make the competition finals.

Along the way there was a lot to like, littered with some inconsistency, with the young Sharks probably left to regret letting a big lead slip in a 28-all draw with the Steelers, after earlier going down to the North Sydney Bears at home in a match they had well in their keeping.

That being said, the Matthews Cup Sharks unearthed a number of quality players throughout the season and with lessons learned from what was the first year in junior rep competition for many, will be better for the experience going forward.

Without the ability to conduct a presentation event due to the COVID situation and with the new season of junior rep rugby league just around the corner, the Matthews Cup Sharks can now announce the award winners from the 2021 junior rep season.

Sharks Matthews Cup Player of the Year – Sam McCulloch

Cronulla Sharks HMC Player of the Year Sam McCulloch

A rangy front rower with the ability to play big minutes, McCulloch was a standout for the Matthews Cup Sharks in 2021, taking on and more often than not coming out on top of his opposition front rowers.

Playing for St John Bosco-Como in the local junior league, while also a student at Endeavour Sports High where he held his own against bigger and older opponents in schoolboy rugby league, Sharks Head Coach Jim Pizanias explained that McCulloch was a vital member of the Matthews Cup team.

“Sam is a big, strong, middle forward who is aggressive, skilful and has a great offload,” Pizanias said. “He also has an excellent work ethic, was a pleasure to coach and is certainly a worthy winner of our Player of the Year award.”

Matthews Cup Coaches Award – Chevy Stewart

Matthews Cup Coaches Award – Chevy Stewart

A year young and eligible to go around again in the Matthews Cup competition in 2022, Chevy Stewart was something of a surprise packet for Pizanias and his coaching staff during the past season.

Beating out older boys to win a regular spot in the Sharks team for round one, Stewart cemented his place on the wing, before spending some time during the later rounds at fullback, where his speed, competitive spirit and footy smarts made him a dangerous proposition for opposition defences.

From the Kurnell club, the sky is the limit for Stewart, who thoroughly deserved the coaches award recognition for his 2021 Matthews Cup season.

“For a player that can play Harold Matts again in 2022, Chevy played above his weight, showed a great temperament and it was a pleasure to watch him grow as a person and as a player throughout the year,” Pizanias said.

“Chevy is never intimidated and plays the game at speed. If he continues to work hard and develop he appears destined for a big future in the game.”

In chilly conditions, made even more difficult by a slippery and dewy playing surface, the Harvey Norman Women’s Sharks have outclassed the Wentworthville Magpies in a match contested at the NSWRL Centre of Excellence on Monday night.

In a match where the Sharks were always in control, they had some good moments, as well as patches which somewhat disappointed coach Tony Herman, but in the final washup were far too good in registering a 36-4 victory.

It was a win which saw the Sharks stay in touch with the Roosters and Mounties as they maintained third place on the competition ladder.

The Sharks scored early, in just the second minute when Georgia Page went over, then after those opening points were backed up by a try to Kiana Takairangii, it was 10-0 and the Magpies were already on the back foot.

Page scored a second soon after and by half time the Sharks had scored five tries and led 26-4.

The scoring slowed up somewhat for the Sharks after the break, however the job was done as the Cronulla girls registered their eighth win from nine matches so far this season.

As Sharks HNWP squad member Mardi Longford observed the fast start was pleasing but there remains work to be done with the business end of the season approaching.

“The girls completed their first six sets, which was good to see, that was one of our main goals,” she said. “We deviated from the plan a little bit after that, but came back and got a few tries on them before half time.”

Going forward, with big matches on the horizon against the undefeated Roosters and second-placed Mounties, defence might just become the focus.

“Our line speed, when we’re defending our line, we’ve got to get up on the big bodies in the middle. We can’t afford to give them time to power up,” Longford added.

As for her pick for the best in the Sharks win over Wentworthville, Longford went for a player who has recently returned from injury and will add plenty to Cronulla’s charge into the finals.

“The standout for me was definitely Tayla Preston. She’s be moved around into a few different positions this season and I thought tonight she played outstanding,” Longford added.

The HNWP Sharks have a short turnaround to their next match, which is scheduled for a 1pm kick off on Saturday against St Marys. That match will be played at PointsBet Stadium.
