Sharks Flegg blow away the Knights

After a stuttering start to the year, the Jersey Flegg Sharks have delivered their best performance of the 2022 season so far with a 34-12 victory over the Knights.

The Sharks built a 16-6 half time lead despite running into a gale-force southerly wind.

Before going on with the job in the second period to record their second victory, to go with a drawn match last weekend, from the first four rounds of the season.

In difficult conditions, the Sharks started the match strongly and when back-rower Toby Boothroyd ran onto a well-timed short ball from fullback Kade Dykes, the Sharks had a 4-0 lead.

Kicking into the teeth of the wind Ryan Rivett was successful with his conversion attempt and the Sharks were up 6-0.

Dykes was in the game again shortly after, the fullback brushing past a couple of defenders to score his teams’ second

Then in a sparking first half would notch a double, Rivett kicking the second of his two attempts to put the Sharks up 16-0.

The Knights managed to cross before the break to make it 16-6 but the Sharks would have been satisfied with their work over the opening 35-minutes.

The Sharks kept the pressure on in the second period and would continue to dominate the contest.

Winger Tom Rodwell crossing and when Rivett added the extra two, now with the advantage of the breeze, at 22-6 it was going to be a long way back for the Newcastle side.

The next four-pointer came from some spectacular play, Dykes fielding a kick, putting winger Sam Stonestreet away on a long run down the eastern touchline.

Rivett backing up to finish off a 75-metre movement. With the successful kick at goal, the Sharks were well in control at 28-6.

Another try, this time to centre Noah Lester pushed the lead out further, before the Knights would score a consolation try to complete the scoring.

In challenging conditions the win was built on a strong performance from the forwards, props Jack Martin and Rhys Dakin amongst those to lead the way, with Dykes his classy touches from fullback.

The Flegg Sharks will again play the curtain raiser to the NRL match next weekend when they face the Wests Tigers at PointsBet Stadium
