Second half fightback comes up short for Flegg Sharks

A second half comeback from the Jersey Flegg Sharks has fallen just short, with the young Cronulla side beaten 14-12 in the under-21 Grand Final by the Bulldogs.

In a match of high intensity, the Sharks fell behind 14-0 in the first half, before two second half tries, the later coming with just five minutes remaining, gave them hope of a come-from-behind win, however despite having their chances deep in opposition territory were unable to get across the line to tip the result in their favour.

It was a disappointing end to an outstanding season, one in which the Sharks won 10 straight games to reach the competition decider.

The first period of the match was all Bulldogs, on the back of a strong kicking game from half back Cassius Tia and after Sharks fullback Siteni Taukamo spent time in the sin bin.

Canterbury team built a 10-point after the opening 17 minutes of the match.

A third Bulldogs try made it 14-0 and after defending grimly on the stroke of half time the Sharks would have been pleased to get the opportunity to regroup after being forced to defend their line for long periods.

The teams continued to press after the break, with both refusing to crack, until an individual effort from Taj Ford.

Sharks five eight slicing through on halfway before beating the full back to cross under the uprights.

The conversion made it 14-6 with the second Sharks try, scored by winger Kristian Dixon following a clever kick from Noah Penitani, the try converted by Pollard, and the Cronulla team had given themselves a chance at 14-12 with time running out.

Despite their best efforts, the Bulldogs scrambled desperately on their line, in keeping the Sharks at bay to claim the 2024 Jersey Flegg Premiership.

The Sharks were well served by Dixon and Penitani on their right side, Ford was dangerous with ball in hand and kicked strongly.

Hooker Chaz Jarvis was busy throughout, while the pack lead by skipper Sam McCullough, along with props Lachlan Crouch and Felix Faatili worked hard against the physical Bulldogs forwards.

True Blue helps guide the Bulldogs to victory

True Blue Josh Jackson celebrated his first year of coaching by leading the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs to a nail-biting 14-12 win over Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks in today’s Jersey Flegg Cup Grand Final at CommBank Stadium.

The former Bulldogs NRL captain confessed he was nervous before kick-off, and at halftime despite a 14-0 lead, and particularly in the final five minutes when the gap was reduced to just two points.

“I’m just incredibly proud of them.

At the back of the game we were under the pump and the resilience they showed on the try-line there to keep turning them away was outstanding,” Jackson told nswrl.com.au

“We had no real strategies or structure in place for that frantic final passage there.

It just came down to how much they cared about each other.”

One of Jackson’s hard workers, prop Jack Underhill, was named Player of the Match (pictured above, Photos: Bryden Sharp).

That is now back-to-back premierships for the Bulldogs after they beat the Sydney Roosters last year by the same margin (22-20).

The Sharks were trying to add to the Jersey Flegg title they secured in 2018.

The Shire-based side had arrived in the grand final the hard way having to win their last six games of the regular season to snatch fifth spot.

Then they won three sudden-death matches.

“It’s a bit hard today obviously. We didn’t come out the way we wanted to – gave them too much possession early.

It was a credit to the Bulldogs the way they stuck at it,” said Sharks coach Andrew Dallalana.

“But I’m proud of our guys for holding tight until the 70th minute and keeping them scoreless all half. It came down to a couple of moments at the end there.”

The Bulldogs kept the Sharks pinned in their territory for most of the first half and it showed on the scoreboard.

The Sharks weren’t blameless in helping the Bulldogs score early, when fullback Siteni Taukamo was sin-binned in the ninth minute for a hit on Bulldogs winger Jonathan Sua.

Two sets later and halfback Cassius Tia sent a cut-out pass that ended with centre William Afualo over in the northeast corner.

Tia was central again with a 40/20 in the 18th minute leading to a fine individual try, when he stepped off his right foot 10 metres out as the defence was sliding left. The conversion near the uprights had the Belmore club up 10-0.

Taukamo returned but Sua failed his head injury assessment (HIA) bringing his Grand Final to a premature end.

Nonetheless the Bulldogs scored a third time – this occasion down their left edge with winger Ratu Rinakama crossing for his 14th try of the season.

The second half started with Cronulla-Sutherland needing to be next to score, and they did through five-eighth Taj Ford. His 45-metre run, stepping No.1 Taye Cochrane in the process, gave Riley Pollard an easy conversion (14-6).

It was Ford again with yet another line-break in the 64th minute.

He passed to his prop Felix Faatili who chewed up some more metres.

It was Ford doubling around the back and kicking for his right-side winger Kristian Dixon, who received the perfect bounce. The gap had narrowed to just two points (14-12).

The Sharks were given three six-again sets on the Bulldogs’ line but the Canterbury-Bankstown boys stood tall.

Jackson had some further True Blue input with assistants Josh Reynolds and Mark O’Meley.

“We’re incredibely lucky to have a lot of old boys come down and give up their time to help out,” he said.

He wanted to mention the extended bench of Bulldogs players who didn’t get on the field today.

“Everyone has played a part in getting us to this point and helping us get this far.

The energy they (reserves) bring on the sideline and before the game is incredible.”

The last time a club has gone back-to-back in Jersey Flegg Cup was the Penrith Panthers in 2006-07.

Bulldogs Eye Consecutive Titles in Grand Final at CommBank Stadium

The Canterbury Bulldogs’ next crop of stars take centre stage on Sunday in the Jersey Flegg grand final against Cronulla at CommBank Stadium.

It’s already been a massive season for a resurgent Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs.

The end of a seven-year NRL finals drought brought the fans back, but it’s in the pathways where the Club continues to tick the right boxes.

This Sunday, Club legend Josh Jackson will aim to guide Canterbury’s Jersey Flegg outfit to consecutive titles when the Bulldogs meet Cronulla in the under-21s grand final.

While they knocked over the Sharks in both encounters this season, Jackson wasn’t about to get ahead of himself in his first season as head coach.

“Cronulla are a very impressive side, they’ve won nine straight and were outstanding last week against a strong Canberra outfit. We will definitely have our work cut out for us on the weekend,” said Jackson.

With a handful of players backing up from last season’s 22-20 grand final victory over the Roosters, the Bulldogs are well placed to repeat Penrith’s back-to-back success in 2006-07.

“Quite a few of the boys were part of last year’s squad, which certainly helped out this year at training and with setting standards.,” said Jackson.

“And I guess it’s good going into this weekend having those guys because they know what the week is all about.”

While underage success is nice to have on the resume, it’s the development of NRL talent that is Canterbury’s biggest win.

A key member from the 2023 Premiership winning team, backrower Harry Hayes is one of several from the Flegg program to debut in Cameron Ciraldo’s top grade outfit this season.

“Jonathan Sua is another, he started this year in Flegg and made his first grade debut on the wing a few weeks ago which was pretty special for the group to see,” Jackson explained.

Prop forward Lipoi Hopoi is another one from last year’s grand final winning team that made his first great debut this year, and five-eighth Joseph O’Neill had a full season of NSW Cup.

So the boys can certainly see the opportunities are there.

For Jackson, now on the other side of a well resourced juniors program, it’s the efforts of lesser known club diehards that have been just as impressive in Canterbury’s success across the board in both men’s and women’s competitions.

“The club have done a great job in the way that they’ve set up the pathways, but we’ve also got great people that work full time who give up their time as well,” he said.

“They don’t really have any skin in the game, so to speak, but they just want to help kids achieve their dreams.

“Since coming back, it’s been one of the most impressive aspects, just the amount of people who love the Club and volunteer their own time.”

Ahead of Sunday’s big clash, here’s several Bulldogs to keep an eye on:

Cassius Tia (HALFBACK)

As the saying goes, if you can’t beat them, join them.

A member of last season’s losing Roosters side, Cassius arrived at Belmore with a strong mindset and worked his backside off during the pre-season. Super fit, the halfback works well in tandem with fellow halves partner Joseph Teaupa.

No stranger to delivering in clutch moments, the No. 7 kicked the Bulldogs to the decider with an extra time field goal against Canberra.

Taye Cochrane (FULLBACK)

One of Canterbury’s shining lights, Taye is North Coast product who has been rewarded for his hard work.

Had limited chances in SG Ball (under-19s) last season and joined the Flegg squad this year after several impressive games in Ron Massey Cup. A natural competitor, the No. 1 always pushes up in support and is young enough to feature again in 2025.

Reuben Moyle (HOOKER)

One of several Bulldogs player shooting for consecutive titles, Reuben is a former half who continues to thrive in the No. 9 jersey.

A tough defender who can light up the ruck, the hooker has also held his own in seven NSW Cup appearances.

Fahmy Toilalo (LOCK)

A key piece in the puzzle to combating a big and mobile Sharks pack, Fahmy will draw on the experience he gained coming off the bench in the 2023 grand final.

Missed a chunk of games earlier in the season with a broken jaw, but has quickly found his feet. Has a great work ethic and big engine.

Ratu Rinakama (WING)

A serious strike weapon out wide, the flying winger played in last season’s premiership winning Harold Matthews Cup (under-17s) side, and earlier this year scored a try for Canterbury in the SG Ball decider.

The 2024 Jersey Flegg Cup Grand Final will kick off at 11am on Sunday, September 29 at Commbank Stadium.

Cronulla are one win away from the Jersey Flegg title after dismantling minor premiers Canberra 38-18 at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday to advance to the grand final.

The emphatic performance marked a stunning 10th consecutive victory for the resurgent Sharks, who just two months ago were almost dead and buried.

Having only secured a playoffs berth in the last round of the regular season, Cronulla now stand on the cusp of the club’s second Jersey Flegg premiership as they prepare to face the Bulldogs at CommBank Stadium next Sunday.

Five-eighth Taj Ford bagged a hat-trick, while the electric centre-wing pairing of Michael Gabrael and Te Wehi Waitere were also instrumental in the six-tries-to-three romp as they wreaked early havoc on the left edge.

The elusive outside backs combined to engineer the opening four-pointer for Ford, who finished off a long-range movement by backing up through the middle.

Riley Pollard’s simple conversion made it 6-0 after seven minutes.

Gabrael was soon at it again, putting back-rower Dylan Coutts into the clear. He linked with a galloping Waitere, but a shift on the next play came unstuck.

Cronulla surged further ahead in the 16th minute with a piece of brilliance from Kristian Dixon, who flew to reel in a bomb, absorbed the contact and charged over the stripe.

Another easy goal for Pollard gave the Sharks an imposing 12-0 lead.

Continuing a starring role

Continuing a starring role, Gabrael laid on Cronulla’s third try when he swerved into space after a bullet pass from Ford before hitting Waitere again.

The flanker had work to do but withstood the defence to slam the ball down.

Pollard slipped as he kicked the conversion but still drilled it over the black dot.

Canberra hit back in the shadows of half-time when forward Tahrell Feaveai barged across from close range. Mitchell Henderson’s goal cut the margin to 18-6.

The Sharks came out firing after the break, reaffirming their dominance with centre Talanoa Penitani proving too strong.

Pollard added the extras once more before booting a penalty goal to give the underdogs a 26-6 advantage.

Not done with yet, the Raiders rallied as Kane Rushton spectacularly dived to score from a well-placed cross-field kick. Henderson couldn’t convert.

Canberra kept pressing, but Cronulla landed the knockout blow in the 61st minute thanks to runaway prop Felix Faatili.

The crowd rose in awe as the giant gathered a kick and set off downfield, showing tremendous speed belying his frame.

While he didn’t have the legs to go all the way, Ford split the Raiders on the next play.

The playmaker quickly had his treble, scooping up a fortuitous ricochet from his own grubber to send the Cronulla party into overdrive.

Pollard maintained his perfect goal-kicking record to cap off a tremendous display.

A try to Canberra’s Siamani Leuluai on the bell didn’t dampen the delight of the young Sharks, who can become Cronulla’s second title-winning Flegg team after the victorious side of 2018 when they tackle the Bulldogs next weekend.

Weststigers Pathways Wrap Round 6

Wests Magpies were too strong for Balmain Tigers in the Harold Matthews and SG Ball Cup at Lidcombe Oval, while Wests Tigers Jersey Flegg Cup side kicked off its season with a big win over the Kaiviti Silktails.

Balmain were too strong for Wests in the opening match of the day with the Tigers defeating the Magpies Under 16s development side 24-8.

Wests Magpies remain at the top of the ladder in the Harold Matthews Cup with three rounds remaining after defeating the Tigers 38-nil.

The Magpies are also doing well in the SG Ball Cup where they sit fourth on the ladder following their 38-10 over the Tigers.

It was a special occasion for our boys playing at Lidcombe Oval, a place with so much history, and the boys also knew there were Cubs spots up for grabs.

It was really pleasing to see the team believe in and stick to the processes of what we have been working on.

We knew Tigers had nothing to lose so it was important for us to respect them and not have the mindset of trying to score off every set.

We enjoyed the win and the whole experience at Lidcombe and I was really pleased to see Teancam Epati score on debut.

We now turn our focus to the Bunnies.

It was a tough day at the office on Saturday against a formidable opponent in the Magpies, who showed why they are the team to beat in this year’s competition.

There were a lot of positives for us to take from the game, particularly with the development players coming in and getting a taste of junior rep footy.

James Baronovski was a standout for us with an inspiring 60 minute effort, tackling himself to a standstill and taking us forward all day. He picked up both the man of the match and players’ player awards.

We started off on the right foot by posting the first two tries but a few incomplete sets allowed Balmain into the game and it was 10-all ten minutes before the break.

Navren Willett scored a long-range try just before half time for us to regain the lead.

After a few choice words from the coach at halftime, the boys found another gear in the second period to score a convincing win.

Tigers Coach – Chris Yates

I’m very proud of the boys who fought back after a slow start to 10-all in very hot conditions.

An intercept right on half-time really hurt us and we then lost two players to HIA and played the last 20 minutes without a bench.

I thought Mark Tannous, Sam Schmitzer and Chad Daniels were very good, as was Henri Young on debut.

Bulldogs win Jersey Flegg Cup

Bulldogs break 20-year drought in Jersey Flegg

Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs have won their first Jersey Flegg Cup premiership since 2003 after defeating the Sydney Roosters 22-20 in today’s Grand Final at CommBank Stadium.

The Bulldogs reaffirmed their reputation as the most successful club in the Jersey Flegg Cup, having now won 10 premierships since the competition started in 1961.

Bulldogs captain Joseph O’Neill was named Player of the Match for his impressive kicking game that proved a challenge for the Roosters outside backs.

“We knew we had to go out there and better in the second half,” O’Neill told NSWRL TV.

“The last 10 minutes we didn’t give up, it was really good.

“It could have gone both ways but I’m glad we were the ones to come away with the win.”

Both teams started the game strong, testing one another with and without ball in hand.

The Roosters were the first to open the scoring after fullback Owen Flaherty fired a nice cut-out pass for his winger Xavier Chatfield-Mooka to dive over in the corner.

The Bulldogs hit back soon after with tries to winger Jordi Mazzone and back-rower Harry Hayes to take their team out to a 10-4 lead.

With the Bulldogs knocking the ball on off the kick-off, it placed the tricolours 20 meters out from their line with a full attacking set.

Off the back of some quick passing from the Roosters right edge, Chatfield-Mooka crossed over for his second try of the day.

The Roosters found themselves out in front in the 32nd minute through Tayson Fakosi who crashed passed defenders to score right next to the posts.

Tia successfully kicked the conversion to re-take the lead 14-10.

Starting the second half behind on the scoreboard, the Bulldogs spine combined to create an overlap for centre Danny Gabrael to score. Papalii added the extra two points to place the ‘Dogs back out in front 16-14.

After being held up in the in-goal area twice, Mazzone finally found the try line to cross over for his second try of the day.

The Roosters hit back in the 63rd minute through forward Salesi Foketi who powered his way to the line to now have this team trailing 22-20 with seven minutes remaining.

Late errors from the Roosters and strong defence from the Bulldogs in the final moments of the game, saw the blue and white seal the win – their first in two decades.

“It’s been 20 years since the last Flegg premiership, it means a lot to the club as well as the team,” Bulldogs coach Luke Vella told nswrl.com.au.

“We spent a lot of time at training on defence and effort areas, and they were sometimes where we needed our team to step up and they did.

“Hats off to the team, they bought into everything we spoke about, and they can now enjoy themselves.

“They are just a good group of boys, so I am just so happy to be their coach and I am very proud of their efforts today.”
