It’s one of rugby league’s showcase junior tournaments – and it kicks off with a bang from Port Macquarie on Saturday. Catch 13 games LIVE.

Watch live: ASSRL Nationals Day 1…

The action kicks off with two matches from the U15 boys tournament before the girls round robins.

Queensland Maroons have made a massive statement of intent, thrashing ACT 38-4 to open their ASSRL U15 boys national championship campaign in some style.

Three Maroons players scored doubles, including skipper Lincoln Dalton, while the ACT could only secure the one try.

Queensland came out all guns blazing, scoring three tries in the opening 10 minutes through Majah-Jose Peachy, Kingson Seve and Dalton.

ACT worked into the game towards halftime, maintaining more possession until it finally paid off.

A strong set down the width of the field found Tyler Stonham, who offloaded to Uhlia Tai for the try.

The Queenslanders hit back straight away courtesy of Ethan Grimshaw, who had just been brought into the match.

It took the Maroons 11 minutes to score their first try after the break when a brilliant play by captain Dalton put the game away.

Peachy added a second try, running the full length of the field following an intercept right on his own try line, while Grimshaw planted his own not long after.

A penalty goal for the Maroons to end the match sealed the victory.

PREVIEW

NSW Combined Catholic Colleges (CCC) coach Brad Melville believes the depth in his squad will be key as they prepare to open the inaugural ASSRL U16 Girls Nationals on Saturday.

The NSWCCC side will kick off the girls tournament against rivals NSW Combined High Schools, before also clashing with Western Australia and NSW Combined Independent Schools on a frantic opening day.

Every match of the ASSRL Nationals will be exclusively LIVE STREAMED on KommunityTV, with Saturday’s action kicking off with two matches from the U15 boys tournament before the girls round robins.

With the girls tournament played in a shortened 20-minute game format for the round games, it means sides will play three games a day, with a rest day in between matches, before finals kick off on Wednesday.

The finals will be played in a longer 50-minute format.

Melville said the increased number of games, and short turnaround between matches, would mean every player in the 20-women squad will be called upon.

FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR ASSRL NATIONALS LIVE STREAM

“I think that’s been the most difficult part of the preparation,” coach Melville said.

“Making sure we’ve got the depth in our squad to do both formats.

“We’ve had to obviously prepare for short games, where you’ve got to just be ready to go. Then once you hit the finals they’re full games, so we’ve had to pick a squad that can do both.”

Melville said a key focus for him was to build a team that can deliver no matter who is on the field.

Sienna Thomas will have a big role to play for NSWCCC.

Halves Sienna Thomas (St Brigid’s Catholic College) and Macey Cox (St Joseph’s, Aberdeen) will steer the side around the park, while Melville has backed his engine room to match it with most sides in the competition.

“We’ve got some really quality halves that can guide the team around, our front row and lock can just really get our team forward,” he said.

“We’ve also got some really powerful girls coming off the bench, so I think we’ve got all our bases covered.”

Who has signed Qld’s 45 top schoolboys

Which NRL clubs have signed Qld’s top rep schoolboys? With News Corp’s Langer Trophy, Walters Cup round 5 of live streaming on Wednesday, we reveal the clubs investing in Queensland’s best.

The ASSRL school boy 15 years. The Queensland White celebrate a try Queensland White Vs ACT. Thursday July 7, 2022. Picture, John Gass

The Brisbane Broncos, Gold Coast Titans and Sydney Roosters have the three Queensland schoolboys signed, but where are our other representative young guns going in the NRL.

Ahead of another round of Langer Trophy, Walters Cup, Dolphins and Payne Cups’ live streaming by News Corp this week, we reveal the NRL clubs who have many of Queensland’s 15 years and 18 years representatives team players signed.

ASSRL national championship player of the carnival Karl Oloapu (Wavell SHS) is with the Broncos, Queensland’s man of the championships, Keano Kini (PBC SHS) is with the Titans while Rob Toia (Nudgee) is with the Roosters.

Karl Oloapu (Wavell SHS)

Signed by the Brisbane Broncos

Oloapu was the player of the championship. A bashful champion, he played out of position at No. 13 but still showed his class.

Keano Kini (PBC SHS)

Gold Coast Titans

Kini was the Queensland player of the championship, a brilliant contributor from fullback with his running game and passing in the front line.

Mason Phillips (Wavell SHS)

Signed by the Canterbury Bulldogs

Phillips was the Queensland white player of the carnival after igniting his team from dummy half. He also had an astute short kicking game in attack.

Mereki Warradoo (Wavell SHS)

Signed by the Dolphins

The Dolphins showed good judgment signing Warradoo before the carnival, with the young fullback an eye-catching performer.

Gabriel Satrick (Ipswich SHS)

Unsigned but contract looming

Dummy half Satrick was named Man of the Match in Queensland’s 18 years grand final win. At the time of publication he was unsigned, but the NRL talent scouts are circling.

Langer Trophy Replays

Marsden V Redcliffe

Coombabah V Mabel

Arama Hau (Keebra Park SHS)

Signed by the Gold Coast Titans

Hau was arguably Queensland’s best 18 years player behind Oloupa and Kini. He was a dynamic edge forward who realised his potential. He is a huge prospect for the Gold Coast.

Michael Roberts (PBC SHS)

Signed by the Dolphins

Roberts had a quiet championship with the ball as play tended to go to the other side of the field, but he defended strongly and ran dummy half runs with gusto. He is a proven competitor.

Chris Faagutu (Marsden SHS)

Signed by the Wests Tigers

Faagutu, a mobile middle forward, was a forward interchange forward who maintained the rage when he came on after the initial exchanges.

Josiah Pahulu (Ipswich SHS)

Signed by the Titans

Pahulu was an outstanding mobile forward for Queensland, strong in defence and quick on his feet carting the ball forward. He also had a late offload in his game.

QLD’s Gabriel Satrick. Picture: Zak Simmonds

Liam Le Blanc (Nudgee College)

Signed by South Sydney

Le Blanc was an unsung hero, a get down and dirty front rower who set the highest of standards. Queensland were lucky to have him and Australian selection was richly deserved.

Tre Fotu (Ipswich SHS)

Unsigned but NRL remain interested

Left centre Fotu remained unsigned but rest assured there is now NRL interest for him. He was an unlucky omission from the Australian schoolboys side. He is unsigned, but there is interest from NRL clubs.

Ellyjah Birve Queensland White Vs ACT. Thursday July 7, 2022. Picture, John Gass

Ellyjah Birve (Caloundra SHS)

Signed by the Melbourne Storm

Five-eight Birve lived up to the hype with a five star performance and was easily Queensland’s best White 15 years player alongside Mason Phillips (mentioned above).

His running game, his chasing of kicks and courageous defence shone.

He also showed great temperament to kick a winning goal under pressure.

Nixon Pasese (Nudgee College)

Signed by the Dolphins

Pasese was a huge influence at prop for the Queensland 15 years Maroons with big, strong carries and mobility for a big man.

Lui Lee (Marsden SHS)

Signed by the Brisbane Broncos

Lee was probably the best centre at the carnival from any of the three Queensland teams. He was a big body with great feet and space who can pass.

Braithen Scott (St Mary’s College)

Signed by the Brisbane Broncos

Scott was absolutely outstanding at halfback.

He was never the best player on the field, but he was always one of the top 3-5 players.

He is an excellent prospect.

Josh Lynn. Picture: Zak Simmonds

Josh Lynn (PBC SHS)

Signed by the Gold Coast Titans

Lynn was the glue of the Queensland 18s, a Cooper Cronk type. He is following in the footsteps of past students Toby Sexton and Tom Weaver as Queensland 18 years halfback representatives.

Jye Gray (The Southport School)

Signed by South Sydney

Five-eight Gray captained Queensland’s 18s by example, bravely backing his running game.

Time and again he ran, and time and again the defence nailed him.

But when it mattered most to grand final day, Gray ran and this time slipped past the defence to score.

Benson Tau (Marsden SHS)

Signed by the Dolphins

Benefiting from Lee’s form, Tau made the most impact of any Queensland winger at the championships. Tall and athletic, he has all the attributes.

Redcliffe SHS’s Nate Berrigan Queensland White Vs ACT. Thursday July 7, 2022. Picture, John Gass

Nate Berrigan (Redcliffe SHS)

Signed by the Dolphins

A rugged competitor who got down and dirty at the championships. Did the hard yards with enthusiasm and must have inspired his teammates.

Fa’apale Feaunati (Gregory Terrace)

Signed by the Broncos

The tall, athletic prop was outstanding for the Queensland 15s, with a long stride and nice hands. He is a good investment by the Broncos.

Mace Andrews (Marsden SHS)

Signed by South Sydney

A wonderful raw talent, and it is little wonder the Rabbitohs are investing time in this big, mobile prop.

QLD’s Jye Gray. Picture: Zak Simmonds

Coby Black (Marsden SHS)

Signed by the Broncos

Importantly Black, aged just 16, rose to the occasion on the big stage when he came on for the Queensland 18s as an extra ball-playing attack player.

Most people can now see what the fuss is about.

Nelson Makaafi (PBC SHS)

Signed by the Gold Coast Titans

The edge forward was a powerhouse for the Queensland Maroons who is a prospect for the future.

Charlie Dickson (Wavell SHS)

Signed by the Dolphins

Dickson was a working man’s dream, toiling in the middle both with and without the football. He is an excellent prospect for the Dolphins.

Brian Pouniu (St Eugene College)

Signed by the Dolphins

The Redcliffe Dolphins junior is an outstanding edge forward prospect, one of the most promising in his age group

TZac Bateman Queensland White Vs ACT. Thursday July 7, 2022. Picture, John Gass

Zac Bateman (The Cathedral College)

Signed by the Cowboys

No. 13 Bateman backed up his excellent Queensland championship forward with another blue collar effort for Queensland White at the championships.

Marley McLaren (PBC SHS)

Signed by the Brisbane Broncos

A running half, McLaren is an obvious talent who will benefit greatly from playing in the big league against the best of the best.

QLD’s Elekana Suavai makes a break. Picture: Zak Simmonds

Elekana Suavai (Kirwan SHS)

Signed by the Cowboys

Suavai seemed to grow as the tournament progressed. A big body, his agility and power game added to Queensland’s attack, but also to its hitting power against some young giants from south of the border.

Jeremy Trappett (Iona College)

Signed by Newcastle Knights

Trappett is a specialist fullback trapped behind Keano Kini, but he never let Queensland down playing as an interchange centre.

Wynnum Manly supporters and the Iona College community rate him very highly, as did the state selectors.

Marley Mclaren scores a try. Picture: Tertius Pickard

Cohen Jackson (Mercy College)

Signed by the Brisbane Broncos

Jackson had the honour of signing a Broncos deal in the days leading up to the championship.

A busy middle forward with a great attitude who will grow into his body.

Jared Horne (Wavell SHS)

Signed by the Broncos

Edge forward Horne showed why the Broncos think highly of him.

Jairus Halahala (Redcliffe SHS)

Signed by the Dolphins

Halahala showed in patches why the Dolphins are investing in him. He is a great build, another big, mobile middle with impact.

The ASSRL school boy 15 years. Queensland White player Duquan Talaepa Queensland White Vs ACT. Thursday July 7, 2022. Picture, John Gass

Duquan Talaepa (Mabel Park SHS)

Signed by the Canterbury Bulldogs

The right edge and mobile middle saved his best to last at the championship and is an obvious prospect.

Carter Welfare (Nudgee College)

Signed by the Dolphins

From the Rockhampton rich rugby league region, the youngster is yet another exciting play making junior who has been identified by the Dolphins

Haizyn Mellars (Marsden SHS)

Signed by South Sydney

Like his wing partner Tait, we did not see Mellars stride out but rest assured he is a great talent with elite athletic, jump and catch skills.

He scored a 95m try in his last Langer Trophy match and has pace to burn.

Tyreece Tait (Wavell SHS)

Signed by the Broncos

We didn’t see the best of long striding, explosive Tait weho is a natural in a foot race to the corner.

Certainly the wet weather did not help in the national championaship pool games – but he is a rip-roaring wing talent worth investing in.

Queensland celebrate after winning the under 18 ASSRL schoolboys. Picture: Zak Simmonds

Demascus Neemia (Wavell SHS)

Signed by the Canterbury Bulldogs

Neemia was a tough as teak middle forward who got the job done against the big-boppers from down south.

Braithen Scott attacks. Picture: Tertius Pickard

Te Iri Rudolph-Mokaraka (The Southport School)

Signed by the Broncos

The big fella is a dynamic forward and there is no doubt why Brisbane believe he is worth a punt.

Seth Nikotemo (Keebra Park SHS)

Signed by the Gold Coast Titans

Nikotemo was an unsung edge forward hero in the championship winning Queensland 18s.

Cooper Cracknell (Ipswich SHS)

Signed by South Sydney

A big, mobile middle forward with a high work ethic is from the rugby league heartland of Ipswich.

Joseph Tupuse (Keebra Park SHS)

Signed by the Broncos

Tupuse was a centre wrecking ball who showed great promise.

Jared Horne attacks. Picture: Tertius Pickard

Immanuel KaleKale (Keebra Park)

Signed by the Gold Coast Titans

One of the form Langer Trophy props, Kalekale gave Queensland grunt as an interchange forward when opponents were looking to take Queenland’s 18s on down the middle.

Best unsigned talents

Aside from Satrick and Fotu from the 18s, at the time of publication Azariah Toki-Mautairi (Wavell SHS). Tory Bath (Nudgee College) and Jake Carsburg (Grace Lutheran College) were unsigned, although there was known to be interest in Carsburg.

Toki-Mautairi is a halves or fullback young gun while centre Carsburg got better as the championship went on.

Bath had a fabulous championship being used as an extra attacking weapon.

Bath, a Norths junior and Nudgee First XV player, has great hands, quick feet and acceleration.

Keoki Koraba (Wavell SHS) was also a blockbusting centre with obvious ability.

The status of impressive Queensland 15 years White interchange forward Elsiyah Laumatia (Bowen SHS) is unknown, but he has plenty of raw talent.

There are many other outstanding Queensland schoolboys like the following who have NRL contracts but who did not make Queensland teams.

Among them are country boys like

Kaiden Lahrs (Kirwan SHS, Broncos), Dallas Ingram (TSS, Titans), Jamal Shibasaki (Ignatius Park College, Broncos), Mutua Brown (Cowboys), Kurt Fisher (Cowboys), Matthew Hill (St Brendan’s College, Storm), Teke Mene (Ignatius Park College, Cowboys), Tekelu Meme (Ignatius Park College, Cowboys), Henry Teatau (Ignatius Park College, Townsville), Tevita Penaia (St Brendan’s College, Yeppoon), Jaxon Purdue (Cowboys, St Pat’s), Xavier Kerrisk (St Patrick’s College, Cowboys) and Lykhan King-Togia, (Broncos), to name a few.

The likes of Logan trio Alex Leapai (Mabel Park, Roosters), Israel Leota (IGS, Broncos) and Beni Allan (JPC, Broncos), and Coombabah SHS’s Lewis Symonds (Broncos) along with a host of Ipswich SHS players headed by Rene Bagon (Manly) are also just some of the elite schoolboys signed with NRL clubs.

Queensland’s best 15-18 years combined schoolboy side; our award winners revealed

Here’s 40 schoolboy league players from the Qld 15 years and 18 years teams we honour in our 17 awards following the ARSSL championships.

Action from the Australian state schools national rugby league championship match between Queensland Maroon and NSW CHS. Picture: Tertius Pickard

Queensland rugby league is still basking in the glory of the state’s 18 years schoolboy side claiming the ARSSL national championship on Friday at Redcliffe.

Wavell SHS’s five-eight Karl Oloapu was named man of the championship and PBC SHS fullback Keano Kini Queensland’s best player across its matches.

And while the two Queensland under 15s missed playing in the grand final, the future of Queensland schoolboy football is in good hands.

PHOTO GALLERY FROM GRAND FINAL DAY

QLD’s Keano Kini. Picture: Zak Simmonds

OUR AWARD WINNERS FOLLOWING THE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Best try

It has to be Keano Kini’s (PBC SHS, Qld 18 years) day 5 effort when he burst into action to support a break by Karl Oloapu against NSW CIS.

I spent the early part of the tournament singing the praise of Kini and Oloapu and in one foul swoop, the boys didn’t let me down.

QSS’s Karl Oloapu makes a break during the under 18 ASSRL schoolboy rugby league championship grand final between QLD v NSW CHS from Moreton Daily Stadium, Redcliffe. Picture: Zak Simmonds

Pass of the tournament

Karl Oloapu’s remarkable pass to create a try against NSW CIS when he carried the ball to the line, copped a hit, but still put the ball in the bread basket of an opponent.

That pass, and Kini’s long left ball in Friday’s final to open up space and create a try was also a beauty. But Oloapu’s effort was the best.

Best impersonation of an immortal

Karl Oloapu (Wavell SHS, Qld 18 years) again. His try in the grand final against NSW CHS was Wally Lewis like, the manner in which he came so hard onto the ball, fighting to the death to the tryline.

That was Lewis, filty determind to score in a big match, and Oloapu mirrored the great man.

Action from the Australian state schools national rugby league championship match between Queensland Maroon and NSW CHS. Lui Lee. Picture Tertius Pickard

Best centre award

Pre-tournament we all knew Michael Roberts (PBC SHS) was the best centre in Queensland – and despite limited chances at the nationals, he still is, hence his Australian schoolboy selection.

But with more opportunity, Lui Lee (Marsden SHS, Qld 15 years) Lee was the class centre of his age group, with telling footwork, size and speed. He could also pull off a shot in defence.

The ASSRL school boy 15 years. Queensland White player Ellyjah Birve. Picture, John Gass

Best 15 years age group players

Mereki Warradoo (Wavell SHS, Qld maroons 15 years)

Warradoo was officially the 15 years age group’s best Queensland player, starring from fullback.

But I also loved dummy half Mason Phillips (Wavell SHS, Qld white 15 years). Phillips had a real spring in his step, scorching out of the ruck when the opportunity presented while also feeding his half Dallas Ingram with precision.

And then there was Ellyjah Birve (Caloundra SHS, Qld 15 years)

There was a splash of Chris Sandow (ex-NRL player) in young Birve who snared one man of the match award in one game despite being off colour, and kicked a pressure goal in another to boot his side to victory.

Action from the Australian state schools national rugby league championship match between Queensland Maroon and NSW CHS. QLD celebrates after Marley Mclaren scored a try. Picture Tertius Pickard

The best flying under the radar players

Josh Lynn (PBC SHS, Qld 18 years)

With talent bursting all around him, Lynn was a Cooper Cronk type who was the perfect choice to complement Jye Gray, Oloapu, Kini and Coby Black.

Chris Faagutu (Marsden SHS, Qld 18 years)

What a pleasure it must have been for coach Geoff Eggert to peer across his interchange bench knowing he had versatile mobile middle man Faagutu up his sleeve.

Action from the Australian state schools national rugby league championship match between Queensland Maroon and NSW CHS. Braithen Scott attacks. Picture Tertius Pickard

Braithen Scott (St Mary’s, Qld Maroons 15 years)

While Scott was not the best player in his team, he was consistently in the top three.

A good listener, he mirrored Lynn’s efforts for the under 18s in that he was a quiet achiever.

The young bloke has a future.

Seth Nikitemo (Keebra Park SHS, Qld 18 years)

The edge forward did plenty of grunt work against bigger, grizzly NSW rivals. His defensive efforts did not go unnoticed.

Liam La Blanc (Nudgee College, Qld 18 years)

The stoic Norths Devils junior had a wonderful tournament plugging the middle for Queensland and gaining parity with his runs forward.

Most explosive award winners

Keano Kini (PBC SHS)

QLD’s Jye Gray. Picture Zak Simmonds

When Kini started to make his move down the middle of the ruck, alarm bells would have been sounding left, right and centre.

The word dynamic was evented to describe Kini, I reckon.

Arama Hau (Keebra Park SHS, Qld 18 years)

Hau was one of the players of the tournament.

No one would have been shocked at Hau’s form, such is his raw ability.

But to impact the way he did as a full-time edge player – he is traditionally a No. 13 – enhances his reputation no end.

Jye Gray (TSS, Qld 18 years)

Gray’s reputation for blinding acceleration was on the tip sheet of every opposition side, and his presence would have taken pressure off the incursions for Oloapu and Kini.

True to form he found the tryline in Friday’s final with a brilliant individual burst.

Best mobile big men

Hau again. This bloke is a beast and Keebra Park SHS are blessed to have him for the second half of their Langer Trophy campaign.

Josiah Pahulu (Ipswich SHS, Qld 18 years)

The mobile Pahulu used his agility and speed to hustle go forward around the ruck, while using his body height to attack the ball when the young giants from the NSW school teams marched forward.

QLD’s Arama Hau celebrates his try with team mates during the under 18 ASSRL schoolboy rugby league championship grand final between QLD v NSW CHS from Moreton Daily Stadium, Redcliffe. Picture Zak Simmonds

Mace Andrew (Marsden SHS, Qld Maroons 15 years),

Big and mobile, Andrew is an excellent prospect. Andrew and his front row partner Nixon Pasese were imposing go forward props for the Queensland Maroons.

A Marsden Hancock Cup (Year 9) player, Andrew’s footwork, leg speed and occasional ball playing impressed.

Nixon Pasese (Nudgee College)

The prop was a midfield powerhouse, the best across the two Queensland 15 years teams. He had a great one-two, go forward combination with Mace Andrew for the young Maroons.

QLD’s Jye Gray scores a try. Picture Zak Simmonds

Best players kept on ice award winners.

Michael Roberts, Tyreece Tait and Haizyn Mellars.

Roberts saw less ball on his side of the field than fellow centre Tre Fotu, but defensively he was spot on and was always on hand for the tough carry coming out of his end.

It was not a big opportunity week for the Queensland 18 years wingers. Tait saw more action, but both boys had limited chances. But both are class players who will no doubt impact the Langer Trophy when it resumes on Tuesday.

The best Cats Out of the Bag award winners

Tre Fotu (Ipswich SHS, Qld 18 years)

The emergence of Tre Fotu continued at break neck speed and he must have been strongly considered for the Australian side.

His powerful runs and rugged defence continued his season to the remember after helping Souths Logan win the Meninga Cup.

Gabriel Satrick (Ipswich SHS, Qld 18 years)

The cat is out off the bag and now the rugby league world knows everything about the dynamic dummy half who hails from Yarrabah in FNQ. Satrick was honoured with the Player of the Match in Friday’s grand final.

Discovery player award:

Who from the general public or NRL talent scout departments knew about Jake Carsburg (Grace Lutheran, Qld White 15 years) before the tournament

Like Braithen Scott from the Queensland Maroons 15 years), right centre Carsburg was not his team’s best player, but was a very good player who got better and better.

There is something to work on there, that is for sure.

Ellyjah Birve (Caloundra SHS, Qld 15 years) was mentioned earlier, but we feel he deserves a second plug.

QLD’s Coby Black . Picture Zak Simmonds

Rookies on the Rise award

Coby Black (Marsden SHS, Qld 18 years)

The baby of the Queensland 18s, Black gave Queensland another dimension as coach Geoffrey Eggert excellently found a way to best use his squad. He was prepared to back his skill with some bold passes that kept Queensland on the attack.

QLD’s Elekana Suavai. Picture Zak Simmonds

Raw talent award

Benson Tau (Marsden SHS, Qld Maroons 15 years)

Tau had the most impact of any of the Queensland wingers playing outside Lui Lee and the tall, athlete Logan winger sure lived up to his hype.

Elekama Suavai (Kirwan SHS, Qld 18 years)

A powerhouse edge player with untapped potential. He would have gained so much from the camp and should be a better player as a result when the Payne Cup resumes.

Zac Bateman from The Cathedral College in Rockhampton.

Duquan Talaepa (Mabel Park SHS, Qld 15 years)

The Canterbury Bulldogs signed Talaepa got better as the tournament unfolded, with his edge running proving a handful for opponents.

Joseph Tupuse (Keebra Park SHS)

Tupuse was not far behind Lee for impact and the Keebra Park rookie enhanced his reputation playing for the Queensland Maroons side.

Qld’s Nixon Pasese attacks. Picture Tertius Pickard

Hard yakka award winners

Zac Bateman (The Cathedral College, Qld white 15 years

Bateman was a middle field work-a-holic for Queensland while Nikotemo edge defence for the title winning 18 years state side did not go unnoticed.

Charlie Dickson (Wavell SHS, Qld 15 years)

Dickson was a true unsung hero and would have impressed the Dolphins officials who have signed the hard working, no nonsense No. 13.

QLD’s Gabriel Satrick makes a break, Redcliffe. Picture Zak Simmon

Nate Berrigan (Redcliffe SHS, Qld 15 years)

Berrigan was a true unsung hero in the middle for the Queensland white side, with his mobility leading a fast moving defensive line was challenging any defender in front of him when he carried the ball.

Damascus Neemia (Qld 18 years)

The breed them big in NSW and both Neemia and Immanuel KaleKale held up their end of the bargain every time they was handed the interchange card. Neemia did nothing flash, nothing special – just a big bloke doing his bit for the side.

Cohen Jackson hails from Mercy College, Mackay

Cohen Jackson (Mercy College, Mackay)

We loved the enthusiasm of the Mackay Souths Sharks junior playing middle off the bench in the Queensland white 15s. The Broncos like him as well – they signed him at the tournament.

Seth Nikotemo (Keebra Park SHS, Qld 18s) was mentioned earlier, but deserves another plug.

Queensland celebrate after winning the under 18 ASSRL schoolboy rugby league championship grand final between QLD v NSW CHS from Moreton Daily Stadium, Redcliffe. Picture Zak Simmonds

Wildcard watch award winners

Fa’apale Feaunati (Terrace, Qld white 15 years)

Lets monitor the progress of this tall, athlete, hard working middle forward who has desire and excellent skills.

Nelson Makaafi (PBC SHS, Queensland Maroons)

A raw talented Titans signing is going places.

He was strong and steady for the Qld Maroons. He will return to his school’s Hancock Cup (Year 9) campaign a better player.

Keoki Koraba (Wavell SHS, Queensland White 15 years)

Koraba and his fellow centre Jake Carsburg made impacts via contrasting styles, with Koraba’s physical presence catching the eye.

Marley McLaren (PBC SHS, Queensland Maroon 15 years)

McLaren was a perfect foil to halves partner Braithen Scott and will be a Player to Watch in the months ahead having had that invaluable experience.

The “Don’t forget about …’’ Award Winners

Jeremy Trappett (Iona College, Qld 18 years) and Tory Bath (Nudgee College, Qld 18 years)

With all the justified hype around Keano Kini, it is easy to forget Queensland had another two outstanding No. 1s good enough to make the state’s top 20 squad.

Wynnum-Manly junior Trappett was used a centre replacement while Norths Devils’ junior Bath added a dimension to the Queensland attack with his pace and passing game.

Meet the Australian Under 15’s team

Meet the next generation of NRL superstars. After a stunning week of carnival rugby league, we unveil our best Under 15’s Australian Schoolboys side.

Replay: ASSRL National Championships – QSS v NSWCHS

Following a stunning week of schoolboy rugby league in Redcliffe, News Corp Australia has run the rule of the long line of talent that competed in the carnival to select an Australian Under 15s team.

Led by goalkicking sensation Callum Grantham, who was awarded man of the match in the Under 15s grand final after booting NSW CIS to a shock victory over NSW CHS.

The side includes Lui Lee – the flying brother of Brenko – and Ashton Large – the 13 year old hooker who outplayed his older rivals to put himself on the radar of every NRL club.

Player of the match in the grand final NSW CIS’s Callum Grantham could have a big future in Rugby League. Picture: Zak Simmonds

Fullback: Callum Grantham (NSW CIS)

Player of the match from the grand final, Grantham was also a goal kicking match winner in the “semi final’’ win over Queensland Maroons.

But around those heroics he was also a danger man sniffing around the ruck and good under the high ball in the wet earlier in the championship.

Wing: Reilly Caswell (NSW CIS)

The Manly Harold Matthews prospect was one of the top 10 players of the tournament with his blazing pace often on show, including in the come from behind win over Qld Maroons.

It was Caswell who ushered the ball over the dead ball line after the siren in the final.

Centre: Lui Lee (Qld Maroons)

Lee was arguably the class centre of his age group, with telling footwork, size and speed. The brother of NRL player Brenko,

Lee could also pull off a shot in defence at left centre, but it was his ball work and running which was most impressive over the last week.

The younger brother of NRL star Brenko Lee, Lui was arguably the best centre in his age group. Picture: Tertius Pickard

Centre: Heamasi Makasini (NSW CIS)

From Newington College, Makasini crossed for the grand final try five minutes from full-time which dragged his side back into the match.

A left edge powerhouse, his combination with wing star Reilly Caswell was eye-catching.

Wing: Mereki Warradoo (Qld Maroons)

The Dolphins have signed Warradoo and it is little wonder.

The Wavell SHS fullback was arguably Queensland’s best in his age group and simply demanded selection in the First XIII.

Five-eighth: Onitoni Large (NSW CIS)

The Wests Tigers-signed playmaker was one of the stylish movers of the championship, with his long stride and vision causing no end of trouble to edge defenders.

Halfback: Alex Joseph Isdale (NSW Combined High Schools)

The playmaker from Westfields Sports High School, Isdale was easily in the best three players of his age group and polished his championship with a gala grand final performance.

NSW CHS’s Alex Joseph Isdale was easily in the top three best players in his age group. Picture: Zak Simmonds

Lock: Charlie Dickson (Qld Maroons)

Another Dolphins pathway player from Wavell SHS, Dickson is a real Wayne Bennett type middle forward with no frills who just churns through the work. He and Zac Bateman (Qld white) play the same position and did similar roles for their sides.

Second row: Heinz Lemoto (NSW Combined Catholic Colleges)

Lemoto was an edge colossus for his side with thumping running and jamming defence.

Second row: Tanner Mahon (NSW CIS)

Mahon played his way into our side with a huge grand final performance.

The Central Coast Sports College edge forward was almost impossible to handle for first contact defenders.

Prop: Lochlin Moses (NSW Combined High Schools)

The big, mobile middle forward prime mover from Endeavour Sports High School got his team going forward and delivered quick play the balls for his dummy half and halves.

At just 13-years of age, NSW CIS’s Ashton Large was standing up young men two years older than him. Picture: Zak Simmonds

Hooker: Ashton Large (NSW CIS)

Aged 13, Large was the baby of the championship who lit up the pool games with lightning dummy half skirts, handing his side match winning momentum.

Prop: Nixon Pasese (Qld Maroons)

The Dolphins-signed prop was a midfield powerhouse, joining with teammate Mace Andrews in an imposing one-two, go forward combination for the Maroons.

RESERVES

Ellyjah Birve (Qld White)

There was a splash of Chris Sandow (ex-NRL player) in young Birve who snared one man of the match award in one game despite being off colour, and kicked a pressure goal in another game to boot his side to victory.

Jhett Sydir (NSW CCC)

The Penola Catholic College halfback guided his team expertly around the paddock, bringing his forwards onto the ball and swinging the ball to the edges when the attack ball was on.

Lorima Rokosuka (NSW CHS)

A thrilling prospect from Westfields Sports High School, Rokosuka was a left wing powerhouse who went within a whisker of making the First XIII. He scored a try in the grand final.

Kaden Garner (NSW CHS)

The imposing edge forward from Endeavour Sports High School was a defensive powerhouse for CHS.

Zildjian Tafili (Canberra High School)

The Canberra Raiders were keeping an eye on Tafili’s progress and with good reason with the big fellas effortlessly handling the step up in class in often heavy conditions.

Nate Berrigan (Qld white)

Berrigan never had an off button, giving his team energy with and without the ball. The Redcliffe SHS student was tireless from start to finish.

Roman Tuaimau (NSW CCC)

From Patrician Brothers College, Tuaimau was a handful in the wet and the dry for CCC.

Tamoko Berryman-Duff (NSW CHS)

A Narrabeen Sports High School prospect, the CHS No.6 had a memorable tournament.

ASSRL Schoolboys Nationals finals day

It’s state against state, but more importantly two new NRL clubmates, who will go head to head in the biggest clash of the schoolboys calendar. WATCH all of the ASSRL finals LIVE from 9.30am, Friday.

Watch live: ASSRL National Championships

Don’t miss out on the headlines from Rugby League Live Stream. Followed categories will be added to My News.

Two South Sydney development contract rookies will lead their respective state sides into today’s ARSSL national schoolboy grand final.

Queensland captain and halfback Jye Gray and NSW Combined High Schools’ skipper Tyrone Munro met each other for the first time the other day as junior Rabbitohs, but will be arch rivals on grand final day.

While the State of Origin decider may not take the field in Brisbane for another week, KommunityTV will bring you its version of the great rivalry in the Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League grand finals.

A smiling Munro said there would be “a bit of rivalry’’ given the history between the two states.

Queensland teams are 0-4 against NSW sides in recent weeks, but can the 18 years Maroons snap the losing streak against NSW teams in the decider?

The Maroons’ under 19s State of Origin teams (both men and women), the senior women and the senior men have all lost to Blues’ team recently, so the 18 years Queenslanders have a chance to restore state pride at Moreton Daily Stadium in a clash to be live streamed by KommunityTV at 2pm.

10.40am: 15 Years Pool B Championship Final – WA v VIC

“Obviously it would be good to get one back on them after a couple of losses and hopefully we can get the job done and restore a bit of pride in the jersey,’’ said Queensland captain and halfback Jye Gray.

Queensland last won the competition in 2019 when future NRL stars like Reece Walsh, Sam Walker and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow strutted their stuff, and this time around Queensland have two players of similar impact – fullback Keano Kini (PBC SHS) and No.13 Karl Oloapu (Wavell SHS).

Gray said although players were from a variety of regions, the Queensland boys had gelled. “Everyone gets along which is why, up until today, we have been doing well.’’

Munro, a winger, said the pre-championship camp had worked wonders for his group and the team’s close bond had played a part in success so far.

“At our camp we all got to know the boys and our bonding has been a big thing. We have got to know each other’s strengths,’’ Munro said.

NSW CHS have a talent-laden line-up including Harrison Hassett, gun fullback Chevy Stewart, Roosters-signed half Cassius Tia and big Dylan Egan.

Although Kini and Oloapu threaten for Qld, the young Maroons are no two man band, with props Liam Le Blanc and Josiah Pahulu laying a foundation for Keebra Park SHS edge forwards Seth Nikotemo and the inform Arama Hau, while the tournament is yet to see wingers Tyreece Tait and Haizyn Mellars impact games due to earlier rain.

The under-15s decider, which will be broadcast live at 12.20pm, will feature a showdown of the Baby Blues as NSW CHS meet NSW CIS.

Future Sea Eagle and Combined Independent School flyer, Reilly Caswell, could be the man to break the Under-15s decider wide open with his raw pace.

The Knox Grammar student, who is also a national 400m track star, showed his express pace in a length of the field try to secure an extra-time win over Queensland and earn a spot in the decider.

The former Woolongong Collegians junior will not be alone in his efforts with NSW CIS also boasting the impressive Large brothers, Onitoni and Ashton, in their halves.

The Combined High School side’s quest for the Under-15 title will be spearheaded by Endeavour Sports High’s explosive backrower Kaden Garner, fullback Jayden Carter, Eels’ rookie Ali Karnib and fleet-footed touch football star Tomaka Berryman-Duff.

He is the heart of the Queensland engine room, and it is a heart condition that has kept Zac Batemen on target to realise his dream. Don’t miss a minute of the Day 4 action at the ASSRL Nationals LIVE.

Queensland schoolboys workhorse Zac Bateman says a heart condition has inspired him, rather than deterred him, from playing the club he loves.

Bateman, 15, from the famous Rockhampton rugby league breeding ground, will spearhead his team’s campaign again today when the Queensland White under 15s play ACT in Australian Secondary Schools national championship action live streamed by News Corp

The Cathedral College middle forward was Queensland’s best player in the Maroons’ White team’s 22-all draw against NSW Combined Independent Schools on Sunday.

DAY 4 LIVE SCHEDULE

Game 12: 9.20am – 15 Years Pool A Group 2 – QSS White v ACT

Game 13: 10.30am – 18 Years Selection Match 1 – ACT 26 – 6 CAS

Game 14: 11.50am – 15 Years Pool A Group 1 – NSWCCC 6 – 18 QSS Maroon

Game 15: 1.00pm – 18 Years Semi Final 1 – NSWCCC 8 – 30 NSWCHS n

Game 20: 2.20pm – 18 Years Semi Final 2 – QSS v NSWCIS

A No. 13 signed by the Cowboys, he was the glue of the side in a thrill-a-minute second half which saw Queensland come from a 22-10 deficit with two tries in the last three minutes.

Three years ago Bateman was diagnosed with a heart condition that initially sapped him of energy and threatened his rugby league career.

But with medication the Rockhampton Tigers junior has powered forward to earn his first Queensland cap after an outstanding season with Duane Carpenter’s Capras’ Connell Challenge side, and again at the state trials last month.

“It affected my football for a little bit but I have worked my way around it,’’ he said.

“I had to work harder to get around it. But it was a motivation to keep going and prove people wrong that you don’t stop for something like that.’’

Bateman said he was aware of Rockhampton’s proud tradition in producing outstanding rugby league players, and it was an “amazing’’ honour to now be a Queensland representative from the district.

Bateman, who injected great energy into the Maroons’ recovery, said the Queenslander chant which echoed from the Queensland dressing room before the match and again at halftime helped inspire the side.

A galaxy of young stars will again be on show today, with the likes of John Paul Donevski, Taj Brailey (both NSW Combined Catholic Colleges), Isaiya Katoa, Jesse McLean (both NSW Combined Independent Schools), Keano Kini and Karl Oloupa (Queensland) leading the charge in the two 18 years semi-finals.

REPLAY: Queensland White v ACT (15-Years)

Queensland (white) 15 years hooker Mason Phillips rose to the occasion to produce two early clutch plays in his team’s 34-4 victory over the ACT in game one today.

In a match which featured two eye-catching displays by ACT prop Zildjian Tafili and Queensland’s Nate Berrigan, Queensland dummy half Phillips sliced through twice to score within the space of four minutes, lifting his side to safety after a spirited opening 20 minute burst by the ACT.

He ran from near the quarter to score both tries, displaying speed to complement his eyes up footy sense.

Phillips (Wavell SHS) was the beneficiary of his side’s quick play the balls through the middle which gassed the ACT line.

And Queensland needed such precision and discipline to overcome the ACT which competed hard to restrict the second half to 10-4, restricting their rivals to just two tries while scoring themselves.

The first try came early – to Queensland (white) winger – Cooper McInnerney but after that shock start ACT challenged the home side with a revved up forward pack controlling the ball well.

ACT prop Tafili, who has been identified by the Canberra Raiders as a talent, led by example but the Queensland defence held, with left centre Jake Carsburg contributing to his team’s lassoing of the ACT when they shifted ball wide.

To score first, Queensland halfback Dallas Ingram (TSS) worked the blindside to create the opening four pointer for Nudgee College’s Cooper McInnerney when he put his centre Keoki Koraba into a gap.

Ellyjah Birve’s conversion made it 6-nil.

Queensland hooker Phillips (Wavell SHS) then won a penalty for his side off the back of ruck runs by Cooper Cracknell (Ipswich SHS) and Fa’apale Feaunati (Terrace), but a fumbled ball allowed ACT to scramble and regain possession.

However late in the first half Phillips broke free again, and this time did it all himself, running 20m through the ruck to score – and soon after scoring his second try.

PBC SHS’s edge forward Luke Jones also handed his fullback Tom Parker (Forest Lake SHS) a try after Jones had stormed onto a pass from halve Birve.

In the second half Queensland winger McInnerney again got on the score sheet.

ACT’s spirit was summed up eight minutes from fulltime when Tafili and Byron Cahill chased Queensland winger Isaac Cullen despite trailing 28-nil.

Appropriately ACT did get on the scoreboard late and the players should feel proud of their efforts.

REPLAY: ACT v Combined Affiliated States (18 Years)

Centre Regan Carr scored a second-half double and added an assist for good measure as the ACT under 18s cruised to a comprehensive 26-6 victory over Combined Affiliated States at the national all-schools championships.

Carr was too slick for the opposition as he added three goals on his way to a personal haul of 14 points at Moreton Daily Stadium.

The classy centre opened his account early in the second half. He wasn’t finished there, adding another before he turned creator to end any chance of a fightback from CAS.

His second came after a slick backline movement before he swopped on a dropped ball to send Max Mercer over with minutes remaining.

Carr was named man of the match for the ACT while lock Josiah Neli, who finished the game on report for a high shot in the first half, picked up the honours for CAS.

REPLAY: Queensland Maroons v NSW CCC (15 Years)

Dolphins NRL coach Wayne Bennett watched six of his junior pathway players help the Queensland Maroons storm to the top of their pool with a win over NSW Combined Catholic Colleges in 15 years action.

The Master Coach peered down upon Mereki Warradoo (fullback), Benson Tau (wing), Nixon Pasese (prop), Charlie Dickson (No.13), Brian Pouniu (edge forward) and Jairus Halahala (middle) who strutted their stuff in the Queenslander 18-6 victory.

Middlemen Pasese and Dickson, along with classy fullback Warradoo, would have most impressed Bennett.

But there were others to impress as well, including halfback Braithen Scott (St Mary’s) who straightened his team’s attack, edge Jared Horne, left centre strike weapon Lui Lee and prop Mace Andrew (both Marsden SHS).

The service of Queensland hooker Max Blanch was also excellent in the conditions, while for Combined Catholics his counterpart Diesel Hagan snared his team’s man of the match..

The big moment came midway through the second half when Queensland ramped up pressure on NSW.

Sensing a try, Queensland props Mace Andrew and Nixon Pasese almost shouldered each other out of the way, so eager were they to advance to the tryline.

In the end it was a wide shift – after the close quarter battle – which resulted in Queensland advancing to 14-6, 20 minutes from fulltime as replacement back Azariah Toki-Mautairi crossed out wide.

Earlier in the first half, both fullbacks ball-played to create tries for their side in the first half.

Queensland’s Mereki Warradoo put his right centre Joseph Tupuse on a 40m run to the line, with Tupuse finishing the movement with a blast of speed to get clear of his NSW rivals.

Not to be out done, Combined Catholic’s No.1 Logan Tolar also played as an extra half in the front line, with his low, spiral pass finding his centre Marcellus Iakapo.

The 6-all deadlock was broken by wonderful hole running from Queensland centre Lui Lee who with a jink and a swerve found a channel to the line off a delightful short pass from his halfback Braithen Scott.

NSW CHS have won the battle of the Blues to book a spot in the All Schools Championship Under 18s grand final.

In a clash against their famous rivals NSW CCC, CHS stormed home to beat the Catholics 30-8 after 70 minutes of bruising semi-final football.

Led by Junior Paulo look alike Sam Tuivaiti and future Canberra fullback Chevy Stewart, CHS scored four second half tries to give themselves a shot at schoolboy glory.

In a semi-final blockbuster that saw CHS renew their famous rivalry with CCC, it was the Catholics who drew first blood.

Fresh from posting 74 points against CAS in their All Schools Carnival opener, CCC crossed just three minutes into the match.

Exposing CHS on the edge, William Afualo crossed in the corner to get one over star CHS winger Tyrone Munro.

But CHS hitback in the 10th minute when Canberra bound fullback showed his strength by wrestling his way out of three tackles to level the match.

After CHS kicked a penalty goal to hit the lead, CCC went to the break up 8-6 following an on the stroke of halftime try to Ethan Roberts. There was no stopping CHS in the second half with Harrispn Hassett and Tallyn Da Silva scoring two of the four second half tries.
