Ghana Women’s Rugby League Set To Sail

After much effort and progress in the female development of rugby league in Ghana, the RLFG has officially launched five women’s teams.
A key focus area has been ensuring the game of rugby league is open to everyone, no matter the gender, race or religion. Rugby League Federation Ghana has worked hard to develop their program to enable women to participate in standalone teams who compete against each other.
Prior to this, women played in the men’s teams, causing a decline in female participation numbers. Due to the significant impact this was having, much attention has been paid to the development of Women’s Rugby League.
Skolars Rugby League’s team manager Rachael Ankomah was then appointed in a prime focus role aimed at giving a voice to women, and went on to play a pivotal role in the launch of the “Pretty Girls Play Rugby League” campaign in July 2020. This resulted a lot more people being informed and many more women getting involved.

Ankomah has given a brief account on the journey thus far stating:
“Training officially started on the 8th of October for the ladies.
“In November, it was decided by the committee of the female Division to allocate clubs to all the ladies through a balloting, adopting the names of the existing male clubs.
“The managers of the various clubs, the executives of the Federation and the players in an official launch, had all of the 43 ladies allocated to one of the five existing clubs”.
She has further urged the history makers of the women’s division to preserve the sport, stay focused whilst also calling for logistical support to continue making steady advancements.
General Manager of Rugby League Federation Ghana, Jafaru Awudu Mustapha said:
“We have always believed we will would move a step closer towards our vision once we keep our efforts focused on our development. The structures we have drawn from within and our hardworking members keep itching for futher progress and worthwhile development experiences.”
