St Patrick’s & Mackay breaks Confraternity drought

St Patrick’s & Mackay breaks Confraternity drought

One of the most successful schools in Confraternity Carnival history broke a 22-year drought today in a dramatic finish to the prestigious schoolboys’ carnival in Rockhampton.

St Patrick’s College, Mackay – the school of State of Origin players Daly Cherry-Evans, Wendell Sailor and Shannon Hegarty – outlasted gallant Padua College, Kedron 10-8 in a gripping Confraternity Shield final.

The decider came down to a scrambling finish as Padua College peppered the Mackay line – their last play went through nine sets of hands and included a regathered kick – but the Brisbane team was unable to haul in a 10-0 halftime deficit.

The win restored St Patrick’s College to the top of a Confraternity Carnival they once dominated. In a 16-year period from 1988, St Patrick’s won eight Shield titles including five in a row.

But they had not won since defeating St Mary’s College, Toowoomba in the 2003 decider on the Gold Coast.

This is the 45th Confraternity Carnival, drawing 56 boys’ teams and 16 girls’ teams from Catholic and Independent schools across the state.

The Carnival is run by Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Rugby League and was hosted by The Cathedral College.

This “Confro” was difficult to predict.

The Shield semi-finalists included teams from Rockhampton, Yeppoon, Mackay and Brisbane. And the mixture of young squad and schools who had come off their rugby union seasons made it guesswork.

The carnival came down to a Mackay team led by cane farmer and rookie coach Shane Mau making the most of its opportunities in wins over Confro powerhouses Ignatius Park College, Townsville, hosts The Cathedral College and the brave Padua College team.

“That was so nail-biting,” Mau said. “We were riding that finish because it was just such a close game.

“We got to the front but Padua came back. They are just a great side. They never give in and we knew we would have to work really hard to beat them.

“To be a part of this is just so special for everyone involved. Our squad is just a great group of young men.

“We’ve got some really good players in our team who are well known in schoolboy footy but we also have a full squad that just never stopped trying all week.

The win comes down to the whole squad.”

Halfback Adam McSherry, contracted to the NRL Dolphins, is one of those high-profile schoolboys who caused trouble for St Patrick’s rivals across the week.

McSherry created one of the first line breaks as St Patrick’s dominated the first half before Padua College’s reply.

Five-eighth and player-of-the-carnival Damon Humphrys, contracted to the NRL Bulldogs, sparked the Padua attack as the southerners scored twice in the second half.

Padua College had played its first rugby league game of the year in Monday’s opening pool round after claiming the Associated Independent Colleges’ First XV rugby union title. St Patrick’s had been involved in their regional rugby league competition.

Goal-kicking proved the difference with McSherry’s single conversion of St Patrick’s two tries enough to land St Patrick’s ninth Shield triumph.

The Bob Lindner Trophy, for the bottom tier of Division 1, stayed locally as Rockhampton Grammar School claimed the title on countback after a 20-all draw with Marymount College, Burleigh Waters.

The Division 2 Neil Bloxsidge Plate

The Division 2 Neil Bloxsidge Plate went to St Laurence’s College, South Brisbane 18-12 against AIC rival Villanova College, Coorparoo.

Another AIC school – St Edmund’s College, Ipswich – claimed the Division 2 Confraternity Bowl in an 18-0 victory over All Souls St Gabriel’s College, Charters Towers.

Division 3 was again hard-fought between teams from across the state. The highest-ranking Confraternity Cup went to Townsville’s Ryan Catholic College with a 16-0 win over McAuley College, Beaudesert.

The Confraternity Challenge was won by St Mary’s College, Cairns, defeating St John’s School, Roma 20-16.

The inaugural Division 4 final was fought out between Brisbane Catholic Education schools Trinity College, Beenleigh and Emmaus College, Jimboomba.

Trinity College won the Confraternity Classic 10-4, surviving a last-minute attacking raid by Emmaus College.

Marymount College Surges Into Open Confro Semis

One of the most open Confraternity Carnivals in memory has brought together three unbeaten semi-finalists and a Marymount College team that rode an extraordinary path into the final four of the famous schools meet in Brisbane today.

Marymount College, coached by NRL premiership winner Matt Geyer and featuring famous rugby league names, kept their cool in two dramatic finishes today at St Laurence’s playing fields at Runcorn.

Geyer went to bed last night thinking his players could be denied a shot at the historic Shield because their path to the semi-finals was so tough.

Burleigh Waters school needed to win today’s final pool match while hoping two-time defending champions Ignatius Park College lost their first “Confro” game since 2018.

It all unfolded within three tense minutes as Ignatius Park College lost to surging Emmaus College.

Rockhampton while Marymount College scored after the siren on the neighbouring field to secure a superior points differential to qualify for the quarter-finals. Until that try,

Marymount and Ignatius Park had been locked on the same points differential.

Marymount College then came from behind to defeat The Cathedral College, Rockhampton 10-6 to reach Thursday’s semi-finals along with three unbeaten teams.

Three unbeaten teams

Emmaus College, Rockhampton; St Brendan’s College, Yeppoon; and St Patrick’s College, Mackay.

The Confraternity Carnival, sponsored by CQ University and staged by Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Rugby League, brings together 52 boys’ teams and 12 girls’ teams from Catholic and Independent schools across Queensland.

The first carnival was played in 1980 with a host of Queensland’s greatest players emerging from the event.

This day is nicknamed “heartbreak Tuesday” because four draining matches in two days, including a quarter-final, can knock teams out of the Confraternity Shield race before tomorrow’s rest day.

The heartbreak came today for Ignatius Park College. The runner-up in last year’s Queensland open schools titles and the most consistent Confro team over more than a decade was a stunning casualty.

Meanwhile, Marymount College rejoiced as they reached the last four of the Confraternity Shield after storming home late in the semi-darkness at Bundaberg in 2019.

“I went to bed last night really hoping the players could make it through today because we know they’re a quality team but the path today wasn’t easy,” Geyer said.

“This is my ninth carnival and I can’t remember one that’s been so open so it’s a great opportunity for all teams in the semi-finals.

“We know we’ll have to play well on Thursday but we have a really good bunch of kids who play the game in the right spirit which is what this carnival is all about. It’s exciting to be getting ready for a semi-final.”

Some of the Marymount players’ surnames are familiar to league fans.

Centre Phillip Coates’ is the brother of Queensland winger Xavier; Oscar Laffranchi is the son of former Blues Origin forward Anthony; and powerful backrower Cooper Bai is the son of former PNG star Marcus.

But it took the speed of halfback Jimi Pedlow to claim the winning try for Marymount as a brave TCC scrambled to defend a counter-attack that broke their 6-4 at halftime.

Marymount will meet St Brendan’s College, Yeppoon in the semi-finals. The Confro heavyweight has won its four matches across the first two days and showcased its power with a 46-0 win over St Augustine’s College, Cairns in the quarter-final.

Thursday’s second semi-final brings together Emmaus College, Rockhampton and St Patrick’s College, Mackay.

Emmaus College has maintained its impressive lead-up form with an unbeaten run into the semi-finals.

Their 16-0 win over Ignatius Park College in the final pool match sounded a warning backed up by a 20-0 semi-final win over Shalom College, Bundaberg.

St Patrick’s College overcame an impressive Iona College, Lindum in their quarter-final 18-6. Last year’s runners-up made the most of their opportunities to remain unbeaten for the week.

A total of 16 teams each contest the boys’ Divisions 1 and 2 while 20 teams are playing in Division 3.

The second-tier Bob Linder Trophy will be decided between: Marist College, Ashgrove; St Peter Claver College, Riverview; Ignatius Park College; and St Mary’s College, Toowoomba.

They each won their quarter-finals this afternoon.

Ignatius Park faced one of the most stunning losses in Confro history only to hold on to defeat Division 1 debutants St Edmund’s College, Ipswich 18-16 in their Trophy quarter-final.

St Edmund’s dominated the last 10 minutes of the match in one of the most stirring performances in recent carnival history.

The quarter-finals were held across Division 2 today and 2022 champions Our Lady of the Southern Cross College, Dalby are in the running again.

They reached the semi-finals alongside Columba Catholic College, Charters Towers; St Columban’s College, Caboolture and host school St Laurence’s College, South Brisbane.

The quarter-finals for Division 3 will be contested on Thursday with finals for all Divisions on Friday.

New Teams Emerge In Confraternity Carnival Girls’ Draw

St Patrick’s College, Mackay took a step towards a treasured Confraternity Shield for their school in an unbeaten start to the girls’ rugby league competition in Brisbane today.

St Patrick’s won their two opening matches in the third edition of the girls’ draw at the famous Confraternity Carnival.

Which is in its 43rd year of bringing together Catholic and Independent Schools from across the state.

Rockhampton schools Emmaus College and The Cathedral College were also unbeaten after two matches, leaving a final pool match tomorrow to determine the semi-finalists in the afternoon.

Twelve teams are contesting the girls’ competition to be split into tiers to compete for the top Confraternity Shield and the second-tier Confraternity Trophy.

St Patrick’s College, Mackay have one of the proudest histories in Confraternity Carnival, stretching back to the boys’ unmatched five-year Shield winning streak from 1988 with teams including future league legend Wendell Sailor.

But St Patrick’s haven’t claimed a Shield since 2003.

The girls and boys’ teams were excellent last year but lost their finals when thousands of spectators watched on in Mackay.

This girls’ team has made a positive start under new coach Imogen Healy, a town planner who is still playing top-grade league as a halfback in Mackay.

Healy has brought together a team with 11 players from last year’s campaign and some who featured in the inaugural girls’ competition in 2021 before Covid-19 forced an early end to the carnival.

“Some of these girls have been playing together since they were in Year 7 so they’ve developed good combinations on the field but they’re also friends off the field,” Healy said.

“We have spoken about what happened last year and the chance to get another opportunity this year.

They have come here to do their best and to see where that can take us.”

The Cathedral College made a statement when they inflicted the first loss in Confro girls’ history on Marymount College, Burleigh Waters.

Last year’s Shield champions fell 8-4 to The Cathedral College before rebounding with a 40-4 win over Townsville’s Southern Cross Catholic College.

Emmaus College, Rockhampton also staked a claim with wins today over St Margaret Mary’s College, Townsville and St Ursula’s College, Yeppoon.

Three new teams played their first girls’ matches today: Emmaus College, Jimboomba; Mt Maria College, Mitchelton; and Trinity College, Beenleigh. Mt Maria began its campaign with a 22-10 win over Southern Cross Catholic College.

The winners of tomorrow’s semi-finals will qualify for Thursday’s deciders. The girls’ Shield grand final will be held at 11am on Thursday, one hour after the Trophy grand final.

2022 best team in Ignatius Park history ?

The North Queensland rugby league production factory that put Michael Morgan, Scott Prince and Valentine Holmes on the path to the NRL believes its Class of 2022 could be the school’s best yet.

Ignatius Park College’s alumni list is glittering, with Origin players Kalyn Ponga, Danny Moore, Kyle Feldt, Coen Hess and Aidan Guerra among the best to emerge from its Townsville halls in recent years.

For all its development success Iggy Park has never progressed past the national schoolboys quarter-finals.

School officials believe this year’s crop of students has what it takes to surpass the best teams in the College’s rich history.

“Definitely,” declared Steve Lansley, in his seventh campaign as head coach.

“The fact that we only let in two tries for the week (at the Confraternity Carnival) says that this is a really strong group of football players.”

Ignatius Park dominated June’s independent schools carnival, scoring 196 points and conceding 10 on an undefeated run which included a 32-0 defeat of St Patrick’s College, Mackay in the Shield final.

Co-captain Jamal Shibasaki, a 100kg-plus lock who will follow in the footsteps of elder brother Gehamat to the Brisbane Broncos upon graduation, believes his teammates can live up to the standards of the great Ignatius Park teams of the past.

“100 per cent. Living up those standards would be good,” Shibasaki said.

“There will be ups and downs throughout the year but like Lansley said, we have the team to achieve those goals.

“There’s a bit of pressure but yeah, I’m very confident with the team we have, especially coming off the Confro win. With our team chemistry and bonding I feel very confident.”

The Cowboys have signed four students in prop Henry Teutau, backrower Jonah Raidaveta, halfback Matthew Hunter and flying winger Tekelu Mene, while the Broncos have Shibasaki.

Shibasaki expects more of his teammates to sign professional contracts after their dominant Confraternity campaign.

“They’ve definitely been looked at,” Shibasaki said.

“They’re not contracted but they are exceptional players. I think our forward pack, even the players who aren’t signed, did really well with the one-percenters and I think that’s what made us very good in the final against St Pat’s.”

No.7 Hunter, Ignatius Park’s other co-captain, said it would take even greater focus to turn a promising start to the 2022 season into one for the history books.

“It’d be hard to beat (the old teams), we’ve had many, many talents in the old boys, but I believe we could go through the Aaron Payne Cup and hopefully make some national finals,” Hunter said.

“It all comes down to training and readjusting our focus. The boys won’t get ahead of themselves. Our coach Lansley will put us in the right direction and we’ll just follow.”

Confraternity Carnival set for thrilling finals day

St Patrick’s College, Mackay rode the emotions of decades of Confraternity Carnival memories as they surged into a prized boys’ final tomorrow against the power of Townsville’s Ignatius Park College.

In front of a huge home crowd, including old boys who gathered for a “Confro” reunion, St Patrick’s rolled The Cathedral College, Rockhampton 16-6 in their semi-final at BB Print Stadium to move within one win of their first Confraternity Shield since 2003.

They will have to topple defending champions Ignatius Park College, who won a battle of attrition with St Brendan’s College, Yeppoon, 12-6 in a gripping semi-final.

This 42nd Confraternity Carnival, sponsored by CQ University and staged by Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Rugby League, brings together 48 boys’ teams and nine girls’ teams from Catholic and Independent schools across Queensland.

A host of Queensland’s greatest players have emerged from the event.

St Patrick’s coach Michael Comerford said his players were buoyed by the home support, which reached its loudest level when backrower Liam Doherty stomped through The Cathedral College defence for a decisive try with 15 minutes remaining.

“It’s huge to be able to play before this crowd and it’s very special for the players,” Comerford said.

“It’s been 26 years since Mackay last hosted Confro and the whole city has got behind it.

Some of these players will go on to very high levels of footy but, for some others, this will be the most important games they will play, so it’s something to cherish.”

The Mackay crowd took a breath after The Cathedral College prop Ashton Saunders barged over for a 6-0 lead.

But St Patrick’s regained their spark to notch two tries from kicks, either side of halftime, before Doherty’s individual effort put away the gallant Rockhampton team.

On Field 2, the famed rivalry between St Brendan’s and Ignatius Park promised a tight match, but the Townsville team barrelled down field for a try after two minutes to prop Jamaine Stanley.

“I thought that early try really seemed to get Brendan’s focused because they really aimed up after that,” Ignatius Park coach Steve Lansley said.

“They’re a really tough team and the game became a grind with both teams trying to break through. I was really proud of the way our boys defended.”

A 38th minute penalty goal pushed Ignatius Park ahead 8-0, but St Brendan’s hit back two minutes later when Melbourne Storm-contracted fullback Matthew Hill regathered his own kick for a fine try.

That set up a thrilling finishy, but Ignatius Park edged away when their enterprising style of football led to a cross-field kick and a try in the left corner to Rayzarlin Pearson with five minutes remaining.

St Brendan’s had a full attacking set on the Ignatius Park line inside the last two minutes, but a knock-on spoiled their hopes.

Marymount College claim historic Confraternity title

Tomorrow’s finals day will feature six deciders for trophies while the rest of the 48 teams will play off for final finishing spots.

The Bob Lindner Trophy final, featuring Division 1 teams, will feature Brisbane’s Padua College against Bundaberg’s Shalom College.

The highest trophy in the Division 2 rankings is the Neil Bloxsidge Plate which will pit St Edmund’s College, Ipswich against Dalby’s Our Lady of the Southern Cross College.

The Division 3 trophy final will be fought out between Mt Maria College from Mitchelton and Hervey Bay’s Xavier Catholic College for the Confraternity Cup.

After tomorrow’s final at midday, the QISSRL Merit team will be named from the best players across all divisions over the four days of competition play.
