New Teams Emerge In Confraternity Carnival Girls’ Draw

St Patrick’s College, Mackay took a step towards a treasured Confraternity Shield for their school in an unbeaten start to the girls’ rugby league competition in Brisbane today.

St Patrick’s won their two opening matches in the third edition of the girls’ draw at the famous Confraternity Carnival.

Which is in its 43rd year of bringing together Catholic and Independent Schools from across the state.

Rockhampton schools Emmaus College and The Cathedral College were also unbeaten after two matches, leaving a final pool match tomorrow to determine the semi-finalists in the afternoon.

Twelve teams are contesting the girls’ competition to be split into tiers to compete for the top Confraternity Shield and the second-tier Confraternity Trophy.

St Patrick’s College, Mackay have one of the proudest histories in Confraternity Carnival, stretching back to the boys’ unmatched five-year Shield winning streak from 1988 with teams including future league legend Wendell Sailor.

But St Patrick’s haven’t claimed a Shield since 2003.

The girls and boys’ teams were excellent last year but lost their finals when thousands of spectators watched on in Mackay.

This girls’ team has made a positive start under new coach Imogen Healy, a town planner who is still playing top-grade league as a halfback in Mackay.

Healy has brought together a team with 11 players from last year’s campaign and some who featured in the inaugural girls’ competition in 2021 before Covid-19 forced an early end to the carnival.

“Some of these girls have been playing together since they were in Year 7 so they’ve developed good combinations on the field but they’re also friends off the field,” Healy said.

“We have spoken about what happened last year and the chance to get another opportunity this year.

They have come here to do their best and to see where that can take us.”

The Cathedral College made a statement when they inflicted the first loss in Confro girls’ history on Marymount College, Burleigh Waters.

Last year’s Shield champions fell 8-4 to The Cathedral College before rebounding with a 40-4 win over Townsville’s Southern Cross Catholic College.

Emmaus College, Rockhampton also staked a claim with wins today over St Margaret Mary’s College, Townsville and St Ursula’s College, Yeppoon.

Three new teams played their first girls’ matches today: Emmaus College, Jimboomba; Mt Maria College, Mitchelton; and Trinity College, Beenleigh. Mt Maria began its campaign with a 22-10 win over Southern Cross Catholic College.

The winners of tomorrow’s semi-finals will qualify for Thursday’s deciders. The girls’ Shield grand final will be held at 11am on Thursday, one hour after the Trophy grand final.

Confraternity Carnival Takes Off

Confraternity Carnival Takes Off At Suncorp Stadium

The 2023 Confraternity Carnival opened at Queensland rugby league’s most famous ground today, sparking another week of action featuring more than 1200 students from Catholic and Independent schools across the state.

Host school St Laurence’s College met Villanova College at Suncorp Stadium in the curtain-raiser to the Broncos-Titans NRL clash. It was the first time that “Confro” had featured at Suncorp Stadium in the carnival’s four decades of history.

St Laurence’s opened the carnival in style with a 26-16 win over Villanova in the boys’ Division 2 match.

The Associated Independent Colleges rivals attracted large groups of supporters to Suncorp Stadium for a game that showed both teams are prepared for strong Carnival performances.

St Laurence’s five-try haul was shared among the team including, Finn Mackay, Jack Tuite, Hudson Burgess and Campbell Wilson.

Villanova made it to the line three times thanks to two tries by Jackson Connor and a thirty-third minute try by Larry Clark.

An opening ceremony and the traditional Mass service will be held tonight with all squads featuring.

The Carnival proper will begin tomorrow – the traditional Monday start – at St Laurence’s College’s playing fields at Runcorn and run until Friday when finals are held. This will be the 43rd Confro and the first hosted by St Laurence’s College.

It will again be sponsored by CQ University.

More than 1000 schoolboys and more than 200 schoolgirls will play this week. They will represent 52 schools in the boys’ competition and 12 in the girls draw.

That’s an increase of four boys’ teams and three girls’ teams on last year’s Carnival in Mackay.

In its four decades, Confro has become one of the nation’s best rugby league nurseries.

Seven Confraternity Carnival graduates featured in the Maroons squad for the second match of the 2023 State of Origin series: Daly Cherry-Evans (St Patrick’s College, Mackay), Cameron Munster (Emmaus College, Rockhampton).

Valentine Holmes (Ignatius Park College, Townsville), Ben Hunt and Harry Grant (St Brendan’s College, Yeppoon), Lindsay Collins (Padua College, Kedron) and Xavier Coates (Marymount College, Burleigh Waters).

Organised by Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Rugby League, Confraternity Carnival was held every year from 1980 until 2019.

In 2020, the carnival could not be held because of Covid-19. In 2021, “Confro” had reached its quarter-final stages at Iona College when a Covid-19 lockdown in southeast Queensland forced its immediate cancellation.

It returned to normal last year

It returned to normal last year with Townsville’s Ignatius Park College winning a second consecutive Confraternity Shield.

The boys’ carnival is contested in three divisions of 16 teams (Divisions 1 and 2) and 20 teams (Division 3).

The make-up of the divisions can be found on the QISSRL website: www.confraternitycarnival.com.au Teams can play up to two matches each day.

The girls’ teams will each play two games on Monday 26 June and two games on Tuesday 27 June.

Those results will determine the order for Thursday’s finals, during which each team will play one match.

The girls’ Shield grand final will be held at 11am on Thursday 29 June. The Trophy grand final will be held for the first time at 10am on 29 June.

The North Queensland rugby league production factory that put Michael Morgan, Scott Prince and Valentine Holmes on the path to the NRL believes its Class of 2022 could be the school’s best yet.

Ignatius Park College’s alumni list is glittering, with Origin players Kalyn Ponga, Danny Moore, Kyle Feldt, Coen Hess and Aidan Guerra among the best to emerge from its Townsville halls in recent years.

For all its development success Iggy Park has never progressed past the national schoolboys quarter-finals.

School officials believe this year’s crop of students has what it takes to surpass the best teams in the College’s rich history.

“Definitely,” declared Steve Lansley, in his seventh campaign as head coach.

“The fact that we only let in two tries for the week (at the Confraternity Carnival) says that this is a really strong group of football players.”

Ignatius Park dominated June’s independent schools carnival, scoring 196 points and conceding 10 on an undefeated run which included a 32-0 defeat of St Patrick’s College, Mackay in the Shield final.

Co-captain Jamal Shibasaki, a 100kg-plus lock who will follow in the footsteps of elder brother Gehamat to the Brisbane Broncos upon graduation, believes his teammates can live up to the standards of the great Ignatius Park teams of the past.

“100 per cent. Living up those standards would be good,” Shibasaki said.

“There will be ups and downs throughout the year but like Lansley said, we have the team to achieve those goals.

“There’s a bit of pressure but yeah, I’m very confident with the team we have, especially coming off the Confro win. With our team chemistry and bonding I feel very confident.”

The Cowboys have signed four students in prop Henry Teutau, backrower Jonah Raidaveta, halfback Matthew Hunter and flying winger Tekelu Mene, while the Broncos have Shibasaki.

Shibasaki expects more of his teammates to sign professional contracts after their dominant Confraternity campaign.

“They’ve definitely been looked at,” Shibasaki said.

“They’re not contracted but they are exceptional players. I think our forward pack, even the players who aren’t signed, did really well with the one-percenters and I think that’s what made us very good in the final against St Pat’s.”

No.7 Hunter, Ignatius Park’s other co-captain, said it would take even greater focus to turn a promising start to the 2022 season into one for the history books.

“It’d be hard to beat (the old teams), we’ve had many, many talents in the old boys, but I believe we could go through the Aaron Payne Cup and hopefully make some national finals,” Hunter said.

“It all comes down to training and readjusting our focus. The boys won’t get ahead of themselves. Our coach Lansley will put us in the right direction and we’ll just follow.”

Ignatius Park College claims Confraternity Shield

Townsville’s Ignatius Park College stamped itself as the modern powerhouse of the Confraternity Shield as it stormed to victory over host school St Patrick’s College, Mackay, today in the first final since 2019.

Ignatius Park’s 32-0 win, in front of a crowd of 5000 people at BB Print Stadium, was its sixth Confraternity Shield victory in the last 10 years and just reward for a dominant week by the north Queenslanders.

The alma mater of the likes of Valentine Holmes, Michael Morgan, Coen Hess and Aidan Guerra became the first school to defend the Shield title since St Brendan’s College, Yeppoon won in 2015.

And they did it with the words of Morgan and Hess spurring them on.

Both players sent video messages to the Ignatius Park team telling them that the week of Confraternity Carnival was among the most special in their lives because they played with their mates in a carnival unlike any other in Australian rugby league.

“Those messages were really important for our players because it reinforced to them the opportunity that a week of Confro brings,” Ignatius Park coach Steven Lansley said.

“Our college really enjoys playing in this carnival. The players buy into camp here and they don’t want to let each other down. Almost all of these players have been together at the college for many years so they are genuine mates.

“We are very open with the fact that Confraternity Carnival is our biggest target of the year.

We start planning in January so it’s satisfying to see it all come together for the boys today.”

Action from the 42dn Confraternity Carnival. Photo: Academy Photography

This 42nd Confraternity Carnival, sponsored by CQ University and staged by Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Rugby League, brings together 48 boys’ teams and nine girls’ teams from Catholic and Independent schools across Queensland.

A host of Queensland’s greatest players have emerged from the event and there were plenty of comparisons this week to the last full carnival in Bundaberg three years ago before the COVID pandemic ruined the events in 2020 and 2021.

In 2019, Ignatius Park conceded only two tries across the six games during the week before rolling The Cathedral College 34-0 in the decider.

This week, the blue-and-white wall of Ignatius Park again conceded only two tries while rattling up 196 points in its three pool matches and three finals.

Today’s decider was much anticipated after St Patrick’s College won through to its first final since 2003 with a quality team featuring 10 players with links to NRL clubs.

But they could not handle the size, speed and defensive mettle of Ignatius Park as coach Lansley’s six months of planning yielded a treasured win.

“Defensively, these players just didn’t want to give in today,” Lansley said.

“We know that St Pat’s are a very good team and they had this huge crowd here so it wasn’t going to be easy. But we started well and we probably took the crowd out of it.”

Ignatius Park opened the scoring with a try in the seventh minute to Jack Prior before the power of prop Jamaine Stanley in the 23rd minute for a 14-0 lead. St Patrick’s threw plenty at the Ignatius Park defence, but it held firm.

In the play-off for third place, St Brendan’s College, Yeppoon defeated Rockhampton’s The Cathedral College 38-6 while the Bob Linder Trophy, for the second half of the Division 1 teams, was claimed by Shalom College over Padua College.

The Neil Bloxsidge Plate – the highest prize for the Division 2 teams – was won by Dalby’s Our Lady of the Southern Cross College in a 28-10 win over St Edmund’s College, Ipswich.

Only two weeks ago, the Dalby school was entered for Division 3, yet it accepted a request to move into the higher division when a team asked to push back.

The other three trophies awarded today went to Clairvaux MacKillop College, Mt Gravatt (Confraternity Bowl), Xavier Catholic College, Hervey Bay (Confraternity Cup) and St Anthony’s College, Townsville (Men of League Challenge).

Four players each from Ignatius Park College and St Patrick’s College, Mackay, were selected in the QISSRL Merit team including player of the carnival Jamal Shibasaki.

The 43rd Confraternity Carnival will be held in June next year in Brisbane, hosted by St Laurence’s College.

Confraternity Carnival set for thrilling finals day

St Patrick’s College, Mackay rode the emotions of decades of Confraternity Carnival memories as they surged into a prized boys’ final tomorrow against the power of Townsville’s Ignatius Park College.

In front of a huge home crowd, including old boys who gathered for a “Confro” reunion, St Patrick’s rolled The Cathedral College, Rockhampton 16-6 in their semi-final at BB Print Stadium to move within one win of their first Confraternity Shield since 2003.

They will have to topple defending champions Ignatius Park College, who won a battle of attrition with St Brendan’s College, Yeppoon, 12-6 in a gripping semi-final.

A host of Queensland’s greatest players have emerged from the event.

St Patrick’s coach Michael Comerford said his players were buoyed by the home support, which reached its loudest level when backrower Liam Doherty stomped through The Cathedral College defence for a decisive try with 15 minutes remaining.

“It’s huge to be able to play before this crowd and it’s very special for the players,” Comerford said.

“It’s been 26 years since Mackay last hosted Confro and the whole city has got behind it.

Some of these players will go on to very high levels of footy but, for some others, this will be the most important games they will play, so it’s something to cherish.”

The Mackay crowd took a breath after The Cathedral College prop Ashton Saunders barged over for a 6-0 lead.

But St Patrick’s regained their spark to notch two tries from kicks, either side of halftime, before Doherty’s individual effort put away the gallant Rockhampton team.

On Field 2, the famed rivalry between St Brendan’s and Ignatius Park promised a tight match, but the Townsville team barrelled down field for a try after two minutes to prop Jamaine Stanley.

“I thought that early try really seemed to get Brendan’s focused because they really aimed up after that,” Ignatius Park coach Steve Lansley said.

“They’re a really tough team and the game became a grind with both teams trying to break through. I was really proud of the way our boys defended.”

A 38th minute penalty goal pushed Ignatius Park ahead 8-0, but St Brendan’s hit back two minutes later when Melbourne Storm-contracted fullback Matthew Hill regathered his own kick for a fine try.

That set up a thrilling finishy, but Ignatius Park edged away when their enterprising style of football led to a cross-field kick and a try in the left corner to Rayzarlin Pearson with five minutes remaining.

St Brendan’s had a full attacking set on the Ignatius Park line inside the last two minutes, but a knock-on spoiled their hopes.

Tomorrow’s finals day will feature six deciders for trophies while the rest of the 48 teams will play off for final finishing spots.

The Bob Lindner Trophy final, featuring Division 1 teams, will feature Brisbane’s Padua College against Bundaberg’s Shalom College.

The highest trophy in the Division 2 rankings is the Neil Bloxsidge Plate which will pit St Edmund’s College, Ipswich against Dalby’s Our Lady of the Southern Cross College.

The Division 3 trophy final will be fought out between Mt Maria College from Mitchelton and Hervey Bay’s Xavier Catholic College for the Confraternity Cup.

After tomorrow’s final at midday, the QISSRL Merit team will be named from the best players across all divisions over the four days of competition play.

Marymount College claim historic Confraternity title

Marymount College’s long wait for a crack at the first girls’ Confraternity Carnival title ended in triumph today with victory in a stirring final in Mackay.

Gold Coast’s Marymount College defeated home team St Patrick’s College 18-10, lifting the CQ University Shield for the first time after waiting through two carnivals ruined by the COVID pandemic.

The inaugural girls’ competition was scheduled for 2020, but play wasn’t possible.

Last year, Marymount had won all three of its pool matches at Iona College before a snap COVID lockdown cancelled the carnival before the finals could be played.

That left Marymount primed for another tilt this year, bringing eight players back from the 2021 carnival led by captain and Queensland Under 19 representative player Lily-Rose Kolc.

The excellent backrower was named player of the final as Marymount scored two tries in each half, taking the air out of a crowd of several thousand people hoping St Patrick’s could overcome the visiting team.

Marymount delivered the highlight of the match when its forward pack peppered the St Patrick’s line before halfback Lexi Samuels delivered a pinpoint kick that fell on to the fingertips of flying winger Sienna Jones.

It was a try that summed up the skill level of a girls’ carnival packed with big hits, speed and attacking highlights.

Nine teams from Catholic schools across Queensland contested the carnival with Marymount winning all four of its pool matches before its finals win.

“This carnival helps to create another pathway for young women in rugby league,” Hannah Richardson, a member of the Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Rugby League committee, said.

“Some of these girls’ mothers, aunties and sisters have paved the way for this in the last 20 or 30 years and today we award the first Confraternity Carnival girls’ title.”

The carnival began in 1980 with six boys’ teams playing in Bundaberg and it has grown every year to feature 48 boys’ teams.

The momentum for a girls’ competition developed in recent years with Marymount among the teams to embrace the concept.

The Burleigh Waters school was made to work for the title as St Patrick’s moved within four points of the lead after Gracie Watt twisted in a tackle to score next to the posts.

But Marymount put the game out of reach when Zoe Gilbert crossed in the left corner with five minutes remaining.

Earlier today, Emmaus College claimed third place with a 12-4 win over fellow Rockhampton school The Cathedral College.

Emmaus was led by Queensland Under 19 squad member Lillian Yarrow, who was the inaugural winner of the Reg Cannon Award for the female player of the carnival. Yarrow was outstanding for Emmaus across the five matches contested this week.

The Carbine Club Spirit of the Carnival Award was won by The Cathedral College’s tireless halfback Alenna Whipp.

Shalom College fullback Taylor Driver was named the Girls’ Player with Most Potential.

Confraternity Carnival semi-finalists set

Rugby league’s famous Confraternity Carnival has thrown up a mouth-watering semi-final draw featuring its most successful teams after a brilliant “heartbreak Tuesday” in Mackay.

Tuesday has been nicknamed as “heartbreak” day as teams play their fourth match in just two days.

The fatigue and the tension of carnival football have brought teams undone and buried their trophy chances ahead of tomorrow’s traditional rest day.

St Brendan’s College knew the feeling from its stumble in 2019 when the finals were last contested ahead of COVID disruptions.

In 2019, St Brendan’s College led Padua College 18-0 at halftime, but failed to advance to the last four.

That setback was in the minds of the Brendan’s faithful today as they moved to an 18-0 lead against 2018 champions St Mary’s College, Toowoomba.

But St Mary’s hit back to trail 18-10 and then had a bobbling chance to scorch downfield only for a knock-on to present an opportunity for St Brendan’s to stead for a 24-14 win.

Scott Minto’s team showed resolve across 160 combined minutes of football in the two days, qualifying for a semi-final showdown with Ignatius Park College.

“My brothers have probably been to about 20 Confros between them and they all told me that Tuesday afternoon is the toughest part of the week. You just want to get through it and get into the semis,” coach Minto said.

“It was pleasing to get that win because the boys are starting to get used to carnival football with all its bumps and bruises. We’ve been improving across the games and we’ll have a rest now and get ready for Thursday.”

St Brendan’s will need to be at the top of its game to counter a rampaging Ignatius Park College, which has rattled up an aggregate score of 152-4 in its four matches.

Today’s 30-4 quarter-final win over a brave Iona College, Lindum – playing its first league matches of the season and keeping its line intact in the second half – included the first try that Ignatius Park has conceded during the carnival.

Coach Steven Lansley has his team primed for the final four, but admitted Thursday’s match would be a big test against a St Brendan’s team that won their Aaron Payne Cup semi-final encounter last year.

“We know how good a team Brendan’s are and it’s so hard to win Confro,” Lansley said.

“They’ve done it more than any other school so that’s a big test for our players.”

Thursday’s semi-finals are guaranteed to draw a strong crowd after St Patrick’s College, Mackay advanced with a 28-0 quarter-final win over Cairns’ St Augustine’s College.

The result was impressive for the home team, striving to win its first Shield title in 19 years as it hosts the carnival for the first time since 1996.

St Patrick’s will meet The Cathedral College in the semi-final after the Rockhampton team survived the closest of the quarter-finals with a 14-10 win over a valiant Marymount College, Burleigh Waters.

The match brought together the teams coached by best mates and Melbourne Storm NRL premiership team mates Tony Martin (TCC) and Matt Geyer (Marymount).

Both men had to endure the nerves of a dramatic finish as Marymount received a penalty and mounted a desperate attacking raid after the siren, only to fall short.

After the boys’ pool matches were contested by three divisions of 16 teams, the carnival moved into six separate draws of eight teams with the Confraternity Shield the most prized of the six trophies on offer.

The second-tier Bob Linder Trophy will pit Shalom College, Bundaberg, St Peter Claver College, Riverview, Marist College, Ashgrove and Padua College, Kedron in its semi-finals.

Meanwhile, four other trophies will reach the final four on Thursday while those teams that lost quarter-finals will play off in separate matches with all teams playing six matches over the four days of competition.

The girls’ competition continued to impress today with Marymount remaining unbeaten while St Patrick’s College, Mackay, Emmaus College, Rockhampton and The Cathedral College all won three matches.

Marymount is 7-0 in Confraternity Carnival play after winning all three of its pool matches last year before a snap COVID lockdown prevented finals.

Mackay has proven a happy hunting ground for St Brendan’s College rugby league team and they are hoping that will again be the case when the Confraternity Carnival kicks off on Monday.

They won ‘Confro’ the two times it was previously held in that city – in 1987 and 1996.

They also won Queensland’s premier schoolboys rugby league competition, the Aaron Payne Cup, there last year.

It will be a new-look side taking to the field in the green and gold this year. While several faces remain from 2021, a crop of new and exciting players will be involved in this campaign.

St Brendan’s is one of 48 boys teams taking part. Fellow Central Queensland schools The Cathedral College, Rockhampton Grammar, Emmaus College and Marist College Emerald will also be in action.

There are also nine schools contesting the second girls’ event, among them TCC, Emmaus and St Ursula’s College Yeppoon.

Teams will be raring to go at ‘Confro

Teams will be raring to go at ‘Confro’, which was impacted by Covid the past two years.

The carnival did not go ahead in 2020 because of the pandemic and in 2021, it reached the quarter final stages when a Covid lockdown in south-east Queensland forced its immediate cancellation.

St Brendan’s coach Scott Minto.

St Brendan’s is the most successful school in the history of the event, which started in 1980. They have won it 13 times, their most recent victory coming in 2015.

They are in a Division 1 pool alongside Padua College, Shalom College and Marymount College this year.

Coach Scott Minto, a 53-game NRL veteran, is optimistic about St Brendan’s chances but appreciates that a lot of things “need to align” before your name is etched on the trophy.

“Last year we saw just how hard games are to win. St Pat’s Mackay got us late in our round two match after we led comfortably early in that game,” he said.

“We will be making sure we prepare well so we give ourselves every chance of winning each game.”

After two wins from two rounds in the newly formed Dolphins Cup, St Brendan’s will head into Confro with plenty of confidence.

St Brendan’s fullback Matthew Hill.

Three players key to St Brendan’s Confraternity campaign:

Matthew Hill,

fullback: Matthew, who hails from the Northern Territory town of Katherine, has quickly established himself as one of Queensland schoolboys most potent attackers. Having just signed with the Melbourne Storm, he has been lethal at the back for the Capras under-21 side in recent weeks and will be looking to carry this form into the Confraternity Carnival.

Filipe Buli,

middle forward: Along with Matthew Hill, Filipe also tasted Aaron Payne Cup success in 2021. His Fijian roots have definitely started to show with his physique transforming under head of strength and conditioning coach Mick Carron. At 188cm and 104kg, he is ready-made to mix it with the best forward packs at Confraternity 2022.

Tavita Penaia,

middle forward: Tavita is the youngest of a crop of hungry young talent keen to make their mark in St Brendan’s colours.

The Queensland under-15 representative has shown in the opening rounds of the Dolphins Cup that age is just a number, dominating already experienced campaigners with his hard running, sleight of hand and aggression in defence. Look to see him paving the way through the middle of the field.
