The victor managed to hold on to its 8-4 lead at half-time to take home the coveted title.

Bass certainly showed itself as worthy winners, after claiming a try in the first minute of the game.

Scrum half Nhiamaya Moran also put a four-pointer to her name in the opening nine-minute half.

But being only one try apart, the game was still up for grabs.

It was a try from Bass right centre Mariah Fasavalu Famausili which allowed the Sydney school to extend its lead out of Erindale’s reach.

Despite losing, the efforts of Erindale’s No.7 caught the eye, as the scrym half claimed all eight of her team’s points.

REPLAY: Katrina Fanning Shield – Under-14 Grand Final: Matraville Sports High v Hunter Sports

Watch the full replay of Matraville Sports High v Hunter Sports from the Katrina Fanning Shield.

An epic second half performance has fired Matraville Sports to a dramatic 14-12 win over Hunter Sports High in the under-14 Katrina Fanning Cup grand final.

It looked as though Hunter was on course for the title, after it won the first half 8-0.

But the south Sydney school began the second period with a new lease of life, pinning four tries to its name to prevail in the decider.

It was certainly an unexpected twist, after Hunter second rower Brooke Pittman landed the first try of the game within the opening minutes.

That was followed shortly after by a four-pointer from Hunter right centre Holly Winter.

Hunter fullback Kiarni Simon crossed the line for the Newcastle side in the final few minutes, but it was not enough to overcome the point pile-on from their opposition.

Hunter Sports High has gone some way to making up for the school’s earlier disappointment by claiming the under-16 Katrina Fanning Cup title in emphatic fashion.

The Gateshead team downed Casula 24-0 in the Grand Final to emerge victorious in a one-side decider.

It came just after the school’s under-14 side had narrowly lost its grand final to Matraville

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW

Eight NSW schools will travel from far and wide to compete in the Katrina Fanning Schoolgirls Cup on Tuesday at Tuggerah, with Monaro High making the longest journey of all.

The Cooma-based school will enter a different climate as well as they trade in the cold for the Central Coast warmth in a 950km round trip.

Two other schools hoping the long journey will be worth their while are Hennessy Catholic College – 900km round trip from Young – and Red Bend Catholic College in Forbes.

The schools are split into two group and play in a round robin format, with the top two from each group qualifying for the semi-finals. The winners of those matches then face off in the grand final.

St Joseph’s High School, Aberdeen and Hunter Sports High will be the only schools making a trip south, with the other three participating schools – St Agnes Catholic College, Endeavour Sports High School and Casula High School – are from Sydney.

St Agnes, Endeavour Sports, St Joseph’s and Monaro are in one group, with Casula, Hennessy, Red Bend and Hunter Sports in the other.

It will be Endeavour’s thrid shot to claim a rugby league competition title this year, today endeavour went down to Westfields SHS in the u15 Chace Stanley Cup 10 – 16.

After their boys team fell short of reaching the Schoolboys Cup semi-finals last month. They were knocked out by Cup winners Patrician Brothers, Fairfield.

It’s now the girls’ chance to make a bit of history.

The NSWRL / NRL Katrina Fanning Cup is a schoolgirl competition, the 2022 finals were held on Tuesday 20 September at the Central Coast Sporting and Recreational fields at Tuggerah in NSW
