ASSRL National U18 Schoolboys carnival: Jett Cleary leads top five players on day 1

Jett Cleary burst out of the shadow of his famous father and brother in the opening round of ASSC. See the top five players from day one.

Jett Cleary burst out of the shadow of his famous father and brother on Monday as he set alight the Australian Second School Championships with a hat-trick in the NSW Combined Catholic Colleges win over Combined Affiliated States.

The son of Penrith coach Ivan Cleary and younger brother of Panthers and NSW star Nathan Cleary nabbed a pair of tries in the opening half and completed his hat-trick 16 minutes into the second stanza as NSW CCC made light work of their opposition.

The pick of his three tries came 16 minutes into the game when he took a pass, fended off CAS defender and raced 30 metres to score.

Jett Cleary has been a familiar figure in and around the Penrith dressing sheds in recent years, celebrating the Panthers success which has been largely orchestrated his brother and father.

He showed enough on Monday to suggest his time may coming as well. The teenager spent this year as a key figure in the Penrith SG Ball side and is aligned to the Panthers for at least another year, although rival clubs will now sit up and take notice.

TOP 5 PLAYERS FROM DAY ONE

1. Jett Cleary (NSWCCC)

Cleary was the star of the show for NSW CCC in their big win over CAS. Started the tournament as a back-up in the halves but pushing for a stating spot.

2. Cody Hopwood (NSWCCC)

The Newcastle front rower was too big and too strong for his CAS opponents. Was rewarded with a couple of tries as he trampled his opposition.

3. Wilson Decourcey (NSWCCC)

Decourcey, a Penrith centre, was too hot to handle as the NSWCCC made light work of their weaker opponents.

4. Mark Tuialii (ACT)

Classy centre Tuialii showed some silky skills to set up his outside backs and put his side on the path to victory.

5. Patrick Young (NSW )

Bulldogs fans endured a tough weekend but they can take solace in the performance of Patrick Young – son of former Wallaby Bill Young – at the schoolboys titles. He was a rock on the middle of the field for NSWCIS.

He wasn’t the only star for NSW CCC. Penrith SG Ball teammate Wilson Decourcey grabbed a couple of tries of his own along with powerful prop Cody Hopwood, who is locked into the Newcastle Knights having rejecting big offers from elsewhere.

NSW CCC were too slick and powerful for their outgunned opposition, which was largely made up of players from Victoria. However, the CAS enjoyed a moment to savour in the final minutes when Micah Warena crashed over from close to the tryline.

There was still time for Parramatta hooker Zaidas Muagututi’a to sneak over in the final minute as the NSW CCC finished the group stage with a second emphatic victory.

FAMOUS NAME MAKES BIG IMPACT ON DAY ONE

ACT made a flying start against NSW Combined Independent Schools and it saved them in the end as they enjoyed a successful day at the schoolboy titles.

The boys from the nation’s capital raced to a 22-0 lead early in the second half through the skill of halfback Jonah Anderson and the guile of hooker Xavier Caccitotti.

It was all one-way traffic until NSWCIS halfback Toby Rodwell – aligned with the Sydney Roosters – grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck.

Rodwell started the comeback when he threw a dummy and stepped through the ACT defence. Moments later, he set up a try for one of his teammates with another piece of skill.

When Coby Thomas scored in the corner it was on for young and old. ACT held on in the end but it was a nail-biting finale as they secured a 22-16 victory.

TOP FIVE PLAYS ON DAY ONE

Jett Cleary (NSWCCC)

Cleary took a pass early in the game, fended off a defender and beat the fullback in a footrace to the corner. Genuine class.

Max Mercer (ACT)

Showed some great hole running and smart footwork to slice through NSWCIS early in the second half of their game.

Micah Warena (CAS)

The combined side made up largely of Victorian kids had a tough day but Warena got his reward for staying in the fight as he snuck over from dummy half for rather lone try of the day in the infra minutes.

Toby Rodwell (NSWCIS)

It was a tough day at the office for the Combined Independent Schools but Rodwell showed his class as he bamboozled defenders with a monster dummy and step to score.

High five for Steelers

The Steelers won five from five grades on Saturday with a clean sweep over the Canberra Raiders in Junior Reps.

A win over Mounties in the women’s premiership at Ron Costello Oval, Shellharbour. Meanwhile, the Steelers Lisa Fiaola Cup side defeated the Tigers 34-6 on the road.

Hope Millard set the tone early for the Steelers in Tarsha Gale Cup action, crossing in the first minute for the first of eight tries for the home side. They would go on to lead 22-0 at the break.

Centre Mia-Rose Walsh scored three tries, and Ella Koster picked up a double in their 44-6 win over the Raiders to remain in the top four.

Tayleah Handcock had a day out with the boot with six conversions. Courtney Crawford’s side play the eighth-placed Sharks next week.

A second hat-trick in two weeks for Centre Hayden Buchanan

A second hat-trick in two weeks for Centre Hayden Buchanan set up a 30-12 win for the Steelers over the visitors in Harold Matts.

Leading 10-0 at halftime, the hosts scored four tries to two in the second stanza.

Halfback Kade Reed returned from injury after a six-week layoff, steering the team around and kicking 3 conversions.

The Steelers move into fourth position with the win and play the 7th-placed Sharks in the final round next week.

In the upset of the round, the Steelers beat the previously undefeated Raiders 26-10 to keep their slim finals hopes alive with one round to play.

It was a dominant display from the hosts, who led 14-0 at halftime, scoring five tries to the Raider’s two.

To make the finals

To make the finals, they must defeat the Sharks next week and rely on other results to go their way.

The Steelers Women’s Premiership side was out of the gates early with tries to Ana Raduva and Taliah Fuimaono.

Giving the home side a 10-0 lead before the Mounties hit back through a weight of possession with two converted tries to lead 12-10 at half time.

Captain Keeley Davis played an instrumental hand in the Steelers’ first try after the break.

Sending fullback Emma Tonegato into space to claw back the lead.

Davis was at it again shortly after crossing for her four-pointer and sealing the win.

The Steelers move into second spot on the ladder and will take on the sixth-place Sharks next week.

NSWRL Junior Reps run home

NSWRL Junior Reps: Ladder, run home, finals predictions for Harold Matts, SG Ball, Tarsha Gale Cup

With three rounds left of the NSWRL junior reps season, we take a look at the run home of every finals contender, plus make our predictions on who will make the cut in Matts, Ball and Tarsha Gale.

THE race for the NSWRL junior representatives finals is well and truly on with just three rounds remaining.

HAROLD MATTHEWS

Currently there’s a three-way tie at the top of the standings between Canterbury, Parramatta and Canberra, with the trio dropping just one game so far.

HAROLD MATTS LADDER

NSWRL Harold Matthews Cup Rnd 6 Ladder Ladder : OurFootyTeam.com)

A number of huge clashes will feature over the remaining weeks, headlined by the Raiders and Sharks this weekend, before Canberra backs up against Illawarra and Balmain the following fortnight.

The Penrith vs Parramatta fixture in round eight is a cracker, with the Roosters also needing to take down Newcastle to keep their slim hopes alive.

Despite sitting in fourth and a bye this round, the Panthers have to face the top two sides in the last rounds, and need to win at least one of those to qualify for the post-season.

Cronulla should advance if it can win its final two games, while a perfect run home for the Knights has them in the box seat to leapfrog a few sides on the road home.

The Tigers are a big smokey to advance with games against the Rabbitohs and Central Coast, followed up by the Raiders in the final round.

Predicted top six: Parramatta, Canterbury, Newcastle, Canberra, Cronulla, Balmain

SG BALL CUP

Canberra has set the benchmark in the SG Ball so far, winning all six games and looking very impressive in the process.

SG BALL LADDER

There’s no reason to think their momentum will stop anytime soon.

A real logjam between second and fifth sees them separated by a solitary point, with Penrith and Parramatta to unite in round eight. The winner of this match will almost definitely finish in the top two.

Another fixture that will have a key bearing on the make-up of the final six is Newcastle and the Roosters in the same round.

Wests will fancy their chances of going 3-0 over the final rounds, with the Roosters heavily favoured against Melbourne and North Sydney in their run home.

The Bulldogs, Sharks, Warriors and Steelers are praying on upset results to bring down the Roosters, with all teams trailing fifth by three or more points.

Predicted top six: Canberra, Penrith, Wests, Newcastle, Parramatta, Roosters

TARSHA GALE

A two-way tie between the undefeated Roosters Indigenous Academy and Canterbury sets up an interesting final three rounds.

TARSHA GALE LADDER

Both teams have swept through their first five games to rank both one and two in attack and defence.

The pair will be heavily favoured to complete the regular season without loss, although the Roosters Indigenous side will face a heavy test against Newcastle in round eight.

The Knights have a three-point gap to fourth, and look set to lock up that spot with a very favourable run home.

That leaves the final three spots to come down to five teams, all of whom are locked on seven competition points.

A positive for and against leaves the Steelers in the box seat if they can overcome the Bears this weekend.

Canberra’s game against Cronulla this weekend shapes as a must-win for both teams, with the Raiders enjoying the more favourable run home.
