Strong start for junior Sharks

The Matthews Cup Sharks fell behind 12-0 early, while in the SG Ball match to follow again the Sharks stuttered to a 14-0 deficit, before both teams staged impressive comebacks to score round one wins.

In matches played against Penrith at the HE Laybutt Field in Blacktown, the under-17 Matts Cup Sharks would go on to register a dominant 30-16 triumph, while in the SG Ball clash a stirring fightback resulted in a 26-18 victory to the under-19 Cronulla side.

In the Matthews Cup a Sharks kick-off error gifted Penrith field position before they would score first points, their number nine diving over from dummy half.

A second mistake from the young Cronulla team again allowed the Panthers t move into an attacking zone and once more that would capitalize with a try from short range, and after two successful conversions the home team led 12-0 inside the first 10 minutes of the game.

Showing good composure, the Sharks worked their way back into the contest, with a well worked set move seeing centre Kaylan Turner hit a gap before evading the fullback in a 25-metre dash to the try line.

Liam Challenor was on target

Liam Challenor was on target with the conversion attempt and it was 12-6 Panthers.

Encouraged by their opening try the Sharks went back on the attack and managed to level the score courtesy of a determined short-side charge from lock Thomas Stepic and a Challenor conversion from wide out, with the teams going to the half time break locked at 12-points all.

Showing superior fitness and an ability to control the ball, the Sharks began to assert their authority early in the second half, with a Challenor 40-20 putting his team deep on the attack.

A few tackles later the Sharks would reap the benefits of the Challenor kick with a try wide out to winger Brodie Johnson.

Another successful kick at goal putting the Cronulla side up 18-12, before hard running back rower Logan Longbottom crashed over adjacent to the uprights to help his side to a 12-point advantage.

The Panthers would give themselves some hope of a comeback when awarded a dubious try after the referee appeared to miss an obvious knock-on, making the score 24-16 with nine minutes left on the clock.

The Sharks would prove too good, centre Thomas Beattie crossing for the match sealing try after cleverly picking up a chip kick from five eighth Spencer Swann.

It was a solid first-up performance from a Sharks side which had a number of standouts, none better than Challenor at half back.

Longbottom who added energy and physicality off the bench, hooker Tobi Beckett was busy while providing good service and big front rower Jamie Curran led the way up front.

In the SG Ball match

In the SG Ball match it was almost a similar script to the Matthews Cup game which preceded it, the Sharks their own worst enemies in the early exchanges, conceding three tries to trail 14-0 midway through the first half.

They would settle down and work their way into the contest, a Prestyn Laine-Sietu off-load setting winger Bailey Leach up for the Sharks first points.

Callum Grantham converting from the western touchline, with the half time score of 14-6 flattering for what had been a disappointing Sharks team.

However, whatever was discussed during the break certainly had the desired effect, with interchange forward Tipene Thompson scoring, Grantham adding the extras to make it 14-12, before a Penrith try would push their advantage back out to six points.

From that point the Sharks would gain the upper hand, half back Blake Wardrobe scoring a 51st minute try and not long after Leach a second out wide.

Two conversions giving the under-19 Cronulla outfit a six point lead, before a Grantham penalty goal on fulltime secured the win.

The two Sharks junior rep teams play round two matches at Sharks Stadium against the Canberra Raiders next Saturday.

Panthers junior reps results round 1

The Panthers opened their 2025 Junior Reps campaign with all four grades facing Cronulla at HE Laybutt Sporting Complex, Blacktown on Saturday.

The Panthers female sides kicked off the season in style with wins in the Lisa Fiaola Cup and Tarsha Gale Cup, while the Harold Matthews Cup and SG Ball Cup teams showed plenty of positive signs in defeat.

Round 2 of the Junior Reps season will see the female sides face Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, with the male teams tackling the Warriors.

SG Ball Cup

Panthers 18 – 26 Sharks

The Panthers were chased down by the Sharks in a 26-18 season-opening defeat.

The Panthers found themselves on the attack from the outset, and took the early opportunity with both hands.

The Panthers staged a perfect backline play, as fullback Jack Attard found winger Harry Wald with a cut-out pass to open the scoring.

Halfback Cooper Black cut through Cronulla’s defence with a show-and-go in his own half, before putting a chip-and-chase over the Sharks fullback. He came close to completing a stunning try, but a poor bounce forced him to settle for a dropout.

Sustained pressure eventually paid off for the Panthers, as prop Hokafonu Lemoto crashed over and muscled his way to the try line. Jack Attard’s conversion made it a 10-0 lead after 18 minutes.

A kick-off error put the Panthers straight back on the attack, and they continued to convert chances into points.

Hunter Bell scored the Panthers third try, skipping through the Sharks defence with speed and skill on the left edge.

Harry Wald appeared to have scored a spectacular second try when he soared onto Jhett Sydir’s kick out wide, but a cruel knock-on ruling denied him.

It proved a big moment for the Sharks, who moved the ball upfield and scored an important try for a flattering 14-6 scoreline at the break.

The Sharks took another bite out of the Panthers lead early in the second half, their second try narrowing the margin to two points.

Just as the Sharks returned to attacking territory and set their sights on the lead, Panthers centre Tua Patea took a crucial intercept and sprinted 90 metres to the try line.

However the visitors bounced back again, scoring another two tries to hit a 24-18 with 10 minutes remaining.

The Panthers pushed for late points to snatch a result, but it was not to be as a penalty goal sealed the deal for Cronulla.

Panthers 16 – 30 Sharks

A positive start was not enough for the Panthers as they suffered a 30-16 loss to the Sharks in Round 1.

The Panthers got off to a flying start, forcing an error from the kick-off and scoring with their first possession.

Cruz Death darted out of dummy half on the last tackle of a perfectly executed attacking set, and punished the Sharks defence with the opening try.

Halfback Owen Knowles added the conversion for an early 6-0 lead.

After completing their first defensive assignment of the day, the Panthers went back on the attack and scored their second.

The crafty Cruz Death delivered out of dummy half again, as his pinpoint service sent prop Talmage Brown over the stripe. Another Knowles conversion made it a 12-point lead in as many minutes.

The Sharks recovered from their slow start, finishing the first half strongly with back-to-back tries to level the scores at halftime.

Picking up where they left off, the Sharks returned from half-time with enthusiasm.

The visitors capitalised on some sluggish Panthers play, bagging another pair of tries to hit a 24-12 lead.

Leo-Stipe Latu took matters into his own hands to keep the Panthers in the contest, surging through six defenders and scoring a powerful try.

However, the Sharks eventually put the game to bed with a fortunate try in the latter stages.

Panthers 18 – 10 Sharks

The Panthers defied the odds in an unlikely 18-10 comeback victory over Cronulla in Round 1.

Madison Wilson was the difference with a heroic hat-trick in the final 15 minutes, after a trailing Panthers side seemed down and out for much of the second half.

Cronulla dominated and led for much of the second half, before Wilson’s three late tries snatched an unlikely win.

After a cagey start to the match, the Panthers right edge rolled up the sleeves to put their team on the front foot.

When the Sharks made a threatening line break out wide, Panthers centre Samantha Hanrahan crunched Cronulla’s runaway winger over the sideline.

The Panthers took possession, and some crafty second-phase play and ball movement paved the way for second-rower Jennifer Tuilagi to storm to the try line.

The Sharks responded shortly before half-time, locking up the scores at 4-4.

The Panthers had their backs to the wall for much of the second half, with momentum favouring Cronulla comfortably.

Shortly after the break, the Sharks took a 10-4 lead through fullback Kirrawahn Duckett.

The visitors were well placed to finish the job, dominating possession and field position for extended periods.

That was, until Panthers winger Madison Wilson tipped the game on its head.

The Panthers took full advantage of a rare attacking opportunity with 15 minutes to play by spreading the ball wide, where Wilson touched down and reduced the deficit to two points.

After conceding possession from the kick-off, the Panthers were forced to soak up more Sharks pressure.

From a scrum inside their own red zone, the Panthers boldly shifted the ball to the wing.

Wilson took possession, burst outside her opposite number, and dashed 90 metres untouched to snatch the lead.

The Panthers had work to do with 10 minutes remaining, but kept their composure and held Cronulla at arm’s length.

In the final play of the day, the Panthers put the icing on the cake. Fittingly, Madison Wilson completed her hat-trick to seal an outstanding comeback win for the Panthers.

Panthers 26 – 10 Sharks 

The Panthers kicked off the 2025 season in tremendous style, dominating the Sharks in a 26-10 triumph.

A physical performance saw the Panthers come away with a six-tries-to-two victory, with Tia-Jane Golding, Anita Ropati and Kayla Horvat standing out.

The Panthers showed their class early on, as an outstanding cut-out pass by captain Tia-Jane Golding sent winger Kiah Taotofi over for the opening try.

Momentum turned in Cronulla’s favour, but the Panthers impressive last-ditch defence kept the visitors at bay.

Kayla Horvat, Betsey Fifita and Isabella Ferguson led the Panthers out of danger and back up the field, where Kyla Pasene showed her strength to score a big try. Isabella Ferguson added the conversion to put the Panthers ahead 10-0 22 minutes.

The Panthers found themselves back on the attack within minutes, and landed another blow on the stroke of halftime.

Tia-Jane Golding placed a clever kick over the top of the Sharks compressed defensive line, and Violet Hiku pounced to hand the Panthers a 14-0 half-time lead.

The Panthers hit the ground running in the second half, with Anita Ropati scoring a quickfire double to open the floodgates.

The boom centre slammed the ball down from a backline play in the first minute of the half, before scoring the try of the day moments later.

Shifting the football left from a midfield scrum, five-eighth Patricia Heihei unleashed Ropati with a great short pass. Ropati exploded into the backfield and dashed away to make it 22-0.

As the second half unfolded, the Panthers flexed their defensive muscles. The Sharks were shut down by the Panthers physicality on several occasions, with big tackles from Vasaliva Feleti, Violet Hiku and Kyla Pasene.

Cronulla eventually pulled one back through Tahli Weigand, but the Panthers were already out of reach.

Vasaliva Feleti put an exclamation point on the impressive outing, bulldozing through the defence for a barnstorming sixth Panthers try.

Although the Sharks snagged a late consolation try, a crunching tackle by Violet Hiku in the closing stages brought the crowd to its feet and typified a dominant Panthers display.

Panthers junior reps round 7 wrap

The Panthers hosted the Sharks in three grades at St Marys on Saturday.

An injury plagued Lisa Fiaola Panthers side played host to the Sharks at St Marys on Saturday morning, valiant in a 30-14 defeat.

The right edge for the Panthers was on fire with Naioka Tuipulotu and Tyler-Eve Mair putting in great performances, but the Sharks were too strong, winning the game through the middle of the field.

The Panthers got off to a strong start in this contest, when in the fourth minute, Naioka Tuipolotu took it herself to crash over close to the line.

It came off the back of a strong start from the Panthers, forcing a Sharks error and marching into their redzone. Conversion unsuccessful, 4-0.

The Sharks didn’t take long to hit back, plenty of ball movement seeing them break down the Panthers edges multiple times, before Felila Fakalelu crashed over for the Sharks first. Conversion successful, 4-6.

Fakalelu had her second just three minutes later, crashing over from close range despite a valiant effort from the Panthers defence. Conversion successful, 4-12.

Fakalelu nearly had a third, ten minutes later, when she looked to barge over, this time met by Aaliyah Womal and Meekah Viiga who were brave in holding her up over the line.

The Panthers looked to get back into it with some hard running through the middle marching them upfield. They forced an error from the Sharks inside their half and looked to have a chance at scoring, but an error handed the Sharks the ball just two plays later.

Isabella McDonald, who had a strong start for the Sharks, was rewarded with a four-pointer, crashing over from hooker through a loose ruck, extending the lead. Conversion successful, 4-18.

HALF TIME 4-18

The Panthers started the second half in similar fashion to the first, once again going down their right edge, with Tuipolotu this time shifting it along to Tyler-Eve Mair who went through.

She still had the fullback to beat, and turned her inside out to find the line and score a brilliant try. Conversion unsuccessful, 8-18.

Felila Fakalelu wouldn’t be denied of a third, when the Sharks front rower barged over the Panthers defence, securing a powerful hattrick. Conversion unsuccessful, 8-22.

In the 38th minute, The Tuipolotu and Mair connection had the crowd on their feet once again, when a brilliantly run line from Mair saw her into open space off the Tuipolotu cutout.

This time Sharks fullback Milla Caine was able to bring her down, ten metres short of the line.

Fakalelu had a fourth, 5 minutes later when she punched through a gap in the defence, and was impossible to stop. Conversion unsuccessful, 8-26.

Fatafehi-Marie Mahe scored a brilliant try to get the Panthers back into the game, stepping through defenders before hitting clear air and scoring. Conversion successful, 14-26.

In the 51st minute, Sharks crashed over in what looked like a final blow, but it was called back because of a forward pass, giving the Panthers nine minutes to chase the two try deficit.

The Sharks defence held the Panthers out, when they were given a full set of six inside Sharks ten metre line, but couldn’t convert.

A high tackle penalty got the Sharks out of trouble, and they capitalised later their set with Milla Caine putting the icing on the cake. Conversion unsuccessful, 14-30.

Tough day at the office for the Tarsha Gale Panthers, who succumbed to a dominant Sharks side, 48-4 at St Marys stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers defence was tested early, gifting the Sharks a set of six inside their half, following an error and a penalty. Sharks front rower Koreti Leilua looked to barge over, but an amazing defensive effort from Zharia Hukui kept them out.

Just two minutes later another huge defensive effort was required, this time when Sharks halfback Olivia Herman poked her head through the line, just for Panthers fullback Jalice Brown to get under the ball and hold her up.

The pressure didn’t let up, the Panthers unable to get out of their own ten, kicking on last to Tia-Jordyn Vasilovski, who beat two defenders on her return, before finding clear air, running down the touchline to score in the corner. Conversion unsuccessful, 0-4.

Just two minutes later, Vasilovski had a second, pushing up in support from a Takapautolo line break with no defenders to beat, scoring untouched. Conversion successful, 0-10.

The Sharks onslaught continued, Marnie Isemonger finding Koolee Harbour for a line break, going close before Summer Jitoko and Mesha Fretton came up with a try saver.

They didn’t hold out for long after that though, with Koreti Leilua getting over the line from a crash ball just two plays later. Conversion unsuccessful, 0-14.

Two Sharks middles combined in the next set for another try, Faith Vili putting Stephanie Faulkner through with a short ball thirty metres out.

Sophie Faulkner bursting into the clear before getting around Jalice Brown to score. Conversion unsuccessful, 0-18.

Herman put Takapautolo through a gap on the right edge to keep the scoring going, the Sharks backrower exploding into clear air and running over the Panthers fullback to score. Conversion successful, 0-24.

Montana McLean hit back for the Panthers in the 23rd minute, rolling out of a tackle and reaching out to score from close range.

Conversion unsuccessful, 4-24

HALF TIME 4-24

The Panthers defence had to dig deep to start the second half. The Sharks had a full set on their line, coming close on multiple plays but the defence just managed to hold out.

Marnie Isemonger got halfway through but lost it just short of the line to give the Panthers some relief.

Starting just two minutes later, the Panthers but in another big defensive shift, holding out the Sharks who were building pressure with every set.

An error once again got the Panthers out of trouble, after an opening ten minutes to the half which saw them camped in their own end.

The pressure eventually ended with points, Koreti Leilua bursting straight through the middle before finding Vasilovski in support who got to the line. Conversion successful, 4-30.

Stephanie Faulkner bagged her second in similar fashion to the first, going through this time from a drop play off Olivia Herman, and then beating the fullback to score.

Conversion successful, 4-36.

Koreti Leilua continued her dominant performance in the 53rd minute, getting the Sharks to fourty with a huge run from the 30 metre line. She got to the outside of the Panthers fullback and scored, extending an already large Sharks lead. Conversion successful, 4-42.

Arianna Ruwoldt scored a try for the highlights reel to end the game, taking a kick return and burning the Panthers chasers down the sideline, going the full 100. Conversion successful, 4-48.

The Panthers have suffered defeat to the Sharks despite holding a healthy lead at half-time.

Penrith opened the scoring for this one early, Jett Cleary supplying a brilliant grubber kick in behind, which was recovered and athletically put down by Tua Patea. Conversion successful, 6-0.

Cleary had his hands on another try, when he threw it inside for Jack Attard, deceiving the defence with Attard powering over the top of the Sharks fullback to score.

Conversion unsuccessful, 10-0

Jett Clearys kicking game had the Sharks in huge trouble throughout the opening half, with Jack Attard, Tua Patea and Hokafonu Lemoto the other standouts in the opening part of the game.

Jack Attard took a remarkable catch and returned it to break through the Sharks chasers, before tipping on for Cleary who nearly got to the line, but a courageous effort from the Sharks fullback stopped him five metres short.

The Panthers built relentless pressure, with the next ten minutes being spent inside the Sharks half. Points didn’t come but the territory battle was being dominated by Penrith.

Cleary’s kicking game continued to sound alarms for the Sharks back five, a huge bomb in attacking territory spilt by the Sharks fullback gave Penrith a golden opportunity.

They capitalised that set, with Cameron Robertson tipping on to Tua Patea who stepped back inside and beat a defender to score.

Conversion successful, 16-0.

Just before the halftime break Jett Cleary hobbled off the field with an ankle injury, a huge blow to the Panthers who were rolling along off the back of his kicking game.

HALF TIME 16-0

William Herbert and Liam Perram both came up with some huge one on one stops early in the second half, when the Panthers were asked to defend their line following an early error.

It looked like they had battled through two repeat sets to hold the Sharks out, but a Riley Pollard kick was contested by Nikora Williams on the Panthers line landing for Adrian Sandy who scored. Conversion successful, 16-6.

In the very next set, Bryce Sait’s fifth tackle play gave the Sharks another four pointer, when he put a kick in which richocheted off a Panthers defender.

Bryce Sait recovered and found Kurt Montgomery who had an easy 2-on-1 to put Gray over in the corner.

Conversion unsuccessful, 16-10.

The Panthers ruck loosened up and Sharks marched 100 metres yet again to score.

Riley Pollard and Bryce Sait picked them apart before they found Pharell Gray with a cutout ball and a try in the corner, having to beat a handful of Panthers defenders. Conversion successful, 16-16.

Hokafonu Lemoto and Jensen Tuaoi came back onto the field and their impact was immediate, with back to back huge runs that gave the Panthers their first set in Sharks territory of the second half.

A good kick had the Sharks trapped in their corner, but a cheap penalty got them out.

Sharks rolled through the middle of a tired Penrith ruck.

On fifth tackle they went from dummy half looking dangerous but Jensen Tuaoi came up with a huge play at the arm to force the ball out, before making the tackle on the Sharks player who recovered the ball.

Tuaoi came up with another huge play in the next set, darting from hooker to pierce the Sharks line and pick up a cheap 20 metres, Penrith continued to roll along off the back of that.

Tua Patea breaking the left edge apart, before passing to Hotere-Papalii who drew the fullback in before finding Cameron Robertson in support play to score. Conversion successful, 22-16.

The Sharks hit back straight away, a right edge shift going from Sait to Williams and then a 2 on 1 found Whalebone open in the corner. Conversion successful 22-22.

A Bryce Sait kick in the next set gave the Sharks their first lead of the game, Nikora Williams scooping up a favourable bounce to score in the corner with just four minutes left to play. Conversion successful, 22-28.

Raiders junior reps round Six Wrap

The Raiders recorded a win in all three junior rep grades over the weekend, defeating the Panthers in a triple header at Raiders Belconnen.

Harold Matthews Cup

Raiders 34 – 28 Panthers

The Raiders HM Cup side held on to defeat the Panthers 34-28 in a grandstand finish at Raiders Belconnen on Saturday.

The Raiders jumped out to a strong lead, scoring four tries to one and led 24-6 at halftime.

Penrith responded after the break with four tries of their own to eventually level the match heading into the final seven minutes.

Raiders half Troy Cowling looked to attempt a field goal before linking up with his centre Preston Smallwood, who beat two defenders to put Kruger Roache over for the match winner.

SG Ball Cup

Raiders 44 – 4 Panthers

Play by Play

The Raiders SG Ball Cup side bagged their largest win of the season, defeating the Panthers 44-4 in round six.

It was all one-way traffic in the opening 35 minutes, the Raiders piling on four tries to lead 26-nil at the break.

Five-eighth Ethan Alaia was a standout again, as the local junior bagged a pair of tries in the side’s big win.

Canberra fullback Braydon Darmody also had a perfect day with the boot, converting eight from eight goal attempts.

The Raiders will now shift their focus to a tough away trip to Pukekohe, New Zealand to take on the Warriors this Sunday.

Raiders 32 – 8 Panthers

Play by Play

The Raiders TG Cup side also recorded their biggest win of the season, rounding out a great day for the club with a 32-8 victory over the Panthers.

Raiders’ fullback Lara Cosgrove was a standout, crossing for the first three Canberra tries and set-up the side for a big win.

Elise Simpson also crossed for a double, increasing her tally for the season to five tries in just as many games.

Saturday’s big victory keeps the Raiders in touch with the top six, now turning their attention to a tenth-placed Eels side this weekend.

Looking to be the next generation to hit the highs of the current Penrith Panthers, these are the young guns kitting up in Panthers colours in 2024. Check out 25 Panthers junior reps to watch.

It’s a good time to be an up-and-coming rugby league player in Penrith right now.

Three top-flight premierships in a row is a fete that doesn’t come around very often, and no doubt the Panthers will be keen to keep the good times rolling by bolstering their stocks for years to come.

The Panthers have released their pre-Christmas junior rep squad lists for 2024 which are bursting with talents you might’ve heard of, but most who you haven’t yet.

We’ve picked out 25 names across Harold Matthews, Tarsha Gale and SG Ball Cups that we’re excited to see in Panthers colours in 2024.

Kye Raven (SG Ball)

A talented ball-playing lock who notched five tries for the Panthers in the Harold Matthews Cup last season, further awarded the side’s MVP that season.

Playing club footy for Brothers Penrith, Raven also played for the NSWCCC team in 2023.

Cohen Benson (SG Ball)

Moving north after playing with the Riverina Bulls in the 2023 Laurie Daley Cup is young half Benson.

From Wagga Wagga, he’s not the biggest player but he packs a punch with his ability, with terrific passing ability and game management skills.

David Afu (SG Ball)

A devastating centre who has come right up through the Penrith ranks and is entering his second year of SG Ball.

Strength, foot speed and physicality, he’s got it all.

Check out the above video of him in the 2020 Andrew Johns Cup. Now imagine him with three more years of rep footy under his belt.

Harry Wald (SG Ball)

A try-hungry back, Wald has been a regular tryline visitor across the Andrew Johns and Laurie Daley Cups with the Western Rams, as well as Harold Matthews with the Panthers.

Standing taller than most, Wald frequents on the wing but can also play centre or fullback, with blitzing pace and a terrific kicking ability as well.

He picked up a hat-trick in Harold Matthews last year against Parramatta.

Hokafonu Lemoto (SG Ball)

A mobile prop who gets his team moving forward.

Playing club footy with Minchinbury under-17s, he scored twice in the Harold Matthews Cup last year and has rep experience with NSWCCC.

Jack Attard (SG Ball)

A speedy and crafty hooker who has come through the ranks at the Panthers.

Had a solid campaign for St Dominic’s in the Peter Mulholland Cup, as well as at club level with Colyton where he scored nine tries.

Riley Barglik (SG Ball)

A versatile back who makes the move from the Bears to the Panthers.

In his junior rep career he’s been lining up mostly in wing or fullback, but for St Mary’s at club level he operates out of halfback.

One thing that seems to remain a constant though is tries, having crossed for 11 in under-19s this season with St Mary’s.

Tully Howell (SG Ball)

A bit of Preston Campbell about this kid. Not the biggest, but very elusive and agile from either halfback or fullback and possessing a great skill set.

Donning the headgear as well, he’s looked the business for the Western Rams in Andrew Johns and Laurie Daley Cups, so it will be interesting to see if he can thrive in SG Ball footy.

Alexander and Cornelius Pupualii (Harold Matthews)

This is an exciting duo.

The wrecking-ball twin brothers from Western Sydney are a couple to keep an eye on when on the same pitch.

Alexander is a big prop forward who takes some mean hit-ups. Cornelius is damaging from either centre or edge backrow.

Taj Jelacic (Harold Matthews)

Playing his club footy out of Emu Plains, the halfback crossed for a league-high 12 tries this season.

He lines up for the Panthers in Harold Matthews alongside club teammate and five-eighth Asa Visesio, so it will be interesting to see if this is the halves combo.

Carter Saua (Harold Matthews)

A damaging outside edge player, whether it be in the backrow or from centre.

Scored six tries for St Marys under-16s this season including one in the grand final.

He’s also represented Hills Sports High in the Peter Mullholland Cup, notably scoring five tries in a friendly match back in 2022 against Farrer.

Charbel Kheirallah (Harold Matthews)

25 Penrith Panthers junior reps to watch in 2024.

Returning for his second stint of Harold Matthews Cup footy is Kheirallah.

Last season he made most of his appearances off the bench, managing to cross for three tries still, but no doubt he’ll be looking to nail down a starting role in the front row.

He was a City under-16s representative in 2023.

Heinz Lemoto (Harold Matthews)

A very talented young second rower who made a name for himself when he was selected and scored a hat-trick in the City under-16s representative side earlier this year.

This is his second year of Harold Matthews Cup footy and the Minchinbury junior should play a pivotal role in the starting line-up this season.

Marcellus Iakopo (Harold Matthews)

Another returning for a second year of Harold Matthews Cup footy after finding the line twice in his debut season.

At club level for St Clair under-16s, the centre crossed for nine tries this season and was a grand final winner.

Has a rugby background as well, having represented the NSW Waratahs in the under-16s.

Nathanial Tolu (Harold Matthews)

Will be looking to hold down the hooker role in his second year of Harold Matthews Cup footy.

Has a rugby union background, having represented NSW Samoa at the 2022 Pacifica Youth Rugby Cup.

On the league path, he’s playing club footy for Cambridge Park where he scored six tries this season.

Roman Tuaimau (Harold Matthews)

Grew up playing soccer but eventually grew into a footy body where his future definitely lies.

The Patrician Brothers College gun made the Australian Schoolboys under-15 team in 2022 off the back of his NSWCCC performances.

Playing his club footy for Minchinbury, he’s a real handful from the second row.

Bethany To’o (Tarsha Gale)

Moving up the ranks to Tarsha Gale is the younger sister of NRL superstar winger Brian To’o.

With the try scoring prowess of her brother, she blitzed the Lisa Fiaola Cup last season with four tries in the opening match, earning her City under-17 honours.

Danielle Manuel (Tarsha Gale)

Has been playing her club footy for St Clair at hooker this year, but formerly played in the outside backs.

She found the tryline four times this season for club.

Julie Notise (Tarsha Gale)

The rampaging centre was the top try scorer in the Penrith under-17 girls this year with a massive 22 for St Marys. Incredibly, this was her first season of footy.

She scored two in a victorious grand final and will look to carry her try threat into Tarsha Gale this year.

Ellyssa Myers (Tarsha Gale)

Moving up through the ranks from Lisa Fiaola to Tarsha Gale is young Myers.

Playing in fullback or in the halves, she crossed for four tries this season for Emu Plains and is valuable on the pitch with her kicking game and good footy brain.

Micayla Bourne (Tarsha Gale)

A talented backrower / lock forward who had a terrific season for Minchinbury under-17s this season, in her first year back in the game for four years due to tennis commitments.

Crossing for six tries for her club, she’s rising the ranks from Lisa Fiaola in 2023 to a Tarsha Gale berth next year.

Shelbi Szabo (Tarsha Gale)

A major threat for Minchinbury this season, crossing for 10 tries from hooker.

Not the biggest player ever, but Szabo doesn’t shy away from big challenges. She’s smart with the ball, both in finding opportunities for herself and creating for her teammates.

Lakishar Whata-Fepuleai (Tarsha Gale)

Speaking of try threats, this gun utility forward notched 13 tries for Minchinbury under-17s this season, a team-high.

A quiet achiever, she can do the damage from the backrow or from prop, no doubt set to make an impact in Panthers colours in Tarsha Gale.

Mackenzie Doust (Tarsha Gale)

Returning for her second season of Tarsha Gale is centre Doust, hoping to add to her one try from last season.

Her athletics background means she can play and compete anywhere across the backline.

Panthers Junior Reps Round 5 wrap

The Panthers’ Harold Mathews and Tarsha Gale sides recorded impressive wins in Round 5, however the SG Ball team suffered their first loss of the season.

Tarsha Gale Panthers outplay Wests TigersNSWRL

Penrith Panthers have claimed their second victory of the Tarsha Gale Cup season, beating the Wests Tigers 22-10 in a nailbiter at BlueBet Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers went close to scoring twice in the opening quarter hour, however they were denied both times due to Tigers players stripping the ball.

Panthers captain Yasmine Baker came up with a trysaver of her own in the 7th minute, producing a perfect cover tackle as the Tigers raced down the sideline.

The Panthers continued to attack

The Panthers continued to attack, with back-to-back sets on the Tigers line finally resulting in a try to Taya Lazare after a kick was dabbed behind the defence.

Five minutes later they were in again as Jemimah Tagaloamatua produced an offload to send Baker in out wide. Jaida Staben landed the difficult conversion to make the score 10-0.

An error by the Tigers gave the Panthers a perfect opportunity to score in the dying seconds of the first half, with Tagaloamatua crashing over out wide. Staben added the extras after the siren to take a 16-0 lead to half time.

The Panthers got off to a bad start to the second half, making an error with their first use of the ball to give the Tigers attacking field position.

From the next set, Taytana Pati Ah-Cheung sliced through to reduce the margin to 16-6.

The Tigers scored again in the 40th minute when Imogen Lowe buried her way over the line out wide.

The conversion attempt by Imogen Hope hit the upright, leaving the Panthers a converted try ahead.

They looked like adding a third try five minutes later, only for Mackenzie Doust to come up with a trysaver out wide.

Repeated mistakes gave the Tigers more chances to draw level, however the Penrith defence turned them away at every attempt.

The Panthers were finally able to put some pressure of their own on, with Bella McEachern scoring the match-sealer with two minutes to play.

Staben added the goal to take the final margin to 22-10.

Harold Matthews Panthers thump Magpies to enter top four

The Panthers were clinical in both defence and attack as they beat the Western Suburbs Magpies 22-4 to cement a position in the top four.

There was not much to split the two teams, however the Panthers were better able to ice their opportunities and shut down the Magpies attack through good line speed and physicality in defence.

Lock Kye Raven was instrumental in the victory, his tough running game complimented nicely by his silky passing ability.

Centre Casey Mclean was explosive with the ball, often bending the defensive line with his runs to give the Panthers momentum in attack.

The home team opened the scoring in the 5th minute when a beautiful offload from second rower Heinz Lemoto allowed Jack Attard to dive over untouched.

Conversion successful, 6-0.

In the 6th minute, fullback Jaxen Edgar continued his fine form this season when he executed a beautiful in and away move to get past his man and put centre Cameron Bamblett over in the corner.

Conversion slightly wayward, 10-0.

The Magpies replied to the early onslaught with a good left side shift in the 9th minute.

Centre Heamasi Makasini found some space and fended off a defender to score the away team’s first try of the morning. Conversion unsuccessful, 10-4

HALF TIME: 10-4

The Panthers extended their lead in the 38th minute when the ball went through the hands to Jacob Kelly, who sprinted down the left wing for 40 metres before turning it back inside to Casey Mclean.

Kelly then added the extras with a beautiful sideline conversion, 16-4.

In the 41st minute, lock Kye Raven used his strength and power to steamroll the defensive line, dragging multiple defenders with him in an incredible solo effort to score underneath the posts.

Conversion successful, 22-4.

The game would develop into a tense arm wrestle, with both teams having chances to put points on the board but neither able finish off the job thanks to some outstanding defensive efforts.

The Panthers held a comfortable lead for the rest of the game, with the boost in point differential seeing them enter the top four for the first time this season.

FULL TIME: 22-4

SG Ball Panthers suffer first loss in tight match

The Panthers went down to the Western Suburbs Magpies 26-22, the match was a seesawing affair until a late try stole it for the away team.

The loss means the Panthers drop down the ladder but remain in the top eight thanks to their unbeaten start to the season.

The Magpies opened the scoring when Jordan Miller steamed onto the ball in the 3rd minute, the barnstorming prop using his size to crash over for the first try of the game.

Conversion by Zakauri Clarke successful, 0-6.

The away team extended their lead in the 7th minute when Lachlan Galvin stepped off his right foot and sliced through the line to score.

Conversion successful, 0-12.

The Panthers would then hit back in the 22nd minute when Tana Papu thundered onto a short ball and barged his way over to put the ball down on the white line.

Conversion successful, 6-12.

In the 30th minute, Luke Hanson showcased his creative flair, providing a sublime ball to Hudson Brown who ran 10 metres and scored the try without a hand laid on him.

Although the conversion was unsuccessful, the Panthers would go into the sheds with all the momentum.

HALF TIME: 10-12

The home team would hit the front for the first time in the 43rd minute when Wilson De Courcey showed outstanding pace to sprint around the Magpies defence and down the righthand wing.

He ran for 40 metres before executing a perfectly weighted chip kick back infield which Riley Pollard pounced on to score under the posts.

Conversion successful, 16-12.

The away team would fire back in the 48th minute when fullback Heath Mason burst down the wing and beat a couple of tired defenders to score the Magpies third try of the afternoon.

Sideline conversion unsuccessful, 16-16.

In the 53rd minute, centre William Craig broke the line and ran 40 metres before beating the fullback.

But a fantastic cover tackle by Billy Phillips stopped what looked to be a certain try.

Two plays later, the Magpies took advantage of the scattered defensive line, shifting the ball all the way to the right to allow Zakauri Clarke to score in the corner.

Conversion unsuccessful, 16-20.

In the 62nd minute, Jenson Tuaoi showed great deception from dummy half to give Luron Patea a slight opening.

The prop turned a half chance into four points, burrowing under the defence to put the Panthers back in front. Conversion successful, 22-20.

Unable to hold on to their lead, the Magpies would hit the front for a final time in the 66th minute when their hooker scooted out from dummy half and muscled his way over the line. Conversion successful, 22-26.

Despite suffering their first defeat, the SG Ball Panthers remain near the top of the ladder because of their fantastic start to the season.

FULL TIME: 22-26

A MASSIVE round of junior reps action saw competition leaders stamp their authority, unbeaten streaks ended and some upset results as well.

Take a look at what made headlines from a massive round four of the NSWRL junior reps season.

BALMAIN FINDING ITS FEET

The Tigers have won their past two and have put themselves into finals contention in SG Ball.

The manner they’ve gone about it would impress officials the most, hanging in games and winning them at the death.

They were there to be beaten even after they scored the final try, but held solid in some good signs for the road ahead.

NOT PANIC STATIONS FOR THE BULLDOGS… YET

Canterbury has now dropped its past two SG Ball Cup games, but a strong for and against has them still sitting in seventh.

Their next two games are must win however, because their run home is among the toughest in the comp.

In their last three weeks they will face Wests, the Warriors and Penrith, all on the road.

ROOSTERS, STEELERS GAME OF THE YEAR?

The SG Ball clash between the Roosters and Steelers had just about everything.

Stunning tries, big leads, bigger comebacks and a late finish that sent both teams home with a point.

The two played out the first draw for the season, and while it will dent their finals hopes, it was spectacular viewing for the netural.

KNIGHTS PUT SOUTHS TO THE SWORD

Newcastle tuned up for their blockbuster against the Warriors with a dominant win over South Sydney.

They’ve been clinical in their two home games so far this year to set up the second best for and against in the competition, keeping them in fourth spot.

What was most impressive was how quickly they were able to put the game away.

WARRIORS FIND LATE TO REMAIN UNBEATEN

New Zealand had to dig deep on their home soil against a winless and desperate Dragons side, but they did just that.

Trailing by two inside the final 10 minutes, their centres proved too much for St George to handle, with Patrick Moimoi and Sialetili Faeamani getting across the stripe.

They remain deep in the finals hunt and still have a game in hand.

COMEBACK OF THE YEAR?

South Sydney looked destined for their third-straight defeat to start the Harold Matthews season trailing 22-6 at halftime.

Whatever was said in the sheds from coach Luke Deller worked wonders.

They scored three tries in the space of 16 minutes after the break, including what would prove to be the matchwinner from captain Daniel Lua, to get on the board in season 2023.

SHARKS REDISCOVER THEIR BITE

After a tough outing against the Roosters last week, they got their revenge on the Central Coast variety.

Cronulla was in full control from the outset in a seven-try effort that keeps them in a lofty ladder spot.

Xavier Singh scored a hat-trick and provided some incredible acrobatics in the process out on his wing.

STEELERS KEEP SEASON ALIVE IN DRAMATIC FASHION

It was a wild day at Morry Breen Oval on the Central Coast with three incredible games, perhaps the Harold Matts clash provided the most drama.

Illawarra was cruising at 20-6 with less than 10 minutes remaining and an extra player on the field due to a sin bin.

Two late Roosters tries kept them on their toes however to set up a grandstand finish, which would ultimately be secured with Tom Kirk.

BULLDOGS UNLEASH ON BEARS

Canterbury wasn’t in a charitable mood coming off the back of their maiden Harold Matts loss of the season.

Five first half tries against the Bears put the game out of reach very early of the visitors at Belmore Oval.

It’s that clinical nature that has them sitting in second and a definite hope of higher honours in the U17s comp.

STEELERS GIVE ROOSTERS A REAL FIGHT

For the first time in 2023 the Roosters Indigenous Academy faced a stern test in the Tarsha Gale Cup.

Illawarra led with less than 15 minutes to go in the contest, keeping their opponents scoreless in the process.

The class of the Roosters shone through however, with two late tries taking their record to a perfect 4-0, with both the best attack and defence in the competition.

DRAGONS GET REWARD FOR EFFORT

No team deserved their first win more than the St George Dragons Tarsha Gale side.

They were beaten at the death in round two and had to settle for a draw last week.

The Dragons opened up a big lead against Cronulla and despite some nervous moments, held their nerve to get the two points they both needed and had earned.

PANTHERS TURN THE CORNER WITH GUTSY DEFENCE

The 34-16 scoreline suggests Penrith eased past Manly to record their first Tarsha Gale Cup win of the season.

It couldn’t be any further from the truth. The Panthers earned their attacking stripes the hard way in a chaotic six minutes before the break.

Up by six, first the Penrith girls held-up wrecking ball Monica Fasavalu-Fa’amausili, then did the same to Wanita Leatherby, before try-bound prop Tafao Asaua was forced into error.

Set to face the struggling Tigers next week, Penrith are one to watch.

RAIDERS SEND A CLEAR MESSAGE

After three weeks on the road, the Raiders returned home with a bang.

Victories against the formidable Magpies in the Matts and SG Ball leave both outfits undefeated at the top of the table.

MATTS DRAGONS CAN’T TAKE A TRICK

The Harold Matts Dragons can’t take a trick. Stuck in 14th after four straight defeats, they’ve proven they can match it with the best in the competition.

In round three they were level with a strong Penrith at half-time, and on the weekend against Parramatta they went to the sheds at 12-all.

From there it quickly unravelled. Omar Dennaoui spent time in the sin bin, and by the time the centre returned Parra had shot clear 24-12.

HAROLD MATTS CONGESTED AT THE TOP

Wests headed to Canberra as frontrunners, now with one loss against their name they’ve slipped down to fourth spot.

Sitting alongside five other sides with three wins and a loss, they’re in good company as the battle for top spots heats up.

ANOTHER TOP OF THE TABLE CLASH FOR BELCONNEN

The big games continue at Belconnen in the SG Ball.

After knocking off the previously undefeated Magpies, Canberra are back on home turf in round four in another top of the table clash, this time against the unbeaten Parramatta Eels.

CLASSY PANTHERS DEFY THE ODDS

Down 20-6 in the second half at Brookvale, Penrith’s unbeaten start to the SG Ball season was on the rocks.

They eventually defied the odds storming home to win 30-20, but it was the brilliance of No.7 Luke Hanson and winger Nick Murphy that saw them turn the corner.

In a short side raid, Hanson sliced through with a show-and-go before Murphy who did the rest. A silky in-and-away left the fullback stranded, and his classy four-pointer put Penrith on the road to recovery.

YOUNG EELS WINGER DINING OUT

Lorima Rokosuka picked up a double in the Eels’ Harold Matts win over the Dragons, making it three straight weeks where the winger has crossed the stripe.

Just as capable on the left or right edge, the youngster is fast making a name for himself as a quality finisher.

TARSHA RAIDERS HAVE PLENTY OF STRIKE

In round three Georgia Willey lit up Brookvale with two tries to help open the Raiders’ season account.

The Australian Schoolgirls fullback repeated the feat against the Tigers, but was topped on the score sheet by centre Lara Cosgrove who shredded Wests’ defence on the way to scoring an impressive hat-trick.

BEARS NOT FAR OFF THE PACE

Despite sitting in eighth spot on the Tarsha Gale ladder with a draw and two losses, North Sydney’s first win can’t be far away.

If defence wins matches, then the Bears are on the right track. They’ve only conceded 46-points, the fourth least in the competition.

AS we approach the midway point of the NSWRL junior reps season, round four has seen some big movers and shakers across all competitions.

Catch up on all the action so far from a huge weekend of rugby league:

TIGERS CAUSE BOILOVER AT BELMORE

LATE brilliance from co-captain Josh Feledy has lifted the Balmain Tigers to an upset 20-16 win over Canterbury at Belmore Oval in the SG Ball Cup.

With scores tied at 16-all and under seven minutes left of play, a magical flick pass from the centre to his outside man William Malloy saw him cross in the corner to wrestle back the lead.

It wasn’t game over though, with a regathered short kick-off giving the Bulldogs a golden opportunity to snatch victory late in the piece.

But it was to be Balmain’s day, holding solid when it counted to give them consecutive wins after starting the year 0-2.

Feledy praised the way his forwards were able to match it with their Canterbury counterparts, and how they’ve been able to turn their season around.

“They’re a big pack the Bulldogs and we stuck in there right until the last minute and got away with the win,” Feledy said.

“We always spoke during the pre-season that we only played one trial game, and we wanted to build throughout the season itself.

Now we’ve got two wins on the trot

“Now we’ve got two wins on the trot. That’s a great win for us boys and we’ll take that into next week.”

Feledy is one of the young talents of this Tigers side, and looks set to graduate up to Jersey Flegg level at the conclusion of the U19s year.

“I’ve been a bit slow the first couple of games but picked it up today,” he said.

“I’m really focusing on what I need to do for the team and not really as an individual.

“Definitely hoping to move up to Flegg and then see what happens at the end of the year. But I’m just loving my footy here at the moment.”

In what was a game of changing fortunes, the Tigers struck inside the opening two minutes and opened up a 10-point lead midway through the first half when Feledy touched down in the 18th minute.

The Bulldogs struck back however, scoring the next two and hitting the front with 23 minutes left to play.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom for Canterbury on their home turf however, with their Harold Matthews Cup side scoring a big 44-8 win over North Sydney.

The Bulldogs raced the clock throughout the first half and opened up a commanding 28-4 advantage through the opening 30 minutes.

Halfback Mitchell Woods was strong again, posting two tries and a personal tally of 20 points.

PANTHERS RUN HOT WINNING ALL THREE AT BROOKVALE

An outstanding first half defensive effort paved the way for Penrith to outclass Manly 34-16 in an entertaining Tarsha Gale clash.

Chasing their first win of the season, Penrith overcame a massive Manly middle on the way to a comprehensive seven tries to three victory.

Returning after missing last week, towering Sea Eagles prop Tafao Asaua threatened to dominate from the get-go, barging over for her third try in as many starts to open a 6-4 advantage.

After regaining the lead at 10-4, Penrith then withstood raid after Manly raid, holding the ball over the line on three separate occasions in a challenging six-minute workout.

The reward came on the stroke of halftime, when a Montana McLean bust was finished off by five-eighth Taya Lazare.

Trailing 14-6, Manly made a hash of the second half restart allowing Penrith’s exciting speedsters to spring into action. Centre Bella McEachern scored the first of four Penrith second half tries that included a double to Piper Spackman.

In the Harold Matts, the young Panthers were never headed in winning their third straight game, a 24-18 win over Manly.

The Sea Eagles scored first through centre George Mapuilesua, but with five of the next six tries including a double to Cameron Bamblett, Penrith jumped clear 24-10 with 15 minutes still to play.

The home side rallied, and a couple of consolation tries saw them finish within six-points at the final siren.

Penrith extended their unbeaten run to four games

In the SG Ball, Penrith extended their unbeaten run to four games, but it was anything but one-way traffic against a committed Sea Eagles.

The 30-20 win sees Penrith jump to third on the ladder. For the winless Sea Eagles it was a case of what might have been.

Manly fired out of the blocks with a blistering three-try opening to lead 14-0.

And another to hooker Jake Fulton saw them head to the sheds up 20-6 an in total command.

The change of ends sparked the Panthers, prop Luron Patea finishing with two tries as the Penrith boys stormed to victory with five unanswered second-half tries.

RAIDERS’ GOLDEN HOMECOMING

In a battle of the unbeaten Harold Matts heavyweights, Canberra jumped to top spot on the table after clipping the Magpies’ wings 28-14.

On home turf for the first time this season, Raiders centre Harry Hudson had the locals cheering with the opening try in just the third minute.

Wests’ reply was swift, and the reigning premiers led 10-6 after 15 minutes following back-to-back tries to winger Ali Hicham Karnib and skipper Luke Laulili’i.

From there, it was all Canberra. After wrestling back the ascendancy, the Raiders then went on a points blitz of their own, scoring four unanswered tries either side of the interval to open an unassailable 28-10 lead.

In another clash of two undefeated frontrunners, the SG Ball Raiders flexed their muscles with a comprehensive 40-12 demolition of the highly touted Wests Magpies.

Classy backrower Jaxon Lavender had a day to remember, he crossed twice on a day that saw playmaker Keahn Skipps finish with a personal 16-point haul.

In a fiery ending, with five minutes remaining and down 30-12, Wests lost Zakauri Clarke and Tallyn Da Silva to the sin bin.

With a two-man advantage, Canberra rubbed more salt into the Magpies’ wounds closing out the afternoon with a further two tries.

In a one sided Tarsha Gale clash, Canberra swept aside the Wests Tigers 44-4 in a Belconnen masterclass.

On what proved to be a magic day for the Green Machine’s speedsters, Lara Cosgrove crossed in the first half as the home side jumped to a 10-0 lead.

In an eight tries to one rampage, Cosgrove notched a well deserved hat-trick in the final minute of the match, while star fullback Georgia Willey crossed for a double of her own in Canberra’s second straight win.

For the Tigers, the loss rounded out a tough fortnight where they’ve conceded 70-points and scored only one try.

RABBITOHS COMEBACK HIGHLIGHTS MIXED DAY

The Rabbitohs produced one of the comebacks of the junior reps season to knock off Newcastle at Kurri Kurri.

Trailing 22-6 at halftime, South Sydney hit back with three unanswered tries to pick up their first win of the Harold Matthews season 24-22.

Their three tries came in a 12-minute span in the second half, with captain Daniel Lua’s 46th minute touchdown proving the difference.

They couldn’t replicate the feat in the SG Ball Cup however, with the Knights running out 42-4 winners.

Back-to-back tries to Jayden Harris and Elijah Salesa Ieaumoana gave them a 14-0 lead at the break that the visitors were unable to overcome.

Ethan Ferguson brought up his double, before Jayden Harris came off the bench and scored a hat-trick to cap off the big win.

Newcastle maintained pace with the top Tarsha Gale Cup teams after downing Souths 22-6.

Yilara Widders struck first for the Rabbitohs after just three minutes, but that is where the joy would end, as the Knights struck twice on both sides of halftime to keep their good form in 2023.

EELS’ KELLYVILLE HAT-TRICK

The junior Eels had a day out at Kellyville, finishing in front in all three grades.

The Tarsha Gale girls kicked off the day with a hard-fought 16-6 win over the North Sydney Bears.

With both sides coming off a last start draw, it was no surprise to see the scores locked at six apiece just minutes before the break.

Bears centre Grace-Lee Weekes crossed to level the scores in the 21st minute, following an early try to Eels backrower Kalisi Mahe.

But it was Parra’s super-sub Nella Lima who proved the hero, planting the ball over the line just before the interval to open a handy six-point buffer.

North Sydney had a golden chance to counter after the break, but with Eels centre Caitlin Peadon in the sin bin they came away empty-handed.

Siulolovao Vave officially shut the door on a Bears comeback, the winger’s late try enough to round out Parra’s second victory of the season.

In the Matts, Parramatta had to wait until after halftime before overcoming a depleted Dragons 36-12.

The winless Saints ran in three unconverted tries

The winless Saints ran in three unconverted tries to match Parra 12-all in an enthralling opening stanza.

But their hopes began to unravel two minutes after halftime with the dismissal of Omar Dennaoui to the sin bin.

During the centre’s absence, Parra try sneak Lorima Rokosuka bagged a double as the Eels shot clear 24-12. Another two tries saw the Eels ice an emphatic third straight win.

Parramatta have extended their unbeaten run in the SG Ball competition to four after they comfortably accounted for the Bears 44-12.

Hooker Matthew Arthur and fullback Te Hurinui Twidle crossed early for the blue-and-gold’s before Norths levelled at 12-all following tries to Malakye Enasio and Emmet Nicholls.

The second half was all Parra. Te Hurinui Twidle added another two tries as the relentless Eels piled on another six.

Arthur grabbed a double, while with six conversions and a try, five-eighth Ethan Sanders finished with 16-points as the Eels jumped to second place on the ladder.

ROOSTERS, STEELERS SHARE SPOILS

The Steelers gave the Roosters Indigenous Academy their toughest test to date in the Tarsha Gale Cup, but ultimately it wasn’t enough, going down 12-6 on the Central Coast.

Mia-Rose Walsh gave the visitors the perfect start with a try in the second minute in a low-scoring first half.

The Roosters finally cracked it in the 48th minute through Eliza Lopamaua, before Skyla Adams sealed the result with seven minutes to play.

Illawarra was able to hit back in the Harold Matthews however, fending off a late Roosters charge to prevail 24-18.

The Steelers looked to be in cruise control with 10 minutes to play, leading by 14 points and with the Roosters reduced to 12 men with Brandon Beetson sent to the sin bin.

Toby Rodwell and Zach Fittler had other ideas, helping them back to 20-18 inside the final four minutes, before Steelers fullback Tom Kirk extinguished the comeback.

In one of the games of the season, the SG Ball sides couldn’t be split, with the Roosters and Steelers tied at 24-all.

The home side struck first and opened up a big 18-0 lead after 40 minutes, before three tries in nine minutes had Illawarra back on level pegging.

Ethan Roberts gave the Roosters the lead once again, but it was Jett Liu who spoiled the party and salvaged a point with six minutes remaining.

CRONULLA HITS BACK HARD

Cronulla is back on track in the Harold Matthews Cup following a surging 36-6 defeat of the Central Coast Roosters at home.

The writing was on the wall with Kaden Gardner scoring inside a minute, and the Sharks taking a comfortable 16-0 lead at the break.

That was extended further after halftime, and when winger Xavier Singh brought up his hat-trick, the result was safely in their keeping.

The Panthers had a successful afternoon in the Junior Reps, claiming two wins and a draw at Mascot Oval.

SG Ball Panthers make it three from three

A late flurry of tries has seen the Penrith Panthers claim their third-straight win to open the SG Ball season, thrashing St George 38-12 on a hot Saturday afternoon at Mascot Oval.

The game was in the balance with Penrith leading 14-12 15 minutes before full time, before they piled on four late tries to claim the comprehensive victory.

The Panthers put themselves under a lot of pressure early, conceding multiple penalties to put St George on the attack.

The Dragons took full advantage of the field position, scoring next to the posts in the 5th minute through Loko Pasifiki Tonga to take a 6-0 lead.

It took the Panthers until midway through the first half before they had a decent chance to attack, but they were quick to capitalise when Luke Hanson set up Hudson Brown with a good short ball.

Riley Pollard converted from out wide to bring the scores to 6-all.

With momentum on their side, the Panthers began to look better in attack, with only desperate Dragons defence stopping Jenson Tuaoi from scoring late in the half.

A penalty on the siren saw Pollard add an extra two points to give the Panthers an 8-6 lead at the break.

Another deft short ball put Poutua Hotere-Papalii into space, before he found Tuaoi to score under the posts to extend the margin beyond a converted try.

The eight-point lead was short-lived though, with an error off the kick off giving St George perfect field position.

Shadi Hammoud outleapt the defence from a kick to cut the margin back to 14-12.

Fullback Jaxen Edgar was everywhere in the Panthers victory, while barnstorming props Charbel Kheirallah and Hokafonu Lemoto ensured the Dragons defence was always on the backfoot.

A number of offside penalties by both teams meant the match started as an end-to-end affair.

Finally, in the 11th minute, the Panthers broke the deadlock as Casey Mclean ran a beautiful outside-inside line.

Beating numerous tackles to sprint 25 metres and score the first points of the match. Conversion by Jacob Kelly successful, 0-6.

Jaxen Edgar continued his strong form and extended the lead in the 16th minute, when he dummied to his outside men and stepped off his right foot to break the line and score his fourth try of the season.

Conversion unsuccessful, 0-10.

The Dragons hit back in the 20th minute, when a nice offload allowed Risiate Smythe to muscle his way over under the posts. Conversion successful, 6-10.

When the home team put on an attacking move off a scrum and winger Ralph Binge dove over in the right corner. Conversion unsuccessful, 10-10.

Strong defence by the Panthers denied an attacking barrage in the final seconds of the first half, meaning the two teams went into the sheds all locked up.

The Panthers took little time to extend their lead as a late offload allowed Jack Attard to streak away, showing excellent acceleration to burn the Dragons defence in the 42nd minute.

Conversion successful, 14-22.

The Panthers capitalised on more good field position with a sweeping right-side shift.

The ball went through almost every pair of hands in the backline before Marcellus Iakopo dove over to score his team’s fifth try of the day.

Beautiful conversion by Jacob Kelly to seal the game, 28-14 with three minutes to play.

The Dragons would go on to score a consolation try as the hooter sounded, but it wouldn’t be enough to affect the outcome, Panthers with their second victory in three games.

The Penrith Panthers have and St George Dragons have played out a nail-biting 14-all draw on a hot Saturday afternoon at Mascot Oval.

The Panthers got off to a strong start, dominating the opening ten minutes of the match, but strong St George defence prevented them from scoring.

The good start was undone four minutes after when a penalty gave St George an opportunity to score out wide through Saja Refei.

The Panthers put themselves under more pressure shortly after as errors began to creep into their game, however their defence was strong enough to prevent the Dragons scoring again.

A Dragons error gave the Panthers a chance to go on the attack and they capitalised when Montana McLean saw space behind the markers and raced through to score.

Jaida Staben converted the difficult kick to take the lead 6-4.

They turned it into a double blow a set later when Yasmine Baker sliced through to score, giving the Panthers a 10-4 lead at half time.

The Panthers immediately put themselves under pressure to start the second half, making a mistake from the kick off.

The Dragons made them pay, with Mele Ketuu crossing out wide to cut the deficit to two.

Under pressure, Montana Clifford took it upon herself to inspire the Panthers with a huge hit to force an error.

McLean was next to come up with a big play, earning a fifth-tackle penalty with a great run from dummy-half.

A shift in the ensuing set saw Bella McEacherm score out wide to push the lead back to a converted try.

An error off a kick again forced the Panthers to defend their own line, however they were unable to stop Taneisha Gray from close range.

Saja Refei converted to bring the scores level at 14-all with seven minutes remaining.

Both teams had chances to score in the dying minutes, however desperate goal line defence ensured the points would be shared.

Panthers launches historic Women’s Competition

Penrith Panthers and Panthers Juniors are proud to announce the launch of the Panthers Rugby League Women’s (PRLW) competition ahead of the 2023 season.

This historic new under-20s competition will provide local female players (aged 18, 19 and 20 in 2023) the opportunity to participate in a competitive program before progressing to open-aged and professional competitions.

Aligned with the club’s built-from-within philosophy, Panthers will develop local talent to provide female players with a pathway into the club’s proposed inclusion in the NRLW competition.

The first-of-its-kind competition, coordinated by Panthers Pathways in conjunction with Panthers Juniors, will run parallel to the junior rugby league competition – from April to August.

PRLW will comprise of 15 rounds and finals, with matches to be played on weekends in the Penrith district.

Prior to the commencement of the season, all players will train for an eight-week block. At the conclusion of the training period, teams will be formed to create an equal and competitive competition.

Players will compete in a Panthers-inspired jersey, with each team playing in a different colour variation.

All players will receive Panthers training and playing apparel, and have the opportunity to be involved in the Panthers Pathways system – which includes training, wellbeing and education.

“The launch of the Panthers Rugby League Women’s competition is an exciting step for the female pathways program at the club,” Panthers Rugby League CEO Matt Cameron said.

“This new historic competition demonstrates the belief in where the club is headed within the women’s game.

“With a build-from-within model, Panthers will develop local talent to make the club well prepared and competitive for the future inclusion in the NRLW competition.”

Registrations open on 1 December 2022. Participants will need to complete the PRLW Player Information Cognito Form, as well as register through player’s junior league club.
