Keebra Park win National Schoolboys title

Keebra Park High School is celebrating its first National Schoolboys Cup since 2017 after fullback David Bryenton steered the side to a gripping victory in Thursday’s final.

The visitors ran in four tries to two to hold off a fast-finishing Patrician Brothers Blacktown and secure a 20-12 win at Leichhardt Oval.

Patrician Brothers were buoyed by a vocal supporter base, but Keebra Park’s outstanding backs silenced the crowd early and they didn’t look back. The visitors kept their noses in front throughout the remainder of the contest.

The NSW champions battled valiantly, but their comeback effort finished short and they suffered a second-straight defeat in the National Schoolboys Cup final.

Keebra Park coach Peter Norman was thrilled with the composure his side showed late and said Thursday’s win was six years in the making.

“We had a large chunk of this group since year seven,” Norman told NRL.com. “To see their growth over the last six years to where they are now is incredible. A lot of them are actually in year 11, so it’s five years of growth.

“We’ve had some tough lessons where we’ve lost games like this and semi-finals but their work ethic and attitude got them this result.

Words can’t describe how proud I am.”

Bryenton was superb throughout the contest, claiming both the player of the match award and the Peter Sterling Medal for schoolboy player of the year.

In doing so, he joined the likes of Ben Te’o, Payne Haas and David Fifita as Keebra Park students to win the medal.

The Year 12 student only joined the school three years ago when he relocated from East Auckland to Australia to pursue his rugby league ambitions.

Bryenton is contracted to the Bulldogs and will move to Sydney at the end of the year to take the next step in his NRL dream.

On Thursday, however, his only focus was on leading Keebra Park to a breakthrough National Schoolboys Cup title in the competition’s 50th year.

“I wanted to come over to Australia for an opportunity,” Bryenton said. “I was having a laugh with the boys back home and I messaged the Keebra Park Instagram page seeing if they could get me over. They accepted it and I’m so happy I’m here now.

“I moved over from New Zealand when I was 15, now it’s my third year, my last year here and it’s a surreal feeling to be leaving Keebra Park with a national title.

“I can’t wait to start a new journey with the Bulldogs next year. It will be a new environment, I’m a bit nervous but excited for it.”

Sharks-backed Endeavour eye crucial Peter Mulholland Cup win

With a line-up dominated by emerging Cronulla players, Endeavour Sports High School will enjoy a strong home advantage against fellow powerhouse Patrician Brothers Fairfield at Sharks Stadium on Friday.

The teams will meet in Round 2 of the Peter Mulholland Cup (PMC) – the most prestigious schoolboy tournament in Australia comprising the best rugby league schools across NSW.

After losing last year’s final against Patrician Brothers Blacktown, Endeavour began their 2025 PMC campaign with a 40-4 victory over Farrar Memorial Agricultural School in May.

Captained by promising Sharks lock Tom Dellow, who won the club’s Junior Representative Player of the Year award in 2024, Endeavour is flush with Cronulla connections.

Coaches Dave Howlett and Brad Kelly are also involved with the Sharks, while halfback Liam Challenor, props Hudsyn Frost and Jake White, fullback Jaylan Herron and back-rower Blake Watman are just a handful of the Endeavour stars coming through Cronulla’s pathways.

Dellow, Frost, White, Watman and forward Sidney Truong have recently been selected for the NSW CHS Opens team, further showing the strength of the Sharks-Endeavour partnership.

The PMC involves the top 16 rugby league schools in NSW with pools of four.

The top two teams in each group progress to the knockout quarter-finals stage.

Endeavour is seeded third in this year’s competition, highlighting the Caringbah-based sporting school’s remarkable ability to sustain success.

Sharks SG Ball coach Kelly emphasised Endeavour’s unique standing in the region, stating, “Endeavour is the only school in the area that offers exposure to the Peter Mulholland Cup and the elite level of schoolboy rugby league.”

“This week’s game is important. We need to win to keep our hopes alive,” he added.

“Although we lost one pool game last year, it came down to for and against to get into the quarterfinals. Every game is super important and you’ve got to make sure you don’t leave anything unchecked.

“Patrician Brothers Fairfield are a good team. They had a good game against Hunter Sports High School (26-10 loss) and they’re going to be tough to beat on Friday.”

Kelly said having a large contingent of Sharks players is a bonus for Endeavour, who are pitted against a “who’s who” of rugby league schools including Westfields, Hunter, Hills, Illawarra and Matraville.

Powerhouse Catholic schools Patrician Brothers Blacktown, Patrician Brothers Fairfield, St Dominics and St Gregorys; plus others like Central Coast Sports and Erindale College.

“It definitely helps with continuity – they’ve either played SG Ball together or they’ve played Harold Matthews Cup,” Kelly said.

“They’ve got a good understanding of how we’re structured.

“Having Dave and I here as well as coaching down there, everything crosses over pretty closely.

“It gives us a bit of an advantage in terms of being able to keep the flow of the way we play the game going from Sharks into school.

“Fourteen of the 17 that played against Farrar were affiliated with the Sharks and the line-up will be fairly similar this week.”

Adding to the occasion on Friday, Endeavour will stage a 20-year reunion for their 2005 NRL Schoolboy Cup-winning team, including former Sharks players Mitch Brown and Blake Ayshford.

“Some of those boys are coming into the school to present the jerseys and have a chat to this year’s team, attend the game and have a BBQ afterwards,” Kelly said.

Kick-off on Friday is at 12pm, with free entry to the stadium.

The match will also be streamed live on KommunityTV.

From playground to playmaker The schools that make NRL stars

In western Sydney, two high schools have become certified champion factories for NRL clubs.

Churning out players for 15 of the NRL’s 17 clubs, Patrician Brothers’ College Blacktown and Westfields Sports High School in Fairfield West educated 52 players in the current competition, and their playing fields are teeming with future stars.

Data on the high schools attended by 98 per cent of NRL players, compiled by this masthead, reveals the league’s 500-odd players attended more than 250 high schools, with an almost even split between public and independent education.

Boasting 31 players across 13 teams, Patrician Brothers, in Sydney’s north-west, leads the pack, with Spencer Leniu, Terrell May and Jarome Luai among its alumni. Further south, Westfields Sports High School has 21 ex-students across nine teams.

This masthead categorised schools as either being public, independent, or overseas. The Gold Coast Titans had the highest percentage of publicly educated players, at 77 per cent.

Eighty-one per cent of Sydney Roosters players went to private schools, including Knox Grammar and Newington College, more than any other team.

In fact, more Roosters players attended Bellevue Hill’s Scots College than public school.

Public schools were seven top 10 schools for educating players, and 45 per cent of total schools attended by players. Independent schools made up 41 per cent, and overseas schools 14 per cent.

NSW also claimed seven schools in the top 10. Queensland public schools Keebra Park, Palm Beach Currumbin and Wavell State High took out third, fifth and eighth place, respectively.

Patrician Brothers’ head of rugby league, Greg Beacroft, said that the school’s reputation “means a lot” to students, but the competitiveness of the sport meant there was a broader responsibility in ushering players through its halls.

All classifications are Australia-centric. Warriors players educated “overseas” were educated in New Zealand; “public” and “independent” were educated in Australia.

“We tell the kids – particularly when they come in year 7: ‘You’re not coming here to play rugby league. Your first priority is to get a good education. Your second priority is to be a good, respectful person.’ We see rugby league as a bonus.”

Of the school’s ex-students in the league, more than half play in local clubs, with four players in the Bulldogs, Eels, Panthers and Tigers, respectively.

The school has up to 15 rugby league teams, with teachers and many former students serving as coaches. Training – typically two or three sessions a week – is scheduled around students’ external club commitments.

Beacroft said the X-factor that made Patrician Brothers so successful was a school community that “as a whole wants to help students achieve their best” and prioritised community outreach, including volunteering missions to feed the homeless.

“We live in an area where rugby league is very dominant,” said Beacroft. “You put all those factors together, and you get a school that wants to help kids do well and has high expectations in all areas. That’s a perfect partnership for those kids who are looking to further themselves.”

At Westfields Sports High – the alma mater of nine Tigers players – players train three to four times a week on the field and in the gym.

Westfields’ sport director Troy Weeden said each student came with a different set of skills, and he didn’t “want to put a label on them when they’re 12 years old, that they’re going to play NRL or not”.

“They’ve all got their own pathway. Some come here almost ready to go physically, and it might be a matter of upskilling them. Some might have a very different path where it might take them five or six years before they really have the confidence to show that ability.”

However, some players, like Raiders prop Trey Mooney and Tigers five-eighth Lachlan Galvin, show promise for a professional career from day one.

“From quite an early stage, he had all the makings,” Weeden said of Galvin.

“He had the competitiveness, he had the ability to read the game, he had the skill level, but probably didn’t have the physical nature that some of the other kids have had.

“I don’t think you ever see it when they’re 12 or 13. By the age of 16 or 17, you get a pretty good gauge of whether a kid could kick on. But you could never write off a player at a young age because of the different pathways they’re on.”

Athletes in Westfields’ rugby program are required to maintain good grades and 90 per cent attendance to play in their teams. Weeden said this was vital as many players are the first in their family to complete an HSC.

“They come to us with a focus on rugby league, but we’ve got to show them that rugby league only gets them 10 to 12 years of a great career.

They’ve got another 30 years where they’ve got to figure out their pathway through work, and not everyone’s going to get there.

There are 230 students in this rugby league program.

At most, we might get 10 to 15 in [the NRL].”

A single moment stranded in time between two young flyers has defined a massive year of NRL Schoolboys Cup – but in the end, only one could prevail. Watch the full match

The Steeden floated high above the Cbus Super Stadium turf.

With 90 seconds left in the NRL Schoolboys Cup national final, and two points bewteen the sides, time stood still.

The entire stadium crowd drew a collective breath as opposing wingers Patrician Brothers’ Chad Riddle and Palm Beach Currumbin’s Beau Hatmann leapt as the footy tumbled down from the sky – and Hartmann prevailed.

He picked Riddle’s pocket and surged towards the stripe untouched with 90 seconds left on the clock to hand Palm Beach Currumbin a two-point lead – just minutes after he had dropped a similar chance at full stretch for what would’ve been a certain try.

The moment meant Palm Beach Currumbin clinched their third NRL national schoolboys title in a gripping 18-16 triumph over Patrician Brothers College, Blacktown. It was a win as special as they come, in a match as gripping as they come.

“I don’t even know, it was a perfect kick,” said Hartmann of the magical try after the game.

“I couldn’t have done it without Zane (haflback Harrison). It came down to luck really.

“I can’t describe it, it’s just so good, it’s the best feeling ever.”

The result was a repeat of 2018 where the same outcome ensued between the two schools. On that day, Tom Dearden was the star for Palm Beach Currumbin.

This time, it was another Reds half in Zane Harrison.

Harrison was amazing. The final try was just reward for a great kicking display for the full 60 minutes, and his defence was as good as his attack.

Twice he scooped up the footy in dangerous territory and scurried out of the in-goal to save PBC’s blushes.

PBC coach Tim Maccan was full of praise

PBC coach Tim Maccan was full of praise for his star half, who is signed to the Titans and seems destined to have a long career lighting up Cbus Super Stadium ahead of him.

“He’s the type of player where you just give him the keys and he drives it for you. I love him. He’s been my halfback for the last three years and he’s been unbelievable,” Maccan said.

PBC defended gallantly all day, fighting tooth and nail under immense pressure against a star-studded Patties Blacktown outfit containing four Australian Schoolboys representatives.

The earlier two tries came courtesy of Reuben Tamariki, who spearheaded the Palm Beach Currumbin forward pack all day and earned himself a double thanks to some brilliant hole running.

“He’s had his best season this year, he really dug deep at times when we needed him and he did a great job today,” Maccan said.

The Reds coach was equally impressed with Marley Igasan, who had been absent from the side for the past three weeks.

“He was unbelievable, he played almost a whole game …. he’s been training his butt off in our extended group, he was amazing.”

PBC had led for much of the second half until Pats Blacktown five-eighth and co-captain Jared Haywood turned the match on its head in a matter of minutes with two superb cut out passes to set up back-to-back tries.

His first floater sent gun lock Tyson Sangalang under the posts, before he broke apart the Reds edge defence in a matter of seconds as he slowed himself to draw in the defence before picking out Riddle.

It’s no wonder Dragons coach Shane Flanagan rates front-rower Jacob Halangahu so highly given he delivered bruising run after bruising run through the middle and drove his side into very dangerous territory.

The loss continues a sorry streak for the proud Sydney school, who have just a lone national title to show for eight national final appearances.

For Maccan, a simple age-old cliche told him everything he needed to know. And it was one that proved hard to argue with come full-time.

“I just told the boys that (Patrician) have a lot of individual champions in their team,” he said.

“But we’re a champion team and that’ll always beat it.”

The most damaging player in schoolboys rugby league. Halangahu has a competitive fire that cannot be extinguished. He will hit hard and run even harder, keep an eye out for a game-changing offload.

While he is definitely in a mould of his own, the Dragons SG Ball winner plays a similar game to Titans big man David Fifita.

The mercurial halfback will make a welcome return for Palm Beach Currumbin in the national final after his well-publicised absence from the state final due to concussion. The Titans have just extended the young gun’s contract in a sign of just what he brings to the party. A natural leader on the field, he will have a hand in everything PBC does.

The Eels young gun plays eyes up football behind the ruck, and will be able to spot an issue with the markers before they realise there is one. Every play for the Patties side begins with Coinakis, and the Australian Schoolboys representative will be determined to get them on the front foot early.

The damaging ballrunner can be even more damaging without it.

The Titans young gun, who spent a pre-season with their NRL side last Summer, has been a revelation out wide for Palm Beach Currumbin in recent years.

He was also part of the Queensland Under-19 Origin squad this year and picked in the Australian Schoolboys side.

Position: Halfback, NRL club: Panthers

He hasn’t played a game of rugby league in more than two months, but don’t expect Sydir to be putting the handbrake on in this one.

He targeted the national final as his return, and will be desperate to deliver that premiership glory to his school in his final year. Possesses a strong running game and will be the chief organiser for the Patties attack.

Powered by a slew of emerging Sharks players, Caringbah-based Endeavour Sports High School will tackle Patrician Brothers’ College Blacktown in Wednesday’s prestigious Peter Mulholland Cup grand final.

The competition comprises the best schoolboy talent from NSW, Victoria and the ACT. Endeavour earned a place in the decider at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.

After advancing through the pool stage and fighting back from 14-0 down to defeat Canberra’s Erindale College 16-14 in last week’s thrilling preliminary final.

The winner of Endeavour and Patrician Brothers’ Blacktown will face the top Queensland school – Palm Beach Currumbin or Kirwan State High, who will clash on Thursday – for the NRL National Schoolboys Cup title on September 11.

Thirteen of Endeavour’s expected 17-man squad are Sharks juniors, nine of them having represented the club this season in the Harold Matthews Cup team guided to the finals by Brad Kelly, who is also a member of the school’s coaching staff.

The Cronulla contingent includes Australian Schoolboys pair Tom Dellow, a workhorse lock who was crowned the Sharks’ Junior Representative Player of the Year in May.

Nikora Williams, a strike centre who played SG Ball Cup this year before progressing swiftly to the under-21 Jersey Flegg ranks.

Endeavour coach Dave Howlett

Endeavour coach Dave Howlett, who has a storied association with the Sharks spanning more than 20 years including a stint as an NRL assistant coach, is confident his boys can defy their underdog tag and come away victorious.

“It’s a massive bonus for so many of our players to have that continuity at the Sharks and then jump in as the nucleus of our school team,” said Howlett, who has been Cronulla’s SG Ball head coach for the past three seasons.

“There’s also continuity in the coaching style given the Harold Matts coach – Brad Kelly – coaches with the school. That’s been a real foundation for our success this year.”

Endeavour has waged several memorable battles with Patrician Brothers’ Blacktown over the years, upstaging its rival in the 2014 national GIO Schoolboy Cup in what was the Sutherland Shire school’s most recent final.

A decade on, Howlett is hoping to repeat the dose.

“We’ve had a long history playing each other at the pointy end of schoolboy footy,” he said. “Their team has similar traits to their teams of previous years – they’ve got four Australian Schoolboys in their line-up, they’re big, they’re powerful.

“We know it’s going to be a big challenge for us, but we’re all excited about the opportunity. It’s been 10 years since we’ve been in a final.

“They had a team chock-full of Australian Schoolboys and we were the underdogs then as well. We’re hoping for the same outcome on Wednesday.

“There’s a real buzz around the school population, the staff and students.

“We could feel it last week when we came to school the next day. That buzz has built over the week. We’re looking forward to having strong support.”

A renowned nursery of world-class talent, Endeavour has produced a smorgasbord of NRL stars including current Sharks Will Kennedy and Teig Wilton.

Howlett and Kelly’s involvement, as well as Endeavour’s sterling reputation for developing young players in its argeted program, have helped ensure the long-term strength of Cronulla’s junior representative and pathways systems.

“We’re really proud of the link between the school and the Sharks,” Howlett said.

Kick-off between Endeavour Sports High School and Patrician Brothers’ College Blacktown on Wednesday is at 12.30pm. If you can’t make it to Campbelltown, the match will be streamed live through KommunityTV.

In an eagerly anticipated Peter Mulholland Cup Qualifying Final, Endeavour Sports showcased their skilfulness with a comprehensive 52-6 victory over Holy Cross.

The opening ten minutes was an exhibition of intense physicality and strong starts from both sides.

Endeavour broke the deadlock with a well-executed play as Lewis Sargent-Wilson delivered a perfectly placed kick, allowing Kaden Garner to score the first try.

This opening score set the stage for Endeavour’s near flawless first half performance, as they dominated proceedings to establish a commanding 30-0 lead by halftime.

The second half saw a more balanced contest with Holy Cross displaying resilience and determination, keeping the game tightly contested for extended periods.

However, Endeavour’s class shone through once again with a series of late tries that sealed their dominant victory.

Holy Cross, despite being under strength, played with commendable spirit and represented their school with pride. Their effort and sportsmanship were evident throughout the match.

For Endeavour, standout performances included Kaden Garner’s hat-trick of tries and a memorable try by Year 10 student Cruz Parkin, who marked his debut in the Black Jumper.

Endeavour’s victory propels them forward in the Peter Mulholland Cup to the Grand Final Qualifier in two weeks time.

National Schoolgirl Cup provides new NRLW pathway

The revamped National Schoolgirl Cup has kicked off for 2024, with talented young players from across the nation hoping to take the next step in their rugby league development.

One player who has made the most of the playing pathway on offer is Maleala Su’a, who captained Mabel Park to a 26-8 win over The Hills Sports High School at Allianz Stadium to take out the inaugural National Schoolgirls Cup national title last year.

The team had earlier defeated Kirwan State High School 38-0 to take out the Queensland Schoolgirls Cup to earn their opportunity to claim national honours.

It’s been a big 12 months for Su’a who has since joined the top 24 squad for the Gold Coast Titans and also played nine games with the Souths Logan Magpies in the open women’s BMD Premiership.

Earlier this week, the versatile talent who has spent time playing in the forwards and in the halves, was also named in Queensland’s Under 19 State of Origin team.

“The National Schoolgirl Cup is a top-level elite competition for the schoolgirls to mirror the schoolboys competition and gives an opportunity for them to play in a higher level competition,” the NRL’s Queensland school participation co-ordinator Jesse Naumann said.

“A lot of these girls are getting signed to NRLW clubs now as well, so it gives them a schoolgirl pathway of progression.

“Maleala, she’s definitely a standout player who has come from Mabel Park and is part of the Titans squad, so shows that there’s a realistic pathway for girls coming through the competition to the NRLW.”

The National Schoolgirls competition is now in its third year, but in 2024, it has been revamped to accommodate a growth in participating teams, with schools divided into three pools by region.

“This year we’ve made a proper structure of the competition and formed the schools into pools and we’ve got more schools involved in the competition,” Naumann said.

“We have more in Central Queensland … and more from North Queensland involved as well.

“It’s only the third year of the Schoolgirl Cup, but it will be the second year of it being (truly) ‘national’.

Last year was our first national final, which was taken out by Mabel Park, who are one of the Pool A teams this year.

They played The Hills Sports High, who were the winners from New South Wales.

“I say it’s the third year of the competition because we did have a schoolgirls competition in 2022, but it only went as far as the Queensland final.

We didn’t get to a national final, so it’s the third year for us, but only the second year including a national final.”

This year, Queensland’s National Schoolgirl Cup Pool A (SEQ) is supported by the Gold Coast Titans who will provide support for the schools and match officials.

To celebrate the start of the competition this year, the Titans held a special launch of Pool A schools at the Titans High Performance Centre during an NRLW training session.

Coach Karyn Murphy and captain Georgia Hale met with the girls who also received a tour of the club’s training facilities.

Unlike the 9-a-side Karyn Murphy Cup which provides its own development goals.

The National Schoolgirls Cup competition is a full 13-a-side contest that gives players the opportunity to experience elite schools rugby league and play at a high standard in a different style of game.

Westfields are the Australian Schoolboys champions after producing an opening 40 minutes that gave Palm Beach Currumbin no chance of recovery.

The team who have made come-from-behind victories their specialty all season didn’t need the inspiration of a comeback this time.

Westfields saved their best until last, racing out to a 26-0 halftime lead, then withstanding a brief comeback and finally charging home to put the seal on one of the most dominant National Schoolboys final victories of all time.

With five eighth Lachlan Galvin pulling the strings, Westfields hammered Gold Coast school Palm Beach Currumbin 38-4 to claim their second national title.

GALVIN STEPS UP TO INSPIRE BIG WESTFIELDS SUCCESS

Westfields coach Troy Weeden said he was ‘relieved’ at the result.

“The boys knew what they needed to do,” Weeden said.

“Having that extra week to recover after the final really helped the boys so they could just go in and focus on their football.”

Galvin’s performance secured him both the player of the match and player of the season awards and Weeden said he wasn’t surprised with the accolades.

“Lachie Galvin did what Lachie Galvin does,” he said.

“He’s a competitor, he’s a winner and he showed that in the first half particularly.”

Galvin was on fire in the opening half, scoring two tries as Westfields raced out to a 12-0 lead just over 10 minutes into the match.

He would have scored a third shortly after following a strong run from Will Craig, but fumbled the offload.

Dion Paranthoiene-Williams added another try for Westfields in the 22nd minute, followed by a try right on the buzzer from Sosefo Finau.

Five goals from Roy Quiroz-Mapasua, including a late penalty goal, gave Westfields the unassailable halftime break.

The Queenslanders finally put themselves on the scoreboard to open the second half with Credence Donovan scoring following solid offensive pressure from his team.

Westfields seemed to lack the same power they had in the first half and fumbled multiple opportunities.

But Galvin rallied his troops as he brilliantly teamed with Craig to set up a try for Hosea Kedzlie with 10 minutes remaining.

Markuzz Ofanoa and Saint Fuitimau added two more tries late on to put an emphatic note on the success.

NSW champions Westfields will put their undefeated record this season on the line, after clinching the Peter Mulholland Cup title last month in a thrilling finish against rivals Palm Beach Currumbin.

It hasn’t been the smoothest of roads for the Sydneysiders, who have had to fight their way from behind on the scoreboard in all but one of their games this season.

While their slow starts have threatened to hamper Westfields, the young squad possesses a confidence and belief that they have the ability to win games from any position.

“We know we can do it no matter what position we are in the game,” Westfields coach Troy Weeden said.

“You only have to win it in the 60th minute and that is what we did (in the state final).”

Palm Beach Currumbin has endured a fightback of its own this season, after winning only two of its first five matches in the Langer Trophy.

An 18-6 win over Gold Coast rivals Keebra Park State High kickstarted a run of six-straight wins, including last month’s Phil Hall Cup state grand final against St Patrick’s College, Mackay.

In that period, the red army has conceded an average of 6.3 points per game.

Palm Beach Currumbin coach Tim Maccan will have confidence in his troops that they can shut down their rivals offence much like they did to St Patrick’s College in the 28-0 shutout in the Phil Hall Cup decider.

While Westfields were class under pressure, they will have to be at their very best in the final if Patties Blacktown produce a repeat of their NRL Schoolboys Cup semi masterpiece. Relive the action.

Westfields held off a tenacious challenge from Erindale to set up a Peter Mulholland Cup grand final showdown with Patrician Brothers Blacktown next Wednesday.

Lachlan Galvin was one of the stars of the show, scoring a try and contributing to multiple others to help his side to come from behind to beat the Canberra-based school 22-16 at Campbelltown Stadium.

It was the second year in a row Erindale have gone out at ther semifinal stage.

Westfields’ Roy Quiroz-Mapusa said getting to the grand final is an incredible feeling.

“What an adrenaline rush,” he said.

“We just had to keep believing in each other.

“There’s a reason Erindale got to the finals, but I had full confidence in the boys.”

Erindale gained the advantage early, with Olli Bolatagici benefiting from a Jonah Anderson kick to claim the first try.

Australian Schoolboy Xavier Cacciotti doubled the advantage for Erindale soon after, and a perfect two from two from Sam Gash gave the Canberra side a solid 12-0 lead early on.

Westfields coach Troy Weeden admitted the two early tries was concerning, but the boys didn’t let it impact their confidence.

“To go 12-0 down made me nervous,” Weeden said.

“Our mentality changed after that, we know we can score points when we are in the area, but we just weren’t there enough.”

Galvin was the first to reduce the deficit with a try followed by Brycen Anae Roberts and Sosefo Finau in quick succession to hand Westfields a 16-12 lead heading into the break.

Westfields made it four unanswered tries 10 minutes into the second half as Heith Pritchard powered through from dummy half for the try. A third successful conversion for Quiroz-Mapusua put the side 10 points in front.

Erindale’s Bolatagici was able to claw back some points off the back of an impressive run from Mathias Tomuli-Ah-Koui, but an unsuccessful conversion from Gash kept Erindale just out of reach.

The pro-Erindale crowd were fired up and a sin-bin for Westfields Markuzz Ofanoa only made them louder.

But Westfields held their nerve.

Super Patties Blacktown turn in semifinal special

Patrician Brothers Blacktown have shocked the NRL Schoolboys competition by demolishing the previously undefeated St Dominic’s 32-0 to secure a spot in next week’s grand final.

Fullback Wilson De Courcey called the result and performance ‘amazing’.

“Just crazy,” he said.

“I wasn’t expecting that scoreline, I thought it would be a closer game.

“But we’ve been aiming for this since the start of the season and to get this result is amazing.”

The opening few minutes were very physical with neither side giving an inch.

Marcellus Iakopo got the scoring underway early, dodging past St Dom’s defence before Thomas Epere doubled the lead soon after, following a kick from De Courcey.

St Dom’s were plagued by errors close to the line and the Pats defence was unyielding.

Australian Schoolboy De Courcey grabbed a try of his own just before halftime to extend the lead to 18-0 and it was a long way back for St Dom’s.

St Dom’s were gifted a much-needed advantage midway through the second half when Patties player Langa Tokuafu was sent to the sin-bin for a late tackle.

De Courcey said going a man down was frustrating.

“It’s little things like that, discipline, that we really need to sort out,” De Courcey said.

“If it was a closer game, that could have really affected us.”

St Dom’s though couldn’t break through. The closest they got was when a powerful charge from Jack Attard was thwarted by the defence right on the line.

Even down a player, Patties were unstoppable.

A brilliant run from Jaxon Edgar was rewarded as Jack Nicholas found the tryline, and co-captain Finau Latu added a second try in as many minutes to put St Dom’s out of their misery.

Patties’ confidence only grew from there as Nicholas picked up his second try of the match for a stunning 32-0 lead.

The grand finalists from 2022 may be gone, but there is certainly no doubting the quality of this year’s Peter Mulholland Cup final four.

Patties Fairfield went out in the group stages while Hills were quarterfinal victims, but in Westfields Sports, Erindale College, St Dominic’s and Patrician Brothers Blacktown, there are four teams in peak form and all are capable of winning the title on their best day.

And the semifinal draw only adds to the intrigue.

Westfields boast a four-game unbeaten run as they prepare for a match-up with Erindale.

Winger Will Craig has been one of the stars of the show, scoring 10 tries in those four games.

“He’s just so strong,” coach Troy Weeden said after Westfields’ 52-6 quarterfinal demolition of All Saints Maitland.

“He’s good at the art, everything he does is just superb and he gets us out of a lot of trouble.”

Australian schoolboy Lachlan Galvin has also been pivotal to Westfields’ success this year and Weeden praised the No.6’s ability to ‘always scoring tries, or contribute to them.’

While heading into the semifinals with plenty of momentum, Weedon conceded there were a few areas he wanted his team to pick up in.

“We need to fix our possession with the ball and control overall,” he said.

“As long as they put on a good performance and look after themselves we’ll be in with a shot.”

RELIVE ALL THE QUARTERFINAL ACTION HERE

Erindale’s quarterfinal clash against Endeavour Sports High School was ‘a bit of a weird game’, according to coach Ashley Barnes.

They eventually pulled off a 28-24 golden point win to reach the semifinals for the second year in a row. Last year they were knocked out in a thriller by Hills.

Barnes said he’s not underestimating the challenge Westfields will pose.

“If we’re as ill disciplined as we were against Endeavour, we’re going to have a really tough game,” Barnes said.

“They’re a powerful side with some really good players there, so we’ll really need to tidy up our game.

“I think if we just focus on us we’ll be really competitive.”

Jack Nicholas scored four tries in the quarterfinals.

In the other game, Patrician Brothers Blacktown have suddenly found a winning formula and head into their clash with St Dominic’s College feeling good about their prospects.

Their 64-6 win over Victorian University Secondary College in the quarterfinals featured an incredible 12 tries, four of which came from Jack Nicholas.

Nicholas said the result was a testament to how well the team are working together now after they fixed the mistakes that plagued them throughout the competition.

“We’re spreading the ball really well, our defence is really good,” Nicholas said after the quarterfinal win.

“Those four tries came from my teammates, we were just strong as a team and hopefully that takes us all the way.”

With St Dom’s going into the clash without yet losing a match in the competition, Nicholas said it’ll be a really tough battle.

“It’ll be a hard game, they’re a good team,” he said.

“It’s always tough when we play Dom’s but we’ll get back to training, work hard and give it a good crack.”

St Doms have been impressive form all year.

St Dom’s struggled with discipline issues during their 26-18 win over Hills Sports, letting in three tries in the second half and having Jack Ewer sent to the sin bin for a high tackle after looking comfortable in the opening half.

“We just switched off,” coach Kyle Churchill said.

“We weren’t cohesive as a group both in defence and in attack, and it took its toll.”

Endeavour SHS Targeted Sports Program

Having long been a nursery for the Sharks with an extensive list of NRL and junior representative players coming through the school program.

Endeavour Sports High in Caringbah is the perfect place to combine a quality education with elite level sport.

Offering quality coaching and a unique Rugby League experience, Endeavour Sports High is accepting registrations for trialists interested in being a part of the Year 7 Rugby League Targeted Sports Program in 2024.

The trials are scheduled to take place early in Term 2 on Tuesday, May 2 and Friday, May 5.

Endeavour Sports has enjoyed a successful association with the Sharks extending over two decades.

With senior school coaches Dave Howlett (2023 Sharks SG Ball) and Brad Kelly (2023 Matthews Cup) currently involved in the Sharks junior representative and pathways program.

Howlett also enjoyed a stint as a Sharks NRL assistant coach from 2018-2020 and has wins in the SG Ball and Jersey Flegg competitions on his coaching resume.

“While the Rugby League program is a significant part of the schooling experience.

Education still comes first at Endeavour Sports High School,” Howlett said.

“Students are supported with both their studies and sport in a caring and nurturing environment, geared to bring out the best in each individual.”

Current Sharks NRL squad members Will Kennedy and Teig Wilton are Endeavour ‘old boys’.

As are the likes of Alex Johnston (Souths), Jamayne Isaako (Dolphins), Martin Taupau (Broncos), Paul Momirovski (Roosters), Reece Robson (Cowboys), Scott Sorensen (Panthers), Shaun Lane (Eels) and Luciano Leilua (Cowboys).

A number of players in the current Sharks Jersey Flegg team are also recent graduates of the school and the targeted sports Rugby League program.

Kennedy arrived from Bathurst largely unheralded but with perseverance and the support of his teachers and rugby league coaches at Endeavour, has grown into a leading player for the Sharks at the NRL level.

“I really enjoyed my schooling experience at Endeavour. They certainly assisted with my Rugby League development,

I have no doubt the culture and educational opportunities at the school also helped to make me a better person,” Kennedy said.
