Wavell edge out Redcliffe

Redcliffe SHS v Wavell SHS, Langer Trophy/Walters Cup

Wavell held their nerve to confirm their spot in the Langer Trophy quarter finals as Redcliffe’s wait for their first win goes on another week. Relive all the action from the LIVE STREAM.

Watch the replay of the Langer Trophy Round 6 – Redcliffe SHS v Wavell SHS

With major points and finals chances on the line, it was the visitors, Wavell SHS, who found their second wind and snuck away with a 20-10 win over Redcliffe in round six of the Langer Trophy.

Neither team could break the deadlock in the opening 10 minutes, with both showing extra effort on the attack and defensive end.

But after 14 minutes, Redcliffe finally found themselves in some good field position, and it was none other than Australian schoolboys player John Fineanganofo who crashed over.

Wavell hit back through a nice inside draw and pass between Carlos Ka and Keyarn Pene, before the visitors were in again just before halftime thanks to some good short-side play on the left-hand touchline from centre Tusi Tofu.

Play resumed in the second half with the score at 10-6, and after Redcliffe’s Loka Toia was held up over the line, the home side drew level with a much-needed try.

Those celebrations didn’t last long though with Wavell SHS marching down the other end minutes later and extending their lead 16-10.

A chip kick in behind was fumbled by the Redcliffe backs and right-side winger Riley Jenkins dived onto the ball to score his first of the afternoon.

With less than three minutes remaining, Toia was sent to the sin bin, and that was all she wrote, with Wavell SHS finishing the match 10-point victors and securing their spot in the quarter finals.

Replay: Walters Cup Round 6 – Redcliffe SHS v Wavell SHS

There wasn’t much in this Walters Cup clash, but some strong defensive efforts from Wavell SHS proved the slight difference in a 22-12 victory against Redcliffe SHS.

With both sides chancing their arm in attack and also going toe-to-toe in the defensive line, it was clear from the opening sets that both sides had come to play.

After 10 minutes Wavell opened the scoring by keeping the ball alive and getting it through a number of hands for their left centre to dive over.

A kick restart that landed out on the full wasn’t how Redcliffe SHS wanted to resume play and that was enough of an invite for Wavell SHS to grab their second.

The next kick restart Redcliffe were able to get the ball back before stringing a few simple sets together to get on the scoreboard.

An improved defensive set from Redcliffe wasn’t enough to stop their opposition with Wavell putting up a high ball and adding to their lead.

Neither team was able to gain momentum after the break until Redcliffe crossed the chalk with a much needed four pointer.

Both sides again held their own on the defensive end, with only one final try coming from Wavell SHS before the referee called full time.

PREVIEW

Both sides will be looking to snag the two points in round six when Redcliffe State High School welcome Wavell State High School in the Langer Trophy at Kayo Stadium.

Redcliffe will be searching for their first win of the season while the sixth-placed Wavell will hope to secure their spot in the Langer Trophy quarter-finals with a second win of the season.

The crunch clash will be exclusive live streamed on KommunityTV via the Courier Mail on Wednesday afternoon, with the Walter Cup clash kicking the action off at 2.30pm.

Both sides are coming off round five losses but both coaches admitted it was a very different feeling in the post-match sheds.

“It was a different feeling compared to our earlier losses in the season,” Wavell SHS head coach Paul Stanley said following his sides 18-8 loss to Keebra Park SHS.

“The boys know that they played well, we’re getting closer to our best each week so the boys were disappointed but they didn’t have regret for not giving their best effort.”

For Redcliffe, head coach Jay Wilkinson labelled the 69-22 defeat to Marsden SHS as ‘embarrassing’.

“It was a little bit embarrassing on our own turf and on a big day,” he said.

“I think we sat down, had a good chat about it and have all recommitted and to be honest it’s been the best week at training in quite a while so they’ve responded well.”

With the top seven sides progressing through to finals at the end of the regular season, Stanley said it was a big game for both sides.

“We’re not looking at the table at all because those boys will be playing at their absolute best and it’s a bit of a rivalry for the boys given we’re so close and they’re playing against their mates,” Stanley said.

“We know the talent that Redcliffe has across the park plus they’ve got one Queensland and one Australian schoolboy in Loka Toia and John Fineanganofo so it’ll be important for us to limit their involvement.”

Wilkinson said his side’s focus had been on continuous improvement each week.

“Marsden was a blimp as we didn’t improve but we’re focused on these last two games of the year and we’re pretty confident that if we can play our style that we can pick up two wins and finish sixth,” he said.

“That gets us into finals but also keeps us in the competition next year which let’s the boys leave a legacy.

“Both sides would like to have a couple more wins so it’ll be which school comes out with more enthusiasm and which side gives it a real crack.”

Wavell v Keebra Park Langer Trophy

Schoolboy Cup Live stream: Wavell SHS v Keebra Park SHS, Langer Trophy

Keebra Park were given quite a scare as Wavell produced their best performance of the season to nearly pull off a Langer Trophy upset.

Watch a full replay of Wavell SHS v Keebra Park SHS (Langer).

Wavell SHS produced their best performance of the season, but it was Keebra Park SHS who prevailed in a thriller.

Keebra Park SHS won 16-8, surviving a spirited Wavell effort, which included a dramatic surge late in the second half.

Down 16-4, Wavell winger Carlos Ka scored a sensational try, snatching the ball from the night sky after a towering bomb across the field from his classy halfback Zac Herdegen. That try reduced the margin to 16-8.

Herdegen then sliced through minutes later, sprinting 20m and throwing a dummy.

He looked certain to score, but he lost his balance as he was headed toward the posts.

Earlier in the half, Keebra Park had extended their margin to 16-4 after a glorious ball from Austin Marsters found his centre, Xavier Tauaifaiga, who scored.

It was a good win by Keebra SHS given the improved execution of Wavell and the unavailability of star halfback Ryder Williams.

Earlier, Jesse Soric delivered Keebra a 10-4 lead at the break with two thrusts on the eve of halftime.

A replacement for Williams, Soric capitalised on Keebra’s last-gasp forward surge late in the half to put his edge forward Jett Bryce into a gap.

While Bryce was tackled by Wavell centre Keyarn Pene, he was able to play-the-ball quickly and Soric, looping around to the blind side, blasted over to score.

Wavell winger Riley Jenkins had a busy debut, scoring the first try of the game and then putting his body in front of his opposite, Zyroam Herlihy, who went within a whisker of scoring for Keebra.

Wavell had started smartly, controlling the ball and giving energetic hooker Harrison Hill chances to shine as the starting dummy half.

They also controlled possession and with Herdegen’s smart kicking game, Wavell were playing their best football of the season.

But Keebra Park’s power forwards were the foundation of their reply, recapturing the lead 6-4, and extending it to 10-4 at the break.

It was an intense battle

Walters Cup thriller as late conversion seals draw

The battle of the fullbacks finished in a draw and so did the match, with Wavell SHS scoring in the last minute to snatch a 20-20 draw.

Wavell halfback Timahna Tandy kicked a conversion 20 seconds from fulltime – from the sideline – after his centre, Devine Timu, had scored in the corner.

One minute earlier Keebra had scored what looked the winning try by halfback Jai Bilish.

However, Wavell interchange forward Payten Gifford stole possession back for Wavell, giving his side one last throw of the dice.

REPLAY: Wavell SHS v Keebra Park SHS (Walters)

It was a wonderful game featuring Wavell fullback Sangstar Figota and Keebra Park No.1 David Bryenton showing x-factor skills.

Both Figota and his five-eighth, Azariah Toki-Matauri, who is another big gun, provided the horse power leading up to Wavell recapturing the lead, 14-10, into the second half when centre Tremaine Courteney crossed.

In the first half, Figota also made a break from nothing to put his team into position for its second try.

With limited chances Bryenton’s footwork and speed was effortless for Keebra, and it was his half break which also positioned Keebra for its first try of the second half by halfback Jai Bilish.

This was after Bryenton brilliantly scored in the first half.

Bilish’s try 12 minutes from the end enabled Keebra Park to poke its nose level with Wavell – 14-14 – and then Bilish’s second try four minutes from fulltime looked like it had won the game for his side.

Wavell forward Eethan Laga’aia was also an impact player both in defence and with his carries, while Keebra Park prop Christian Rivers finished strongly.

Earlier in the match, Keebra Park scored first down a crowded blindside when centre Kendrix Marsh squeezed over in traffic.

However, Wavell got into their groove with power running and ball control, putting halfback Timahna Tandy into good attacking positions.

Once he ran himself to score, and on another occasion he drove a bomb toward his winger who tapped back inside for centre Devine Timu to cross.

PREVIEW

Wavell SHS students will be inspired by the jerseys they will wear designed by Indigenous students when they confront dangerous Keebra Park on Wednesday.

To celebrate NAIDOC 2023, Wavell’s proud first VIII will be wearing Indigenous jersey designed by their classmates.

Students personal handywork retains Wavell’s traditional school colours, while incorporating beautiful Indigneous artwork in the mid-drift and then bright, earthy colours snaking up the jersey to the neck line.

It could be just the connection with community to help Wavell finds its best form of the season. Wavell have a 1-3 win-loss record, and their rivals Keebra the exact opposition – a 3-1 win-loss record.

Wavell coach Paul Stanley said Wavell’s first two loses were “below the standards we set for ourselves’’.

But last week effort was not in question, it was execution, but the signs were positive.

“The players know what needs to change on the field, it’s up to us to get the job done,” coach Stanley said.

Keebra will aim to keep its fire burning.

A shot at the Queensland schoolboys state final

The St Brendan’s College open team has a shot at the Queensland schoolboys state final after winning the inaugural Dolphins Cup title.

On Wednesday the Yeppoon-based school will meet the North Queensland area champion, Ignatius Park State High School, in a Queensland semi-final.

The winner will take on the victor of the South Queensland final for the right to call themselves the best rugby league school in the state.

It has been an exciting ride for St Brendan’s Yeppoon to earn their guaranteed semi-final spot by taking out the first ever Dolphins Cup.

2022 Dolphins Cup Champions, St Brendan’s.

Previously Wide Bay and Central Queensland schools were forced to travel to be part of the North Queensland competition and win their way down that path.

But the Dolphins Cup has changed that, and importantly minimized travel for teams and kept kids in the classroom more often.

St Brendan’s won the Dolphins Cup over Rockhampton school The Cathedral College behind a stellar display from second rower Connor Hind.

2022 Dolphins Challenge Champions, St Brendan’s.

Strong defence ensured this match was going to take some time to determine a winner, with both teams remaining scoreless at halftime.

Man of the match Hind was dominant in the second half as St Brendan’s went on to a 26-6 victory.

Earlier in the under-15s match, St Brendan’s outlasted Emmaus College to take home the Dolphins Challenge trophy.

Harvey Mahoney was named man of the match as St Brendan’s established a 10-6 halftime lead and hung on to win 16-12.

Ignatius Park College claims Confraternity Shield

Townsville’s Ignatius Park College stamped itself as the modern powerhouse of the Confraternity Shield as it stormed to victory over host school St Patrick’s College, Mackay, today in the first final since 2019.

Ignatius Park’s 32-0 win, in front of a crowd of 5000 people at BB Print Stadium, was its sixth Confraternity Shield victory in the last 10 years and just reward for a dominant week by the north Queenslanders.

The alma mater of the likes of Valentine Holmes, Michael Morgan, Coen Hess and Aidan Guerra became the first school to defend the Shield title since St Brendan’s College, Yeppoon won in 2015.

And they did it with the words of Morgan and Hess spurring them on.

Both players sent video messages to the Ignatius Park team telling them that the week of Confraternity Carnival was among the most special in their lives because they played with their mates in a carnival unlike any other in Australian rugby league.

“Those messages were really important for our players because it reinforced to them the opportunity that a week of Confro brings,” Ignatius Park coach Steven Lansley said.

“Our college really enjoys playing in this carnival. The players buy into camp here and they don’t want to let each other down. Almost all of these players have been together at the college for many years so they are genuine mates.

“We are very open with the fact that Confraternity Carnival is our biggest target of the year.

We start planning in January so it’s satisfying to see it all come together for the boys today.”

Action from the 42dn Confraternity Carnival. Photo: Academy Photography

This 42nd Confraternity Carnival, sponsored by CQ University and staged by Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Rugby League, brings together 48 boys’ teams and nine girls’ teams from Catholic and Independent schools across Queensland.

A host of Queensland’s greatest players have emerged from the event and there were plenty of comparisons this week to the last full carnival in Bundaberg three years ago before the COVID pandemic ruined the events in 2020 and 2021.

In 2019, Ignatius Park conceded only two tries across the six games during the week before rolling The Cathedral College 34-0 in the decider.

This week, the blue-and-white wall of Ignatius Park again conceded only two tries while rattling up 196 points in its three pool matches and three finals.

Today’s decider was much anticipated after St Patrick’s College won through to its first final since 2003 with a quality team featuring 10 players with links to NRL clubs.

But they could not handle the size, speed and defensive mettle of Ignatius Park as coach Lansley’s six months of planning yielded a treasured win.

“Defensively, these players just didn’t want to give in today,” Lansley said.

“We know that St Pat’s are a very good team and they had this huge crowd here so it wasn’t going to be easy. But we started well and we probably took the crowd out of it.”

Ignatius Park opened the scoring with a try in the seventh minute to Jack Prior before the power of prop Jamaine Stanley in the 23rd minute for a 14-0 lead. St Patrick’s threw plenty at the Ignatius Park defence, but it held firm.

In the play-off for third place, St Brendan’s College, Yeppoon defeated Rockhampton’s The Cathedral College 38-6 while the Bob Linder Trophy, for the second half of the Division 1 teams, was claimed by Shalom College over Padua College.

The Neil Bloxsidge Plate – the highest prize for the Division 2 teams – was won by Dalby’s Our Lady of the Southern Cross College in a 28-10 win over St Edmund’s College, Ipswich.

Only two weeks ago, the Dalby school was entered for Division 3, yet it accepted a request to move into the higher division when a team asked to push back.

The other three trophies awarded today went to Clairvaux MacKillop College, Mt Gravatt (Confraternity Bowl), Xavier Catholic College, Hervey Bay (Confraternity Cup) and St Anthony’s College, Townsville (Men of League Challenge).

Four players each from Ignatius Park College and St Patrick’s College, Mackay, were selected in the QISSRL Merit team including player of the carnival Jamal Shibasaki.

The 43rd Confraternity Carnival will be held in June next year in Brisbane, hosted by St Laurence’s College.

Watch the finals from the Karyn Murphy Cup, NRL Schoolboy Trophy and NRL Schoolboy Phil Hall Cup.

The school rugby league season will end with a bang today when News Corp Australia live-streams three grand finals – including the Phil Hall Cup state final between Palm Beach Currumbin SHS and St Brendan’s College.

WATCH IN THE PLAYER ABOVE

Coverage starts at 9am with live-streaming of the Karyn Murphy Cup schoolgirl competition, continues with the NRL Schoolboy Trophy game between St Augustine’s and Lockyer District, and then culminates with the Phil Hall Cup grand final at 3.30pm – all streamed by The Courier-Mail, Gold Coast Bulletin, Morning Bulletin and News Corp affiliates.

PLAYERS TO WATCH IN TODAY’S GRAND FINALS

Two of the great discovery players unearthed this season have been PBC SHS fullback Keano Kini and Tane Kiriona of St Brendan’s College.

Kini was signed by Gold Coast Titans before any of their talent scouts saw him play a league game live.

A year 11 student, Kini was actually signed after the Titans saw him playing tag (touch football) in his native Auckland.

The Titans were looking for a halve and had been tipped off about his ability, so the first chance talent scouts got to see him in the flesh was playing touch football – not rugby league.

The Titans had to move quickly, because two other NRL clubs were circling the then 15-year-old.

So the Titans sold their vision, and Kini signed which led him to coming to Palm Beach Currumbin SHS this season to “learn the Aussie way’’ and test himself in the elite Langer Trophy schoolboy environment.

“They (the Titans) talked to us about the pathways and we (the family) thought it was a good opportunity,’’ Kini said.

Kini said deciding to attend Palm Beach Currumbin SHS was made easier because PBC star centre Deine Mariner was a club mate of his at the Marist club in New Zealand.

In a late season master stroke by PBC SHS coach Tim Maccan, Kini reverted to a ball-playing extra half despite still wearing the No.1 jersey.

“They wanted me more involved on the line, basically another half on the line on the left side,’’ said Kini, the joint Justin Hodges Medallist player of the year alongside Chris Faagutu (Marsden SHS).

“I like five-eighth and will probably move into the halves next year, but I am enjoying both.’’

Like Kini, St Brendan’s Kiriona was a relative unknown prior to this season.

A middle powerhouse, Kiriona first raised eyebrows playing with the Central Capras in the Meninga Cup under 18 competition in March and April.

His mid field dominance helped Capras into the finals, and he continued that form for St Brendan’s in the Confraternity Shield and Aaron Payne Cup campaigns.

“He is a big mobile aggressive middle forward,’’ said St Brendan’s coach Scott Minto.

“Kiriona will be that strong presence holding up the middle third of the field.

“Look for him combining well with his fellow forward sidekick Noah Corcoran.’’

Players to Watch in Wednesday’s NRL Schoolboys Phil Hall Cup Grand final between PBC SHS and St Brendan’s – and also in the schoolgirls Karyn Murphy Cup round-robin.

A feast of schoolboy and schoolgirl finals football awaits us on Wednesday with state grand finals in both the Phil Hall Cup and Karyn Murphy Cup.

The www.couriermail.com.au, the Gold Coast Bulletin, Rockhampton’s Morning Bulletin and News Corp affiliates will livestream the action from 9am – culminating in the Phil Hall Cup grand final between southern conference champions Palm Beach Currumbin SHS and Payne Cup winners St Brendan’s College Yeppoon, who beat Kirwan SHS.

As curtain-raisers the NRL Schoolboy Trophy Queensland grand final between St Augustine’s and Lockyer District, along with the Karyn Murphy Cup decider will feature.

Shalom College rugby league co-ordinator Neil Feather said it was wonderful for the Murphy Cup to be included on grand final day.

“Without this competition, our girls would not have games to prepare for and, therefore, would be lost to rugby league,’’ he said in praise of the NRL’s Amy Bock and Ian Kearton.

“We have so many more talented girls wanting to rugby league now, on the back of watching the NRLW and seeing our Firsts at Confraternity and the KMC state finals. I’ve gone from zero female players to 75 in two years.’’

So who will be some of the key Players to Watch, x-factor players who will help make their side tick?

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Keano Kini (Palm Beach Currumbin SHS)

The joint Justin Hodges Medal winner for Langer Trophy player of the year, the Gold Coast Titans signed year 11 student is both a running fullback and a ball-playing five-eight.

Palm Beach Currumbin SHS fullback Keano Kini. Picture: Liam Kidston.

Ryan Foran (PBC SHS)

Foran was the best left edge backrower in the home and away Langer Trophy series and rose to the occasion in the NRL Schoolboys Cup decider when his two tries took PBC SHS from a deficit to level-pegging against Marsden SHS.

Tom Weaver (PBC SHS)

A Player to Watch story is never complete unless the name Tom Weaver is attached to it.

A Gold Coast Titans recruit, he is a puppeteer who steers his team around and swings them into action off front foot ball delivered by wonderful dummy halves Oskar Bryant and Tona Nanu.

St Brendan’s forward Tane Kiriona.

Deine Mariner (PBC SHS)

St Brendan’s awesome foursome (from left) Blake Anders, Owen Pattie, Matthew Hill and Tane Kiriona.

The best schoolboy centre in Queensland, the Brisbane Broncos-signed Mariner has that touch of class about him which can tilt a match. He also works hard in defence, making him a nuisance for St Brendan’s to counter.

Matthew Hill (St Brendan’s)

The Brisbane Broncos-signed Hill entered the Aaron Payne Cup fresh off a stellar campaign for the Capras under 18’s Mal Meninga Cup side. His form was highlighted by his performance in the last minute semi final loss when he ran for over 200m and threatened the opposition line on many occasions. He is a balanced runner with speed and sharp late footwork

Tane Kiriona (St Brendan’s)

A relative unknown in rugby league circles prior to 2021, Kiriona has caught the attention of some influential people in the game this season. With his mid field dominance in this year’s Mal Meninga Cup, he continued this on throughout the Confraternity Shield and Aaron Payne Cup campaigns that followed.

A big mobile aggressive middle forward, Kiriona will be that strong presence holding up the middle third of the field. Look for him combining well with his fellow forward sidekick Noah Corcoran.

St Brendan’s captain Owen Pattie.

Owen Pattie (St Brendan’s)

Pattie stepped up and took the game by the horns when he snapped a late field goal in the dying seconds of SBC’s Aaron Payne Cup Grand Final victory over Kirwan High School last week.

A product of the remote Central Queensland town of Monto, he has been a part of the SBC boarding community since grade 8. He was named player of the tournament for SBC in this year’s Confraternity Shield.

Anne-Marie Ratu

Another multi-talented sportswoman who has represented Queensland in touch, rugby 7s and rugby league. She is a dangerous fullback who isn’t afraid to do the hard work as well.

Chantay Ratu

Sunny Gerrard (Keebra Park)

The school captain, Gerrard is a natural leader on and off the field. A South Coast and SEQ rugby league representative, she is a tough and uncompromising middle forward.

Hailee-Jay Ormond-Maunsell

The 18 year old who only arrived at Keebra this year from Melbourne, she is a devastating line runner that plays either second row or centre. She has been contacted by the Brisbane Broncos to be part of their NRLW squad.

IPSWICH SHS

Riley Jorgensen (Ipswich SHS)

The fast improving Ipswich SHS girls league program revealed an array of talent in 2021. Top of the list was Jorgensen five-eight who must install confidence in her side by the manner in which she conducted herself.

Also watch for her halfback Lynn Nielsen whom she has a combination with at both school and Met West level.

Wendy Toma and Tarleah Fisher-Pearson

Toma is a front rower and Fisher-Pearson a fullback, and both girls developed their play this season with the Ipswich Jets under 19s and during the Titans Cup. Fisher-Pearson said the main focus was gelling as a team and having fun together. “Rugby league has really helped me at school to be more focused and because I’m in year 12 this will be my last year competing in the Karyn Murphy Cup,’’ she said.

Toma said the Murphy Cup was a great competition. “It’s a tough competition that will help prepare you for other state wide competitions outside school, like the U19’s comp that was held at the beginning of 2021.”

Aiesha White

White is a young gun dummy half who will get her side moving forward with excellent passing and timely running.

The Shalom College senior girls players – with coach Antonio Kaufusi.

SHALOM COLLEGE

Hanahlin Whittard

Whittard is Shalom College’s most experienced player who regularly plays in Wide Bay representative teams. “Every team needs a member that ‘lives-and-breathes’ the game, and she is that for our girls,’’ said rugby league co-ordinaror Neil Feather.

Florence and Harmonie Fauid

The sisters come from Coconut Island in the Torres Straight. Florence has played for Peninsula at the state under 15’s titles in the past, before moving to Shalom College.

“They both possess natural ball playing ability and play-what-they-see well,’’ Feather said.

“Nine-a-side suits them perfectly and we look forward to seeing what they can produce against the best players in the state.’’

Mikala Lobegeier, Taylor Driver and Kasey Stone

“Makala is our captain and a typical lock forward in a 13 person game,’’ Feather said.

“She will be exceptionally busy in defence, working tirelessly for her team- a great natural leader from the front.

“Taylor is an exceptional touch player whom regularly represents CQ at the touch state titles. She is picking up the skills for rugby league well though and will looking to be involved as much as possible in attack.

Kasey Stone come to us from AFL and is part of the Gold Coast Suns academy. A natural athlete and competitor, she has developed into a half for our side- if she can get her running game together, it will put our girls on the front foot in most of our games.’’

KIRWAN SHS

Kirwan SHS is an entrenched Payne Cup powerhouse in schoolboys, but the school’s girls’ program was going from strength to strength.

Kirwan SHS will be in Wednesday’s state finals – just four years after starting its rugby league program.

Outstanding talents like Brandy Yallop – now an elite Australian football player – Lhylla Williamson, Montaya Hudson, Jammie-Lee Sarriman, Jayde Watson, Niquita Peters and Chloe Watson have all been a part of the girls rugby league evolution.

Theophelia Mosby-Nona was also a star at the Murphy Cup in 2019, and the school’s appearance at this year’s tournament highlights the girl power within the school’s league ranks.

St Brendan’s College open team after their Aaron Payne Cup semi-final win over Ignatius Park.

St Brendan’s College will forge its own piece of rugby league history on Wednesday.

For the first time, their teams will feature in the grand finals of both the Aaron Payne Cup and Cowboys Challenge in the same year.

St Brendan’s play Mercy College Mackay in the CC final at 10am and Kirwan State High in the APC final at 11am, with both games livestreamed on this website.

The First XIII booked their place in the APC decider by beating Ignatius Park 22-16 last week. Watch the replay here.

The CC team advanced with a 20-10 win over Emmaus College. Watch the replay here.

First XIII coach Scott Minto said it was a great achievement, one which was testament to the rugby league program at the school and the people involved in it.

St Brendan’s will play Mercy College Mackay in the Cowboys Challenge final on Wednesday.

He said his players were excited for their chance to claim the APC crown.

“I said to the boys last night that we’re not going up there to come second,” he said.

“We’ll go in with the same attitude that we did last week and really work hard.

“The first 10 to 15 minutes will set the tone, and we want to show plenty of intent and let them know we’re there to play.”

Kirwan took the honours 31-12 in their pool game, and Minto said it was that meeting that helped steel St Brendan’s defence.

“We know what to expect – big bodies running hard, especially early in the game,” he said.

“Our forward pack will do a good job with Tane Kiriona and Brock Hinds leading the way.

“Our edges are really strong, and we’ll get some opportunities late in the game with our centres and wingers.

“We’ve got to stick tight and stay connected. If we do that, we will go a long way towards winning.”

Matthew Hill. St. Brendans College

St Brendan’s First XIII squad

Matthew Hill:

Broncos contracted and improving with every outing in the fullback role. In his first full year at the back, he’s a genuine strike player on any play the ball and will catch any lazy defender napping with his speed, balance and skill.

Kongasau Nona:

Hailing from Thursday Island, he has electric speed and a high level of skill to match. Look for him taking on tired forwards out of dummy half on every set.

Blayden Dodd:

Blayden is athletically gifted and has the uncanny ability to beat his defender one on one. With a fend to rival ‘GI’, Doddy (as the boys call him) will be looking for some early ball to test the opposition in this one.

Blake Anders:

With NRL clubs starting to circle, Blake has been a real eye catcher in 2021. With his tall build and strong carries, he is a handful to contain with his ability to slip the pass to his winger in space becoming his stock play.

Mackenzie Nixon:

Recently crowned Queensland Country under-17 representative, Mack has improved his game 100 per cent in 2021. Strong carries out of the back field and good finishing has him stationed at the top of the try scoring list in the APC 2021.

Jackson Miller:

The Barcaldine junior brings a cool head and a sharp passing and kicking game to the team. His ability to show and go and beat opposition was a real feature at Confro 2021 and has continued deep into the APC in Term 3.

Owen Pattie. St Brendan’s College First XIII squad

Owen Pattie:

Captain of the side in 2021, Owen is a constant threat to teams by mixing up his game and testing defense lines out every set. A half who plays with tempo and good game management, he will be a key figure if Brendan’s are to go on and win the APC this year.

Tane Kiriona:

Fresh after inking a new deal with the Canberra Raiders, Tane has been a revelation in 2021. Tall, aggressive with unbelievable leg speed for a middle forward, he ticks almost every box and will be rising up the ranks in years to come.

Quinn Stover. St Brendan’s College First XIII squad

Quinn Stover:

He started the season on the bench and when starting hooker Will Lasker did his shoulder prior to Confro, not many knew what Quinn was fully capable of. He’s grown immensely in the past 10 weeks and has stamped his mark on this team moving into the penultimate game Wednesday.

Brock Hinds:

Another who has gained a contract in the NRL system in 2022, Brock has taken his game to the next level with his hard runs, strong defence and work off the ball impressing the Broncos High Performance staff. He will need to match the big forwards from Kirwan if Brendan’s are to get home.

Ben Charles:

Has been in the top three for Brendan’s consistently every week this year. With his work rate off the charts and his line running and defence clean-up unfailing, Ben has helped a great deal with getting the team through to this game. Look for his influence to be huge.

Kealhan O’Brien:

The Blackwater product is fast, agile and tough. He takes the hard carries and is always sniffing around, looking for the ball. Look for his combination with Miller on the right to fire in the grand final.

Noah Corcoran: A skilful, rangy lock who can pass like the best halves and hit like the best middles. A great link man to the halves, Noah is doing a great job of steering the middles around in 2021.

St Brendan’s celebrate their win in the Aaron Payne Cup semi-final. Picture: Matthew Forrest

Hoani Harris:

The youngest of the bunch at 16 – although you wouldn’t know it. Tough in both attack and defence, Hoani is renowned for his effort all round. He will play a big part in making sure the pressure stays on Kirwan throughout.

Filipe Buli:

Another up and comer in Year 11. Has grown in leaps and bounds this season. At 190cm and 98kg, he is the younger brother of 2019 First XIII player Ilami. Watch him tear into them when he’s unleashed after 15 minutes of this match-up.

Harrison Gray:

A member of the 2020 outfit, Harrison takes on a new role this year, coming off the bench and moving Owen Pattie up to nine during the half, which has paid dividends. His experience when it matters most will be drawn upon this Wednesday.

Sebastian Nona:

Another 16-year-old who has impressed the coaching staff with his natural game and power runs. He will feature plenty in the First XIII kit in the coming 12 months as he, too, is in Year 11 this year.

Kendrick Treadwell-Kendrick:

A wing/fullback who can cover other positions at a pinch. With a want to get the ball in his hands, Kendrick will be a positive influence wherever he is injected in this one.
