Two South Sydney development contract rookies will lead their respective state sides into today’s ARSSL national schoolboy grand final.

Queensland captain and halfback Jye Gray and NSW Combined High Schools’ skipper Tyrone Munro met each other for the first time the other day as junior Rabbitohs, but will be arch rivals on grand final day.

While the State of Origin decider may not take the field in Brisbane for another week, KommunityTV will bring you its version of the great rivalry in the Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League grand finals.

A smiling Munro said there would be “a bit of rivalry’’ given the history between the two states.

Queensland teams are 0-4 against NSW sides in recent weeks, but can the 18 years Maroons snap the losing streak against NSW teams in the decider?

The Maroons’ under 19s State of Origin teams (both men and women), the senior women and the senior men have all lost to Blues’ team recently, so the 18 years Queenslanders have a chance to restore state pride at Moreton Daily Stadium in a clash to be live streamed by KommunityTV at 2pm.

“Obviously it would be good to get one back on them after a couple of losses and hopefully we can get the job done and restore a bit of pride in the jersey,’’ said Queensland captain and halfback Jye Gray.

Queensland last won the competition in 2019 when future NRL stars like Reece Walsh, Sam Walker and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow strutted their stuff, and this time around Queensland have two players of similar impact – fullback Keano Kini (PBC SHS) and No.13 Karl Oloapu (Wavell SHS).

Gray said although players were from a variety of regions, the Queensland boys had gelled. “Everyone gets along which is why, up until today, we have been doing well.’’

Munro, a winger, said the pre-championship camp had worked wonders for his group and the team’s close bond had played a part in success so far.

“At our camp we all got to know the boys and our bonding has been a big thing. We have got to know each other’s strengths,’’ Munro said.

NSW CHS have a talent-laden line-up including Harrison Hassett, gun fullback Chevy Stewart, Roosters-signed half Cassius Tia and big Dylan Egan.

Although Kini and Oloapu threaten for Qld, the young Maroons are no two man band, with props Liam Le Blanc and Josiah Pahulu laying a foundation for Keebra Park SHS edge forwards Seth Nikotemo and the inform Arama Hau, while the tournament is yet to see wingers Tyreece Tait and Haizyn Mellars impact games due to earlier rain.

The under-15s decider, which will be broadcast live at 12.20pm, will feature a showdown of the Baby Blues as NSW CHS meet NSW CIS.

Future Sea Eagle and Combined Independent School flyer, Reilly Caswell, could be the man to break the Under-15s decider wide open with his raw pace.

The Knox Grammar student, who is also a national 400m track star, showed his express pace in a length of the field try to secure an extra-time win over Queensland and earn a spot in the decider.

The former Woolongong Collegians junior will not be alone in his efforts with NSW CIS also boasting the impressive Large brothers, Onitoni and Ashton, in their halves.

The Combined High School side’s quest for the Under-15 title will be spearheaded by Endeavour Sports High’s explosive backrower Kaden Garner, fullback Jayden Carter, Eels’ rookie Ali Karnib and fleet-footed touch football star Tomaka Berryman-Duff.

Future Eels playmaker stars to deliver NSW Combined Catholic Colleges ultimate glory in a thrilling battle of the Baby Blues.

NSW CHS have won the Under 15s battle of the blues by holding on to beat NSW CCC in an All Schools carnival thriller.

Led by Westfield Sports playmaker Alex Joseph Isdale, CHS survived a CCC comeback to claim an 18-16 victory.

A penalty goal slotted just three minutes from fulltime was all that separated the NSW’s rivals following their 50 minute fight.

In an all NSW under 15s blockbuster, NSW CHS burst out of the blocks to deliver an early blow to the Catholics with Lorima Rokosuka scoring in the 3rd minute.

Presented with a four on three, CHS No.6 Tamoko Berryman Duff fired a cut to put Rokosuka over in the corner.

The pain for CCC continued when CHS halfback Alex Joseph Isdale scored an individual try to make it a two try margin.

Down 10-0 after the early CHS onslaught, CCC scored before the break to make it a match.

NSW CHS opened the second half scoring when Lochlin Moses stormed over from close range to make it 16-6 following the conversion.

The Victoria Secondary Schools overwhelmed the NT Secondary Schools outfit at Redcliffe this afternoon.

The boys in navy blue won 36-nil, a scoreline they deserved but one which does not do justice to the effort of the young NT side.

Gigantic right edge forward Elijah Po Ching opened the scoring for Victoria with a ploughing run.

Left winger Parish Hunt then found the tryline after another right side raid, squeezing over in heavy traffic.

A stray kick then resulted in a turnover inside the Victorian half and five tackles later Indianason Fiaui was diving over next to the posts.

And when Finn Mackay produced a 15m left side pass to send Hunt loping in for his second try, Victoria’s lead had hit 20 points.

The cream rose to the top for the second successive day as the Large boys, Ashton and Onitoni, steered NSW Combined Independent Schools to a second successive victory – this time over a spirited ACT.

With a platform provided for them by their forwards, the brothers – five-eight Onitoni and hooker Ashton – let rip with their skills and speed to give their side a flystart on the way to a 46-14 win.

No.9 Ashton got the scoreboard ticking with an early try after a barnstorming charge by prop Christian Pasikala, then centre Heamasi Makasini crossed after Onitoni had gone left with a pass to his winger Reilly Caswell.

A third try by fullback Callum Grantham – following a probing run by Onitoni – resulted in an 18-nil led to NSW CIS.

But there was an ACT revival, with winger Jack Turner crossing after his centre Joshua Klobucar had fielded an attacking cross kick.

A booming sideline conversion, and another break, by fullback and ACT man of the match Cooper Johnston, then gave ACT further confidence.

An astute kick-chase effort and rousing ACT defence then added additional momentum to ACT’s recovery, but a counter attacking run by NSW fullback Grantham gave Onitoni Large room to put his winger Caswell, the NSW player of the match, across against the run of play.

Onitoni then laid on the first try of the second half for No.13 Tom McKenna, handing the side another try.

But despite being down 28-6, the ACT effort remained steadfast resulting in a beautiful try to centre Angus Durbidge after courageous charges by ACT prop Zildjian Tafili and flashes of enterprise by fullback Johnston.

ACT’s will was never better emphasised than when Jack Turner (Melrose High School) produced a great cover tackling effort on NSW CIS winger Reilly Caswell despite a lopsided scoreline.

Western Australia have survived a late scare on their way to an 18-16 win over the First Nations Goannas Invitational team on day three of the under 15 secondary schoolboy championships at Moreton Daily Stadium.

Goannas interchange player Sione Tonga scored a try wth six minutes remaining to narrow the gap to two points but the conversion attempt by Jack Talbott sailed narrowly wide.

Some valiant WA defence kept the Goannas at bay for what was left of the game. Izzy Gibuma was named man of the match for the Goannas while Jesse Inall took out the honour for the WA side.

DAY THREE PREVIEW: Brothers unite to guide the Independents

He’s too young for an NRL club to sign but 13-year-old Ashton Large still stole the show with a man-of-the-match performance at the Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League Championships at Redcliffe on Sunday.

Ashton and his 14-year-old brother, Onitoni, were the Batman and Robin of day two of the championships after elite performances in a 22-all draw against Queensland White in the under-15s.

The duo back up on Monday when NSW CIS face another big test, this time against ACT.

Four games are set for decision, all in the U15s, as Western Australia and ASSRL Goannas look to continue their winning form from Sunday.

Hooker Ashton beat his older brother to the man-of-the-match award on Sunday, but it must have been a blanket finish, so well did five-eight Onitoni perform for his side.

Onitoni (The Scots College) has been signed by Wests Tigers but his brother is too young to pen a contract with an NRL club with 15 the age players can sign.

However Ashton was not too young to impress onlookers as he starred against rivals two years his senior. It was water off a duck’s back because he has always played up in his age group alongside Onitoni.

“When we were young, he always played up with me,’’ Onitoni said. “He has been dummy half, I have been halfback.

“It has been so much easier having him there, us being brothers.’’

Ashton said playing with Onitoni always raised his confidence.

“It really helps having him on my side and it gives me confidence, and we also have combinations. We might have a little trick play we can do out on the field.’’

Ashton said under duress, if he hears his brother’s voice, he will know to go to that side of the field either to run himself or to deliver the ball to Onitoni.

“I will skip that way and try and get a play-the-ball for him.

“Ashton said playing in his first NSW side with his older brother was “really special’’.

Queensland Under 15s coach Chris Little has revealed that a video chat from Tom Deardon helped inspire his baby Maroons to a first up win over NSW.

On a day of domination for Queensland with the Under 18s flogging the ACT in the other match, the All Schools rugby league carnival began in Redcliffe with the Maroons outlasting NSW CHS to win 10-6 in a game that included a send-off.

Speaking after playmaker’s Marley McLaren and Braithen Scott combined to deliver his team a first up win, Little said his star halves were inspired by a call from North Queensland ace Deardon.

“We had Tommy Deardon do a video for us while we were in camp,” Little said.

“And I think the boys got a lot out of it and learned a few tips of him. I think the halves were very good today. They are both a little different but they combine really well. Their footy IQ is amazing and they really led the way.”

Following a scrappy first half that was marred by errors made in the wet, Queensland scored two second half tries to set-up the win.

Led by five-eight McLaren, Queensland were forced into a fight when winger Cohen Dittman was sent off for making a mid-air tackle on NSW fullback Jayden Carter.

“The judiciary will meet to determine what step to take next,” Little said.

“They will review the footage and then make a decision. I am not sure where we stand there but I am proud of the boys for holding NSW with 12 players. They did whatever it took to get the win.

While he admitted it was not pretty, Little was happy with the first up performance.

“It didn’t go the way we planned but we got the job done,” said Little.

“We are pretty happy with the performance given the conditions and that it was our first game. I think both teams managed to play some good footy once they composed themselves.”

Queensland outgunned the ACT in the second and final match of the day.

Led by Titans-signed Queensland schoolboys fullback Keano Kini, the Queensland 18s opened their account with a 58-0 win over the ACT.

New Zealand-born Kini, wearing Titans-blazing blue boots, is one of the Gold Coast’s next generation players who gives hope to suffering fans that the tide will turn at the Robina-based club.

After being spotted by an astute Titans’ scout, of all things, playing touch football in 2020 in his homeland, Kini then moved to Palm Beach Currumbin SHS in 2021 where he helped the champion league school to the Phil Hall Cup Queensland schools state title.

The boys from the nation’s capital have been handed what is billed as the toughest assignment of the tournament to open the Australian schoolboys nationals, but they aren’t running scared.

The ACT Under-18s side will face off against host state, and reigning ASSRL champions Queensland, to open the tournament on Saturday afternoon.

Owen Hromow could be key to the success of the ACT team.

For coach Ash Barnes, it is an opportunity for his side to prove themselves as the dark horses of the nationals.

The clash, which will be the second of an opening day double header, will be exclusively live streamed by KommunityTV as part of our comprehensive coverage of the tournament.

“When we got handed the draw and saw it was Queensland on day one, we knew it was a tough assignment, they won the last championships in 2019,” Barnes said.

“We aren’t shying away from it, we are excited by it. That is what schoolboys’ league is all about, testing yourself against the best opposition. What better than Queensland in Queensland?

“We have a lot of guys that have played junior reps in Harold Matts (for the Raiders) that had a really successful campaign, they have played at a strong level. They are ready for this challenge.”

The ACT side won’t have to look far for inspiration on the field with co-captains Owen Hromow and Regan Carr two of the top talents coming out of Canberra.

Both players have proven they have the respect of their peers with Hromow named the Raiders Player’s Player in the SG Ball Cup this season while Carr took out the award for the Harold Matts’ side.

The pair have also been hardened by a tough winter playing among men in the Canberra Raiders Cup first grade competition.

Barnes, who coaches 12 of the ACT’s 20-man squad at Erindale College, said the strength of the bond in his side would stand the test of the week in Redcliffe.

“We have five guys playing first grade in Canberra currently,” he said.

“That is another thing, they are playing against men each week who are big and strong. Coming up against these guys (Queensland), in terms of physicality, shouldn’t be daunting for them.”

All Saints, Maitland climbed back off the canvas to draw 10-10 with Farrer as both teams picked up their first points of this year’s NRL Schoolboys Cup.

All Saints College has kept their Peter Mulholland Cup finals hopes alive after they escaped from the furnace of Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School with a solitary point.

A penalty goal to five-eighth Ashton Farrell in the final minutes levelled the scores at 10-10 with both sides unable to be split after a gripping 60 minutes.

Farrer had only kicked their own penalty goal two minutes earlier, and looked likely to clinch glory off the back of a dominant performance from front-row pairing Oliver Sykes and captain Will Woods.

But it was the wily efforts of All Saints College halfback Fletcher Thompson, who scored the only try of the second half, that pulled off the unlikely escape.

Thompson opted to take a quick tap in the final minutes and caught two Farrer defenders inside the 10 minutes. It forced the referee to send both to the bin and gave the visitors their shot to level the clash.

It was a see-sawing clash from the opening whistle to the last, but with the might of the Farrer supporters on the sideline, All Saints will be as good as winners on their bus ride back home to the Hunter.

The result took nothing away from the efforts of Farrer, who overturned an opening round 64-point loss to Patrician Brothers Fairfield into a grinding draw in front of a passionate crowd.

“She was a bit of a hard one out there, it felt like it was back and forth the whole game,” Woods said.

“It wasn’t the worst result and we ground it out to the last minute with only 11 blokes. It wasn’t the best result we could have hoped for but to have the crowd was great. It is amazing running out of the tunnel, they are cheering your name and they didn’t let up all game.

“We wouldn’t have gotten close to that result if it wasn’t for them.

A result like this gives a lot of confidence for the boys. We got smashed in the first round and the boys didn’t want to do that again, especially in front of the whole school. This was a big turnaround.”

Farrer had started the game on top, obviously fired up by the noise and excitement on the sidelines. The home side exploded out of the blocks and touched down through barnstorming backrower Logan Spinks within the opening 10 minutes.

An intercept try against the run of play for five-eighth Jordan Hamlin pushed Farrer two tries clear on the scoreboard and they threatened to run away with the contest.

But it was Thompson who masterminded the All Saints revival with a brilliant cut-out pass to send Lachlan Hickson over in the corner just before halftime before he levelled the scores after the break.

They are missing two of their most experienced leaders and driving into the furnace of Tamworth, but All Saints College are far from backing down from their toughest assignment of the season.

All Saints will make one of the toughest road trips of the Peter Mulholland Cup on Wednesday, when they face off against fellow country football institution, Farrer Memorial Agricultural School in Tamworth.

The game between the two regional rivals will be live streamed exclusively on KommunityTV at 11am, Wednesday.

It is an away trip only made tougher for All Saints with the exclusion of representative duo Myles Martin and Kaleb Garvie, who will both set their sights on the Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League Championships in Redcliffe.

But All Saints College head of sport, Elliott Plank, was adamant his troops were excited for the opportunity as they fight to keep their finals dreams alive.

He has also tipped one of the school’s future leaders to take on the challenge personally and stand tall in the face of adversity.

“It is always a challenge going to Farrer, we are both country schools from proud league towns,” Plank said.

“We will be inexperienced in the front row but our boys are really enthusiastic. We see it as a challenge and the boys are really excited to take the challenge head on.

“There is a couple of boys that have played in the side since Year 10 and we are earmarking them for leadership. We have Khynan Butler and Joe Green, it is a good opportunity to see where they are at and can take the team under their wing.

“They are natural leaders already. It should be a natural progression for those boys to step into those roles.”

Both sides will be desperate for a win after suffering tough first-round losses.

Farrer failed to score a point in their one-sided loss to Patrician Brothers, Fairfield but will have an extra player on the field in the form of a boisterous home crowd.

It is a tradition for every student to be sideline for the school’s home games, and coach Ethan Sherlock said he was excited to witness it from the sideline for the first time.

“We spoke (on Monday) about what it means to play at home. The boys are excited to have the home crowd there, it is a chance to play in front of their mates and in front of the whole school,” Sherlock said.

“(The players) grow another leg because of it, they find another level.

“We are limping through. We have been knocked around with the flu and have copped a few injuries. We are light on.

“It was a tough first game but the boys really responded well. We know where we are at and what we are up against.”

The son of rugby league legend Brad Fittler, Zach is already bigger than his famous father at 15.

A backrower with uncanny resemblance to “Freddy”, Zach starred for the Roosters this year in the Harold Mathews competition and was selected in the Under 16’s City team.

Zach is still eligible to play Harold Mathews next year but may be fast tracked into the SG Ball.

Selected in the CIS NSW side, Taukamo will go fulltime with the Sharks at the end of the year.

A powerful ball runner, Taukamo could also force his way into the NRL as a winger or centre although he is a natural fullback.

Hills Sports High have stormed their way into the next round of the NRL Schoolboy Cup, after a clinical 44-10 win over Endeavour Sports High at Ringrose Park on Wednesday.

“It was great, we had a couple of our players out but still managed to find our combos and we gelled really well,” halfback Cassius Tia said.

The game opened with a massive Origin-like hit up, which saw players from both sides leave the field, before Endeavour scored off a great backline play orchestrated by fullback Chevy Stewart and finished by second-rower Koby Douglas in the corner.

But the home side responded before Endeavour could take a breath, almost instantly taking the lead.

It didn’t take long for Hills’ crafty halfback, Cassius Tia, to make his presence felt in the contest, scoring an impressive try through the middle of the park.

Panthers SG Ball young gun and Hills centre Peteru Pritchard attacked Endeavour’s right edge to score a great individual try.

On the stroke of halftime, Tia setup Levi Smith-Mairiri perfectly in the corner to extend his side’s lead to 22-4.

Up by 18 points at the break, Tia said coach Scott Jones’ message was to “keep defending and working together, everything will fall off the back of that.”

Endeavour needed a strong start to the second half but were overwhelmed by the dynamic duo of Tia and fullback Blake Metcalfe, who combined through Endeavour’s defensive line for a asecond try to Tia.

The halfback struck again, setting up winger and fellow Rooster SG Ball representative Siaosi Kaliti in the corner from a high ball.

Endeavour’s fullback Chevy Stewart caught the Hills defence napping and scored from dummy half.

But the story of the day was Tia, who bagged a hat-trick.

But the humble halfback gave all the credit to his teammates.

“It was a great feeling, but I have to give full credit to the boys, our middles worked hard and let us play off the back of that,” he said.

PREVIEW: Endeavour and Hills not thinking too far ahead

After knocking off the defending champions and arguably the powerhouse side of the Peter Mulholland Cup in the opening round, Endeavour Sports High could be forgiven for thinking ahead to the pointy end of the season.

But coach Brad Kelly has warned, any fantasies of what is to come could remain just that if they don’t stay on task this week against Hills Sports High.

Endeavour was impressive out of the gates, notching a hard fought two-point win over Patrician Brothers Blacktown, but it was not a season-defining success according to Kelly.

The coach has good reason to be tough on his troops, as they face a Hills Sports High side not only riding a wave of momentum from their own upset win in the first round but also bolstered by one of the more lethal one-two combinations in the competition.

“The pool games are good to win, it is good for morale and good for the team, but it is more important to make sure the team is building toward the back end of the year and is firing when we play the quarter-finals,” Kelly said.

“It was great to win (against Patrician Brothers), but we don’t put that much focus on what they can achieve this year this early on.”

Hills Sports were equally impressive in the way they ran over the top of Westfields Sports High in the opening round, and will be excited for the return of strike playmaker Cassius Tia from injury.

Tia will aim to reignite his slick partnership with fellow half Blake Metcalfe in the mouth-watering clash at Ringrose Park on Wednesday.

The pair have both come off dominant seasons in the SG Ball Cup with the Roosters (Tia) and Raiders (Metcalfe) and will be determined to find that form on the field.

“It’ll be great to have him (Cassius Tia) back, he’s an SG Ball grand finalist at the roosters and was in the NSW CHS team,” Hills coach Scott Jones said.

“We’re confident in our preparation, the boys have been great, getting through injury-free and we’re getting a few boys back.

“We’re excited about the clash, Endeavour are an extremely well-coached team that play with really good shape and we’re going to have our hands full trying to shut their player down.”

Westfields halves Lachlan Galvin and Blaize Talagi have sent a shockwave through the Peter Mulholland Cup, spearheading a dominant win over rivals Patrician Brothers Blacktown.

Any pre-game thought of Patrician Brothers success in recent meetings between the schools was obliterated at Bluebet Stadium as Westfields slick backline and barnstorming forward pack notched a half century in the 54-10 win.

It was billed as a heavyweight bout, but if it was in a ring, the towel would have been well and truly thrown by the end of the first half as Westfields dominated their arch-rivals.

It was the school’s representative players who stood tall tearing up the middle of the park and exploiting some lacklustre defence from the Patrician Brothers middles.

Da Silva scored a double backing up out of dummy-half while Talagi played a key role in most of the visitors four-pointers as they stormed out to a 22-point lead at halftime, before going on with the game after the break.

Fellow NSW CHS representative Solomone Saukuru showed why selectors have locked him in for the ASSRL National Championships in Redcliffe next week, leaving defenders in his wake with every charging run.

wer scored a barnstorming try in the first half and worked hard off the outside shoulder of impressive halfback Lachlan Galvin.

The Westfields Sports High left-edge proved near unstoppable in the opening half, breaking down their opposition with hard running and smart lines.

While Patrician Brothers showed signs of fight at the back end of the first half and even started the second on the front foot with a slick try to backrower Jordan Faleono, they couldn’t go with their hot-handed rivals who ran away with the contest.

PREVIEW: The simmering feud between two NRL Schoolboys giants

Don’t let their public affection for each other fool you – the rivalry between Patrician Brothers Blacktown and Westfields Sports High is definitely filled with fire and brimstone.

It’s there, hidden among the pre-game pleasantries and cliches like “focus on our own roles”, and “we just need to keep building towards finals”.

The simmering feud between Patrician Brothers and Westfields will write a new chapter at Penrith’s Bluebet Stadium on Wednesday, and KommunityTV will be your only way to watch the action live and exclusive on The Daily Telegraph website.

The friction is evident when Patrician Brothers supremo Greg Beacroft makes mention of the current record, which, according to him, is 5-1 for the Blacktown powerhouse, stretching back to 2018.

It’s also obvious when Westfields coach Troy Weeden responds to those claims by suggesting the results don’t faze him, and he “has bigger fish to fry”.

It is a competitive fire between two schools that has become almost synonymous with the Peter Mulholland Cup over the past decade.

It is the Rumble in the Jungle of schoolboys rugby league.

A heavyweight battle that has evolved over the years.

A rivalry that has been borne out of two sides who were the top teams and played like it every time they met, whether there was a competition on the line or not.

“The thing about Westfields and us, the other teams don’t want to play us,” Beacroft said. “That includes through the juniors, so when we get to play each other, it a great thing.

“The kids know each other and they respect us and we respect them. They are very professional like we are, it is all very polite and serious.

“The competition between the schools is quite close. Out of the last six games we have beaten them five times but in all of those games at various stages both teams have been on top.”

The latest battle will take on a different shape on Wednesday, with both powerhouses coming off shock first round defeats.

Patrician Brothers were shocked by a plucky Endeavour Sports High in the opening round, while Westfields were run over the top of by a Hills Sports High side that many have picked out as the competition’s early frontrunners.

“We will have a couple of changes, we were fairly happy with how we played but our execution let us down a bit,” Weeden said.

“We are both coming off losses so it will be a big game.

“We go into every game wanting to win. It is important for (the players) to have that mindset. We will more than likely play (Patrician Brothers) down the track again so a win here would be good.

“Hills get a bit of confidence out of beating us in the opening round, and confidence is a big thing. We need to get back on the horse a little bit.”

Beacroft had a similar message for the Patrician Brothers side as they look to regain momentum heading into the mid-season break in the Peter Mulholland Cup.

“Our kids hadn’t had one game together all year and only two training runs due to the wet weather,” he said. “It is all about momentum and building confidence. We expect an improved performance.”

“At this stage you mainly focus on what we can control, focus on our own roles on the field.”

We asked both coaches to cut through their squads and reveal the surprise packets for them heading into Wednesday’s blockbuster clash at Bluebet Stadium.

The typical workhorse middle forward has made a strong return from a syndesmosis injury he suffered at the end of the junior representative season, and showed true character and grit in the loss against Hills Sports High.
