Westfields smash PBC

Schoolboys Cup live stream: Palm Beach Currumbin v Westfields Sports High, national final

Westfields are the Australian Schoolboys champions after producing an opening 40 minutes that gave Palm Beach Currumbin no chance of recovery.

Watch a full replay of Westfields SHS v Palm Beach Currumbin.

The team who have made come-from-behind victories their specialty all season didn’t need the inspiration of a comeback this time.

Westfields saved their best until last, racing out to a 26-0 halftime lead, then withstanding a brief comeback and finally charging home to put the seal on one of the most dominant National Schoolboys final victories of all time.

With five eighth Lachlan Galvin pulling the strings, Westfields hammered Gold Coast school Palm Beach Currumbin 38-4 to claim their second national title.

GALVIN STEPS UP TO INSPIRE BIG WESTFIELDS SUCCESS

Westfields coach Troy Weeden said he was ‘relieved’ at the result.

“The boys knew what they needed to do,” Weeden said.

“Having that extra week to recover after the final really helped the boys so they could just go in and focus on their football.”

Galvin’s performance secured him both the player of the match and player of the season awards and Weeden said he wasn’t surprised with the accolades.

“Lachie Galvin did what Lachie Galvin does,” he said.

“He’s a competitor, he’s a winner and he showed that in the first half particularly.”

Galvin was on fire in the opening half, scoring two tries as Westfields raced out to a 12-0 lead just over 10 minutes into the match.

He would have scored a third shortly after following a strong run from Will Craig, but fumbled the offload.

Dion Paranthoiene-Williams added another try for Westfields in the 22nd minute, followed by a try right on the buzzer from Sosefo Finau.

Five goals from Roy Quiroz-Mapasua, including a late penalty goal, gave Westfields the unassailable halftime break.

The Queenslanders finally put themselves on the scoreboard to open the second half with Credence Donovan scoring following solid offensive pressure from his team.

Westfields seemed to lack the same power they had in the first half and fumbled multiple opportunities.

But Galvin rallied his troops as he brilliantly teamed with Craig to set up a try for Hosea Kedzlie with 10 minutes remaining.

Markuzz Ofanoa and Saint Fuitimau added two more tries late on to put an emphatic note on the success.

NSW champions Westfields will put their undefeated record this season on the line, after clinching the Peter Mulholland Cup title last month in a thrilling finish against rivals Palm Beach Currumbin.

It hasn’t been the smoothest of roads for the Sydneysiders, who have had to fight their way from behind on the scoreboard in all but one of their games this season.

While their slow starts have threatened to hamper Westfields, the young squad possesses a confidence and belief that they have the ability to win games from any position.

“We know we can do it no matter what position we are in the game,” Westfields coach Troy Weeden said.

“You only have to win it in the 60th minute and that is what we did (in the state final).”

Palm Beach Currumbin has endured a fightback of its own this season, after winning only two of its first five matches in the Langer Trophy.

Palm Beach Currumbin coach Tim Maccan will have confidence in his troops that they can shut down their rivals offence much like they did to St Patrick’s College in the 28-0 shutout in the Phil Hall Cup decider.

Peter Mulholland Cup Semi Finals

Peter Mulholland Cup semifinals live stream:

Patties Blacktown v St Dominic’s, Erindale v Westfields

While Westfields were class under pressure, they will have to be at their very best in the final if Patties Blacktown produce a repeat of their NRL Schoolboys Cup semi masterpiece. Relive the action.

Watch a full replay of Westfields Sports v Erindale College.

Westfields held off a tenacious challenge from Erindale to set up a Peter Mulholland Cup grand final showdown with Patrician Brothers Blacktown next Wednesday.

Lachlan Galvin was one of the stars of the show, scoring a try and contributing to multiple others to help his side to come from behind to beat the Canberra-based school 22-16 at Campbelltown Stadium.

It was the second year in a row Erindale have gone out at ther semifinal stage.

Westfields’ Roy Quiroz-Mapusa said getting to the grand final is an incredible feeling.

“What an adrenaline rush,” he said.

Lachlan Galvin dives in for a Semi Final Try (Photo : Steve Montgomery)

“We just had to keep believing in each other.

“There’s a reason Erindale got to the finals, but I had full confidence in the boys.”

Erindale gained the advantage early, with Olli Bolatagici benefiting from a Jonah Anderson kick to claim the first try.

Australian Schoolboy Xavier Cacciotti doubled the advantage for Erindale soon after, and a perfect two from two from Sam Gash gave the Canberra side a solid 12-0 lead early on.

Westfields coach Troy Weeden admitted the two early tries was concerning, but the boys didn’t let it impact their confidence.

“To go 12-0 down made me nervous,” Weeden said.

“Our mentality changed after that, we know we can score points when we are in the area, but we just weren’t there enough.”

Galvin was the first to reduce the deficit with a try followed by Brycen Anae Roberts and Sosefo Finau in quick succession to hand Westfields a 16-12 lead heading into the break.

Westfields made it four unanswered tries 10 minutes into the second half as Heith Pritchard powered through from dummy half for the try. A third successful conversion for Quiroz-Mapusua put the side 10 points in front.

Erindale’s Bolatagici was able to claw back some points off the back of an impressive run from Mathias Tomuli-Ah-Koui, but an unsuccessful conversion from Gash kept Erindale just out of reach.

The pro-Erindale crowd were fired up and a sin-bin for Westfields Markuzz Ofanoa only made them louder.

But Westfields held their nerve.

Super Patties Blacktown turn in semifinal special

Patrician Brothers Blacktown have shocked the NRL Schoolboys competition by demolishing the previously undefeated St Dominic’s 32-0 to secure a spot in next week’s grand final.

Fullback Wilson De Courcey called the result and performance ‘amazing’.

“Just crazy,” he said.

“I wasn’t expecting that scoreline, I thought it would be a closer game.

“But we’ve been aiming for this since the start of the season and to get this result is amazing.”

The opening few minutes were very physical with neither side giving an inch.

Marcellus Iakopo got the scoring underway early, dodging past St Dom’s defence before Thomas Epere doubled the lead soon after, following a kick from De Courcey.

St Dom’s were plagued by errors close to the line and the Pats defence was unyielding.

Australian Schoolboy De Courcey grabbed a try of his own just before halftime to extend the lead to 18-0 and it was a long way back for St Dom’s.

Watch a full replay of Patrician Brothers Blacktown v St Dominic’s College.

St Dom’s were gifted a much-needed advantage midway through the second half when Patties player Langa Tokuafu was sent to the sin-bin for a late tackle.

De Courcey said going a man down was frustrating.

“It’s little things like that, discipline, that we really need to sort out,” De Courcey said.

“If it was a closer game, that could have really affected us.”

St Dom’s though couldn’t break through. The closest they got was when a powerful charge from Jack Attard was thwarted by the defence right on the line.

Even down a player, Patties were unstoppable.

A brilliant run from Jaxon Edgar was rewarded as Jack Nicholas found the tryline, and co-captain Finau Latu added a second try in as many minutes to put St Dom’s out of their misery.

Patties’ confidence only grew from there as Nicholas picked up his second try of the match for a stunning 32-0 lead.

PREVIEW

The grand finalists from 2022 may be gone, but there is certainly no doubting the quality of this year’s Peter Mulholland Cup final four.

Patties Fairfield went out in the group stages while Hills were quarterfinal victims, but in Westfields Sports, Erindale College, St Dominic’s and Patrician Brothers Blacktown, there are four teams in peak form and all are capable of winning the title on their best day.

And the semifinal draw only adds to the intrigue.

Catch all of the action from Campbelltown Stadium LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on KommunityTV from 12:30pm on Wednesday, along with coverage of the NRL Schoolgirls Cup semi-finals from 10am. See the full draw below.

Westfields boast a four-game unbeaten run as they prepare for a match-up with Erindale.

Winger Will Craig has been one of the stars of the show, scoring 10 tries in those four games.

FOOTBALL FACTORIES: EVERY AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLBOY OF THE LAST DECADE

“He’s just so strong,” coach Troy Weeden said after Westfields’ 52-6 quarterfinal demolition of All Saints Maitland.

“He’s good at the art, everything he does is just superb and he gets us out of a lot of trouble.”

Australian schoolboy Lachlan Galvin has also been pivotal to Westfields’ success this year and Weeden praised the No.6’s ability to ‘always scoring tries, or contribute to them.’

While heading into the semifinals with plenty of momentum, Weedon conceded there were a few areas he wanted his team to pick up in.

“We need to fix our possession with the ball and control overall,” he said.

“As long as they put on a good performance and look after themselves we’ll be in with a shot.”

RELIVE ALL THE QUARTERFINAL ACTION HERE

Erindale’s quarterfinal clash against Endeavour Sports High School was ‘a bit of a weird game’, according to coach Ashley Barnes.

They eventually pulled off a 28-24 golden point win to reach the semifinals for the second year in a row. Last year they were knocked out in a thriller by Hills.

Barnes said he’s not underestimating the challenge Westfields will pose.

“If we’re as ill disciplined as we were against Endeavour, we’re going to have a really tough game,” Barnes said.

“They’re a powerful side with some really good players there, so we’ll really need to tidy up our game.

“I think if we just focus on us we’ll be really competitive.”

Jack Nicholas scored four tries in the quarterfinals.

In the other game, Patrician Brothers Blacktown have suddenly found a winning formula and head into their clash with St Dominic’s College feeling good about their prospects.

Their 64-6 win over Victorian University Secondary College in the quarterfinals featured an incredible 12 tries, four of which came from Jack Nicholas.

Nicholas said the result was a testament to how well the team are working together now after they fixed the mistakes that plagued them throughout the competition.

“We’re spreading the ball really well, our defence is really good,” Nicholas said after the quarterfinal win.

“Those four tries came from my teammates, we were just strong as a team and hopefully that takes us all the way.”

With St Dom’s going into the clash without yet losing a match in the competition, Nicholas said it’ll be a really tough battle.

“It’ll be a hard game, they’re a good team,” he said.

“It’s always tough when we play Dom’s but we’ll get back to training, work hard and give it a good crack.”

St Doms have been impressive form all year.

St Dom’s struggled with discipline issues during their 26-18 win over Hills Sports, letting in three tries in the second half and having Jack Ewer sent to the sin bin for a high tackle after looking comfortable in the opening half.

“We just switched off,” coach Kyle Churchill said.

“We weren’t cohesive as a group both in defence and in attack, and it took its toll.”

Hills win last minute thriller

Peter Mulholland Cup live stream: Hills Sports face Patrician Brothers, Blacktown in big gun match-up

The search for a first win of 2023 goes on for Patrician Brothers, Blacktown after Hills Sports down to pull off an impressive NRL Schoolboys Cup win. Relive the action. Check out the photos.

Watch a full replay as Hills Sports v Patrician Brothers Blacktown.

An electric atmosphere in what was one of the matches of the tournament so far resulted in a stunning come-from-behind victory for Hills Sports High School.

Last year’s runners-up didn’t have the lead until the final minutes of the game when Lincoln Fletcher expertly guided over two penalty goals under pressure for a 16-12 win.

Fletcher said he felt ‘relief’ seeing them both go through.

“I’ve never had a moment like that before,” Fletcher said.

Hills have now won two out of two.

It was quite the comeback for last year’s runners up.

“But I knew I had to take my time and it turned out well in the end there.”

The scores were locked at 0-0 for most of the first half, with both sides frequently coming up short on their attacking moves.

Pats Blacktown broke the deadlock in the 24th minute, with Tyson Sangalang pushing through to the tryline for the first points of the game.

Heinz Lemoto added to the lead minutes later and two perfect conversions from Dylan Brettle gave Pats a solid 12-0 buffer heading into halftime.

Fletcher said coach Scott Jones didn’t mince his words at the break.

“Copped it at halftime,” Fletcher said.

“We just weren’t to our standard, the boys knew we had to dig deep.”

Hills came out after the break determined and it didn’t take them long to halve their deficit thanks to a try from Lorenzo Talatania, which was expertly converted by Fletcher.

Talatania was instrumental in their second as well, dodging Pats defenders before a brilliant offload to Matt Aitchison levelled the scores 12-12 late in the match.

Hills were gifted two late penalties from Pats’ indiscretions, with Fletcher once again showing his worth and converting both.

Hills will face Westfields Sports High School in their final pool match to determine who takes top spot of the seeded pool, but Fletcher said the preparation will be the same as any other game.

“We’ll go back to training, do our individual stuff,” he said.

“And hopefully when we take on Westfields, we’ll be up for it.”

PREVIEW

After last year’s heroics, Hills Sports coach Shane Jones obviously has high standards.

Pipped at the post in last year’s NRL Schoolboys grand final, Hills began 2023 with a 36-16 demolition of Endeavour Sports High, but it wasn’t enough to impress Jones.

Hills Sports, who next face Patrician Brothers, Blacktown on Wednesday, were far from the finished product, according to the coach.

“We’ve done a fair bit of review and identified some areas we need to be a lot better in,” Jones said.

The match will be available to stream LIVE on KommunityTV from midday at Ringrose Park as part of a blockbuster day of matches, including reigning champions Patrician Brothers, Fairfield taking on Illawarra Sports High School.

Patties’ season got off to a disappointing start, going down to Westfields Sports, who produced an outstanding come-from-behind victory in the second half.

But Jones was wary of the Patties threat, even declaring ‘they are the favourites’ for the big second round match.

“With the team that they have, they are going to be hard to beat” he said.

Na’oia Tofaeano scored a double for Hills in their opener against Endeavour.

“I thought they were the better team for most of that game against Westfields but didn’t get the result, so I know they’re going to be hungry.

“We need to just make sure we stop their roll through the middle, it was an area we were quite poor at with Endeavour.”

Jones missed the last game against Endeavour due to illness, and assistant coach Mitchell Lewis had similar sentiments after the match.

“If we want to be really serious about this competition, we can’t be conceding 18 points every week,” Lewis said.

Patties add another half century

Illawarra SHS host Patrician Brothers Fairfield

Peter Mulholland Cup live stream: Illawarra Sports High host Patrician Brothers, Fairfield in big match-up

That’s over 100 points in two games now for the defending NRL Schoolboys champions who have set their sights on a pivotal showdown with Erindale next month.

Watch a full replay as Illawarra Sports v Patrician Brothers Fairfield.

Patrician Brothers, Fairfield have blown Illawarra off the park in a 58-10 demolition at Sid Parrish Oval.

The defending premiers were simply the hungrier of the two sides, overpowering Illawarra with their intensity and strong post-contact metres all game.

Defensively as well Patties were resolute, unlike the Illawarra who will be kicking themselves for a number of costly missed tackles.

Lock forward Bailey Myers, who picked up a double, was pleased with his side’s attitude throughout the match.

“The boys played really well considering we had a few out injured,” Myers said.

“We stuck to our plan and got the job done.”

Myers highlighted the efforts of fill-in halfback Brandon Navarro as crucial to his side’s success.

The workrates of Patties second rowers Nevaeh Pritchard and Jezaiah Funa-Luta were second to none, both heavily involving themselves and making some tough carries through the middle of the park.

Hooker Zaidas Muagututia had the ball on a string all days as he picked up an impressive four assists, twice to lock Myers and twice to rampaging interchange forward Livai Saukuru, the last of which was a beautiful flick pass for the highlight reel.

Junior Fagelele picked up an excellent solo try from centre, breaking through a hole down the right flank with a mean dummy and racing half the field to score.

Skilful five-eighth Chad Daniels, highlighted by coach Frank Pritchard as one to watch, also got on the scoresheet and picked up an assist to Ratu Cayuqueo.

It wasn’t all gloom for the Illawarra, with both wingers Ben Kami and Ben Binene finishing tries in opposite corners to break the Pattie’s defence for the first time this year.

Overall though, a convincing win for Patrician Brothers Fairfield who piled on 11 tries and remain strong contenders on this year’s competition.

PREVIEW

Patrician Brothers, Fairfield aren’t getting caught up in scorelines.

Patties picked up right where they left off in 2022 with their opening game 56-0 demolition of Matraville.

Their next opponent, Illawarra Sports High, on the other hand, were totally outplayed by Erindale, going down 38-8.

Despite the massive round one points discrepancy, the defending NRL Schoolboys champions are wary of the dangers Illawarra possess, particularly their ‘middles and edges’.

Patrician Brothers coach Frank Pritchard identified the strength of his spine players as big contributors to their productivity in attack in the first round, namely five-eighth Chad Daniels who had a super opening round performance.

“The confidence we showed early last week was great,” he said.

“We went out with the intention of trying to be defensively really strong to start the game, which we were, and ended up coming away with a big scoreline.”

But Pritchard believes there’s still room for his side to improve if they want to retain their crown in 2023.

“We had a few too many set incompletions for our liking, especially after scoring a try,” Prichard said.

Patties were great in both defence and attack against Matraville

“Luckily we were good defensively and we weren’t punished for this.”

Illawarra struggled to get the ball into attacking areas against a resolute Erindale side last week, but Pritchard knows his side will have to be at their best.

“We watched their game – we know we have to focus on stopping their middles and their edges,” Pritchard said.

One such middle that stood out for Illawarra last week was damaging front rower Palu Tuasala who was proving difficult to handle even for a solid defensive side like Erindale.

As for the edges, Harry Wililo has the x-factor to do damage from centre, as he showed with one of his side’s tries against Erindale.

“If we let them get to work, we could be in for a tough afternoon.”

Don’t miss out on the headlines from Rugby League Live Stream. Followed categories will be added to My News.

Endeavour Sports High School has produced a nail-biting 20-14 victory against Patrician Brothers Blacktown in a NRL Schoolboys top-tier showdown on Wednesday.

In a match between two powerhouses of schoolboy football, it was Blacktown who opened the scoring through blockbusting second-rower Jordan Faleono.

But Endeavour were quick to fight back with a four pointer from Dragons’ Harold Matthews blockbusting forward Cyrus Stanley-Traill.

.

But just before half time, co-captain Matt Arthur sent halfback Dylan Brettle crashing over the line for Blacktown’s second try to give them a half-time lead.

In the second half, it was captain Noah Penitani who brought Endeavour back into the match, breaking through Blacktown’s defence to score a try in the first two minutes of the second half.

Fullback Chevy Stewart followed suit with another four-pointer to give the youthful Shire squad a comfortable lead.

When Stanley-Traill got sent to the sin bin for multiple infringements late on, it gave Blacktown the opening they needed.

It was fullback Wilson Decourcey who pulled off a 70m effort to put the blue and gold back into the game, bringing the scores to 16-14 with 10 minutes remaining.

But a superb kick from Bronson Harden-Emery, and a dream bounce for finisher Luca Bento ensured Endeavour got the victory.

PREVIEW: Pats ready to show off new generation

Patrician Brothers’ College, Blacktown is renowned for producing top-tier rugby league players and the new generation is ready to make its mark.

The schoolboys juggernaut will kick start their 2022 Peter Mulholland Cup campaign against Endeavour Sports High on Wednesday, with the game exclusively live streamed by The Daily Telegraph.

The Western Sydney rugby league school is where Penrith Panthers stars Jarmoe Luai, Stephen Crichton and Sean O’Sullivan first linked up as students and now the nursery for NRL talent is back to show off their schoolboy stars.

Coach Noah Meares said the “NRL Schoolboys Cup is synonymous” with Patrician Brothers after winning eight Cups, including two out of the last three seasons, and a National Championship in 2012.

Patrician Brothers College in Blacktown. L-R Jenson Tuaoi, Semisi Faasisila, Jordan Faleono and Matt Arthur. Picture: Toby Zerna

“We have boys that come from all over that want to come to the school because they know about our history and culture and want to be a part of it,” Meares said.

“They also know that coming here not only gives them an opportunity to play in the competition but gives them a great opportunity to move into the NRL and pathways systems.

“We have the most former students that are currently playing in the NRL, so the Cup means a lot to our school and our boys and that’s why they always put their best foot forward.

“In fairness it seems like it means more for the boys to play for their school than it does for their club or rep club some of the time.”

After last year’s competition was scrapped midway due to Covid, Patrician Brothers remain the reigning champions after defeating Westfields by six points in the 2020 grand final.

And Coach Meares said after two years of disrupted seasons, his side will come out fighting this year, determined to chase back-to-back championships.

“We had a very good team in 2020 and last year even though it was disruptive we were again in a really good spot,” Meares said.

“I think we’re always going to be in a good spot because there’s always a very high potential among these boys but the group this year I think has a greater potential than last year’s team.”

“We had a very young team last year, a lot of them were 16 so we’ve had players come back a lot more experienced and mature which will only work in our favour I think.”

Patrician Brothers quest for back-to-back titles won’t be easy, and it begins on Wednesday against a strong Endeavour Sports High.

Meares said the side from the Shire are known to be “fit, fast and play a well-structured game of footy.”

“Endeavour is a very well drilled team and their fitness tends to be the difference between them and other sides,” Meares said.

“I know they have a few standout players from Cronulla junior reps so the boys will have a job to do to shut down those key players but I think we’re definitely up for the challenge.”

Bass High v St Dominic’s College, Peter Mulholland Cup

They are the only comprehensive school in the Peter Mulholland Cup and Bass High where it like a badge of honour. Watch their season opener against St Dominic’s LIVE at 12pm, Wednesday.

Patrician Brothers chant after big win over Farrer.

Don’t miss out on the headlines from Rugby League Live Stream. Followed categories will be added to My News.

It is the only comprehensive school in the Peter Mulholland Cup, and Bass High wears it like a badge of honour.

The ultimate underdogs in the elite schoolboys league competition, coach Jon Wilson has instilled a sense of hard work in his students which sees early morning wake-ups and full-squad commitment a cornerstone of the school’s success.

The six-time University Shield champions will need every bit of that toughness and resilience as they prepare for a tough battle with Western Sydney rivals St Dominic’s on Wednesday.

WATCH BASS HIGH v ST DOM’S IN THE PLAYER ABOVE FROM 12PM, WEDNESDAY AND FIND OUT WHEN ALL GAMES ARE ON BELOW

The game will be exclusively live streamed by The Daily Telegraph at 12pm as part of a season-long deal to showcase the best emerging rugby league talent in the state.

Hard running forward Bilal El Youseff will be one of the key returning players for the Bass High side. Picture: Jonathan Ng

Wilson, who also coaches the St George Dragons Tarsha Gale Cup side, believes his side will show an increased competitiveness in 2022 with most of his squad returning for this campaign.

“We are constantly trying to change up our game,” Wilson said. “We are basically trying to get more combinations on the field, we were a bit off the pace in that area last year.

“The players don’t get time off during the day to train together. Our boys are out there on the field at 6.30 and 7am before school each morning.

“A lot of our boys were in the younger age last year. I think we will be more on the pace this season.”

St Dominic’s College won’t be outdone in the forward stocks with exciting players like Uaale Elisara. Picture: Jonathan Ng

St Dominic’s have been one of the unsung school sides heading into the Peter Mulholland Cup season, but there is always plenty brewing at the foot of the mountains.

The Penrith school has been a production factory for exciting playmakers including Greg Alexander, Brad Fitler and more recently Nathan Cleary and appear to have another leading the way in captain Liam Ison.

Ison was impressive for SG Ball premiers Penrith to start the season earlier this year, before he was cruelled by injury and missed the Panthers sizzling run to the title.

St Dominic’s coach Kyle Churchill said his side possessed the talent to shock the competition this season.

“I don’t think there’ll be much expectation on us and that’s something we are pretty excited about,” Churchill said.

“We’re probably going to have a bit of shock value and we’re backing the way that we’re going to play is going to be a little different.”

Endeavour took to the field in today’s Peter Mulholland Cup with 16 players playing in their Debut game in the National Schoolboy Cup Competition.

Brad Kelly, Endeavour SHS coach said ” I’m really pleased with the boys especially since we had 16 boys who have never played in the Schoolboy Cup before, plus we had some 16 year olds”

”I’m really happy with the way the team played, we lost concentration there a couple times which allowed them (Patrician Bro’s) to score a couple times”

”We look forward to getting it on with Bass High School at 21st June at Macreadie park,” Kelly said

A large portion of the team played in last year’s competition as 16 years olds so they are returning this year much more mature and experienced which should set the tone for the rest of the team.”

Every year you know you’re going to come against the best sides like Hills, Endeavour and Blacktown but until you start playing you don’t really know whose returning and what they’ve got so it’s hard to get a gauge on them just yet.”

Coach’s Final Say:

“It is an exciting team. It is pretty young but we have a lot of guys that have come out of a successful Harold Matts Cup season for the Raiders.

We have big squad and it has grown over the last couple of years. We have gone down the path of trying to help and draw from the entire Canberra region. We play a game style where we move the footy a bit.

Hopefully that is an advantage for us especially having guys who have played a lot of footy together.”

Coach’s Final Comment:

“Being competition first-timers we’re a little unsure how it’s all going to pan out.

Playing against sides interstate, sides we’ve never seen before or even hoped to be playing against.

Seeing what the other schools have to offer is going to be a great experience for our students as well as us as coaching staff.

We understand we’ll probably be the underdogs again, which we were in the qualifiers, so we’ll just keep turning up week in and out and hopefully it puts us in a position where we can compete with some of the biggest schools across the country.”

Illawarra Sports High School

Current NRL Alumni:

Coach’s Final Say:

“The last couple of years we have made great improvements.

Traditionally we were less competitive but we have proven that we can match it with the bigger schools.

There is a bit of confidence growing for the last couple of years and we have good development in the squad with several players coming back from last year.”

All Saints Maitland

Coach: Chris Brennan, Shane Whereat

Captain: Myles Martin and Caleb Garvie

Past Cups: 0 (2 x Trophy wins, 2018 Cup quarter-finals)

Current NRL Alumni: Hudson Young (Raiders), Max King (Bulldogs), Jock Madden (Tigers), Brodie Jones, Brayden Musgrove (Knights)

Former Patrician Brothers Blacktown lock forward and Knights contracted star Myles Martin has been a crucial addition to the All Saints Maitland ranks.

2022 Squad:

Machai Pillidge, Jasper Cain, Tom Lovegrove, Lucas Hickling, Riley Smith, Khynan Butler*, Fletcher Thompson, Ashton Farrell, Caleb Garvie*, Nicholas Tuliatu, Joseph Green, Ethan Quinn, Myles Martin, Trey Morris, Taite Swinton, Lachlan Hickson, Brock Allaway, Hamish Munro, Montell Owen, Fletcher Anlezark, Clay Edwards

Coach’s Final Say:

“We have an inexperienced squad but also an enthusiastic squad.

Myles Martin and Caleb Garvie, who have both made the NSW CCC squad, are our two guys we are relying on to take a lot of the workload.

We will be strong through the middle, quick play the balls and work hard in those effort areas.”

Farrer MAHS

Coach: Ethan Sherlock

Captain: Will Woods

Past Cups: 0 (2019 Schoolboy Cup semi-finalists)

Current NRL Alumni: None

Farrer MAHS big bopping brothers Oliver and Sebastian Sykes will make sure there is always a burning flame in the engine room.

2022 Squad:

Coach’s Final Say:

“We have had a good pre-season, we started work in term one, and these boys also play all their club footy together.

We have the same 13 playing in the Group 4 under-18s competition to keep that contuity there.

It is a pretty young squad with only five boys in Year 12, but it is still a talented squad. They can discount us all they like, we embrace that challenge.”

Holy Cross College, Ryde

Holy Cross College has been dealt a crushing injury blow on the eve of the Peter Mulholland Cup. Picture: Jonathan Ng

Coach: Tim White

Captain: Keenan Lawandos

Current NRL alumni:

Mitchell Moses (Eels), Luke Brooks, Alex Seyfarth (Tigers), Esan Marsters (Titans), Junior Tatola (Rabbitohs), Bailey Sironen (Warriors)

2022 squad:

Past Cups: 1 (1981; 5 x runners-up)

Coach’s final say:

“Dealt a tough blow right at the end of pre-season with three key players including captain Keenan Lawandos ruled out with long-term injury.

Our depth will certainly be tested early in the season. With a lack of pre-season due to the weather, it could provide a real hurdle.

We will have to change our game plan a lot with two fresh halves on the field and one of our halves heading to hooker. Basically there will be limited coaching, it will be a case of go out there and just play footy.”

Patrician Brothers, Fairfield

Patrician Brothers Fairfield have the highest rate of returning players this season including heavy hitters Yeyha Ayache, Joshua Alhazim and Jordan Miller. Picture: Jonathan Ng

Coach: Frank Pritchard

Captain: Josh Alhazim

Current NRL Alumni:

Nathan Brown (Eels), Taniela Paseka (Sea Eagles), Marcelo Montoya (Warriors)

2022 squad list:

Taj’h Colquohoun*, Billy Arena*, Sione Lolohea*, Zaidas Muagututia, Godfrey Illavalu*, Dionn Haratsaris*, Chad Daniels*, Jordan Miller*, Yehya Ayache*, Matt Alhazim*, Joshua Alhazim*, Jezaiah Funa-Iuta, Bailey Myers*, Massimo Mari*, Robertson Lepale, Kohan Adler*, Archie Riley*, Jack Leigh*, Alistair Wilson, Junior Fagalele, Jai Strudwick, Josh Villarosa, Abdoulaye Bah, Robert Uhatafe*, Noah Funa*

Coach’s Final Say:

“Our preparation was disrupted by the wet weather, we have had a few hit outs now but we are trying to keep it simple.

Our rugby league season is really full on, so we don’t want to burn the guys out.

The school has a rich history in this competition, we have a rich history and culture of NRL players coming through.

We have been the sleeping giants for the last couple of years, but I have been brought in to find a pathway back to the top.”

St. Dominic’s College

St Dominic’s College are ready for a strong Peter Mulholland Cup campaign led by the likes of Billy Thompson, Liam Ison and Cainan Hardiman. Picture: Jonathan Ng

Liam Ison, Cainan Hardiman, Mitchell Heather, Uaale Elisara, Ryan Mooney, Jack Attard, Riley Pollard, Billy Thompson, Ethan Hutchings, Connor Autagavaia, Bayden Moran, Ezra Faasolo, Jack Ewer, Kai Raven, Jai Williams, Cooper Hale, Cooper Henderson, Jaxen Edgar, Jett Cleary

Coach’s Final Say:

“We’ve got a hungry squad who are excited to be playing this year.

We’re enjoying the fact that we’re going to be a lot more under the radar. I don’t think there’ll be much expectation on us and that’s something we are pretty excited about.

We’re probably going to have a bit of shock value and we’re backing the way that we’re going to play is going to be a little different. I think Hills will be well and truly the team to beat.”

St Gregorys College, Campbelltown

Coach: Tom Morrison

Captain: Charlie Guymer

Past Cups: 9 (1979, 1980, 1984, 1986, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1993, 2000)

Current NRL Alumni: Sam Williams (Raiders), James Tedesco (Roosters), Jack de Belin (Dragons), Adam Elliott, Joe Stimson (Bulldogs), Trent Peoples (Rabbitohs)

Coach’s Final Say:

“We’ve got a bit of mix this year of year, we’ve got some year 12 boys who are in their second or third season of Schoolboys Cup but then we’ve also got a couple of year 10 boys getting their first run.

I think Westfield and Patrician will be up there again this year. The boys are all very proud to be part of the squad and are even prioritising school footy over most other games at the moment.”

Hunter Sports High School

Hunter Sports High will be looking for a massive Peter Mulholland Cup season in 2022. Picture: Jonathan Ng

Coach: Anthony Gleeson

Captain: Taimana Elers

Past Cups: 0 (2016 semi-finalists)

Current NRL Alumni:

Phoenix Crossland, Chris Randall, Matt Croker, Pasami Saulo (Knights), Jesse Ramien (Sharks), Josh Jackson (Bulldogs), Tevita Pangai Jnr (Bulldogs)

2022 Squad List:

Mason Forbes, Max Fines, Benji Keene–O’Keefe, Harrison Sams*, Zac Wilkes, Lauchlyn Spicer*, Brandon Thompson*, Beau Slade, Taimana Elers, Kade Youlten*, Jayden Harris, Jett Woodward, Jakob Bacon, Jett Robards-Hassall, Rylee Moses Kincaid, Royden Taape*, Patrick Slade, Kyle McDermott

Coach’s Final Say:

“We have a young squad of players this year but many have been involved in the junior development teams from the Knights and Roosters.

This year we’re looking to consolidate our position back in the Schoolboy Cup and develop players for coming seasons. I think the teams to beat will be Westfields and Blacktown Patrician Brothers.”

Bass High School

Coach: Jon Wilson

Captain: Jonathan Sua

Past Cups: 0 (6 x University Shield, 5 x Buckley Shield)

Current NRL alumni:

Aaliyah Fasavalu, Raecene McGregor, Page McGregor and Sereana Naitokatoka (NRLW), Dale Finucane, Royce Hunt (Sharks), Isaac Lumelume (Bulldogs), Kane Bradley (Cowboys), William Kei (Tigers)

2022 squad list:

Coach’s Final Say:

“With our fields still underwater, it has been hard to give the players a proper preparation.

We have only lost three players from last season so we have a squad who knows each other and knows its game.

We’re trying to go away from just being tough through the middle, these days you have to be skilful with the ball or you won’t win the Cup. We are constantly trying to change up our game.” (* Denotes returning player)

The Grange v Mount Ridley, NRL Schoolboys Cup Victoria qualifier

The Grange have punched their ticket to the NRL Schoolboys Cup on their first attempt after a resounding victory over Mount Ridley. Relive all the action from our LIVE STREAM.

Replay: NRL Schoolboys Qualifiers – Grange College v Mt Ridley

Schoolboy Cup Livestream

Don’t miss out on the headlines from Schoolboy Cup Livestream. Followed categories will be added to My News.

The Grange has booked one of two Victorian spots in this year’s NRL Schoolboys Cup after a dominant win in the qualifying final.

It was a fairytale finish for The Grange, running over Mount Ridley and proving to be Victoria’s top rugby league school in front of a cheering and chanting home crowd on Wednesday.

The Grange were clinical as they dissected Mount Ridley, to take the match 36-14 at The Grange’s new home facilities.

Year 11 student and Grange’s star centre Shan Ty Fatuleai said “excitement is an understatement” to compete in this year’s top-tier competition.

“This is everything we dreamt of and have worked towards, we can’t wait to get in there and rip up,” Fatuleai told News Corp.

The Grange are through to NRL Schoolboys Cup

“We know Sydney is a tough place to go but we’re just going to try our best. I think Victoria deserves the opportunity to showcase their rugby league skills, so we’re just going to go up there and show them what we’ve got.”

Crossing the line in the second half to cement The Grange’s victory, Fatuleai said he couldn’t help himself “but blow a kiss to the supporters” in celebration of the four-pointer.

“It’s our first game on the field in front of the school and to get the win was amazing. The atmosphere was insane.”

“I love the boys and our school.”

Suliasi Prescott once again starred for the competition newcomers, with the star hooker playing a major hand in the side’s five tries, while fullback Ethan Barlow and Fatuleai also produced outstanding football to send The Grange into their first NRL Schoolboys Cup.

Prescott, who has been named in the Under-18s Australian Schoolboys train-on-squad, punished Mt Ridley’s errors, showing plenty of pace and footwork in attack, streaking away to open the points of the home clash.

Forwards Tana Maiava and Richard Gabriel also crossed the line in the first half, giving The Grange every reason to be excited for the clinic that was about to unfold.

But Mount Ridley refused to give up without a fight and roared to life in the second half, but time proved to be their enemy with The Grange turning away a series of Ridley raids and finishing with a convincing 22-point victory.

Another fierce rugby league nursery, Hallam College, will join The Grange in the NRL Schoolboys Competition.

Preview: Prescott key as The Grange shoots for schoolboys league history

The Grange College is one step away from creating a schoolboys sporting story for the ages, looking to book their ticket interstate when they battle it out with Mt Ridley on Wednesday.

The competition first-timers have proved to be the year’s underdog, after an upset victory over Hallam College in Round 2 of the Victorian qualifiers put them in the box seat to move through to the NRL Schoolboys Cup competition.

The clash between the two fierce rugby league nurseries will be live streamed by the Herald Sun at 11am, Wednesday at The Grange College as part of an exclusive partnership to showcase the best emerging talents in the sport

The Grange P-12 College’s head coach Shannon Love said this week’s home clash will be an important opportunity to showcase their school’s talent and inspire the next generation of rugby league players.

“There’s a huge sense of pride going around the whole school community at the moment, everyone is a part of it, from our teaching staff to our younger years,” Love said.

“It’s the first time we get to host a game on our new facilities so the boys are a little bit nervous, it’ll be a little bit of a spectacle with the school coming out to watch the game.

“But this is what the ultimate vision was from the very start. The reason why we wanted to host at school is to create and environment for the younger age groups to look up to the boys and one day want to be a part of the experience and opportunity as well.”

Suliasi Prescott scored three tries in The Grange’s NRL Schoolboys Cup win over Hallam College. Picture: Penny McCredie

All eyes on Wednesday will be on The Grange’s star hooker Suliasi Prescott, who scored a hat-trick in the first 15 minutes of their 32-18 victory over Hallam College.

“Suliasi has been a good leader for the boys this season. He’s been working on his kicking, waiting for the right opportunities in his attacking game,” Love said.

“Suliasi has been linking up really well with Iziah Havea in the centres and Ethan Barlow who is our fullback.

“Our number 13 Muao Kaisala has also been really strong at lock for us. Suilasi and Muao have played for years and years together so they’ve also got a really good combination there.”

Love said his rookie schoolboys side’s main goal on Wednesday will be “trying to weather the storm” of Mt Ridley’s strong forward pack.

“I think Mt Ridley will come out of the blocks really strong, I think they’ll use their big mobile forwards in the middle,” he said.

“So I think they’ll try to gothrough the middle pretty hard and I think it’ll be tough trying to weather that storm.

The Grange lock forward Muao Kaisala crashes across to score in the win over Hallam College at Casey Fields. Picture: Penny McCredie

“I think they’ll play a really up-tempo game but we just need to try and play at our pace, which is what we did against Hallam.”

Love said qualifying to the NRL Schoolboys Cup is a goal that The Grange was determined to achieve this year and his boys “have put themselves in the best position to achieve that” after an emphatic start to the season.

“Being newcomers, one thing I spoke a lot about with the boys this year is that there is no expectation on us and I think they’ve really maximised on that,” he said.

“Qualifying to interstate was a goal we set at the start of the year as a playing group and it’s something we’ve been striving towards over the last term and a half, trying to get the boys into the next level and give them an opportunity to get picked up interstate.

“We’ve still got a job to do but we’ve put ourselves in a good position to achieve that goal.

“I hope this competition is something the boys will remember forever.”
