The Shalom Sauaso-Kaiah Hansell one-two punch proved too hot for Hill Sports to handle as Ipswich SHS turned on the style to storm to the national NRL Schoolgirls title.

Shalom Sauaso and Kaiah Hansell

Remember the names.

The pair were pivotal as Ipswich SHS crushed Hills Sports High 28-6 in the NRL National Schoolgirls final at Cbus Super Stadium on Wednesday.

Hansell scored three tries in an excellent display of classy finishing.

Then there was Sauaso.

She was pivotal and rightly awarded the game ball after earning player of the match honours, on top of her player of the tournament honours.

One second, she was stopping a certain try with a tackle that was equal parts clutch and crunching in defence. The next, she was driving the footy upfield with a barnstorming run.

She also nailed four of five attempts at goal, including some tricky ones from the touchline.

It should come as no surprise given Sauaso has already represented the Reds in the Super W rugby union competition and has a Broncos NRLW deal.

Ipswich coach Alex Nicholson was thrilled with the performances of both, particularly hat-trick hero Hansell who was a natural hooker playing out of position on the wing.

Dreams do come true

“I suppose dreams do come true,” Nicholson said of Hansell’s performance.

As for Sauaso, Nicholson noted that “it takes a really special person” to nail three conversions from the touchline in a match as pressure-packed as a national final.

“She’s extraordinary, she’s going to do great things after this and she officially has fulfilled everything possible as a schoolgirl this year with her honour belt,” Nicholson said.

“I’m speechless, the feeling’s amazing, the girls are amazing, and their whole community is just so proud of them.”

The match was a tense affair early, with the two sides trading tries inside the opening 10 minutes.

Ipswich took a slender 12-6 lead into the half-time break and then took total control in the second half as they stormed to the national title.

Star Hills halfback and Bulldogs-contracted Olivia Vaalele was a shining light in defeat and kicked superbly.

For Ipswich, the demons of last year’s shock Titans Schools League final, where they coughed up a 26-0 lead to lose to Mabel Park 28-26, have now well and truly been exorcised.

Hills Sports High will have redemption on their minds as they enter a second-straight NRL Schoolgirls Cup final on Wednesday.

While their coach Patricia Raikadroka was adamant her side was not tapping into the emotion of their loss in last year’s inaugural final, it will be hard for them to forget it.

The rising Schoolgirls powerhouse has now won back to back titles in NSW – next on the agenda will be a first-ever national success when they head to Queensland in two weeks.

Hills Sports High are NSW Schoolgirls champions after downing Central Coast Sports College 18-0 in a one-sided grand final at Campbelltown Stadium.

Having fallen to Central Coast in the preliminary rounds, the girls from Sydney’s west came out breathing fire and cruised to back-to-back titles following a dominant first half that included three unanswered tries.

“It was tough coming in knowing that we’d lost to them before,” said Hills coach Patricia Raikadroka.

“We made tactical changes and we had players returning from injury. Those key players lifted the team’s confidence, and Aliahana (Fuimaono) picked up the player of the match.”

Central Coast found breaking the Hills defence a tough assignment.

Looking ahead, Hills are likely to start favourites next season as they chase a third consecutive title.

“A lot of our girls are either in year 11, and some are still in year 10.”

In unfortunate scenes, the game was called seven minutes early after Central Coast’s Bronte Ryan received treatment following a heavy knock.

At the time of reporting, as a precaution, the backrower was mobilised to hospital in the back of an ambulance.

Earlier, punishing backrower Aliahana Fuimaono, who was player of the match, burrowed across to put Hills ahead in the second minute, and the points kept flowing in a first half that finished 14-0.

Restricted by strangling defence, Central Coast rarely crossed halfway and they had little answer to the bullocking efforts of Hills rep stars Ella Walker and Mya Muller.

Walker proved unstoppable early, the Australian Schoolgirls prop continually put her side on the front foot and paved the way for centre Naioka Tuipulotu to cross out wide in the 10th minute.

Rising Harvey Norman Premiership centre Danielle Seckold added another before the break.

And any hope of a Central Coast comeback was immediately dashed on the resumption when Fuimaono dashed down the left edge for her second four pointer of the day.

Trailing by 18, Central rallied in the stifling conditions and began to dominate field position with 10 minutes to play.

Halves Mahlie Cashin and Madison Massey sparked several attacking raids, but Hills had all the answers, scrambling on numerous occasions to shut down promising plays.

With the state trophy in the cabinet, Hills have booked a trip to the Gold Coast next month where they will meet Queensland’s best in a battle to be crowned national champions.

This match-up is much anticipated, especially with the standard of the women’s game lifting significantly in the wake of the NRLW’s growing popularity and recent expansion.

Hills Sports coach Patricia Raikadroka, whose playing experience included running out for the Australian Prime Ministers XIII and Fiji, said is a key for her young team this season has been the school supporting both rugby league and rugby sevens.

“The skills really complement each other,” she said

“We have a pool of athletes that like both and it works well for us. They are taking on opportunities, that are helping them.

“The two sports are quite different, the patterns and how they use their bodies is quite different.

“I know other programs separate, but we work well with the coaches to make sure the players get everything they need and it’s good for the girls.”

The rugby league program at Hills only started 12 months ago and has been an instant hit.

“Our numbers in a year from girls applying have almost tripled,“ Raikadroka said.

“Our senior squad last year was 20 odd and the juniors were about the same.

“We’ve had close to 100 applications to come to the school, we are trying to set ourselves up as a real nursery.

“We are shaping up to be the place to be for women players to come.

“We want them to be good people, the best rugby league or rugby sevens athletes here we can, and we want people that contribute to the culture of the team as well.”

Hills proved too strong for Erindale in last year’s decider.

Central Coast has the same ambitions for young football talent north of Sydney.

“It’s only our second year in the competition. Last year we struggled to even put points on the board,“ said coach Paul Franz.

“Now we are a year older, a new school in the rugby league world and girls want to come here.

“They don’t need to leave the coast to play rugby league.”

Hills Sports High made their way into the grand final with a 16-4 victory over Westfields Sports, while Central Coast booked their spot with a 24-10 win over Bass High.

In the pool phase, Hills posted a 42-10 victory over Bass High but were downed 24-10 by Central Coast in late June.

Central Coast also defeated Bass High 24-4 in another pool game.

National Schoolgirl Cup provides new NRLW pathway

The revamped National Schoolgirl Cup has kicked off for 2024, with talented young players from across the nation hoping to take the next step in their rugby league development.

One player who has made the most of the playing pathway on offer is Maleala Su’a, who captained Mabel Park to a 26-8 win over The Hills Sports High School at Allianz Stadium to take out the inaugural National Schoolgirls Cup national title last year.

The team had earlier defeated Kirwan State High School 38-0 to take out the Queensland Schoolgirls Cup to earn their opportunity to claim national honours.

It’s been a big 12 months for Su’a who has since joined the top 24 squad for the Gold Coast Titans and also played nine games with the Souths Logan Magpies in the open women’s BMD Premiership.

Earlier this week, the versatile talent who has spent time playing in the forwards and in the halves, was also named in Queensland’s Under 19 State of Origin team.

“The National Schoolgirl Cup is a top-level elite competition for the schoolgirls to mirror the schoolboys competition and gives an opportunity for them to play in a higher level competition,” the NRL’s Queensland school participation co-ordinator Jesse Naumann said.

“A lot of these girls are getting signed to NRLW clubs now as well, so it gives them a schoolgirl pathway of progression.

“Maleala, she’s definitely a standout player who has come from Mabel Park and is part of the Titans squad, so shows that there’s a realistic pathway for girls coming through the competition to the NRLW.”

The National Schoolgirls competition is now in its third year, but in 2024, it has been revamped to accommodate a growth in participating teams, with schools divided into three pools by region.

“This year we’ve made a proper structure of the competition and formed the schools into pools and we’ve got more schools involved in the competition,” Naumann said.

“We have more in Central Queensland … and more from North Queensland involved as well.

“It’s only the third year of the Schoolgirl Cup, but it will be the second year of it being (truly) ‘national’.

Last year was our first national final, which was taken out by Mabel Park, who are one of the Pool A teams this year.

They played The Hills Sports High, who were the winners from New South Wales.

“I say it’s the third year of the competition because we did have a schoolgirls competition in 2022, but it only went as far as the Queensland final.

We didn’t get to a national final, so it’s the third year for us, but only the second year including a national final.”

This year, Queensland’s National Schoolgirl Cup Pool A (SEQ) is supported by the Gold Coast Titans who will provide support for the schools and match officials.

To celebrate the start of the competition this year, the Titans held a special launch of Pool A schools at the Titans High Performance Centre during an NRLW training session.

Coach Karyn Murphy and captain Georgia Hale met with the girls who also received a tour of the club’s training facilities.

Unlike the 9-a-side Karyn Murphy Cup which provides its own development goals.

The National Schoolgirls Cup competition is a full 13-a-side contest that gives players the opportunity to experience elite schools rugby league and play at a high standard in a different style of game.

Experience reigned supreme to deliver Mabel Park State High a historic result in the inaugural NRL National Schoolgirls Cup final against Hills Sports High.

Mabel Park have claimed the inaugural NRL Schoolgirls Cup with a 26-8 win over NSW champions Hills Sports High School at Allianz Stadium on Wednesday.

Winning captain Malaela Su’a was on the verge of tears after collecting the trophy and said the feeling is ‘incredible’.

“There are no words,” Su’a said.

“I feel like I’m on fire right now, we made history and it just feels incredible.”

Su’a warned rivals that the title was only the beginning for Mabel Park.

“It’s really great that this competition exists for our young girls looking up at us,” she said.

“They’ll know they can chase the dream and anything is possible.”

Hills were looking the stronger side in the opening 10 minutes, but it was Mabel Park who struck first as Alice Shannon powered through to open the scoring.

Lily Vaitolo doubled the advantage for the Queensland side just minutes later before a stunning try from fullback Nazlyn Waaka-Rhind, whose fantastic footwork enabled her to dodge past the Hills defence, gave Mabel Park a solid 14-0 advantage at halftime.

There was a significant delay just before the break to allow Mable Park’s Nikolina Fangupo to be wheelchaired off the field following a hard tackle, but the Queenslander was able to return to the field for the second half.

Hills finally struck back 10 minutes into the second half with Manua Maleka scoring before Mabel Park scored one of the strangest tries seen all year, capitalising on a mistake from Hills to push the advantage out to 16 points.

Hills got their second and tried to mount a comeback with minutes remaining, but Mabel Park quickly squashed any hope with a final converted try.

It is a moment that has been a long-time coming for the girls of Mabel Park.

The school has been at the forefront of women’s rugby league for almost half a decade, building a schoolgirls program before their boys back in 2015.

The program already has a proven track record of producing NRLW talent, and the trophy cabinet is already overflowing with Karyn Murphy Cup titles.

But a chance to be crowned inaugural champions is an opportunity the proud school will not want to pass up.

“The opportunity to represent our school on the biggest stage means the world to these girls and our coaching staff,” Mabel Park coach Chace Carey said.

“Having worked alongside this group for the past five years, I have experienced first hand the highs and the lows, and witnessed the resilience the girls have developed as they have overcome every hurdle thrown their way.

“Having the opportunity to represent Queensland at the national titles extends beyond the footy field and into our broader community. I have no doubt that regardless of the result the team will put a performance together that we can be proud of.”

Hills Sports High will give up more than a few years in the experience stakes, but they will make up for it with their pride and passion.

The school’s girls program is only in its first year but has already exceeded expectations by being crowned the best schoolgirls side in NSW.

Hills Sport High will also carry the home field advantage into the game, with 300 of the school’s students ready to fill out part of the grandstands at Allianz Stadium.

“I really wanted to take the whole school, but we could only get enough buses to ship 300 kids into the city,” Hills Sports principal Amanda De Carli said.

“You can’t play in a stadium that big without a crowd, and that shows what it means for all of our students.”
