In an eagerly anticipated Peter Mulholland Cup Qualifying Final, Endeavour Sports showcased their skilfulness with a comprehensive 52-6 victory over Holy Cross.

The opening ten minutes was an exhibition of intense physicality and strong starts from both sides.

Endeavour broke the deadlock with a well-executed play as Lewis Sargent-Wilson delivered a perfectly placed kick, allowing Kaden Garner to score the first try.

This opening score set the stage for Endeavour’s near flawless first half performance, as they dominated proceedings to establish a commanding 30-0 lead by halftime.

The second half saw a more balanced contest with Holy Cross displaying resilience and determination, keeping the game tightly contested for extended periods.

However, Endeavour’s class shone through once again with a series of late tries that sealed their dominant victory.

Holy Cross, despite being under strength, played with commendable spirit and represented their school with pride. Their effort and sportsmanship were evident throughout the match.

For Endeavour, standout performances included Kaden Garner’s hat-trick of tries and a memorable try by Year 10 student Cruz Parkin, who marked his debut in the Black Jumper.

Endeavour’s victory propels them forward in the Peter Mulholland Cup to the Grand Final Qualifier in two weeks time.

Schoolboy Cup Rnd 1 double header

Hills read riot act despite blistering start to campaign

Live stream: Hills Sports and Endeavour clash in massive NRL Schoolboys Cup double-header

For 50 minutes, Hills Sports showed their undoubted NRL Schoolboys quality by running Endeavour ragged.

It’s the final 10 minutes that was a little cause for concern. Relive all the action.

Watch a full replay as Hills Sports v Endeavour Sports.

Hills Sports High have kicked off their redemption campaign with a convincing 36-16 win over Endeavour at Blue Bet Stadium on Wednesday.

Hills wasted no time in getting points on the board with Na’oia Tofaeano breaking through the Endeavour defence on their first possession to score in the corner.

Endeavour were a formidable opponent, but were simply outclassed by last year’s runners-up and their cohesive defensive line.

Hills assistant coach Mitchell Lewis said while it was a positive result to start the season, there was definitely a few issues to address.

The Hills backline proved a handful for the Endeavour defence all day. Pic: Christian Anstey

“I think we played well for the first 50 minutes,” he said.

“There was definitely a little bit of complacency there.”

Hills made good use of an extra man on the field after Endeavour’s Bailey Leach was sent to the sin bin late in the first half, planting two tries before the break.

The sin bin was also needed late in the match for a dangerous tackle, the culprit this time was Hills centre Albert Litsisoni.

Mitchell said being a man down ‘really hurt’ the team.

“It let (Endeavour) gain more momentum,” Mitchell said.

Fullback Lincoln Fletcher contributed 16 points of his own, kicking six from six as well as scoring a try just before halftime.

Mitchell said the boys really need to prove defensively ahead of their next clash with Patrician Brothers, Blacktown on June 14.

“If we want to be really serious about this competition, we can’t be conceding 18 points every week.”

It was a good start to the 2023 season for Hills Sports. Pic: Christian Anstey

PREVIEW

Still chastened by last year’s grand final defeat, Hills Sports High are determined to kick off their 2023 Peter Mulholland Cup campaign in style on Wednesday.

After going through the 2022 season undefeated, Hills fell 20-16 to Patrician Brothers, Fairfield in the final moments of a thrilling decider.

They start their new campaign with a clash against Endeavour Sports High, a team they comfortably disposed of in the early rounds last year.

Hills began last year’s decider on fire but faded in the second half.

The match is part of a blockbuster double header at Blue Bet Stadium and will be LIVE STREAMED exclusively by KommunityTV as part of our season-long coverage of the Peter Mulholland Cup.

All four teams are part of the seeded pool and Hills coach Shane Jones knows his side face a huge task to repeat last year’s heroics.

“Obviously these games are very hard to win,” Jones said.

“But the boys are out there training in the early hours of the morning, sometimes it’s still dark and there’s frost on the oval, but they get it done because they love it.”

Jordan Uta, who came off the bench in last year’s grand final, said the boys want to come into the new season stronger than ever and learn from last year’s mistakes.

Hills Sports players Callan Phillips, Albert litisoni, Lorenzo Talataina and Jordan Uta.

“It obviously gives us more motivation,” Uta said.

“It all depends on the boys, if they put in the effort in training, the results will come.”

A key part of bouncing back from last year’s disappointment for Jones is consistency in every game, no matter the opponent.

“We try to instil in the boys how important it is to compete in every moment of the game, not just in the big games,” Jones said.

Upsets galore as Schoolboys final four confirmed

Surprise results, tries aplenty and quality players putting on quite a show … today’s NRL Schoolboys Cup quarter-finals had a bit of everything.

Don’t miss out on the headlines from Rugby League Live Stream. Followed categories will be added to My News.

QF4: Hills Sports High 46 d Holy Cross College 18

Hills Sports High cruised into the NRL Schoolboys Cup semi-finals on the back of a 28-point demolition of Holy Cross College.

It was not an unexpected win, with the top ranked school taking on the eighth. But the margin was a massive surprise.

The game was over by halftime as Hills piled on 40 points without conceding.

NRL Schoolboys semifinal draw

Wednesday, August 24

Hills Sports v Erindale College

Westfields v Pats Fairfield

Holy Cross won the second half 18-6, but it hardly mattered in the end

A trio of tries from second rower Angus Gray, fullback Cameron Kanaan and right center Michael Gabriel simply made the scoreline more respectable.

Gabriel’s try was particularly impressive, with the young player storming the length of the pitch, out-running Hills Sports second rower Liam Aarons.

Knowing their semi-final spot was in the bag in the first half, Hills Sports treated the second half as a finals warm-up.

It was Hills Sports’ impressive footwork and clean teamwork that landed them seven consecutive tries from left wing Siaosi Kiliti, prop Vena Putaki-Case, right wing Alaa Lababidi, fullback Blake Metcalfe, second rower Harry Hassett and Lorenzo Talataina, who landed two.

Kiliti was particularly on fire, with his pure speed and teamwork setting up multiple tries.

A devastating second half performance from Westfields Sports High School has secured them a spot in the NRL Schoolboys Cup semi-finals.

It was certainly a game of two halves, but it was Westfields’ winning half which mattered most.

Trailing 16-6 after the first 30 minutes, Westfields hit back hard to claim 22 unanswered points in the second half.

Fullback Luke Laulilii’s try on the halftime whistle sparked the comeback, with Westfields scoring four more after that.

Hooker Tallyn Da Silva converted his own try while left wing Will Craig added a double to give them a 22-16 lead with four minutes remaining.

Second rower Solomone Saukuru iced the victory late on with a converted try.

Westfields coach Troy Weeden praised the efforts of ‘outstanding’ Denzel Schaafhausen Mino.

“He came off the bench and relieved a bit of pressure for us.”

QF2: Erindale College 26 – 22 Patrician Brothers Blacktown

Erindale College’s 16 point thrilling comeback secured their 26-22 win over Patrician Brothers Blacktown in the quarter-finals of the Peter Mulholland Cup.

It was set to be an exciting game, with pool A’s winless Patrician Brothers Blacktown taking on top qualifier Erindale College.

Despite trailing 22-10 at half time, Erindale clawed its way back, scoring 16-unanswered points in the final 30 minutes.

The Canberra side can thank the relentless effort and impeccable skill of Regan Carr for their unexpected comeback.

Putting six points to his name in the first half was only a warm up for the Australian Secondary Schoolboys player, adding another eight in the second.

It was two conversions and a four-pointer from the school’s captain in the final 10 minutes that flipped the score on its head, with Erindale taking a 26-22 lead.

The efforts from Peter Soward, hooker Xavier Cacciotti and Will O’Malley cannot go amiss, with their tries having propelled Erindale to tie up the game at 22-22 late in the second half.

The win was even more impressive, having landed a semi-final spot without their coach Ash Barnes in attendance.

Barnes said he is incredibly proud of the boys’ resilience and how they, and the staff ‘stepped up’ without him there.

Despite suffering another loss, Patrician Brothers Blacktown should not be disheartened, with the Sydney side proving they deserved their position in the top eight.

The school performed as a team of stars, and working as a tight unit, led the first half by 12 points, courtesy of tries from right wing Samuela Latu, five-eighth Wilson DeCourcey and left wing Ben Zahra.

QF1: Patrician Brothers, Fairfield 30 d Endeavour Sports High 10

Patrician Brother Fairfield advanced to the NRL Schoolboys Cup semi-finals after beating Endeavour Sports 30-10 in a thrilling game.

It certainly was exciting, with the Campbelltown Stadium crowd kept on their toes for the entire game.

In what seemed like an equal contest, it was a trio of tries in the final minutes that sealed the win for Patties.

Fullback Junior Fagalele, hooker Yehya Ayache and second rower Joshua Aihazim all crossed late on to put the game to bed.

It was far from an easy ride for Patties and scoreline didn’t do Endeavour justice.

Sixteen-year-old Australian Secondary Schoolboys representative Chevy Stewart kept Endeavour in contention with some outstanding defence and scoring his school’s only six points in the second half.

His influence did not stop there either, with Stewart getting the crowd to their feet as he showed off his speed storming the length of the pitch.

The efforts of Zaidas Muagututia, who scored Endeavour’s only four-pointer in the first half, must be applauded as well.

With only four places in the semi-finals, it is crucial each teams puts on their best performance.

Meet the players tasked with leading their teams to glory.

REGAN CARR

Erindale’s captain Regan Carr is the teams hot shot, with coach Ash Barnes having said he has been “outstanding throughout the campaign.”

Barnes was also impressed with the way in which Carr responded to the news that they would be without a coach for the quarter-finals after he tested positive for Covid.

It is understood a handful of NRL clubs are chasing the signature of the Canberra rookie after a stellar performance at the Australian Secondary Schools Nationals earlier this year.

With the side already missing centre Max Mercer and backrower Noah Martin, Carrs explosiveness on an edge will be even more crucial.

CHEVY STEWART

Endeavour Sports High School

It is no surprise the fullback, who was the talk of the town at the ASSRL Nationals last month, will be the man tasked with leading Endeavour to glory.

The Canberra contracted fullback has been impressive this season, with coach Brad Kelly singing his praises.

“He’s been really strong and consistent for us and we know what we’re going to get with him each week, so we’re looking for a good game from him,” said Kelly.

Endeavour are another team who will be down on troops for the finals, adding to the pressure on their star fullback. “We’re trying to scrape together a team. We’ve been decimated with injuries this year,” Kelly said.

LIAM ISON

St Dominic’s College

St Dominic’s College fullback Liam Ison at the school in Kingswood. Picture: Jonathan Ng

The fullbacks are on fire, with St Dominic’s coach Kyle Churchill having named number one Liam Ison as their key playmaker.

The Combined Catholic Colleges fullback has been a key part of the St Dominic’s side for a number of years, but has gone to another level after adding the captaincy this season.

“He has been one of the better players in the competition for a number of years,” Churchill said.

While the line-up is set to feature a number of younger players, the team will benefit from the return of centre Bayden Moran who was missing from the competition’s final round.

HARRY HASSETT

He has a name fit for the annals of rugby league, and a skillset to match it.

While Hill Sports has a huge amount of young talent at their disposal, the explosive ability of backrower Harry Hassett is hard to ignore.

Hills Sports coach Scott Jones said Hassett had been “a tremendous player on the edge for us and definitely has the ability to turn a game.”

The coach also highlighted the efforts of NSW CHS front rower Vena Putaki-Case as a real ‘hard-nosed’ worker. “When he comes to play, you know their packs going to be in for a real tough day.”

CAMERON KANAAN

Holy Cross College

Holy Cross will have a tough challenge on their hands against the undefeated, and top-ranked, Hills Sports High.

But there are a couple of names on the team sheet that has rival coach Scott Jones shaking slightly.

West Tigers junior Cameron Kanaan is at the top of the list.

The fullback is crucial to Holy Cross’ success this season, and will be determined to get his hands on the ball as much as possible to feed his outside men including Eels centre Michael Gabrael.

“(Holy Cross is) very well drilled and play some really good footy. It will be a tough game for us,” Jones said.

SAM TUIVAITI

Westfields Sports High School

Barely a whisper had been said about Sam Tuivaiti before the ASSRL Nationals in July, but afterwards the forward was the talk of the town.

The perfect mix of size and speed, Tuivaiti’s workrate off the bench for NSW CHS earned him a call-up into the Australian Schoolboys side.

Troy Weeden said the middle forward would play a crucial role to locking down their defence.

“He is a worker who controls the middle for us and is very tight defensively,” he said.

Sione Lolohea

Patrician Brothers Fairfield

If there was any player who could turn a game in the blink of an eye, it’s rampaging centre Sione Lolohea.

With the power of a middle forward, but the fleet-footed speed of a winger, Lolohea makes defensive units nervous.

The powerful centre was a key reason Patrician Brothers finished the regular season undefeated, scoring a try in all three of their round matches and leaving defenders in his wake on the regular.

MATT ARTHUR

While he may not have the power or speed to match the rest of this list, what Matt Arthur has is a football mind beyond his years.

It could come from being the son of an NRL coach, but Arthur’s tactical gameplay out of dummy-half is second to none.

He leads his team with a level of precision on the field, and is not afraid to get his body in the way of some of the biggest ballrunners of the competition.

Patties win Schoolboy Cup thriller

NRL Schoolboys Cup: Watch Patrician Brothers Fairfield v Holy Cross College, Ryde

Patrician Brothers may have cruised into the Peter Mulholland Cup finals series, but Holy Cross have proven it’s not time to be counting them out.

Watch the full replay as Patrician Brothers Fairfield v Holy Cross College in the Peter Mulholland Cup.

Patrician Brothers, Fairfield will take on Endeavour Sports High School in the NRL Schoolboys Cup quarter-finals after beating Holy Cross 22-20 in the final game of the season.

Having not won by a large enough margin to overtake Erindale College as the top ranked qualifier, Patties will take on Pool A’s third placed team in next Wednesday’s quarter-finals.

The sizeable crowd at New Era Stadium was kept on the edge of its seat, as a spirited Holy Cross outfit drew within two points to set up a thrilling final few minutes.

It had been the story of the night with Holy Cross constantly finding a way to claw their way back into the clash.

Even after Patrician Brothers shocked them in the opening minute, when booming centre Sione Lolohea broke through to score, Holy Cross still fought back to level the scores at 8-8 heading into halftime.

With the tries seesawing between the schools, the win was still up for grabs right until the final whistle was blown.

Patrician Brothers controlled the first minutes of each half, landing two tries in the first, and a trio in the second, courtesy of second rower Jezaiah Funa-Iuta, left wing Dionn Haratsaris, prop Jordan Miller, Zaidas Muagututia and Lolohea.

Despite this, Holy Cross was never far behind, with four-pointers from fullback Cameron Kanaan and hooker Cooper Wheelhouse putting Patrician Brotherss under immense pressure in the final 10 minutes.

The tight game was not unexpected, with both schools having started the third and final Peter Mulholland Cup game undefeated.

The efforts of Holy Cross’ second rower Angus Gray and left center Rory Davidson cannot go amiss, with their tries in the first 30 minutes keeping them in the game.

Holy Cross’ resilience has sent a clear warning to the remaining teams in the finals, with the side qualified for a quarter final berth as the second place finisher in the unseeded pools.

PREVIEW: All on the line in crunch Schoolboys Cup clash

After almost three months of preliminaries, the quarter final equation of the Peter Mulholland Cup has come down to a mere 60 minutes and the result of the final game.

While Patrician Brothers, Fairfield are safely ensconced in the final eight, who joins them as well as who they play is very much dependent on Thursday night’s result.

Holy Cross enter the match with a distinct disadvantage and need to pile on the points as well as win. Their climb to victory though is made all the more harder by a wave of injuries.

The game will be livestreamed from New Era Stadium, Cabramatta by KommunityTV on Thursday from 6pm.

Missing a trio of key players in scrum half Mikey Nasser, Max Braham and Jaii Robertson, Holy Cross coach Tim White said they will be relying on their year 12 players, who “are older and more experienced kids.”

The line-up will still feature key tryscorers in right wing Rory Davidson and left centre Jonah Watson, as well as scrum half Malakai Iatilevu who White highlighted as a crucial playmaker.

With the recent wet weather having impacted the team’s training, White said he will instruct them to “play a bit off the cuff and just see what happens.”

The match will be an historic moment for Patrician Brothers.

The clash marks 40 years since they beat Holy Cross 18-15 in the Cup final, then known as the CommBank Cup.

There will be a strong sense of legacy and school pride as coach of the victorious Pats 1982 team, Kevin Bourke, is due to be in attendance. He is the father of current assistant coach Bill.

HERE IS THE QUARTER FINAL QUALIFYING SCENARIO

All schools in Pool A – Hills Sports High School, Westfields Sports, Endeavour Sports and Patrician Brothers, Blacktown – automatically qualify.

The top schools from pools B, C and D, along with the top second-placed finisher from those pools will progress.

Erindale College (Group B) and St Dominics (Group D) are guaranteed to advance.

The Group C victor will come from Thursday night’s game. With both teams tied on four points, it’s a winner take all.

The final spot will come down to Holy Cross, Patrician Brothers, Fairfield and Illawarra SHS, with the Group C duo in the box seat.

Patrician Brothers will still qualify even if they lose as they hold such a strong point differential advantage over Illawarra (100 to -40). Holy Cross are also in a good spot with their differential over Illawarra (36 to -40). It means Illawarra will need Holy Cross to fall to a 76-point loss.

As far as next week’s quarter final are concerned, the top school from pools B, C or D will take on Pool A’s fourth-placed team (Patrician Brothers, Blacktown), while the top second placed team take on Hill Sports.

If Patrician Brothers win Thursday’s game by 28 points or more, they will knock Erindale College off the top spot and take on Patrician Brothers, Blacktown – a more favourable opposition to take on to seal a semi-final spot.

Coach’s Final Say:

“We will be coming into Round 1 fit and healthy, we know these boys simply love playing for the college and will have themselves ready to go come game time.

A large portion of the team played in last year’s competition as 16 years olds so they are returning this year much more mature and experienced which should set the tone for the rest of the team.”

Coach’s Final Say:

“After the last couple of years, the boys are very eager to get some uninterrupted footy this year.

They’ve been preparing as best they can, they’ve been in the gym a lot with the wet weather.

We’ve got a senior squad this year which is a blessing. A lot of our boys are in year 12 which hasn’t really happened for us in the last 10 years.”

Coach’s Final Say:

“We were a young side last year so most of those kids are back playing for us again.

Every year you know you’re going to come against the best sides like Hills, Endeavour and Blacktown but until you start playing you don’t really know whose returning and what they’ve got so it’s hard to get a gauge on them just yet.”

The boys here who have been at school since year seven really look forward to playing Schoolboys Cup, they aspire to be in the top team but all have to wait their turn.”

Past Cups: 2 (1997, 1998)

Coach’s Final Say:

“It is an exciting team. It is pretty young but we have a lot of guys that have come out of a successful Harold Matts Cup season for the Raiders.

We have big squad and it has grown over the last couple of years. We have gone down the path of trying to help and draw from the entire Canberra region. We play a game style where we move the footy a bit.

Hopefully that is an advantage for us especially having guys who have played a lot of footy together.”

Hallam College VIC

Coach’s Final Comment:

“Being competition first-timers we’re a little unsure how it’s all going to pan out.

Playing against sides interstate, sides we’ve never seen before or even hoped to be playing against.

Seeing what the other schools have to offer is going to be a great experience for our students as well as us as coaching staff.

We understand we’ll probably be the underdogs again, which we were in the qualifiers, so we’ll just keep turning up week in and out and hopefully it puts us in a position where we can compete with some of the biggest schools across the country.”

Illawarra Sports High School

Illawarra Sports High made it to the quarter-finals of the NRL Schoolboys Cup in 2020 and will be determined tomake the knockout stages again. Picture: Jonathan Ng

Coach’s Final Say:

“The last couple of years we have made great improvements.

Traditionally we were less competitive but we have proven that we can match it with the bigger schools.

There is a bit of confidence growing for the last couple of years and we have good development in the squad with several players coming back from last year.”

All Saints Maitland

Coach: Chris Brennan, Shane Whereat

Captain: Myles Martin and Caleb Garvie

Past Cups: 0 (2 x Trophy wins, 2018 Cup quarter-finals)

Current NRL Alumni: Hudson Young (Raiders), Max King (Bulldogs), Jock Madden (Tigers), Brodie Jones, Brayden Musgrove (Knights)

Former Patrician Brothers Blacktown lock forward and Knights contracted star Myles Martin has been a crucial addition to the All Saints Maitland ranks.

Machai Pillidge, Jasper Cain, Tom Lovegrove, Lucas Hickling, Riley Smith, Khynan Butler*, Fletcher Thompson, Ashton Farrell, Caleb Garvie*, Nicholas Tuliatu, Joseph Green, Ethan Quinn, Myles Martin, Trey Morris, Taite Swinton, Lachlan Hickson, Brock Allaway, Hamish Munro, Montell Owen, Fletcher Anlezark, Clay Edwards

Coach’s Final Say:

“We have an inexperienced squad but also an enthusiastic squad.

Myles Martin and Caleb Garvie, who have both made the NSW CCC squad, are our two guys we are relying on to take a lot of the workload.

We will be strong through the middle, quick play the balls and work hard in those effort areas.”

Farrer MAHS

Coach: Ethan Sherlock

Captain: Will Woods

Past Cups: 0 (2019 Schoolboy Cup semi-finalists)

Current NRL Alumni: None

Farrer MAHS big bopping brothers Oliver and Sebastian Sykes will make sure there is always a burning flame in the engine room.

2022 Squad:

Will Woods*, Oliver Sykes*, Jordan Whillock*, Will Kelly, Dusty Hagon, Joe Bartlett, Noah Hooley, Jordan Hamlin, Charlie Henderson*, Archie Wainwright*, Logan Spinks*, Will Milsom, Nate Follington*, Max Smith*, Nash Porter, Jack Hatton, Sebastian Sykes, Hayden Mitchell, Coben Battle, Bailey Lawrence, Harrison Thrift, Jai Tanna, Cooper Blinman, Ryan Marzato, Callum Cocking

Coach’s Final Say:

“We have had a good pre-season, we started work in term one, and these boys also play all their club footy together.

We have the same 13 playing in the Group 4 under-18s competition to keep that contuity there.

It is a pretty young squad with only five boys in Year 12, but it is still a talented squad. They can discount us all they like, we embrace that challenge.”

Holy Cross College, Ryde

Holy Cross College has been dealt a crushing injury blow on the eve of the Peter Mulholland Cup. Picture: Jonathan Ng

Coach: Tim White

Captain: Keenan Lawandos

Current NRL alumni:

Mitchell Moses (Eels), Luke Brooks, Alex Seyfarth (Tigers), Esan Marsters (Titans), Junior Tatola (Rabbitohs), Bailey Sironen (Warriors)

2022 squad:

Past Cups: 1 (1981; 5 x runners-up)

Coach’s final say:

“Dealt a tough blow right at the end of pre-season with three key players including captain Keenan Lawandos ruled out with long-term injury.

Our depth will certainly be tested early in the season. With a lack of pre-season due to the weather, it could provide a real hurdle.

We will have to change our game plan a lot with two fresh halves on the field and one of our halves heading to hooker. Basically there will be limited coaching, it will be a case of go out there and just play footy.”

Patrician Brothers, Fairfield

Patrician Brothers Fairfield have the highest rate of returning players this season including heavy hitters Yeyha Ayache, Joshua Alhazim and Jordan Miller. Picture: Jonathan Ng

Coach: Frank Pritchard

Captain: Josh Alhazim

Past Cups: 6 (1975, 1978, 1982, 1983, 1987, 1992)

Current NRL Alumni:

Nathan Brown (Eels), Taniela Paseka (Sea Eagles), Marcelo Montoya (Warriors)

2022 squad list:

Taj’h Colquohoun*, Billy Arena*, Sione Lolohea*, Zaidas Muagututia, Godfrey Illavalu*, Dionn Haratsaris*, Chad Daniels*, Jordan Miller*, Yehya Ayache*, Matt Alhazim*, Joshua Alhazim*, Jezaiah Funa-Iuta, Bailey Myers*, Massimo Mari*, Robertson Lepale, Kohan Adler*, Archie Riley*, Jack Leigh*, Alistair Wilson, Junior Fagalele, Jai Strudwick, Josh Villarosa, Abdoulaye Bah, Robert Uhatafe*, Noah Funa*

Coach’s Final Say:

“Our preparation was disrupted by the wet weather, we have had a few hit outs now but we are trying to keep it simple.

Our rugby league season is really full on, so we don’t want to burn the guys out.

The school has a rich history in this competition, we have a rich history and culture of NRL players coming through.

We have been the sleeping giants for the last couple of years, but I have been brought in to find a pathway back to the top.”

St. Dominic’s College

St Dominic’s College are ready for a strong Peter Mulholland Cup campaign led by the likes of Billy Thompson, Liam Ison and Cainan Hardiman. Picture: Jonathan Ng

Coach: Kyle Churchill

Captain: Liam Ison

Current NRL Alumni:

Nathan Cleary (Panthers) Zac Cini (Tigers) Jordan Grant (Storm) Dallin Watene-Zelezniak (Warriors)

2022 Squad List:

Liam Ison, Cainan Hardiman, Mitchell Heather, Uaale Elisara, Ryan Mooney, Jack Attard, Riley Pollard, Billy Thompson, Ethan Hutchings, Connor Autagavaia, Bayden Moran, Ezra Faasolo, Jack Ewer, Kai Raven, Jai Williams, Cooper Hale, Cooper Henderson, Jaxen Edgar, Jett Cleary

Coach’s Final Say:

“We’ve got a hungry squad who are excited to be playing this year.

We’re enjoying the fact that we’re going to be a lot more under the radar. I don’t think there’ll be much expectation on us and that’s something we are pretty excited about.

We’re probably going to have a bit of shock value and we’re backing the way that we’re going to play is going to be a little different. I think Hills will be well and truly the team to beat.”

St Gregorys College, Campbelltown

Coach: Tom Morrison

Captain: Charlie Guymer

Past Cups: 9 (1979, 1980, 1984, 1986, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1993, 2000)

Current NRL Alumni: Sam Williams (Raiders), James Tedesco (Roosters), Jack de Belin (Dragons), Adam Elliott, Joe Stimson (Bulldogs), Trent Peoples (Rabbitohs)

Powerhouse Charlie Guymer has stepped up to captain NRL Schoolboys heavyweights St Greg’s College. Picture: David Swift

2022 squad list:

Cody Parry*, Cooper Mangan, Charlie Guymer*, Oliver Kaluzyn, Lachlan Dooner, Paddy Cleary, Clancy Nott, Raiden Crowe*, Heath Mason*, Trae Fitzpatrick, Tyrell Adams, Harrison Quinn, Dylan Smith, Tom Fletcher*, Tom Fisher*, Ben Kelly, Bryce Catford-Potter, Jack Burrows, Lachlan Bush, Cooper Cross*, Zac Jones, Jayden Mallia, Zachary Wheeler

Coach’s Final Say:

“We’ve got a bit of mix this year of year, we’ve got some year 12 boys who are in their second or third season of Schoolboys Cup but then we’ve also got a couple of year 10 boys getting their first run.

I think Westfield and Patrician will be up there again this year. The boys are all very proud to be part of the squad and are even prioritising school footy over most other games at the moment.”

Hunter Sports High School

Hunter Sports High will be looking for a massive Peter Mulholland Cup season in 2022. Picture: Jonathan Ng

Coach: Anthony Gleeson

Captain: Taimana Elers

Past Cups: 0 (2016 semi-finalists)

Current NRL Alumni:

Phoenix Crossland, Chris Randall, Matt Croker, Pasami Saulo (Knights), Jesse Ramien (Sharks), Josh Jackson (Bulldogs), Tevita Pangai Jnr (Bulldogs)

2022 Squad List:

Mason Forbes, Max Fines, Benji Keene–O’Keefe, Harrison Sams*, Zac Wilkes, Lauchlyn Spicer*, Brandon Thompson*, Beau Slade, Taimana Elers, Kade Youlten*, Jayden Harris, Jett Woodward, Jakob Bacon, Jett Robards-Hassall, Rylee Moses Kincaid, Royden Taape*, Patrick Slade, Kyle McDermott

Coach’s Final Say:

“We have a young squad of players this year but many have been involved in the junior development teams from the Knights and Roosters.

This year we’re looking to consolidate our position back in the Schoolboy Cup and develop players for coming seasons. I think the teams to beat will be Westfields and Blacktown Patrician Brothers.”

Bass High School

Coach: Jon Wilson

Captain: Jonathan Sua

Past Cups: 0 (6 x University Shield, 5 x Buckley Shield)

Current NRL alumni:

Aaliyah Fasavalu, Raecene McGregor, Page McGregor and Sereana Naitokatoka (NRLW), Dale Finucane, Royce Hunt (Sharks), Isaac Lumelume (Bulldogs), Kane Bradley (Cowboys), William Kei (Tigers)

2022 squad list:

Coach’s Final Say:

“With our fields still underwater, it has been hard to give the players a proper preparation.

We have only lost three players from last season so we have a squad who knows each other and knows its game.

We’re trying to go away from just being tough through the middle, these days you have to be skilful with the ball or you won’t win the Cup. We are constantly trying to change up our game.” (* Denotes returning player)

Joshua Alhazim produced the clutch play in the final minutes to deliver Fairfield Patrician Brothers a thrilling victory against Holy Cross College.

Joshua Alhazim scored a gritty last-minute try to secure Patrician Brothers Fairfield a thrilling 20-18 victory over Holy Cross College in Round 2 of the NRL Schoolboy Cup.

It was a tight and seesawing affair at Ryde that ended in heartbreak for the home team, who led up until Alhazim’s clutch play in the final two minutes.

The atmosphere was nothing short of electric. Both schools sprinted through roaring guards of honour that spanned 30 metres onto the field.

Holy Cross’ passionate gladiator mascot paced up and down the sideline, revving up the home crowd. Patties’ fans were just as vocal — drumming and chanting all night.

After being denied an early try, Patties opened the scoring via flyer Sam Samani who dived over on the left. Minutes later Samani crashed over again to bag a double and extend his school’s lead to 8-0 lead.

Just when it looked like Patties would run away with it, Holy Cross’ debutant Cooper Wheelhouse stepped up.

The young hooker scored a gritty try from dummy half off the back of a blistering break by second rower Will Carroll.

Corey Akers seized back momentum when he crossed on Patties’ dominant the left edge.

Five-eighth Ati Teaupa then scored his own try off a brilliant left foot step and Holy Cross trailed 14-12 at half time.

Play seesawed in the second half, as both teams struggled to find the line.

Holy Cross’ skipper Jaxson Rahme barged over thanks to a beautiful offload by Sione Latoa Vaih and pushed Holy Cross ahead for the first time 18-14.

The final minutes saw both no.7s sin-binned and 12 on 12 go at it.

Both teams were courageous in defence but, in the end, it was Patties skipper Alhazim who crashed over in the last two minutes.

Taj’h Colquhoun slotted the conversion to seal his school’s thrilling 20-18 victory.
