A club which has consistently produced star talents such as Carl Webb, Brodie Croft and Beau Fermor has turned its attention to outside of the rugby league scene.

The Dalby Devils have again shown the power of a community’s willingness to give back, raising over $10,000 during their annual under 17 charity round held on Saturday.

This year, the funds will support the McGrath Foundation’s cancer care nursing services in Dalby, with the initiative proudly led by the club’s under 17 boys and girls sides.

Each year, the clubs under 17s select a cause close to their hearts, driving fundraising efforts.

It’s a long-standing tradition that reinforces gratitude to the Dalby community and teaches players about the dedication behind the scenes from club volunteers and committee members.

Players hit their goal through jersey sponsorships, bake stalls, and first try scorer sweeps across both matches.

The day was boosted by the support of visiting teams Southern Suburbs and Valleys, who also embraced the cause.

The Devils have a strong track record of raising funds for important causes, previously backing the Carl Webb Foundation and RUOK.

With finals on the horizon, Round 6 was nothing short of exhilarating in the Junior Statewide Competitions with thrilling performances across the board.

Competitions across the state have captivated fans, showcasing intense matchups and stellar athleticism.

Each game delivered excitement – from spectacular tries to insane finishes.

Teams have battled fiercely for every point, as the stakes rise higher with each round heading into finals.

Tweed Seagulls 18 def Burleigh Bears 12 at UAA Park

In a tightly contested match at UAA Park, the Tweed Seagulls maintained their undefeated streak this season with an 18-12 victory over the Burleigh Bears.

The game showcased some standout performances, including a double from Cooper Bai, who was key to the Seagulls’ success.

Despite the Seagulls’ offensive efforts, the Bears were never far behind, with Phillip Coates scoring two tries of his own, keeping the match competitive throughout.

Mackay Cutters 24 def Central Queensland Capras 12 at Rugby Park

The Mackay Cutters continued their undefeated run with a solid 24-12 victory over the Capras at Rugby Park.

Ethan Brose was the standout player, achieving a remarkable hat-trick, while Adam Davis’ four goals provided crucial points to seal the victory.

The Clydesdales showed great resilience, bouncing back from earlier defeats to claim an important victory at home.

Northern Pride 30 def Townsville Blackhawks 16 at Jack Manski Oval

Mafiou Cherif looked comfortable on the field as he crossed the white paint for a double.

Remarkably, Reeco Kirk found himself scoring twice in only two minutes of gameplay.

What was most impressive was not the strong offensive effort, but the team’s resilient defence that led to the Dolphins keeping the Seagulls scoreless.

The Magpies made quick work of the Devils on Saturday, led by a balanced offensive effort, including significant contributions from Elsiyah Laumatia.

Elsiyah Laumatia who bagged a double and David Bryenton, who kicked six from eight conversions.

A rare Wednesday make-up game was a thrilling match that showcased resilience from both teams, as Burleigh Bears and Brisbane Tigers played to an entertaining draw.

The Bears were led by tries from Gabrielle Lolohea, Liarna Barber-Salvation, Brianna Toopi, and Bella Thompson, while Samara Mackay-D succeeded with three conversions, one of which was a fortunate penalty goal.

The Tigers matched them in the effort, with Liliele Vaitolo, Zerenity Tuala, Lishainah Ulugia, and Namoe Gesa all crossing the line, as Lishainah Ulugia also converted her three tries.

It was a gripping showcase of skill, with both teams finishing on equal terms.

Norths Devils 24 def Souths Logan Magpies 22 at Marsden State High School

In a fierce contest, the Norths Devils edged out Souths Logan Magpies by just two points.

The Devils displayed a balanced attack with tries from Selupevaelei Sipaia, Eva Steers, Te Ngaroahiahi Fanua Awhina Rimoni, Riana Le’afa-Paki, and Courtney Tyrell.

Bailey Webb added two goals to seal the victory.

Despite producing a strong performance, including two tries from Danielle-Elizabeth Tutakangahau, the Magpies fell short, demonstrating that they will continue to fight for their first win of the season.

Sunshine Coast Falcons 32 def Western Clydesdales 12 at Toowoomba Sports Ground

The Sunshine Coast Falcons maintained their strong form with a commanding 32-12 victory over the Western Clydesdales.

With a dominant performance, the Falcons scored tries through Bliss Wilkins, Jessica Cross, Lila Parr, Mia Vines, Dianne Ladewig, and Takoda Thompson. Mackayla Champion and Deena Budby successfully converted three goals, showcasing an impressive attacking display.

The Clydesdales managed two tries from Charlotte Collie and Mia Byrnes off the back, but they struggled to keep pace, ultimately succumbing to a tough defeat.

Ipswich Jets put forth a solid team effort to secure a well-deserved win against the Wide Bay Bulls.

With two early tries from Tomi Wilson, the Jets displayed their attacking flair. Harrison Vidler’s four conversions ensured that Ipswich maintained control throughout the match.

Despite Thomas Taipari’s sole try for the Bulls, they struggled to make an impact as they continue to search for the first win of the season.

In an exciting showdown, Tweed Seagulls emerged victorious over the Burleigh Bears by a narrow margin.

Viliami Fifita led the charge with a brace of tries, supported by Jai Bilish and Austin Desmond who also scored.

The Bears pushed back fiercely with tries from Kingston Seve and Cornelius Kelsall, but their efforts fell just short.

Both teams did the majority of their damage in the first half before a strong focus on defensive effort in the second half resulted in neither team being able to add any additional points.

Wynnum Manly Seagulls 42 def Redcliffe Dolphins 10 at Kayo Stadium

The Wynnum Manly Seagulls delivered a resounding performance in a commanding win over the winless Redcliffe Dolphins.

Bailen Noy is wasting no time, collecting a try in the second minute of play. Followed by Ezekiel Jones, Barry Taukolo, Devine Timu, Daniel Cash, and Majah-Jose Peachey, all scoring tries, while Dean Tauaa added two more to the tally.

Lachlan Hooker converted five kicks to blow out the score. Redcliffe managed to respond with efforts from Kyron Arthy and Dallas Carmody, but the Seagulls’ dominance was evident throughout the match.

A Wednesday make-up game due to Cyclone Alfred saw the Brisbane Tigers continue their impressive undefeated streak, dominating the Burleigh Bears with a convincing 46-16 victory.

Enah Desic was a standout player, not only scoring a try but also contributing five goals.

Tiahna Kanawi shone with four tries, showcasing her incredible speed and skill. The Tigers’ powerful attack proved too much for the Bears, who struggled to keep pace despite attempts from Marley Tauri, Jayda Collins and Chezaan Kainui.

This victory keeps the Tigers atop the table.

Sunshine Coast Falcons 16 def Western Clydesdales 10 at Toowoomba Sports Ground

In a tightly contested match, the Sunshine Coast Falcons edged out the Western Clydesdales with a narrow 16-10 win.

Lily Bain and Tahlee Donald put in solid performances – scoring tries to secure the Falcons’ early lead.

Western Clydesdales fought hard, with Sedeequa Nelson notably scoring a try in the opening seconds of the game, but ultimately fell short in a thrilling finish, leaving both teams eager to build on their performances in future matches.

Central Queensland Capras 28 def Mackay Cutters 4 at Rugby Park

The Capras displayed their dominance with a strong 28-4 victory against the Mackay Cutters.

Jorgie Mitchell was remarkable, scoring two tries, one in the first minute of the game.

Capras’ offence was relentless, and despite a late try from Jade Williams for the Cutters, it wasn’t enough to shift the momentum.

CQ Capras remain firmly in second place, undefeated alongside the Brisbane Tigers.

The Magpies’ balanced attack overwhelmed the Devils, who managed only two tries from Paige Stagg and Simaima Vainga.

Tweed Seagulls crowned premiers in undefeated Mal Meninga Cup season

The Tweed Seagulls stuck to the script in Saturday’s Mal Meninga Cup grand final, finishing season 2024 undefeated to be crowned premiers.

In a dominant performance at Redcliffe’s Kayo Stadium, the Seagulls put their Gold Coast rivals Burleigh Bears to the sword with a 36-12 victory.

It was a fitting finish to a year in which the Seagulls not only ended as minor premiers but also went through the season without recording a single loss and just one draw.

Coach Sam Meskell said he was impressed with how his team overcame the pressure of being the competition leaders to execute against the Bears on Saturday.

“I’m very happy for the boys mostly,” he said.

“They do all the hard work. It’s been a really good season in terms of results and getting the minor premiership and going through undefeated.

“They probably felt a little bit of pressure today so really happy for them that they got the job done at the end of the road.

“Being undefeated… it wasn’t really a focus. I didn’t want to make a deal of it because it applies more pressure. But the boys will be quite proud of it.

“There were games where we behind and we came over the top and there were games where we led so they found a way to not get beat all season and that’s a credit to their resilience.”

Tweed were the first to cross, with Cory Pearse and Billy Wellard combining to capitalise on a Burleigh mistake within the opening minute.

From here however, Burleigh had all the momentum and were firing in attack, constantly threatening with the ball in hand.

They managed to hit back quickly through Jett Bryce in the sixth minute and then earned back-to-back sets, increasing the pressure on Tweed.

It required the Seagulls to defend repetitive sets on the line and this was ultimately where the game was won, as Tweed did not leak a single point in a tense 15 minute period.

A change in momentum then saw Tweed start to runaway with the game as they scored three more tries before the break to go into halftime up 24-6.

Meskell said that defensive period in the first half was the key.

“It was probably everything,” he said.

“If we cracked there and conceded two or three then all of a sudden we’re chasing the game. That was massive. Luckily when we got an opportunity, we capitalised.”

Tweed captain Zane Harrison was named player of the match for his precision and calm nature in attack, while Meskell also gave praise to Wellard and Pearse for stepping up where needed.

Winger Tyson Ploegsma bagged a hat-trick in the victory while Wellard’s opening four-pointer was his first of the season.

QRL statewide competitions structure changes

The Mal Meninga Cup will now be an u19 competition in line with the NSWRL SG Ball Cup

QRL aligns pathways and strengthens community leagues

Queensland Rugby League can today confirm the implementation of a new statewide competitions structure for aspirational male and female players.

The 2024 season will see the removal of the male Under 21 competition, with the current Cyril Connell Challenge and Mal Meninga Cup competitions moving to Under 17 and Under 19 age groups.

The new structure will also align with female competition age groups following confirmation of the introduction of an Under 17 girls competition to support the existing Under 19s.

Both female competitions have been structured to accommodate future expansion and competition growth, and will be underpinned by the Future Maroons Academy supporting the City / Country Under 17 and Ruby / Sapphires Under 19 programs.

The elevation of under-age male competitions aligns with the junior representative program in New South Wales, as well as the proposed Under 17 interstate game and the existing Under 19 clash.

The Under 19 male competition will be played over an extended period to compensate for the removal of Under 21s, with a proposed 10 round season and four week finals series.

Both male competitions will continue to accommodate school competitions as part of the existing pathway.

QRL chief executive officer Ben Ikin said the revamp would allow clubs to sharpen their focus on talent development and talent specialisation.

“Our statewide clubs are best positioned to develop talent for the elite game – and we believe the best 20 and 21 year-old players in the state are capable of playing in the Hostplus Cup and BMD Premiership,” Ikin said.

“Data also suggests that the majority of players in this age group already have been identified, meaning they hold NRL or NRL Development contracts, or are Hostplus Cup and BMD Premiership contracted players.”

Ikin said the changes would serve to strengthen community rugby league.

“This model provides statewide competition clubs a better opportunity to align with their community league affiliates,” Ikin said.

“It’s also important to remember that players who may take longer to develop still have a pathway to open age QRL statewide competitions via local senior grade competitions in their area.”

“The changes to competition structures are further underpinned by the 13-15 year old development programs delivered around the state.

“There are currently Under 15 boys programs being delivered around Queensland, with rebel Development Series games scheduled for the upcoming school holidays.

“These programs will remain a critical part of the talent identification process for Under 17 boys and girls.”

QRL announce new home for livestreaming : Queensland Rugby League and Cluch have joined forces to offer an exclusive streaming platform to the rugby league community and fans of the game.

The QPlus.tv platform will feature all QRL statewide competitions as well as regional and representative fixtures that have previously been livestreamed.

More than 400 games will be streamed to QPlus.tv across 2022, including all Hostplus Cup, QRLW Premiership, Hastings Deering Colts, Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup, Harvey Norman Under 19 Girls and Cyril Connell Challenge games.

The dedicated QPlus.tv platform will help leagues across Queensland customise their user experience and offer economic returns and support for the clubs, sponsors and communities.

QRL is excited to partner with Cluch and launch a branded platform to help grow the sport amongst the entire rugby league network; the deal includes access to live vision, replays and round highlights.

QRL senior digital manager Mitch Wilson said QRL was delighted with what the partnership meant for the game.

QRL’s livestreaming

“The QRL’s livestreaming activity has grown significantly in the last few years and the launch of QPlus.tv is the next step in that journey,” Wilson said.

“When we surveyed fans in 2021, 78 per cent of fans called out that our top priority should be increasing the number of games available live and on replay. We are responding directly to that strong demand from fans.”

Cluch managing director Gus Seebeck said Cluch was thrilled to partner with QRL for season 2022 and offer “an abundance of exclusive rugby league content made available to fans on the dedicated QPlus.tv platform”.

“This is a fantastic result for not only the clubs, players, friends and families of players, but also all rugby league and sport enthusiasts around the world,” Seebeck said.

“We couldn’t be happier to bring this content to thousands of rugby league fans.”

The QRL platform will be available to watch live and on-demand on the dedicated QPlus.tv platform and will also be accessible via Cluch TV platforms.

Fans will have the option to subscribe to QPlus.TV with three available offerings – annual, monthly or a weekend ‘round’ pass.

A share of revenue raised from subscription revenue, and vital advertising opportunities, will be distributed to clubs and leagues who feature on Qplus.tv.

Queensland Rugby League has today distributed current Queensland Government advice on vaccinations for community and statewide competitions across the state.

The information communicated to stakeholders provided a summary based on current Queensland Government advice and should only be used to support club decision-making.

Future updates on this matter will reference two key guiding principles:

Government and health advice

The most recent advice from the Queensland Government is

There is no requirement for persons to be vaccinated to attend community sport participation spaces.

This is inclusive of spectators, participants, employees and volunteers.

From today, December 17, there will be a requirement for individuals attending hospitality venues (including licensed leagues / sporting clubs) to be vaccinated.

For example, if a rugby league club has both

Sporting facilities and restaurant / bar facilities, unvaccinated people can only access the sporting or exercise facilities. They are not permitted to enter the clubhouse / hospitality facilities.

This is not inclusive of ‘takeaway’ canteens or can bars.

Key stakeholder requirement

Further to the above, there may be additional vaccination requirements from key stakeholder groups that support the delivery of rugby league.

These may include but are not limited to:

Land or building owners imposing the requirement for visitors to be vaccinated prior to entering facilities or venues
Service providers requiring individuals to be vaccinated prior to utilising a service.

For example, transport companies

Capacity limits at venues, noting the current direction confirming that events catering for 5000 or more people require all attendees above the age of 16 to be vaccinated.

The above update is consistent with the detailed advice provide by the Department of Sport and Recreation on Thursday, December 16.
