A single moment stranded in time between two young flyers has defined a massive year of NRL Schoolboys Cup – but in the end, only one could prevail. Watch the full match

Watch the full game replay from an epic grand final clash between Palm Beach Currumbin and Patrician Brothers Blacktown as they battle it out for the NRL Schoolboys Cup National title.

The Steeden floated high above the Cbus Super Stadium turf.

With 90 seconds left in the NRL Schoolboys Cup national final, and two points bewteen the sides, time stood still.

The entire stadium crowd drew a collective breath as opposing wingers Patrician Brothers’ Chad Riddle and Palm Beach Currumbin’s Beau Hatmann leapt as the footy tumbled down from the sky – and Hartmann prevailed.

He picked Riddle’s pocket and surged towards the stripe untouched with 90 seconds left on the clock to hand Palm Beach Currumbin a two-point lead – just minutes after he had dropped a similar chance at full stretch for what would’ve been a certain try.

The moment meant Palm Beach Currumbin clinched their third NRL national schoolboys title in a gripping 18-16 triumph over Patrician Brothers College, Blacktown. It was a win as special as they come, in a match as gripping as they come.

“I don’t even know, it was a perfect kick,” said Hartmann of the magical try after the game.

“I couldn’t have done it without Zane (haflback Harrison). It came down to luck really.

“I can’t describe it, it’s just so good, it’s the best feeling ever.”

The result was a repeat of 2018 where the same outcome ensued between the two schools. On that day, Tom Dearden was the star for Palm Beach Currumbin.

This time, it was another Reds half in Zane Harrison.

Harrison was amazing. The final try was just reward for a great kicking display for the full 60 minutes, and his defence was as good as his attack.

Twice he scooped up the footy in dangerous territory and scurried out of the in-goal to save PBC’s blushes.

PBC coach Tim Maccan was full of praise

PBC coach Tim Maccan was full of praise for his star half, who is signed to the Titans and seems destined to have a long career lighting up Cbus Super Stadium ahead of him.

“He’s the type of player where you just give him the keys and he drives it for you. I love him. He’s been my halfback for the last three years and he’s been unbelievable,” Maccan said.

PBC defended gallantly all day, fighting tooth and nail under immense pressure against a star-studded Patties Blacktown outfit containing four Australian Schoolboys representatives.

The earlier two tries came courtesy of Reuben Tamariki, who spearheaded the Palm Beach Currumbin forward pack all day and earned himself a double thanks to some brilliant hole running.

“He’s had his best season this year, he really dug deep at times when we needed him and he did a great job today,” Maccan said.

The Reds coach was equally impressed with Marley Igasan, who had been absent from the side for the past three weeks.

“He was unbelievable, he played almost a whole game …. he’s been training his butt off in our extended group, he was amazing.”

PBC had led for much of the second half until Pats Blacktown five-eighth and co-captain Jared Haywood turned the match on its head in a matter of minutes with two superb cut out passes to set up back-to-back tries.

His first floater sent gun lock Tyson Sangalang under the posts, before he broke apart the Reds edge defence in a matter of seconds as he slowed himself to draw in the defence before picking out Riddle.

It’s no wonder Dragons coach Shane Flanagan rates front-rower Jacob Halangahu so highly given he delivered bruising run after bruising run through the middle and drove his side into very dangerous territory.

The loss continues a sorry streak for the proud Sydney school, who have just a lone national title to show for eight national final appearances.

For Maccan, a simple age-old cliche told him everything he needed to know. And it was one that proved hard to argue with come full-time.

“I just told the boys that (Patrician) have a lot of individual champions in their team,” he said.

“But we’re a champion team and that’ll always beat it.”

For Palm Beach Currumbin, they will aim to shed 12 months of heartache after they were emphatically blown off the park by a Lachlan Galvin-led Westfields Sports High in last year’s national final.

For Patrician Brothers Blacktown, it is about avenging their loss in the 2018 national final, when they went down to the same Red Army they come face-to-face with on Wednesday.

NRL SBC INSIDER: Palm Beach warhorse makes Titanic move for future

While that grand final six years ago was littered with future State of Origin stars like Stephen Crichton and Tom Dearden, this year’s grand final will also be laden with players with plenty of their own promise.

Check out the stars of the future set to break the national final wide open below.

Jacob Halangahu, Patrician Brothers Blacktown

Position: Backrow, NRL club: Dragons

The most damaging player in schoolboys rugby league. Halangahu has a competitive fire that cannot be extinguished. He will hit hard and run even harder, keep an eye out for a game-changing offload.

While he is definitely in a mould of his own, the Dragons SG Ball winner plays a similar game to Titans big man David Fifita.

Zane Harrison, Palm Beach Currumbin

Position: Halfback, NRL club: Titans

The mercurial halfback will make a welcome return for Palm Beach Currumbin in the national final after his well-publicised absence from the state final due to concussion. The Titans have just extended the young gun’s contract in a sign of just what he brings to the party. A natural leader on the field, he will have a hand in everything PBC does.

Lachlan Coinakis, Patrician Brothers Blacktown

Position: Hooker, NRL club: Eels

The Eels young gun plays eyes up football behind the ruck, and will be able to spot an issue with the markers before they realise there is one. Every play for the Patties side begins with Coinakis, and the Australian Schoolboys representative will be determined to get them on the front foot early.

Sam Stephenson, Palm Beach Currumbin

Position: Centre, NRL club: Titans

The damaging ballrunner can be even more damaging without it.

The Titans young gun, who spent a pre-season with their NRL side last Summer, has been a revelation out wide for Palm Beach Currumbin in recent years.

He was also part of the Queensland Under-19 Origin squad this year and picked in the Australian Schoolboys side.

Jhett Sydir running the footy in the Schoolboy Cup National Final Cup final between Palm Beach Currumbin and Patrician Brothers Blacktown Stadium. Photo : Steve Montgomery

Jhett Sydir, Patrician Brothers, Blacktown

Position: Halfback, NRL club: Panthers

He hasn’t played a game of rugby league in more than two months, but don’t expect Sydir to be putting the handbrake on in this one.

He targeted the national final as his return, and will be desperate to deliver that premiership glory to his school in his final year. Possesses a strong running game and will be the chief organiser for the Patties attack.

Ultimate QLD schoolboys team of 2023

We name your ultimate QLD schoolboys team of the season

The votes are in and now we can reveal the ultimate Queensland schoolboys team of the season as decided by you. Find out who made the starting side here. Did readers get it right?

The future of rugby league in Queensland is in safe hands.

This year the Sunshine State’s best and brightest schoolboy rugby league stars proved themselves against elite opposition.

With the 2023 season wrapped we asked our readers to vote for their favourite schoolboy league stars and now we can reveal the ultimate side.

Ultimate QLD schoolboys team of 2023 The Cathedral College fullback Mutua Brown.

1. Mutua Brown (TCC)

One of the most exciting prospects in the game, Brown was instrumental in TCC making the Dolphins Cup grand final. The Australian Schoolboys representative finished the competition with a bag of tries.

2. Mataio Tapau-Bon (St Brendan’s)

Tapau-Bon was a standout for St Brendan’s. His ability to finish off backline movements and shut down opposition attacks was second to none.

3. Will Shears (St Patrick’s)

Shears captained the Mackay Cutters’ Under 18 team this year. He can play multiple positions and is already contracted to North Queensland Cowboys.

4. Sam Durkin (Emmaus)

Durkin was one of Emmaus’s best week in, week out. His carries out of yardage and his try-scoring strike rate was outstanding.

5. Bailey Anderson (St Patrick’s)

The Melbourne Storm contracted winger is a strong finisher who expertly positions himself to make the most of the opportunities his team creates. Anderson finished this year’s Aaron Payne Cup as the leading tryscorer.

Queensland schoolboys teams of the season

Teams of the season for the Langer Trophy, Dolphin Cup and Payne Cup have been in recent weeks, featuring some outstanding talents from across the state.

See the Langer Trophy team of the year here

See the Dolphin Cup team of the year here

See the Payne Cup team of the year here

6. Clancy Hohn (Emmaus)

Hohn was Emmaus’ best all year. His ability to create for players around him has been a real highlight. His defence is also unheralded, which is a real feather in his cap.

7. Jaxon Purdue (St Patrick’s)

The co-captain and North Queensland Cowboys contracted star lead by example this year, took control of his fair share of games and finished the Aaron Payne Cup tied as the leading try scorer.

8. Baylee Meilland (Emmaus)

Meilland has had an enormous 2023. Capras under-18 and Capricornia open schoolboys 18s player, he is an all-round leader of the forward pack.

9 Xavier Kerrisk (St Patrick’s)

The Mackay Cutters star and North Queensland Cowboys contracted star troubled plenty of defences with his running out of dummy half this season.s

10 Alex Leapai (Mabel Park SHS)

The No. 1 prop in the competition, Leapai was Mabel Park’s front row battleship, their spiritual leader. The Gold Coast Titans have a good one here.

11 Elijah Tapau Taylor (Kirwan)

The towering backrower will head south at the end of the year to link with the Parramatta Eels. Single-handedly turned the Aaron Payne Cup semi-final in his team’s favour with a second half try scoring double earlier this year.

12 Jack Biles (TCC)

Biles’s game has gone to another level under the guidance of mentor Tony Martin. His ability to beat the first defender and his competitiveness have been a real marker of his importance to TCC’s game plan in 2023.

13. John Fineanganofo (Redcliffe SHS)

Redcliffe SHS’s Australian schoolboys representative played injured from round 4, but still makes our squad with ease. Clever ballplayer who could also play tough in the middle or run on the fringe of the ruck.

OUR BENCH

Braelen Marsh (hooker, St Brendans)

Tyler Shandiman (forward, St Patricks)

Carter Ford (forward, St Brendans)

Bailey McConnell (five-eighth, PBC SHS)

2022 will see an exciting new addition to the facilities at Keebra Park with the unveiling of a new state of the art strength and conditioning centre.

Keebra Park leaves No stone Unturned with new state of the art strength and conditioning centre

This centre will allow more students from across our sporting Academies, access to development opportunities under the supervision of a team of qualified strength and condition coaches as they pursue their sporting goals.

Meanwhile our current year 11 students have been making the most of working out in the old gymnasium in preparation for the 2022 season.

This old facility has always been a fairly spartan building with the discipline and determination of the athlete, being far more an indicator of success that the equipment itself and while we are all looking forward eagerly to our new state of the art facility, the ethics and attitudes of those that came before will no doubt echo through its girders and foundations and guide the next generation onwards to success.

YOUTH ACADEMY

With youth rugby becoming so competitive and the sheer fact that every school team and club is chasing the win we see countless youth athletes missing physical development.

The inability to move in their own bodies combined with the lack of coordination to produce speed and power causes huge issues as they progress through age group footy into senior level.

Over the past 12mths we have been developing our NextGen (u10-u14) and YoungGunz (u15-u18s) programs where we have helped athletes make State Teams, Regional Squads and move up divisions in their club in both league, union, athletics, swimming and netball.

We cover everything from 1on1 to squad based sessions as well as online programming if your not local to our athlete specialized training centre.

St. Augustines win QLD Schoolboy Trophy

Lockyer Valley v St Augustine’s in the Qld Schoolboy Trophy Final

Watch a replay of St Augustines Vs Lockyer District.

St Augustine’s College scored two tries in the last four minutes to beat Lockyer Valley 20-18.

The winning try came less than two minutes from the end, scored by second rower Lachlan Magill.

A booming sideline conversion by Billy Vincent – his second of the game – then carried his team ahead.

St Augustine’s College came from behind to win the trophy.

Lockyer Valley had led but Caiban Thaiday’s second try, then Magill’s try and Vincent’s conversion gave the FNQ side victory.

St Augustine’s College coach Chris O’Farrell said he was most proud of his team’s resilience throughout the season.

“And their determination to stay in the fight.

“They were their worst enemies pretty much the whole game but they dug deep in the last few minutes. They have shown that all throughout the season.’’

What a match it was.

Two intercept tries lit up the grand final, with first St Augustine’s Thaiday outlasting Lockyer Valley fullback Cooper Leston to score – and five minutes late Lockyer’s Caeleb Nagan sprinting 95m untouched.

Those two thrilling sprint tries saw Lockyer Valley lead 14-10, setting the scene for a bumper last 17 minutes.

Earlier, Lockyer Valley SHS seized the advantage – but only just – with a composed, constructive first half of football.

Enterprising centre Shoneton Karapen snapped a 4-all deadlock in the lead up to the break, outflanking the St Augustine’s defence which had given up a little too much room on the outside.

With five-eighth Mason Potter and fullback Cooper Listen providing slick service, and Lockyer District forwards Logan Hazard, Clayton Andrew and Connor Page driving ahead, Lockery District were in top.

Both No.4s traded tries in the opening 20 minutes of the grand final, with Hayden Dunn plunging over in the corner for Lockyer Valley after subtle ball play by Cooper Listen and Mason Potter in the lead-up.

Lockyer Valley had the better of the territory battle, with a fast moving defensive line contributing to keep St Augustine’s pinned.

But the first chance St Augustine’s had in attack zone, they scored, with right centre Kaleb Eaton crossing.

Late in the first half Dunn almost scored again, but was bent back by last ditch goal line defence.

St Augustines College, Cairns QLD – 20

TRIES : (4) Kaleb Eaton, (3) Caiban Thaiday 2, (12) Lochlan McGill
GOALS : Billy Vincent 2/4

Lockyer District SHS, Gatton QLD – 18

TRIES : (4) Hayden Dunn 2, (3) Shoneton Karapen, (5) Caleb Nagan
GOALS : Hayden Dunn 1/4

Half Time : 4 – 8
FULL TIME : 20 – 18

NRL Schoolboys Cup grand final dynamic duo: PBC SHS pair Tom Weaver Oskar Bryant meet in a birthing suite; Marsden SHS pair Jieye Maua’i and Chris Faagutu mates from way back.

Tune in LIVE to see the best schoolboys in Queensland battle it out for the titles.

It is little wonder Palm Beach Currumbin SHS pair Tom Weaver and Oskar Bryant seem to be able to read each other’s minds on the field – after all they were first together on the day Bryant was born.

Halfback Weaver and hooker Bryant will be two of the dynamic duos involved in today’s NRL Schoolboys Cup grand final to be played between Langer Trophy champions Marsden SHS and PBC SHS at Kougari Oval.

The three matches livestreamed by News Corps today will be:

— Caloundra SHS v Mabel Park (De Vere Cup, 12.30),

— Redcliffe SHS v Clairvaux MacKillop College (open Gee Cup, 1.45pm)

— Marsden SHS v PBC SHS (NRL Schoolboys Cup, 3pm).

Weaver and Bryant, both Gold Coast Titans signings, have had parallel lives since Weaver was in the birthing suite the day Bryant was born.

“My dad (Aaron) and his dad (Glenn) played footy together and my mum (Renee) and his mum (Joanne) went to school together,’’ Bryant explained.

Oskar Bryant, left, and Tom Weaver – together again.

“I have known him for 18 years this year, and have been playing footy with him since under 6s at Cudgen (northern NSW),’’ Bryant said.

“Every team we have made, we have played together.

“It (our combination) just comes naturally. I just look at him and the play he calls, I just put the ball straight on his chest.’’

Tom said: “We have been mates since we were born.

“We have just grown up in the same families basically – our families are still really close and that just led to us playing footy together since we were six-years-old.

“It really helps out on the field.

“He knows when I want the ball and there are times when I am not in the right position to get a kick away or put a play on and he will run it himself or kick it himself.

“We are instinctive – that we know what each other needs.’’

PBC SHS Tim Maccan said it was an uncanny association which reminded him of when he played with Brad Davis at both school (PBC SHS) and Intrust Super Cup (Seagulls) level.

PBC SHS five-eighth Michael Roberts said it was great playing alongside Weaver and Bryant.

“Tom directs the boys into the right place and Oskar is eyes up – he knows when to go at the right times,’’ Roberts said.

Marsden SHS also have their own version of Batman and Robyn – Jieye Maua’i and Chris Faagutu.

Both backrowers, the boys first met playing under 9s at Logan Brothers have enjoyed plenty of good times together wearing the Marsden SHS jersey.

“I remember training with him in under 9s and we got to know each other,’’ Maua’i said.

Maua’i said they had a great understanding of each other on the field.

“He leads by example and sets the standards for the middles and everyone in the team,’’ Maua’i said.

“And off the field he is a good person to know.’’

Faagutu said his mate Maua’i was a quiet achiever. “He works hard, tackles hard and achieves a lot.’’

Filisi Frost (Coombabah SHS)

Filisi Frost (Wing) – wasn’t a certain starter going into the season but he has scored his fair share of tries this season and has saved just as many with some great defensive reads. He is an example of someone who has worked really hard in training and has been rewarded for it.

Ranil Shankar (Mabel Park SHS)

Ranil Shankar has been a sparkling diamond for Mabel Park SHS in its Langer Trophy debut season.

A little hooker, he has played every minute and is a pocket dynamo.

Because of his size, opposition players have targeted him all season. “But there is no recollection of him missing any tackles,’’ said his coach Lee Addison.

Keano Kini (Palm Beach Currumbin SHS)

While his performances have been no surprise to his coach or team mates, other schools now have him on their tip sheet.

A year 11 student, he has been a major part of the Langer Trophy success this season.

He has speed when returning the ball, strong carries and footwork that have made him very hard to stop one on one.

A Gold Coast Titans contracted player, he moved from New Zealand in January where he starred in NZ Rugby League competitions, including being named Player of the Tournament at the Schools under 15 National Carnival in 2019.

He also played for the New Zealand under 16s Team against Samoa as a 15-year-old.

Kini was a member of the successful 2021 Tweed Seagulls Mal Meninga Cup squad that won the State Final in May, although injury cut his season short after three rounds.

PJ Potasi (Keebra Park SHS)

PJ Potasi has added a threatening dimension to Keebra Park SHS’ potent attack with ball playing skills that most middles do not have.

He has worked hard on his fitness and, with more miles in his legs, he has got better the longer the season has progressed.

A year 11 student, Potasi now has the challenge of finishing the season strongly and should be a forward leader in 2022.

Jarvis Yeatman (Ipswich SHS)

Yeatman started the season off the bench but it is no coincidence Ipswich’s second half of the season surge has coincided with him winning a starting position at lock. He is a work horse every side needs, and tidies up a lot of tackles around the middle as well as bringing energy to the people around him.

Interestingly Ipswich SHS’s worst performances of the season – the second half fade out against PBC SHS, and Marsden and Keebra Park – were when he was injured.

Year 10 student Taelon Te-Whiu Hopa has channelled the likes of ball-playing NRL forwards John Asiata-Joseph Paulo by displaying amazing versatility in the Langer Trophy this season.

A Gold Coast TItans contracted forward, he has stepped up to play every game in the opens at second row, front row and even in the halves where has covered for the injured Cassius Cowley. He is super skilful, tough and covers multiple positions.

His teammate Will Semu, although renowned for his ability on the field, has also impressed with his leadership qualities off the field despite being a year 10 student.

Bristowe Murray (Wavell SHS)

Murray is a grade 11 student who has forced his way into the Langer Trophy side. A good team man and popular with his team mates, he plays the utility of the bench and has scored a couple of important tries, while having impact off the bench. He can play every position, although No.9 and No.13 has suited him best.
