Ultimate QLD schoolboys team of 2023

We name your ultimate QLD schoolboys team of the season

The votes are in and now we can reveal the ultimate Queensland schoolboys team of the season as decided by you. Find out who made the starting side here. Did readers get it right?

The future of rugby league in Queensland is in safe hands.

This year the Sunshine State’s best and brightest schoolboy rugby league stars proved themselves against elite opposition.

With the 2023 season wrapped we asked our readers to vote for their favourite schoolboy league stars and now we can reveal the ultimate side.

Ultimate QLD schoolboys team of 2023 The Cathedral College fullback Mutua Brown.

1. Mutua Brown (TCC)

One of the most exciting prospects in the game, Brown was instrumental in TCC making the Dolphins Cup grand final. The Australian Schoolboys representative finished the competition with a bag of tries.

2. Mataio Tapau-Bon (St Brendan’s)

Tapau-Bon was a standout for St Brendan’s. His ability to finish off backline movements and shut down opposition attacks was second to none.

3. Will Shears (St Patrick’s)

Shears captained the Mackay Cutters’ Under 18 team this year. He can play multiple positions and is already contracted to North Queensland Cowboys.

4. Sam Durkin (Emmaus)

Durkin was one of Emmaus’s best week in, week out. His carries out of yardage and his try-scoring strike rate was outstanding.

5. Bailey Anderson (St Patrick’s)

The Melbourne Storm contracted winger is a strong finisher who expertly positions himself to make the most of the opportunities his team creates. Anderson finished this year’s Aaron Payne Cup as the leading tryscorer.

Queensland schoolboys teams of the season

Teams of the season for the Langer Trophy, Dolphin Cup and Payne Cup have been in recent weeks, featuring some outstanding talents from across the state.

6. Clancy Hohn (Emmaus)

Hohn was Emmaus’ best all year. His ability to create for players around him has been a real highlight. His defence is also unheralded, which is a real feather in his cap.

7. Jaxon Purdue (St Patrick’s)

The co-captain and North Queensland Cowboys contracted star lead by example this year, took control of his fair share of games and finished the Aaron Payne Cup tied as the leading try scorer.

8. Baylee Meilland (Emmaus)

Meilland has had an enormous 2023. Capras under-18 and Capricornia open schoolboys 18s player, he is an all-round leader of the forward pack.

9 Xavier Kerrisk (St Patrick’s)

The Mackay Cutters star and North Queensland Cowboys contracted star troubled plenty of defences with his running out of dummy half this season.s

10 Alex Leapai (Mabel Park SHS)

The No. 1 prop in the competition, Leapai was Mabel Park’s front row battleship, their spiritual leader. The Gold Coast Titans have a good one here.

11 Elijah Tapau Taylor (Kirwan)

The towering backrower will head south at the end of the year to link with the Parramatta Eels. Single-handedly turned the Aaron Payne Cup semi-final in his team’s favour with a second half try scoring double earlier this year.

12 Jack Biles (TCC)

Biles’s game has gone to another level under the guidance of mentor Tony Martin. His ability to beat the first defender and his competitiveness have been a real marker of his importance to TCC’s game plan in 2023.

13. John Fineanganofo (Redcliffe SHS)

Redcliffe SHS’s Australian schoolboys representative played injured from round 4, but still makes our squad with ease. Clever ballplayer who could also play tough in the middle or run on the fringe of the ruck.

OUR BENCH

Braelen Marsh (hooker, St Brendans)

Tyler Shandiman (forward, St Patricks)

Carter Ford (forward, St Brendans)

Bailey McConnell (five-eighth, PBC SHS)

Langer Trophy, Walters Cup live stream: Ipswich SHS v Marsden SHS, Langer Trophy, Walters Cup

Brisbane Broncos had their hands all over this one as Marsden issued a warning to their Langer Trophy rivals by putting last year’s national champions to the sword. Relive all the action.

Watch the full replay of the Langer Trophy Round 7 – Ipswich SHS v Marsden SHS (Langer).

The future of the Brisbane Broncos was glimpsed at the North Ipswich Reserve when contracted halfback Coby Black and winger Saxon Innes combined for the try of the season in Marsden State High School’s 30-12 victory over Ipswich State High.

Innes retrieved a kick 15 metres out from his own line, returned it to centre field before a deadly sidestep saw him plunge through two defenders and scorch away down the midfield.

On his hip in support was Wynnum-Manly Seagulls club teammate Black, who finished the try which moved Marsden ahead 20-6 just shy of the halftime break.

Innes is a light stepper and possesses freakish speed – and that’s why he is one of the Langer Trophy’s best finishers.

Earlier, Ipswich hit the scoreboard first through centre LJ Nonu after an Izzy Mafi bomb bounced into his grasp. They led 6-0, but quickly Marsden found their groove once Queensland Schoolboys centre Will Semu dotted one down.

Black then slotted a penalty goal, and made a tremendous trysaving cover tackle on prolific Ipswich winger Alton Naiyep, who was brought down a metre shy of the line.

Marsden turned this pressure situation into a score and a subsequent eight-point-buffer when a trademark Lewis Symonds offload put Patrick Kailahi in under the posts.

Marsden led 20-6 at the break after that spectacular try to end the first, and then 24-6 when Symonds scored a try of his own eight minutes into the second half.

This time it was a hard run from centre Kylem Vunipola, and an inside step from the explosive Xavier Atoa, which undid the Ipswich defence.

A try was just what the doctor ordered for the home side and it was darting dummy-half Lesayne Tuiasau who was the man for the job.

It was a four-pointer which swung momentum back in Ipswich’s favour, but they would rue not making the most of their opportunities when they had possession close to Marsden’s line.

Atoa then put the nail in the coffin at 30-12 when he planted a deft grubber kick impressively engineered in field by Semu, who was in full stride down the left touchline.

Trusty Ipswich forwards Oliva Iaulualo, Kane Self and David Leota were tireless, while Tyler Peckham-Harris added a punch out of hooker in a loss which will serve as motivation heading into the quarter finals on August 9.

WALTERS CUP

Marsden oozed class in their dominant 32-0 victory over Stretton College.

The Makos ran in six tries, and left two out there when their final two tries were disallowed.

They were in fine form, with quick ball out of dummy half from Tayshaarn Tonga, and deadly finishing from winger Quinn Timperon delivering the win at the North Ipswich Reserve.

Line breaks came hard and fast, and once they scored their first, it looked a done deal for the well-oiled Logan side, which was certainly boosted by a quick-thinking fullback in Caleb Cresswell.

REPLAY: Stretton College v Marsden SHS (Walters)

Watch the replay of the Langer Trophy Round 7 – Stretton College v Marsden SHS (Walters)

Cresswell scored the try of the day with a chip and chase that left the Stretton defenders stunned.

Stretton were game, but Marsden had a ton of possession and a strong connection between their offloading forwards and their impressive backs.

Centre Antonio Okusitino, five-eighth Jack Hepi Simon, Timperon (two tries), Cresswell and interchange forward Frontier Wiperi were try scorers for Marsden.

PREVIEW

Ipswich SHS are riding a five-game winning streak, Marsden SHS have been the pacesetters for much of the year – something has to give in Wednesday’s marquee Langer Trophy match-up.

LANGER TROPHY, WALTERS CUP PICTURE GALLERY

This will be the last match of the regular season before all eight teams assemble on August 9 at Bishop Park (Norths) in a playoff between teams one through eight.

The eighth ranked school will be replaced at position #6 by the winner of the Gee Cup v Titans Cup match on Tuesday. See that preview here.

If all goes well for these two teams, they may be meeting again on August 23 at Langlands Park, this time for much, much bigger stakes – the Grand Final.

The two schools will clash at 5pm after Stretton State College and Marsden SHS go head-to-head in the final game of the Walters Cup home and away season.

Both games will be LIVE STREAMED on KommunityTV.

KEY MATCH UPS

WILL SEMU (MARSDEN) V LJ NONU (IPSWICH)

LJ Nonu has been impressive for Ipswich. Picture David Clark

Two of the competition’s strongest centres will be on a collision course at North Ipswich Reserve.

Queensland Schoolboys representative, and arguably one of the most improved players all season, Semu is an awfully strong and quick centre.

Not unlike Semu, Nonu has a good turn of speed and powerful leg drive.

Saxon Innes and Kylem Vunipola at Marsden SHS

Saxon Innes and Kylem Vunipola at Marsden SHS.

Innes is the speed machine who will be hard to stop if he gets in space. Watch for Coby Black to put him through a hole.

Naiyep on the other hand is also very quick, but a brutal ballrunner who will help Ipswich get onto the front foot when coming out of their half.

LEWIS SYMONDS (MARSDEN) V KANE SELF (IPSWICH)

Lewis Symonds at Marsden SHS Thursday April 27, 2023. Picture, John Gass

Broncos-signed Symonds is an interesting player, a ball-playing lock who can threaten with his own runs, or link the forwards with the backs.

He could have easily been a Queensland Schoolboys representative.

His opposite number is Newcastle-contracted Kane Self, who is a very good player also.

Self is a toiler, a workhorse whose defence and carries from in close will break down the Marsden defences.

There’s a good chance Jack Laing starts at lock, with Self an almighty bench-boost.

Ignatius Park College’s rugby league squad returns to Brisbane next week to chase a Confraternity Carnival milestone that has eluded so many schools.

The Townsville school is seeking its third successive Confraternity Shield as the Division 1 champions when the 2023 Carnival begins next Monday at St Laurence’s College’s playing fields at Runcorn.

Two schools have achieved the three-peat previously in more than four decades of Confro history: St Patrick’s College, Mackay (1988-92) and Ignatius Park College (2011-2013).

Another seven schools have attempted a third successive win without success, underlining the competitive nature of the carnival.

But Ignatius Park can draw on that 2011-2013 era when current Norths Devils coach Dave Elliott guided one of the best teams in Confro history.

The 2012 team came to Shorncliffe to defend their title with a team including Valentine Holmes, Coen Hess and player of the carnival Kieran Quabba.

Ignatius Park College will compete under new leadership this year with two-time winning coach Steven Lansley transferring to new Division 3 team Southern Cross College.

Zeb Kyle is now head coach, following his work leading Townsville Blackhawks Under 18s to the Mal Meninga Cup grand final.

Kyle said the players were excited to compete this year with their attitude and defence helping deliver strong results in other competitions leading up to the Carnival.

Kyle said about five players from last season’s champions will return this year.

“I’ve been really impressed with the attitude among the group during the season,” Kyle said.

“Our defensive efforts in our games during the (north Queensland open schools’) Aaron Payne Cup give me confidence that we’ll be a tough competitor for any teams we come up against during Confro.

“It’s been a demanding few months for a lot of the boys with little time between other competitions.

The focus this week is on recovery so the boys feel fresh for a big week of footy coming up.”

The Ignatius Park team

The Ignatius Park team have battled hard in the first three rounds of the Aaron Payne Cup with their first meeting against last year’s Confro grand finalists St Patrick’s College, Mackay.

Despite a tough loss against the Mackay team, Ignatius Park fought back in round two to force a draw against Kirwan State High School and would later claim victory in round three against Trinity Bay State High School.

Ignatius Park will have a chance at redemption against St Patrick’s College in round four which is set for July 12.

When asked what key messages he’d given the group ahead of this year’s Carnival, Kyle said he had kept it very simple.

“I just want them to really enjoy the whole week,” Kyle said.

“Obviously it’s a Carnival where winning and losing matters but it should always be a Carnival they enjoy regardless of the result.

“We want the boys to enjoy each others’ company away from the footy and make sure we’re doing things we enjoy away from footy too.

“In the end, they’re just schoolboys playing footy so it’s always got to come back to that.”

Working alongside Kyle this year is assistant coach Dylan O’Connor. Included in the coach staff is ex-student now strength and condition coach, Matthew Stark.

The boys’ selected in this year’s team will have their jumpers presented to them by their parents at a special evening on the Friday before the Carnival.

Kyle said there had been a really strong showing of support from parents and the wider Townsville community for the players.

“Although it’s my first year as head coach, it’s really impressed me how strong the community support is for the boys,” Mr Kyle said.

“You can expect that a lot of parents will be making the trip to Brisbane to support their son and their school and that’s always really important.”

Kirwan High v Mackay State High in Aaron Payne Cup

Kirwan State High School’s senior team will be playing for more than the school’s honour when they take the field in the Aaron Payne Cup on Wednesday.

KIRWAN State High School’s senior team will be playing for more than the school’s honour when they take on Mackay State High School in the Aaron Payne Cup on Wednesday.

The side will be wearing special jerseys with a splash of purple as they show their support for the school’s LGBTIQA+ community.

A big crowd is expected for the match which kicks off at 12pm on Wednesday and hooker Hoani Harris, 17, explained just why the team was carrying out the initiative.

“The reason behind wearing purple is for Wear It Purple Day,” he said.

“Wear It Purple Day is this year on August 26. But we bought the initiative forward to do it this Wednesday, due to a big home game.

“So essentially the whole school will be out watching us and we’re representing the LGBTIQA+ community within Kirwan High.

“We are honoured to wear these jerseys and also just honoured to bring a voice to those that don’t have a voice and are unable to speak out.

“We just want make them feel more comfortable in the community around us and bring energy and real support to everyone.”

Fullback Vinjenzo Winterstein, 17, the brother of former Cowboys star Antonio, added: “We have students from all around the world, different countries, different cultures. We have a diverse community, and our aim is to be inclusive.

“It means a lot to us boys to be able to wear these jerseys for Wear It Purple Day, and to also help raise awareness for our LGBTQIA+ group which is called the True Colours.

“Not only does this give them opportunity to be included, but also gives a voice to those who don’t have one.”

After a mammoth seven-week break from football, coach Nathan Norford expected his Kirwan side to be tested by a Macaky State High School outfit who pushed polished cross-town rivals St Patrick’s in their last meeting.

With rust and fitness all in play, Norford admitted Kirwan’s run to the Aaron Payne Cup finals could hit a rocky start without a top effort.

“We’ve been focusing on making sure our individuals are up to standard with our fitness and individual skills,” Norford said.

“We needed to get together as a team to finetune things because term three is a big one for any schoolboy and we want to be on top of it from the start, if we can.

“(Mackay) is obviously a stronghold of rugby league in Queensland so we need to be on top of our game to make sure we can execute, because they look like a grinding team.”

The loss of centre Riwha Walden to a shoulder injury will be mitigated by the timely return of Cowboys-contracted Jerramaine Nean, who will slot into the right centre position seamlessly.

Wear It Purple Day was first started in Australia on October 15, 2010 and was founded by Katherine Hudson and Scott Williams.

Supporters wear purple to celebrate diversity and young people from the LGBTIQA+ community.
