St Patrick’s & Mackay breaks Confraternity drought

One of the most successful schools in Confraternity Carnival history broke a 22-year drought today in a dramatic finish to the prestigious schoolboys’ carnival in Rockhampton.

St Patrick’s College, Mackay – the school of State of Origin players Daly Cherry-Evans, Wendell Sailor and Shannon Hegarty – outlasted gallant Padua College, Kedron 10-8 in a gripping Confraternity Shield final.

The decider came down to a scrambling finish as Padua College peppered the Mackay line – their last play went through nine sets of hands and included a regathered kick – but the Brisbane team was unable to haul in a 10-0 halftime deficit.

The win restored St Patrick’s College to the top of a Confraternity Carnival they once dominated. In a 16-year period from 1988, St Patrick’s won eight Shield titles including five in a row.

But they had not won since defeating St Mary’s College, Toowoomba in the 2003 decider on the Gold Coast.

This is the 45th Confraternity Carnival, drawing 56 boys’ teams and 16 girls’ teams from Catholic and Independent schools across the state.

The Carnival is run by Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Rugby League and was hosted by The Cathedral College.

This “Confro” was difficult to predict.

The Shield semi-finalists included teams from Rockhampton, Yeppoon, Mackay and Brisbane. And the mixture of young squad and schools who had come off their rugby union seasons made it guesswork.

The carnival came down to a Mackay team led by cane farmer and rookie coach Shane Mau making the most of its opportunities in wins over Confro powerhouses Ignatius Park College, Townsville, hosts The Cathedral College and the brave Padua College team.

“That was so nail-biting,” Mau said. “We were riding that finish because it was just such a close game.

“We got to the front but Padua came back. They are just a great side. They never give in and we knew we would have to work really hard to beat them.

“To be a part of this is just so special for everyone involved. Our squad is just a great group of young men.

“We’ve got some really good players in our team who are well known in schoolboy footy but we also have a full squad that just never stopped trying all week.

The win comes down to the whole squad.”

Halfback Adam McSherry, contracted to the NRL Dolphins, is one of those high-profile schoolboys who caused trouble for St Patrick’s rivals across the week.

McSherry created one of the first line breaks as St Patrick’s dominated the first half before Padua College’s reply.

Five-eighth and player-of-the-carnival Damon Humphrys, contracted to the NRL Bulldogs, sparked the Padua attack as the southerners scored twice in the second half.

Padua College had played its first rugby league game of the year in Monday’s opening pool round after claiming the Associated Independent Colleges’ First XV rugby union title. St Patrick’s had been involved in their regional rugby league competition.

Goal-kicking proved the difference with McSherry’s single conversion of St Patrick’s two tries enough to land St Patrick’s ninth Shield triumph.

The Bob Lindner Trophy, for the bottom tier of Division 1, stayed locally as Rockhampton Grammar School claimed the title on countback after a 20-all draw with Marymount College, Burleigh Waters.

The Division 2 Neil Bloxsidge Plate

The Division 2 Neil Bloxsidge Plate went to St Laurence’s College, South Brisbane 18-12 against AIC rival Villanova College, Coorparoo.

Another AIC school – St Edmund’s College, Ipswich – claimed the Division 2 Confraternity Bowl in an 18-0 victory over All Souls St Gabriel’s College, Charters Towers.

Division 3 was again hard-fought between teams from across the state. The highest-ranking Confraternity Cup went to Townsville’s Ryan Catholic College with a 16-0 win over McAuley College, Beaudesert.

The Confraternity Challenge was won by St Mary’s College, Cairns, defeating St John’s School, Roma 20-16.

The inaugural Division 4 final was fought out between Brisbane Catholic Education schools Trinity College, Beenleigh and Emmaus College, Jimboomba.

Trinity College won the Confraternity Classic 10-4, surviving a last-minute attacking raid by Emmaus College.

Marymount College Surges Into Semis

Marymount College Surges Into Open Confro Semis

One of the most open Confraternity Carnivals in memory has brought together three unbeaten semi-finalists and a Marymount College team that rode an extraordinary path into the final four of the famous schools meet in Brisbane today.

Marymount College, coached by NRL premiership winner Matt Geyer and featuring famous rugby league names, kept their cool in two dramatic finishes today at St Laurence’s playing fields at Runcorn.

Geyer went to bed last night thinking his players could be denied a shot at the historic Shield because their path to the semi-finals was so tough.

Burleigh Waters school needed to win today’s final pool match while hoping two-time defending champions Ignatius Park College lost their first “Confro” game since 2018.

It all unfolded within three tense minutes as Ignatius Park College lost to surging Emmaus College.

Rockhampton while Marymount College scored after the siren on the neighbouring field to secure a superior points differential to qualify for the quarter-finals. Until that try,

Marymount and Ignatius Park had been locked on the same points differential.

Marymount College then came from behind to defeat The Cathedral College, Rockhampton 10-6 to reach Thursday’s semi-finals along with three unbeaten teams.

Three unbeaten teams

Emmaus College, Rockhampton; St Brendan’s College, Yeppoon; and St Patrick’s College, Mackay.

The Confraternity Carnival, sponsored by CQ University and staged by Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Rugby League, brings together 52 boys’ teams and 12 girls’ teams from Catholic and Independent schools across Queensland.

The first carnival was played in 1980 with a host of Queensland’s greatest players emerging from the event.

This day is nicknamed “heartbreak Tuesday” because four draining matches in two days, including a quarter-final, can knock teams out of the Confraternity Shield race before tomorrow’s rest day.

The heartbreak came today for Ignatius Park College. The runner-up in last year’s Queensland open schools titles and the most consistent Confro team over more than a decade was a stunning casualty.

Meanwhile, Marymount College rejoiced as they reached the last four of the Confraternity Shield after storming home late in the semi-darkness at Bundaberg in 2019.

“I went to bed last night really hoping the players could make it through today because we know they’re a quality team but the path today wasn’t easy,” Geyer said.

“This is my ninth carnival and I can’t remember one that’s been so open so it’s a great opportunity for all teams in the semi-finals.

“We know we’ll have to play well on Thursday but we have a really good bunch of kids who play the game in the right spirit which is what this carnival is all about. It’s exciting to be getting ready for a semi-final.”

Some of the Marymount players’ surnames are familiar to league fans.

Centre Phillip Coates’ is the brother of Queensland winger Xavier; Oscar Laffranchi is the son of former Blues Origin forward Anthony; and powerful backrower Cooper Bai is the son of former PNG star Marcus.

But it took the speed of halfback Jimi Pedlow to claim the winning try for Marymount as a brave TCC scrambled to defend a counter-attack that broke their 6-4 at halftime.

Marymount will meet St Brendan’s College, Yeppoon in the semi-finals. The Confro heavyweight has won its four matches across the first two days and showcased its power with a 46-0 win over St Augustine’s College, Cairns in the quarter-final.

Thursday’s second semi-final brings together Emmaus College, Rockhampton and St Patrick’s College, Mackay.

Emmaus College has maintained its impressive lead-up form with an unbeaten run into the semi-finals.

Their 16-0 win over Ignatius Park College in the final pool match sounded a warning backed up by a 20-0 semi-final win over Shalom College, Bundaberg.

St Patrick’s College overcame an impressive Iona College, Lindum in their quarter-final 18-6. Last year’s runners-up made the most of their opportunities to remain unbeaten for the week.

A total of 16 teams each contest the boys’ Divisions 1 and 2 while 20 teams are playing in Division 3.

The second-tier Bob Linder Trophy will be decided between: Marist College, Ashgrove; St Peter Claver College, Riverview; Ignatius Park College; and St Mary’s College, Toowoomba.

They each won their quarter-finals this afternoon.

Ignatius Park faced one of the most stunning losses in Confro history only to hold on to defeat Division 1 debutants St Edmund’s College, Ipswich 18-16 in their Trophy quarter-final.

St Edmund’s dominated the last 10 minutes of the match in one of the most stirring performances in recent carnival history.

The quarter-finals were held across Division 2 today and 2022 champions Our Lady of the Southern Cross College, Dalby are in the running again.

They reached the semi-finals alongside Columba Catholic College, Charters Towers; St Columban’s College, Caboolture and host school St Laurence’s College, South Brisbane.

The quarter-finals for Division 3 will be contested on Thursday with finals for all Divisions on Friday.

New Girls Teams In Confo Carnival

New Teams Emerge In Confraternity Carnival Girls Draw

New Teams Emerge In Confraternity Carnival Girls’ Draw

St Patrick’s College, Mackay took a step towards a treasured Confraternity Shield for their school in an unbeaten start to the girls’ rugby league competition in Brisbane today.

St Patrick’s won their two opening matches in the third edition of the girls’ draw at the famous Confraternity Carnival.

Which is in its 43rd year of bringing together Catholic and Independent Schools from across the state.

Rockhampton schools Emmaus College and The Cathedral College were also unbeaten after two matches, leaving a final pool match tomorrow to determine the semi-finalists in the afternoon.

Twelve teams are contesting the girls’ competition to be split into tiers to compete for the top Confraternity Shield and the second-tier Confraternity Trophy.

St Patrick’s College, Mackay have one of the proudest histories in Confraternity Carnival, stretching back to the boys’ unmatched five-year Shield winning streak from 1988 with teams including future league legend Wendell Sailor.

But St Patrick’s haven’t claimed a Shield since 2003.

The girls and boys’ teams were excellent last year but lost their finals when thousands of spectators watched on in Mackay.

This girls’ team has made a positive start under new coach Imogen Healy, a town planner who is still playing top-grade league as a halfback in Mackay.

Healy has brought together a team with 11 players from last year’s campaign and some who featured in the inaugural girls’ competition in 2021 before Covid-19 forced an early end to the carnival.

“Some of these girls have been playing together since they were in Year 7 so they’ve developed good combinations on the field but they’re also friends off the field,” Healy said.

“We have spoken about what happened last year and the chance to get another opportunity this year.

They have come here to do their best and to see where that can take us.”

The Cathedral College made a statement when they inflicted the first loss in Confro girls’ history on Marymount College, Burleigh Waters.

Last year’s Shield champions fell 8-4 to The Cathedral College before rebounding with a 40-4 win over Townsville’s Southern Cross Catholic College.

Emmaus College, Rockhampton also staked a claim with wins today over St Margaret Mary’s College, Townsville and St Ursula’s College, Yeppoon.

Three new teams played their first girls’ matches today: Emmaus College, Jimboomba; Mt Maria College, Mitchelton; and Trinity College, Beenleigh. Mt Maria began its campaign with a 22-10 win over Southern Cross Catholic College.

The winners of tomorrow’s semi-finals will qualify for Thursday’s deciders. The girls’ Shield grand final will be held at 11am on Thursday, one hour after the Trophy grand final.

Everything you need to know: Queensland Schoolgirls

The 2023 Queensland School Sport 14-15 Years and 16-18 Years Girls Rugby League State Championships will be held at the Gold Coast from May 11-14.

The competition will be split between Bob Singh Oval, Miami and Cbus Super Stadium, Robina during the first three days. The final day will have matches from both age groups at each venue.

The tournament will commence with an opening ceremony at 8.15am on Thursday and wrap up with a closing ceremony after the final game, when those selected in the Queensland 17-18 years and, for the first time, 15-16 years squads will be revealed.

Queensland Representative School Sport rugby league chairman Scott Whybird said the carnival was a highlight on the school calendar.

“It brings opportunities across the state, from the Torres Strait to Coolangatta and way out west. It’s a really great time for families, for the girls and the cherry on top is to be able to make the state team and play the national championships,” Whybird said.

“The referees are a really critical component also. It’s an opportunity for them to work on their development and the other area that’s really helping us out is we’re working with the QRL with our coaches and giving them some professional learning opportunities to lift the standard of coaching.

“It’s a really integrated state championships that gives everybody an opportunity to develop and showcase their skills.”

Matches from the carnival will be available to watch live and free at Qplus.tv.

Rep jerseys up for grabs at Under 17 Girls Central Region Carnival

One of Chloe Pallisier’s rugby league goals is to play for a Queensland team.

And her eyes are firmly on the prize when it comes to this weekend’s Under 17 Girls Central Region Carnival, which will act as selection tournament for the Queensland Under 17 Girls Country team.

This side – picked in conjunction with the Northern region – will go on to play against City on Hostplus Cup grand final day.

Pallisier will pull on the jersey for the Western Clydesdales this weekend and, while she is one of the younger players in the side at age 15, she is keen to see how herself and her teammates match up against other teams from across the region.

The Cydesdales will meet Sunshine Coast, Central Queensland and Wide Bay across Friday and Saturday.

Chloe Pallisier

“I was pretty excited,” Pallisier said of making the Toowoomba team.

“I thought I wasn’t going to make it because of the high level of girls talent in Toowoomba.

“I want to see where everyone else is and how everyone else is developing, as well as Toowoomba.

“It would be a huge honour to make the Country side but I know it will be quite tough with the talent and skills that everyone else has.”

The young five-eighth started playing the game after her dad, Michael, introduced her to it when she was eight. She was also inspired by some of the women’s players at the time, including Queensland Maroons great, Steph Hancock.

She said she is forever grateful for her dad’s support, as well as that of her mum, Terri, and younger brother, Joel.

Chloe Pallisier in action

“I’m really grateful that my dad got me into it,” she said.

“I live and breathe rugby league.”

Now with the Southern Suburbs Tigers, Pallisier – who has represented the Central Crows and played schoolgirls,

Chloe loves the game of rugby league and continues to be inspired by the older generations, with Ali Brigginshaw, Tarryn Aiken, Millie Boyle and Tamika Upton among her favourite players.

“I used to live in Chinchilla so that’s two hours from Toowoomba,” Pallisier said.

“I used to play with the boys until under 12s. Then we moved into Toowoomba when I was about 13 for high school and that helped me play with the girls.

“The pathways are pretty amazing. Looking at Ali Brigginshaw and how she had to stop playing rugby league altogether, there’s so many more pathways for us girls to improve our game and show that girls can do what boys do as well.

“I just love the toughness that everyone puts into the game and the aggression.

We don’t go at half pace. We’re full out, nonstop.

“I’d like to make a Queensland side one day. Queensland Country or Schoolgirls Queensland or one day an Origin side. That would be crazy amazing.”

Confraternity Carnival semi-finalists set

Rugby league’s famous Confraternity Carnival has thrown up a mouth-watering semi-final draw featuring its most successful teams after a brilliant “heartbreak Tuesday” in Mackay.

Tuesday has been nicknamed as “heartbreak” day as teams play their fourth match in just two days.

The fatigue and the tension of carnival football have brought teams undone and buried their trophy chances ahead of tomorrow’s traditional rest day.

St Brendan’s College knew the feeling from its stumble in 2019 when the finals were last contested ahead of COVID disruptions.

In 2019, St Brendan’s College led Padua College 18-0 at halftime, but failed to advance to the last four.

That setback was in the minds of the Brendan’s faithful today as they moved to an 18-0 lead against 2018 champions St Mary’s College, Toowoomba.

But St Mary’s hit back to trail 18-10 and then had a bobbling chance to scorch downfield only for a knock-on to present an opportunity for St Brendan’s to stead for a 24-14 win.

Scott Minto’s team showed resolve across 160 combined minutes of football in the two days, qualifying for a semi-final showdown with Ignatius Park College.

“My brothers have probably been to about 20 Confros between them and they all told me that Tuesday afternoon is the toughest part of the week. You just want to get through it and get into the semis,” coach Minto said.

“It was pleasing to get that win because the boys are starting to get used to carnival football with all its bumps and bruises. We’ve been improving across the games and we’ll have a rest now and get ready for Thursday.”

St Brendan’s will need to be at the top of its game to counter a rampaging Ignatius Park College, which has rattled up an aggregate score of 152-4 in its four matches.

Today’s 30-4 quarter-final win over a brave Iona College, Lindum – playing its first league matches of the season and keeping its line intact in the second half – included the first try that Ignatius Park has conceded during the carnival.

Coach Steven Lansley has his team primed for the final four, but admitted Thursday’s match would be a big test against a St Brendan’s team that won their Aaron Payne Cup semi-final encounter last year.

“We know how good a team Brendan’s are and it’s so hard to win Confro,” Lansley said.

“They’ve done it more than any other school so that’s a big test for our players.”

Thursday’s semi-finals are guaranteed to draw a strong crowd after St Patrick’s College, Mackay advanced with a 28-0 quarter-final win over Cairns’ St Augustine’s College.

The result was impressive for the home team, striving to win its first Shield title in 19 years as it hosts the carnival for the first time since 1996.

St Patrick’s will meet The Cathedral College in the semi-final after the Rockhampton team survived the closest of the quarter-finals with a 14-10 win over a valiant Marymount College, Burleigh Waters.

The match brought together the teams coached by best mates and Melbourne Storm NRL premiership team mates Tony Martin (TCC) and Matt Geyer (Marymount).

Both men had to endure the nerves of a dramatic finish as Marymount received a penalty and mounted a desperate attacking raid after the siren, only to fall short.

After the boys’ pool matches were contested by three divisions of 16 teams, the carnival moved into six separate draws of eight teams with the Confraternity Shield the most prized of the six trophies on offer.

The second-tier Bob Linder Trophy will pit Shalom College, Bundaberg, St Peter Claver College, Riverview, Marist College, Ashgrove and Padua College, Kedron in its semi-finals.

Meanwhile, four other trophies will reach the final four on Thursday while those teams that lost quarter-finals will play off in separate matches with all teams playing six matches over the four days of competition.

The girls’ competition continued to impress today with Marymount remaining unbeaten while St Patrick’s College, Mackay, Emmaus College, Rockhampton and The Cathedral College all won three matches.

Marymount is 7-0 in Confraternity Carnival play after winning all three of its pool matches last year before a snap COVID lockdown prevented finals.

Future NRL stars take to the field at 42nd Confraternity Carnival in Mackay

The Confraternity Carnival schoolboy carnival has featured some of the game’s greats in the past so we have revealed some of the top talents to watch at this year’s event in Mackay. SEE WHO MADE IT

Rugby League: The New South Wales’ under-19s outfit were far too good for the Maroons, putting together a first half blitz to kill off Queensland.

Some future NRL and State of Origin stars will be on show at the 42nd Confraternity Carnival schoolboy rugby league competition in Mackay next week so we have revealed the top talents to watch.

A total of 48 boys teams and nine girls teams from Catholic and independent schools around Queensland will be hosted by St Patrick’s College, Mackay and Mercy College from June 27 to July 1.

Eight Confraternity Carnival graduates are in the Queensland Maroons squad for game two of Origin, including Cameron Munster, Valentine Homes, Ben Hunt, Harry Grant, Corey Oats, Felise Kaufusi, Lindsay Collins and the injured Xavier Coats.

Confraternity Carnival graduate and Queensland captain Daly Cherry-Evans came from the host school of St Patrick’s College, Mackay.

So who are some of the young guns taking part in this year’s boys carnival?

We will also have some top talents to watch from the girls competition next week.

TOP 15 PLAYERS TO WATCH

Henry Teutau (Ignatius Park College)

Ignatius Park’s Henry Teutau. Picture: Evan Morgan

Weighing in at about 115kg, Teutau is a prop with the speed of an outside back. The New Zealand product, who is contracted to the Cowboys, showed his skill when he steamrolled through Kirwan in the final minutes for a try that drew an Aaron Payne Cup match this month.

Lachlan Coburn (St Peter Claver College)

Lachlan Coburn is the youngest son of Danny Coburn – the most capped Ipswich Jet. His older brother, Tyler Coburn, is also a Claver Old Boy who has been playing really well for the Jets in cup the last few years.

Lachlan played Cyril Connel for the Jets this year at lock and hooker and was great in that competition.

Lachlan Stuart (St Peter Claver College)

Lachlan Stuart is a young halfback who is a a cracking rugby league player.

Stuart is competitive and cheeky with a great show and go and short kicking game.

The Mal Meninga preseason has helped him mature and has another year of Mal to come.

He is definitely one to watch at this year’s Carnival.

Lachlan Stuart St Peter Claver College

Nacollie Papua ( St Peter Claver College)

Nacollie Papua is a big, mobile middle or edge back rower.

He plays union for his club footy but is a powerful force in league as well.

He is one of Claver’s captains and will lead by example with his uncompromising defence and dynamic ball running.

One of the Players to Watch at the Carnival from St Peter Claver College: Nacollie Papua.

Matt Hill (St Brendan’s College, Yeppoon)

Matt Hill of St Brendan’s College with the ball.

An electric fullback who scored one of the best tries of Confro last year.

Hill is contracted to the Melbourne Storm and already features in the Capras’ impressive Under 21s team in the statewide competition, playing well against players several years older.

Henry Thorpe (St Patrick’s College, Mackay)

Henry Thorpe. Picture: Matthew Forrest

A utility player who has already linked with the Canberra Raiders for next year.

The versatile Thorpe can play hooker or other positions that makes him vital for St Pat’s on-field chemistry. His brother Harry, a half, will also link with the Raiders next year.

Mitch Rogers (Padua College, Kedron)

An outstanding prospect who showed his skill on the rugby union field with perhaps the best individual try of the AIC season, producing two chip-and-chases in the one movement. A dangerous No. 9 who follows on the best traditions of Padua’s proud league history.

Tana Martin (The Cathedral College, Rockhampton)

Tana Martin with the ball The Cathedral College

The son of former Melbourne Storm premiership player Tony, Tana is a highly promising halfback who will be key to TCC’s hopes to going one better than their 2019 grand final loss. Martin is fast and a smart thinker on the field. His father is coaching TCC at Confro.

Jamal Shibasaki (Ignatius Park College)

Ignatius Park College (Iggy Park) rugby league forwards Jamaine Stanley, Jamal Shibasaki and Henry Teutau. Picture: Nic Darveniza

A damaging backrower whose brother Gehamat played NRL for the Broncos and Knights.

Shibasaki is also on a Broncos contract, showing his form for the Townsville Blackhawks Under 18 team. Shibasaki has speed and size.

Will Shears (St Patrick’s College, Mackay)

Will Shears. Picture: Matthew Forrest

A quality fullback who has caught the eye in his various forms of junior representative football.

Shears captained the Mackay Cutters’ Under 18 team this year. He can play centres and has even spent time at lock. Already contracted to North Queensland Cowboys.

Callan Campbell (St Brendan’s College, Yeppoon)

Callan Campbell CQ Capras’ under-18 player

Regarded as one of the most underrated players in the Mal Meninga Cup competition in the halves for the Capras.

Campbell will captain the St Brendan’s team in Confro and he will bring excellent knowledge of some rival players from his Meninga performances.

Bailey Nash (St Mary’s College, Toowoomba)

.
The strong-running centre will captain St Mary’s when he returns for his second Confraternity Carnival.

Nash was impressive on the left side for the Western Clydesdales in the Mal Meninga Cup, showing skill in attack and defence.

Jet Daly (St Patrick’s College, Shorncliffe)

The Shorncliffe skipper is back for his second Confraternity Carnival after showing his promise last season.

A tireless backrower with some of the quickest feet among all forwards in the competition.

He will be central to St Pat’s hopes of another big tournament.

Regan Payne (St Edmund’s College, Ipswich)

One of the finds of the recent Mal Meninga Cup for Ipswich Jets. A strong-running utility with a real appetite for defence.

Payne is returning for his second Confraternity Carnival after excelling this season in St Edmund’s outstanding AIC rugby union season.

Ayden Hoad (Iona College, Lindum)

Another player who caught the eye in the Mal Meninga Cup Under 18 season. Playing for Wynnum Manly, Hoad did the job at hooker, lock, wing and centre such is his versatility. Growing in confidence and handed the co-captaincy for Iona in his second Confro appearance.

Darcy Carswell (St Mary’s College, Toowoomba)

Darcy Carswell Meninga Cup between Ipswich Jets and Clydesdales. Clydesdales, Picture: Patrick Woods.

Carswell was named in The Courier-Mail’s Mal Meninga Cup team of the season for his efforts for the Western Clydesdales.

A prop with a serious work ethic, Carswell returns for his second Confro with the excellent preparation of a tough Meninga Cup campaign.

Xavier Kerrisk (St Patrick’s College, Mackay)

Xavier Kerrisk. Picture: Matthew Forrest

Named on the bench in The Courier-Mail’s Mal Meninga Cup team of the season, Kerrisk also featured in the Queensland Under 18 emerging Origin squad. Signed to the North Queensland Cowboys on a development contract, Kerrisk is another asset for a strong St Pat’s team.

Lachlan Magill (St Augustine’s College, Cairns)

The player-of-the-match as St Augustine’s took out last year’s NRL Schoolboy Trophy decider to give the Cairns school its first state league title in almost 30 years.

Magill is a backrower with speed, size and good ball-handling skills.

Confraternity Carnival heavyweights flex muscle

Rugby league’s most famous schoolboy nursery burst back into life today with three of its best-performed teams making bold starts in their bid for the Confraternity Shield in Mackay.

Defending champions Ignatius Park College, Townsville and the tournament’s most successful school St Brendan’s College, Yeppoon, won both their boys’ matches on the opening day of the Confraternity Carnival, which has drawn teams from more than 50 schools across Queensland.

Host school St Patrick’s College, Mackay also began with a dominant boys’ win in front of a large home crowd watching the carnival in their city for the first time since 1996.

Meanwhile, last year’s hosts Iona College, Lindum, The Cathedral College, Rockhampton and St Augustine’s College, Cairns surged through the first day unbeaten.

In the girls’ competition, St Patrick’s College, Mackay, Shalom College, Bundaberg and Marymount College, Burleigh Waters won two matches today in the quest for the inaugural CQ University Shield girls’ title.

Confraternity Carnival, sponsored by CQ University and staged by Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Rugby League, brings together 48 boys’ teams and nine girls’ teams from Catholic and Independent schools across Queensland.

The first carnival was played in 1980 with a host of Queensland’s greatest players emerging from the event.

There was much uncertainty heading into this 42nd Confraternity Carnival after the havoc wrought by COVID cancellations in previous years.

There was no carnival in 2020 and last year’s tournament at Iona College ended with a snap COVID lockdown after the pool rounds.

That leaves Ignatius Park College as the defending champions for a Division 1 title won in Bundaberg three years ago.

But there are similarities for the men in blue and white, who won their two matches today by a combined aggregate of 80-0.

Coach Steve Lansley’s team only gave up two tries across the week in their Shield win in Bundaberg and kept their line intact today against Aquinas College, Ashmore (44-0) and Marist College, Ashgrove (36-0).

But Lansley said his players could not be satisfied with today’s performance ahead of tomorrow morning’s final pool match against St Augustine’s College, Cairns before the quarter-finalists are decided.

“We defended our line well, but we were too often defending because of our mistakes,” Lansley said.

“We will have to get much better if we want to go deep into this carnival.

It’s a high-quality carnival and I could see today how well some of the other teams have played in their games.

It’s going to be a tough week.” St Patrick’s College, Mackay attracted a large crowd watching a comfortable 34-10 win over St Peter Claver College, Riverview.

Hundreds of people, some in work clothes heading away from the office to see family and friends play, saw a strong start to St Patrick’s quest to win its first Shield title since 2003.

The home team were playing a late game tonight under the lights at BB Print Stadium. St Brendan’s College – the most successful Confro school with 13 Shield wins – moved past Padua College, Kedron (22-0) and Shalom College, Bundaberg (20-6) as it chases its first title since 2015.

Padua showed its fight in the second match of the afternoon when it clawed back to draw 16-all with Marymount College, Burleigh Waters. Padua were among the teams from greater Brisbane’s Associated Independent Colleges competition launching into their league seasons after their rugby union competition.

Iona College was among them, impressing with wins over Rockhampton Grammar School (24-6) and St Peter Claver College, Riverview (20-8).

The boys’ competition is played in three divisions of 16 teams.

After tomorrow’s pool matches, the teams will be divided into six groups of eight to play for trophies.

The quarter-finals in each competition begin tomorrow with semi-finals on Thursday after Wednesday’s rest day.

The finals will be contested on Friday.

A host of teams remain unbeaten after the first day of the Division 2 competition including St Laurence’s College, South Brisbane, Marist College, Emerald and Charters Towers’ Columba Catholic College. In Division 3, Good Shepherd College, Mount Isa, St Mary’s College, Woree and Unity College, Caloundra West were among the unbeaten group.

The girls’ competition is headed for its first final with Marymount College adding to its unbeaten Confro record today. The Gold Coast team won all three pool matches in last year’s tournament and added two wins today.

Shalom College, Bundaberg, won both its matches to show that it could figure in Thursday’s finals. St Patrick’s College, Mackay, were impressive after shaking off an encouraging start from Confro debutants St Margaret Mary’s College, Townsville.

The standard of the girls’ competition has been praised as representatives from the Queensland Under 19 representative program featured alongside promising new league talent. Confraternity Carnival ready for full return RELATED

News Corp expands live stream coverage of the Titans Shield schoolboys league season

Marymount College might start favourites, but there is a pack of hungry schools ready to prove them wrong.

Find out how you can WATCH TITANS SHIELD LIVE from Wednesday.

Don’t miss out on the headlines from Rugby League Live Stream. Followed categories will be added to My News.

The Titans Surfside Buslines Schools League has returned for another season, as a new crop of exciting young talents vie for a slice of the NRL spotlight.

News Corp will be along for the ride, expanding our live coverage of the southeast Queensland schoolboys league competition to include four games each round.

As part of the expansion, the Gold Coast Bulletin and Courier Mail will shine a light on the best emerging female footballers – a crucial part of the future success of NRLW expansion club Gold Coast Titans.

The exclusive live streams will include a girls and a boys double header each week, kicking off with Wednesday’s clashes between Keebra Park and Ipswich (girls) and Southport against Beaudesert (boys).

Watch this afternoon’s action in the player above and find a full schedule below

In total, 63 boys sides will clash across two divisions in Years 7/8, 9/10 and 11/12 school grade groups. On the girls’ side of the draw, a record 43 teams have been registered to take part this season.

There will be hordes of hungry students ready to stake their claim as the best school in the southeast. But one will prove hard to beat in the Year 11/12 boys division one: Last year’s competition frontrunners Marymount College.

When asked how he would distinguish Marymount forwards Sam McAllister and Tallas Abell from each other, coach Matt Geyer struggles to separate them.

“It’s hard to speak about one without speaking of the other,” Geyer said.

McAllister’s form over the past 12 months proved enough to force his way into the Burleigh Bears Mal Meninga Cup side, joined by his teammate and hooker Taj Harris.

But it is not the individual skillset of McAllister that Geyer would be relying on. Instead, it would be the way in which he and Abell brought out the best in each other.

“Both have really good skill level and work together well,”

“Both have really good skill level and work together well,” Geyer said.

“They move the ball well and they don’t mind getting in and doing the hard stuff either.

“One will follow the other (and) they work as a pair quite well, moving the ball between each other.

“I’m not a big fan of the one out hit ups, I like to see interchange of passing and change of direction and they’re great advocates for that. We’ll lean on them a lot.

“They have the seniority, so we’ll be calling on them to lead the way.

“With having quite potentially a young group we’ll need those older fellas to stand up.”

Geyer is set to field a relatively inexperienced side for the 2022 competition, with some Year 10 students expected to be called upon throughout the campaign in preparation for the Confraternity Shield later in the year.

Marymount has blossomed into a competitive force at the annual Queensland schoolboys tournament, having topped its division one pool last year only for a Covid-19 concern to halt proceedings.

This Wednesday saw the crème of the Keebra Park SHS sporting Acadamies converged on the STARS function room at the Southport RSL for the Keebra Park SHS Annual Sports Awards.

Students across all age groups including our GSA (Girls Sports Academy), Rugby League Academy, Basketball Academy and our InterSchool sports program eagerly waited the announcement of our top award, the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the year and this year we were thrilled that we had so many students vying for these coveted titles.

So many in fact hat while Blake Mozer took out the Men’s award with representation at the Australian Schoolboy Rugby League level, there were three of our Girls Academy tied for the honour.
