Author : Michael Crutcher QRL contributor

St Patrick’s & Mackay breaks Confraternity drought

One of the most successful schools in Confraternity Carnival history broke a 22-year drought today in a dramatic finish to the prestigious schoolboys’ carnival in Rockhampton.

St Patrick’s College, Mackay – the school of State of Origin players Daly Cherry-Evans, Wendell Sailor and Shannon Hegarty – outlasted gallant Padua College, Kedron 10-8 in a gripping Confraternity Shield final.

The decider came down to a scrambling finish as Padua College peppered the Mackay line – their last play went through nine sets of hands and included a regathered kick – but the Brisbane team was unable to haul in a 10-0 halftime deficit.

The win restored St Patrick’s College to the top of a Confraternity Carnival they once dominated. In a 16-year period from 1988, St Patrick’s won eight Shield titles including five in a row.

But they had not won since defeating St Mary’s College, Toowoomba in the 2003 decider on the Gold Coast.

This is the 45th Confraternity Carnival, drawing 56 boys’ teams and 16 girls’ teams from Catholic and Independent schools across the state.

The Carnival is run by Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Rugby League and was hosted by The Cathedral College.

This “Confro” was difficult to predict.

The Shield semi-finalists included teams from Rockhampton, Yeppoon, Mackay and Brisbane. And the mixture of young squad and schools who had come off their rugby union seasons made it guesswork.

The carnival came down to a Mackay team led by cane farmer and rookie coach Shane Mau making the most of its opportunities in wins over Confro powerhouses Ignatius Park College, Townsville, hosts The Cathedral College and the brave Padua College team.

“That was so nail-biting,” Mau said. “We were riding that finish because it was just such a close game.

“We got to the front but Padua came back. They are just a great side. They never give in and we knew we would have to work really hard to beat them.

“To be a part of this is just so special for everyone involved. Our squad is just a great group of young men.

“We’ve got some really good players in our team who are well known in schoolboy footy but we also have a full squad that just never stopped trying all week.

The win comes down to the whole squad.”

Halfback Adam McSherry, contracted to the NRL Dolphins, is one of those high-profile schoolboys who caused trouble for St Patrick’s rivals across the week.

McSherry created one of the first line breaks as St Patrick’s dominated the first half before Padua College’s reply.

Five-eighth and player-of-the-carnival Damon Humphrys, contracted to the NRL Bulldogs, sparked the Padua attack as the southerners scored twice in the second half.

Padua College had played its first rugby league game of the year in Monday’s opening pool round after claiming the Associated Independent Colleges’ First XV rugby union title. St Patrick’s had been involved in their regional rugby league competition.

Goal-kicking proved the difference with McSherry’s single conversion of St Patrick’s two tries enough to land St Patrick’s ninth Shield triumph.

The Bob Lindner Trophy, for the bottom tier of Division 1, stayed locally as Rockhampton Grammar School claimed the title on countback after a 20-all draw with Marymount College, Burleigh Waters.

The Division 2 Neil Bloxsidge Plate

The Division 2 Neil Bloxsidge Plate went to St Laurence’s College, South Brisbane 18-12 against AIC rival Villanova College, Coorparoo.

Another AIC school – St Edmund’s College, Ipswich – claimed the Division 2 Confraternity Bowl in an 18-0 victory over All Souls St Gabriel’s College, Charters Towers.

Division 3 was again hard-fought between teams from across the state. The highest-ranking Confraternity Cup went to Townsville’s Ryan Catholic College with a 16-0 win over McAuley College, Beaudesert.

The Confraternity Challenge was won by St Mary’s College, Cairns, defeating St John’s School, Roma 20-16.

The inaugural Division 4 final was fought out between Brisbane Catholic Education schools Trinity College, Beenleigh and Emmaus College, Jimboomba.

Trinity College won the Confraternity Classic 10-4, surviving a last-minute attacking raid by Emmaus College.

Cutters win inaugural Women’s U 19 grand final

Resilient Cutters take out inaugural Harvey Norman Under 19 grand final

A gutsy, brave Mackay Cutters side have taken out the inaugural Harvey Norman Under 19 grand final 18-16 over Brisbane Tigers.

The game at Totally Workwear Stadium was entertaining, tough and a true arm wrestle; down two players through injury for the final 17 minutes of the game, the Cutters held on to their lead despite the best efforts from the Tigers.

There was a lengthy delay in play – more than 45 minutes – after Cutters No.13 Leila Murphy injured her ankle around the 42-minute mark; once the ambulance took her away – to an applauding crowd – it was game on between the two sides.

The crowd was going wild as they battled for the win.

Cutters assistant coach Jamaiah Hutchison said he was simply pumped following the epic clash and was so proud of the resilience and effort put in.

“It was a bit nerve-wracking towards the end but very exciting for the girls,” Hutchison said.
Match: Tigers v Cutters

Grand Final – Saturday 13th April

Tigers 16 – 18 Cutters

Venue: Totally Workwear Stadium, Brisbane

“With a really big stoppage it’s kind of hard to keep everyone on track for how long the girls were out for.

We just took a step back and tried to realise what we had to do as our job, get back into our warm-up and try and execute what we’ve been doing really well for that whole game.

“The Tigers started strong… they’ve got a big pack and we thought they were going to really use it quite well so we made a couple of changes to try and suit the physicality.

They obviously had the home crowd advantage… we could barely hear ourselves talk over the crowd so we expected they were going to come out guns blazing.

“We had a few tries saved on the line. The girls put themselves in a position for match-winning moments in the game, so they did that really well and showed a lot of resilience.”

Cutters halfback and captain Mersades Lawson and centre Jennifer Kimber both scored doubles in the game as they kept the edge over the Tigers to claim the 18-16 win.

And it was hooker Paityne Johns who claimed player of the match honours.

Hutchison said Cutters head coach Matt Sanders, absent for personal reasons, would be so proud of his side.

“Matt will be over the moon… he called me about 30 times through the game, as he should, but he’ll be over the moon,” Hutchison said.

“I already know exactly how he would’ve reacted too… he would’ve jumped up from his chair and started cheering and I’m sure there would’ve been someone telling him to calm down.

“Very happy for Matt.

He deserves this more than anyone, in his role for the last three of four years, and he has earned it.”

Hutchison said winning this first Harvey Norman Under 19 grand final – making history – was “massive for the club”.

“It shows just how good our football is up north,” Hutchison said.

“The girls worked so hard for it… they put the work and effort in there and got the result.”

Everything you need to know: Queensland Schoolgirls

The 2023 Queensland School Sport 14-15 Years and 16-18 Years Girls Rugby League State Championships will be held at the Gold Coast from May 11-14.

The competition will be split between Bob Singh Oval, Miami and Cbus Super Stadium, Robina during the first three days. The final day will have matches from both age groups at each venue.

The tournament will commence with an opening ceremony at 8.15am on Thursday and wrap up with a closing ceremony after the final game, when those selected in the Queensland 17-18 years and, for the first time, 15-16 years squads will be revealed.

Queensland Representative School Sport rugby league chairman Scott Whybird said the carnival was a highlight on the school calendar.

“It brings opportunities across the state, from the Torres Strait to Coolangatta and way out west. It’s a really great time for families, for the girls and the cherry on top is to be able to make the state team and play the national championships,” Whybird said.

“The referees are a really critical component also. It’s an opportunity for them to work on their development and the other area that’s really helping us out is we’re working with the QRL with our coaches and giving them some professional learning opportunities to lift the standard of coaching.

“It’s a really integrated state championships that gives everybody an opportunity to develop and showcase their skills.”

Matches from the carnival will be available to watch live and free at Qplus.tv.

Surge in QRL community participation as rugby league captivates Queensland

Footy fever is gripping Queensland as more and more junior and senior players sign on to play community rugby league across the state.

At the start of this month, Queensland Rugby League player registrations were up 14 per cent, equating to about 8000 more registered participants compared to the corresponding period in 2022.

Representatives from the QRL and National Rugby League were in Redcliffe today to celebrate the strong start to the club rugby league season.

While QRL general manager of community and competitions Glenn Ottaway and NRL executive general manager of elite football Graham Annesley provided a participation update to the media.

More than 50 excited junior players took part in a skills session on the Kayo Stadium field.

NRL executive general manager of elite football Graham Annesley – Photo: Jacob Grams/QRL

They were joined by Harvey Norman Queensland Maroons head coach Tahnee Norris and squad members Evania Pelite and Shannon Mato, as well as Dolphins NRL star Sean O’Sullivan.

Norris, Pelite and Mato spoke passionately about the growth of the female game and connection between community rugby league and the elite level.

The surge in Queensland registration numbers coincides with a strong start to QRL statewide competitions

The excitement generated by the emergence of The Dolphins in the NRL; and the blistering early form of the Brisbane Broncos.

Add in many other eye-catching performances from Queensland-eligible players,

There’s ample reasons to be optimistic about the imminent challenge awaiting Billy Slater’s Queensland Maroons team.

Future Maroons are currently enjoying their footy on rugby league fields all around the state, with 60,000 club participants having already signed on to play Queensland’s favourite sport.

Ottaway praised the efforts of staff and volunteers.

“The surge in early participation numbers is a reflection on the way the game is structured and delivered across Queensland,” Ottaway said.

QRL general manager of community and competitions Glenn Ottaway – Photo: Jacob Grans/QRL

“There is also greater confidence in the registration platform in that we have opened registrations on December 1 for the past three years.

There has been a consistent and aligned marketing approach between the QRL and NRL.

“What we have seen is a much higher peak in registrations through January than we’ve experienced before.

“Club volunteers need to be praised for having their products set up in the national database to coincide with the national opening of registrations.

Rugby league is also one of the more affordable community sports.”

Given the promising early data approaching Easter, Ottaway expects this year’s final numbers to eclipse the 2022 figure of 64,566.

“Every age demographic is above where it was at the same time last year, including seniors (19 years and above),” Ottaway said.

Male participation (year to date) is up 13 per cent up, while female registrations continue to grow.

O’Sullivan said the opportunity to play junior rugby league helped shape him into the person he is today.

“I often think back to how much fun I had playing junior rugby league”.

“Even more importantly, it teaches kids real life skills that go way beyond the field to help them thrive in life,” O’Sullivan said.

QRL Junior statewide competitions Round 1 preview

Round 1 kicks off tomorrow for junior statewide competitions, with southeast clubs in action for the Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup, Harvey Norman Under 19s and Cyril Connell Challenge.

Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup

Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup kicks off this week and where else would you start but with the premiers, Souths Logan Magpies, coming up against the Redcliffe Dolphins at Kayo Stadium.

It will be a hot Saturday on and off the field as Souths begin the trek back to the top of the mountain but this time with a new line up and new coach.

It’s been 293 days since Jye Gray and Blake Mozer manufactured a win over the Townsville Blackhawks on the Sunshine Coast to clinch the premiership for the Magpies.

New Souths Logan coach Ben Trim is ready for the challenge of a new season.

“Mal Meninga throws up lots of challengers, it’s a short competition so you have to be ready Round 1,” Trim said.

“We may have won the competition last season but we are a new team and new players and new coach too.”

When Souths Logan are looking to score tries or bring the ball back with venom it will be Israel Leota they look to.

Match: Dolphins v Magpies
ROUND 1 – SATURDAY 18TH FEBRUARY

1:50pm
Dolphins v Magpies
Venue:Kayo Stadium, Redcliffe

Team Lists

“I am really looking forward to seeing Israel Leota… it’s his second year of Meninga and he is looking like he is ready for a big year on the back of that trial game for the Broncos,” Trim said.

“You need a smart hooker and we have one in Jacob Tinsley, so he will play a big role for us this season too.”

Leota: ‘It would mean to world to me and my family to play for Queensland’

But even with the talent he has in his side, Trim knows what’s waiting for him at Kayo Stadium this Saturday.

“The Redcliffe middles are terrific – that is their strength and I think they have the best middle third,” Trim said.

“Michael Waqa is sensational.

“It’s going to be hot and with the two extra interchanges I think that might help the bigger teams.”

Get into this gear – maroonsshop.com

Meanwhile Dolphins coach Scott Tronc knows he’s got a job on his hands in 2023.

“Mal Meninga Cup is a 50-metre sprint. You don’t have time to start slowly or come home late,” Tronc said.

“For a lot of guys this is their first introduction to senior football… getting their preparation right, their hydration and diet.

“I want to see our players stick to a plan… know the plan and stick to it. Show they can follow the map.”

Tronc is excited about two Dolphins that might be jumping waves by the end of the Mal Meninga season.

“We have two players in Michael Waqa and John Paul Donevski who have done the pre-season with the NRL squad so they can see the top of the mountain … it’s still the same hard climb but they can see it,” Tronc said.

“They are both going to be good for us this year, as a middle forward and a fullback.”

In other games this round, Wynnum Manly will play host to Burleigh at 3.15pm at John Frederick Park, Capalaba, while Norths Devils will take on Brisbane Tigers from 2.10pm at Bishop Park.

Harvey Norman Under 19s

Round 1 of the Harvey Norman Under 19s competition will see three games be played on Saturday, finishing with a clash between the Burleigh Bears and Wynnum Manly Seagulls.

When the Bears and Seagulls met last season, it was the Bears who walked away victorious, 24-18.

A big part of that was hooker Lily-Rose Kolc, who will be back again for the Bears.

Bella Thompson, the Bears fullback, will be the vocal point of everything Burleigh do on Saturday and they will be looking for her to break open the Seagulls’ defence.

“Bella is a real player, she’s going to turn some heads this season,” Taplin said.

“I think off the bench Nadia Windleborn will have an impact and of course Lily-Rose Kolc.”

It’s been a disrupted start to the season for the Bears with new coach Spencer Taplin barely having time to check his pigeon hole.

“You’re right it’s been disrupted… I have only been involved two weeks but we are ready to go,” Taplin said.

“They’re such a great group, so coachable and willing to learn.

“They take notes when I talk and retain everything and want to get better. There’s not much more a coach can ask.

“I want to see connection… connect as a team and as a unit.”

On the opposite side of the match-up, if you said Wynnum Manly coach Steve Casey was excited for the start of the season it would be a massive understatement. In 2023, Wynnum Manly are ready.

“We are preparing to play the best team in the competition. The Bears are the benchmark,” Casey said.

“I am so excited about the season and what our forwards and outside backs can do. The players in this age group are just amazing. They’re genuine rugby league stars and they will play NRLW.

“It’s so exciting what is happening.

“Defence is our focus, that’s what I want to see. If you don’t do that well you will always struggle.”

Cyril Connell Challenge

Round 1 of the Cyril Connell Challenge will see Bishop Park play host to two Brisbane clubs that ooze tradition.

Norths Devils and Brisbane Tigers have been rocking each other’s worlds for 90 years and on Saturday the youngest Devils and Tigers get to have their turn.

Cyril Connell played 21 games for Queensland and two games for Australia, but it was off the field that the former maths teacher at Brisbane State High and director of secondary education for Queensland excelled.

Connell was able to turn to his network of contacts, his driving skills and fondness for pie eating to successfully scan Queensland in search of talent.

Finding rising stars for the Brisbane Broncos for 19 years. There wasn’t a boy in rugby league across the state that didn’t know his name.

The Tigers have several players that Connell would have been keeping a close eye on – Max Blanch is the Tigers captain and played one game last season.

He will be at lock.

Meanwhile Frank Howarth will be in the second row for the Tigers and will provide mobile physicality with front rower Kobi Floro set to be a 100kg wrecking ball.

CYRIL CONNELL CHALLENGE

Round 1 Cyril Connell Challenge team lists

Coach Lote Tuqiri is in his second year of coaching the Tigers and excited for what the season could bring.

“I think I have improved a lot around communication and my message to the players, making it very clear and concise,” Tuqiri said.

“Saturday will be about a few things, I think we are fit so the heat won’t be a problem but I just want us to compete in a smart way.

“I want to see Raymond Nagas in the clear. He has flown under the radar but I think he could score some tries for us but we need to give him the room to do that too.”

Devils coach Shannon Tupara is a realist and ready for what lies ahead this season.

“It’s such a quick competition that we will be looking to start sharp.

Trials don’t mean too much but our message has been improvement every week,” Tupara said.

“I think we can gel quickly and be a cohesive group. You can’t afford to ease into the season when it’s only six weeks.

“We will be about being a team that competes and plays a fast style of football.”

Elsewhere, Redcliffe and Souths Logan will kick off the Round 1 action at 10am when they clash at Kayo Stadium.

Wynnum Manly and Burleigh will meet at 2pm at John Frederick Park, Capalaba.

Rep jerseys up for grabs at Under 17 Girls Central Region Carnival

One of Chloe Pallisier’s rugby league goals is to play for a Queensland team.

And her eyes are firmly on the prize when it comes to this weekend’s Under 17 Girls Central Region Carnival, which will act as selection tournament for the Queensland Under 17 Girls Country team.

This side – picked in conjunction with the Northern region – will go on to play against City on Hostplus Cup grand final day.

Pallisier will pull on the jersey for the Western Clydesdales this weekend and, while she is one of the younger players in the side at age 15, she is keen to see how herself and her teammates match up against other teams from across the region.

The Cydesdales will meet Sunshine Coast, Central Queensland and Wide Bay across Friday and Saturday.

Chloe Pallisier

“I was pretty excited,” Pallisier said of making the Toowoomba team.

“I thought I wasn’t going to make it because of the high level of girls talent in Toowoomba.

“I want to see where everyone else is and how everyone else is developing, as well as Toowoomba.

“It would be a huge honour to make the Country side but I know it will be quite tough with the talent and skills that everyone else has.”

The young five-eighth started playing the game after her dad, Michael, introduced her to it when she was eight. She was also inspired by some of the women’s players at the time, including Queensland Maroons great, Steph Hancock.

She said she is forever grateful for her dad’s support, as well as that of her mum, Terri, and younger brother, Joel.

Chloe Pallisier in action

“I’m really grateful that my dad got me into it,” she said.

“I live and breathe rugby league.”

Now with the Southern Suburbs Tigers, Pallisier – who has represented the Central Crows and played schoolgirls,

Chloe loves the game of rugby league and continues to be inspired by the older generations, with Ali Brigginshaw, Tarryn Aiken, Millie Boyle and Tamika Upton among her favourite players.

“I used to live in Chinchilla so that’s two hours from Toowoomba,” Pallisier said.

“I used to play with the boys until under 12s. Then we moved into Toowoomba when I was about 13 for high school and that helped me play with the girls.

“The pathways are pretty amazing. Looking at Ali Brigginshaw and how she had to stop playing rugby league altogether, there’s so many more pathways for us girls to improve our game and show that girls can do what boys do as well.

“I just love the toughness that everyone puts into the game and the aggression.

We don’t go at half pace. We’re full out, nonstop.

“I’d like to make a Queensland side one day. Queensland Country or Schoolgirls Queensland or one day an Origin side. That would be crazy amazing.”

Mini Maroons is the weekly round-up of the amazing things kids are doing in community rugby league.

This week we are celebrating a Longreach junior preparing to graduate to the next level, a Capalaba trio learning all they can about the game, and a Mackay young gun enjoying a personal win.

QRL Central

In the space of one afternoon, Olivia Palmer went from not knowing what a kicking tee was to wanting to play rugby league week in, week out.

Now five years later, the talented 17-year-old is ready to move into the next stage of her football career, after she notched up her last appearance as a player at the Rees Orman City Country Cultural Exchange in Coolum over the weekend.

Olivia Palmer winning the 2022 Female Spirit of the Outback Award (Photo : QRL)

Olivia will graduate to senior grades next year but has thrived at the Cultural Exchange for the past five years and just took out the 2022 Female Spirit of the Outback award for her dedication and attitude.

Her father, Ben Palmer, said the reality hit for Olivia over the weekend that it was her last Cultural Exchange as a player, but he knew his daughter had many more exciting things to come beyond this season.

“With the award, I know on the girls’ side it goes to somebody that has a positive attitude, is helping out around the field, helping with other players,” Palmer said.

“She is one of the older ones now and I know she braided every single girl’s hair before their games. She was the mother hen around the group as well as trying her hardest on the field.

“She’s been there from the start. She will miss her junior years. She got upset at the end and said she would miss it.

But I told her she can always come back as a coach or assistant coach … you can still be involved in the group and when I said that, she saw another side of football.

“She was pretty keen after that. I am pretty confident she’ll be back. She still wants to be involved in it.”

Palmer was the one who introduced his daughter to the game while coaching the juniors in their hometown of Longreach.

She came down to assist one day and he asked her to run the kicking tee. She didn’t know what it was but by the end of the game was begging her parents to play.

Over the weekend at the Cultural Exchange, the whole family was involved.

Palmer coached the under 14 girls, Olivia played for the under 17 girls while her mother Jacey was the first aid officer, and her 12-year-old brother Macen played for the under 14 boys.

With limited playing options in Longreach, especially for females, the annual Cultural Exchange holds a special place for the Palmer family.

Olivia at the Cultural Exchange in one of her earlier years (Photo : QRL)

.
“She loves the chance to actually play football,” Palmer said.

“There’s not a lot of opportunities for her where we live so to actually have the chance to train and play, it’s a big thing. A lot of girls are the same way.

“They get to go away and have a bit of training, meet new girls, get kits like the boys, and they feel part of it and play the game. There’s a couple of different reasons why it’s important to her.

“When I see what Livvy is doing, it’s important to me not just because it’s rugby league – I am very passionate about rugby league in the bush with country kids – but I’m more so pleased she continues to want to do it.

“At that age you see a lot of kids lose interest and drop out … for her to want to keep on playing football means she has drive and direction. As long as she enjoys doing it, I’m happy for her.

“It’s something we have in common. We talk about different players, watch the football together … it’s something that connects us altogether.”

QRL South East

The Rees Orman City Country Cultural Exchange is all about giving young kids a chance to sample what it means to be a representative player.

While the Country teams are selected from the Outback Junior Muster, the City teams are chosen through nominations across Brisbane, rewarding players for various reasons.

For Zakeiya ‘Zee’ Kopa-Sullivan, Tasha Milton and Kaydence Marino-King, it’s not just their on-field performances for the Capalaba Warriors that saw them earn nominations and then selection, but their off-field attitude too.

Capalaba president Tanya Bonney said the trio made it into this year’s City under 14 girls team and, while she wishes she could have nominated everyone at the club, Zee, Tasha and Kaydence have proven themselves time and time again.

“Selection doesn’t necessarily go 100 per cent on your ability, it goes on your club spirit as well and sportsmanship,” Bonney said.

“I could have nominated a dozen people to go but the three girls that went were selected on ability, sportsmanship and club ethics.

“Zee is polite and has really good football knowledge. Kaydence is the same.

“She will always offer to lend a hand, whether it be filling the fridge or taking the rubbish out. I can’t get her to clean to the toilets yet but she’ll always offer a hand when needed.

“Tash is new to the game but she’s taken to it pretty well. It was good to give a new person the opportunity to develop herself a bit more.”

Kaydence Marino-King, Zakeiya “Zee” Kopa-Sullivan and Tasha Milton (Photo : QRL)

Bonney said the Cultural Exchange gives players the opportunity to not only develop their game, but to open themselves up to new experiences.

She said as the trio of girls move through the grades – particularly Tash in her first year – the experience will benefit them for years to come.

“It gets the girls out of their comfort zone,” she said.

“You get comfortable playing with the same teams each week. This gives you the option to be playing with other people of the same experience.

“Then there’s the friendships that they’ll get out of it. Two of my boys went when they were younger and they still talk to some of the kids they played with and one of my boys is 20.

“It’s about being with like-minded people that are good at what they do.”

QRL North

Archer Orr went to this year’s Nate Myles Cup to have some fun.

But the Mackay Brothers Bulldogs young gun ended up walking away as the player of the carnival.

The northern tournament for under 13s teams saw 73 games of rugby league played across the weekend, and Archer stood out for his determination.

“Archer went out on the field to give 110 per cent in every game, whatever the result was,” his mother Leigh Orr said.

“He is trying to lead, to inspire the boys to play to the best of their abilities as well … (he showed) his fitness and stamina to keep attacking and defending throughout the game and not giving up.

“It has given him a huge boost of confidence, which will hopefully inspire him to keep improving. We are super proud of him and the way he has grown as a player in the last couple of years.

“With the advice and coaching of Matt Sander and Reece Del Simone and the Brothers Bulldogs family, they have really helped bring out the best in him.”

Archer Orr after winning player of the carnival at the Nate Myles Cup (Photo : QRL)

Archer has been playing rugby league since he was seven, taking the game up after seeing kids at school sign on.

Also into fishing, motorbike riding, barefoot skiing, and working on the family’s cane farm, Archer said he loves the game, especially for the camaraderie.

“I like to play with my teammates,” Archer said.

“It gives me a great opportunity to mix with other boys from other clubs as well. I like the competitiveness and the feeling I get when I have given it my all and have a win.

“I had been looking forward to the carnival all year as I knew how much fun we always have when we get together.

“My team played well even though we didn’t come away with as many wins as we would have liked.

But we enjoyed playing against all the other teams, which proved to be very strong and competitive teams.”

After a wipeout and a false start, rugby league’s famous Confraternity Carnival returns this year with the promise of a full competition for the first time since 2019.

And “Confro” – as it’s become known – held its opening ceremony just hours before Sunday night’s second State of Origin match underlines the Carnival’s importance in developing the next generation of Queensland league stars.

Eight Confraternity Carnival graduates are in the Maroons squad for Origin II – Daly Cherry-Evans (St Patrick’s College, Mackay), Cameron Munster (Emmaus College, Rockhampton), Valentine Holmes (Ignatius Park College, Townsville), Ben Hunt, Harry Grant and Corey Oates (St Brendan’s College, Yeppoon), Felise Kaufusi (Shalom College, Bundaberg) and Lindsay Collins (Padua College, Kedron).

Confraternity Carnival, supported by major sponsor CQUniversity, brings together schools teams from across Queensland.

48 schools will contest the boys’ competition while nine schools will contest only the second girls’ event. The carnival will be held in Mackay for the third time, and the first time since 1996.

Organised by Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Rugby League, Confraternity Carnival was held every year from 1980 until 2019. In 2020, the carnival could not be held because of COVID 19.

Last year, “Confro” had reached its quarter-final stages at Iona College when a COVID 19 lockdown in southeast Queensland forced its immediate cancellation.

More than 1000 schoolboys and almost 200 schoolgirls.

Almost all from Catholic schools along with some Independent schools – will make their way to North Queensland this weekend to play for one of the most cherished trophies in Queensland school sports. Mackay’s St Patrick’s College and Mercy College are the joint hosts.

Townsville’s Ignatius Park College – the home of some of North Queensland’s greatest players – will aim to break a drought and defend the Confraternity Shield that it won in the last tournament to be completed in Bundaberg in 2019.

Ignatius Park will attempt to become the first team to defend its Confraternity Shield title since St Brendan’s College, Yeppoon, backed up in 2015. The title has moved between teams since then as Confro continues to throw up graduates who become NRL stars.

The arrival of new players each year makes it difficult to predict winners but teams from outside southeast Queensland including Ignatius Park College, St Brendan’s College and The Cathedral College, Rockhampton will be competitive.

St Patrick’s College, Mackay will be among the favourites as it attempts to win its school’s first Confraternity Shield since 2003. That was St Patrick’s eighth Shield title and its third in four years in a stretch that included future stars Grant Rovelli and Brett Seymour.

Southeast Queensland’s claims lay with the likes of Johnathan Thurston’s alma mater St Mary’s College, Toowoomba and Xavier Coates’ former school Marymount College while a strong contingent of schools from the Associated Independent Colleges across greater Brisbane and beyond will also prove competitive.

The participating schools for the second girls’ competition – and the first to reach a final – are:

Shalom Catholic College (Bundaberg), St Joseph’s College (Toowoomba), Emmaus College (Rockhampton), The Cathedral College (Rockhampton), St Patrick’s College (Mackay), Marymount College (Burleigh Waters), Southern Cross Catholic College (Townsville), St Margaret Mary’s College (Townsville) and St Ursula’s College (Yeppoon).

Former NRL players Matt Geyer (Marymount) and his 1999 Melbourne Storm premiership teammate Tony Martin (The Cathedral College, Rockhampton), Chris McKenna (Iona College), Antonio Kaufusi (Shalom College girls), Scott Minto (St Brendan’s) and David Faiumu (Rockhampton Grammar) are involved in the coaching and management of teams.

QISSRL president and Padua College Rector Peter Elmore said Confraternity Carnival brought together teams united by a Christian background.

“The Carnival has grown in size since it was first contested in 1980 but it remains an event in which fair play, respect and fellowship are most highly valued,” Mr Elmore said.

“We are proud of the many schools and players who have contested this event over the decades. While there is a great list of former Confraternity players who have gone on to the game’s highest levels, we’re always just as proud of the manner in which the Carnival is played.

“Following the challenges of the last three years, we look to the carnival in Mackay with much optimism. Like previous regional carnivals.

I am sure that this year’s event will also make a significant contribution to the local community, and I thank the broader community of Mackay for their hospitality and their support.”

Janelle Agius, principal of the host schools, was excited by the event.

“St Patrick’s College and Mercy College united together are proud of being granted the privilege of hosting. The carnival brings together people and builds teamwork, resilience, integrity and community spirit,” Ms Agius said.

“These experiences will give (players) the strong foundations and skills required to tackle many more adventures that await them on their journey of life.”

The boys’ carnival is contested in three divisions of 16 teams each with matches to be played on June 27, June 28, June 30 and July 1.

The make-up of the divisions can be found at www.confraternitycarnival.com.au.

Each team plays two matches of 20-minute halves on the opening two days. Finals begin on the second afternoon and culminate in the Confraternity Shield final at 12.30pm on July 1.

The girls’ teams will each play two games on Monday, June 27 and two games on Tuesday, June 28.

Those results will determine the order for Thursday’s finals, during which each team will play one match. The girls’ grand final will be held at 1pm on Thursday, June 30.

The draw can be seen at www.confraternitycarnival.com.au.

All matches will be livestreamed on www.confraternitycarnival.com.au.

All scores will be updated on the Confraternity Carnival website and on the QISSRL Facebook page.

Mateship the winner at Adrian Vowles Cup

It was a definite case of mate versus mate at this year’s Adrian Vowles Cup, as players across the carnival momentarily switched allegiances to ensure one undermanned side didn’t miss out.

The successful and popular carnival kicked off in Charleville on February 25 with more than 1500 players in attendance.

Teams travelled

Teams travelled from the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Toowoomba and many other areas.

Including two teams from Mt Isa – to take part in the Adrian Vowles Cup, with accommodation in Charleville completely booked out.

But it was a team from Wallumbilla – just east of Roma – that stole the hearts of footy fans and players alike across the weekend.

The Red Bulls under 16s arrived with just seven players due to illness and other reasons, leaving them quite a few short of a full team.

Every year they usually come along with a full team and are one of the stronger clubs around Roma.

But, even without the numbers, they made the 300-kilometre trip west.

To honour those players who wanted to play and were rewarded with the “true spirit” of the carnival, as members from numerous other sides put up their hand to help out.

The Red Bulls had a full team in every game they played and even had players from four different clubs helping them out at one stage.

It’s one of the good things about carnivals like this – anyone can jump in to help somebody else.

We saw it all weekend, with players from different teams cleaning up the grounds on Sunday and one kid from Roma playing with multiple teams to help them out.

The list goes on.

It’s stories like these that make this carnival what it is each year.

The Valleys Red team defeated Redlands in the under 14s division.

When it came to the finals, the atmosphere was unbelievable and the three games all lived up to expectations.

The under 14s final between Valleys Red and Redlands went down to the wire, going into extra time at 4-4, with Valleys scoring the winning try.

Gatton Valleys were the winners for the under 17s girls.

The girls under 17s final was taken out by Gatton Valleys, who defeated Roma Cities 8-0, but all teams demonstrated just how much the quality of the female game is improving.

And, finally, the under 16s boys decider proved to be the highlight as Dalby and Toowoomba Brothers battled it out.

Unbelievable defence that not a point was scored, pushing the match into three periods of extra time.

In the end it was Dalby who crossed the line to win the game, but what an effort from both teams.

The Adrian Vowles Cup certainly has a different feel about it in the west and next season will be the tenth year it’s been played.

Plans are already underway so stay tuned for a bigger and better AV Cup in 2023.

Ipswich launch girls challenge to unearth new players

With more and more opportunities being created in Ipswich for women and girls to play rugby league at a high level.

It is important to ensure a strong field of young local talent is also developing at the junior level.

Rugby League Ipswich has launched an Under 12 Girls Challenge where they hope to see young girls flourish in a supportive environment as they learn the game and develop their skills.

The four-week challenge will be hosted at North Ipswich Reserve on Monday nights and will run from March 7 until March 28.

Four local clubs have signed on to be part of the challenge, with Brothers Juniors, Norths Ipswich Tigers, Redbank Plains Bears and Swifts Bluebirds all on board.

Interested players can head into one of the clubs to sign-up face-to-face or can register directly online via the PlayRugbyLeague.com website.

The challenge will place a focus on learning the basics of the game before participants hit the field with their new-found skills.

NRL TackleReady program

In the first week of the challenge, all participants and coaching staff will go through the NRL TackleReady program.

This will allow them to learn correct and safe techniques which will prepare players for the tackle version of rugby league.

The program aims to increase player confidence and physical competence in all tackling situations.

Ipswich girls grasp new opportunity to play

Rugby League Ipswich chair Dane McQueen said he was happy to see the new opportunity being offered to aspiring female players.

“Rugby League Ipswich is excited to provide an opportunity for young females to try rugby league,” McQueen said.

“The four-week challenge will allow our girls to run through NRL’s TackleReady program to provide them confidence and physical competence in all tackling situations.

“The challenge will be a load of fun, with great feedback coming from our clubs already.

We welcome all

“We welcome all 11 and 12-year-old girls to sign up and participate.”

Rugby League Ipswich devised the challenge as a way to encourage new participants to experience a taste of the game and see if they would like to then sign up to play a full junior season.

The female-focused program is also an opportunity for girls who are already playing rugby league in mixed teams to transition into playing in a female competition.

Registrations will remain open for under 12 girls for the year and if players enjoy the four weeks of the challenge.

There will be opportunities to continue playing rugby league in a female competition in the SEQ Female competition.

Any further queries regarding participation in the challenge can be directed to Mitch Kent at m.kent@qrl.com.au or to Rugby League Ipswich chair Dane McQueen at ipswich@qrl.com.au.
