Sharks on show as Endeavour sails towards schoolboys glory

Powered by a slew of emerging Sharks players, Caringbah-based Endeavour Sports High School will tackle Patrician Brothers’ College Blacktown in Wednesday’s prestigious Peter Mulholland Cup grand final.

The competition comprises the best schoolboy talent from NSW, Victoria and the ACT. Endeavour earned a place in the decider at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.

After advancing through the pool stage and fighting back from 14-0 down to defeat Canberra’s Erindale College 16-14 in last week’s thrilling preliminary final.

The winner of Endeavour and Patrician Brothers’ Blacktown will face the top Queensland school – Palm Beach Currumbin or Kirwan State High, who will clash on Thursday – for the NRL National Schoolboys Cup title on September 11.

Thirteen of Endeavour’s expected 17-man squad are Sharks juniors, nine of them having represented the club this season in the Harold Matthews Cup team guided to the finals by Brad Kelly, who is also a member of the school’s coaching staff.

The Cronulla contingent includes Australian Schoolboys pair Tom Dellow, a workhorse lock who was crowned the Sharks’ Junior Representative Player of the Year in May.

Nikora Williams, a strike centre who played SG Ball Cup this year before progressing swiftly to the under-21 Jersey Flegg ranks.

Endeavour coach Dave Howlett

Endeavour coach Dave Howlett, who has a storied association with the Sharks spanning more than 20 years including a stint as an NRL assistant coach, is confident his boys can defy their underdog tag and come away victorious.

“It’s a massive bonus for so many of our players to have that continuity at the Sharks and then jump in as the nucleus of our school team,” said Howlett, who has been Cronulla’s SG Ball head coach for the past three seasons.

“There’s also continuity in the coaching style given the Harold Matts coach – Brad Kelly – coaches with the school. That’s been a real foundation for our success this year.”

Endeavour has waged several memorable battles with Patrician Brothers’ Blacktown over the years, upstaging its rival in the 2014 national GIO Schoolboy Cup in what was the Sutherland Shire school’s most recent final.

A decade on, Howlett is hoping to repeat the dose.

“We’ve had a long history playing each other at the pointy end of schoolboy footy,” he said. “Their team has similar traits to their teams of previous years – they’ve got four Australian Schoolboys in their line-up, they’re big, they’re powerful.

“We know it’s going to be a big challenge for us, but we’re all excited about the opportunity. It’s been 10 years since we’ve been in a final.

“They had a team chock-full of Australian Schoolboys and we were the underdogs then as well. We’re hoping for the same outcome on Wednesday.

“There’s a real buzz around the school population, the staff and students.

“We could feel it last week when we came to school the next day. That buzz has built over the week. We’re looking forward to having strong support.”

A renowned nursery of world-class talent, Endeavour has produced a smorgasbord of NRL stars including current Sharks Will Kennedy and Teig Wilton.

Howlett and Kelly’s involvement, as well as Endeavour’s sterling reputation for developing young players in its argeted program, have helped ensure the long-term strength of Cronulla’s junior representative and pathways systems.

“We’re really proud of the link between the school and the Sharks,” Howlett said.

Kick-off between Endeavour Sports High School and Patrician Brothers’ College Blacktown on Wednesday is at 12.30pm. If you can’t make it to Campbelltown, the match will be streamed live through KommunityTV.

Westfields win last minute thriller

Struddys Appareal

NRL Schoolboys grand final live stream: Patrician Brothers Blacktown face unbeaten Westfields

For 59 minutes, Westfields played from behind. But in the craziest of finishes, they poked their noses in front when it mattered most to win their first NRL Schoolboys title in four years. Relive the action.

Replay: Peter Mulholland Cup grand final – Westfields Sports v Patrician Brothers Blacktown.

Westfields Sports High School has produced a stunning comeback victory over Patrician Brothers Blacktown to claim the 2023 Peter Mulholland Cup.

After trailing all game, Westfields took the lead in the dying seconds with a converted try to win 18-17.

It was an incredible end to a game Patties dominated in territory and seemed to have in their keeping. They just couldn’t put Westfields away.

And as the pressure built, Westfields came into their own, producing some incredible last-ditch defence and then peppering the Patties defensive line with charges from their forwards until their opponent’s resolve snapped.

Roy Quiroz-Mapusua was the hero, charging onto a short ball and taking three defenders over the line with him next to the posts. Teammate Lachlan Galvin would have been the most relieved player on the field after spoiling a near-certain try minutes earlier – and then being sin binned.

Celebration time for Westfields after their title success (Photo : Steve Montgomery)

“It was stupid of me,” Galvin said.

“I was shattered, I thought we’d done all that hard work and I’ve just lost them the game.

“But we’re a real brotherhood and they got me the win.

“I’m just really, really happy.”

Galvin said the title had been a long time coming.

“We’ve been wanting this since year seven and now it’s finally happened,” he said.

“We were close last year but got knocked out in the major semi and this year we finally won it, so onto the national final now.”

Earlier, Patties seemed to have a completely different team to the one that lost to Westfields in the opening round back in May and were much more confident and aggressive in the opening exchanges.

Australian Schoolboys Wilson Decourcey broke the deadlock 10 minutes in, finding space with four Westfields defenders around him to plant the ball just over the line.

Patties had all the momentum and winger Aidan Keborian crossed in the corner five minutes later to add a second.

Westfields couldn’t find a way through, until Lachlan Galvin did what he’s done so well this year, and that’s create a big opportunity.

Galvin stormed down the field, dodging defenders until he was finally caught 20 metres out. Fullback Daniel Waqa then managed to push through for a try, and a successful conversion put Westfields back in the game.

So close yet so far for Patties Blacktown (Photo : Steve Montgomery)

A late field goal to Patties Blacktown gave them a seven-point advantage at the break.

But it was Westfields who scored first in the second half when Brycen Anae Roberts touched down – there was only one point in it now.

Patties took a while to respond but Jack Nicholas was in the right place at the right time to score in the corner.

The tension came to a head with minutes remaining as Galvin dropped the ball as he was about to score an easy try.

The resulting scuffle put both Galvin and Patties’ Decourcey in the sin-bin.

Westfields quickly bounced back with a try straight after.

A successful conversion with less than a minute to go out Westfields ahead for the first time all game.

PREVIEW

The season kicked off way back on March 21 at Seabrook Reserve in Melbourne’s western suburbs with a southern pool clash between The Grange and Hallam.

Now, 38 games later, the Peter Mulholland Cup is down to the final two teams.

And that the decider is between these big rivals from the seeded pool could hardly be a surprise. Patrician Brothers Blacktown are peaking at the right time while Westfields have hardly put a foot wrong all year.

The 2023 Peter Mulholland Cup champions will be decided on Wednesday, with all the NRL Schoolboys action to be available LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on KommunityTV, along with the Schoolgirls Cup decider. Check out the schedule below for full details.

1pm: Westfields Sports High School v Patrician Brothers, Blacktown

It may have been frustrating start to the year, but Patties Blacktown have suddenly hit a purple patch of form.

They were all-but dismissed as contenders for the Peter Mulholland Cup title after two troubling losses to start their campaign, but Pats are now on the cusp of their first title since 2018.

But standing in their way is footy juggernaut Westfields Sports High School, who boast an undefeated run through the pool and finals stages.

Patties’ season began with defeats to Westfields and Hills Sports, where they gave away comfortable halftime leads.

“It was frustrating,” Pats coach Noah Meares said.

“I think we were the better team for both games, at least for large parts of them. .

Patrician Brothers Blacktown celebrate their win over St Dominic’s. Pic: Katrina May

“I think we were hit with some 50-50 calls that didn’t go our way, and we weren’t able to stem the flow from them, we just needed to be better.”

And better they have been, securing dominant wins over Endeavour (44-6), Victoria University Secondary College (64-6) and St Dominic’s College (32-0) on their way to a grand final berth

“I think the chemistry from working together and trusting the process in what we’re building, returning to what Pats is known for, is giving us motivation,” Pats fullback and Australian Schoolboy Wilson de Courcey said.

“We know we can get it done and that’s just helped our confidence.”

Pats faced their grand final opponents in the opening round, where Westfields came back from a 12-4 halftime deficit to take the win 24-18.

Bouncing back after trailing early on has been a theme for Westfields, who conceded the first try in three of their five matches this season, including their quarterfinal win over All Saints Maitland and the semifinal success over Erindale.

However, Westfields coach Troy Weeden said he wasn’t concerned with the trend and has been happy with the performances.

Westfields player Roy Quiroz-Mapusua. Picture: David Swift.

“It’s probably a good thing actually,” Weeden said.

“We know we can do it no matter what position we are in the game.”

Westfields centre Roy Quiroz-Mapusua shared similar sentiments after the semifinal win.

“I’m not too concerned about coming from behind the past couple of weeks,” Quiroz-Mapusua said.

“Pats are a good side, but I believe in our boys. We’ve done it once, we can do it again.”

Erindale knock-out reigning premiers to advance to PMC Finals

Erindale knock-out reigning premiers

Erindale College have eliminated the reigning Peter Mulholland Cup premiers, Patrician Brothers Fairfield, defeating them 22-10 at Seiffert Oval to advance to the quarter finals.

Erindale centre Mark Tuialii was a standout for the red, black and white, proving a handful on the right-edge and scoring the match sealing try.

Erindale will now cruise through to the quarter finals of the 2023 competition undefeated, beating out Patrician Brothers, Illawarra SHS and Matraville SHS.

The ACT side started the game in perfect fashion, gaining early field position to strike on the right edge through Dakai Lilo-Bolatagaci to crack the first points.

After some solid Fairfield defence, Erindale finally cracked through for their second of the day, this time Sam Gash linking up with the opposite centre Peter Soward to extend their lead to 8-nil.

Erindale left the door ajar after an impressive first half, making a mistake coming out of trouble to give Patrician Brothers an opportunity.

Fairfield made them pay, Saia Alatini crashing over in the final minutes to close the gap to 8-6 at the halftime break.

Erindale coach Ash Barnes fired his boys up at halftime and they responded early, pouncing on a Fairfield mistake to open the scoring in the second half through Xavier Cacciotti.

Gash had an off day with the boot, missing his first three shots at conversion, leaving the scores 12-6 after 33 minutes.

Patrician Brothers fought their way back in the game, yet again making Erindale pay for an unforced error with Jezia Tua’au going over in the corner, closing the score to 12-10.

The match entered an arm-wrestle for the next ten minutes with both sides showing fight and some outstanding scrambling defence.

But it was the man of the match who broke the deadlock, Mark Tuialii, who received some early ball from Mitchell Brophy to show his speed and footwork to score in the corner.

Gash’s conversion waved away, holding a tight 16-10 lead with six minutes to go.

Fairfield attempted a short kick-off but it was defused by the Erindale defence before giving away back-to-back penalties which killed their chances of a comeback.

Halfback Ethan Alaia put the game to bed, springing off his left-foot to beat four defenders and score the match winner in an incredible individual effort.

Gash got a great cheer from the crowd as he converted the try to extend Erindale’s lead to 22-10 at fulltime.

Patties add another half century

Illawarra SHS host Patrician Brothers Fairfield

Peter Mulholland Cup live stream: Illawarra Sports High host Patrician Brothers, Fairfield in big match-up

That’s over 100 points in two games now for the defending NRL Schoolboys champions who have set their sights on a pivotal showdown with Erindale next month.

Watch a full replay as Illawarra Sports v Patrician Brothers Fairfield.

Patrician Brothers, Fairfield have blown Illawarra off the park in a 58-10 demolition at Sid Parrish Oval.

The defending premiers were simply the hungrier of the two sides, overpowering Illawarra with their intensity and strong post-contact metres all game.

Defensively as well Patties were resolute, unlike the Illawarra who will be kicking themselves for a number of costly missed tackles.

Lock forward Bailey Myers, who picked up a double, was pleased with his side’s attitude throughout the match.

“The boys played really well considering we had a few out injured,” Myers said.

“We stuck to our plan and got the job done.”

Myers highlighted the efforts of fill-in halfback Brandon Navarro as crucial to his side’s success.

The workrates of Patties second rowers Nevaeh Pritchard and Jezaiah Funa-Luta were second to none, both heavily involving themselves and making some tough carries through the middle of the park.

Hooker Zaidas Muagututia had the ball on a string all days as he picked up an impressive four assists, twice to lock Myers and twice to rampaging interchange forward Livai Saukuru, the last of which was a beautiful flick pass for the highlight reel.

Junior Fagelele picked up an excellent solo try from centre, breaking through a hole down the right flank with a mean dummy and racing half the field to score.

Skilful five-eighth Chad Daniels, highlighted by coach Frank Pritchard as one to watch, also got on the scoresheet and picked up an assist to Ratu Cayuqueo.

It wasn’t all gloom for the Illawarra, with both wingers Ben Kami and Ben Binene finishing tries in opposite corners to break the Pattie’s defence for the first time this year.

Overall though, a convincing win for Patrician Brothers Fairfield who piled on 11 tries and remain strong contenders on this year’s competition.

PREVIEW

Patrician Brothers, Fairfield aren’t getting caught up in scorelines.

Patties picked up right where they left off in 2022 with their opening game 56-0 demolition of Matraville.

Their next opponent, Illawarra Sports High, on the other hand, were totally outplayed by Erindale, going down 38-8.

Despite the massive round one points discrepancy, the defending NRL Schoolboys champions are wary of the dangers Illawarra possess, particularly their ‘middles and edges’.

You catch every moment of this match at Sid Parrish Oval from 1pm on Wednesday exclusively on KommunityTV as part of our two-year deal to cover the NRL Schoolboys Cup competition. See the full NRL Schoolboys schedule.

Patrician Brothers coach Frank Pritchard identified the strength of his spine players as big contributors to their productivity in attack in the first round, namely five-eighth Chad Daniels who had a super opening round performance.

“The confidence we showed early last week was great,” he said.

“We went out with the intention of trying to be defensively really strong to start the game, which we were, and ended up coming away with a big scoreline.”

But Pritchard believes there’s still room for his side to improve if they want to retain their crown in 2023.

“We had a few too many set incompletions for our liking, especially after scoring a try,” Prichard said.

Patties were great in both defence and attack against Matraville

“Luckily we were good defensively and we weren’t punished for this.”

Illawarra struggled to get the ball into attacking areas against a resolute Erindale side last week, but Pritchard knows his side will have to be at their best.

“We watched their game – we know we have to focus on stopping their middles and their edges,” Pritchard said.

One such middle that stood out for Illawarra last week was damaging front rower Palu Tuasala who was proving difficult to handle even for a solid defensive side like Erindale.

As for the edges, Harry Wililo has the x-factor to do damage from centre, as he showed with one of his side’s tries against Erindale.

“If we let them get to work, we could be in for a tough afternoon.”

St Greg’s Team of the Decade 1991-2000

This was a very successful decade at the College with 3 Schoolboy Cup wins (1991,1993 and 2000 Nutri-Grain Cup).

We also took home 3 MCS titles during this period and multiple other knock-out competitions.

At the helm of the side for the early 90’s was the one and only Peter Mulholland who still to this day is the most successful schoolboy rugby league coach in history (involved in 8 wins) and that is a record that will likely never be beaten.

His assistant during this time then took the reigns and Simon Huntley was head coach from 1994-2001 which made selection a little easier.

Thankfully we managed to speak to Peter before his passing about all things rugby league at St Greg’s..
So to the side!

And what a side it is.

Featuring 11 Australian Schoolboys and 16 players who had careers in the NRL! As photographs were scarce from this period we went with the old school team photo and some photoshopping!

Wearing the number 1 jersey is Matt Seers. Matt was electric on the field and could play anywhere in the backline.

He made the Australian Schoolboys team In 92 and played wing, centre and five-eighth but fullback became his home when he made his first grade debut for the Bears a year after he left school.

He went on to play 199 games for Norths, Wests and Wakefield, and was selected in the NSW Origin teams between 95-97.

Also highly rated here was Andrew Sanderson (1991) who was a terrific fullback.

He was difficult to bring down when returning the ball, and had excellent speed, he makes the extended bench.

John Deery (1993), was also another excellent fullback who takes one place on the wing in the side.

John was safe under the highball, a strong runner of the ball, incredibly fit and hit hard.

He also made an NRL debut and played games for the Dragons and Roosters. On the other wing is another Australian Schoolboy, Russell Richardson.

Russel could play wing, centre and fullback and had excellent speed and evasive skills.

Russell also became a world class centre playing 120 games for the Sharks, South’s and Knights and was selected for the Australian side in 1997 and 1999.

Honourable mentions go to Matthew Primmer (2000) who had an exceptional cup winning season on the wing that year, and makes the extended squad.

In the centres we have another pair of Australian Schoolboys

Blake Reavell (1997) who played three Seasons in the First XIII and had lightning speed, he was hard hitting in defence and scored countless tries in the sky blue and maroon.

His partner is Tim Horan (1991) who could play in the centres or at number six, he had an excellent kicking game and if there was a hole in the defensive line he would find it.

Tim also played 49 games for the Bunnies, Western Reds and Steelers.

At 7 is Kris Flint, who had a very memorable 1993 season (winning the Peter Sterling Medal in the final after being sent off!).

He was a terrific playmaker with fast acceleration and excellent vision, and when you see his highlights reel you will see plenty of this. Kris also snuck a few games in with the Panthers.

Also worth mentioning is Riley Mullins (2000) who was also a Peter Sterling medalist in the Cup final that year.

Riley was tough, crafty and had an excellent kicking game and was certainly in the debate for the 7.

Another half who was exceptional in the skyblue and maroon was Kain Cross (1991) who was zippy around the ruck, a smart footballer who never took a backward step. He takes a spot on the extended bench.

Wearing the 6 jersey is yet another Australian Schoolboy, Trent Barrett.

Trent played in the centres and at six in the first grade squads he played in and was outstanding in either position.

He was as fit as anyone could be and by all reports a beast in the gym, but on the field he was difficult to defend against, hard running and had excellent skills with ball in hand.

Post school Trent had an outstanding NRL career playing 295 games for the Steelers, Dragons, Wigan and Cronulla.

He also played 11 State of Origins for NSW and 15 matches in the green and gold for Australia.

Trent got the nod over Damien Chapman (1991, also an Australian Schoolboy) who had terrific 1990/91 seasons and was player of the year in 1991.

Damien was a skilful half, setting up and scoring tries, had great speed and kicked goals from everywhere.

He is another who went into the NRL playing 42 games for the Dragons, Western Reds and London Broncos and takes a place on the bench in the side.

Finally worth mentioning is Dallas Gonzo who played two seasons in the First XIII in the centres and at five-eighth in the Cup winning 93 side. Dallas was a terrific footballer, an excellent defender and hard running 6.

He takes a spot in the extended squad also.

At hooker the selectors were unanimous, Simon Bonetti (1994).

Tough as nails and a fearless defender, Simon went onto play six seasons with the Roosters clocking up 142 appearances in a terrific career which finished with a Premiership in 2002.

Simon took the starting spot but another exceptionally good defender and hooker was Robbie Mears (1992) who was certainly discussed at the selection table.

He was also an Australian Schoolboy, played well above his weight and was always involved on the field.

Up front is Michael Francis (1992) and Peter Cusack (1994) with Daniel Heckenberg (1997) taking a spot on the bench.

Mick was one of St Greg’s hardest hitting forwards, and we have featured him before on this page.

Mick was another Australian Schoolboy and renowned for his hard running and exceptional defence, playing well above his playing weight.

Mick played a number of seasons with South’s (playing 56 games) and a couple for London Broncos before retirement.

Peter Cusack had a terrific 94 season always putting his hand up for the hard runs and another hard hitter in defence.

Peter used his size to his advantage and always got the team moving forward.

He had an excellent NRL career playing 95 games for the Roosters, 73 for the Bunnies and another 62 for Hull. He was also selected for NSW Country on two occasions.

Off the bench is Daniel Heckenberg who also used his size to his advantage.

He ran hard and with confidence and defensive lines often buckled trying to take him down.

Daniel was another to have a successful NRL career playing 78 games for St George, Parramatta and the Sea Eagles before another 84 games in the English Super League.

These three got the nod over Kelvin Bramley (1994) and Nathan Boller (1991) who were also highly rated prop forwards.

Kelvin was Peter’s front row partner in 94 and was equally as important to the side.

He takes a spot on the extended bench.

In the backrow are another pair of Australian Schoolboys, and 1993 teammates being Wayne Evans and Peter Driscoll.

Wayne was a dangerous forward who could also play in the centres (where he did play at times), he had speed and size which made him very difficult to handle for opposing sides.

Wayne had an outstanding 93 season and post school played 90 games for the Western Reds, Melbourne Storm and Northern Eagles and finished his career at the London Broncos.

Peter was known as a gentle giant, not many ran with the ball harder and he always put his body on the line in defence.

He could also play in the front row where he played for South’s, notching up 37 games over three seasons.

Also in discussion was Michael Ostini who was a leader on the field and played his heart out every game, he makes the extended squad and features in the highlights.

Finally at lock is another fearless forward who had the skills of a half.

Michael Howell (2000) was hard, he ran hard and hit hard, but he could also kick, throw cut-out balls and led the forward pack in the 2000 Cup winning side.

He bled blue and maroon and his teammates loved playing with him. Michael also made his NRL debut for the Dragons were he made 15 appearances over two seasons.

What a side and what a decade!

Patrician Bro’s come from behind to win Schoolboy Cup

NRL Schoolboys grand final between Patrician Brothers, Fairfield and Hill Sports High

Patrician Brothers Fairfield snapped a 30-year NRL Schoolboys title drought in style, storming home from 16 points down to stun Hills Sports.

Moments away from losing the NRL Schoolboys Cup grand final, Patrician Brothers Fairfield’s number 12 pulled out all the stops.

He charged down a clearing kick, regathered and dived over the line in the 59th minute to lift his side to an incredible 20-16 comeback victory over Hills Sports High School at Leichhardt Oval on Wednesday afternoon.

When all seemed lost, Joshua Alhazim came up big. For his tireless efforts throughout an often brutal game, he was awarded the man of the match.

An impressive second-half performance proved the difference as Pats climbed off the canvas from 16 points down to take the title in the dying seconds.

Hills looked likely to win comfortably when they raced out a 16-0 lead early in the second half before Pats found their footing and poured on the pressure late. It was their first title since 1992.

Despite being the toast of his school, Alhazim was quick to share the glory among his teammates.

“It is a reward for all the boys’ hard work, the coaching staff, Frank (Pritchard), our principal. It is the reward for all their hard work over the years,” he said.

“I couldn’t thank them enough. The school have been supporting us for the last two years tremendously and we couldn’t have done it without them.”

Despite the early scoreline concern and losing prop Jordan Miller to the sin bin late in the first half, he never gave up hope.

“Every single game we went into this year, we never doubted it. We always thought we would come on top.”

Pats coach Frank Pritchard praised his team’s effort and determination.

“A lot of people had written us off, but the boys showed grit and resilience,” he said.

“That’s what we’ve done all year.”

The atmosphere was incredible, with a huge crowd enjoying a game of incredible twists and turns.

Hills got away early and led 10-0 at the break. Pats though turned the tables, winning the second half 20-6.

It was a trio of tries from captain Yehya Ayache, left wing Noah Funa and prop Miller that saw them rally to 16-14 with just minutes to play.

Alhazim then produced his magic.

Hills fullback Blake Metcalfe was one of the best for the losing side.

It was his four-pointer right on the halftime whistle that saw the side extend their lead.

It was followed by a try from five-eighth Jonathan Ibrahim early on in the second half.

The first half was a real arm wrestle. Despite both side entering enemy territory on multiple occasions, it was not until the 15th minute that points were added to the board, after Hills right wing Alaa Lababidi flew over the white line.

The game will go down in history, with Patties taking the win on the full time whistle.

It was a one-pointer kick from Patties five-eighth Taj’h Colquhoun on the 60th minute that prevented the game from going to extra time.

Thrilled with the final score, Patties trainer Josh Morgan said: “Words can’t explain how much it means to the school and us and it’s put us back on the map.”

Incredible field goal steals victory in semi-final

Watch the amazing moment Patrician Brothers Fairfield secures the win in the NRL Schoolboys Cup in the final seconds.

It was as if the weather knew what an important day it was, with the sunshine allowing for Campbelltown Stadium to be flooded with crowds.

Despite Westfields winning the second half 14-3, it was not enough to overcome their early deficit from the first 30 minutes, and will now be unable to defend their title as Schoolboy Cup champions.

It was the individual efforts of Westfields left wing Will Craig that kept them in contention, scoring two consecutive tries within two minutes in the second half, followed by a four-pointer from left center Roy Quiroz Mapusoa.

The speed of both Westfields fullback Luke Laulilii and right center Daniel Waqa was exceptional, with the agile players darting their way through the Patties ranks on multiple occasions.
