We take a look at our four junior representative round 8 fixtures from Sunday, with our Harold Matthews side closing in on a place in the finals.

Harold Matthews Cup

Dragons 6 – 30 Sea Eagles

2025 Membership ON SALE NOW

The Sea Eagles’ Harold Matthews Cup side have made it two wins on the fly with a convincing 30-6 victory over the St George Dragons at Jubliee Stadium, Kogarah.

The win sees them sit in fifth place on the ladder with 12 competition points, tied with three other teams and only two points behind first and second place.

Manly soared to an 18-0 lead at the break thanks to three first half tries from Ashton Large, Kai Brennan and Max Prykiel.

Hooker Large used his agility and strength to burrow under the defence from dummy half for a try in the sixth minute.

Prop Brennan used his brute strength to force his way over the line after taking a short ball from lock Lukas Butler inside the ten-metre line.

Brennan pushed past three defenders to score and take his side’s lead to 12-0 with 13 minutes played.

The Sea Eagles switched it on in the 24th minute with a well-worked team try to send half-back Max Prykiel over.

A quick shift to the right edge found the side in open space, with a draw and pass back infield finding fullback Oscar Crotty with his opposing number to beat.

Crotty was patient and drew Cody Field in with ease before passing to Prykiel to send him over untouched for an 18-0 scoreline.

Manly carried their momentum into the second half with a try for Sifa Oldfield in the 46th minute.

The captain created something from nothing in a moment of sheer brilliance, breaking through a tackle at the halfway line and streaking downfield with defenders chasing before grounding the ball under the posts for a 24-0 lead.

The Dragons scored their only try in the 49th minute through Jasais Ah Kee before Oldfield crossed again for his second eight minutes later.

Manly’s second-rower chased in support as winger Tom Longland and replacement Beau McKee combined down the right edge to break through the defence.

Beau McKee offloading to Oldfield at the ten-metre line to set up the try for a final scoreline of 30-6.

Final Match: Round 9 vs Parramatta Eels @ Sydney Academy of Sport and Recreation, Sunday April 6 at 10am.

SG Ball Cup

Sea Eagles 24 – 28 Magpies

Manly’s under 19’s side showed grit and determination despite the outcome as they went down the the Western Suburbs Magpies 28-24 in round 8 at Seddon Park.

The Sea Eagles shot out to a quick 12-0 lead in the first 11 minutes thanks to tries from centre Brendan Couzens and half-back Beau Alexander.

Couzens capitalised on a mistake from the Magpies on their own tryline off the back of a grubber kick to ground the ball for a simple try in the sixth minute.

Five minutes later and Manly were in again thanks to a crafty link-up between Alexander and centre Max Davies.

The latter found space down the sideline with some silky footwork and grubber kicked back infield towards Alexander, who gathered the ball and scored to take his side’s lead to 12-0.

The Magpies bounced back with tries to Riley Oitmann and Luani Tuifua in the moments before half-time to see the scores locked up at 12-all at the break.

Western Suburbs’ prop Christian Taupau-Moors used his strength to force his way past four defenders for a try in the 37th minute, giving the visitors an 18-12 lead.

The Magpies extended their lead with two quick tries to Callum McMenemy and Sonny Edwards-Moeke in the 42nd and 56th minute to propel their lead to 28-12 with 23 minutes remaining.

After a big break to surge into the Magpies’ territory, Manly utility Lachlan Simpson capitalised on the sleepy defence to score out of dummy half.

Simpson scooped the ball up and pushed past two defenders to score and cut the deficit to 28-18, with a comeback still on the cards.

The Sea Eagles scored on the stroke of full-time, with victory unfortunately out of reach.

Simpson began the attack in his own half, weaving through the defenders before finding Davies in support.

The latter passed to full-back Cooper Elkins, who stepped past one defender to score for a final scoreline of 28-24.

Final Match: Round 9 vs Parramatta Eels @ Sydney Academy of Sport and Recreation, Sunday April 6 at 11:30am.

Lisa Fiaola Cup

Sea Eagles 0 – 48 CC Roosters

Manly’s Under 17’s side slumped to a 48-0 defeat to the Central Coast Roosters in round 8 at Berkeley Vale Oval on the Central Coast.

The Roosters stormed out to a 32-0 lead at half-time thanks to seven first-half tries as the rain poured down on the Central Coast.

Manly were no match as the Roosters ran rampant in the second half, scoring four more tries for a final scoreline of 48-0.

Final Match: Round 9 vs Canberra Raiders @ Sydney Academy of Sport and Recreation, Sunday April 6 at 1pm.

Tarsha Gale Cup

Sea Eagles 0 – 30 Indigenous Academy

The Sea Eagles’ Tarsha Gale Cup side also suffered defeat on the Central Coast, going down to the Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy 30-0 in the penultimate match for the season.

Four quick tries in the opening 20 minutes gave the visitors an 18-0 lead, with Fa’agase Tupuola-Palale and Manisha Seebeck each grabbing a double.

Tupuola-Palale shot out the gates in the second half for the Roosters with two more tries in the 34th and 43rd minute to take her tally to four tries for the match.

Te Raukura Leafe scored the Roosters’ final try in the 59th minute for a 30-point victory.

The Sea Eagles had a handful of chances throughout the match but weren’t able to capitalise and break through the Roosters’ compact defence.

Final Match: Round 9 vs Canberra Raiders @ Sydney Academy of Sport and Recreation, Sunday April 6 at 2:30pm.

A brief review of Manly Warringah Sea Eagles junior representative matches over the weekend.

Lisa Fiaola Cup

The Sea Eagles Lisa Fiaola Cup team (U17s) suffered a heavy defeat in their first match of the season, beaten 50-4 by the Sharks at Cronulla.

Sharks 50 – 4 Sea Eagles

Down 16-0 after 17 minutes, it was a tough slog for our girls in the Shire, against a very talented Sharks outfit.

The Sea Eagles trailed 20-0 at half time and that soon became 32-0 before prop Paula Halaholo forced her way to the line with about 12 minutes remaining to score the Sea Eagles’ first and only try of the match.

The Sharks ran in nine tries to one to secure their first win of the season after a loss to the Panthers in Round 1.

Tarsha Gale Cup

The Sea Eagles Tarsha Gale Cup team (U19s) also suffered a heavy defeat in their first match of the season, beaten 48-6 by the Sharks at Cronulla.

Sharks 48 – 6 Sea Eagles

Much like our U17s, our U19s got off to a slow start, conceding three tries in the first 17 minutes and from there it was an uphill battle.

A powerful Sharks side scored five unanswered tries to lead 26-0 at half time, running in a further four unanswered tries after the break.

Manly was the last to score, in the 60th minute, when winger Janita-Lily Leota-Brown found the line.

Mirroring their Lisa Fiaola team, the Sharks ran in nine tries to one to score their first win of the season after a loss to the Panthers in Round 1.

Harold Matthews Cup

The Sea Eagles Harold Matthews Cup team claimed its first win of the season on Saturday with an emphatic 34-10 victory over the Central Coast Roosters at 4 Pines Park.

Sea Eagles 24 – 10 CC Roosters

The home side led 14-4 at half time, running in four second half tries, including a second four-pointer to prop Cameron Makey.

Manly Junior reps wrap rnd 2 (Photo : Sea Eagles Media)

A near perfect start saw Sea Eagles fullback Tahj Hamilton open the scoring in the second minute of play, before the Roosters levelled the score with a try of their own 10 minutes later.

2025 Membership on SALE NOW

Makey crossed from close range before a clever try out wide to centre Oscar Crotty, who collected his own kick off a sweeping backline play.

The Roosters were first to score in the second half when replacement forward Eli Bennett stormed over to make it 14-10.

Captain Sifa Oldfield showed grit and intent to find the line before Makey bagged his second to have the home side up 26-10.

Late tries to winger Sonny Colella and fullback Jack Kalms put a full stop on a well deserved win.

Next up for our U17s is a bye before a Round 4 match against the Storm in Melbourne.

SG Ball Cup

The Sea Eagles suffered a 32-4 loss to the Illawarra Steelers in Round 2 of the SG Ball Cup at 4 Pines Park on Saturday.

Sea Eagles 4 – 32 Steelers

After a solid win against the Warriors in Round 1, a poor start against the Steelers saw the home side concede three unanswered tries in the opening 15 minutes.

The Steelers left side attack caused Manly’s right edge plenty of problems, with the first three tries scored from close range.

The Sea Eagles first try came about 10 minutes before half time when winger Ben Askew crossed in the northeastern corner to have his side trailing 16-4.

A curving grubber in behind the line from five-eighth Onitoni Large bounced kindly for Askew to score his second try of the season.

Steelers half Kade Reed kicked a 44m penalty goal on the stroke of half time, adding to his three successful conversions, to make it 18-4 at the break.

The visitors extended their lead early in the second half when winger Tom Kirk accepted a clever flick pass to cross in the corner. Reed adding the extras from the sideline to make 24-4.

The Sea Eagles had some chances but were denied on a couple of occasions by a hungry Steelers’ goal line defence.

The visitors scored a fifth and final try, again down Manly’s right side, when centre Zane Timmins – nephew of Steelers coach Shaun Timmins – crossed five minutes from time.

A penalty goal from Reed, who booted six from seven attempts, completed the 32-4 victory for the Steelers.

Next up for Manly’s SG Ball team is a Round 3 match against Balmain Tigers at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday 15th February.

Plenty of fine local talent in Manly Development team

The heavy focus on promoting talented young rugby league players from the Manly Warringah District Junior Rugby League is again evident in this year’s Sea Eagles Development squad.

The U16s squad, made up of players from across the Manly JRL, features 23 local juniors.

Matt Orford returns as the Sea Eagles Coach after taking the Sea Eagles development team to an undefeated season last year.

Orford played 109 first grade games for Manly and was captain of the club’s 2008 premiership winning team that beat Melbourne Storm 40-0 in the Grand Final.

Former 2011 premiership winning Sea Eagles player Jamie Buhrer is an Assistant Coach.

Orford said the squad’s sheer ability and willingness to learn had impressed him.

“What stood out most significantly during the pre-season was the mateship these players have formed in such a short space of time,” Orford said.

“They are very determined to do well and they are a hardworking group with great sportsmanship. You can see how motivated they are to get a positive result.”

Orford said he was enjoying the opportunity to develop the players’ skills.

“I want to further develop and install the fundamentals of our game in them,” he added.

“It is not only to improve their skills and performance but to also build their confidence and character as young men.”

The Sea Eagles play St George Dragons at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium, Kogarah, on Saturday, February 10, at 9am, in the first of four games this season.

Sea Eagles Matthews Cup go down 28-20 to Illawarra

Manly Warringah Sea Eagles suffered a frustrating 28-20 loss to the Illawarra Steelers in round three of the NSWRL Harold Matthews Cup today.

Following a first round loss and a bye last week, the Sea Eagles took their home game to Western Sydney at Aubrey Keech Reserve, Hinchinbrook, with 4 Pines Park unavailable.

The Steelers opened the scoring in the fifth minute through a try to lock Palu Tausala next to the posts. Half-back Kade Reed converted for a 6-0 lead.

The Sea Eagles hit back five minutes later when second-rower Mitchell Taotua used brute strength to carry several defenders over the line to score next to the posts. Half-back Jackson Cahill-Smith converted for a 6-all scoreline after 11 minutes.

Two minutes later, the Sea Eagles were in again after they shifted the ball to the left for winger Nepote Taufa to carry two defenders over with in the corner for a 10-6 lead. The try was not converted.

The Steelers drew level when winger Samson McAllister-Wood took a crossfield kick to score in the corner for a 10-all scoreline.

Illawarra then took a 16-10 lead when Clay Baldock converted a try after centre Hayden Buchanan crashed over next to the posts in the 20th minute. The score remained that way to half-time.

Second half

The Sea Eagles started the second half strongly and were rewarded with a fine try to full-back Lehi Hopoate.

The exciting full-back showed his pace to beat several defenders in a 30 metre run to the line. Cahill-Smith converted for a 16-all scoreline after 35 minutes.

The Steelers replied quickly with a second try to Buchanan near the posts after a bad defensive read by the Sea Eagles from a mistake. Baldock converted for a 22-16 lead after 39 minutes.

Manly went close to scoring two minutes later but prop Kakile Leha lost the ball short of the line.

The Sea Eagles then responded well through a try to centre Maxwell Taotua out wide after it came off a great barnstorming run earlier from second-rower Roy Quiroz-Mapusa. Cahill.

Smith failed to convert to leave Manly trailing 22-20.

Unfortunately for Manly, another mistake by Manly from the kick-off eventually led to Illawarra scoring next to the posts through Tausala. Baldock converted for a 28-20 lead with nine minutes remaining.

The Sea Eagles tried valiantly to pull the lead back in and lost two players to the sin bin inside the final minute.

Some poor discipline and too many errors cost them dearly in the end to give Illawarra their first win following two heavy losses.

Code of Conduct breaches issued for Junior Reps incidents

The NSWRL has today issued Code of Conduct breach notices to five players and officials and spectators face season bans following two separate incidents at junior football matches in Canberra and Penrith last weekend.

Following an investigation by the NSW Rugby League, the proposed penalties.

(upon conviction) include a 20-month suspension of an assistant coach, suspension until the end of the year for a female spectator and the suspension of three Harold Matthews players for varying weeks; while a group of spectators is being dealt with by NSW Police.

The strong action follows an incident involving players and spectators after a Harold Matthews Cup match between the Canberra Raiders and Manly Warringah Sea Eagles at Belconnen Oval, Canberra,

On Saturday (5 February); and a second crowd incident at the completion of a Junior Representatives match at BlueBet Stadium, Penrith, on Saturday.

NSW Rugby League Chief Executive David Trodden said he was appalled by the behaviour of players and spectators and has instigated a review of all NSWRL grounds to ensure adequate security arrangements are in place.

“We have zero tolerance for behaviour that threatens the safety of participants, officials and spectators and incidents like these are contrary to the standards of any community sport,” Trodden said.

“We have a duty to eradicate this sort of behaviour from our game so that those who play and/or attend community sport can enjoy it and do so without any concerns or fears.

“Some of the recent crowd behaviour is criminal behaviour and if people behave that way, they should expect to be dealt with by the Police in accordance with the criminal law rather than by our Code of Conduct committee.

“In addition we will review all of our grounds to ensure that ground set-up minimises possible interaction between players and spectators, as well as ensuring that appropriate security arrangements are in place.”

Trodden said the Code of Conduct breaches issued today mean that, if convicted of the charges, those charged cannot act in an official role for any Rugby League activities until their suspension expires.

In addition, the spectator charged (Saulima) is also prohibited from attending any NSWRL games until the end of the suspension. The recipients of breach notices have until 5pm 15 February 2022 to respond to the notices. The charges and proposed suspensions are as follows:

– Jay Younis (Manly Warringah Sea Eagles Harold Matthews Cup assistant coach) suspended for 20 months from 9 February 2022;

– (Ms) Lipe Saulima (spectator) suspended until 31 December 2022;

– varying sentences for three Harold Matthews Cup players (Under 17s) including: one player suspended to 31 May 2022 (which includes the full Junior Representatives season and Country v City representative opportunities)

A second player suspended for four matches; and a third player receiving a two match suspended sentence.

In relation to the Penrith incident, the Penrith Panthers have provided relevant information to the NSW Police for investigation.

The alleged participants are not registered with NSWRL, but the Panthers have identified them and will advise the NSWRL tomorrow on details of how they propose to deal with the matter.

Luke Tucker snatches victory for Sea Eagles

A try two minutes from full-time to winger Luke Tucker has seen the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles snatch a 20-18 victory over the Canberra Raiders in round one of the SG Ball competition today.

The match in Belconnen marked the first clash between the two clubs since the Raiders knocked out the Sea Eagles in the SG Ball Cup preliminary final last season.

The Sea Eagles threatened early in attack down the left side through centre Josh Feledy and five-eighth Latu Fainu, who both have stepped up from last year’s undefeated premiership winning Harold Matthews Cup team.

Manly were held up twice over the line, the first after a barnstorming run from prop Caleb Navale, and the second following a 30 metre run by Feledy after he beat several defenders.

The Raiders opened the scoring through a try to hooker Stan Iongi after he burrowed his way through the defence after Manly conceded a penalty. Half-back Blake Metcalfe converted for a 6-0 lead after 16 minutes.

The Sea Eagles finally crossed the line after giant second-rower Samuela Fainu pounced on a grubber kick from half-back Tylor Bunting to score. Bunting converted for a 6-all scoreline after 23 minutes.

The Raiders went to a 10-6 lead when prop Taulauniuotagaloa Mariota used his strength from 10 metres out to crash through two defenders to score three minutes from half-time. Metcalfe converted for a 12-6 lead at half-time.

A great run down the left hand side saw Feledy beat four defenders to crash his way over in the corner for a 12-10 scoreline after 42 minutes. Bunting failed to convert from the sideline.

A strong run down the left edge by Canberra second-rower Thomas Carey saw five-eighth Calab Edwards race away untouched to score. Metcalfe converted for an 18-10 lead with 20 minutes remaining.

Manly hit back three minutes later when Feledy grabbed his second try off a great break by full-back Charlie Thompson. Bunting converted from the sideline to leave the Sea Eagles trailing 18-16 with 16 minutes remaining.

With the clock counting down, the Sea Eagles chanced their luck inside the final two minutes. Some nice quick hands saw Manly spread the ball right through Eli Sagala and Samuela Fainu for Luke Tucker to dive over in the right corner to score for a 20-18 lead. Bunting missed the conversion.

Sixteen-year-old sensation Latu Fainu signs record-breaking NRL contract

Latu Fainu has just signed a contract that could result in him becoming the highest paid player still to reach NRL level.

Just months after celebrating his 16th birthday, Fainu has inked a mammoth four-year deal with Manly. If he hits the performance targets in his contract extension, the teen pivot will earn a seven-figure amount during that period.

Latu Fainu with parents Lile and Chris at their home on the northern beaches.CREDIT:RENEE NOWYTARGER

Moses Suli made history as the game’s highest-paid teen when he signed a three-year, $1.3 million contract extension in 2017 with Wests Tigers at the age of 18.

The Sun-Herald can reveal Fainu will outstrip that figure if he triggers a series of bonus benchmarks once the deal kicks in next season.

Rival clubs – including Parramatta, the Warriors and the Dolphins – were lining up with their chequebooks in a bid to prise Fainu from the northern beaches. However, the opportunity to secure his financial future and potentially play first-grade alongside his three brothers – including suspended Manly hooker Manase Fainu – proved impossible to turn down.

In a further boost to the club, older brother Samuela Fainu – a 17-year-old forward – also extended his contract until the end of 2024.

Sione Fainu, a promising 20-year-old prop, is on the club’s books as well.

“It’s a dream come true,” Latu the Sixteen-year-old sensation Latu Fainu said.

“It’s great to be able to stay here with my brothers. Hopefully we get the chance to all play in the NRL together. That would mean a lot to the family.”

Good judges believe Fainu has the talent to make it to the very top after the five-eighth was named the player of the series in the Harold Matthews Cup.

The achievement is all the more impressive given he was the standout in the under-17s competition – he had a hand in four of his side’s five tries in the grand final win against Parramatta – when he was still aged 15.

Sixteen-year-old sensation Latu Fainu recently agreed to become an Adidas ambassador, and is believed to be the youngest Australian athlete to do so.

When asked what he planned to do with the windfall coming his way, Latu said: “I want to buy my mum a house.

To be able to do that would be a dream come true. That’s what I want to do.”

Told about Latu’s intentions, his mother Lile – who has eight children – became tearful.

“We are just humbled they think of us,” Lile said.

“Most kids now take off and live their own life. These kids always remember home and we’re just grateful and humbled they think of us.

“We’ve had to go through a lot to make ends meet when they were growing up. While growing up it was just their father [Chris] working and we were living on one income.

They knew the drill; they would ask me for some money and we would have no money, it was ‘Wait until payday’.

“They knew why we had no things, why there was no money to buy a loaf of bread.

The struggle is real and they understand it. I think that’s what made them push more to excel in their careers.

“My husband and I have felt it in each of them.

They looked at how we’ve struggled, so they try to work hard to make their lives more comfortable. I don’t need to be rich, I just want them to enjoy their life.”

Fainu is tipped to push his way into the NRL about the same time Manly captain and playmaker Daly Cherry-Evans finishes his career.

“Latu is one of the game’s brightest stars and there was a lot of interest in him, but he couldn’t be happier to secure his future at the Sea Eagles,” said Mario Tartak of Crown Sports, the manager who also brokered the Suli deal.

“Good judges believe he has the potential to become an absolute superstar.

“All four of the boys feel at home at Manly and, hopefully, they will fulfil their dream of playing in the NRL together.”

The new deal will further shine the spotlight on Latu, but big brother Manase doesn’t think he’s the best footballer in the family.

“I back Sammy [Samuela],” he said. “He’s a big boy; I’d back him to be the best of all of us. He grew up playing at half, he’s got all the skills in the world and he’s got the size, too.”

The family is hopeful it can emulate the feats of the Burgess brothers – Rabbitohs Sam, Tom, Luke and George – who were the last quartet of siblings to take the field at the same time in 2013.

“That would be something very special,” Fainu said.

‘I’ve wasted two years’: Manase Fainu calls for NRL ban to end Manase Fainu has asked the NRL to reconsider his suspension under the no-fault stand-down policy as he braces for his career to remain in limbo for a third season.

Fainu has pleaded not guilty to wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, affray and recklessly causing grievous bodily harm in company in relation to a stabbing incident at a church dance in Wattle Grove in 2019.

COVID-related delays to the court system have resulted in his hearing being pushed back on several occasions and the matter now won’t be heard until the middle of next year.

The NRL will allow Fainu to continue to train with the Sea Eagles until the case is resolved, but the hooker is frustrated some of his best playing years are going to waste.

“I know where they are coming from but, at the same time, they should reconsider it,” Fainu said.

“I’ve wasted two years by not playing. My court case has been pushed back a couple of times now because of COVID. They wouldn’t have known that would come.

“I’m not playing and I’ve lost sponsorships as well. I’m just surrounding myself with positive people. Hopefully I can get back on the field.”

The NRL’s stand-down rule came under renewed scrutiny when two juries failed to reach a verdict in Jack de Belin’s two trials on charges of sexual assault.

The former NSW lock was sidelined for two-and-a-half years before the Director of Public Prosecutions dropped the charges.

“We appreciate that the NRL has a duty to protect the image of the game and that’s why the no-fault stand-down rule was brought in,” Fainu’s manager Tartak said.

“Given Manase has pleaded not guilty, we respectfully ask that the NRL reconsider its stance.”

There has been another impediment to Fainu’s immediate return. The hooker has had ongoing complications with a shoulder injury that will require further surgeries.

“I’ve got to go in for another op at the end of the month,” he said. “Then two weeks after that I’ve got to get another one for the front of my shoulder, so it’s a four-week process to do this.”

Fainu said he was enjoying watching his talented siblings rise through the ranks while sidelined.

“I’m proud of them,” he said. “When I was their age, I wasn’t talked about that much. They are far ahead of me. I’m not even the best in the family and I made it, so fingers crossed that they follow the same path and all have a crack at a [NRL] debut.”
