Dolphins fire to beat Blackhawks in Cyril Connell Cup big dance

Redcliffe Dolphins came out firing in the Cyril Connell Cup grand final against Townsville Blackhawks and kept firing until the final siren to claim the 24-10 win.

Dolphins halfback Noah Fien was first to cross for the Dolphins, followed by Amare

Amare Wynyard and Nate Berrigan in the first half, to take them into half-time 16-0 up.

The Blackhawks were first to strike in the second half through second rower Taakoi Benioni, then centre Cohen Dittman scored a runaway try to close the gap that bit further as the Blackhawks fought to stay in the game.

But Dolphins lock and player of the match Charlie Dickson sealed the deal for the Dolphins when he crossed for four points at the 52-minute mark.

Dolphins coach Larry Dickson – dad to Charlie – said he was proud of every single player in his side.

“It’s hard to put into words how I feel… geez they worked hard,” Dickson said.

“Our aim today was to be the best version of ourselves… we just wanted to do what we do well and we tried to stick to that.

“How torrid our pre-season was, and let’s not forget after Round 3 we were coming dead last.

The heat and the flack we copped was pretty immense, so everyone needs to celebrate these guys for what they’ve done and the work that they’ve put in to get here. Their response has been phenomenal.”

Noting it was no mean feat to win five games on the trot to make the grand final, Dickson said the boys simply worked hard to get the job done.

“It’s no mean feat but we did the work,” Dickson said.

“I know there was panic stations at the start when we drew one and lost one, but us coaching staff knew the work that we’d done… we just needed to trust it would come to the forefront with the boys.”

Dickson said his side executed everything they had been working on in training and it showed.

“There was a moment towards at the end before we scored that last try and kicked that penalty where we just defended our line for three sets and forced an error.

That’s the stuff we worked on the whole pre-season and that’s the epitome of what we worked for,” Dickson said.

“For it to come out today, it shows these young fellas, how hard they worked, they’ll get the rewards.

“All of them put in the work. All of them.. the whole team, the whole squad, the coaching staff. When you win a grand final it’s never off the back of one person, it’s off the back of everyone.

“I put a lot of heat on my spine about three of four weeks ago and I think their response to that has been excellent.”

Dickson was chuffed to see Charlie get player of the match.

“Charlie is just going to give you what Charlie gives you… he’s just a competitor… he’s not the biggest fella but he just wants to compete on everything,” Dickson said.

“Would’ve loved to play beside him.”

Dickson added the Blackhawks, coached by Nathan Norford, were tough competitors and they should be proud of their performance.

“For them to travel down here and their response… we got out to 16-nil and they came out after half-time and really stuck it to us so full credit to those guys,” Dickson said.

“Very well coached. Their coach, coaching staff and club really got behind them as a group and they did excellent today.”

QRL Junior statewide competitions Round 1

Junior statewide competitions are all set to kick off on Saturday for season 2024.

With the newly-introduced Harvey Norman Under 17s and the new-look Mal Meninga Cup, Harvey Norman Under 19 and Cyril Connell Cup, the year ahead is set to be a massive one for up-and-comers of Queensland rugby league.

Here’s how they shape up in Round 1.

Mal Meninga Cup

Like the first day of school, Round 1 can throw up more questions than it provides answers. And, just like school, there can be plenty of unknowns and nerves.

The Redcliffe Dolphins will close out the first week of competition when they take on traditional rivals the Brisbane Tigers on Sunday.

Last year’s Scott Tronc is back at the helm in 2024 but knows that 2023 doesn’t mean too much anymore and a new group of Dolphins are ready to tackle the now under 19 competition.

“We will have about eight players from last season again,” Tronc said of the reigning premiers.

“I am all about moving those players up and getting them ready for the next challenge.

“We are about working hard and our values and that’s all we can control.

“I am looking forward to Tevita Naufahu our centre and (lock) Lewis Symonds as well.”

On the other side of halfway will be the Brisbane Tigers.

The Tigers didn’t have the best year in the Mal Meninga Cup in 2023 and coach Ben Weston will be looking to right some wrongs.

“I sat down and we had a real think about what has not worked for the Tigers and I am new to the club, so I came with fresh eyes,” Weston said.

“We have identified a few things we need to change and we have gone about changing that now.

“Redcliffe in Round 1 is a great challenge. They are the premiers and that’s not by accident – that is because they’re the best.

“The key to us being competitive is our defence. We have to defend well, especially under pressure.

“We played Dolphins in a trial game last week so we had a bit of a look at them but every coach will say the same thing that Round 1 is about you and making sure you have things in order.”

Harvey Norman Under 19

Burleigh Bears and Souths Logan Magpies on Saturday at Logan Metro Sports Complex will headline the opening round of the Harvey Norman Under 19 competition.

Souths Logan coach Warren Bernardin is ready for what the season brings and thinks the Magpies have the talent to improve on their 12th-place finish in 2023 and play in this year’s finals – a first for the Harvey Norman Under 19 competition.

Bernardin wants to see effort and attitude and thinks he will get both from his captain.

“Our No.10 Ma’u Halatoa has come from the Wests Tigers and she has been fantastic in the off-season,” he said.

“She’s our captain and she will lead those little efforts that we have been talking about.

“That’s what I want to get right – effort and attitude.”

The Bears had five members play in last year’s BMD Premiership final and they’re ready to bring that experience back to the Under 19s.

Bears coach Spencer Taplin is ready for the season to start.

“This year we are a very young and energetic side,” Taplin said.

“The energy and attitude toward our current challenges has been so far okay.

“I’m looking forward to seeing how they develop over the season.

“We have our Titans academy girls just coming off their program, who got to play against the Newcastle Knights’ girls not long ago.”

Cyril Connell Cup

The Cyril Connell Cup will start at 1pm on Saturday with the Wynnum Manly Seagulls and Tweed Seagulls engaging in aerial warfare.

The Tweed Seagulls weren’t satisfied with their season in 2023 and the steep learning curve of a statewide competition took some getting used to.

Eleven players will return for 2024 and coach Neil Richards can’t wait for the weekend’s football.

“We have a good mix of experienced 17-year-olds who will feature in the competition for a second year running,” Richards said.

“Along with some talented 16-year-olds from the local competition and signings from local NRL clubs, this provides us with a lot of depth across the park.”

Wynnum Manly were also reflecting on their last season and weren’t happy with sixth spot. Change is in the air for the Seagulls and it started in November at training.

Seagulls coach Blake Trace said the team has bought into the club culture.

“We have put an emphasis around a team-first mentality and they have been working hard to grow and develop as a squad,” he said.

The Seagulls are after a fast start in 2024 and know you don’t have time to make up ground.

“Every game is different but it’s important to start the season well.

“It’s a short competition, so every game counts.”

Harvey Norman Under 17

The opening round of the short Harvey Norman Under 17 season will bring the Dolphins and Tigers to Kayo Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Tigers coach Kim Bray is excited for what lies ahead for the squad.

“We will be a very competitive team with great strength all over the park,’’ Bray said.

“The key to having success this season will be to play to our strengths and keep doing the little things.’’

Dolphins coach Ana Fotu meanwhile has said she wants her team to show their best qualities starting with Round 1.

“Effort, attitude and energy will always be our main focus in being competitive in games,’’ she said.

“Like they say – hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.’’

The Dolphins are excited about lock forward Keira Rangi, who made the Under 16 Queensland schoolgirls team in 2023.

Round 1 kicks off tomorrow for junior statewide competitions, with southeast clubs in action for the Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup, Harvey Norman Under 19s and Cyril Connell Challenge.

Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup kicks off this week and where else would you start but with the premiers, Souths Logan Magpies, coming up against the Redcliffe Dolphins at Kayo Stadium.

It will be a hot Saturday on and off the field as Souths begin the trek back to the top of the mountain but this time with a new line up and new coach.

It’s been 293 days since Jye Gray and Blake Mozer manufactured a win over the Townsville Blackhawks on the Sunshine Coast to clinch the premiership for the Magpies.

New Souths Logan coach Ben Trim is ready for the challenge of a new season.

“Mal Meninga throws up lots of challengers, it’s a short competition so you have to be ready Round 1,” Trim said.

“We may have won the competition last season but we are a new team and new players and new coach too.”

When Souths Logan are looking to score tries or bring the ball back with venom it will be Israel Leota they look to.

“I am really looking forward to seeing Israel Leota… it’s his second year of Meninga and he is looking like he is ready for a big year on the back of that trial game for the Broncos,” Trim said.

“You need a smart hooker and we have one in Jacob Tinsley, so he will play a big role for us this season too.”

Leota: ‘It would mean to world to me and my family to play for Queensland’

But even with the talent he has in his side, Trim knows what’s waiting for him at Kayo Stadium this Saturday.

“The Redcliffe middles are terrific – that is their strength and I think they have the best middle third,” Trim said.

“Michael Waqa is sensational.

“It’s going to be hot and with the two extra interchanges I think that might help the bigger teams.”

Meanwhile Dolphins coach Scott Tronc knows he’s got a job on his hands in 2023.

“Mal Meninga Cup is a 50-metre sprint. You don’t have time to start slowly or come home late,” Tronc said.

“For a lot of guys this is their first introduction to senior football… getting their preparation right, their hydration and diet.

“I want to see our players stick to a plan… know the plan and stick to it. Show they can follow the map.”

Tronc is excited about two Dolphins that might be jumping waves by the end of the Mal Meninga season.

“We have two players in Michael Waqa and John Paul Donevski who have done the pre-season with the NRL squad so they can see the top of the mountain … it’s still the same hard climb but they can see it,” Tronc said.

“They are both going to be good for us this year, as a middle forward and a fullback.”

In other games this round, Wynnum Manly will play host to Burleigh at 3.15pm at John Frederick Park, Capalaba, while Norths Devils will take on Brisbane Tigers from 2.10pm at Bishop Park.

Harvey Norman Under 19s

Round 1 of the Harvey Norman Under 19s competition will see three games be played on Saturday, finishing with a clash between the Burleigh Bears and Wynnum Manly Seagulls.

When the Bears and Seagulls met last season, it was the Bears who walked away victorious, 24-18.

A big part of that was hooker Lily-Rose Kolc, who will be back again for the Bears.

Bella Thompson, the Bears fullback, will be the vocal point of everything Burleigh do on Saturday and they will be looking for her to break open the Seagulls’ defence.

“Bella is a real player, she’s going to turn some heads this season,” Taplin said.

“I think off the bench Nadia Windleborn will have an impact and of course Lily-Rose Kolc.”

It’s been a disrupted start to the season for the Bears with new coach Spencer Taplin barely having time to check his pigeon hole.

“You’re right it’s been disrupted… I have only been involved two weeks but we are ready to go,” Taplin said.

“They’re such a great group, so coachable and willing to learn.

“They take notes when I talk and retain everything and want to get better. There’s not much more a coach can ask.

“I want to see connection… connect as a team and as a unit.”

On the opposite side of the match-up, if you said Wynnum Manly coach Steve Casey was excited for the start of the season it would be a massive understatement. In 2023, Wynnum Manly are ready.

“We are preparing to play the best team in the competition. The Bears are the benchmark,” Casey said.

“I am so excited about the season and what our forwards and outside backs can do. The players in this age group are just amazing. They’re genuine rugby league stars and they will play NRLW.

“It’s so exciting what is happening.

“Defence is our focus, that’s what I want to see. If you don’t do that well you will always struggle.”

In other games for Round 1 Redcliffe will host Souths Logan from 11.20am at Kayo Stadium while Norths and Brisbane Tigers will meet at 3.40pm at Bishop Park.

Round 1 of the Cyril Connell Challenge will see Bishop Park play host to two Brisbane clubs that ooze tradition.

Norths Devils and Brisbane Tigers have been rocking each other’s worlds for 90 years and on Saturday the youngest Devils and Tigers get to have their turn.

Cyril Connell played 21 games for Queensland and two games for Australia, but it was off the field that the former maths teacher at Brisbane State High and director of secondary education for Queensland excelled.

Connell was able to turn to his network of contacts, his driving skills and fondness for pie eating to successfully scan Queensland in search of talent.

Finding rising stars for the Brisbane Broncos for 19 years. There wasn’t a boy in rugby league across the state that didn’t know his name.

The Tigers have several players that Connell would have been keeping a close eye on – Max Blanch is the Tigers captain and played one game last season.

He will be at lock.

Meanwhile Frank Howarth will be in the second row for the Tigers and will provide mobile physicality with front rower Kobi Floro set to be a 100kg wrecking ball.

Coach Lote Tuqiri is in his second year of coaching the Tigers and excited for what the season could bring.

“I think I have improved a lot around communication and my message to the players, making it very clear and concise,” Tuqiri said.

“Saturday will be about a few things, I think we are fit so the heat won’t be a problem but I just want us to compete in a smart way.

“I want to see Raymond Nagas in the clear. He has flown under the radar but I think he could score some tries for us but we need to give him the room to do that too.”

Devils coach Shannon Tupara is a realist and ready for what lies ahead this season.

“It’s such a quick competition that we will be looking to start sharp.

Trials don’t mean too much but our message has been improvement every week,” Tupara said.

“I think we can gel quickly and be a cohesive group. You can’t afford to ease into the season when it’s only six weeks.

“We will be about being a team that competes and plays a fast style of football.”

Elsewhere, Redcliffe and Souths Logan will kick off the Round 1 action at 10am when they clash at Kayo Stadium.

Wynnum Manly and Burleigh will meet at 2pm at John Frederick Park, Capalaba.

Blackhawks looking to fire against visiting Capras

Townsville Blackhawks have been performing well in the Cyril Connell Challenge.

With two wins so far and they will be looking to keep that run going this week against Central Queensland Capras.

The Blackhawks are the home side this weekend and come into the match following a 28-10 win over Mackay Cutters in their last game.

Their impressive ball control helped them to an 18-0 half-time lead that the Cutters couldn’t get back.

Townville coach Nathan Norford was a happy coach following last weekend’s game, but identified areas for his players to improve on coming into Round 4.

“We went through our sets at training and looked at what went wrong, we didn’t complete seven in a row and that makes it very hard,” Norford said.

“There was a period in the rain that we just didn’t adapt to or play well.”

The Blackhawks had 60 per cent of the ball, but their completion rate will be something that needs attention this week as they also only completed 56 per cent of their sets.

However, their blistering attack got them over the line, with 39 tackle breaks and six line breaks leading to six tries.

Keelin Hookey did plenty of damage to the Cutters and the Capras will need to keep a close eye on the young winger.

Hookey scored two tries and made three-line breaks.

“Keelin is a speedster, he scored an intercept and a sneaky little short-side try, he went really well. If he gets in the clear not too many will catch him,” Norford said.

When the Cutters came back and scored two quick tries, it was the classy Townsville half Kyan Purdy that showed his composure and steadied the Blackhawks.

“The Capras are a quality team and that first score they had against them in round one doesn’t indicate the team we expect to play this week,” Norford said.

“They were back to themselves last week and they have strength across the field.”

Elsewhere in the round, the action will kick-off on Saturday when Tweed Seagulls host Brisbane Tigers.

The Seagulls had a tough 40-0 loss in Round 2 and then had a week off to work on their game so are bound to bounce back this week against the Tigers.

The visitors beat the Devils two weeks ago and will be trying to recapture that form again.

Home side Mackay Cutters will be after a better start this week against Northern Pride, as in their last match against Townsville, three first half tries saw them fall too far behind to peg back the deficient despite scoring two quick tries.

Winger Logan Atkinson was a light on the hill for Mackay, the Cutters lost three middle players and the winger took on plenty of work.

The Pride were well in the game against the Capras at 12-6 at half-time in their last match, but it was in the second half were things got shaky.

George Palipe kept trucking it forward for the Pride from the wing and ended the game with 172 metres.

Redcliffe Dolphins had the bye last weekend, while their opposition this weekend Souths Logan Magpies had a tight game, overcoming Wynnum Manly Seagulls by two points.

The match between Redcliffe and the Magpies should be a display of skill.

Duquan Talaepa was a tackling weapon for the Magpies and the Dolphins will need to be on the lookout.

Souths front row of Fa’apale Feaunati and Dirhys Sefo carried the load of the Magpies, while hooker Cory Pearse was tremendous in the win.

Sunshine Coast Falcons lost to Ipswich Jets last weekend and and this week they will again be hosting, this time taking on Western Clydesdales.

The Falcons started enthusiastically against the Jets, but they couldn’t control the ball, despite going try-for-try with Ipswich.

Zac Garton was again great for the Falcons with 144 metres and wasn’t done there, completing 25 tackles as well.

The Clydesdales beat the Wide Bay Bulls 20-12 and did it with very little ball.

When they did have the ball, it was Paddy Muir making sure they used it. The middle forward was outstanding.

Ipswich Jets must be close to the form team of the Cyril Connell Challenge with two wins in a row and will be keen to go for three against Wide Bay Bulls this weekend.

Round 4 – Saturday 19th March @ 4:20pm
Venue : North Ipswich Reserve, Ipswich

The Jets ran hard last round and broke 51 tackles which led to three tries, two from prop David Leota.

The powerful Jet was a force that couldn’t be stopped.

Leota was backed up by Isaac Togia who made 150 metres and 27 tackles.

The Jets had performers all over the field including Harlyn Westlake at fullback who returned the ball and got the Jets sets started in great position.

Cody Gillespie, who closed down anything the Falcons had cooking, and Lachlan Coburn, would have slept well after his defence at lock.

The Bulls came away from Maryborough with a 20-12 loss to the Clydesdales.

Connell’s legacy continues as new season kicks off

The Cyril Connell Challenge will begin this weekend and the legacy of the man the competition is named after will be fondly remembered by Brisbane Tigers coach Lote Tuqiri.

Cyril Connell played 21 games for Queensland and two games for Australia, but it was off the field that the former maths teacher at Brisbane State High and director of secondary education for Queensland excelled.

Connell was able to turn to his network of contacts, his driving skills and fondness for pie eating to successfully scan Queensland in search of talent.

Finding rising stars for the Brisbane Broncos for 19 years. There wasn’t a league playing boy in the state that didn’t know his name, including former Bronco Tuqiri.

On Saturday, two traditional foes will resume hostilities with the Tigers facing off against the Redcliffe Dolphins.

Round 1: Dolphins v Tigers – Saturday 26th February, 12:00pm @ Moreton Daily Stadium

“Cyril Connell and Phil Hall brought me to the Broncos, I am very proud to be involved with the competition,” Tuqiri said of coaching in the Cyril Connell Challenge.

“I would like to think that Cyril will be looking down on Saturday doing his crossword and eating a pie.

“I can’t wait to start coaching. I am very excited for the players. “We have done the hard work and played some trials and now we have to hit the ground running and gain momentum.

“I am ready to see Markatato Nosa, our half; I think he’s shown in the trial games that he’s ready to have big season. “I want to see minimal errors and control the ruck.”

Redcliffe coach Chris Little is ready to face another Cyril Connell Challenge season with the club, having guided the Dolphins to an undefeated season last year.

“This season, we have great structures and system in place that are flowing down from the Hostplus Cup to our Cyril Connell side and that’s been a real positive,” Little said.

“Wayne Bennett (The Dolphins NRL coach) has been hands-on and involved and that’s been great.

“Scott Murray, the Hostplus Cup coach, has been involved, so every team is on the same page.”

With plenty of young talent in his side, Little was counting on players with more experience to share their knowledge with the rest of the team.

“I am looking forward to watching Prestyn Laine-Sietu and Tauave Leofa; both are players are in their second year of Cyril Connell.

So they can build on last season and will be better for their second year,” Little said.

Following a fantastic day of selection trials on the weekend the 2022 Mackay Cutters train-on squads have been named for the Under 16’s Cyril Connell Cup and Under 18’s Mal Meninga Cup competitions.

The coaching staff of both squads would like to thank all participants for their efforts and the manner in which the trials were conducted.

Lote Tuqiri 2022 Tigers 2022 Cyril Connell coachThe Suzuki Brisbane Tigers are delighted to confirm the appointment of Lote Tuqiri in the 2022 U16’s Cyril Connell Head Coach role.

Tuqiri, a dual code Australian representative, Queensland Maroon and two-time NRL premiership winner has enjoyed giving back to the game which gave him so much.

“I came into the coaching arena just wanting to help out in my son Samson’s Easts Juniors under 13s team back in 2018,” said Tuqiri.

“I have continued coaching that side for the past few seasons, and it made me really enjoy the coaching aspect as to playing.

“I’m lucky enough to land this gig with the Brisbane Tigers. There’s an infinity brand with the Tigers given my last three years with Easts Juniors.

“It’s an honour for me to be given the opportunity to go a bit higher and coach in a competition where it allows athletes to go further,” he added.

Brisbane Tigers CEO, Brian Torpy, said he couldn’t be happier to have Tuqiri join the coaching staff.

“We are fortunate to have a coach with Lote’s experience and stature in our game to develop, lead and mentor the club’s next generation of Tigers players.

“I have no doubt our 2022 Cyril Connell squad will become better players as a result of playing under Lote,” he added.
