Another trademark Erindale College fightback fell agonisingly short as Hills Sports’ dominant first half proved the difference in the first-ever NRL Schoolgirls grand final. Relive all the action.

Hills Sports High School have claimed the inaugural NRL Schoolgirls Cup after hard fought win over Erindale College at Campbelltown Stadium on Wednesday.

Hills will now go on to face the winner of the Queensland competition in the national final on September 13 at Netstrata Jubilee Oval.

Erindale put the pressure to Hills early on, forcing mistakes to keep hold of the ball, but they couldn’t cross for the first try.

That came for Hills with Esther Tuipulotu regathering a kick and planting the ball amid multiple Erindale defenders in the corner.

It didn’t take them long to add to their advantage, along the other wing this time, as Manua Moleka found some space.

Mya McGlynn sparked an Erindale try late in the half, with Ella Kelly benefiting to score a try right in the corner.

Tuipulotu then scored her second try just before the break to give Hills a 14-4 halftime lead.

Hills came out of the sheds firing, and it took just a few minutes for Moleka to score her second try.

Erindale tried to respond quickly, but a strong Hills defence kept them out until Kelly managed to find some space again, dodging past Hills to plant her second.

Uta Uatisone Poka added another try soon after as the travelling Erindale fans got the whiff of an upset.

But despite the late comeback, Erindale just couldn’t match Hills with the final score 20-14.

Erindale College will head into the NRL Schoolgirls grand final on Wednesday as the ultimate underdog when they face off against the undefeated Hills Sports High School.

But it is not going to stop the girls from the nation’s capital from believing.

The Canberra-based side barely scraped through to the semifinals, only picking up one win in the pool stage over Matraville Sports High School and narrowly beating out Illawarra Sports on points difference to make the knockout stages.

No one expected Erindale to make it to the grand final, but the team turned it up a notch in the semis, upsetting Bass 12-8 to book their place in Wednesday’s decider.

“I’m so ecstatic for the girls,” Erindale coach Ashley Barnes said of the shock win.

“Obviously we came in as massive underdogs and to turn up and play like that, the girls should be very proud and the school is very proud of them.”

Despite Erindale’s underdog status, coach Barnes said he has complete belief in his team to pull off another upset and take out the title.

“We’ve just got to make sure that we … continue to work,” he said.

“A lot of these girls haven’t been playing rugby league for a long time, some only six months to a year, so it’s still all so new to them.

“We’ll be going home and watching the footage (from the semi-finals), watching Hills and working on the areas we think need improving.”

Hills Sports High have been the standouts of the inaugural NRL Schoolgirls Cup competition, coming through the pool stages undefeated.

The semi-final win over Westfields Sports High showcased the side’s never-say-die attitude, coming back from a 6-4 halftime deficit to take out the match 18-12.

“We dug deep when we were 4-6 down after the first half and we came back, it was just crazy,” Hills co-captain Olivia Vaalele said after the match.

While they might enter the grand final as the favourites, Vaalele said the side neded to have an honest appraisal of their semi-final performance with several areas that need to be worked on.

“We’ll really need to work on our penalties, just staying onside and keeping everything together,” she said.

“I’m definitely nervous for the grand final, but I think with the support we have we can put in a good performance.”

While Westfields were class under pressure, they will have to be at their very best in the final if Patties Blacktown produce a repeat of their NRL Schoolboys Cup semi masterpiece. Relive the action.

Westfields held off a tenacious challenge from Erindale to set up a Peter Mulholland Cup grand final showdown with Patrician Brothers Blacktown next Wednesday.

Lachlan Galvin was one of the stars of the show, scoring a try and contributing to multiple others to help his side to come from behind to beat the Canberra-based school 22-16 at Campbelltown Stadium.

It was the second year in a row Erindale have gone out at ther semifinal stage.

Westfields’ Roy Quiroz-Mapusa said getting to the grand final is an incredible feeling.

“What an adrenaline rush,” he said.

“We just had to keep believing in each other.

“There’s a reason Erindale got to the finals, but I had full confidence in the boys.”

Erindale gained the advantage early, with Olli Bolatagici benefiting from a Jonah Anderson kick to claim the first try.

Australian Schoolboy Xavier Cacciotti doubled the advantage for Erindale soon after, and a perfect two from two from Sam Gash gave the Canberra side a solid 12-0 lead early on.

Westfields coach Troy Weeden admitted the two early tries was concerning, but the boys didn’t let it impact their confidence.

“To go 12-0 down made me nervous,” Weeden said.

“Our mentality changed after that, we know we can score points when we are in the area, but we just weren’t there enough.”

Galvin was the first to reduce the deficit with a try followed by Brycen Anae Roberts and Sosefo Finau in quick succession to hand Westfields a 16-12 lead heading into the break.

Westfields made it four unanswered tries 10 minutes into the second half as Heith Pritchard powered through from dummy half for the try. A third successful conversion for Quiroz-Mapusua put the side 10 points in front.

Erindale’s Bolatagici was able to claw back some points off the back of an impressive run from Mathias Tomuli-Ah-Koui, but an unsuccessful conversion from Gash kept Erindale just out of reach.

The pro-Erindale crowd were fired up and a sin-bin for Westfields Markuzz Ofanoa only made them louder.

But Westfields held their nerve.

Super Patties Blacktown turn in semifinal special

Patrician Brothers Blacktown have shocked the NRL Schoolboys competition by demolishing the previously undefeated St Dominic’s 32-0 to secure a spot in next week’s grand final.

Fullback Wilson De Courcey called the result and performance ‘amazing’.

“Just crazy,” he said.

“I wasn’t expecting that scoreline, I thought it would be a closer game.

“But we’ve been aiming for this since the start of the season and to get this result is amazing.”

The opening few minutes were very physical with neither side giving an inch.

Marcellus Iakopo got the scoring underway early, dodging past St Dom’s defence before Thomas Epere doubled the lead soon after, following a kick from De Courcey.

St Dom’s were plagued by errors close to the line and the Pats defence was unyielding.

Australian Schoolboy De Courcey grabbed a try of his own just before halftime to extend the lead to 18-0 and it was a long way back for St Dom’s.

St Dom’s were gifted a much-needed advantage midway through the second half when Patties player Langa Tokuafu was sent to the sin-bin for a late tackle.

De Courcey said going a man down was frustrating.

“It’s little things like that, discipline, that we really need to sort out,” De Courcey said.

“If it was a closer game, that could have really affected us.”

St Dom’s though couldn’t break through. The closest they got was when a powerful charge from Jack Attard was thwarted by the defence right on the line.

Even down a player, Patties were unstoppable.

A brilliant run from Jaxon Edgar was rewarded as Jack Nicholas found the tryline, and co-captain Finau Latu added a second try in as many minutes to put St Dom’s out of their misery.

Patties’ confidence only grew from there as Nicholas picked up his second try of the match for a stunning 32-0 lead.

PREVIEW

The grand finalists from 2022 may be gone, but there is certainly no doubting the quality of this year’s Peter Mulholland Cup final four.

Patties Fairfield went out in the group stages while Hills were quarterfinal victims, but in Westfields Sports, Erindale College, St Dominic’s and Patrician Brothers Blacktown, there are four teams in peak form and all are capable of winning the title on their best day.

And the semifinal draw only adds to the intrigue.

Westfields boast a four-game unbeaten run as they prepare for a match-up with Erindale.

Winger Will Craig has been one of the stars of the show, scoring 10 tries in those four games.

“He’s just so strong,” coach Troy Weeden said after Westfields’ 52-6 quarterfinal demolition of All Saints Maitland.

“He’s good at the art, everything he does is just superb and he gets us out of a lot of trouble.”

Australian schoolboy Lachlan Galvin has also been pivotal to Westfields’ success this year and Weeden praised the No.6’s ability to ‘always scoring tries, or contribute to them.’

COUNTRY STANDOUT READY TO BEAT WESTFIELDS TO DOUBLE PUNCH

While heading into the semifinals with plenty of momentum, Weedon conceded there were a few areas he wanted his team to pick up in.

“We need to fix our possession with the ball and control overall,” he said.

“As long as they put on a good performance and look after themselves we’ll be in with a shot.”

RELIVE ALL THE QUARTERFINAL ACTION HERE

Erindale’s quarterfinal clash against Endeavour Sports High School was ‘a bit of a weird game’, according to coach Ashley Barnes.

They eventually pulled off a 28-24 golden point win to reach the semifinals for the second year in a row. Last year they were knocked out in a thriller by Hills.

Barnes said he’s not underestimating the challenge Westfields will pose.

“If we’re as ill disciplined as we were against Endeavour, we’re going to have a really tough game,” Barnes said.

“They’re a powerful side with some really good players there, so we’ll really need to tidy up our game.

“I think if we just focus on us we’ll be really competitive.”

Jack Nicholas scored four tries in the quarterfinals.

In the other game, Patrician Brothers Blacktown have suddenly found a winning formula and head into their clash with St Dominic’s College feeling good about their prospects.

Their 64-6 win over Victorian University Secondary College in the quarterfinals featured an incredible 12 tries, four of which came from Jack Nicholas.

Nicholas said the result was a testament to how well the team are working together now after they fixed the mistakes that plagued them throughout the competition.

“We’re spreading the ball really well, our defence is really good,” Nicholas said after the quarterfinal win.

“Those four tries came from my teammates, we were just strong as a team and hopefully that takes us all the way.”

With St Dom’s going into the clash without yet losing a match in the competition, Nicholas said it’ll be a really tough battle.

“It’ll be a hard game, they’re a good team,” he said.

“It’s always tough when we play Dom’s but we’ll get back to training, work hard and give it a good crack.”

St Doms have been impressive form all year.

St Dom’s struggled with discipline issues during their 26-18 win over Hills Sports, letting in three tries in the second half and having Jack Ewer sent to the sin bin for a high tackle after looking comfortable in the opening half.

“We just switched off,” coach Kyle Churchill said.

“We weren’t cohesive as a group both in defence and in attack, and it took its toll.”

Sydney East rugby league held their schoolboy trials today at Heffron Park, Maroubra

A total of 215 studdents turned up for today’s trails with 105 trying out for Opens selection and 115 for the under 15s selection.

The next step for these talents young men is to represent Sydney Red in the NSWCHS State trials.

NSWCHS State trials will be again held at Collegians Stadium, Figtree NSW with the ultimate goals of representing Australia in the Australian Schoolboys teams. Friday 21 st May to Wednesday 24 th May 2023

Thomas is a driven athlete who has shown determination and success in Rugby League throughout his time at school.

In 2022 Thomas was chosen as a member of the NSWCCC Opens Rugby League team where his individual performance in this side was recognised by selection in the 2022 Australian Schoolboys.

Thomas’ abilities have also been recognised previously, with selection in 2021 All Schools Merit Team.

Thomas is a valued member of his school community, where he was elected as a College Leader in 2022.

He has fulfilled roles at College Mass, College Assemblies and mentoring. Thomas’ applications to his studies have been commendable, maintaining top ranks in each of his courses and going on to be selected in the Peter Mulholland Cup Academic High Achievers list.

Thomas is a most worthy recipient of this 2022 NSWCCC Blue Award for Rugby League.

Caitlyn is a very talented sports person, displaying her skills in a variety of sporting contexts.

She has a great vision, speed and reads the game at the highest level.

She has excelled in Rugby League this year, being dominant on the field. She leads by example on and off the field.

She is a highly skilled five-eight with outstanding game management skills.

She is balanced and poised in attack and is a strong defender.

Caitlyn proved to be an excellent leader on and off the field and was named as a member of the team’s leadership group.

In this role, Caitlyn implemented team building activities and captained the team against CIS.

Caitlyn showed her immense talent when leading the team around the field in the final of the Rugby League Championship against CHS and as recognition of her outstanding performance was named CCC player of the match.

It has been in the sport of Rugby League where her skill and leadership qualities have resulted in success, and she has maintained this level of commitment to all sporting activities throughout 2022.

Caitlyn is a most worthy recipient of this 2022 NSWCCC Blue Award for Rugby League.

Joash Papalii

Joash is a driven athlete who has shown determination and success in Rugby League throughout his time at school.

In 2022 Joash was chosen as a member of the NSWCCC Opens Rugby League team.

His individual performance in this side was recognised by selection in the 2022 Australian Schoolboys.

Joash’s abilities in Rugby League have also been recognised previously with selection in 2019 U/15 NSW CCC side, as well as the Australian Schoolboys U/15 Merit Team.

Joash is humble and very focused, his passion for Rugby League has been his priority, which is reflected by his representative honours.

He has also developed a positive energy in the learning environment and was recently nominated for the NSW Training Awards for School based traineeships. (SVAT).

Bronte Wilson

Bronte is a talented, dedicated, and skilful Rugby League player.

She is a strong defender and her ball playing skills are outstanding. She has a high work rate and proves to be an outstanding leader on and off the field.

Bronte was part of the leadership team and captained the team against CHS.

She has also Excelled in Rugby League where she was selected for the dominant Southern Country team and went on to be successful in making the NSWCCC Girls 16 Years and Under Rugby League team.

Bronte has excelled in representative sport at the College this year. She represented the College in athletics, Oz tag, Rugby League, Rugby Union, and Touch Football.

Bronte has been an active member of the College community assisting younger students in transitioning to High School as a peer support leader.

Bronte is a most worthy recipient of this 2022 NSWCCC Blue Award for Rugby League.

Young Sharks on show at Lisa Fiaola Cup

In what was the first elite level hit out for most of the squad, the Sharks under-17 Lisa Fiaola Cup team handed in some eye-catching performances in the round robin event held yesterday at Tuggerah on the NSW Central Coast.

Under the guidance of coaches Maddie Studdon and Corban Baxter, two former Jillaroos, NSW Origin representatives and Sharks Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership players.

The next crop of female rugby league talent was on show in four matches across the day, with encouraging results.

The young Sharks played out a four-all draw with the Wests Tigers in their opening match, before recording an impressive three tries to two victory over the Newcastle Knights in their second game.

Hard-fought losses to the Bulldogs (16-12) and Victoria (16-8) followed, but the girls were far from discouraged with a number of the senior girls in the 22-player squad expected to push up into the Sharks under-19 Tarsha Gale Cup team ahead of the 2023 season.

Talented dummy half Stephanie Faulkner managed to score a try in each of the four matches, however she was ably supported by many in the Sharks team.

With the Lisa Fiaola Cup the start of a pathway at the club which progresses through the Tarsha Gale, Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership and then the NRLW, with the Sharks having been granted a license to compete in the elite level competition from 2023.
