NRL Schoolgirls Cup live stream: Mabel Park State High v Hills Sports High, national final

Experience reigned supreme to deliver Mabel Park State High a historic result in the inaugural NRL National Schoolgirls Cup final against Hills Sports High.

Mabel Park have claimed the inaugural NRL Schoolgirls Cup with a 26-8 win over NSW champions Hills Sports High School at Allianz Stadium on Wednesday.

Winning captain Malaela Su’a was on the verge of tears after collecting the trophy and said the feeling is ‘incredible’.

“There are no words,” Su’a said.

“I feel like I’m on fire right now, we made history and it just feels incredible.”

Su’a warned rivals that the title was only the beginning for Mabel Park.

“It’s really great that this competition exists for our young girls looking up at us,” she said.

“They’ll know they can chase the dream and anything is possible.”

Hills were looking the stronger side in the opening 10 minutes, but it was Mabel Park who struck first as Alice Shannon powered through to open the scoring.

Lily Vaitolo doubled the advantage for the Queensland side just minutes later before a stunning try from fullback Nazlyn Waaka-Rhind, whose fantastic footwork enabled her to dodge past the Hills defence, gave Mabel Park a solid 14-0 advantage at halftime.

There was a significant delay just before the break to allow Mable Park’s Nikolina Fangupo to be wheelchaired off the field following a hard tackle, but the Queenslander was able to return to the field for the second half.

Hills finally struck back 10 minutes into the second half with Manua Maleka scoring before Mabel Park scored one of the strangest tries seen all year, capitalising on a mistake from Hills to push the advantage out to 16 points.

Hills got their second and tried to mount a comeback with minutes remaining, but Mabel Park quickly squashed any hope with a final converted try.

It is a moment that has been a long-time coming for the girls of Mabel Park.

The school has been at the forefront of women’s rugby league for almost half a decade, building a schoolgirls program before their boys back in 2015.

The program already has a proven track record of producing NRLW talent, and the trophy cabinet is already overflowing with Karyn Murphy Cup titles.

But a chance to be crowned inaugural champions is an opportunity the proud school will not want to pass up.

“The opportunity to represent our school on the biggest stage means the world to these girls and our coaching staff,” Mabel Park coach Chace Carey said.

“Having worked alongside this group for the past five years, I have experienced first hand the highs and the lows, and witnessed the resilience the girls have developed as they have overcome every hurdle thrown their way.

“Having the opportunity to represent Queensland at the national titles extends beyond the footy field and into our broader community. I have no doubt that regardless of the result the team will put a performance together that we can be proud of.”

Hills Sports High will give up more than a few years in the experience stakes, but they will make up for it with their pride and passion.

The school’s girls program is only in its first year but has already exceeded expectations by being crowned the best schoolgirls side in NSW.

Hills Sport High will also carry the home field advantage into the game, with 300 of the school’s students ready to fill out part of the grandstands at Allianz Stadium.

“I really wanted to take the whole school, but we could only get enough buses to ship 300 kids into the city,” Hills Sports principal Amanda De Carli said.

“You can’t play in a stadium that big without a crowd, and that shows what it means for all of our students.”

Peter Mulholland Cup Semi Finals

Peter Mulholland Cup semifinals live stream:

Patties Blacktown v St Dominic’s, Erindale v Westfields

While Westfields were class under pressure, they will have to be at their very best in the final if Patties Blacktown produce a repeat of their NRL Schoolboys Cup semi masterpiece. Relive the action.

Watch a full replay of Westfields Sports v Erindale College.

Westfields held off a tenacious challenge from Erindale to set up a Peter Mulholland Cup grand final showdown with Patrician Brothers Blacktown next Wednesday.

Lachlan Galvin was one of the stars of the show, scoring a try and contributing to multiple others to help his side to come from behind to beat the Canberra-based school 22-16 at Campbelltown Stadium.

It was the second year in a row Erindale have gone out at ther semifinal stage.

Westfields’ Roy Quiroz-Mapusa said getting to the grand final is an incredible feeling.

“What an adrenaline rush,” he said.

Lachlan Galvin dives in for a Semi Final Try (Photo : Steve Montgomery)

“We just had to keep believing in each other.

“There’s a reason Erindale got to the finals, but I had full confidence in the boys.”

Erindale gained the advantage early, with Olli Bolatagici benefiting from a Jonah Anderson kick to claim the first try.

Australian Schoolboy Xavier Cacciotti doubled the advantage for Erindale soon after, and a perfect two from two from Sam Gash gave the Canberra side a solid 12-0 lead early on.

Westfields coach Troy Weeden admitted the two early tries was concerning, but the boys didn’t let it impact their confidence.

“To go 12-0 down made me nervous,” Weeden said.

“Our mentality changed after that, we know we can score points when we are in the area, but we just weren’t there enough.”

Galvin was the first to reduce the deficit with a try followed by Brycen Anae Roberts and Sosefo Finau in quick succession to hand Westfields a 16-12 lead heading into the break.

Westfields made it four unanswered tries 10 minutes into the second half as Heith Pritchard powered through from dummy half for the try. A third successful conversion for Quiroz-Mapusua put the side 10 points in front.

Erindale’s Bolatagici was able to claw back some points off the back of an impressive run from Mathias Tomuli-Ah-Koui, but an unsuccessful conversion from Gash kept Erindale just out of reach.

The pro-Erindale crowd were fired up and a sin-bin for Westfields Markuzz Ofanoa only made them louder.

But Westfields held their nerve.

Super Patties Blacktown turn in semifinal special

Patrician Brothers Blacktown have shocked the NRL Schoolboys competition by demolishing the previously undefeated St Dominic’s 32-0 to secure a spot in next week’s grand final.

Fullback Wilson De Courcey called the result and performance ‘amazing’.

“Just crazy,” he said.

“I wasn’t expecting that scoreline, I thought it would be a closer game.

“But we’ve been aiming for this since the start of the season and to get this result is amazing.”

The opening few minutes were very physical with neither side giving an inch.

Marcellus Iakopo got the scoring underway early, dodging past St Dom’s defence before Thomas Epere doubled the lead soon after, following a kick from De Courcey.

St Dom’s were plagued by errors close to the line and the Pats defence was unyielding.

Australian Schoolboy De Courcey grabbed a try of his own just before halftime to extend the lead to 18-0 and it was a long way back for St Dom’s.

Watch a full replay of Patrician Brothers Blacktown v St Dominic’s College.

St Dom’s were gifted a much-needed advantage midway through the second half when Patties player Langa Tokuafu was sent to the sin-bin for a late tackle.

De Courcey said going a man down was frustrating.

“It’s little things like that, discipline, that we really need to sort out,” De Courcey said.

“If it was a closer game, that could have really affected us.”

St Dom’s though couldn’t break through. The closest they got was when a powerful charge from Jack Attard was thwarted by the defence right on the line.

Even down a player, Patties were unstoppable.

A brilliant run from Jaxon Edgar was rewarded as Jack Nicholas found the tryline, and co-captain Finau Latu added a second try in as many minutes to put St Dom’s out of their misery.

Patties’ confidence only grew from there as Nicholas picked up his second try of the match for a stunning 32-0 lead.

PREVIEW

The grand finalists from 2022 may be gone, but there is certainly no doubting the quality of this year’s Peter Mulholland Cup final four.

Patties Fairfield went out in the group stages while Hills were quarterfinal victims, but in Westfields Sports, Erindale College, St Dominic’s and Patrician Brothers Blacktown, there are four teams in peak form and all are capable of winning the title on their best day.

And the semifinal draw only adds to the intrigue.

Catch all of the action from Campbelltown Stadium LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on KommunityTV from 12:30pm on Wednesday, along with coverage of the NRL Schoolgirls Cup semi-finals from 10am. See the full draw below.

Westfields boast a four-game unbeaten run as they prepare for a match-up with Erindale.

Winger Will Craig has been one of the stars of the show, scoring 10 tries in those four games.

FOOTBALL FACTORIES: EVERY AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLBOY OF THE LAST DECADE

“He’s just so strong,” coach Troy Weeden said after Westfields’ 52-6 quarterfinal demolition of All Saints Maitland.

“He’s good at the art, everything he does is just superb and he gets us out of a lot of trouble.”

Australian schoolboy Lachlan Galvin has also been pivotal to Westfields’ success this year and Weeden praised the No.6’s ability to ‘always scoring tries, or contribute to them.’

While heading into the semifinals with plenty of momentum, Weedon conceded there were a few areas he wanted his team to pick up in.

“We need to fix our possession with the ball and control overall,” he said.

“As long as they put on a good performance and look after themselves we’ll be in with a shot.”

RELIVE ALL THE QUARTERFINAL ACTION HERE

Erindale’s quarterfinal clash against Endeavour Sports High School was ‘a bit of a weird game’, according to coach Ashley Barnes.

They eventually pulled off a 28-24 golden point win to reach the semifinals for the second year in a row. Last year they were knocked out in a thriller by Hills.

Barnes said he’s not underestimating the challenge Westfields will pose.

“If we’re as ill disciplined as we were against Endeavour, we’re going to have a really tough game,” Barnes said.

“They’re a powerful side with some really good players there, so we’ll really need to tidy up our game.

“I think if we just focus on us we’ll be really competitive.”

Jack Nicholas scored four tries in the quarterfinals.

In the other game, Patrician Brothers Blacktown have suddenly found a winning formula and head into their clash with St Dominic’s College feeling good about their prospects.

Their 64-6 win over Victorian University Secondary College in the quarterfinals featured an incredible 12 tries, four of which came from Jack Nicholas.

Nicholas said the result was a testament to how well the team are working together now after they fixed the mistakes that plagued them throughout the competition.

“We’re spreading the ball really well, our defence is really good,” Nicholas said after the quarterfinal win.

“Those four tries came from my teammates, we were just strong as a team and hopefully that takes us all the way.”

With St Dom’s going into the clash without yet losing a match in the competition, Nicholas said it’ll be a really tough battle.

“It’ll be a hard game, they’re a good team,” he said.

“It’s always tough when we play Dom’s but we’ll get back to training, work hard and give it a good crack.”

St Doms have been impressive form all year.

St Dom’s struggled with discipline issues during their 26-18 win over Hills Sports, letting in three tries in the second half and having Jack Ewer sent to the sin bin for a high tackle after looking comfortable in the opening half.

“We just switched off,” coach Kyle Churchill said.

“We weren’t cohesive as a group both in defence and in attack, and it took its toll.”

Erindale eye 2 titles

NRL Schoolboys/Girls semifinals live stream: Erindale just one of two schools with shot at title double

Twenty-five years on from their last rugby league schools success, Erindale College have their eyes on not one, but two titles. Catch their boys and girls teams LIVE on Wednesday from 10am.

Watch a full replay of Erindale College vs. Endeavour Sports High School.

Only two schools are still in with a shot at the unique Schoolboys/Girls rugby league double.

One would hardly be surprising. Westfields are, after all, a Sydney sporting powerhouse.

The other shows the reward for hard work and enterprise. Erindale College, the winners of back-to-back boys titles in the late 1990s, are a school on the move.

And, according to Ashley Barnes, who coaches both teams, it’s where ‘we want our program to be every year.’

Erindale have passed every test so far this year.

The Canberra-based school face big NRL Schoolboys/Girls semifinals at Campbelltown Stadium on Wednesday. The boys take on Westfields while the girls will be up against Bass High.

All of the action from the NRL Schoolboys and Schoolgirls semi finals will be available to stream LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on KommunityTV. See the schedule below for full details.

Barnes said it’s a fantastic achievement for the school to be still represented in the competition with both the girls and boys sides.

“We want our program in and around those finals every year and to have both the boys and the girls in the semi finals on the same day is a great achievement for the school.”

The girls have rounded into form at the right time. After defeats to Illawarra Sports and Westfields, they played their best game of the season to take down Matraville 28-14.

Meanwhile, a golden point quarterfinal thriller against Endeavour has put the boys one step closer to breaking a 25-year drought.

Erindale had an elite three-year Schoolboys run between 1996 and 1998, but success has eluded them since.

Samual Gash has a bright career in front of him (Photo : Steve Montgomery)

And memories of being knocked out by Hill Sports in the semifinal stage last year still burn bright.

“We got done in golden point last year, so that was pretty devastating,” Barnes said.

“We do have a number of boys from that side last year, so I know they’re pretty eager to change that around.”

Barnes said the boys understand what a big opportunity this competition is for both them and their school.

“They’re proud to be at Erindale,” he said.

“They know the stakes of each game and they enjoy playing against such big players and teams in the competition.”

Looking ahead to the semifinal against Westfields, Barnes said he and his team know how difficult it will be.

“We’re under no illusions on the challenge we’re coming up against,” he said.

“Westfields is a very impressive side, they’ve got a number of really good players, they play a very powerful game of footy.

Australian Schoolgirls claim win in inaugural tour match

As the Australian Schoolboys team travelled to Fiji last week on their 50th celebration tour, 17 girls were also making history of their own, writing a new chapter for women’s rugby league.

The boys posted an impressive 58-13 win during the anniversary of schoolboys program which first toured in 1972.

An inaugural Australian Schoolgirls side – the first team to travel and to play in an international fixture – joined the boys as part of the Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League tour, with coach Melissa Spero saying the experience was “amazing”.

“The hospitality and generosity shown to us by the Fijian people will never be forgotten by our team,” Spero said.

“Even when the game itself fades, it’s the loving nature of these people welcoming us into their country that will be remembered forever. To share this experience with these girls and see how it changes their lives is something that will always stay with me.”

Inaugural 2022 Australian Schoolgirls team announced

While the team were victorious, posting a 48-0 win, the tour was about more than just the game and the result, with Spero saying the entire camp would help develop the girls into the future, especially with many of them aspiring to reach further representative honours.

“Rugby league is more than just the skills and ability of players on the field, and this is something we made sure that the girls understood,” Spero said.

“We felt it was very important that we set a professional environment for the girls and had them striving on and off the field.

“One thing the Jillaroos place a big focus on is living by their values, not just for the tour, but for their everyday life.

“I felt it was important that we established the same expectations for the young Jillaroos.

We had a session presented by Veronica White that ensured our current players understood where our game had started, who the pioneers were and what sacrifices had been made for the opportunities that are now provided for them.”

One of the players who took hold of the opportunity with two hands was Ebony Raftstrand-Smith, who has had a big year on the representative front.

As well as starring for the Queensland Schoolgirls with a hat-trick in their 30-6 win against New South Wales in the curtain-raiser to State of Origin Game III

She also made her second appearance for Queensland City on Hostplus Cup grand final day.

“The experience in Fiji was very cool, especially being able to go and play against another country,”

Raftstrand-Smith – who is the younger sister of Harvey Norman Queensland Maroons and Gold Coast Titans player Tiana Raftstrand-Smith said.

“It was also a very proud moment being able to represent our country and being the inaugural Australian school girls team.

“Being part of the Queensland Schoolgirls was a great experience (as well), getting to play for our state and getting the win against NSW … I was even able to score a hat-trick.

“But being a part of the inaugural Queensland Schoolgirls team was also proud moment.”

While in Fiji, both touring teams were able to meet with and engage with their hosts, with a school visit a particular highlight.

“In Fiji, we got to visit a school where they showcased us many of their traditional dances and even one of their traditional games,” Raftstrand-Smith said.

“Even just getting to meet the students and playing games with them was really cool.”

Spero said the trip to the school and a visit to the High Commission demonstrated the importance of tours like this.

“I think the school visit by far was the highlight for both teams,” Spero said. “Players and staff got to experience firsthand the beautiful hospitality of the Fijian people, despite not having much at all, they were full of love and generosity.

“Everyone was humbled by the experience.

“Dinner at the High Commission also something to remember. It certainly shows the importance of this tour to have both teams invited to visit the Australian High Commission and chat to the dignitaries present.”

A ground-breaking event for female participation in the game, Spero was excited for what was to come and said the tour would play a big part in helping to develop the next generation of stars.

“The last thing I wanted the girls to take away from being in the squad was to understand the professional standards that they will need to bring into their game for the future,” Spero said.

“With the NRLW expanding next season and women’s rugby league growing at a rate not many sports are seeing, I see a very big future for each and every one of these girls.

“Knowing what they achieved on our tour in such a short amount of time and what is a head of them on their playing careers, I know that they will be successful if that’s the path they choose to take.”

Young Sharks on show at Lisa Fiaola Cup

In what was the first elite level hit out for most of the squad, the Sharks under-17 Lisa Fiaola Cup team handed in some eye-catching performances in the round robin event held yesterday at Tuggerah on the NSW Central Coast.

Under the guidance of coaches Maddie Studdon and Corban Baxter, two former Jillaroos, NSW Origin representatives and Sharks Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership players.

The next crop of female rugby league talent was on show in four matches across the day, with encouraging results.

The young Sharks played out a four-all draw with the Wests Tigers in their opening match, before recording an impressive three tries to two victory over the Newcastle Knights in their second game.

Hard-fought losses to the Bulldogs (16-12) and Victoria (16-8) followed, but the girls were far from discouraged with a number of the senior girls in the 22-player squad expected to push up into the Sharks under-19 Tarsha Gale Cup team ahead of the 2023 season.

Talented dummy half Stephanie Faulkner managed to score a try in each of the four matches, however she was ably supported by many in the Sharks team.

With the Lisa Fiaola Cup the start of a pathway at the club which progresses through the Tarsha Gale, Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership and then the NRLW, with the Sharks having been granted a license to compete in the elite level competition from 2023.

Como u14 girls run riot against Arncliffe to setup all local Grand Final against Titans

Last Saturday the mighty u14 Girls rugby league team from Como took on a formidable Arncliffe Scots in the Elimination Final at PointsBet Stadium. From the opening whistle the Como girls ran riot using their speed to carve up the Arncliffe defense.

By half time the Como girls had put on close to 40 points taking an unassailable lead into the half-time break.

In the second half the Crocs took their foot off the accelerator somewhat allowing and the Arncliffe girls rallied to put on a few tries and the game finished up with a convincing 58-18 victory for the home side.

The Como girls now move into the Grand Final this weekend to take on the Taren Point Titans in what will be a local derby to decide the season.

Como lost to Taren Point in the semi-finals a couple of weeks ago going down 34-20. Taren Point will have the home ground advantage with the Grand Final set-down to be played at Gwawley Oval this Saturday, 27 August 2022 @ 1:10pm.

Best of luck to all the girls and may the best team prevail victorious.
