Keebra Park win National Schoolboys title

Keebra Park High School is celebrating its first National Schoolboys Cup since 2017 after fullback David Bryenton steered the side to a gripping victory in Thursday’s final.

The visitors ran in four tries to two to hold off a fast-finishing Patrician Brothers Blacktown and secure a 20-12 win at Leichhardt Oval.

Patrician Brothers were buoyed by a vocal supporter base, but Keebra Park’s outstanding backs silenced the crowd early and they didn’t look back. The visitors kept their noses in front throughout the remainder of the contest.

The NSW champions battled valiantly, but their comeback effort finished short and they suffered a second-straight defeat in the National Schoolboys Cup final.

Keebra Park coach Peter Norman was thrilled

Keebra Park coach Peter Norman was thrilled with the composure his side showed late and said Thursday’s win was six years in the making.

“We had a large chunk of this group since year seven,” Norman told NRL.com. “To see their growth over the last six years to where they are now is incredible. A lot of them are actually in year 11, so it’s five years of growth.

“We’ve had some tough lessons where we’ve lost games like this and semi-finals but their work ethic and attitude got them this result.

Words can’t describe how proud I am.”

Bryenton was superb throughout the contest, claiming both the player of the match award and the Peter Sterling Medal for schoolboy player of the year.

In doing so, he joined the likes of Ben Te’o, Payne Haas and David Fifita as Keebra Park students to win the medal.

The Year 12 student only joined the school three years ago when he relocated from East Auckland to Australia to pursue his rugby league ambitions.

Bryenton is contracted to the Bulldogs and will move to Sydney at the end of the year to take the next step in his NRL dream.

On Thursday, however, his only focus was on leading Keebra Park to a breakthrough National Schoolboys Cup title in the competition’s 50th year.

“I wanted to come over to Australia for an opportunity,” Bryenton said. “I was having a laugh with the boys back home and I messaged the Keebra Park Instagram page seeing if they could get me over. They accepted it and I’m so happy I’m here now.

“I moved over from New Zealand when I was 15, now it’s my third year, my last year here and it’s a surreal feeling to be leaving Keebra Park with a national title.

“I can’t wait to start a new journey with the Bulldogs next year. It will be a new environment, I’m a bit nervous but excited for it.”

Brisbane Broncos had their hands all over this one as Marsden issued a warning to their Langer Trophy rivals by putting last year’s national champions to the sword. Relive all the action.

The future of the Brisbane Broncos was glimpsed at the North Ipswich Reserve when contracted halfback Coby Black and winger Saxon Innes combined for the try of the season in Marsden State High School’s 30-12 victory over Ipswich State High.

Innes retrieved a kick 15 metres out from his own line, returned it to centre field before a deadly sidestep saw him plunge through two defenders and scorch away down the midfield.

On his hip in support was Wynnum-Manly Seagulls club teammate Black, who finished the try which moved Marsden ahead 20-6 just shy of the halftime break.

Innes is a light stepper and possesses freakish speed – and that’s why he is one of the Langer Trophy’s best finishers.

Earlier, Ipswich hit the scoreboard first through centre LJ Nonu after an Izzy Mafi bomb bounced into his grasp. They led 6-0, but quickly Marsden found their groove once Queensland Schoolboys centre Will Semu dotted one down.

Black then slotted a penalty goal, and made a tremendous trysaving cover tackle on prolific Ipswich winger Alton Naiyep, who was brought down a metre shy of the line.

Marsden turned this pressure situation into a score and a subsequent eight-point-buffer when a trademark Lewis Symonds offload put Patrick Kailahi in under the posts.

Marsden led 20-6 at the break after that spectacular try to end the first, and then 24-6 when Symonds scored a try of his own eight minutes into the second half.

This time it was a hard run from centre Kylem Vunipola, and an inside step from the explosive Xavier Atoa, which undid the Ipswich defence.

A try was just what the doctor ordered for the home side and it was darting dummy-half Lesayne Tuiasau who was the man for the job.

It was a four-pointer which swung momentum back in Ipswich’s favour, but they would rue not making the most of their opportunities when they had possession close to Marsden’s line.

Atoa then put the nail in the coffin at 30-12 when he planted a deft grubber kick impressively engineered in field by Semu, who was in full stride down the left touchline.

Trusty Ipswich forwards Oliva Iaulualo, Kane Self and David Leota were tireless, while Tyler Peckham-Harris added a punch out of hooker in a loss which will serve as motivation heading into the quarter finals on August 9.

WALTERS CUP

Marsden oozed class in their dominant 32-0 victory over Stretton College.

The Makos ran in six tries, and left two out there when their final two tries were disallowed.

They were in fine form, with quick ball out of dummy half from Tayshaarn Tonga, and deadly finishing from winger Quinn Timperon delivering the win at the North Ipswich Reserve.

Line breaks came hard and fast, and once they scored their first, it looked a done deal for the well-oiled Logan side, which was certainly boosted by a quick-thinking fullback in Caleb Cresswell.

Cresswell scored the try of the day with a chip and chase that left the Stretton defenders stunned.

Stretton were game, but Marsden had a ton of possession and a strong connection between their offloading forwards and their impressive backs.

Centre Antonio Okusitino, five-eighth Jack Hepi Simon, Timperon (two tries), Cresswell and interchange forward Frontier Wiperi were try scorers for Marsden.

PREVIEW

Ipswich SHS are riding a five-game winning streak, Marsden SHS have been the pacesetters for much of the year – something has to give in Wednesday’s marquee Langer Trophy match-up.

This will be the last match of the regular season before all eight teams assemble on August 9 at Bishop Park (Norths) in a playoff between teams one through eight.

The eighth ranked school will be replaced at position #6 by the winner of the Gee Cup v Titans Cup match on Tuesday. See that preview here.

If all goes well for these two teams, they may be meeting again on August 23 at Langlands Park, this time for much, much bigger stakes – the Grand Final.

The two schools will clash at 5pm after Stretton State College and Marsden SHS go head-to-head in the final game of the Walters Cup home and away season.

Two of the competition’s strongest centres will be on a collision course at North Ipswich Reserve.

Queensland Schoolboys representative, and arguably one of the most improved players all season, Semu is an awfully strong and quick centre.

Not unlike Semu, Nonu has a good turn of speed and powerful leg drive.

Innes is the speed machine who will be hard to stop if he gets in space. Watch for Coby Black to put him through a hole.

Naiyep on the other hand is also very quick, but a brutal ballrunner who will help Ipswich get onto the front foot when coming out of their half.

Broncos-signed Symonds is an interesting player, a ball-playing lock who can threaten with his own runs, or link the forwards with the backs.

He could have easily been a Queensland Schoolboys representative.

His opposite number is Newcastle-contracted Kane Self, who is a very good player also.

Self is a toiler, a workhorse whose defence and carries from in close will break down the Marsden defences.

There’s a good chance Jack Laing starts at lock, with Self an almighty bench-boost.

Redcliffe SHS v Wavell SHS, Langer Trophy/Walters Cup

Wavell held their nerve to confirm their spot in the Langer Trophy quarter finals as Redcliffe’s wait for their first win goes on another week. Relive all the action from the LIVE STREAM.

With major points and finals chances on the line, it was the visitors, Wavell SHS, who found their second wind and snuck away with a 20-10 win over Redcliffe in round six of the Langer Trophy.

Neither team could break the deadlock in the opening 10 minutes, with both showing extra effort on the attack and defensive end.

But after 14 minutes, Redcliffe finally found themselves in some good field position, and it was none other than Australian schoolboys player John Fineanganofo who crashed over.

Wavell hit back through a nice inside draw and pass between Carlos Ka and Keyarn Pene, before the visitors were in again just before halftime thanks to some good short-side play on the left-hand touchline from centre Tusi Tofu.

Play resumed in the second half with the score at 10-6, and after Redcliffe’s Loka Toia was held up over the line, the home side drew level with a much-needed try.

Those celebrations didn’t last long though with Wavell SHS marching down the other end minutes later and extending their lead 16-10.

A chip kick in behind was fumbled by the Redcliffe backs and right-side winger Riley Jenkins dived onto the ball to score his first of the afternoon.

With less than three minutes remaining, Toia was sent to the sin bin, and that was all she wrote, with Wavell SHS finishing the match 10-point victors and securing their spot in the quarter finals.

Replay: Walters Cup Round 6 – Redcliffe SHS v Wavell SHS

There wasn’t much in this Walters Cup clash, but some strong defensive efforts from Wavell SHS proved the slight difference in a 22-12 victory against Redcliffe SHS.

With both sides chancing their arm in attack and also going toe-to-toe in the defensive line, it was clear from the opening sets that both sides had come to play.

After 10 minutes Wavell opened the scoring by keeping the ball alive and getting it through a number of hands for their left centre to dive over.

A kick restart that landed out on the full wasn’t how Redcliffe SHS wanted to resume play and that was enough of an invite for Wavell SHS to grab their second.

The next kick restart Redcliffe were able to get the ball back before stringing a few simple sets together to get on the scoreboard.

An improved defensive set from Redcliffe wasn’t enough to stop their opposition with Wavell putting up a high ball and adding to their lead.

Neither team was able to gain momentum after the break until Redcliffe crossed the chalk with a much needed four pointer.

Both sides again held their own on the defensive end, with only one final try coming from Wavell SHS before the referee called full time.

PREVIEW

Both sides will be looking to snag the two points in round six when Redcliffe State High School welcome Wavell State High School in the Langer Trophy at Kayo Stadium.

Redcliffe will be searching for their first win of the season while the sixth-placed Wavell will hope to secure their spot in the Langer Trophy quarter-finals with a second win of the season.

The crunch clash will be exclusive live streamed on KommunityTV via the Courier Mail on Wednesday afternoon, with the Walter Cup clash kicking the action off at 2.30pm.

Both sides are coming off round five losses but both coaches admitted it was a very different feeling in the post-match sheds.

“It was a different feeling compared to our earlier losses in the season,” Wavell SHS head coach Paul Stanley said following his sides 18-8 loss to Keebra Park SHS.

“The boys know that they played well, we’re getting closer to our best each week so the boys were disappointed but they didn’t have regret for not giving their best effort.”

For Redcliffe, head coach Jay Wilkinson labelled the 69-22 defeat to Marsden SHS as ‘embarrassing’.

“It was a little bit embarrassing on our own turf and on a big day,” he said.

“I think we sat down, had a good chat about it and have all recommitted and to be honest it’s been the best week at training in quite a while so they’ve responded well.”

With the top seven sides progressing through to finals at the end of the regular season, Stanley said it was a big game for both sides.

“We’re not looking at the table at all because those boys will be playing at their absolute best and it’s a bit of a rivalry for the boys given we’re so close and they’re playing against their mates,” Stanley said.

“We know the talent that Redcliffe has across the park plus they’ve got one Queensland and one Australian schoolboy in Loka Toia and John Fineanganofo so it’ll be important for us to limit their involvement.”

Wilkinson said his side’s focus had been on continuous improvement each week.

“Marsden was a blimp as we didn’t improve but we’re focused on these last two games of the year and we’re pretty confident that if we can play our style that we can pick up two wins and finish sixth,” he said.

“That gets us into finals but also keeps us in the competition next year which let’s the boys leave a legacy.

“Both sides would like to have a couple more wins so it’ll be which school comes out with more enthusiasm and which side gives it a real crack.”

Keebra Park were given quite a scare as Wavell produced their best performance of the season to nearly pull off a Langer Trophy upset.

Wavell SHS produced their best performance of the season, but it was Keebra Park SHS who prevailed in a thriller.

Keebra Park SHS won 16-8, surviving a spirited Wavell effort, which included a dramatic surge late in the second half.

Down 16-4, Wavell winger Carlos Ka scored a sensational try, snatching the ball from the night sky after a towering bomb across the field from his classy halfback Zac Herdegen. That try reduced the margin to 16-8.

Herdegen then sliced through minutes later, sprinting 20m and throwing a dummy.

He looked certain to score, but he lost his balance as he was headed toward the posts.

Earlier in the half, Keebra Park had extended their margin to 16-4 after a glorious ball from Austin Marsters found his centre, Xavier Tauaifaiga, who scored.

It was a good win by Keebra SHS given the improved execution of Wavell and the unavailability of star halfback Ryder Williams.

Earlier, Jesse Soric delivered Keebra a 10-4 lead at the break with two thrusts on the eve of halftime.

A replacement for Williams, Soric capitalised on Keebra’s last-gasp forward surge late in the half to put his edge forward Jett Bryce into a gap.

While Bryce was tackled by Wavell centre Keyarn Pene, he was able to play-the-ball quickly and Soric, looping around to the blind side, blasted over to score.

Wavell winger Riley Jenkins had a busy debut, scoring the first try of the game and then putting his body in front of his opposite, Zyroam Herlihy, who went within a whisker of scoring for Keebra.

Wavell had started smartly, controlling the ball and giving energetic hooker Harrison Hill chances to shine as the starting dummy half.

They also controlled possession and with Herdegen’s smart kicking game, Wavell were playing their best football of the season.

But Keebra Park’s power forwards were the foundation of their reply, recapturing the lead 6-4, and extending it to 10-4 at the break.

Walters Cup thriller as late conversion seals draw

The battle of the fullbacks finished in a draw and so did the match, with Wavell SHS scoring in the last minute to snatch a 20-20 draw.

Wavell halfback Timahna Tandy kicked a conversion 20 seconds from fulltime – from the sideline – after his centre, Devine Timu, had scored in the corner.

One minute earlier Keebra had scored what looked the winning try by halfback Jai Bilish.

However, Wavell interchange forward Payten Gifford stole possession back for Wavell, giving his side one last throw of the dice.

It was a wonderful game featuring Wavell fullback Sangstar Figota and Keebra Park No.1 David Bryenton showing x-factor skills.

Both Figota and his five-eighth, Azariah Toki-Matauri, who is another big gun, provided the horse power leading up to Wavell recapturing the lead, 14-10, into the second half when centre Tremaine Courteney crossed.

In the first half, Figota also made a break from nothing to put his team into position for its second try.

With limited chances Bryenton’s footwork and speed was effortless for Keebra, and it was his half break which also positioned Keebra for its first try of the second half by halfback Jai Bilish.

This was after Bryenton brilliantly scored in the first half.

Bilish’s try 12 minutes from the end enabled Keebra Park to poke its nose level with Wavell – 14-14 – and then Bilish’s second try four minutes from fulltime looked like it had won the game for his side.

Wavell forward Eethan Laga’aia was also an impact player both in defence and with his carries, while Keebra Park prop Christian Rivers finished strongly.

Earlier in the match, Keebra Park scored first down a crowded blindside when centre Kendrix Marsh squeezed over in traffic.

However, Wavell got into their groove with power running and ball control, putting halfback Timahna Tandy into good attacking positions.

Once he ran himself to score, and on another occasion he drove a bomb toward his winger who tapped back inside for centre Devine Timu to cross.

PREVIEW

Wavell SHS students will be inspired by the jerseys they will wear designed by Indigenous students when they confront dangerous Keebra Park on Wednesday.

To celebrate NAIDOC 2023, Wavell’s proud first VIII will be wearing Indigenous jersey designed by their classmates.

Students personal handywork retains Wavell’s traditional school colours, while incorporating beautiful Indigneous artwork in the mid-drift and then bright, earthy colours snaking up the jersey to the neck line.

Wavell coach Paul Stanley said Wavell’s first two loses were “below the standards we set for ourselves’’.

But last week effort was not in question, it was execution, but the signs were positive.

“The players know what needs to change on the field, it’s up to us to get the job done,” coach Stanley said.

Keebra will aim to keep its fire burning.

Keebra have among the fastest players in the competition, and in halfback Ryder Williams they have the best back in the competition not have made the Queensland schoolboys.

Who were the speed merchants of the Langer Trophy competition?

Below are the speed demons who will be in action again on July 13 in round 3 of the Brisbane Broncos-sponsored Allan Langer Trophy elite schoolboy competition.

They are boys who can save tries or score tries because of their pace.

The round 3 games, and all Langer fixtures, were exclusively live streamed by The Courier-Mail, along with News Corp affiliates, on the KommunityTV platform.

Watch for Sam Stephenson on the left centre, a big fast and agile edge player.

Creedence Donovan:

An Indigenous boy who had been playing in the Northern Rivers competition, Donovan has speed to burn.

Ray Peru:

Peru played for Burleigh Bears during the summer and is coming back from injury. He is naturally agile.

Redcliffe SHS

Regan O’Connell as a junior playing for the Caboolture Snakes.

Redcliffe will have no shortage of pace this season, with three quicksilver athletes capable of breaking a match open with their pace.

First past the post would be O’Connell, but Risale also has plenty of pace from fullback or centre. Makai Duggan was “just a natural athlete’’ according to Redcliffe coach Jay Wilkinson.

The centre or winger can move and would be Ipswich SHS’s quickest mover. Xavier Kirk would give him a run for his money.

Xavier Kirk:

Ipswich SHS boys Iosefa Kolio, LJ Nonu and Xavier Kirk

Kirk was as quick as they come in the Langer Reserves competition last year and in Ipswich’s Langer Trophy team, he has already shown glimpses of his blistering speed.

Round 1 was a prime example when he broke away for a solo try against Keebra Park.

Like Peckham-Harris, he isn’t the tallest but if he gets on the outside of you it’s pretty much game over.

The little bloke is deceptively quick. He is fast off the mark, but can also sustain pace over a long distance.

Will join 2022 teammates James Frazer, Joven Gyemore and the towering Loko Pasifiki Tonga at the Dragons once the year is out.

MAGIC MEN OF THE HALVES

Tyreece Tait

They don’t come much better – or faster than Tait. The Broncos signed finisher has a long stride and bounces down field at a great rate of knots.

Mereki Waradoo:

The young representative fullback is dynamic and will give his side plenty of thrust from the back – watch for him pouring down the middle.

Not only is he quick but there’s only few that power through contact like this guy.

John-Paul Donevski:

John-Paul Donevski

John Paul relocated from New South Wales after playing in the NSWCCC for Patrician Brothers Blacktown.

The Penrith junior has pace, which is even more lethal when paired with height – which Doveski has.

A centre, Brooklenn has a couple of gears. Originally from Cairns, he is back from injury and has been gaining more confidence and strength as the months past leading up to the season.

Also throw into the mix Toby Irvine (fullback), and Kaden Humphries.

He played wing and centre for Coombabah SHS previously in the Langer, but will be given freedom at fullback. “He has got wheels,’’ said coach Ben Weston.

McCann has already proven that in the three games so far this season.

Tyrese Tovao:

Tyrese Tovao

Tovao is another genuine quick. He is explosive, capable of running in tries from any distance. Jaycob Kingston-Francis is a light stepper whose pace was a big reason for moving from lock into the centres.

These two offer plenty in the speed stakes. Inness is blinding over 10m while winger Izayah can reach top gear quickly, and sustain that speed. And Marsden also has a bolter when it comes to pace. “Will Semu when he is on. He can move,’’ said Marsden SHS coach Matt Hartigan.

For a second rower Bryce has serious wheels. That near impossible trysaver he made against Marsden SHS at Cbus stadium is all the proof you need.

Mason Barber and Jeremiah Havea:

Barber has no shortage of speed at fullback and next to him is the tall Havea who can really move when he gets going.

With Tupuse in the centres, Keebra looked to have more than enough speed in their locker.

Schoolboy showdown: Marsden v Keebra Park a perfect start to Thursday night

Fans will be treated to an epic Schoolboy Cup battle as an exciting curtain-raiser to the Titans’ Thursday night clash against the Wests Tigers at Cbus Super Stadium.

With both Marsden State High School and Keebra Park State High School undefeated after the season opener of the Langer Cup, both powerhouses will face off in what is set to be a mouth-watering contest showcasing some of the best young talent Queensland has to offer.

“I’m pretty excited… it’s definitely a privilege,” Semu said.

“Last week, I was extremely proud we were able to hang into the end.

“I think we just need to improve our effort areas this week, especially in the middle and on the edges.”

Keebra Park front rower Jack Schmidt is also extremely excited to be playing ahead of the Gold Coast’s Round 15 showdown against the Wests Tigers, as well as seeing the battle between his halfback Ryder Williams (Titans-contracted) and Marsden’s Coby Black (Broncos-contracted).

“I’m pretty excited,” Schmidt said.

“We’ll definitely have to watch out for their halfback Coby Black… he can be quite dangerous.”

Kick-off to the curtain-raiser is at 6.05pm, ahead of the Titans in action at 7.50pm.

This Wednesday saw the crème of the Keebra Park SHS sporting Acadamies converged on the STARS function room at the Southport RSL for the Keebra Park SHS Annual Sports Awards.

Students across all age groups including our GSA (Girls Sports Academy), Rugby League Academy, Basketball Academy and our InterSchool sports program eagerly waited the announcement of our top award, the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the year and this year we were thrilled that we had so many students vying for these coveted titles.

So many in fact hat while Blake Mozer took out the Men’s award with representation at the Australian Schoolboy Rugby League level, there were three of our Girls Academy tied for the honour.

Well done to these three, Skyla Adams, Anne Marie Ratu and Chantay Ratu.

It was also great to see alumni, South Sydney’s Jai Arrow, Gold Coast Titans NRLW player Tiana Raftstrand Smith on hand to present awards along with Current Gold Coast Titans JTS staff member and ex Titans and Manly NRL Half Kane Elgey.

The first of two Keebra Park development days and orientation days scheduled for term 4 kicked off this week with a 60 or so prospective grade 5 and 6 students from a range of local primary schools and from as far afield as Redcliffe converging on the ovals in preparation for joining the grade 7 cohort in 2022.

Joining these future students were alumni and current NRL players, Jai Arrow, Tanah Boyd and Jesse Arthurs and members of our current Opens Schoolboy side to reinforce the real pathways on offer at Keebra Park.

Tanah who has just signed a new 3 year deal with the Titans said that it was always good to be back at Keebra.

“I have good memories of my time here at school and it wasn’t so long ago that I was part of one of these development days.

I was always aware of the players that had come before me and if I can inspire just one of the boys to follow their dream then that’s great”

The future students were put through a series of rotations and drills under the supervision of coaching staff that covered the basics of tackling, passing and spatial awareness and Jai, Jesses and Tanah were on hand, giving feedback, encouragement and advice.

“Any advice I can offer these young players that will help their game is something I feel privileged to be able to do” Said Jai.

“Giving back has always been important to me as I am lucky to have a career doing what I love and I see it as part of my job as a whole to support the next generation of players”

The day was particularly exciting for two of the future students, Hans Haas and Sio Pule Pule who not only got to meet our alumni but were also interviewed by Dominique Loudon of Channel Nine Gold Coast News.

Hans, the younger of brother of Broncos Players player of year Payne Haas said he was looking forward to following in brothers footsteps and that Payne had already been teaching him how to defend while Sio said he was looking forward to stepping up to the meet High Expectations and that he knows Keebra Park expect both on and off the field.

The second of these days will be held at the end of term four and we look forward to seeing all the boys again as they prepare for 2022

Good judges say Brisbane Broncos-contracted Queensland Under 17 City hooker Blake Mozer has “NRL written all over him” as the tall rake from Keebra Park High takes the next step in his rugby league career.

Blake, an intelligent dummy-half who idolises Queensland Maroons legend Cameron Smith, has already enjoyed one of the best groundings a young footballer could hope for and has his sights on playing Intrust Super Cup next year.

The Broncos have wrapped the 17-year-old up until the end of 2023 and he has come through the club’s Elite Player Development program. It was in the EPD squad where Blake learned plenty from the likes of former EPD athletic performance coach David Ballard, now the club’s head of performance.

“I have been there since I was 13, and signed since I was 15,” Blake, who played for Tweed in the Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup side, said.

“The Broncos have developed me brilliantly. I wouldn’t be here without the Broncos. Their development is awesome.

“The highlight for me has been the one-on-one training you get from them. Dave Ballard, who is up with the NRL squad now, and Mick Kennedy, have worked on my speed and skills. They focus on the little things that refine your game.

“Now that I am getting older, it is more about strength and the fitness component to get me ready for the next chapter after school.

“The Broncos obviously see something in me in my position and for me it is about working hard to get to play NRL one day… but it’s step by step, starting with the City game against Country.

“I am looking forward to it. It is the last game of the year before pre-season starts, so it is good to have a bit of rep footy finally after all this COVID has happened.”

Blake said he was “more or less” six feet tall; something he said he would work to his advantage when City play Country at Moreton Daily Stadium on October 2 at 2.20pm.

“It is weird not being the stereotypical short and stocky dummy-half but I have used it to my advantage,” Blake said.

“I have never been that fast and strong so I have used my head to get me to where I am. Playing smart footy is a big part of my role, and using my skills.

“Being tall has its advantages and its disadvantages as well.”

Smith wasn’t the fastest or strongest either, but none were smarter.

“I got the opportunity to go to Melbourne and watch the Storm where I met Cameron Smith,” Blake said.

“He has obviously been my biggest inspiration. There aren’t many that have ever compared to him.

“I like watching the next generation now and particularly a guy like Harry Grant. He is similar to Cameron Smith in the way he thinks, and he is agile which is something I want to include into my game.”

Blake was the captain of the First XIII Keebra Park High side this year and head coach Glen Campbell said he was a gem to coach and had a big future.

“I don’t say this very often but Blake has NRL written all over him and it has been that way for a few years now,” Campbell said.

“He has strength in defence and attack, he is intelligent, his pass is good and he has the tactics. Hence he was picked for the Australian Schoolboy merit side this year.

“He is signed to the Broncos and they will be hanging on to him for grim death. He’s that good.

“Blake reminds me of the Pommie hooker at Canberra [Josh Hodgson] with his thinking game. He is quite tall but he will fill out. As the weight comes on him he will be a physical nine and will handle defence in the middle in the NRL.”

Blake is one of the new breed of young rugby league players with his media skills and eloquence away from the football field. He said his experience at powerhouse school Keebra Park had been crucial to his development too.

“As a Year Seven kid I watched Payne Haas in his final year at the school and it is pretty surreal to think that I could be training with him soon,” Blake said.

“I have been fortunate to have had people like Mr Campbell, Mr [Greg] Lenton, Mr [Peter] Norman and Mr [James] Chapman at Keebra Park. They are all just as important to me as the Broncos.

“James is actually the strength and conditioning coach of our City team and Peter Norman has been the brains of our Keebra Park team as our assistant coach.”

Blake is now ready to take the next step in his footballing journey.

“I played at Tweed this year but I will make the change to play at a Broncos feeder club next year, at Souths,” Blake said.

“I am still eligible for Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup, so I will probably start there and try and work my way up to Cup.”

Keebra Park SHS’s Chantay Ratu and Skyla Adams played the house down to help their side to the Murphy Cup win over Kirwan SHS by 24-8.

Unbeaten Keebra Park SHS jumped out of the blocks with two quick tries before Kirwan SHS prop Theophelia Mosby-Mona spun her way over.

Keebra Park had opened the scoring with an enterprising effort by Faith Tutauha off a Ratu pass, then soon after the long striding Ratu reached out to score her own try.

Ratu hit the pass with the vigor of an edge backrower.

But Kirwan SHS, down 8-nil, worked their way back into the match.

With excellent ball control, they worked over the Keebra Park defence, leading to Mosby-Mona’s close to the line try.

However the killer blow came when Keebra left centre Hailee-Jay Ormund-Maunsell plunged over and the game was safe.

Keebra Park SHS coach Nathan Small said the win was a reward for the commitment the group had shown.

“And that is not only over the last 12 months, but the entire time they have been in the program,’’ Small said.

“Some of these girls have been at the school since year 7, so to see them finish state champions, best school out of 62 teams, is something to be very proud of.’’

Keebra dummy half Layne Northey also gave lovely service to aid her team’s performance.

Despite trailing, Kirwan did score late courtesy of Jairel-Ellan Martin-Savage.
