Stretton SC win Gee Shield grand final

Supporters invaded the field in celebration as a new Gee Cup champion emerged on Wednesday.

Watch the replay of the Gee Shield – St Mary’s vs Stretton

Stretton State College claimed a magnificent Gee Shield grand final 14-6 over St Mary’s on Wednesday afternoon.

Supporters invaded the field in celebration as Stretton players were swamped by their back slapping mates.

It was a fantastic match, and the roar from the Stretton camp at fulltime highlighted how much it meant to these young men.

A penalty goal by Stretton State College forward leader Corey Nassif raised the flags and presented his team with a 14-6 lead two minutes from time.

Stretton College’s dream of playing in the Langer Trophy remains alive after the win against a big-hearted St Mary’s who fought to the death in the Brisbane Broncos-sponsored competition.

The Stretton State College team which won the final.

The second half was full of a series of big moments, including when when Stretton set sail for the right hand corner, looking to wrap up the match, only for St Mary’s pair Harry Eyers and Kobe Timms to scramble Stretton into touch.

Then Stretton dummy half Josh Sharp reached out to score, but he was just centimetres short on the last tackle and St Mary’s escaped.

Stretton State College won the Gee Shield. Jack McCosker, captain, with the shield.

At one stage in the second half St Mary’s interchange forward Botrus Dokshen made three tackles in four as St Mary’s tried to attack with their defence. It was rugged grand final action at its best.

Stretton even tried a field goal in this period looking for a seven point buffer, but Bailey Neave’s kick was charged down by a surging wall of St Mary’s players.

Man of the match Jackson Rose with Broncos legend Mick Hancock.

Two tries in three minutes saw Stretton State College sweep from behind and take a 10-4 lead into halftime.

Prop Lefteris Constanti scored a powerhouse try, running strongly onto the ball after right edge wrecking ball Corey Nassif had shredded the St Mary’s defence.

Nassif’s conversion followed a try onl minutes earlier by centre Josh Beetham who finished off a crisp, free flowing wide passing movement to the left sideline.

All this after had St Mary’s opened the scoring and looked the better side for two-thirds of the first half.

Saints centre Bailey Nash crashed over, with the Clydesdales Meninga Cup representative player disappearing under a mass of bodies, but referee confidently awarded the try. It was 4-nil.

A break soon after by Alijah Duncan, and a kick to the corner from Kobe Timms, had Stretton burning more energy at the wrong end of the field.

Phil Hall and Broncos champions Mick Hancock and Michael DeVere with the St Mary’s captains after the DeVere grand final.

This was further compounded when fullback Tait Cameron broke clear from the subsequent kick-return, although Stretton College did scramble and recover.

St Mary’s were having the better of the first half, with a third clean break, this time by centre Noah Rogers, but Stretton were able to limit the damage.

Stretton State College captain Jack McCosker with Broncos’ Paul Dyer, Matt Gillet, Phil Hall and Mick Hancock.

A Bailey Neave 40-20 then provided Stretton with their best chance, but a sweeping backline movement did not find its mark.

But having had a misfire, Stretton State College finished its best passage of play with a smooth, silky try to left centre Beetham who crossed near halftime in the corner.

The DeVere premiership winning St Mary’s side.

Earlier, St Mary’s College drew first blood on grand final day by claiming a thrilling DeVere Cup decider 20-16.

Saints jumped out of the blocks with two first half tries and were full of running before Stretton State College staged a wonderful grand final comeback.

The match finished with Stretton hammering the St Mary’s line, only for Saints to hang on in a thriller.

The Preview

St Mary’s College senior squad has been praised by coach Louis Reen after rebounding from the disappointment of missing this season’s Langer Trophy competition.

St Mary’s will play comeback kings Stretton State College who claimed a come-from-behind win over Caloundra SHS last Wednesday.

Saints, defeated by Mabel in the Langer playoff, has made every post a winner with a number of new faces this season.

GIRL POWER: HOW THE SCHOOLGIRLS HAD ORIGIN HEROES CHEERING WILDLY

“We were realistic at the start of the year of where we felt we were at,’’ Reen said.

“We lost a number of key players which created opportunities for some younger players to step up.

“Our job as coaches was to get the group to find confidence in themselves again and they certainly have shown that in the last month or two.

“The players also have grown together aided by a positive Confraternity experience which is important for the team dynamic and now we are ready to put our best performance in to beat a strong Stretton outfit.’’

He said the team moved “away from one dimensional power based football’’ to a more creative style of play as the season evolved.

“Our attention to detail in defensive aspects of our game has also been a key area of improvement this season.’’

An eye-catching element of Stretton’s performance in its win over Caloundra SHS was that the side came from behind in wet and slippery conditions when Caloundra seemed to have won the game.

That performance did not surprise forward leader Corey Nassif. “We turned up in attack and defence and kept following each other. “Now we have to turn up again.’’

Nor did the performance to beat Caloundra in the wet from 10-nil down surprise coach Jacks.

“The boys have always shown that type of resilience before and they finished well.’’

Kirwan High v Mackay State High in Aaron Payne Cup

Kirwan State High School’s senior team will be playing for more than the school’s honour when they take the field in the Aaron Payne Cup on Wednesday.

KIRWAN State High School’s senior team will be playing for more than the school’s honour when they take on Mackay State High School in the Aaron Payne Cup on Wednesday.

The side will be wearing special jerseys with a splash of purple as they show their support for the school’s LGBTIQA+ community.

Hoani Harris, Terell Anderson and Vinjenzo Winterstein from the Kirwan Bears. Kirwan High v Mackay State High in Aaron Payne Cup

A big crowd is expected for the match which kicks off at 12pm on Wednesday and hooker Hoani Harris, 17, explained just why the team was carrying out the initiative.

“The reason behind wearing purple is for Wear It Purple Day,” he said.

“Wear It Purple Day is this year on August 26. But we bought the initiative forward to do it this Wednesday, due to a big home game.

“So essentially the whole school will be out watching us and we’re representing the LGBTIQA+ community within Kirwan High.

Hoani Harris, Terell Anderson and Vinjenzo Winterstein from the Kirwan Bears

“We are honoured to wear these jerseys and also just honoured to bring a voice to those that don’t have a voice and are unable to speak out.

“We just want make them feel more comfortable in the community around us and bring energy and real support to everyone.”

Fullback Vinjenzo Winterstein, 17, the brother of former Cowboys star Antonio, added: “We have students from all around the world, different countries, different cultures. We have a diverse community, and our aim is to be inclusive.

“It means a lot to us boys to be able to wear these jerseys for Wear It Purple Day, and to also help raise awareness for our LGBTQIA+ group which is called the True Colours.

“Not only does this give them opportunity to be included, but also gives a voice to those who don’t have one.”

After a mammoth seven-week break from football, coach Nathan Norford expected his Kirwan side to be tested by a Macaky State High School outfit who pushed polished cross-town rivals St Patrick’s in their last meeting.

With rust and fitness all in play, Norford admitted Kirwan’s run to the Aaron Payne Cup finals could hit a rocky start without a top effort.

“We’ve been focusing on making sure our individuals are up to standard with our fitness and individual skills,” Norford said.

“We needed to get together as a team to finetune things because term three is a big one for any schoolboy and we want to be on top of it from the start, if we can.

“(Mackay) is obviously a stronghold of rugby league in Queensland so we need to be on top of our game to make sure we can execute, because they look like a grinding team.”

The loss of centre Riwha Walden to a shoulder injury will be mitigated by the timely return of Cowboys-contracted Jerramaine Nean, who will slot into the right centre position seamlessly.

Wear It Purple Day was first started in Australia on October 15, 2010 and was founded by Katherine Hudson and Scott Williams.

Supporters wear purple to celebrate diversity and young people from the LGBTIQA+ community.

NRL Schoolboys Cup grand final day

Palm Beach Currumbin came from behind to beat Marsden in the grand final of the NRL Schoolboys Cup at Kougari Oval on Wednesday. WATCH ALL THE DAY’S REPLAYS!

REPLAY: South Queensland Rugby League Grand Final – Marsden SHS vs Palm Beach Currumbin

A triple treat of schoolboy grand final action was livestreamed this afternoon by News Corp as part of a feast of schoolboy finals this month.

Wednesday’s action included the NRL Schoolboys Cup decider between Langer Trophy champions Marsden SHS and the most successful south east Queensland in recent years – Palm Beach Currumbin SHS. PBC came from behind to win 22-18 (see below).

In the earlier games at Kougari Oval, Gee Cup action saw Redcliffe SHS beat Clairvaux MacKillop College, while in the De Vere Cup Caloundra SHS were too good for Mabel Park SHS.

THE MATCHES

NRL SCHOOLBOYS SOUTHERN CONFERENCE: MARSDEN SHS v PBC SHS

Palm Beach Currumbin SHS five-eighth Michael Roberts scored a sensational 80m solo try four minutes from fulltime to hand his side the NRL Schoolboys Cup premiership over Marsden SHS.

Roberts, the brother of NRL speed demon James Roberts, snared stolen ball and ran for his life, finding the energy to palm off a Marsden defender and score the try of his young life. PBC won 22-18.

“I was hoping he was going to be able to get there. I saw Leon (Marsden fullback Leon Te Hau) and a few chasers, but I forgot he (Roberts) had that sick left hand fend and he got rid of him,’’ said PBC SHS captain Tom Weaver.

“When he scored it was an awesome feeling.’’

Palm Beach Currumbin SHS 2021 Langer Cup Champions

The winning PBC SHS team.

The man of the moment, Roberts added: “I just picked it up and it (a gap) opened up and I just ran. I was going to pass it but just backed myself and ran the field.’’

It was remarkable as the perennial south east champions Palm Beach Currumbin SHS climbed off the canvas to win over a Marsden side full of character.

With left edge forward warrior Ryan Foran at the peak of his powers when his team needed him most, PBC SHS recovered from 12-nil and 18-8 deficits to find their way to the winners post – again.

Foran scored two close to the line tries down the left side, the second of which raised his team to 18-all.

In a dramatic finish

+ PBC captain Tom Weaver missed a penalty kick that would have broken the 18-all deadlock

+ Marsden SHS hooker Tyree Bowman, playing his best game of the season, burst through but couldn’t find support

+ PBC centre Deine Mariner dropped an attempted intercept

Then came Roberts match winning run four minutes from the end, raising his team to the lead for the first time in the game.

Even then Marsden had one play after the fulltime siren, but PBC SHS survived.

Earlier Roberts scored a try and produced a try assist against a Marsden SHS side that played their hearts out.

Man of the moment Michael Roberts PBC

Man of the moment Michael Roberts.

“That was a really tough game,’’ said PBC coach Tim Maccan. “We are busted. We lost two players during the game and that was just a dead set battering. They threw everything at us.’’

Marsden SHS coach Matt Hartigan praised his team’s character and said they should be proud of their efforts, while also congratulating PBC SHS.

“It is always hard to put into words the feelings that are associated with a game like that, but I was so proud of my Marsden team,’’ Hartigan said. “They showed amazing qualities across the 60 minutes.

“We had our chances to ice the game and no doube we have learnt some invaluable lessons that they will take on their journey.’’

With Marsden SHS halfback Cassius Cowley rising to the occasion, Marsden SHS extended its lead seven minutes into the second half by 16-8 after a set play try which saw centre Teapo Stoltman use his pace cutting back on the inside off Cowley.

But PBC SHS were back in business when Foran scored the first of his two tries, and then another 14 minutes from fulltime.

It was a see-sawing match which saw Marsden led 12-nil and 18-8 before PBC closed in, with Foran brute force left edge running causing trouble.

Leading up to halftime Palm Beach Currumbin SHS fullback Kini Keano and five-eight Roberts lit up Kougari Oval with some dynamic play to spark their team from a 12-nil deficit.

Against a 12 man defensive line following an earlier sin-binning, Roberts scored one try and put his winger Jett Forbes over for another to bring the score to 12-8 at halftime.

It was a half of two halves.

Marsden had all the running in the first part of the game, and in the second – and not helped with Mou Taumaletila being in the sin-bin – PBC SHS dominated the period leading to halftime.

Keano was brilliant against a 13-man defensive line, and even more dangerous against 12 defenders as halfback Weaver enjoyed front football ball courtesy of his pack.

PBC SHS, clearly attacking Marsden’s middle with inside passes, had some success in gathering momentum, and off that momentum Weaver’s running players Keano and Roberts were dangerous.

Palm Beach Currumbin SHS 3. Reef Sommerville, Palm beach Currumbin SHS vs Marsden SHS, Wynnum Manly Leagues Club. Picture: Liam Kidston.

Earlier, Marsden SHS drew first blood through dummy half Bowman who, for the second final in succession, dived over from dummy half.

Prop Xavier Stowers had run a decoy for his fellow front rower Lance Fualema, but his quick play the ball when tackled enabled Bowman to plunge over unopposed.

Marsden gained further momentum when Cowley got through the front line and won a penalty for his side after skip Chris Faagutu had got his team onto the front foot.

From the new set of six big Fualema, denied a few minutes earlier, scored and it was 12-niL.

When PBC SHS ventured inside Marsden’s quarter line, Faagutu put his shoulder to the grindstone to put a big tackle on PBC SHS’s Bailey Martin.

Marsden SHS Cowley was up for the big dance, playing straight, offering passes either side of him and kicking with precision.

DE VERE CUP: MABEL PARK SHS v CALOUNDRA SHS

Caloundra SHS’s open program looks in safe hands after its year 10 De Vere Cup side won its grand final over Mabel Park SHS today.

Playing with speed and skill, Caloundra’s quick, mobile pack started at a gallop and never lost stride, winning 36-4.

REPLAY: De Vere Cup Grand Final – Caloundra SHS v Mabel Park SHS (10B’s)

Mabel Park defended stoutly into the second half, but a show and go by Caloundra halfback Tully McLellan got Caloundra on the board again and it was 30-nil.

Caloundra SHS could not have started better.

The grand final winning De Vere Cup Caloundra SHS side.

They led 12-nil and then 18-nil when No.7 McLellan showed a clean par of heels running down the right hand sideline.

And it was 22-nil when McLellan ball-played beautifully at the line, taking a hit but getting a pass away to a rampaging Brodie Halpin whose long stride carried him 30m to score.

Off the back of quick play the balls, Caloundra rolled forward at pace, with an uptempo game unsettling the Mabel Park SHS defence early.

Michael De Vere, whom the competition is named after, with Caloundra captain Jack Philip

Caloundra SHS lock Hayden Gallagher was the picture of determination when he twisted and turned and plunged over to score the opening try next to the posts.

Next the explosive speed of fullback Brooklenn Mundraby-Grogan was on show when he finished a wide, right hand raid, handing Caloundra a 12-nil lead.

GEE SHIELD: REDCLIFFE SHS v CLAIRVAUX MACKILLOP COLLEGE

The best side all season, Redcliffe SHS, deservedly finished with the silverware at Kougari Oval today.

Redcliffe beat Clairvaux MacKillop College 46-nil, roaring out of the blocks to lead 26-nil before going on with the job.

REPLAY: Gee Shield Grand Final – Redcliffe SHS v Clairvaux MacKillop College

Reddy have only lost one match all season – the Langer Trophy qualifying final –

but there was no way they were going to lose today’s decider.

Props Sefo Faatuono and Matt Bennett laid early platforms, while edge backrower Jacob Taulani scored a magnificent grand final try.

Hooker Jack Cameron delivered slick passing off the back of quick play the balls, while out wide centre Tom Lunney and Dan Dawes enjoyed first half tries.

The Redclfife forwards were big and mobile, with Braith Major, Kiahl Moore and Taulani punching out the metres while also being line breaking threats.

Earlier, the two Redcliffe props combined beautifully to open the scoring in the Gee Cup grand final, with Sefo unloading to Bennett who stormed over beneath the posts after six minutes.

It was 10-nil not long after when five-eight Blake Kehl threw a lovely long ball to his winger Dan Dawes who scurried over in the corner.

In between Clairvaux winger James Richardson threatened with a sideline run, but Kehl in cover and Redcliffe fullback Tyler Fishlock were up to the task in defence.
