NSW U19s Women go back-to-back

The Westpac NSW U19s Women’s team secured back-to-back wins in the annual State of Origin clash after defeating Queensland 26-10 at Sunshine Coast Stadium tonight.

With seven players taking the field from last year’s winning team, NSW once again proved too strong for their counterparts ensuring the shield returns back to Sydney for another year.

The opening 10 minutes saw both sides struggle to complete sets with each team making costly errors however once each team cleaned up their discipline the game turned into set-for-set football.

Queensland found the try line first through prop Reegan Hicks who crashed through the defensive line to score the first four-pointer of the game in the 15th minute.

Despite conceding the first points, NSW bounced back quickly through forward Bronte Wilson who made an immediate impact off the bench, scoring in her first touch of the game.

For the remaining 15 minutes of the half NSW had all the momentum and were marching up the field into Queensland territory with ease.

Five-eighth Evie McGrath added another four points on the board chasing a loose ball – dropped by QLD on the fifth – to regather and score in the corner.

Holding all momentum, NSW made QLD pay once more just before half-time, shifting the ball quickly out left creating an overlap for centre Tyra Ekepati who ran through a hole in the defensive line to score.

A successful conversion goal from fullback Logan Fletcher saw NSW head into half-time with a 16-6 lead.

Queensland came out of the blocks firing to start the second half, and in what felt like déjà vu to the opening 30, they were first to add points to the scoreboard.

Regathering the ball through a lucky bounce of the ball, QLD winger Jennifer Kimber raced 20 metres downfield to score.

Clicking back into gear in the 47th minute, hooker Tori Shipton found space through the middle of the field before offloading to lock Ryvrr-Lee Alo.

Alo raced down field before passing the ball to halfback Kasey Reh who scored under the posts.

Where the Blues fans unite

NSW proceeded to go back-to-back, finding themselves back within 10m of Queensland’s try line before the left edge combined to send winger Maria Paseka over in the corner.

Finding themselves defending their line for the remaining six minutes of the game, NSW proved too strong holding out QLD until the full-time buzzer rang.

NSW Under 19s Women’s State of Origin squad announced

The NSWRL is pleased to announce the Westpac NSW Under 19s Women’s squad has been named for the Women’s State of Origin Under 19s match at the Sunshine Coast Stadium in Queensland on Thursday 19 June.

The 20-player squad includes seven players from last year’s team which defeated Queensland 46-4 at Leichhardt Oval in Sydney – Ryvrr-Lee Alo, Indie Bostock, Evah McEwen, Evie McGrath, Maria Paseka, Kasey Reh and Bronte Wilson.

The team includes eight players from Westpac Tarsha Gale Minor Premiers Illawarra Steelers, and five from Premiers Parramatta Eels.

The Westpac NSW Under 19s Women will be coached by Courtney Crawford, who coaches the Illawarra Steelers in the Westpac Tarsha Gale Cup (Under 19s), with Ryan Walker (Parramatta Eels) and Melissa Spero (Sydney Roosters) appointed as her assistants.

The squad will come into camp on Friday 13 June and train at the NSWRL Centre of Excellence at Sydney Olympic Park before heading to the Sunshine Coast on Monday 16 June.

NSWRL NSW Under 19s Men’s and Women’s Origin teams

The NSWRL is pleased to announce the representative teams for the CABE NSW Under 19s Men and Westpac NSW Under 19s Women to face Queensland at Leichhardt Oval on Thursday 20 June.

The games showcase the best rising talent in Rugby League with the women’s match to kick-off at 5.45pm and the men’s match at 7.45pm.

Both games will be shown by Fox League on Fox Sports, and 9Now, with the women’s match also to be shown on 9Gem, and the men’s match on Channel Nine.

The CABE Under 19s Men’s team features players from the UNE SG Ball Cup (Under 19s) and SLE Laurie Daley Cup (Under 18s), and includes Canberra Raiders fullback Chevy Stewart, 18

Penrith Panthers winger Jesse McLean, 19, who have already made their NRL debuts.

Stewart has played three games for the Green Machine in 2024.

Making his debut in the 21-20 win over the Gold Coast Titans in Round 6. He has also made seven appearances in the The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup where he has averaged 141m per game, and has scored three tries, had three try assists and two line breaks.

McLean made his NRL debut for the Panthers against the Parramatta Eels last year and made his second appearance this season in the Round 13 match against St George Illawarra Dragons where he scored a memorable try.

He has also made 11 appearances in The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup where he has averaged 155m per game, and has scored eight tries, had nine line breaks and a try assist.

The team also includes Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs boom halfback Mitchell Woods, 18, who captained the UNE Harold Matthews Cup to a premiership win in 2023 and was named the UNE SG Ball Cup Player of the Series in 2024, and hooker Matthew Arthur, the son of former NRL Parramatta Eels coach Brad Arthur.

The Westpac NSW Under 19s Women’s team features players from the Westpac Tarsha Gale Cup and includes 10 players from the premiership-winning Illawarra Steelers.

Including Player of the Series and halfback Kasey Reh, the niece of former NRL players Brett and Glenn Stewart, and Indie Bostock, the sister of NRL Dolphins winger Jack Bostock. There are also three players from Grand Finalists Newcastle Knights.

Stewart played in the corresponding match last year along with forwards Jermaine McEwen (Newcastle Knights) and Sam Tuivaiti (Parramatta Eels)

While the women’s squad has two players from the 2023 team – centre Linsday Tui (Parramatta Eels) and utility Evie Jones (Newcastle Knights).

The CABE NSW Under 19s Men’s team will be coached by True Blue Andrew Ryan, who guided them to consecutive wins in 2022-23. True Blues Shaun Timmins, Luke Bailey and Steve Turner form part of his coaching staff.

The Westpac NSW Under 19s Women’s team will be coached again by Kate Mullaly, who has previously acted as an assistant coach to Kylie Hilder for the Westpac NSW Sky Blues.

The Westpac NSW Under 19s Women’s team will be looking to return the Shield to NSW after a narrow 20-14 loss last year.

NSW Under 19s Representative teams named for State of Origin

The NSWRL has announced the CABE NSW Under 19s and Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Under 19s squads for the Under 19s State of Origin on Thursday 23 June at Leichhardt Oval.

Both squads have been in camp since Saturday 18 June ahead of their respective matches that will be broadcast on the Nine Network and FOX SPORTS with the teams representing the next generation of Rugby League stars.

Progressing through the pathways system. It is the first time pathways games have been played for both the men’s and women’s teams after the last two years were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The importance of representative pathways teams is currently reflected in the Brydens Lawyers NSW Blues and Harvey Norman NSW Sky Blues selected for the Origin series this season.

The NSW Blues squad who took part in Game One in Sydney includes former NSW Pathways players Cameron Murray, Payne Haas, Kotoni Staggs, Brian To’o and Stephen Crichton.

The NSW Sky Blues squad named for the Ampol Women’s State of Origin at GIO Stadium in Canberra on Friday 24 June includes former pathways players Teagan Berry, Filomina Hanisi, Olivia Kernick and Caitlan Johnston.

NSWRL announces Under 19s representative teams

The Harvey Norman NSW Under 19s Women’s Origin team have successfully defended their State of Origin title after defeating the Maroons 16-12 in a blockbuster clash at Sunshine Coast Stadium on Friday night.

The match also marked the first representative state pathways fixture to be played since 2019 after last year’s COVID-affected season.

The Blues’ Luisa Yaranamua earned Player of the Match honours after a superb start to the contest, scoring the opening try and setting up the second for Blake Cavallaro’s side.

The two sides struggled for territory in the opening ten minutes with neither outfit seeing any real scoring opportunities early on.

In the 12th minute, however, it was the Blues who would take the early advantage after earning a penalty in the attacking ten-metre zone.

Shifting to the right-hand side early in the set, five-eighth Yaranamua took on the Queensland defence herself and muscled her way over the line for the first points of the night. Rueben Cherrington failed to convert to leave the score at 4-0.

Five minutes later the Maroons came within touching distance of the try-line, but a fifth-tackle grubber rolled over the dead ball area to hand possession back to NSW.

In the closing minutes of the first half, Queensland conceded another penalty – with ball-in-hand – in their own half allowing the Blues an opportunity to extend their lead before halftime.

The Blues did exactly that and again Yaranamua was heavily involved in the try, latching onto an offload from five metres out before throwing a pinpoint cut-out pass for Teagan Berry to score.

With the halftime whistle approaching the Maroons were desperate to get on the scoresheet before the break, and they received a chance in the 29th minute after a NSW error in their own red zone.

Within a matter of seconds the Queenslanders were able to cross the stripe through back-rower Sara Sautia on the left edge. Second row forward Zoe Cook converted from out wide as the siren sounded to leave the Blues clinging to a 10-6 lead at halftime.

The Maroons continued their momentum in the early exchanges of the second half, finding themselves in attacking position in the 33rd minute before Hannah Larsson charged at a gap in the defensive line to score untouched beside the posts. Cook converted her second goal for to give Queensland a 12-10 lead.

The ensuing 13 minutes of the match saw points at a premium as both sides made handling errors close to the line before NSW were presented a chance in the 45th minute with a scrum on their own 10-metre line.

Enter Teagan Berry.

Halfback Tayla Montgomery threw a long ball from the feed and, within two passes, it found the hands of Berry who outpaced her opposite winger and raced away for her second try. Yaranamua took on the goalkicking duties and successfully converted for a 16-12 lead.

The Blues then attempted to push their lead further with a minute remaining, but the ball was kicked dead to give Queensland one more chance to score with seven tackles in hand.

NSW looked to be on their heels as the Maroons were tackled only metres from the try-line, before the visiting side forced an error at the play-the-ball to seal the four-point win and spark wild celebrations.
