Greece win European u19s shield

Hooker Peter Kokontis led the way with three tries as Greece eased to the European U19s Shield with a comprehensive 94-6 win over Norway at the CREPS Font Romeu high performance facility in the Pyrenees, France, to end the tournament unbeaten.

The dominant Greeks ran in 18 tries in all, William Giovas with two in the opening 13 minutes, as they built up a 52-6 half time lead, stand off Joshua Silverstone-Utheim with Norway’s reply, to maintain his record of scoring in every game.

“I’m ecstatic for the boys, all 22 of them,” said Greece head coach, Jim Pizanias, to the background of bouzouki music ringing out from the victorious dressing room.

“They all got games in this series and it was great to see our six domestic players on the field in this match together, that was the best part about it.

“All those boys had a great tour, they really loved it and they’ll go back to their schools and universities and will let everyone know how great it is to play for Greece at rugby league.

Hopefully we can get a 19s competition going in Greece on the back of this.”

The other winners in the final round of Shield matches were Ireland, who just held on to defeat Canada 44-40 in a thriller, late tries from Ieffi Hannan, Samuel Douglas and centre Eddy McGillan seeing them home.

“Fair play to Canada, what a team,” said Ireland head coach Dave Merrick, as his side claimed second spot on the table.

“We planned to move their big men about but it didn’t come off so we had to revert to basic rugby, it became a battle of attrition and our boys had a lot of heart.

“Sometimes you’ve got to be firm to be fair and that’s what the boys got at half time.”

Winger Jacob Williams posted a hat trick for the young Wolverines who led 22-12 at the break but just couldn’t hold on in the end.

Squads announced for Euro u19s

The squads have been announced for the U19s European Championships which commence on Sunday 12 July at the CREPS Font Romeu high performance facility in the French Pyrenees, with all the nations accommodated on site.

Split into the Championship and Shield, round two will be played on Wednesday 15 July and the tournament completes on Saturday 18 July and features a record ten nations.

Each 19-player matchday squad (announced 24 hours in advance) must feature eight domestic quota players, with at least six of them being named in the starting 17, to encourage further growth of youth domestic competitions.

European RL chair, Dean Andrew, commented: “It’s fantastic to see such varied and diverse squads announced for the fourth edition of the European Rugby League U19s Championships.

The event will be the biggest to date and I’m sure that all of the nations will have a fantastic experience in France as well as the chance to test themselves, they’ll also have the opportunity to make some new friends and take part in an experience of a lifetime.

“I’d like to wish all of the participating nations good luck! They’ve all worked hard to raise funds and to prepare their squads, with many of the nations’ leadership teams giving their time voluntarily.”

This is the fourth running of the competition begun in Serbia in 2018 won by France, staged in Italy in 2022 won by England, and Belgrade again in 2024, retained by England.

A hat trick of tries from fullback Richard Lui Buch was the highlight as Norway U17s defeated Montenegro 30-8 in Alcoa, Farsund.

“I was impressed with the performance, it was a hard game,” said Norway U17s coach Lars Haigh. “Montenegro were a big physical team but our try line defence was immense. In attack we were a little bit basic but we can work on that. I’m very happy overall.”

He added: “We had a few standout players, Timur Liman seemed to be involved in every tackle, Leander Nesvic was going very well until he was injured and of course Richard Lui Buch was excellent.

We are hoping to play a further game this year at this age group, we’ll train a few more times, but the aim is to continue to improve these players and increase the pool for the national teams.”

Prop Nesvic opened the scoring after 17 minutes, the hosts having repelled early Montenegro pressure, Lui Buch adding to their advantage, Yazan Farjan converting both in a faultless kicking display.

The visitors hit back when Nemanja Durdevac powered through the middle to find the line, Stefan Janjic unable to convert, leaving it 12-4 at the break.

Montenegro capitalised

Montenegro capitalised on a Norwegian error from the restart, hard-working Vasilije Stojanovic going over but Lui Buch halted any hopes of a comeback, leaping out of dummy-half to add his second try.

Sustained pressure saw the visitors camped out on the Norwegian try line for much of the remainder of the half until a pressure relieving penalty allowed Lui Buch to claim his treble.

A final score for Norway saw Hjalmar Birkeland Olsen go over as the whistle sounded, Farjan adding his fifth conversion as the last act of an entertaining game.

Montenegro U17s coach, Aljosa Marinkovic, noted: “There is an obvious difference in experience between the two sides.

Norway knew how to finish near the try line whereas we got a bit excited and we have to do like Norway and play a little bit more with the brain.

“I was very pleased with everybody, they gave their best but especially with the performances of Vasilije Stojanovic and Luka Šimunovic who have come back into the side.

We need to play as many games as possible, and over the next two years we are aiming to play in the European U19s Championships.”

European rugby league u19s championship expands to 10 nations

The fourth European Rugby League U19s Championship will expand to a record ten nations when it takes place at the Centre de Ressources, d’Expertise et de Performance Sportive (CREPS), Font Romeu in the Catalonian Pyrenees between 10 and 19 July 2026.

Norway and Greece will make their tournament debuts, while Wales and Ireland return to the Championship after last competing in 2022 in Italy. Then, Wales achieved a bronze medal in the Championship and Ireland were crowned Shield champions.

Rugby League Norge president, Anne Haigh, commented: “We have been developing our youth programme for some time and played several games at both U16s and U19s already. It is time that we tested ourselves in a competitive environment and give our youth players the opportunity to experience such big a tournament. We’re very much looking forward to travelling to France and being part of the event.”

“Its great news for the Greek Rugby League Federation that we are able to move forward and compete in the European Rugby League U19s Championship in 2026,” said GRLF official,

Terry Liberopoulos. “We are aiming to further progress and become full members of International Rugby League, and a key part depends on the growth of our youth programme. Having the opportunity to represent their country will be a massive motivator for the young people playing rugby league in Greece.”

The quartet join reigning champions England, hosts France, Scotland, Serbia, Ukraine and USA, the young Hawks continuing their participation from the 2024 tournament in Belgrade when they made their bow, the Americas coming under ERL jurisdiction.

France won the 2018 tournament with a narrow 26-24 victory over England in the final but were beaten 14-12 in 2022’s decider by England, the English going on to become back-to-back champions in 2024 after coming from behind against France to triumph 15-8.

“I’m very pleased that we have been able to grow the competition to ten nations,” said ERL chair Dean Andrew.

The U19s Championship is always an exciting event and adding a further dimension to it with new competitors will generate even more interest.”

The format and fixtures for the European Rugby League U19s Championships will be confirmed in early 2026.

2026 European rugby league u19s championship hosts announced

France will host the European Rugby League U19s Championship for the first time, with the 2026 tournament taking place at the Centre de Ressources, d’Expertise et de Performance Sportive (CREPS) in Font Romeu in the Catalonian Pyrenees.

The prestigious national training centre is located at the heart of a natural park, originally built in 1967 to prepare for the Olympic games in Mexico, it is one of the most renowned high-altitude sports training facilities in Europe.

FFRXIII president, Dominique Balou, commented: “It is with great joy and immense pride that the French Rugby League Federation will host the U19 European Championship in the summer of 2026.

“This choice recognizes the FFRXIII’s unwavering commitment to the development of rugby league among young people, as well as our ability to organize international events in optimal conditions.”

He added: “Font Romeu, an iconic venue for high-level sport, combines excellent infrastructure, a warm welcome, and the beauty of a unique mountain environment. It will offer an unforgettable experience.

“We are committed to making this event much more than a competition: a great celebration of the sport, marked by respect, passion, and camaraderie. I would like to thank all the partner institutions, local authorities, volunteers and clubs who will contribute to the success of this event.”

The biennial Championships have previously been held in Serbia (2018 and 2024) and Italy (2022) and will take place from 10 July 2026, with finals day scheduled for Saturday 19 July.

Organizers are planning for an eight-nation tournament but have the capacity to host more teams and alternate formats as required.

Jean-Marc Ayel, president of FFRXIII’s National Youth Commission, noted: “It is a unique opportunity, both in sporting terms and for local influence. Organizing such a competition puts the region on the European map while generating significant economic and media impact.

“Coverage by the regional press, local radio stations and social media offers exceptional visibility for rugby league. Volunteers, the backbone of the organization, will be at the heart of this success while for the players, it’s a true celebration.

“It is also a fantastic opportunity to showcase a region rich in heritage, gastronomy, and landscapes. Visitors can take advantage of their stay to explore our natural sites, charming villages, culture and way of life.”

France won the 2018 tournament with a narrow 26-24 victory over England in the final but were beaten 14-12 in 2022’s decider by England, the English going on to become back-to-back champions in 2024 after coming from behind against France to win 15-8.

“I am delighted that the 2026 men’s Euro U-19s Championship is going to be held in France,” said ERL chair, Dean Andrew.

“Taking the 2026 competition to the centre-of-gravity of French rugby league is the perfect next step for the development of the junior game.

I must congratulate the French Federation for submitting an excellent bid.

“The facilities at Fort Romeu are outstanding and will provide an excellent backdrop to what promises to be an exciting competition”

Futurestars charity and Ghana rugby league partner to support young players

Futurestars Charity has announced a new partnership with the Rugby League Federation Ghana (RLFG) to help young, underprivileged children through education and sports.

The organizations have signed an agreement to provide scholarships, mentorship and sports opportunities.

Students who play rugby league with RLFG and those in Futurestars Charity partner schools will receive school support, financial help, learning materials and guidance to help them.

Futurestars Charity will provide scholarships covering school fees, uniforms, books and meals, while RLFG will train and guide the students in rugby league, giving them more opportunities in the sport.

John Boyd has been selected as the first student to receive a Futurestars Charity scholarship through rugby league.

Simon Militon, director of Futurestars Charity, commented: “We believe that education and sports go hand in hand.

This partnership with RLFG will help children reach their full potential both in the classroom and on the rugby field.

We are very happy to support John and many more children in the future, his passion for learning and sports makes him the perfect choice.”

John’s mother, Victoria, noted: “This is a dream come true for my son.

I have always wanted him to do well in school, but things have not been easy.

Now, with this scholarship, he can continue his education and still play the sport he loves.

I am so grateful to Futurestars Charity and RLFG for giving him this chance.”

RLFG general manager, Jafaru Awudu Mustapha, noted: “This partnership will make sure talented children get the education they deserve while growing in the sport.

This partnership is a big step toward helping them build a better future.”

Norway youth travel to Serbia

Norway’s U16s and U19s sides will tour Serbia from 29 August to 1 September 2024 to participate in the Belgrade Trophy, the youth tournament organized by the Belgrade Rugby League Federation and supported by Belgrade City Council since 2005.

The sides will play in a double header against their Serbian counterparts at the FC Radnicki Novi Beograd Stadium on Sunday 31 August (kick off U16s 4pm, U19s 6pm, local time)

Both matches live streamed on the European Rugby League and Serbian Rugby League Facebook pages.

For the visitors, it will revive memories of their first-ever junior international in May 2017, when Serbia U18s went to Nannestad, north of Oslo to face the Norwegian U19s, winning 54-12.

Norway U16s and U19s head coach, Tim Jones, commented: “The Norwegian players are coming off a camp in Lillestrom with their mood upbeat but expectations realistic.

The young Vikings are in a very much development phase of our National Youth Pathway.

But there is currently a huge buzz about rugby league in Norway, with many people working hard behind the scenes both at club and national level.”

”I’m very happy with both squads”

Jones added: “I’m very happy with both squads and looking forward to every player gaining vital game experience to help aid their development.

It’s a win-win situation for us regardless of the results, by giving the boys a very tough competitive fixture.”

Vladislav Dedic, Serbia U19’s national team coach, noted: “We look forward playing against Norway. After the Euro U19s Championship here, this is a perfect game to test our guys again.

As young players they appreciate all chances to represent their country, and this is an opportunity for some to put themselves on the radar for the open age national team.”

Serbia U16’s national team coach, Milos Stamenkovic, said: “This year has been exceptionally exciting for our young players.

In addition to participating in the European Championship, we had the honour of hosting Featherstone Lions.

With matches against Norway now our players are effectively ending their school summer break with a rugby ball in hand.

The atmosphere in the team is fantastic, and we believe that these games will bring much benefit and joy to both our guests and ourselves.“

USA and Scotland win ranking matches at u19s Euros

In the two ranking games to complete the European U19s Championship in Belgrade, unlimited substitutions ensured that all squad members were given a run and to help counter the week’s considerable heat.

A hat trick try from USA centre Siaosi Koloamatangi two minutes from time ensured a 26-22 win over determined Ukraine, the conditions cooler after morning rain.

“We came here not knowing what to expect or how our boys would go but to win two of our three games is very pleasing,” said USA Young Hawks head coach, George Tupou.

This was a tough game

“This was a tough game but we managed to win it and this brings us a lot of attention and a hopefully a wider pool of talent, it’s getting our name out there.”

Ukraine lost influential Ryan Jurkans, who was injured in a tackle after the game’s opening break away in the first minute but they opened the scoring when Ryslan Lipisii created the space for Arsen Havdo to burrow his way over.

Drayson Moliga returned a penalty kick that failed to find touch half-way to spectacularly dive between the posts, giving Lidarius Moananu an easy shot on goal to nose USA in front.

Koloamatangi latched onto a sublime offload to move USA further ahead and added his second three minutes later, Michael Fonua converting the first.

Ihor Yefanov stepped and dummied his way into the corner for Ukraine to keep them in touch, adding a superb conversion from the touchline to make it 16-10 at the interval.

In the 45th minute, Popeliuk Valerii angled his run to the posts, Yefanov levelling, and Andrii Mordovanets capitalised on a USA mix up at the back from a kick for Vitaliy Bycharskyi to add an easy conversion.

Isaac Fonua hit back for USA on the hour mark, diving into the corner from brother Michael’s pass, but Moananu was unable to convert. Koloamatangi had the final word, just latching onto a kick into the in goal to settle the outcome, giving Chris Malo an easy shot on goal.

Yefanov was sent off for disputing the decision, leaving Ukraine shorthanded for the final two sets of a superb game.

Ukraine U19s coach, Ihor Yurkin, commented: “It was a great game, we tried our best throughout and even though we lost this – and the whole tournament – has been a great experience for our boys.”

After the tournament formalities, the Ukraniain squad left on a two day bus journey back home.

Scotland proved to be too strong in their final match, defeating hosts Serbia 56-0 in a contest not without controversy.

Jacob Grierson crossed for Scotland’s second try in the 12th minute but was then sent off for punching.

Serbia’s Sasa O’Flynn dispatched to the sin bin for his part in the incident which was also placed on report – but the Scots took the setback in their stride.

“It was an impressive win for the boys,” said Scotland U19 coach Mark Milnes.

It was a really gritty victory

‘It was a really gritty victory and great to see a lot of young lads make their debuts.

We have a development programme in place and hopefully this is the start of something.”

Frazer Murray opened the scoring before Grierson dropped the ball over line prior to his try and red card and, with both sides a man down, Tom Gray and Harry Roper went over, Michael Myles perfect with the boot.

With Serbia restored to 13 men they showed more promise and pressure, camping out on Scotland’s line for several sets but couldn’t make it pay, Bailey Schneider extending Scotland’s lead.

Centre Murray posted his brace a minute into the second half and Jack Suddick found his way to the line ten minutes later, Oli Brady on successful kicking duties.

A powerful run from 40m out by prop Isaac Reid added further points just after the hour mark, Isaac Jepson crossing on the next set.

Scotland’s tenth try came from a long Hayden Cumming break, Maxwell Shelton backing up for the touchdown.

Serbia coaching consultant, Darren Fisher, said: “It’s been a great competition overall and for our boys it’s been a great learning curve.

It’s been good to see us put some structure in our game as the competition went on. We’re pretty pleased despite the results.”

Two tries from prop Miller Dalton – his second in the final minute – saw England’s community Lions retain the European Rugby League U19s title with a dramatic 15-8 win over France, after a sensational final at a rainy FK Radnicki Stadium in Belgrade.

There was little between the sides throughout, France leading 8-7 on the hour mark after clawing back England’s 7-0 lead at the break, until Dalton’s late intervention, powering over from close in between the posts to seal victory.

“The performance was outstanding, I couldn’t fault the efforts of any of the players,” said jubilant England U19s head coach Gary Hewer.

“They kept turning up for each other for the full 80 minutes. We’ve grown into this competition from the start and been on a journey for almost 18 months to achieve this.”

Hewer added: “We were always under pressure, but this group is so close knit they just kept turning up no matter that the French kept coming at us and it showed the passion for the shirt.”

After an intense but scoreless opening quarter, with both sides having early tries ruled out, player of the match Dalton opened the scoring with a well-rehearsed move seeing him crash over, George Jamieson adding the conversion.

France went on concerted attack, England fullback Josh Langley cleaning up superbly in goal, but the young Tricolors could not convert it into points as tenacious scrambling defence kept them at bay.

With half time approaching, England captain Devan Sharp added a drop goal to edge his side to a two-score lead.

The intensity went up at the start of the second period, England finding themselves down to 12 men as Marcus Geener was sin binned for a professional foul after he hung on too long following a French breakaway.

France failed to take advantage of the extra player, but shortly after Geener’s return Clement Martin found himself in space and put Matis Jammes away for their opening score.

Mateo Jiminez-Lopez’s conversion bringing France back to within one point.

A penalty on the hour-mark saw Jiminez-Lopez move his side ahead for the only time, England spurning a chance to score shortly afterwards, fumbling a kick with the line open.

The lead changed hands again when England were awarded a penalty for a shoulder charge, Jameieson taking the two points on offer, before Miller settled matters.

France U19s head coach, Remi Casty, noted:

“The best team deserved their win. They made less mistakes than us, our discipline with and without the ball was poor and although we fought hard to come back, we left ourselves too much to do.”

Jamaica Schools Rugby League Championships

Calabar High won their fifth successive Jamaica Rugby League Association U14 Championship, beating The Cedar Grove Academy 18-14 in a pulsating Grand Final played at Campion College.

The match went into golden point extra time, Tevez Tulloch with his second try claiming the clinching score.

Amere Anderson and Jhaidan Williams also crossed for the victors, Laquan Burton, Christan Campbell and Shamar Cunningham replying for Cedar Grove.

Calabar coach Derone Davis said: “We are extremely proud of our performance.

Cedar Grove are a very good team and played a great match, they’d beaten us in the round robin stage and so we knew we had to dig deep in the finals.

We held our composure well in the second half and in extra time and it paid off.”

The U16s decider was also a hotly contested affair between Campion College and The Cedar Grove Academy, both of whom were seeking their first title.

Campion took an early first half lead through prop Ehinome Ehikhametalor, but Cedar Grove hit immediately through Tajay Brown.

The scores remained level until late in the second half when Ehinome crashed over for his second try which decided the contest 8-4.

“The boys worked hard throughout the season, and it all came together for them,” noted Campion coach Andrew Dixon.

“Our season was built on being able to defend well and that enabled us to overcome a very talented Cedar Grove outfit.

Overall, we are just happy to bring Campion its first U16 rugby league Championship, it means a lot to this team.”
