KIRWAN State High School’s senior team will be playing for more than the school’s honour when they take on Mackay State High School in the Aaron Payne Cup on Wednesday.

The side will be wearing special jerseys with a splash of purple as they show their support for the school’s LGBTIQA+ community.

A big crowd is expected for the match which kicks off at 12pm on Wednesday and hooker Hoani Harris, 17, explained just why the team was carrying out the initiative.

“The reason behind wearing purple is for Wear It Purple Day,” he said.

“Wear It Purple Day is this year on August 26. But we bought the initiative forward to do it this Wednesday, due to a big home game.

“So essentially the whole school will be out watching us and we’re representing the LGBTIQA+ community within Kirwan High.

“We are honoured to wear these jerseys and also just honoured to bring a voice to those that don’t have a voice and are unable to speak out.

“We just want make them feel more comfortable in the community around us and bring energy and real support to everyone.”

Fullback Vinjenzo Winterstein, 17, the brother of former Cowboys star Antonio, added: “We have students from all around the world, different countries, different cultures. We have a diverse community, and our aim is to be inclusive.

“It means a lot to us boys to be able to wear these jerseys for Wear It Purple Day, and to also help raise awareness for our LGBTQIA+ group which is called the True Colours.

“Not only does this give them opportunity to be included, but also gives a voice to those who don’t have one.”

After a mammoth seven-week break from football, coach Nathan Norford expected his Kirwan side to be tested by a Macaky State High School outfit who pushed polished cross-town rivals St Patrick’s in their last meeting.

With rust and fitness all in play, Norford admitted Kirwan’s run to the Aaron Payne Cup finals could hit a rocky start without a top effort.

“We’ve been focusing on making sure our individuals are up to standard with our fitness and individual skills,” Norford said.

“We needed to get together as a team to finetune things because term three is a big one for any schoolboy and we want to be on top of it from the start, if we can.

“(Mackay) is obviously a stronghold of rugby league in Queensland so we need to be on top of our game to make sure we can execute, because they look like a grinding team.”

The loss of centre Riwha Walden to a shoulder injury will be mitigated by the timely return of Cowboys-contracted Jerramaine Nean, who will slot into the right centre position seamlessly.

Wear It Purple Day was first started in Australia on October 15, 2010 and was founded by Katherine Hudson and Scott Williams.

Supporters wear purple to celebrate diversity and young people from the LGBTIQA+ community.

COWBOYS-contracted prop Henry Teutau was the toast of Ignatius Park College after scoring in the dying minutes to tie with arch-rivals Kirwan State High 22-all in the opening match of the 2022 Aaron Payne Cup.

With 10 NRL contracted players on the field split evenly between the side, the fixture was a rollicking testament to the bright future of North Queensland rugby league.

Teutau’s 67th minute charge brought about the first draw between these sides in a decade.

Not since Valentine Holmes last patrolled the backfield for Ignatius Park in 2012 for an 11-all draw has there been a closer match between these fierce rivals.

On the brightest stage stepped up Teutau, the hulking prop who has set his sights on an NRL debut for North Queensland.

With less than five minutes to play his gallop through the heart of the Kirwan defence erased a six-point deficit to equalise scores.

Ignatius Park halfback Matthew Turner could have blown the roof off Brothers Leagues Club had his ambitious left-footed field goal attempt from 40m out struck true.

Kirwan’s task to run 100m to score in their final set proved impossible.

The draw salvaged a frustrating afternoon for Ignatius Park, who let slip four opportunities inside Kirwan’s 10m zone with two knock-ons, an obstruction penalty and a double movement call.

The class of the blue-and-white middle forward trio of Teutau, Broncos-contracted Shibasaki and uncontracted Jamaine Stanley proved decisive in the comeback effort to draw and throughout the entire match.

Prop Stanley opened the scoring in the fourth minute when a superb no-look pass from hooker Diesel Jacobsen found the prop on fifth tackle, bamboozling the defence to deliver a clear run to the line.

Queensland Schoolboys representative Elekana Suavai, cutting an eerily-similiar figure to former Kirwan weapon Jeremiah Nanai, answered with a powerful four-pointer to wrestle back the lead 6-4.

Before Iggy Park could blink Kirwan were back celebrating when Suavai’s centre partner Rifa Walden burst through the line to extend the margin to 12-4 after 16 minutes.

There were ominous signs for Ignatius Park until another Cowboys-contracted flyer, winger Teke Meneulu, produced the highlight of the first half.

Sharp footwork and incredible breakaway speed produced an 80m runaway spectacular almost completed untouched by the defence.

Kirwan interchange hooker Braith Dowson’s opportunistic try took the half-time score to 18-10.

Izaya Leedie for Iggy and Terry Connors for Kirwan traded tries to set the stage for Teutau’s highlight-reel match-saver.

Multiple sets wore down the defence for Teutau to blast open a hole.

KIRWAN has drawn first blood in the Cowboys Challenge U15 competition, stopping an Ignatius Park College fightback in its tracks to prevail 26-10 at Jack Manski Oval.

The Bears were ruthless in punishing Iggy Park errors in a rivalry clash to open the new season, with classy Queensland junior represenatives Cohenn Dittman and Diesel Taylor leading the charge.

THE Aaron Payne Cup is back with a blockbuster schoolboy rugby league grudge match between Townsville rivals Ignatius Park College and Kirwan State High School set to ignite festivities on Wednesday afternoon.

The highly anticipated clash has been marked on both school calendars since pre-season began late last year, with a host of emerging stars set to play in front of Townsville Bulletin cameras for the first time.

Five NRL pathway products will take the field for the Kirwan Bears while another five will face them down in the blue and white of Ignatius Park.

It is the greatest concentration of junior footballing talent on one field in North Queensland at present, but only one player.

Kirwan centre Elekana Suavai, playing in his first derby match since transferring from Rockhampton’s The Cathedral College – has been selected to represent the Queensland Under-18s.

That rankles Broncos-contracted Jamal Shibasaki, who declared he and his teammates will harness their snubbings as fuel.

Shibasaki, Iggy’s co-captain and starting lock, and Cowboys-contracted prop Henry Teutau, are the twin-diesel engines powering the Ignatius Park pack.

Their charge off the back fence for the opening hit-up or tackle of the game will be even more seismic as they battle to prove to selectors tuning in to the Bulletin livestream they got it wrong leaving them out of the Maroons.

“I know me and a lot of the other boys who were in the NQ side know what we’ve got to do now,” Shibasaki said.

Shibasaki will take on the Bears for the second time in Aaron Payne Cup action at 4.45pm but is well-versed in the rivalry’s traditions.

His elder brother Gehamat was a star in Ignatius Park’s 2014 and 2015 teams, who graduated with a 1-2 record against the Bears.

“They told me how aggressive these games and how smart you need to play to win,” he said.

“Versing Kirwan is like a whole other level, you’re not just playing another game – this is the game you want to play and you don’t want to leave anything in the tank.”

Kirwan and Ignatius Park coaches Nathan Norford and Steve Lansley both agree.

“These are the matches the boys remember for the rest of their lives,” Lansley said.

The next generation of Aaron Payne Cup players will also tackle their rivals in the U15 Cowboys Challenge, a 3.30pm curtain-raiser that will also be live-streamed by the Bulletin.

The school rugby league season will end with a bang today when News Corp Australia live-streams three grand finals – including the Phil Hall Cup state final between Palm Beach Currumbin SHS and St Brendan’s College.

PLAYERS TO WATCH IN TODAY’S GRAND FINALS

Two of the great discovery players unearthed this season have been PBC SHS fullback Keano Kini and Tane Kiriona of St Brendan’s College.

Kini was signed by Gold Coast Titans before any of their talent scouts saw him play a league game live.

A year 11 student, Kini was actually signed after the Titans saw him playing tag (touch football) in his native Auckland.

The Titans were looking for a halve and had been tipped off about his ability, so the first chance talent scouts got to see him in the flesh was playing touch football – not rugby league.

The Titans had to move quickly, because two other NRL clubs were circling the then 15-year-old.

So the Titans sold their vision, and Kini signed which led him to coming to Palm Beach Currumbin SHS this season to “learn the Aussie way’’ and test himself in the elite Langer Trophy schoolboy environment.

“They (the Titans) talked to us about the pathways and we (the family) thought it was a good opportunity,’’ Kini said.

Kini said deciding to attend Palm Beach Currumbin SHS was made easier because PBC star centre Deine Mariner was a club mate of his at the Marist club in New Zealand.

In a late season master stroke by PBC SHS coach Tim Maccan, Kini reverted to a ball-playing extra half despite still wearing the No.1 jersey.

“They wanted me more involved on the line, basically another half on the line on the left side,’’ said Kini, the joint Justin Hodges Medallist player of the year alongside Chris Faagutu (Marsden SHS).

“I like five-eighth and will probably move into the halves next year, but I am enjoying both.’’

Like Kini, St Brendan’s Kiriona was a relative unknown prior to this season.

A middle powerhouse, Kiriona first raised eyebrows playing with the Central Capras in the Meninga Cup under 18 competition in March and April.

His mid field dominance helped Capras into the finals, and he continued that form for St Brendan’s in the Confraternity Shield and Aaron Payne Cup campaigns.

“He is a big mobile aggressive middle forward,’’ said St Brendan’s coach Scott Minto.

“Kiriona will be that strong presence holding up the middle third of the field.

“Look for him combining well with his fellow forward sidekick Noah Corcoran.’’

Palm Beach Currumbin SHS fullback Keano Kini and Marsden SHS lock and captain Chris Faagutu are joint winners of the Justin Hodges Medal for player of the year.

Kini capped a remarkable debut season in the Langer Trophy with another wholehearted performance in PBC SHS’s NRL Schoolboys Cup grand final victory over Marsden SHS on Wednesday.

Marsden SHS’s Faagutu was typically even-tempered and stoic on grand final day.

PBC SHS’s win means they will now play the winner of the northern conference, St Brendan’s College Yeppoon, who also won a last-gasp thriller of Kirwan SHS in yesterday’s Payne Cup grand final.

That match will be played on September 15, and will again be livestreamed by News Corp around the state, including www.couriermail.com.au, the Gold Coast Bulletin and through the Rockhampton region.

NRL Schoolboys Cup grand final dynamic duo: PBC SHS pair Tom Weaver Oskar Bryant meet in a birthing suite; Marsden SHS pair Jieye Maua’i and Chris Faagutu mates from way back.

It is little wonder Palm Beach Currumbin SHS pair Tom Weaver and Oskar Bryant seem to be able to read each other’s minds on the field – after all they were first together on the day Bryant was born.

Halfback Weaver and hooker Bryant will be two of the dynamic duos involved in today’s NRL Schoolboys Cup grand final to be played between Langer Trophy champions Marsden SHS and PBC SHS at Kougari Oval.

The three matches livestreamed by News Corps today will be:

— Caloundra SHS v Mabel Park (De Vere Cup, 12.30),

— Redcliffe SHS v Clairvaux MacKillop College (open Gee Cup, 1.45pm)

— Marsden SHS v PBC SHS (NRL Schoolboys Cup, 3pm).

Weaver and Bryant, both Gold Coast Titans signings, have had parallel lives since Weaver was in the birthing suite the day Bryant was born.

“My dad (Aaron) and his dad (Glenn) played footy together and my mum (Renee) and his mum (Joanne) went to school together,’’ Bryant explained.

“I have known him for 18 years this year, and have been playing footy with him since under 6s at Cudgen (northern NSW),’’ Bryant said.

“Every team we have made, we have played together.

“It (our combination) just comes naturally. I just look at him and the play he calls, I just put the ball straight on his chest.’’

Tom said: “We have been mates since we were born.

“We have just grown up in the same families basically – our families are still really close and that just led to us playing footy together since we were six-years-old.

“It really helps out on the field.

“He knows when I want the ball and there are times when I am not in the right position to get a kick away or put a play on and he will run it himself or kick it himself.

“We are instinctive – that we know what each other needs.’’

PBC SHS Tim Maccan said it was an uncanny association which reminded him of when he played with Brad Davis at both school (PBC SHS) and Intrust Super Cup (Seagulls) level.

PBC SHS five-eighth Michael Roberts said it was great playing alongside Weaver and Bryant.

“Tom directs the boys into the right place and Oskar is eyes up – he knows when to go at the right times,’’ Roberts said.

Marsden SHS also have their own version of Batman and Robyn – Jieye Maua’i and Chris Faagutu.

Both backrowers, the boys first met playing under 9s at Logan Brothers have enjoyed plenty of good times together wearing the Marsden SHS jersey.

“I remember training with him in under 9s and we got to know each other,’’ Maua’i said.

Maua’i said they had a great understanding of each other on the field.

“He leads by example and sets the standards for the middles and everyone in the team,’’ Maua’i said.

“And off the field he is a good person to know.’’

Faagutu said his mate Maua’i was a quiet achiever. “He works hard, tackles hard and achieves a lot.’’

St Brendan’s in Aaron Payne Cup and Cowboys Challenge finals

St Brendan’s College open team after their Aaron Payne Cup semi-final win over Ignatius Park.

St Brendan’s College will forge its own piece of rugby league history on Wednesday.

For the first time, their teams will feature in the grand finals of both the Aaron Payne Cup and Cowboys Challenge in the same year.

St Brendan’s play Mercy College Mackay in the CC final at 10am and Kirwan State High in the APC final at 11am, with both games livestreamed on this website.

The First XIII booked their place in the APC decider by beating Ignatius Park 22-16 last week. Watch the replay here.

First XIII coach Scott Minto said it was a great achievement, one which was testament to the rugby league program at the school and the people involved in it.

St Brendan’s will play Mercy College Mackay in the Cowboys Challenge final on Wednesday.

He said his players were excited for their chance to claim the APC crown.

“I said to the boys last night that we’re not going up there to come second,” he said.

“We’ll go in with the same attitude that we did last week and really work hard.

“The first 10 to 15 minutes will set the tone, and we want to show plenty of intent and let them know we’re there to play.”

Kirwan took the honours 31-12 in their pool game, and Minto said it was that meeting that helped steel St Brendan’s defence.

“We know what to expect – big bodies running hard, especially early in the game,” he said.

“Our forward pack will do a good job with Tane Kiriona and Brock Hinds leading the way.

“Our edges are really strong, and we’ll get some opportunities late in the game with our centres and wingers.

“We’ve got to stick tight and stay connected. If we do that, we will go a long way towards winning.”

St Brendan’s First XIII squad

Matthew Hill:

Broncos contracted and improving with every outing in the fullback role. In his first full year at the back, he’s a genuine strike player on any play the ball and will catch any lazy defender napping with his speed, balance and skill.

Kongasau Nona:

Hailing from Thursday Island, he has electric speed and a high level of skill to match. Look for him taking on tired forwards out of dummy half on every set.

Blayden Dodd:

Blayden is athletically gifted and has the uncanny ability to beat his defender one on one. With a fend to rival ‘GI’, Doddy (as the boys call him) will be looking for some early ball to test the opposition in this one.

Blake Anders:

With NRL clubs starting to circle, Blake has been a real eye catcher in 2021. With his tall build and strong carries, he is a handful to contain with his ability to slip the pass to his winger in space becoming his stock play.

Mackenzie Nixon:

Recently crowned Queensland Country under-17 representative, Mack has improved his game 100 per cent in 2021. Strong carries out of the back field and good finishing has him stationed at the top of the try scoring list in the APC 2021.

Jackson Miller:

The Barcaldine junior brings a cool head and a sharp passing and kicking game to the team. His ability to show and go and beat opposition was a real feature at Confro 2021 and has continued deep into the APC in Term 3.

Owen Pattie. St Brendan’s College First XIII squad

Owen Pattie:

Captain of the side in 2021, Owen is a constant threat to teams by mixing up his game and testing defense lines out every set. A half who plays with tempo and good game management, he will be a key figure if Brendan’s are to go on and win the APC this year.

Tane Kiriona:

Fresh after inking a new deal with the Canberra Raiders, Tane has been a revelation in 2021. Tall, aggressive with unbelievable leg speed for a middle forward, he ticks almost every box and will be rising up the ranks in years to come.

Quinn Stover. St Brendan’s College First XIII squad

Quinn Stover:

He started the season on the bench and when starting hooker Will Lasker did his shoulder prior to Confro, not many knew what Quinn was fully capable of. He’s grown immensely in the past 10 weeks and has stamped his mark on this team moving into the penultimate game Wednesday.

Brock Hinds:

Another who has gained a contract in the NRL system in 2022, Brock has taken his game to the next level with his hard runs, strong defence and work off the ball impressing the Broncos High Performance staff. He will need to match the big forwards from Kirwan if Brendan’s are to get home.

Ben Charles:

Has been in the top three for Brendan’s consistently every week this year. With his work rate off the charts and his line running and defence clean-up unfailing, Ben has helped a great deal with getting the team through to this game. Look for his influence to be huge.

Kealhan O’Brien:

The Blackwater product is fast, agile and tough. He takes the hard carries and is always sniffing around, looking for the ball. Look for his combination with Miller on the right to fire in the grand final.

Noah Corcoran: A skilful, rangy lock who can pass like the best halves and hit like the best middles. A great link man to the halves, Noah is doing a great job of steering the middles around in 2021.

Hoani Harris:

The youngest of the bunch at 16 – although you wouldn’t know it. Tough in both attack and defence, Hoani is renowned for his effort all round. He will play a big part in making sure the pressure stays on Kirwan throughout.

Filipe Buli:

Another up and comer in Year 11. Has grown in leaps and bounds this season. At 190cm and 98kg, he is the younger brother of 2019 First XIII player Ilami. Watch him tear into them when he’s unleashed after 15 minutes of this match-up.

Harrison Gray:

A member of the 2020 outfit, Harrison takes on a new role this year, coming off the bench and moving Owen Pattie up to nine during the half, which has paid dividends. His experience when it matters most will be drawn upon this Wednesday.

Sebastian Nona:

Another 16-year-old who has impressed the coaching staff with his natural game and power runs. He will feature plenty in the First XIII kit in the coming 12 months as he, too, is in Year 11 this year.

Kendrick Treadwell-Kendrick:

A wing/fullback who can cover other positions at a pinch. With a want to get the ball in his hands, Kendrick will be a positive influence wherever he is injected in this one.

Palm Beach Currumbin SHS were too good for Keebra SHS in the NRL Schoolboys Cup live and exclusive from Langlands Park on Wednesday.

Marsden SHS will play Palm Beach Currumbin in the NRL Schoolboys Cup grand final after the long arm of Marsden prop Xavier Stowers broke Ipswich SHS’s heart in a knockout semi-final thriller today.

Hulking prop Stowers scored three seconds from fulltime to snap a 10-all deadlock. Marsden SHS won 16-10. (Story below)

Marsden SHS then sat back and watched PBC SHS beat Keebra Park SHS 20-10 (story below).

BEST NEW FACES OF 2021

THE GAMES

PBC SHS iceman Tom Weaver and one of the competition’s best new faces Keano Kini delivered the goods to guide their team to a thrilling sudden death semi-final win over Keebra Park SHS in NRL Schoolboys Cup action.

Weaver engineered a critical try with an astute grubber kick 15 minutes from fulltime, and then fullback Kini blazed over to score after a rollicking run by Del Wigmore.

At that point PBC SHS were up 20-10, 10 minutes from fulltime after Keebra Park SHS had drawn level 10-all. That ended up the winning score.

Earlier in the half Keebra Park SHS No.6 De’ontae Perese produced two magic tricks in three minutes to hoist his side back into the semi-final.

The pulse of Keebra Park SHS quickened when lightning fast winger Elijah Lui swept onto a long pass by five-eight Perese to score minutes into the second half.

What a ball it was from Perese, who on the run put the ball wide to Lui who had out-flanked his rival, reducing the deficit to 10-4.

Then, off the back of an up tempo resurgence by Keebra Park SHS, the dancing feet of Perese beat the PBC defenders to score beneath the posts, making the score 10-all.

PJ Poutasi had announced himself after the break for Keebra Park, producing several inspiring runs to take his side forward.

Earlier, PBC’s blanket defence paved the way for a 10-nil first half lead.

The red and white swarm were all over Keebra Park SHS at both ends of the field.

The all-embracing defence led directly to PBC’s second try, an intercept effort by Jett Forbes as Keebra Park were trying to make headway out of their own end.

PBC’s defence, and Tom Weaver’s astute kicking game, applied the blow torch to Keebra Park.

Two thumping runs from Keebra Park prop Herman Tofaeono against the tide twice put his side onto the front foot, but both times PBC recovered.

Hooker Blake Mozer also tried to work PBC’s defenders over on attack ball, but the red and white wall stood firm.

Keebra Park SHS’s Arama Hau was a big threat close to the line with his strength and unloading skills, but nothing could breach the PBC line.

PBC opened the scoring early when Michael Roberts’ speed off the mark helped him squeeze over in the right hand corner.

Marsden SHS v Ipswich SHS

The extra long arm of Marsden SHS prop Xavier Stowers broke Ipswich SHS’s heart in a knockout semi-final thriller today.

Hulking prop Stowers scored three seconds from full time to snap a 10-all deadlock. Marsden SHS won 16-10.

The match seemed certain to plummet into extra time when Stowers, ironically an Ipswich Jets junior, surged one last time when all seemed lost, launching his 194cm frame head long at the try line, extending his arm to score.

After scoring the most important match-winning try of his schoolboy career, emotional Marsden State High forward Stowers just wanted to hug his family and friends.

“The boys did all the effort. I just finished it off,’’ Stowers said, receiving multiple hugs.

He thought he had knocked on before safely grounding the ball to the delight of the Marsden State High faithful.

When asked if that was the best try of his career, the towering forward left no doubt it was being circled for more hugs.

As Stowers prepared to join his jubilant teammates post game, head coach Matthew Hartigan was clearly relieved to escape with victory, especially after Marsden had beaten Ipswich 48-10 in the second round.

“We were just really poor today,’’ Hartigan said.

“You have got to give credit to Ipswich. They just hung in. They stuck with it. They were really gutsy.

“They showed up and showed why they should be in the finals.

“They were definitely a massive challenge for us.’’

It was a great final.

Ipswich surged back into the match 10 minutes from fulltime when left winger Ariki Wallace scorched over after a wide left shift against a 12 man defensive line.

Wallace’s try – one minute after Marsden five-eight Jarydn Stilinovich-Watene had been sin-binned – reduced Marsden’s led to 10-4.

Then from the kick-off centre Damien Burrows burst through, putting his hooker Tom Luhrmann sprinting between the posts.

Jake Self’s conversion raised a 10-all scoreline and set the scene for a grandstand finish.

Earlier, Ipswich State High’s quest to cause a massive NRL Schoolboys Cup upset suffered an early second half setback with Marsden halfback Cassius Cowley breaking into the clear to dash 40m to score from a charge down.

The competition leaders were looking to apply the blowtorch to Ipswich State High having built a 10-0 lead.

Hooker Tyree Bowman had earlier dived over close to the line capitalising on a penalty.

Teapo Stoltman’s successful conversion put Marsden up 6-0 heading into the break.

Late in the match, as both teams looked set for extra time, it was Stowers who made the most of last minute pressure.

“He really wanted the ball at the end there when the big moments were on the line,’’ Hartigan said.

Weaver Not The Only Halfback Star

Palm Beach Currumbin SHS champion No.7 Tom Weaver may have got his team over the line, but there was another little general who impressed in the fixture won late by PBC over Coombabah SHS 22-18.

Take a bow Coombabah SHS halfback Calebl Gould-Waiariki who pulled his side together and took them to the brink of victory. Gould-Waiariki helped his team lead 6-4 at halftime and then 18-10 with 10 minutes to go before Weaver’s try assist and solo try ripped the game away from Coombabah.

“He really stepped up,’’ said Coombabah SHS coach Sam Meskell in reference to Gould-Waiariki.

“He showed determination, he took control and showed great leadership. That influenced some of the other boys to step up as well.’’

Meskell said despite missing the upset of the season, it was a good test to show “where we really are’’ after a heavy loss to Wavell SHS in round 2, albeit with a depleted side. “To push PBC to such a close game and still have improvement left in us is a good thing.’’

Wavell Shs Are The Real Deal

Despite defeat, Wavell SHS proved they are the real deal against Marsden SHS. They must be, because Marsden SHS are the real deal in 2021 and Wavell went within a whisker of snatching a draw.

And there is so much improvement in them. There was too much drop ball, although conditions were very slippery.

Indeed if you’d had a bucket sitting on the sideline for the duration of the match, there would have been a centimetre or two of moisture settle. That, and the heavy contact in tackles, made ball handling difficult.

But Wavell has got what it takes. Ben Tu kuru is a welcomed addition from injury and dummy half Tyrell Waaka-Rhind, halves Jaylan Afamasaga and Karl Oloapu are super effective playing off the front foot.

Tuesday’s match could easily be a dress rehearsal for semi-finals ahead.

Another Ode To Mozer – And His Rookie Mate

Another round goes by, and another influential performance from gun hooker Blake Mozer whose control of the game is second to none. This time he stepped up to direct his team to a 24-6 win over Ipswich SHS who had closed the gap to 10-6 early in the second half.

Mabel SHS Making Progress

It was a case of close, but no cigar for Mabel Park SHS who wrestled tenaciously with St Mary’s for the duration of the game – only to go down 12-8. It was a big effort by the competition newcomers.

A trip up the range where primed opposition lay in wait, and a big penalty count against the home side does require a backs-to-the-wall effort to compete.

And compete they did. “My players were fantastic,’’ said coach Lee Addison. “All they did was defend for big chunks. It was two tries each and we have improved again.’’

There was frustration at some of the possession waved St Mary’s way, and one decision in particular to reverse a penalty given to St Mary’s because a knock-on had been detected prior to the infringement caused angst.

“It is so hard to win in those circumstances,’’ Addison said.

But the Langer Trophy is a school of hard knocks, and Mabel Park is taking the hard knocks and getting on with doing their jersey and community proud. “I am so happy with my boys.’’

Broncos Boy Nathaniel Shines For Marsden

He has been with the Brisbane Broncos since aged 15, and on Tuesday night Marsden SHS’s Nathaniel Tangimatatiti showed his community a glimpse of the best of him in a man of the match effort during Marsden’s win to maintain an unbeaten start to the season. Marsden held on to beat a fast finishing Wavell 18-12, a match they would not have won with their young side in 2020.

Tangimatatiti, a left centre or left edge backrower, is now three games into his career at Marsden SHS after moving from New Zealand last year. Family ties to Marsden SHS meant the young Kiwi was never going to go to any other school if he moved to Queensland.

He is a great addition to the side after getting miles into his legs playing centre for Jesse Maclean’s Meninga Cup under 18 side earlier in the year. I’ll tell you how well he is going – he keeping Eli Tuli out of the side and that is saying something.

Saints Show Some Steal

No Xavier Va’a again – no problem as St Mary’s College claimed a second home win over Mabel Park SHS. Well, there were some problems if we are honest because new chums Mabel Park were no push overs.

But Va’a, a three season veteran in the Langer Trophy, is St Mary’s front row battleship and forward leader and any side would miss him. Darcy Carswell, Luke Cesari and Zac Brown were also missing, so St Mary’s squad has been tested and wins over Wavell SHS and Mabel SHS show they have passed the test ahead of the break for exams and holidays.

Marsden SHS beat Wavell SHS in Rnd 3 of the Langer Cup

Langer Trophy title contenders Marsden SHS and Wavell SHS have played out a thriller in round 3 action.

Two title contenders went toe-to-toe tonight in a schoolboy classic won by Marsden SHS 18-12 over Wavell SHS.

In a thriller, Wavell SHS stormed the Marsden line after a fumbed ball had gifted them possession three minutes from time.

Wavell went left and right, then down the blindside and back again trying to find a way through.

Marsden SHS had a narrow win tonight.

Two successive penalties pushed them closer and closer, only to have big Wavell prop Felix Faatili lose possession in desperate defence. It was a pity because the big fella had a big impact on his team’s revival from an 18-6 deficit.

It was a ripping match which saw Marsden power game after the break carve a channel toward an 18-6 lead, only for Wavell to strike back when centre Tru Fotu put his winger Jordan Tut-Chapman over.

Trae Bennetto’s booming sideline conversion made it 18-12, 14 minutes from time and we had a grandstand finish to enjoy.

Off the back of Marsden’s big, mobile forwards coming onto Mako hooker Tyree Bowman’s passes, the home side looked most threatening.

But big Felix Faatili countered with his second coming for Wavell SHS, rallying his forwards with inspiring charges.

For five-eights Jardyn Stilinovich-Watene (Marsden) and Karl Oloapu (Wavell), it was a case of what you can do, I can do better after Stilinovich-Watene opened the second half with a stunning individual effort.

It was the mirror image of Oloapu’s sensational surge at the tryline in the first half which levelled the scores for Wavell.

Marsden were then able to score a second try of the half when Tea Rani Woodman blazed after a kick to get a touch first ahead of a desperate Wavell fullback Bennetto.

The score was 18-6.

On approach to the tryline halfback Cowley worked some nice inside balls to his runners, but it was a wide shift which almost saw winger Woodman cross – only to be denied by a sensational covering effort by fullback Trae Bennetto.

Both teams had the first half fumbles, and the first side to arrest its handling in the dew was always going to be the side most likely to hit the winners post first.

LANGER RESERVES

Marsden SHS second rower Eli Tuli powered his side to a narrow 18-12 victory over Wavell SHS this afternoon.

Tuli channelled former Marsden SHS player and now Broncos NRL up-and-comer TC Robati with an enormous individual performance.

It is little wonder the Marsden SHS Langer Trophy side is travelling well when you have someone like Tuli in reserves.

It was a tense climax to the match after a surging midfield try from roving Wavell winger George Henry-Monaei raised Wavell’s mast 11 minutes from fulltime after Marden had led 16-6.

Tuli almost produced the match clinching try with a rousing midfield run, but Wavell’s outstanding fullback Kallum Weatherall-Stacey’s saved the day with a tackle on Marsden hooker Joey O’Leary who had supported Tuli’s thrust.

A bullocking run from Marsden reserves captain Mou Taumaletila-Maulolo put Marsden SHS in front, giving his side a 12-6 advantage at the break.

And Marsden were first to score into the second half when Eli Tuli powered his way to the tryline.

Some creative play from Marsden SHS Dom Sandow almost engineered another Marsden try, but an inside pass went to ground.

Then a Tuli pass in a tackle to Sandow created a chance, but the pass was low and Sandow failed to handle off his right knee. But Marsden were heading in the right direction.

Earlier, the sheer pace of Kallum Weatherall-Stacey saved Wavell’s bacon after Jodeci Letalu had latched onto an intercept for Marsden SHS.

Letula was reigned in by Weatherall, forcing a pass to Haizyn Mellars who was cornered by Damon Coldwell.

Weatherall then used his pace two tackles later to run an attacking kick by Marsden’s Cody Hamilton dead over the dead ball line.

The game was only two minutes old when Wavell’s Sese Nati chased through a grubber kick which had been threaded behind the line to score.

Marsden responded with a lovely left passing movements across the backs, with Dom Sandow putting his winger Shane Rapson in to score.

Wavell SHS’s Hancock Cup winger (year 9) Kurt Jones landed this conversion from touch.

WALTERS CUP

Wavell SHS struck a blow across the bow of the home side with an impressive 22-14 Walters Cup win.

Hot on the heels of the Hancock Cup (Year 9s) victory earlier in the afternoon, Wavell came from a 8-4 halftime deficit to chip past their rivals and secure victory.

A converted try to halfback Lotu Salei eight minutes before full time aided Wavell’s recovery.

Wavell’s effort was again led by representative middle forward, the mobile Prestyn Laine-Sietu, but he had plenty of helpers.

Behind his pack Salei played a steady role, not over playing his hand or losing his head in a tight contest.

The game was put to bed six minutes from fulltime when dummy half Jai Camilleri went himself and scored.

This was after Marsden SHS prop Sani Ten inched his side ahead right on halftime when he scooped up a grubber kick to score next to the posts, but Wavell hit the front early in the second half when winger Riley Jenkins skidded over.

Salei’s booming sideline conversion carried his team to an 10-8 lead.

From the restart Marsden Lucas Miller and Mark Tuialli pulled off bruising big hits, but Wavell absorbed the punishment to kick themselves to safety.

Marsden SHS interchange forward Elijah Leatigaga gave his team a sniff three minutes from time with a charging try, but the better side won.

Both teams meant business, and a more even half of football you could not have imaged.

Camilleri (Wavell hooker) and Jacob Tinsley (Marsden) were a dangerous off the back of his forwards when they got rolling, but it was very much anyones game.

Earlier, Both teams traded tries across the first half.

Marsden SHS struck an early blow when Jacon Tinsley capitalised on his team’s territorial domination to dive over from dummy half four minutes into the clash.

Then Bailey Leech found his way to the tryline in the right hand corner and it was locked up 4-all.

HANCOCK CUP

Earlier, Wavell’s Oloapu mesmerised his opponents with his twinkle toes effort from 10m out which finished with him gliding over beneath the posts after subtly changing direction.

It was the type of classy effort one comes to expect from Oloapu who is in dashing form to start the competition.

The try came against the run of play after Marsden SHS had had the better of the territory advantage.

Marsden SHS looked dangerous, but some simple handling errors left their opponents off the hook.

Most dangerous was the left side raids where Tangimatatiti loomed, and there were attempts to get Will Semu into the game, but Wavell held firm.

However, Marsden’s next big chance came in the seconds leading up to halftime, but another handling error curtailed Marsden’s chances of scoring.

Earlier, big Xavier Stowers opened the scoring for Marsden SHS with a close to the line burst after his team picked up the tempo of the game and played their way down the field.

Off the back of left edge forward Nathaniel Tangimataiti Marsden SHS went on the attack again, with a deceptive kick from half Cassius Cowley going perilously close to bouncing into the hands of winger Tea Rani Woodman who had raced after the ball like a greyhound chasing a lure.

Wavell prop Felix Faatili, had also started well with some nice footwork and handling deceiving his rivals who may have expected a power game to start the match.

With round 2 of the Langer Trophy played yesterday, what were Six of the Best things we learnt to come out of the start of the 2021 elite schoolboy season?

At A Glance, Round Summary

At Wavell SHS, Broncos’ signed Karl Oloapu turned the ignition key as Wavell SHS hit back hard in the Langer Trophy tonight, rebounding from a first round loss to defeat Coombabah SHS 42-6.

In other matches, St Mary’s College felt the full force of as rampaging Palm Beach Currumbin SHS, going down 44-6.

The Marsden State High point scoring machine rolled over Ipswich State High in a powerhouse 48-10 victory at the North Ipswich Reserve.

And Keebra Park SHS got on the board for the season against a spirited Mabel Park SHS, winning 30-14 at Slacks Creek.

The Courier-Mail, Gold Coast Bulletin and News Corp Australia affiliates are live-streaming the Langer Trophy, Walters Cup and Langer Reserves games. That is at least 10-12 games each round – plus access to the Payne Cup on top of that.

WAVELL SHS BOUNCE BACK

Don’t poke the bear. St Mary’s College poked Wavell SHS in the stomach during an upset round 1 victory, and seven days later Coombabah SHS felt the full brunt of Wavell SHS on the rebound.

The scoreboard beamed 36-nil at halftime as Wavell five-eight Karl Oloapu turned the ignition key on for his side.

“It was a bit of a bounce back factor. We were disappointed with in round 1,’’ said coach Mick Roberts.

“We had Home Coming so the team was easy to motivate this week as it is an important game for our team.

The first half was outstanding but we just couldn’t hold it for the second half.’’

COOMBABAH SHS’S COURAGE

The ground is dewy, the scoreboard at Wavell SHS has never shone brighter for the home side – reading 36-nil. And there is a big Wavell crowd cheering on the locals. Coombabah found themselves in a pickle at halftime against Wavell last night.

So what are they to do? They showed plenty of ticker to draw the second half 6-all.

“The conversation at halftime was that it was probably our choice to go out and probably take some soft choices in the first half,’’ said Coombabah SHS coach Sam Meskell. “I told the boys at halftime – ‘it is your choice.

Do you want to go out again and do that, or do you want to make a battle of’? And we did that. I was proud of that. There are times when we could have easily conceded but we dug in.’’

MABEL PARK SHS METTLE

Langer Trophy newcomers Mabel Park SHS were also faced with another steep climb, but choose to defiantly scratch out a foothold instead of slipping last night against Keebra Park SHS. Coming off the disappointment of a round 1 loss to Coombabah after a big debut build up, Mabel Park showed plenty of fortitude in a 14-30 loss.

“We were up to our eyes in it. I am super proud of my team,’’ said coach Lee Addison. He said he demanded a response and he got it.

Addison it could have been even better with better decision making, but Keebra were more used to playing in that standard of football. “But I am super proud and if we continue to play like that, we deserve to be at this level,’’ he said.

Te Kani Shnies – With A Little Help From Blake Mozer

Keebra Park SHS dummy half Blake Mozer was at it again – along with Connor Te Kani who engineered early success for his side, which must have been reeling after a savage first round loss.

They combined in lead-up play for the first Keebra Park try after the side had found themselves 8-nil behind. Te Kani then had another try assist while Mozer broke the line, drew and passed for his team’s third try. Te Kani kept Keebra Park’s recovery going with a cut out pass to create a try three minutes into the second half to continue his team’s recovery.

The Boys Are Back In Town For PBC

The big guns were back as PBC SHS unleashed on St Mary’s College. Halfback Tom Weaver was at the helm and centre Deine Mariner in the eight try performance. Hunter Ploegsma and Michael Roberts both crossed for two tries as PBC imposed themselves on the opposition – and all seven teams across the competition.

Marsden Shs’s Blitz – Again

Last week Marsden SHS produced a 26-nil blitz of Keebra Park SHS on the way to winning 36-nil. Last night it was a 38-nil in a first half avalanche against Ipswich SHS. With halfback Cassius Cowley the ringmaster, Marsden ramped up in attack in another warning to the competition.

Cowley really came on this season, first under the coaching of former Marsden SHS coach Jesse Maclean while playing for the Wynnum Seagulls in Meninga Cup, and now under Marsden coach Matt Hartigan.

Like Coombabah against Wavell, Ipswich SHS players bit down hard on their mouth guards at halftime to limit the damage in the second half – much to the credit of the home side. But the damage was done.
