Young Sharks impress in Wests trials

Pushing through sweltering conditions, the young Sharks showed promise in their respective trials on Saturday as they continued to build steam ahead of the junior representative seasons.

The scoreboard was an afterthought, with the coaches again deploying extended squads and testing various combinations, but the results were as follows:

Sharks 4 tries lost to Wests 5 tries

There remains room for improvement, namely in the way of rectifying unforced errors and ill-discipline, but coach Brad Kelly was largely happy with what his players produced.

“There were definitely some patches where we were better and … we were able to execute in some parts of the game,” Kelly said.

“I reckon the heat and fatigue definitely played a factor there as well for both teams … It was a chance to get them all on the field and playing again.

“It’s a bit of a balancing act between giving everyone enough time to play but also trying to build combinations as well.”

Sharks 4 tries drew with Wests 4 tries

Up against a physically imposing, hard-running Wests outfit, the Sharks didn’t shirk their task. Cohesion is still building, with many players pulling on the club’s jersey for the first time on Saturday, but the signs are positive.

“It’s another week of work and education for the boys and hopefully we progress and get better next weekend and then ready for round one,” coach Dave Howlett said.

Despite being slightly down on numbers with some players still on holiday, coach Robbie Taylor was pleased with his team’s commitment, particularly without the ball.

“Really proud of how we went out there,” he said.

“We worked a lot in pre-season on defence and we showed we can go alright defensively when it matters. Tigers are a big side, a lot of energy, so we had to aim up.”

Coach Isaac Michael was delighted that his squad competed hard and maintained their communication under fatigue in the heat.

“Once we got into our rhythm, worked on our roles and worked hard for each other with our push-support, we got that ruck moving and the game became a little bit easier for us,” Michael said.

“We’ve got that mentality where we’re always pushing for each other and always ready to take the next carry. We’re working hard for each other the whole game.”

Sharks 4 tries drew with Macarthur Wests Tigers 4 tries

After a hot start, the Sharks somewhat faded as the contest wore on. While the Sharks used around 20 players, their opponents played a fresh team in each third.

“I thought overall we did OK. Our first 20 (minutes) was our best and we played really well, controlled the field position and the ball,” coach Paul Gallen said.

“After that, we didn’t play that well, to be honest. We made a lot of silly errors, a lot of poor discipline and they came right back into it.

“It was a good test for them. They were a big, strong team, Wests, and they had some good skill … It was a good game.”

Under 18s Academy (men)

Sharks 7 tries beat Macarthur Wests Tigers 3 tries

It was a case of nailing the basics as the under-18s Academy team impressively dictated terms for the majority of the contest.

“We went well. The boys played good, simple footy, the ‘run hard’ and ‘tackle hard’ was strong all game, and they backed that up with a good kick-chase as well,” coach Jared Starr said.

“They just won the momentum battle of the game … They just did all the little things really well. I thought the effort was really good in this heat.”

Magpies tough run to finals

Young Magpies outfit prepares for intense run home on the way to the SG Ball Cup finals

A youthful Western Suburbs Magpies SG Ball side is coming off its biggest win of the season, and while they’re not getting swept up in the hype, they want to make another statement against Newcastle.

THEY’VE endured one of the toughest SG Ball Cup draws to date, and life doesn’t get any easier for the Western Suburbs Magpies.

After spending the last fortnight on the road, they return home this weekend for another blockbuster clash against second-place Newcastle on Saturday in round six action.

Sitting in third position themselves, Wests recovered from a 40-12 hammering in Canberra, to knocking off Penrith and ending their unbeaten run.

”It caught us off guard,”

“That was a shock to the system (against the Raiders). It caught us off guard,” coach Joey Saukuru said.

“We turned it around last week and did quite well I thought. We led 12-10 at the break and that lead changed in the second half three or four times.

“We played the second half for 20 minutes with just 12 players. It was a big effort with two of our middles sent to the sin bin. We had to shuffle our players, but it was as gutsy effort as they come.”

What makes that effort even more impressive is the youth within this Magpies team, with half of their squad and a majority of the starting side eligible to compete in the U19s again next year.

“I was recapping and realised in our starting 13 we had seven guys a year young,” he said.

“They’re learning a big role and they see that rise in level of football from Harold Matts.

“They know they’re in for it physically and in terms of football smarts, but to claw that one back is a good learning experience and for their development.

“We took that Canberra game as a lesson learned, to get back on the horse and get on with the job. Mature has been a key word for us this year.”

That maturity will need to be on show against the Knights at Campbelltown, their third successive game against an opponent starting the round in a top-three position.

Saukuru said it was too early to think about premierships just yet, with a challenging run home before the finals commence.

“It’s good to be back at home this week, and we know they’re going to be a tough opponent,” he said.

“We’re really looking to be consistent with our performance from last week, and we want to really get up for it and put our best foot forward.

“Our draw is really tough. We have Newcastle, then the Bulldogs which is always a close one. Norths are no longer the Norths of old, and then travelling to New Zealand. That’s as tough a draw as you can get.

“This week is a big one, knowing the calibre of the Knights and how they travel every year.”

In what shapes as a must-win clash for both sides, the seventh-placed Magpies take on the Knights in Harold Matthews, who sit one spot below them.

With just four rounds of play to go before the post-season, a loss could very well put an end to the finals aspirations of one team.

NSWRL junior reps: Full wrap, results, gallery from Matts, Ball, Tarsha Gale Cup round four

With four rounds of the Harold Matthews, SG Ball and Tarsha Gale Cup in the books, catch up on the 20 major talking points from the weekend, PLUS every result and our 50+ photo gallery.

A MASSIVE round of junior reps action saw competition leaders stamp their authority, unbeaten streaks ended and some upset results as well.

Take a look at what made headlines from a massive round four of the NSWRL junior reps season.

BALMAIN FINDING ITS FEET

The Tigers have won their past two and have put themselves into finals contention in SG Ball.

The manner they’ve gone about it would impress officials the most, hanging in games and winning them at the death.

They were there to be beaten even after they scored the final try, but held solid in some good signs for the road ahead.

NOT PANIC STATIONS FOR THE BULLDOGS… YET

Canterbury has now dropped its past two SG Ball Cup games, but a strong for and against has them still sitting in seventh.

Their next two games are must win however, because their run home is among the toughest in the comp.

In their last three weeks they will face Wests, the Warriors and Penrith, all on the road.

ROOSTERS, STEELERS GAME OF THE YEAR?

The SG Ball clash between the Roosters and Steelers had just about everything.

Stunning tries, big leads, bigger comebacks and a late finish that sent both teams home with a point.

The two played out the first draw for the season, and while it will dent their finals hopes, it was spectacular viewing for the netural.

KNIGHTS PUT SOUTHS TO THE SWORD

Newcastle tuned up for their blockbuster against the Warriors with a dominant win over South Sydney.

They’ve been clinical in their two home games so far this year to set up the second best for and against in the competition, keeping them in fourth spot.

What was most impressive was how quickly they were able to put the game away.

WARRIORS FIND LATE TO REMAIN UNBEATEN

New Zealand had to dig deep on their home soil against a winless and desperate Dragons side, but they did just that.

Trailing by two inside the final 10 minutes, their centres proved too much for St George to handle, with Patrick Moimoi and Sialetili Faeamani getting across the stripe.

They remain deep in the finals hunt and still have a game in hand.

COMEBACK OF THE YEAR?

South Sydney looked destined for their third-straight defeat to start the Harold Matthews season trailing 22-6 at halftime.

Whatever was said in the sheds from coach Luke Deller worked wonders.

They scored three tries in the space of 16 minutes after the break, including what would prove to be the matchwinner from captain Daniel Lua, to get on the board in season 2023.

SHARKS REDISCOVER THEIR BITE

After a tough outing against the Roosters last week, they got their revenge on the Central Coast variety.

Cronulla was in full control from the outset in a seven-try effort that keeps them in a lofty ladder spot.

Xavier Singh scored a hat-trick and provided some incredible acrobatics in the process out on his wing.

STEELERS KEEP SEASON ALIVE IN DRAMATIC FASHION

It was a wild day at Morry Breen Oval on the Central Coast with three incredible games, perhaps the Harold Matts clash provided the most drama.

Illawarra was cruising at 20-6 with less than 10 minutes remaining and an extra player on the field due to a sin bin.

Two late Roosters tries kept them on their toes however to set up a grandstand finish, which would ultimately be secured with Tom Kirk.

BULLDOGS UNLEASH ON BEARS

Canterbury wasn’t in a charitable mood coming off the back of their maiden Harold Matts loss of the season.

Five first half tries against the Bears put the game out of reach very early of the visitors at Belmore Oval.

It’s that clinical nature that has them sitting in second and a definite hope of higher honours in the U17s comp.

STEELERS GIVE ROOSTERS A REAL FIGHT

For the first time in 2023 the Roosters Indigenous Academy faced a stern test in the Tarsha Gale Cup.

Illawarra led with less than 15 minutes to go in the contest, keeping their opponents scoreless in the process.

The class of the Roosters shone through however, with two late tries taking their record to a perfect 4-0, with both the best attack and defence in the competition.

DRAGONS GET REWARD FOR EFFORT

No team deserved their first win more than the St George Dragons Tarsha Gale side.

They were beaten at the death in round two and had to settle for a draw last week.

The Dragons opened up a big lead against Cronulla and despite some nervous moments, held their nerve to get the two points they both needed and had earned.

PANTHERS TURN THE CORNER WITH GUTSY DEFENCE

The 34-16 scoreline suggests Penrith eased past Manly to record their first Tarsha Gale Cup win of the season.

It couldn’t be any further from the truth. The Panthers earned their attacking stripes the hard way in a chaotic six minutes before the break.

Up by six, first the Penrith girls held-up wrecking ball Monica Fasavalu-Fa’amausili, then did the same to Wanita Leatherby, before try-bound prop Tafao Asaua was forced into error.

Set to face the struggling Tigers next week, Penrith are one to watch.

RAIDERS SEND A CLEAR MESSAGE

After three weeks on the road, the Raiders returned home with a bang.

Victories against the formidable Magpies in the Matts and SG Ball leave both outfits undefeated at the top of the table.

MATTS DRAGONS CAN’T TAKE A TRICK

The Harold Matts Dragons can’t take a trick. Stuck in 14th after four straight defeats, they’ve proven they can match it with the best in the competition.

In round three they were level with a strong Penrith at half-time, and on the weekend against Parramatta they went to the sheds at 12-all.

From there it quickly unravelled. Omar Dennaoui spent time in the sin bin, and by the time the centre returned Parra had shot clear 24-12.

HAROLD MATTS CONGESTED AT THE TOP

Wests headed to Canberra as frontrunners, now with one loss against their name they’ve slipped down to fourth spot.

Sitting alongside five other sides with three wins and a loss, they’re in good company as the battle for top spots heats up.

ANOTHER TOP OF THE TABLE CLASH FOR BELCONNEN

The big games continue at Belconnen in the SG Ball.

After knocking off the previously undefeated Magpies, Canberra are back on home turf in round four in another top of the table clash, this time against the unbeaten Parramatta Eels.

CLASSY PANTHERS DEFY THE ODDS

Down 20-6 in the second half at Brookvale, Penrith’s unbeaten start to the SG Ball season was on the rocks.

They eventually defied the odds storming home to win 30-20, but it was the brilliance of No.7 Luke Hanson and winger Nick Murphy that saw them turn the corner.

In a short side raid, Hanson sliced through with a show-and-go before Murphy who did the rest. A silky in-and-away left the fullback stranded, and his classy four-pointer put Penrith on the road to recovery.

YOUNG EELS WINGER DINING OUT

Lorima Rokosuka picked up a double in the Eels’ Harold Matts win over the Dragons, making it three straight weeks where the winger has crossed the stripe.

Just as capable on the left or right edge, the youngster is fast making a name for himself as a quality finisher.

TARSHA RAIDERS HAVE PLENTY OF STRIKE

In round three Georgia Willey lit up Brookvale with two tries to help open the Raiders’ season account.

The Australian Schoolgirls fullback repeated the feat against the Tigers, but was topped on the score sheet by centre Lara Cosgrove who shredded Wests’ defence on the way to scoring an impressive hat-trick.

BEARS NOT FAR OFF THE PACE

Despite sitting in eighth spot on the Tarsha Gale ladder with a draw and two losses, North Sydney’s first win can’t be far away.

If defence wins matches, then the Bears are on the right track. They’ve only conceded 46-points, the fourth least in the competition.

ROUND FOUR WRAP + GALLERY

AS we approach the midway point of the NSWRL junior reps season, round four has seen some big movers and shakers across all competitions.

Catch up on all the action so far from a huge weekend of rugby league:

TIGERS CAUSE BOILOVER AT BELMORE

LATE brilliance from co-captain Josh Feledy has lifted the Balmain Tigers to an upset 20-16 win over Canterbury at Belmore Oval in the SG Ball Cup.

With scores tied at 16-all and under seven minutes left of play, a magical flick pass from the centre to his outside man William Malloy saw him cross in the corner to wrestle back the lead.

It wasn’t game over though, with a regathered short kick-off giving the Bulldogs a golden opportunity to snatch victory late in the piece.

But it was to be Balmain’s day, holding solid when it counted to give them consecutive wins after starting the year 0-2.

Feledy praised the way his forwards were able to match it with their Canterbury counterparts, and how they’ve been able to turn their season around.

“They’re a big pack the Bulldogs and we stuck in there right until the last minute and got away with the win,” Feledy said.

“We always spoke during the pre-season that we only played one trial game, and we wanted to build throughout the season itself.

Now we’ve got two wins on the trot

“Now we’ve got two wins on the trot. That’s a great win for us boys and we’ll take that into next week.”

Feledy is one of the young talents of this Tigers side, and looks set to graduate up to Jersey Flegg level at the conclusion of the U19s year.

“I’ve been a bit slow the first couple of games but picked it up today,” he said.

“I’m really focusing on what I need to do for the team and not really as an individual.

“Definitely hoping to move up to Flegg and then see what happens at the end of the year. But I’m just loving my footy here at the moment.”

In what was a game of changing fortunes, the Tigers struck inside the opening two minutes and opened up a 10-point lead midway through the first half when Feledy touched down in the 18th minute.

The Bulldogs struck back however, scoring the next two and hitting the front with 23 minutes left to play.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom for Canterbury on their home turf however, with their Harold Matthews Cup side scoring a big 44-8 win over North Sydney.

The Bulldogs raced the clock throughout the first half and opened up a commanding 28-4 advantage through the opening 30 minutes.

Halfback Mitchell Woods was strong again, posting two tries and a personal tally of 20 points.

PANTHERS RUN HOT WINNING ALL THREE AT BROOKVALE

An outstanding first half defensive effort paved the way for Penrith to outclass Manly 34-16 in an entertaining Tarsha Gale clash.

Chasing their first win of the season, Penrith overcame a massive Manly middle on the way to a comprehensive seven tries to three victory.

Returning after missing last week, towering Sea Eagles prop Tafao Asaua threatened to dominate from the get-go, barging over for her third try in as many starts to open a 6-4 advantage.

After regaining the lead at 10-4, Penrith then withstood raid after Manly raid, holding the ball over the line on three separate occasions in a challenging six-minute workout.

The reward came on the stroke of halftime, when a Montana McLean bust was finished off by five-eighth Taya Lazare.

Trailing 14-6, Manly made a hash of the second half restart allowing Penrith’s exciting speedsters to spring into action. Centre Bella McEachern scored the first of four Penrith second half tries that included a double to Piper Spackman.

In the Harold Matts, the young Panthers were never headed in winning their third straight game, a 24-18 win over Manly.

The Sea Eagles scored first through centre George Mapuilesua, but with five of the next six tries including a double to Cameron Bamblett, Penrith jumped clear 24-10 with 15 minutes still to play.

The home side rallied, and a couple of consolation tries saw them finish within six-points at the final siren.

Penrith extended their unbeaten run to four games

In the SG Ball, Penrith extended their unbeaten run to four games, but it was anything but one-way traffic against a committed Sea Eagles.

The 30-20 win sees Penrith jump to third on the ladder. For the winless Sea Eagles it was a case of what might have been.

Manly fired out of the blocks with a blistering three-try opening to lead 14-0.

And another to hooker Jake Fulton saw them head to the sheds up 20-6 an in total command.

The change of ends sparked the Panthers, prop Luron Patea finishing with two tries as the Penrith boys stormed to victory with five unanswered second-half tries.

RAIDERS’ GOLDEN HOMECOMING

In a battle of the unbeaten Harold Matts heavyweights, Canberra jumped to top spot on the table after clipping the Magpies’ wings 28-14.

On home turf for the first time this season, Raiders centre Harry Hudson had the locals cheering with the opening try in just the third minute.

Wests’ reply was swift, and the reigning premiers led 10-6 after 15 minutes following back-to-back tries to winger Ali Hicham Karnib and skipper Luke Laulili’i.

From there, it was all Canberra. After wrestling back the ascendancy, the Raiders then went on a points blitz of their own, scoring four unanswered tries either side of the interval to open an unassailable 28-10 lead.

In another clash of two undefeated frontrunners, the SG Ball Raiders flexed their muscles with a comprehensive 40-12 demolition of the highly touted Wests Magpies.

Classy backrower Jaxon Lavender had a day

Classy backrower Jaxon Lavender had a day to remember, he crossed twice on a day that saw playmaker Keahn Skipps finish with a personal 16-point haul.

In a fiery ending, with five minutes remaining and down 30-12, Wests lost Zakauri Clarke and Tallyn Da Silva to the sin bin.

With a two-man advantage, Canberra rubbed more salt into the Magpies’ wounds closing out the afternoon with a further two tries.

In a one sided Tarsha Gale clash, Canberra swept aside the Wests Tigers 44-4 in a Belconnen masterclass.

On what proved to be a magic day for the Green Machine’s speedsters, Lara Cosgrove crossed in the first half as the home side jumped to a 10-0 lead.

In an eight tries to one rampage, Cosgrove notched a well deserved hat-trick in the final minute of the match, while star fullback Georgia Willey crossed for a double of her own in Canberra’s second straight win.

For the Tigers, the loss rounded out a tough fortnight where they’ve conceded 70-points and scored only one try.

RABBITOHS COMEBACK HIGHLIGHTS MIXED DAY

The Rabbitohs produced one of the comebacks of the junior reps season to knock off Newcastle at Kurri Kurri.

Trailing 22-6 at halftime, South Sydney hit back with three unanswered tries to pick up their first win of the Harold Matthews season 24-22.

Their three tries came in a 12-minute span in the second half, with captain Daniel Lua’s 46th minute touchdown proving the difference.

They couldn’t replicate the feat in the SG Ball Cup however, with the Knights running out 42-4 winners.

Back-to-back tries to Jayden Harris and Elijah Salesa Ieaumoana gave them a 14-0 lead at the break that the visitors were unable to overcome.

Ethan Ferguson brought up his double, before Jayden Harris came off the bench and scored a hat-trick to cap off the big win.

Newcastle maintained pace with the top Tarsha Gale Cup teams after downing Souths 22-6.

Yilara Widders struck first for the Rabbitohs after just three minutes, but that is where the joy would end, as the Knights struck twice on both sides of halftime to keep their good form in 2023.

EELS’ KELLYVILLE HAT-TRICK

The junior Eels had a day out at Kellyville, finishing in front in all three grades.

The Tarsha Gale girls kicked off the day with a hard-fought 16-6 win over the North Sydney Bears.

With both sides coming off a last start draw, it was no surprise to see the scores locked at six apiece just minutes before the break.

Bears centre Grace-Lee Weekes crossed to level the scores in the 21st minute, following an early try to Eels backrower Kalisi Mahe.

But it was Parra’s super-sub Nella Lima who proved the hero, planting the ball over the line just before the interval to open a handy six-point buffer.

North Sydney had a golden chance to counter after the break, but with Eels centre Caitlin Peadon in the sin bin they came away empty-handed.

Siulolovao Vave officially shut the door on a Bears comeback, the winger’s late try enough to round out Parra’s second victory of the season.

In the Matts, Parramatta had to wait until after halftime before overcoming a depleted Dragons 36-12.

The winless Saints ran in three unconverted tries

The winless Saints ran in three unconverted tries to match Parra 12-all in an enthralling opening stanza.

But their hopes began to unravel two minutes after halftime with the dismissal of Omar Dennaoui to the sin bin.

During the centre’s absence, Parra try sneak Lorima Rokosuka bagged a double as the Eels shot clear 24-12. Another two tries saw the Eels ice an emphatic third straight win.

Parramatta have extended their unbeaten run in the SG Ball competition to four after they comfortably accounted for the Bears 44-12.

Hooker Matthew Arthur and fullback Te Hurinui Twidle crossed early for the blue-and-gold’s before Norths levelled at 12-all following tries to Malakye Enasio and Emmet Nicholls.

The second half was all Parra. Te Hurinui Twidle added another two tries as the relentless Eels piled on another six.

Arthur grabbed a double, while with six conversions and a try, five-eighth Ethan Sanders finished with 16-points as the Eels jumped to second place on the ladder.

ROOSTERS, STEELERS SHARE SPOILS

The Steelers gave the Roosters Indigenous Academy their toughest test to date in the Tarsha Gale Cup, but ultimately it wasn’t enough, going down 12-6 on the Central Coast.

Mia-Rose Walsh gave the visitors the perfect start with a try in the second minute in a low-scoring first half.

The Roosters finally cracked it in the 48th minute through Eliza Lopamaua, before Skyla Adams sealed the result with seven minutes to play.

Illawarra was able to hit back in the Harold Matthews however, fending off a late Roosters charge to prevail 24-18.

The Steelers looked to be in cruise control with 10 minutes to play, leading by 14 points and with the Roosters reduced to 12 men with Brandon Beetson sent to the sin bin.

Toby Rodwell and Zach Fittler had other ideas, helping them back to 20-18 inside the final four minutes, before Steelers fullback Tom Kirk extinguished the comeback.

In one of the games of the season, the SG Ball sides couldn’t be split, with the Roosters and Steelers tied at 24-all.

The home side struck first and opened up a big 18-0 lead after 40 minutes, before three tries in nine minutes had Illawarra back on level pegging.

Ethan Roberts gave the Roosters the lead once again, but it was Jett Liu who spoiled the party and salvaged a point with six minutes remaining.

CRONULLA HITS BACK HARD

Cronulla is back on track in the Harold Matthews Cup following a surging 36-6 defeat of the Central Coast Roosters at home.

The writing was on the wall with Kaden Gardner scoring inside a minute, and the Sharks taking a comfortable 16-0 lead at the break.

That was extended further after halftime, and when winger Xavier Singh brought up his hat-trick, the result was safely in their keeping.

Rookie Report, we take a look at the nib Newcastle Knights players developing in the SG Ball Cup, Harvey Norman Tarsha Gale Cup and Harold Matthews Cup competitions.

The junior representative sides had an action-packed day at Cessnock Sports Ground last Saturday with the boys sides tackling the Western Suburbs Magpies while the Tarsha Gale side clashed with the Wests Tigers.

See how each team fared:

SG Ball Cup

The SG Ball side made it two wins from two to the start the year after coming out victors in a high-scoring affair.

The team won 34-26 with Paul Bryan scoring a last minute four-pointer to take the points.

The Magpies crossed first before Chris Vea’ila and Myles Martin put the Knights in front.

The sides traded points for the majority of the game with Fletcher Sharpe, Noah Nailagoliva and Luke Pietzner getting over the stripe for the red and blue.

The Magpies looked to have won the game after scoring in the 64th minute before the Knights came up with the try in the dying stages to seal a sensational victory.

Tarsha Gale Cup

On the reverse side of a last-minute try, the Tarsha Gale Cup team narrowly went down to the Wests Tigers 16-14.

The Tigers scored first in the final game of the day at Cessnock before Shanti Evans and Matilda Jones crossed just before half-time.

The Knights held a 14-6 lead at one stage when Tori Brazier scored, however that is where the scoring would stop for the home side.

The Tigers rallied late to score two tries including one with two minutes to play to snatch victory.

The Knights side will look to respond when they take on the South Sydney Rabbitohs next Saturday in Sydney.

The Macarthur Conference rugby league competition will launch in 2022 off the back of substantial Junior rugby league growth in junior development in the South Western Sydney region.

The Conference set up will have Wests Tigers Macarthur Junior Rugby League, Group 6 Junior Rugby League and Group 6 Senior Rugby League all play in combined competitions from under 13 to first grade.

Aim of the new structure is to continue building the foundation for future growth in the area and pathways through to Wests Tigers in the NRL.

The club says that despite having consecutive seasons affected by Covid, Wests Tigers Macarthur and Group 6 competitions enjoyed a healthy rise in participants throughout 2021 by almost 10 percent.

Biggest improvement was in the 13 to 15-year-old range.

At a schoolboys level, Picton Magpies junior Aaron Keppie and Liverpool Catholic Club junior Luke Laulilii, pictured, will both move into the 2022 Harold Matthews team for Western Suburbs Magpies.

Both boys had strong individual seasons that culminated in them winning selection in the NSW Schoolboys merit team.

Finishing the regular season in the top four, the entirety of the Magpies’ Harold Matthews spine and lock are also all eligible for the competition again in 2022.

In more positive news, Wests Tigers said that there were more than 500 applicants for the 2022 Harold Matthews and SG Ball trials in the South West.

And to strengthen its junior development network experienced new coaches have been brought in to the development structure.

Matt Betsey (Head of Pathways), Brett Kimmorley (Pathways Coaching), David Fauonuku (JRL Coaching) and Kate Mullaly (Wellbeing) have recently joined the likes of Paul Sironen (Balmain JRL), Shannon Gallant (Wests & Group 6 JRL, pictured.) and Fita Hala (Talent ID) in delivering the next generation of Wests Tigers talent.

The club says the return of Tim Sheens from England will add further experience and knowledge to the pathways program.

The club says it is also continuing to invest in a number of talented coaches in South Western Sydney, such as Robert Mears, Joey Saukuru, Leon Bott, Joe Galuvao and Nathan Lakeman.

Wests Tigers also enjoy a strong partnership with St Gregory’s College and base the two Western Suburbs junior representative programs from the school with full access to fields, gym, recovery pools, rehabilitation and video review rooms.

As the 2022 season approaches, the club’s annual Brydens Lawyers Wests Tigers Academy continues to operate virtually with a digital execution of the weekly programs for the club’s elite juniors.

The elite group of U/17s and U/19s players from Balmain, Wests and Group 6 regions started the annual academy at the beginning of June prior to lockdown restrictions before adjusting the program to virtual platforms throughout August and September.

A select number of those players will then transition into the 2022 pre-season in November with Wests Tigers as well as their respective junior representative commitments.

Manly Warringah Sea Eagles moved into the NSWRL Harold Matthews Cup Grand Final with a 32-12 win over the Western Suburbs Magpies at Leichardt Oval today.

The Sea Eagles will now play arch rivals Parramatta Eels at Leichhardt Oval in the season decider at 1pm on Saturday, May 1.

Manly centres Eli Sagala and Josh Feledy each grabbed two tries as their side ran away with a 20-point victory, showcasing their skills and dominance which sees them remain undefeated.

After a shaky start from both sides with a handful of errors and penalties, Manly struck first in the sixth minute with Sagala diving over for an easy try. Back-rower Dylan Coutts held the ball up perfectly before putting the pacey centre through a gap for the first try. Hooker TJ Herring missed the conversion from the sideline for a 4-0 lead.

The Magpies attempted to get themselves in good field position through their kicks but winger Calvin Levy and fullback Lehi Hopoate were safe under the high ball, defusing the plays as the game continued.

Halfback Rory Morgan, who was filling in for Ollie Cummins, stepped up to place a smart grubber kick through as he forced a repeat set in the 13th minute. Barnstorming runs from props Samuela Fainu and Raymond Lole brought the Sea Eagles another opportunity, but the Magpies’ goalline defence kept them in the game.

Second-rower Drew Williams made a one-on-one strip 40 metres out four minutes later as the Manly side continued with their attack. Captain Josh Feledy was close to scoring on the left edge but was unfortunately held up.

The Magpies made their way downfield for lock Solomone Saukuru to crash over in the 21st minute to score. Fullback Taj’h Colquhoun missed the conversion with the scores level at 4-all.

In the set that followed the kick-off, winger Ofele Lene raced down the sideline to score in quick succession. Hopoate was close to stopping him but was just short of taking him into touch. Colquhoun missed the conversion as his side took the lead, 8-4.

Sea Eagles five-eighth Latu Fainu replied with an astounding try in the 25th minute, forcing the second one-on-one strip of the match before beating two defenders to score under the posts. Herring was unsuccessful with the conversion, hitting the crossbar and rebounding out as the scores were level at 8-all.

Manly hit back with quick succession tries of their own, with Feledy taking a pass off Fainu from the kick-off before breaking down the sideline and outpacing three defenders to score for his side two minutes later. Herring converted for a 14-8 lead at the break.

It only took three minutes of the second half before Manly crossed again as Sagala grabbed his second for the match after pushing past two defenders and sprinting away to dive over in the corner. Herring was successful from the sideline to extend the lead to 20-8.

The floodgates appeared to be opened as Manly scored again in the 40th minute, with Feledy linking up with full-back Lehi Hopoate to grab his second try.

The fullback dragged two defenders into the tackle before popping the ball out to the skillful centre, who ran 50 metres to beat the fullback to score. Herring converted for a 26-8 lead.

Manly winger Revelation Sio scored in the 48th minute after taking a pass from Sagala to score his side’s sixth try of the match. Herring nailed the conversion from the sideline to make the score 32-8.

The Magpies grabbed themselves a consolation try with seven minutes to play through winger Faaletino Tavana after he took a well-placed kick in the corner for a 32-12 scoreline.

Fainu was placed on report for a dangerous tackle with seconds remaining as the referee blew the whistle for full-time.

Manly will be looking to claim its second ever Harold Matthews Cup title next Saturday after claiming their first in 2018 against Parramatta.

All the headlines from a bumper weekend of semi-final football in the NSWRL’s junior representative competitions.

Dragons upset Minor Premiers to advance through to Grand Final

The fifth-placed St George Dragons have pulled off an incredible upset after defeating Minor Premiers Newcastle Knights 26-10 in the Harvey Norman Tarsha Gale Cup Semi-Final.

The Dragons set the tone early after running in three unanswered tries in the first 10 minutes through Ryshe Faamausili, Stella Tijou and Reuben Cherrington.

Newcastle hit back soon after with back-to-back tries coming through Tori Brazier and Kasey Gaukroger. Tylah Vallance converted one from two to bring her side within striking distance at 14-10.

From there, it was all the Dragons as they ran in three more first half tries as Courageous Afoa bagged herself a double and Reuben Cherrington scored her second for the day.

After an all-out attacking half of footy, defence was clearly the focus for the second half as neither side scored another point for the match, bringing the final score to 26-10 and ending what was a promising season for the Knights.

Sydney Roosters book spot in the big dance

The second Harvey Norman Tarsha Gale Cup Semi-Final saw Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy comfortably defeat Illawarra Steelers 22-4 at H.E. Laybutt Field in Sydney.

A first half double to Roosters winger Charlize Lloyd-Phillips and a try to Ruby Smith saw the Roosters lead 12-0 heading into halftime.

It was much of the same at the start of the second half as the Zoe Cass and Keilee Joseph both ran in tries to give the Chooks an unassailable 20-0 lead. Smith was successful with a penalty goal in the 41st minute and the game looked out of reach for the second-placed Steelers.

Determined not to be held scoreless, Steelers winger Annabel McDonald crashed over with two minutes remaining bringing the final score to 22-4 and securing a Dragons vs Roosters Grand Final next weekend.

Eels win low scoring battle of the west

Parramatta Eels have secured their spot in the UNE Harold Matthews Cup Grand Final after defeating arch-rivals Penrith Panthers 14-6 at H.E. Laybutt Field in Sydney.

Suliasi Aho opened the Eels account after just six minutes although the Panthers hit right back through Billy Scott. With both kickers failing to convert, scores were locked at 4-4 heading into halftime.

Despite the Panthers best defensive efforts, the Eels scored tries in quick succession through Joshua Alhazim and Yehya Ayache in the 40th and 47th minutes.

Ethan Sanders missed both conversions although he had a chance to redeem himself in the 48th minute off the back of a penalty, and this time he wouldn’t be denied, bringing the final score to 14-6.

With the Grand Final being played at Bankwest Stadium, the Eels will be feeling very confident as they take on Minor Premiers Manly Warringah Sea Eagles.

Undefeated Sea Eagles fly high in Semi-Final

Manly Warringah Sea Eagles have continued their unbeaten 2021 season after defeating Western Suburbs Magpies 32-12 in the UNE Harold Matthews Cup Semi-Final at Leichhardt Oval in Sydney.

Sea Eagles winger Eli Sagala opened their account after only six minutes and TJ Herring’s conversion attempt was unsuccessful.

The two sides went back and forth, and it was Solomone Saukuru who cracked the game open in the 18th minute. Soon after, the Magpies found themselves in front after winger Ofele Lene crashed over in the 22nd minute.

With the Magpies in the lead, the Sea Eagles proved why they are the competition benchmark after a four-pointer to Latu Fainu opened the flood gates. The Sea Eagles ran in four more unanswered tries stretching their lead out to 32-8 after 48 minutes.

The Magpies would have the final say of the game through Faaletino Tavana who went over in the 53rd minute bringing the final score to 32-12 and locking in a Sea Eagles vs Eels Grand Final next weekend.

Penalty goal helps Raiders edge out Sea Eagles

Canberra Raiders have booked their spot in the UNE SG Ball Cup Grand Final with a 20-18 victory over Manly Warringah Sea Eagles on Saturday.

With the Raiders finishing the season as the most potent attacking side in the competition, and the Sea Eagles finishing as the best defensive side, the first Semi-Final proved to be an entertaining one.

The green machine certainly lived up to their regular season form and came out firing, piling on all of their three tries in just nine minutes. Mitchell Spencer was able to convert all three and the Sea Eagles soon found themselves down 18-0.

It was uncharacteristic of the Sea Eagles although they showed plenty of fight to claw their way back into the game. Daniel O’Donnell crashed over in the 14th minute and Jamie Humphreys converted to bring them within 12 points.

Mitchell Spencer kicked a penalty goal in the 24th minute in what would be the Raiders’ final points of the match.

Manly hooker Daniel O’Donnell bagged himself a double 10 minutes later and Humphreys converted to bring the score to 20-12 at halftime.

Defence was impressive from both sides in the second half with only Manly scoring through fullback Kaeo Weekes, after he was able to capitalise on a quick play the ball by throwing a dummy and crashing over on the left edge.

Humphreys again converted to make the score 20-18, and there would be no further points scored in the second half as Canberra made their way through to next week’s Grand Final.

Steelers edge closer to Premiership glory after defeating Roosters in points fest

Illawarra Steelers have defeated Sydney Roosters 42-32 to book a spot in the UNE SG Ball Cup Grand Final next weekend.

The Roosters opened the scoring at H.E. Laybutt Field through winger Kyron Fekitoa after seven minutes. With the Roosters in the lead, the Steelers began to wrestle back momentum as they piled on four unanswered tries. The Roosters hit back through Jordan Swann who brought the score to 24-10 at the break.

Fekitoa and Steelers five-eighth Junior Amone both scored hat-tricks for the match and further tries to Corey Ross, Ethan King from the Roosters and Tyrell Sloane for the Steelers kept the scoreboard ticking over.

With plenty of exciting footy on show from both sides, it was the goal kicking of Alexander Lobb from the Steelers, who kicked seven from seven, which helped push his side out to a 10-point lead.

Illawarra Steelers will now face off against Canberra Raiders in next week’s Grand Final.

Western Suburbs Magpies will be playing for a place in the Harold Matthews grand final when they take on Manly Warringah Sea Eagles at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday afternoon.

Following their tense victory over Central Coast Roosters last weekend, the side progressed to the final four and are set for their biggest test of the season against the undefeated minor premiers, who have an average winning margin of over 20 points a match.

However, the Magpies — who have only lost two games all season — are up for the challenge and will be seeking revenge for their narrow 20-14 loss to the Sea Eagles in Round 4.

Solomone Saukuru has been the standout player for the Magpies throughout the 2021 season and will have a major impact on Saturday afternoon as he looks to lead his side to the decider.

Exciting youngster Tajh Colquhoun has been named at fullback and will join a spine that features halves Heath Mason and Luke Keppie, as well as hooker Tallyn Da Silva.

The match kicks-off at 12:45pm on Saturday at Leichhardt Oval.
