Blackhawks snatch Meninga Cup thriller

Townsville Blackhawks have capped off a dominant Mal Meninga Cup season (presented by Ford) with a fairy tale finish to their hard-fought grand final against Wynnum Manly Seagulls.

Both teams put everything on the line in a gripping contest at Kayo Stadium but it was the Blackhawks who emerged victorious after a clutch plays from star duo Archie Mesritz and Taj Lateo.

With the score locked at 20-20 and extra time seemingly just a minute and a half away, Mesritz ignited the Blackhawks with a brilliant kick return.

The surge put the Townsville team within reach of a one-point field goal, and man of the moment Lateo stepped up with a flat strike that sailed over the cross bar with just 30 seconds remaining.

An exhausted Wynnum team slumped to their knees, but they could hold their heads high after a superb effort.

The Seagulls led 8-0 early before the Blackhawks soared back with the next 20 points.

But when Jordan Hotere crossed and Payton Gifford landed his fourth goal, it was all locked up and the Gulls were in reach of a famous victory.

It wasn’t to be though for the bayside club as the Blackhawks held their nerve to clinch a thriller.

QRL Grand Finals Weekend Wrap Junior Statewide Competitions

Grand Final weekend delivered on the excitement as teams across the Harvey Norman u19, Cyril Connell Cup and Harvey Norman u17 competitions each showcased their best abilities.

Harvey Norman u19 – Grand Final

Brisbane Tigers 30 def Western Clydesdales 6 at Totally Workwear Stadium.

The Tigers ignited the match with an early try from Sienna Ibrahim, sending the crowd into a frenzy.

2025 Harvey Norman Queensland Maroons – FOOTY FEST Kingaroy – Sat 26 April

Their relentless assault continued as Fleur Ginn and Lishainah Ulugia added to the score, showcasing an unstoppable offensive rhythm.

Despite the Clydesdales’ efforts, which included a retaliation try from Mia Byrnes, the Tigers’ defence held firm.

Kameryn Bray contributed with her own try, while Ulugia’s successful conversions cemented their lead. With each play, it became evident that the Tigers were in complete control.

As the final whistle blew, the Tigers celebrated their confident 30-6 victory, triumphantly marking their place as champions.

The electrifying atmosphere in Totally Workwear Stadium reflected the sheer dominance the Brisbane Tigers displayed, earning them a memorable grand final win.

Cyril Connell Cup – Grand Final

Burleigh Bears 18 def Mackay Cutters 12 at Totally Workwear Stadium

In arguably the best match of the day, the Burleigh Bears triumphed over an admirable Mackay Cutters outfit, to secure the 2025 Cyril Connell Cup.

Running out as favourites, it appeared as if the Bears had one hand on the trophy already after the first 11 minutes, with Captain Tupou Francis and five-eighth Cornelius Kelsall both crossing the try line early.

But a late first half try from Cutters’ lock Eli Woodson would see the underdogs entering the shed with the match on a knifes edge.

The second half opened in a similar fashion to the first, with Tupou Francis scoring his second for the day and the Bears again dominating possession and field position.

Relentless meterage from Tyrell Schwenke, Kingston Seve and Flynn Laffranchi prevented the Cutters from ever mounting any pressure defensively.

A deft boot of Bears halfback Harvey Smith meant that the Cutters’ outside backs were kept busy trying to get out of their own end.

A miraculous late try from Norman Campbell saw the Cutters down a mere 6 points with two minutes to go

But ultimately it was too little too late for the men from Mackay, as a dropped bell after the final siren secured the premiership for the Burleigh Bears, with Tupou Francis taking home the player of the match honours.

Harvey Norman u17 – Grand Final

Brisbane Tigers 32 def Sunshine Coast Falcons 04 at Totally Workwear Stadium.

It was one way traffic in the first of the Statewide Competition Grand Finals, as the Brisbane Tigers outclassed a valiant Sunshine Coast Falcons squad.

It was Ebony Tziros who opened the scoring, being the beneficiary of a brilliant draw and pass play from back rower Leilani Taofinuu.

A late first half try would see the Falcons entering the sheds with a glimmer of hope.

n immediate reply from Ebony Tziros would see the centre secure her second try of the day, as well as knocking in the final nail in the coffin for the girls from the Sunshine Coast.

Hooker Enah Desic was marshalling her troops around the field with composure far beyond her years, as her stout defence and game recognition earnt her player of the match honours.

The scoreline does not truly represent the balance of the game, as possession and field position was somewhat even on the day, but the superior final execution of the Brisbane Tigers allowed them to rack up many more tries on the day.

Mal Meninga Cup – Round 9

Sunshine Coast Falcons 16 def Western Clydesdales 10 at Toowoomba Sports Ground

In a tightly contested match, the Sunshine Coast Falcons edged out the Western Clydesdales with a narrow 16-10 win.

Lily Bain and Tahlee Donald put in solid performances – scoring tries to secure the Falcons’ early lead.

The Capras displayed their dominance with a strong 28-4 victory against the Mackay Cutters.

Jorgie Mitchell was remarkable, scoring two tries, one in the first minute of the game.

Capras’ offence was relentless, and despite a late try from Jade Williams for the Cutters, it wasn’t enough to shift the momentum.

CQ Capras remain firmly in second place, undefeated alongside the Brisbane Tigers.

Souths Logan Magpies 50 def Norths Devils 8 at Marsden State High School

Souths Logan Magpies delivered a stunning blowout victory against the Norths Devils, winning 50-8.

Ipswich Jets 46 def Wide Bay Bulls 0 at Brothers Sports Ground, Bundaberg

The Ipswich Jets secured a dominant 46-nil win over the Wide Bay Bulls, marking an incredible shutout performance.

Briella Gray, Ebony-Rose Te Kura, and Goretti Paese each scored two tries, with Amber Collins converting five goals to cap off the Jets’ offensive onslaught.

The Bulls struggled to find their rhythm, remaining winless this season as the Jets displayed a comprehensive display of skill and teamwork.

Tweed Seagulls 22 def Burleigh Bears 20 at UAA Park

In the closest game of the round, the Tweed Seagulls narrowly defeated the Burleigh Bears 22-20.

With the score tight, the Seagulls clinched the victory courtesy of successful kicking by Torah Luadaka, who scored three crucial goals, helping her team edge out the Bears’ five unsuccessful attempts.

The match was filled with thrilling moments, featuring a strong effort from Isabella Brown and Kyla Price for the Bears, but ultimately, the Seagulls celebrated a tightly contested win in the closing minutes of the game.

QRL aligns pathways and strengthens community leagues

Queensland Rugby League can today confirm the implementation of a new statewide competitions structure for aspirational male and female players.

The 2024 season will see the removal of the male Under 21 competition, with the current Cyril Connell Challenge and Mal Meninga Cup competitions moving to Under 17 and Under 19 age groups.

The new structure will also align with female competition age groups following confirmation of the introduction of an Under 17 girls competition to support the existing Under 19s.

Both female competitions have been structured to accommodate future expansion and competition growth, and will be underpinned by the Future Maroons Academy supporting the City / Country Under 17 and Ruby / Sapphires Under 19 programs.

The elevation of under-age male competitions aligns with the junior representative program in New South Wales, as well as the proposed Under 17 interstate game and the existing Under 19 clash.

The Under 19 male competition will be played over an extended period to compensate for the removal of Under 21s, with a proposed 10 round season and four week finals series.

Both male competitions will continue to accommodate school competitions as part of the existing pathway.

QRL chief executive officer Ben Ikin said the revamp would allow clubs to sharpen their focus on talent development and talent specialisation.

“Our statewide clubs are best positioned to develop talent for the elite game – and we believe the best 20 and 21 year-old players in the state are capable of playing in the Hostplus Cup and BMD Premiership,” Ikin said.

“Data also suggests that the majority of players in this age group already have been identified, meaning they hold NRL or NRL Development contracts, or are Hostplus Cup and BMD Premiership contracted players.”

Ikin said the changes would serve to strengthen community rugby league.

“This model provides statewide competition clubs a better opportunity to align with their community league affiliates,” Ikin said.

“It’s also important to remember that players who may take longer to develop still have a pathway to open age QRL statewide competitions via local senior grade competitions in their area.”

“The changes to competition structures are further underpinned by the 13-15 year old development programs delivered around the state.

“There are currently Under 15 boys programs being delivered around Queensland, with rebel Development Series games scheduled for the upcoming school holidays.

“These programs will remain a critical part of the talent identification process for Under 17 boys and girls.”

Grand finalist voted best Auswide Bank ‘player to bank on’ for 2023

The voting for this year’s best Auswide Bank ‘player to bank on’ went right down to the wire in a battle set to be replicated in this weekend’s Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup grand final.

Townsville Blackhawks backrower Elijah-Shane Tapau has taken out the title of the best 2023 Auswide Bank ‘player to bank on’.

After a destructive performance in Round 5 against the Central Queensland Capras.

Set to play in this Sunday’s premiership decider.

Tapau didn’t emerge as the winner until the final minute, with just over one thousand votes logged on the final day to help him pip fellow top contender.

This week’s opposition forward – Redcliffe Dolphins captain, Michael Waqa.

Both players were engaged in a heated back-and-forth battle in the voting since it opened on April 12, with Waqa in the lead on Monday.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full" src="https://www.qrl.com.au/contentassets/132921659de6487db1fb4dcc93034e95/elijah-shane-tapau_2.jpg?center=0.23%2C0.37&preset=photo-inline" alt="Elijah-Shane Tapau.
Tapau ended up taking the win with 38 per cent of the vote while Waqa came in second with 33 per cent of the vote.

Electric Ipswich Jets winger Alton Naiyep came in third with 11 per cent of the vote.

In total, 14,638 votes were placed this year in a highly competitive field.

AUSWIDE BANK MAL MENINGA CUP

Vote for the 2023 Auswide Bank ‘player to bank on’

The Auswide Bank ‘player to bank on’ was a weekly video to celebrate and recognise the talent within the competition, with one player highlighted in each round of the regular season.

Each weekly winners all received a $100 gift voucher courtesy of Auswide Bank and then the public voted on the overall winner for 2023, with Tapau set to receive an additional $250 gift voucher also courtesy of Auswide Bank.

Player to bank on: Elijah-Shane Tapau

Tapau was initially the Round 5 winner, after the blockbusting forward put on an attacking masterclass, scoring three tries and making 127 run metres.

He has been named for this Sunday’s Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup grand final clash against the Redcliffe Dolphins, which will be played at Totally Workwear Stadium from 1pm.

Surge in QRL community participation as rugby league captivates Queensland

Footy fever is gripping Queensland as more and more junior and senior players sign on to play community rugby league across the state.

At the start of this month, Queensland Rugby League player registrations were up 14 per cent, equating to about 8000 more registered participants compared to the corresponding period in 2022.

Representatives from the QRL and National Rugby League were in Redcliffe today to celebrate the strong start to the club rugby league season.

While QRL general manager of community and competitions Glenn Ottaway and NRL executive general manager of elite football Graham Annesley provided a participation update to the media.

More than 50 excited junior players took part in a skills session on the Kayo Stadium field.

NRL executive general manager of elite football Graham Annesley – Photo: Jacob Grams/QRL

They were joined by Harvey Norman Queensland Maroons head coach Tahnee Norris and squad members Evania Pelite and Shannon Mato, as well as Dolphins NRL star Sean O’Sullivan.

Norris, Pelite and Mato spoke passionately about the growth of the female game and connection between community rugby league and the elite level.

The surge in Queensland registration numbers coincides with a strong start to QRL statewide competitions

The excitement generated by the emergence of The Dolphins in the NRL; and the blistering early form of the Brisbane Broncos.

Add in many other eye-catching performances from Queensland-eligible players,

There’s ample reasons to be optimistic about the imminent challenge awaiting Billy Slater’s Queensland Maroons team.

Future Maroons are currently enjoying their footy on rugby league fields all around the state, with 60,000 club participants having already signed on to play Queensland’s favourite sport.

Ottaway praised the efforts of staff and volunteers.

“The surge in early participation numbers is a reflection on the way the game is structured and delivered across Queensland,” Ottaway said.

QRL general manager of community and competitions Glenn Ottaway – Photo: Jacob Grans/QRL

“There is also greater confidence in the registration platform in that we have opened registrations on December 1 for the past three years.

There has been a consistent and aligned marketing approach between the QRL and NRL.

“What we have seen is a much higher peak in registrations through January than we’ve experienced before.

Queensland Maroons – Long Lunch 2023 – More Info

“Club volunteers need to be praised for having their products set up in the national database to coincide with the national opening of registrations.

Rugby league is also one of the more affordable community sports.”

Given the promising early data approaching Easter, Ottaway expects this year’s final numbers to eclipse the 2022 figure of 64,566.

“Every age demographic is above where it was at the same time last year, including seniors (19 years and above),” Ottaway said.

Male participation (year to date) is up 13 per cent up, while female registrations continue to grow.

O’Sullivan said the opportunity to play junior rugby league helped shape him into the person he is today.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full" src="https://www.qrl.com.au/contentassets/95dba5472ea7442cba6f3859cc9eafc5/2v1a9997.jpg?center=0.38%2C0.55&preset=photo-inline" alt="Sean O'Sullivan.
“I often think back to how much fun I had playing junior rugby league”.

“Even more importantly, it teaches kids real life skills that go way beyond the field to help them thrive in life,” O’Sullivan said.

Mini Maroons Mam’s biggest fan on path to ‘big lights’

Children like Rolias Pabai are the reason the Outer Islands Camps, which started in 2019, are so important.

The six-year-old from St Pauls village on Moa Island earned the Junior Camper Award at his camp.

One of two under 12 development camps held in the Torres Strait during the Easter school holidays – at Kubin village, for perfecting his chip-and-chase and getting thoroughly involved in all activities.

For Robias, the camp was his first rugby league experience and told organisers it was the best three days he’d ever had and would like it to happen every school holidays.

The passion for the game comes from watching the Queensland Maroons and the cult hero of many in the Torres Strait islands in Brisbane Broncos five-eighth Ezra Mam.

So much so he was telling everyone that’s who he was.

Rolias, who also enjoys going to the beach and hunting with his dad and uncles, told Cape and Torres league and club coordinator Terry Abednego he would one day like to play in the NRL in front of the ‘big lights’.

His totems are the Samu (Emu) and the Dhoeybaw (Wild Yam Leaf).

Former Melbourne Storm player Sam Joe was the camp manager at Kubin, which welcomed children from St Pauls, Badu Island, Mabuiag Island, Boigu Island and Dauan Island.

For some, this is the only chance they have to experienced organised rugby league activities, though renewed efforts involving Zenadth Kes Rugby League and local government agencies.

To establish cluster competitions in the outer islands will be making sure many more opportunities exist in future.

Welcoming with open arms

Mini Maroons Mam’s biggest fan (Photo : QRL Media)

Bowen Seagulls have welcomed a player in their midst who is set to play an important role for his new teammates.

Reef Nicol, who is non-verbal and has Down syndrome, is a massive North Queensland Cowboys fan and simply loves the game of rugby league.

Reef turns 13 this year but most of his school mates play Under 11s at the Seagulls, so he feels right at home just being around the team.

He has been a keen participant at training ahead of the season, joining in passing and kicking drills and having fun with his mates.

The club aims to give Reef every opportunity to have positive memories of the game and being around the team.

Both at training, and volunteering on game day to help his teammates beat the heat with plenty of water to keep them hydrated.

Future stars out to follow Cotter’s footsteps

Mini Maroons Mam’s biggest fan (Photo : QRL Media)

Crocs to Canetoads brought a huge number of rising stars together for a thoroughly enjoyable under 16 girls and under 15 boys carnival in Sarina earlier this month.

One of the best was Brothers’ Mia Slater, who took home the Daly Cherry-Evans Trophy rising star award for the under 16 girls.

Kobe Oberhardt swept many of the awards in the under 15 boys, with the Emerald Tigers five-eighth snaring the DCE Trophy, Wendell Sailor Trophy for Best Back and Reuben Cotter U15 Boys Player of the Carnival.

Souths fullback Aleisha Corbett was named best back and Brianna Clark U16 Girls Player of the Carnival.

But the contribution of Luke McCulloch and Logan Bryant was critical to the carnival running successfully, with the two young men putting their hands up to help with refereeing.

Author : Jorja Brinums QRL lead content producer

Queensland City U17s v Queensland Country U17s

Queensland’s best emerging under 17 talent – girls and boys – will be put on show in Queensland City versus Queensland Country games on October 2.

QRL senior pathways and performance manager Brett Jones said the representative opportunity was built on the success of the 2019 under 16 City versus Country fixture and was an integral part of Queensland Rugby League’s pathways.

“The opportunity to bring together the state’s best male and female talent is critical to ensuring the next generations of Queensland talent is exposed to the expectations and demands of representative football,” Jones said.

“It is the representative entry point for players across Queensland and the foundation of the Queensland men’s and women’s State of Origin pathway.”

What are the teams?

Queensland Under 17 City – Boys
Queensland Under 17 Country – Boys
Queensland Under 17 City – Girls
Queensland Under 17 Country – Girls

When is it?

The program, hosted by the Queensland Academy of Sport, will be held between September 28 and October 2
The two games will be played on October 2;

Queensland Under 17 City Girls v Queensland Under 17 Country Girls will kick off at 12.50pm

Queensland Under 17 City Boys v Queensland Under 17 Country Boys will kick off at 2.20pm

The two games will be livestreamed on Kayo Freebies, QRL.com.au and on the QRL Facebook page

Who is eligible?

Players must turn 16 or 17 before December 31, 2021

Players must be eligible to represent Queensland and will be required to return and sign eligibility document before being selected
Am I eligible for the City or Country team?

Eligibility will be determined through a players Origin eligibility and be based on where they played rugby league prior to the age of 13

Brisbane, Gold Coast and Ipswich Leagues will align to City

All other leagues and clubs will align to Country

What is the selection process?

Boys

The male selection process is led by the QRL’s pathway and performance team, with the support of NRL recruitment teams
Players can be selected from any league or competition from across Queensland; the Cyril Connell Challenge and Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup competitions are key competitions the selection panel have monitored

In addition, the Queensland School Sport Rugby League (QSSRL) competitions and events provide further statewide opportunities for players

Girls

The female selection process is underpinned by regional carnivals for under 17 players in the North, Central and South East regions

Selectors were appointed by the QRL pathways and performance team to observe the carnivals and support final selection of teams
When will teams be announced

Eligibility checks will commence August 20, with final teams announced by August 27

What will the players experience?

The camp will focus on core skills and supporting players to understand their areas of strength and areas of opportunity aligned to the Queensland player toolkit

Develop self-awareness of the work ethic and skill required to perform at every stage of the pathway if they were to play for Queensland at some point in the future

The purpose of the camp is to expose players to the standards and values expected of Queensland representative players
Players will be provided access to past Origin players who will assist the coaching team as mentors throughout the camp
Who are the coaching and support staff?

Kurt Richards and Ben Jeffries have been appointed program coaching directors and will oversee the training programs for boys and girls, respectively

John Mitchell will lead the physical performance team and be supported by Ben Heidenreich through the QRL partnership with All Sports Physiotherapy, to provide best practice management of players during camp
