Roosters snatch back-to-back titles in SG Ball Cup thriller

The Sydney Roosters have overcome an 18-point deficit to claim back-to-back UNE SG Ball Cup premierships.

The Knights wasted no time getting tries on the board, as they found themselves 12-points in front early.

The Knights spine carried them through the first half, giving them to the upper hand heading into the sheds at halftime 24-10.

It was a comeback for the ages, with the Sydney Roosters producing three unanswered tries in the second half to claim the UNE SG Ball Cup for a second consecutive year under coach Boyd Cordner.

“That is what champion teams do. No matter what happens, they stand up,” Cordner said post-game.

The Knights were quick to act, scoring their first points just three minutes into the contest.

Two quick runs from dummy half saw them straighten up their attack, gaining promising field position before a pass to prop Beau Hill saw him power over the try-line. A successful conversion from Callum Elsley saw the Knights with an early 6-0 lead.

Just minutes later, the Knights found themselves in again just metres from their own try-line, as their ruck speed proved too quick for the Roosters.

An eyes up play saw the ball batted down by the Roosters before Knights halfback Chase Butler cleaned it up to score.

Elsley added the extra’s as the Knights found themselves two converted tries ahead.

The Roosters answered back through their trusted fullback Rex Bassingthwaighte.

Trying to crack the Newcastle defensive line in repeat sets, the ball found its way into the hands of Bassigthwaighte who wrestled with the Knights defenders to get the ball down.

Converting his own try, the Roosters trailed 12-6.

The Knights extended their lead after an impressive kick pressure display.

On the last play, the Roosters went to send the ball sky-high before it ricocheted off the Knights to bounce its way back towards their try-line, as Butler regained the ball and ran it over the line to score his first-half double.

Another successful conversion extended the Knights lead, 18-6.

It was all class from the Knights towards the end of the first half as they piled pressure on the Roosters with repeat sets in attack.

Passing and tipping the ball out to the wing, it landed in the hands of the competitions leading try scorer Melchizedek Nonu who found his 18th try of the season.

Elsley converted from the sideline taking the Knights to a 24-6 lead.

The Roosters managed to decrease the deficit with just over three minutes remaining in the first half.

Another push through their left edge saw centre Brooklyn Heath power over the line to score the very important try to keep the Roosters in touch, as they ended the half behind 24-10.

An error to start the second half from the Knights saw the Roosters with an early opportunity.

Caleb Fesolai placed a well-timed pass just metres out from the try line to Cooper Gibbs, who ran a hard and direct line to snatch the first points of the second half.

A successful conversion saw the Roosters back in the game, 24-16.

The Roosters climbed their way back up the score board after a clutch line break from centre Bastion Armstrong, seeing him run straight up the middle of the field.

To his right was Bassingthwaighte, who received the pass to run away with his second try.

Another successful conversion saw the Roosters turn this Grand Final into a two-point ball game.

With 13 minutes left in the Grand Final, the Roosters took the lead for the first time.

Bassingwaighte, who had been at the heart of the Roosters comeback, found a gap as he slipped inside to make a break up-field.

Finding his halfback Zaylen Ekepati on his inside, the Roosters were just metres away from their line as a quick tip-on made its way to the hands of James Finegan to score.

Bassingwaighte converted the try and the Roosters took a 28-24 lead that they defended for the remainder of the Grand Final to take home the UNE SG Ball Cup in back-to-back years.

“These guys are our future,” Cordner said.

“We have such a great group of young men that just want to work hard, and I have been blessed with such a good group of players.

“I am very proud, very happy and I can’t wait for more.”

Rare double on offer at Junior Reps Grand Final Day

The Sydney Roosters and Newcastle Knights have the opportunity to claim a rare double at the NSW Rugby League Junior Representatives Grand Final Day at Leichhardt Oval tomorrow (Saturday 2 May).

Both clubs will feature in the finals of the UNE Harold Matthews Cup (Under 17s Boys) and the UNE SG Ball Cup (Under 19s Men) on a day that showcases the future of Rugby League and the depth of talent emerging across both male and female pathways in NSW.

In the other matches, the Central Coast Roosters will take on Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in Westpac Lisa Fiaola Cup (Under 17s Girls), and Parramatta Eels will clash with the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks in the Westpac Tarsha Gale Cup (Under 19s Women).

The Bulldogs return to the Grand Finals stage after claiming the inaugural Westpac Lisa Fiaola Cup premiership in 2024.

With the two sides yet to meet in 2026, a clash between the third and fourth placed teams shape as one of the most unpredictable deciders of the day.

In the UNE Harold Matthews Cup, the Roosters stand on the brink of history as they chase their first Under 17s Boys premiership since the competition’s inception 56 years ago, while the Knights have returned to the decider looking for revenge after falling short last year.

The Eels will be striving for consecutive premierships in the Westpac Tarsha Gale Cup competition, following a dominant finals campaign, while the Sharks will be chasing their first competition win since 2018.

The Grand Final Day will wrap up with the Roosters aiming to secure back-to-back UNE SG Ball Cup premierships under the guidance of newly-appointed Westpac NSW Blues assistant coach Boyd Cordner.

The Knights will continue their inspirational run from seventh place into the decider.

NSWRL Chief Executive David Trodden said the Junior Representatives Grand Final Day highlights the strength of the development systems in NSW and the commitment of all of the clubs to nurturing the future stars of Rugby League.

“In our view they are the best development competitions in the Rugby League world,” Trodden said.

“The Grand Final Day is a great opportunity to showcase the incredible talent emerging across our male and female pathways.

“It is also great to see our senior representative players giving back and investing in the future of our game with a host of past NRL players and True Blues taking on coaching roles in the pathways competitions.”

A first in five years for Sea Eagles Junior Reps

For the first time in five years, Manly Warringah Sea Eagles have made the finals in both the Harold Matthews Cup (U17s) and the SG Ball Cup (U19s) competitions in the same season.

It’s a tremendous achievement for the Sea Eagles pathways program and augers well for the Club’s elite development in the next few years.

The last time both teams qualified for the play-offs was in 2021, when Lehi Hopoate was fullback in Harold Matthews and Tolu Koula was a strike centre in SG Ball.

The Under 17s team in 2021 was captained by Josh Feledy who played his junior footy alongside Hopoate at the Beacon Hill Bears.

The team finished as undefeated premiers beating the Parramatta Eels in the Grand Final to claim Manly’s second Harold Matthews Cup title.

The Sea Eagles Under 19s team that same season were beaten by eventual premiers Canberra Raiders in the semi-finals, after finishing second on the ladder.

As we know Koula has since progressed to become one the NRL’s elite centres, recently signing a multi-year contract with Manly.

Hopoate’s progress has also been rapid, the 21-year-old scoring 19 tries in his 40 appearances since making his NRL debut with Manly in 2024.

For Feledy, playing first grade for his local club has taken a little longer, but it’s been well worth the wait.

It was only last Thursday when Feledy became Sea Eagle #670 when called off the bench in Manly’s 52-18 win over the Dolphins.

It was at 4 Pines Park a few years ago when Feledy made his NRL debut, but it was playing against Manly not with them.

Playing for the Wests Tigers Feledy was on the end of a heavy loss at Brookvale in what was the first of his three NRL games for the joint-venture club before returning to the Sea Eagles this season.

“I was really proud to represent Manly in the junior reps and to win that Harold Matthews premiership was awesome, particularly doing it with Hoppa,” said Feledy.

“Then to finally play first grade with Manly last week was so special. I used to watch Tom and Jake as a kid and that’s all I wanted to do, was play for Manly.

“My journey sort of took a different path, but to come back and make my club debut for Manly, that’s been my childhood dream.”

Significantly, this year’s rep squads at Manly are heavily stacked with local juniors, who, like the Trbojevic brothers, Hopoate, and Feledy, are dreaming of playing NRL for the Sea Eagles.

Pathways and Development Manager, Blake Cavallaro, says the results are pleasing to see.

“Around 80% of our Harold Matthews squad and 60% of our SG Ball squad are local juniors who have progressed through the system playing at this level,” said Cavallaro.

“Regardless of results, that in itself is a successful outcome for our pathways program.
Blake Cavallaro Junior Pathways & Development Manager

“It’s really pleasing to see this come to fruition as we further strengthen the player development framework we’re creating here at Manly.”

With the Sea Eagles again qualifying for the finals in both ‘Matts’ and ‘Ball’, the future does look bright.

And while it might take some a little longer than others to wear the maroon and white in first grade at Manly, there appears to be quite a few in the pipeline.

Bishop Neal’s extraordinary man-of-the-match performance powered the One New Zealand Warriors to a repeat premiership when they beat Newcastle 30-16 in Saturday’s Harold Matthews Cup (under-17) grand final at Leichhardt Oval in Sydney.

After finishing the regular season in third place, the Warriors marched forward in the playoffs dismissing the Sydney Roosters, South Sydney and finally the Knights to claim the title again in just their second year in the competition.

They didn’t want for impressive contributors but Neal was unquestionably the standout.

The 16-year-old St Thomas of Canterbury College student operated on an almost celestial level as he scored two barnstorming tries, made big metres with numerous aggressive runs and pulled off try-saving plays at the other end of the field as well as putting on some punishing hits.

Warriors 30 – 16 Knights

It was Neal who single-handedly pulled the Warriors back into the contest after they had conceded a 0-12 deficit inside the opening 13 minutes.

Just three minutes after the Knights’ second try, Neal had the Warriors on the board when he carved through on an arcing run, giving Newcastle fullback Riley Rostron a vicious facial fend on the way to scoring a superb try.

Then minutes later he jumped into dummy half close to the line and drove through defenders to get the ball down, as only he could.

With Alapati Soagia converting both tries the Warriors were back to 12-12 and ought to have had another before the break.

The Knights stalled their momentum in the opening minutes of the second half with a try to second rower Curtis Mulherin but it didn’t ruffle the Warriors.

Just seven minutes later they uncorked a wonderful try when they exploited an injury to Newcastle winger Jett McKay, heading down his under-manned edge with some slick ball work for standoff Hinckley Ioka to score.

Soagia converted to give his side an 18-16 lead.

The battle ebbed and flowed for a period but the Warriors finished the encounter impressively with front rowers Krushil Koteka and Lucian Mikaele scoring in the 50th and 58th minutes for a convincing 30-16 margin, one they certainly deserved.

The Warriors had overcome adversity during the week, losing two of their key players in back-up dummy half Amasio Tiatia and captain Tyson Hansen.

That caused a reshuffle in the halves with Ioka brought in from the wing to take Hansen’s place at standoff and Kaian Olsen coming in on the wing.

Fullback Jeremiah Lemana, who had another wonderful game, led the side in Hansen’s absence so becoming the only player to feature in both of the Warriors’ grand final triumphs.

Parramatta staged one of the best comebacks all season to put on five unanswered tries to win the club’s first Westpac Tarsha Gale Cup 28-16 over the Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy in today’s Under 19s Women’s Grand Final.

It meant a double celebration for the western Sydney club after the Eels had taken the Westpac Lisa Fiaola Cup (Under 17s Girls) Grand Final earlier in the day at Leichhardt Oval.

They trailed 16-0 midway through the first half but then put on two tries before the break and another three afterwards to claim the silverware in style.

The Roosters were hunting their third title in four years and were under the guidance of True Blues Keeley Davis and Corban Baxter with former Australian Schoolgirls coach Mel Spero also on the coaching staff.

But the Eels took the spoils today and all the player awards with lock Ryvrr-Lee Alo (pictured below) named Player of the Series.

Prop Tess McWilliams Player of the Match (pictured above), after her double seemed to spark Parramatta into action.

“It’s amazing,” said Eels coach Charlotte Henry.

“I suppose we always knew we had the grit; had the courage.

We were brave in getting back but we knew just to trust the process and take it one play at a time.

“Our forwards are the heart and soul of our team leading from the front and doing everything for us in both attack and defence.

“They led the way for us today – couldn’t be more proud of them.”

It was anyone’s game at the break with the Roosters leading 16-12.

It was all the Roosters early on as they skipped out to a 16-0 lead after 17 minutes with their forwards took charge.

Off a flying 30 metre run from fullback Logan Fletcher, prop Te Raukura Leafe crashed over two plays later.

Fletcher still had an influence by kicking the conversion.

Seven minutes later and hooker Mahlie Cashin took charge from dummy-half and saw a small enough hole for her to dart through.

Then interchange forward Aliyah Nasio was just minutes on the field when she scored after the Roosters had been applying the screws with repeat sets on the Eels line.

But then the match took a 180-degree turn through the efforts of McWilliams.

She turned on the speed from 10 metres out to crash over in the 23rd minute and then did the same from 25 metres out four minutes later.

McWilliams fended off two players and dragged another three over the line to grab her double. Centre Alleya Scrivens converted both (16-12) to set up a knife-edge second half.

Things didn’t start well for the Eels, when captain and lock Ryvyy-Lee Alo failed her HIA and could take no further part in the game.

Regardless it was the Eels props working with utility hooker Rory Muller that put Parramatta in front for the first time in the match.

First McWilliams got close to the chalk before Muller signalled to her No.8 Taylah Falaniko for a crash-play, which was exactly what happened (18-16).

Eight minutes later and the Eels halfback Aaliyah Soufan scored to put one hand on the trophy, but second rower Fontayne Tufuga wrapped up the magnificent comeback with an 80-metre runaway try.

She tucked the ball up under her armpit and dodged defenders before finally falling over the line with seconds remaining on the clock.

Seaeagles Harold Matthews Finals report

Manly Warringah Sea Eagles have suffered an 18-14 defeat to the South Sydney Rabbitohs in week one of the finals in the Harold Matthews Cup in Blacktown, bringing an end to their 2025 campaign.

Sea Eagles – 18 14 Rabbitohs

Team Stats

When the two sides met in round five earlier this season, the Sea Eagles came away 24-12 victors.

It wasn’t to be this time round, with a hat-trick of tries to the Rabbitohs in the first half proving to be too much.

Manly managed to hold out South Sydney’s tiresome attack in the second half and kept them scoreless, but their errors were the deciding factor that sealed their fate.

It was Manly’s first appearance in the competitions finals since their famous 2021 campaign, in which they went undefeated en route to a 24-12 victory in the final.

The Sea Eagles started the match in the best way possible with a try after just two minutes to Oscar Crotty.

The full-back got on the end of a grubber kick from five-eighth Kobe Morris and grounded the ball in the in-goal area for an early 4-0 lead.

South Sydney didn’t sit back and quickly replied as centre Taj Aufai-Farani scored a hat-trick in emphatic fashion, with tries coming in the 10th, 14th and 21st minute.

Five-eighth Payton Tarau converted all three tries for an 18-4 scoreline at half-time.

An early penalty to start the second half gifted the Rabbitohs possession deep in the Sea Eagles’ territory.

But that didn’t phase the boys in maroon and white as they held out the attack with compact defence to regain possession in front of their own tryline.

South Sydney continued to pressure Manly deep in their own territory, with countless sets at the line as they searched for a fourth try.

The Sea Eagles continued to band together to hold out the tiresome attack and it paid off as they won the ball back, with a penalty being awarded moments later to help them out of their half.

The Sea Eagles went close to scoring in the 46th minute. Halfback Max Prykiel put a chip kick over the defence to the left corner for centre Tahj Hamilton, who was unable to maintain possession as he fumbled the ball in front of the tryline.

Manly capitalised

Manly capitalised off a penalty at the halfway line as Tom Longland crashed over to score in the 52nd minute.

A quick shift to the right edge freed up space for the winger to step past the defenders and force his way over, cutting the deficit to 18-10 with under ten minutes remaining.

A mistake from the kick-off momentarily paused any chances of a comeback as the Sea Eagles were forced to defend once again.

After breaking out of a scrum in their own half, Morris kicked the ball deep into the Rabbitohs’ corner and the side regained possession after taking the player over the sideline.

With their fresh set and the clock continuing to tick down, Manly forced their way over for a try with three minutes to play to set up a grandstand finish.

Hooker Ashton Large burrowed under the defence with a strong run to score for an 18-14 scoreline.

Another error from the kick-off proved to be costly, with the Sea Eagles being forced to make a full field effort after retaining possession with less then a minute to play.

The siren sounded during a quick play the ball attempt at the halfway mark, bringing an end to the match and confirming the side’s four-point defeat.

Congratulations to the Harold Matthews team on making it through to this year’s finals series.

Newcastle Maitland Region Knights have claimed their first ALE Andrew Johns Cup trophy after a hard-fought 14-10 win over a gallant Northern Rivers Titans at GIO Stadium today.

In a match where the conditions were tough and points were hard to come by for both teams with the rain tumbling down, the Knights took a slender 8-6 lead into half-time and then dug deep to survive a Titans fightback at the end.

Grand Final – Saturday 29th March

NMR Knights 14 – 10 NR Titans

“It feels surreal and I’m very excited for all the boys to finish off a good season,” Knights coach Joshua Corby said.

“They’ve been working hard and to come here is a pretty good experience for them, and to get the win just tops it off.

“We definitely played to the conditions and it might not have been that exciting for the crowd to play tough footy but it was what we needed to do and we hung on.”

Knights halfback Ty Ennis was awarded the Robert ‘Bert’ Lowrie Medal for Player of the Match after a strong performance which included setting up a crucial try for winger Chayce Afa and landing a sideline conversion to give his side some breathing space at 14-6.

The Knights started the match strongly and threatened to score on a couple of occasions, only to be denied once after some tenacious defence from the Titans while Afa was ruled to have slid into touch on a kick chase before planting the ball down.

The Titans also had their chances at the other end of the field, but were unable to convert and mount any genuine pressure.

A Titans knock-on from a scrum let the Knights off the hook 10 metres out from their own line and they compounded that mistake by conceding a penalty for tackling halfback Ty Ennis after a kick.

The Knights took advantage when Ennis passed to fullback Rico Elers who drew the defence in with a double pump before sending Tyler Donaldson over for the first try of the match. Ennis was unable to land the conversion to leave the Knights ahead 4-0.

The Knights had another chance to mount pressure after Ennis iced a 40/20 kick but he was unable to maintain possession while backing himself to score.

The mistake and a relieving penalty for the Titans saw them work their way downfield and it wasn’t long before fullback Jaylon Russell was accelerating his way across field before picking up Jay Walpole to score in the corner.

Centre Parker Kemister landed the sideline conversion to put the Titans in front 6-4.

The Knights regrouped and then took the advantage into the break when five-eighth Morgan Carter sent Elers over the line to put their noses back in front 8-6.

Titans halfback Dallas Russell showed his skill when play resumed after landing a 40/20 but they were also unable to take advantage of the play with Jaylon Russell losing possession.

The Knights regrouped and then took advantage of a barnstorming run by Oliver Lawrence with Ennis launching a cross-field kick for Afa to outleap his opponent, pluck the ball out of the air and stretch out to score.

Ennis landed the conversion to give the Knights a buffer at 14-6.

A heavy collision between Titans lock Mitchell Barnett and his Knights counterpart Jett Pritchard led to a break in play.

The Titans regrouped with five-eighth Eden Humphreys floating a long pass over the top for Walpole to grab his second try for the game and reduce the deficit to 14-10.

The Titans had their chances as the clock wound down but the Knights defence held firm to hand the club its first title.

Second half fightback comes up short for Flegg Sharks

A second half comeback from the Jersey Flegg Sharks has fallen just short, with the young Cronulla side beaten 14-12 in the under-21 Grand Final by the Bulldogs.

In a match of high intensity, the Sharks fell behind 14-0 in the first half, before two second half tries, the later coming with just five minutes remaining, gave them hope of a come-from-behind win, however despite having their chances deep in opposition territory were unable to get across the line to tip the result in their favour.

It was a disappointing end to an outstanding season, one in which the Sharks won 10 straight games to reach the competition decider.

The first period of the match was all Bulldogs, on the back of a strong kicking game from half back Cassius Tia and after Sharks fullback Siteni Taukamo spent time in the sin bin.

Canterbury team built a 10-point after the opening 17 minutes of the match.

A third Bulldogs try made it 14-0 and after defending grimly on the stroke of half time the Sharks would have been pleased to get the opportunity to regroup after being forced to defend their line for long periods.

The teams continued to press after the break, with both refusing to crack, until an individual effort from Taj Ford.

Sharks five eight slicing through on halfway before beating the full back to cross under the uprights.

The conversion made it 14-6 with the second Sharks try, scored by winger Kristian Dixon following a clever kick from Noah Penitani, the try converted by Pollard, and the Cronulla team had given themselves a chance at 14-12 with time running out.

Despite their best efforts, the Bulldogs scrambled desperately on their line, in keeping the Sharks at bay to claim the 2024 Jersey Flegg Premiership.

The Sharks were well served by Dixon and Penitani on their right side, Ford was dangerous with ball in hand and kicked strongly.

Hooker Chaz Jarvis was busy throughout, while the pack lead by skipper Sam McCullough, along with props Lachlan Crouch and Felix Faatili worked hard against the physical Bulldogs forwards.

Cronulla are one win away from the Jersey Flegg title after dismantling minor premiers Canberra 38-18 at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday to advance to the grand final.

The emphatic performance marked a stunning 10th consecutive victory for the resurgent Sharks, who just two months ago were almost dead and buried.

Having only secured a playoffs berth in the last round of the regular season, Cronulla now stand on the cusp of the club’s second Jersey Flegg premiership as they prepare to face the Bulldogs at CommBank Stadium next Sunday.

Finals Week 3 – Saturday 21st September

Play by Play

Five-eighth Taj Ford bagged a hat-trick, while the electric centre-wing pairing of Michael Gabrael and Te Wehi Waitere were also instrumental in the six-tries-to-three romp as they wreaked early havoc on the left edge.

The elusive outside backs combined to engineer the opening four-pointer for Ford, who finished off a long-range movement by backing up through the middle.

Riley Pollard’s simple conversion made it 6-0 after seven minutes.

Gabrael was soon at it again, putting back-rower Dylan Coutts into the clear. He linked with a galloping Waitere, but a shift on the next play came unstuck.

Cronulla surged further ahead in the 16th minute with a piece of brilliance from Kristian Dixon, who flew to reel in a bomb, absorbed the contact and charged over the stripe.

Another easy goal for Pollard gave the Sharks an imposing 12-0 lead.

Continuing a starring role

Continuing a starring role, Gabrael laid on Cronulla’s third try when he swerved into space after a bullet pass from Ford before hitting Waitere again.

The flanker had work to do but withstood the defence to slam the ball down.

Pollard slipped as he kicked the conversion but still drilled it over the black dot.

Canberra hit back in the shadows of half-time when forward Tahrell Feaveai barged across from close range. Mitchell Henderson’s goal cut the margin to 18-6.

The Sharks came out firing after the break, reaffirming their dominance with centre Talanoa Penitani proving too strong.

Pollard added the extras once more before booting a penalty goal to give the underdogs a 26-6 advantage.

Not done with yet, the Raiders rallied as Kane Rushton spectacularly dived to score from a well-placed cross-field kick. Henderson couldn’t convert.

Canberra kept pressing, but Cronulla landed the knockout blow in the 61st minute thanks to runaway prop Felix Faatili.

The crowd rose in awe as the giant gathered a kick and set off downfield, showing tremendous speed belying his frame.

While he didn’t have the legs to go all the way, Ford split the Raiders on the next play.

The playmaker quickly had his treble, scooping up a fortuitous ricochet from his own grubber to send the Cronulla party into overdrive.

Pollard maintained his perfect goal-kicking record to cap off a tremendous display.

A try to Canberra’s Siamani Leuluai on the bell didn’t dampen the delight of the young Sharks, who can become Cronulla’s second title-winning Flegg team after the victorious side of 2018 when they tackle the Bulldogs next weekend.

Reh steers Steelers to Tarsha Gale Cup Grand Final glory

Westpac Tarsha Gale Cup Player of the Series Kasey Reh showed why she had been the best player all season after inspiring the Illawarra Steelers to a 24-12 win over the Newcastle Knights in today’s Grand Final at CommBank Stadium.

The No.7 and captain had two try assists in the Steelers tough four tries to three victory, which handed the club its second Under 19s premiership after their win in 2019.

Despite the Steelers winning all eight regular season games and a 26-4 Semi-final win over southern Sydney neighbours Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks, Reh said there were plenty of nerves coming in.

“Definitely, we all knew that none of our results from past games meant anything today when we ran out here,” Reh told nswrl.com.au.

“We just stayed in the grind there … Newcastle really gave it to us.

“We just went back-and-forth for I don’t know how many minutes, but we stayed together as a team and stuck to our systems.”

Reh comes from strong Rugby League DNA being the niece of former NRL stars Brett and Glenn Stewart.

“They try to not to overload me, but they wished me good luck and gave me the rundown for today – be patient, be calm, play my game,” she said.

Steelers coach Courtney Crawford said her team was well aware of the Knights recent form after they beat Manly Warringah in an Elimination Final and then second-placed Canterbury-Bankstown in the Semis.

“It was our repeated efforts today that won it for us,” Crawford said.

“The girls worked hard for each other and that’s what they’ve done all year.

It counted in the end.”

Joining Reh on the presentation dias was Player of the Match and Steelers centre Indie Bostock, whose double in the first half set the platform.

The spoils were shared at half-time at three tries apiece although Illawarra led 18-12.

The difference came down to the accuracy of Steelers hooker Chelsea Savill who landed all three conversions, where Knights goal-kicker Lilly McNamara had an off day with the boot.

McNamara still had an impact after forcing a Steelers knock-on at the kick-off, and being on the end of the right-side shift that brought up Newcastle’s first points.

The Knights winger also featured in their second try 22 minutes later when she darted towards the Steelers line before the next play went right again for centre Aylah McCulloch to score.

The Steelers third try came in the shadow of the half-time hooter, when hooker Malaki Poa darted over from dummy-half.

Then up stepped Bostock, the younger sister of Dolphins winger Jack Bostock, for her two tries – her second a spectacular 85-metre run after a dummy left defenders flat-footed.

The first in the 13th minute wasn’t bad either. Reh sent a kick cross-field which Bostock gratefully accepted before scooting to the line.

The grind really began in the second half as both sides went set for set.

In fact the first points of the half – a try to interchange forward Bronte Wilson – didn’t come until eight minutes from full-time. She was put into a yawning gap by Reh – her second try assist.

Savill kept her 100% conversion rate intact to push the Steelers out to the eventual fulltime score of 24-12.
