Palm Beach 2023 Langer Trophy Champions

Langer Trophy grand final live stream: Ipswich SHS take on Palm Beach Currumbin SHS in decider

Gold Coast juggernauts Palm Beach Currumbin handled the pressure of a frantic final minute in a come-from-behind championship win.

Watch the Langer Trophy grand final REPLAY.

Watch a full replay of Palm Beach Currumbin SHS v Ipswich SHS.

Palm Beach Currumbin SHS wrote another milestone moment for the school’s time capsule with a rousing Langer Trophy premiership win over Ipswich SHS at Langlands Park.

Like a boa constrictor creeping toward its prey, PBC exerted tremendous second half pressure to win the battle for field position and claim a 16-12 come-from-behind victory.

A second-half double for Palm Beach winger Sunny Kama all-but sealed victory for the Gold Coast nursery before a frantic final two minutes.

Ipswich managed to wriggle free of their rivals vice-like grip late in the second half when centre LJ Nonu created a try for his captain Oliva Iaulualo which cut the deficit to just four points.

A one-on-one steal on the final hooter gave the reigning champions one final shot at pulling off the unthinkable.

But Palm Beach held on for dear life, forcing the ball over the touchline to kick off massive celebrations.

Palm Beach’s Zane Harrison saved a try late with his cover defence, and his goal kicking also proved the difference.

What a match it was.

Ipswich led 6-0 at halftime on the back of a five star performance from rough and tumble winger Alton Naiyep, scoring in typically robust fashion.

On a normal day three or four more tries would have been scored, but not on grand final day as both sides scrambled impressively on their goal lines.

Creedence Donovan on Naiyep and Jac Finigan on Keisaia Su’A saved tries for PBC, while Naiyep returned serve to deny Donovan and Nonu grimly halted PBC spearhead Sam Stephenson.

It was a rollercoaster opening salvo, which set the tone for a thrilling finish.

Palm Beach Currumbin will have little time to savour victory ahead of a Phil Hall Cup showdown next Wednesday against Mackay’s St Patrick’s College.

“Who handles the pressure best on grand final day will win the title.”

Palm Beach Currumbin SHS coach Tim Maccan is certainly speaking from experience.

Maccan’s Reds will confront Ipswich SHS on Wednesday in a replay of last year’s Langer Trophy decider. Ipswich took the title in 2022 and went ont to be crowned national champions by beating Patrician Brothers Fairfield.

“The best team does not always win on grand final day. The team that best handles that pressure, that is who is going to win,’’ says Maccan, who has taken PBC SHS to the last two deciders.

Unlike last year when Ipswich SHS were slight favourites, they will be underdogs this time around after fielding a side with few survivors from last year’s history-making deeds.

PLAYERS WE CAN’T WAIT TO SEE IN THE FINALS

Jett Jackson and Jac Finegan of PBC SHS

“It is a different journey, and a different group of boys and there have been very different experiences this year,’’ said coach Joshua Bretherton.

“Given the nature of the journey, it feels a little bit giddy. Are we supposed to be here? How good is this.’’

“We have never, ever had to deal with being the team everyone comes after and, at different times, we have not managed that really well.

“We have been inconsistent, but I am really proud of what the boys have done in the last two weeks to manage the pressure of the situations.’’

LANGER TROPHY PLAYERS TO WATCH

Zane Harrison and Bailey McConnell (PBC SHS)

PBC SHS has an extraordinary knack of producing playmakers and Harrison and McConnell are maintaining this proud tradition.

Last weekend, Tom Weaver (class of 2021) made his NRL debut for the Gold Coast – and he was one of six starting NRL halves from PBC SHS who played across the round.

The others were Tom Dearden (Cowboys), Cody Walker (South Sydney), Toby Sexton (Canterbury), Jamal Fogarty (Raiders) and Jahrome Hughes (Storm).

A proud PBC SHS coach Tim Maccan with one of his former star pupils – Tom Weaver

That is an All-Star cast, but Harrison and McConnell don’t have to live up to those past players because just being themselves is good enough and has got PBC into another decider.

Watching Harrison play is like seeing patches of Weaver and Josh Lynn (2021-22) on rewind.

His control, his attacking kicks and the way he plays to his ability is impressive.

IN PICTURES – 100 IMAGE GALLERY OF SEMI-FINAL DAY

McConnell has a little more flair, someone who can take the game on with his own spritely runs, trigger an edge movement, as he did for Baylen Donald to create a try against Marsden, or add to support play down the middle.

He was dominant after Harrison missed the opening three rounds due to injury.

Bailey McConnell, Ray Puru, Zane Harrison and Will Saunders

Ray Puru and Will Saunders (PBC SHS)

Saunders has been a revelation this season with his dummy half play.

Like PBC SHS hookers from earlier this decade, Oksar Bryant and Tanu Nona, Saunders has a long pass from the ruck which opens up the field for his halfback Zane Harrison, while also giving his No. 7 a split second more time.

But he can scamper away from dummy half against tiring defenders, or run and engage the ruck defenders before unloading.

Throw a roaming Puru into the fray and you have a potent ruck cocktail.

Puru, a fullback, returned from injury in the semi-final against Marsden SHS and aided PBC SHS’s running game and speed with the ball around the ruck.

He is a smaller body, which makes him a harder target for big middle forwards to nail.

Tyler Peckham-Harris and Lesayne Tuiasau (Ipswich SHS)

Last year Ipswich had Gabriel Satrick and Tommy Luhrman (hookers), this year they have Peckham-Harris and Tuiasau.

Peckham-Harris will start at hooker and Tuiasau at prop, but Tuiasau is quick, fearless and can fill in at hooker to allow for Peckham-Harris to inject himself elsewhere.

They are a dangerous combination and with Sam Martin coming off the bench, Ipswich will be well equipped to combat the tricks of Saunders.

Ipswich hooker Tyler Peckham-Harris

Alton Naiyep (Ipswich SHS)

Perhaps the best finisher in the competition. Naiyep, a Manly-signed winger gets Ipswich onto the front foot with his carries, and is safe under the high ball. He will instil confidence in his teammates just by lurking on the edge.

Oliva Iaulualo (Ipswich)

The mobile second rower is capable of anything. He can assist by breaking the line and getting an offload away or score with sheer strength. Iaulualo is the full package and without jinxing him, he is made for the big moments.

Dolphins Cup Round 4

Schoolboy Cup Live Stream: St Brendan’s v The Cathedral College, Dolphins Cup, Round 4

A crafty kick through to their flying winger has helped St Brendan’s claim a win on the final siren. Watch the REPLAYS.

Watch a full replay of St Brendan’s College v TCC (Cup).

A try on the final siren to flying winger Mataio Tapau-Bon stole a late victory for St Brendan’s after a back-and-forth slugfest against rivals The Cathedral College.

The flying winger showed his extreme turn of foot to scorch defenders and dive on a Tommy Green grubber with less than two minutes to go to seal an 8-6 win for the St Brendan’s side.

It will be a bitter pill to swallow for The Cathedral College, who had fought valiantly to repel their heavyweight rivals for most of the 60 minutes and had gone ahead after a scintillating sideline conversion from dummy-half Zac Bateman.

WATCH THE DOLPHINS CUP REPLAY IN THE PLAYER ABOVE

The rivalry between St Brendan’s and The Cathedral College is one of the biggest in Queenslajnd school footy and this match proved exactly why.

Both schools came out all guns blazing – with the two forward packs not willing to give an inch to their rivals.

But it was the individual brilliance of halfback Tommy Green trhat would break the deadlock, with the crafty no. 7 fooling the defence with a simple show-and-go before powering over the top of fullback Francis Darkin.

While it appeared St Brendan’s had broken the TCC shackles, the Rockhampton school refused to let them gain the immediate upper hand.

TCC seemed almost invigorated by going behind on the scoreboard, suddenly they hit harder and ran faster.

The Rockhampton nursery had to wait until midway through the second half to finally break through the St Brendan’s defence, but once they did, they looked almost unstoppable.

That was until the coll-handed Green found his flying winger in the final moment.

REPLAY: Dolphins Cup Round 4 – St Brendan’s College v TCC (Challenge)

Preview: The Cathedral College sweat on star fullback’s fitness

The Cathedral College coaching staff will decide on the weekend if their flying fullback, Mutua Brown, will line up for the Round 4 clash in the Dolphins Cup on Tuesday.

TCC heads to Yeppoon to take on St Brendan’s College in the Cup at 5.30pm and the Dolphins Challenge at 4.30pm – and you can watch the action live on KommunityTV via this website.

Brown would be a welcome inclusion in TCC’s Cup line-up but he has had a demanding schedule in the past few weeks.

He starred for Queensland at the national secondary schools rugby league championships, earning national selection, and on Thursday night was in the Maroons under-19 side which went down to New South Wales.

TCC’s Mick Busby said Brown would be given every chance to play on Tuesday.

“We’ll assess him when he gets back over the weekend. Obviously, if he can play, it will be very handy for us,” he said.

TCC will be without several players who were injured at the recent Confraternity Carnival, where the team finished seventh.

Hooker Zack Bryce suffered a season-ending knee injury, Ernest Walker is out with a shoulder injury and fellow forward Zac Bateman is also in doubt.

Busby said they would be looking for big performances from Brown, second rower Jack Biles, centre Toby Bateman and halfback Curtis Seierup against Confro champions St Brendan’s.

“They’ll be fighting on and doing the best they can,” he said.

Revealed: Fuzzy reward for TCC team after historic Confro win

“We’ve just got to stay in the grind, try to match them in the middle and go from there.

“I don’t know what St Brendan’s side will be in regards to who they have or haven’t got but we have to try to make it hard for whoever we’re up against.

“We’re currently in the top four and we need one more win to secure our spot in that top four and hopefully that can happen on Tuesday.”

The Langer Trophy and Walters Cup competitions will reach fever pitch this week when News Corp live stream semi-finals on Wednesday and Thursday.

Wednesday’s two Langer Trophy (NRL Schoolboys Cup) blockbusters feature unbeaten Ipswich SHS against Marsden SHS, and a Gold Coast derby between PBC SHS and Keebra Park SHS.

The www.couriermail.com.au, the Gold Coast Bulletin and affiliates will live stream the two Langer semi-finals on Wednesday (plus one Langer reserve game), and also the Walters Cup on Thursday (including another Langer reserve match).

MATCH REPLAYS: RELIVE ALL THE QUARTERFINAL ACTION HERE

And as a bonus for subscribers, the historic Dolphins Cup grand final between St Brendan’s College v The Cathedral College will also be streamed on Wednesday at 2pm, wedged between the Langer semi-final matches.

Mabel Park SHS’s Tarawa Latu (No.12) shakes heads with with PBC SHS players Keano Kini, Tanu Nona and Isaiah Scanlan.

In what has been another bumper season, below we reveal the most improved players across both the Langer and Walters competitions.

Marsden SHS

Apa Twidle (Langer)

In his first ever season at fullback, Twidle has continued to go from strength to strength.

He has found a great balance between challenging the defence with his running and then utilising his pass options to deceive the defence.

Alize Clarke (Walters): Clarke scored a hattrick against Mabel Park and this follows some really strong performances across the competition. A fast outside back, Clarke has gained more confidence as the season has gone.

Mabel Park

Tarawa Latu (Langer)

Edge backrower Latu has an outstanding work ethic and has gone from being on the bench at the start of the season to cementing a spot in the starting side. Has worked hard at training and it’s paying dividends on the field.

Benji Quinlan (Walters Cup)

The Mabel Year 10 student arrived at Mabel as a backup half but through his own hard work, determination and desire to improve, he has now converted to a ball playing lock with a strong carry. His defence in the middle has improved from week to week.

Boston Riggs-Albert:

Biggs-Albert impressed coach Sam Meskell by working “extremely hard on preparing himself physically’’.

“Boston is very coachable so he has improved in a lot of areas, most notably his understanding of defensive play in the middle and he has also developed a pass into his game,’’ Meskell said.

Isaiah Scanlan of PBC SHS is tackled against Wavell SHS. Pics Adam Head

PBC SHS

Barney Litidamu (Langer)

Centre Litidamu originally hails from the sporting rich Darling Downs pastures.

A Fijian with great speed and power, he has done a great job at centre in the absence of injured Australian schoolboy Michael Roberts, while also being a capable edge second rower.

Coach Tim Maccan had him in his Tweed Seagulls Meninga Cup side earlier in the year and knew he could count on him.

Palm Beach Currumbin SHS’s Barney Litidamu (centre). Picture: Matthew Poon

Isiah Scanlan (Langer)

Scanlan is a survivor from PBC SHS’s championship 2021 winning side when he came off the bench, a middle forward who has taken his team to a new level across the season.

When PBC SHS were gutted from its premiership winning side, Scanlan stood up to lead the new players in the team and show them what it is all about.

Hai Hiawe King (Walters Cup). A tough as teak young prop with plenty of go forward.

Ipswich SHS

Anton Naiyep (Langer Trophy)

Ipswich SHS rugby league coordinator Josh Bretherton said Naiyep had made the most improvements to his game. “And we have seen that week in and week out from the dynamic and destructive winger,’’ he said.

Naiyep has proved how threatening he can be whether it is as a centre or winger, running the ball with fierce intent and is super strong into contact.

Cayleb Johnson playing Meninga Cup. Picture: Jerad Williams

Cayleb Johnson (Langer):

Johnson was Ipswich’s 18th man in the quarterfinals but ended up playing the entire home-and-away season in the Langer Trophy. What a remarkable effort that is.

When Ipswich returned to its full side, he just missed out but like every other member of this unbeaten Ipswich squad, has had his role to play in such a historic season.

“The improvement he has made over the year has been outstanding” Josh Bretherton said.

Bretherton said Xavier Sofeni, Caleb Jackson and Tyler- Peckham Harris had also “taken big jumps from last year.”

Ipswich SHS players celebrate a try earlier in the season, Picture: Patrick Woods.

Jackson has shone more than anyone could have foreseen, not only with his tryscoring but with the little aspects in his game that he has improved.

Harris has demonstrated how lethal and impactful he can be in the competition, despite being on the lighter side.

Kulu Baruani’s little brother Velonte has shone in Walters. Picture: Patrick Woods.

Walters Cup

Velonte Baruani:

Baruani was without a doubt Ipswich’s most improved for the year.

The Year 10, who is the brother to Langer Trophy wingers Kulu of Ipswich and Munga of Keebra Park.

Velonte took strides forward in his game, strengthening his case of wearing that Langer Trophy No.2 Jersey of his brothers in years to come.

Tahj Pagett:

The versatile halfback was another one of Ipswich’s big improvers over the year. Coach Shane Harris was very impressed with Pagett and Baruani’s progression this year.

Whether it was scoring tries of his own with fancy footwork or showing his vastly developed playmaking ability, Pagett was a clear pick.

Xzavier Timoteo:

Making the Queensland team was a huge jump for Timoteo, a fitting testament to the hard work he put in all season long to better himself as a rugby league player.

Honourable mention: Lorenzo Oliva

Redcliffe SHS players Toia, Cameron and Rauluni swarm in defence to tackle Te Anau Graham-Papalii (Image/Josh Woning)

Redcliffe SHS

Blake Kehl (Langer):

The hard working, dedicated Hehl has shown great improvement this year.

“It has been great to see how Blake has taken on the challenge of being the key playmaker in our team,’’ said Redcliffe SHS’s head of rugby league Jake Laack.

“Blake’s ability to sum up the situation and take on the line is something that has been important for us in 2022.”

Keebra Park SHS

Wailer Whaiapu (Langer)

Whaiapu, a year 11 student, broke into the Langer last season as a Year 10 student when an injury crisis forced veteran coach Glen Campbell to search the Walters Cup for a Langer bench player.

Campbell decided the best performomg forward in the first half of the Walters Cup game would be taken out of the game and promoted onto the Langer bench an hour later. That player turned out to be Whaiapu.

Wailer Whaiapu from Keebra Park SHS is a big improver.

Keebra Park SHS coach Peter Norman said during the off-season he identified Whaiapu was a terrific defender, but not as effective carrying the ball and as a result was asked to work on his carries.

He responded positively and is Norman’s pick as the team’s most improved player in 2022, alongside Dorian Lotaki.

Dorian Lotaki (Langer)

Keebra Park SHS coach Peter Norman said when Keebra SHS dropped off as a team in their last two matches of the home and away season against Redcliffe SHS and Mabel Park SHS, centre Lotaki never dropped his standards, playing tough for the team.

Wailer Whaiapu from Keebra Park SHS is a big improver.

Wavell SHS

Kobi Floro (Walters Cup)

The local junior grew in the Stafford region and has gone on to do his local high school, Wavell SHS, proud across the season.

Ethan Jones (Langer Cup): Jones is an effort on effort player who was able to give the Warriors impact off the bench while maintaining a high standard in defence.

The Brisbane Broncos were again proud to sponsor the premier Schoolboy Rugby League competitions in South East Queensland, with the Grand Finals of each of these competitions being played last week.

Over the past twenty years, the Broncos have invested over 1.5 million dollars into Schoolboy Rugby League, where competitions are played at all levels from regionally through to the South East.

Sponsoring approximately fifteen school-based competitions throughout Queensland each year, Broncos funding is used to offset transportation costs, sports medicine, referee expenses, as well as awards.

Over fifty secondary schools compete in the Broncos sponsored school competitions, with Marsden State High School taking out the 2021 Allan Langer Trophy and the Broncos Old Boys Grand Finals.

Broncos Challenge schoolboy rugby league

Broncos Challenge schoolboy rugby league Team of the Grand Finals – 20 of Queensland’s best rookies revealed after five youth grand finals.

The winning PBC SHS year 8 Renouf Shield side. Broncos Challenge Team of Grand Finals

We named the Team of the Grand Finals after the five 2021 Broncos Challenge schoolboy rugby league grand finals played over the last 48 hours.

On Tuesday Marsden SHS won the year 7 Broncos Old Boys Cup, while PBC claimed the year 8 Renouf Shield, then yesterday PBC SHS twice beat Keebra Park SHS (Hancock and Walters Cup) while Wavell won after the bell in the Langer reserves over Marsden SHS.

Matches were livestreamed by News Corp and featured among the best rising talent in the state.

PBC SHS Renouf Shield coach Geoff Eggart said it was a great win by his side to topple the benchmark outfit of the competition – Marsden SHS.

The Marsden State High year 7 rugby league side that won the Brisbane Broncos Old Boys grand final at Carina.

“We basically lost one game to Redcliffe the whole competition and Marsden have been the benchmark all year so we were just delighted to get the chocolates. They worked really hard,’’ Eggart said.

Marsden SHS Old Boys (year 7) competition coach Cameron Webb said it was a great team performance to finish off the season with a win over Ipswich SHS.

Nayten Iselin-Jansen with Mick De Vere from the Broncos.

“It was a team performance. There were a number of players who put up their hands. That was the real strength of his team – that there was 13 and not relying on one or two to get the job done. “They came together to work as a unit.’’

Marsden SHS beat Ipswich SHS well, but Ipswich still showed plenty of promise – according to our Ipswich reporter Daviid Lems who named their best players here.

Then yesterday Wavell SHS coach Mick Roberts, who has seen plenty in rugby league, was stunned to see his five-eight Nayten Iselin-Jansen field a drop kick restart 65m out as the full-time hooter sounded, and then score to break a 12-all deadlock.

Man of the match Marlie Barry of PBC with the great Matt Gillett of the Broncos.

Iselin-Jansen was the last to board the team bus after the match and was beaming like a boy about to sit on Santa’s lap.

Marsden SHS fullback Dom Sandow and Wavell SHS hooker Harri Sykes also shone in an all-star match, while Marsden pair Marley Lupeomanu and Jermaine Pangai impacted their side.

On the Gold Coast, PBC SHS were confirmed as the 2021 SEQ schoolboy champions with wins in the Hancock and Walters Cups – following last week’s NRL Schoolboys Cup win over Marsden SHS.

That made it four premierships for PBC SHS from six grand finals.

Yesterday in the Hancock Cup PBC SHS centre Sunny Karma was presented with the man of the match award, while Keebra Park SHS’s prop Micah Eteru and PBC SHS fullback Sam Stephenson also shone.

In the Walters Cup PBC SHS’s Jaylan Taewa scored the go-ahead try in the second-half and was near-perfect from the tee, most from the sideline, in a great individual performance. One of his tries was set up by interchange player Reshawn Anderson.

PBC SHS Zane Harrison made some early errors but his constant voice and playmaking presence in the middle of the park was key to PBC’s success, while Keebra Park centre Dorian Lotaki scored a great bustling try and shone for his side.Special mention for two players who narrowly missed our squad, Kallum Stacey-Weatherall (Wavell SHS Langer Reserves who was a Langer Trophy standard player, and Marsden SHS five-eighth Caleb Cresswell (Marsden SHS, year 7) who sparked his team.

Two down, three to go – that’s the challenge facing Redcliffe State High School’s Rugby League Program of Excellence in the next three weeks.

Program director Scott Murray is aiming to get all five teams into the Brisbane Broncos/QSSRL top schools’ competitions in South East Queensland.

It is a feat Murray and the Broncos believe Redcliffe State High School has not achieved in the 20 years the events have been run.

Qualified

Redcliffe’s Year 7 and Year 8 teams are already through having qualified for the Brisbane Broncos Old Boys Trophy and (Steve) Renouf Shield respectively.

The Year 7s lost 14-4 to Marsden, but roared back beating Stretton, Coombabah, Mabel Park and Alexandra Hills without conceding a point!

The Year 9s are hoping to join them tomorrow (April 20) when they face three pool matches and then (hopefully) a final at Stafford.

Holiday training

Preparation for these (Michael) Hancock Cup qualifiers included going into school on the last day of their Easter holidays for training.

Redcliffe’s Opens (Years 11-12) have a semi-final against Alexandra Hills at Wynnum on May 5 in their quest to reach the (Allan) Langer Trophy.

The Year 10s are preparing for a one-off final on May 12 – opponents to be decided – to reach the (Kevin) Walters Cup.

Confident

“Definitely feeling confident,” says Murray, who joined the program in 2015, “the Year 9s have been improving all the time and had great results going into this competition.

“The Year 10s have certainly got a chance. They have been good in trial matches and I think we have our strongest Opens team for quite a few years.

“Getting all our teams into the Broncos competitions would be a great boost for the program.

“We have been working hard and building. If we don’t achieve it this year, I think the program will do it soon.”

Star pupils

The current Year 12 players have been right through the program with Murray, being the Year 7s when he started in 2015.

The Redcliffe SHS Program of Excellence is in its 21st year and has produced NRL stars such as Queensland and Australia half-back Daly Cherry-Evans, Queensland and Broncos forward Josh Maguire and Josh Kerr, a forward at St George Dragons.

The course covers six semesters in Years 7-9 on skills and physical development with three lessons per week, plus competitions and camps.

This leads into the Senior School Program of Excellence for Years 10-12, with three lessons each week, a three-day camp, refereeing certificate and fitness qualification.
