Canada rugby league plan historic summer

It will the busiest summer in their history, with Canada’s men’s, women’s and U19s men’s teams making pioneering tours to Europe.

“Our teams are excited to head over, this is a big moment for the sport here,” said Canada Rugby League Association president, John Cameron.

“In order to get better and climb the rankings associated with that, we need to grow our domestic game, build our youth pipeline and get more varied international experience.

“Canada has a strong European connection as part of its modern founding, so culturally we have many similarities—many of our players have European ancestry.”

The men’s Wolverines arrive first and will take on Norway on Thursday 2 July in Lillestrøm, then head to Scotland to face the Bravehearts on Sunday 5 July in Hawick.

Their final match is the following weekend against Netherlands in Rotterdam on Saturday 11 July. It will be their first visit to Europe since they faced Serbia in September 2019.

“All of the men’s nations are ranked above us so we’re not going to presuppose our performance, but usually unknown opponents on both sides will make for entertaining games,” Cameron commented.

The women’s Ravens will face Wales in Neath on Sunday 19 July, then Scotland at Hawick on Saturday 25 July for the final encounter of their trip.

Having beaten Ireland to third place in the IRL Women’s Rugby League World Series at home last autumn, it presents an opportunity for Canada to measure themselves against the remaining Celtic Nations.

Cameron confirmed: “One key focus for the Ravens – much like the Wolverines – has been building our development pipeline.

Supporting that is our growing international talent which is actively involved in Super League now.

“Our women’s nationals this month in Vancouver is aligned to help identify some of this new talent, in order to involve them going forward.”

All five games will count for world ranking points as senior international matches.

Additionally, Canada’s U19s men’s side will enter the European Rugby League U19s Championship for the first time to be held in July at Font Romeu, France, where they will face Norway (12 July), Greece (15 July) and Ireland (18t July) in the Shield competition.

“Our U19s are the best thing to happen to the CRLA in years,” said Cameron.

“Not only is it giving our Wolverines a constant pipeline, but we’re also attracting talented players and volunteers.

It has also helped field more matches for our domestic teams.

I really need to thank our coaches Rhys Jacks and Stephen Lenahan on developing such a strong group of boys.

“More time on the pitch, with more participants is our overall goal. This not only builds experience but attracts sponsor interest. It also makes for a more sustainable programme.”

He added: “This year we are recording constant activity across all fronts from youth to masters – more games and greater coverage including live streaming of almost all domestic games.”

England and Wales women name 19-player squads

England and Wales women have announced 19-player squads for their senior international for world ranking points at AMT Headingley Stadium, Leeds tomorrow, Saturday (kick off noon).

England have five potential debutants in their squad, with Huddersfield’s Amelia Brown along with Leeds prop Izzy Northrup and St Helens’ Erin Stott expected to play.

Wigan pair Jenna Foubister and Mary Coleman are also included. England women’s head coach, Stuart Barrow – who has Hollie Mae-Dodd available for the first time since she moved to Canberra Raiders in 2023.

“Selection for Saturday’s game has been really challenging but that’s because we have a talented group that’s full of potential.

We have several new names coming into the team and I’m confident that with the guidance of some of our senior internationals that they will be able to take on the challenge that lies ahead against Wales.”

Since the previous meeting between the sides at the same venue a year ago, Wales have qualified for the Women’s World Cup for the first time, to be held in Australia and Papua New Guinea in 2026 having seen off Netherlands and Ireland in qualifying.

Bethan Dainton is set to captain the team at the home of her club side after missing last year, while Emily Hughes – who played in the inaugural WRL Women’s game – returns for the first time since 2022 due to injury.

Wales women’s head coach, Tom Brindle, said: “Facing England is always a big game for us.

We’re an ambitious team and testing ourselves against one of the world’s best is key to our long-term goals. We’re still early in our journey as an international team, and we’ve progressed each year from our modest base.

“Qualifying for the World Cup at our first attempt was a milestone but our aim is to compete at the level of the established, professionally run teams.

We showed glimpses of that last year, and Saturday gives us another great opportunity to see how far we’ve come and how close we are to closing the gap.”

The match is part of a double-header, with England men playing Samoa afterwards.

Domestic season set to kick off in Uganda

Five women’s and four men’s teams across three regions will take part in the 2024 domestic season in Uganda.

Matches will be played in a series of regional tournaments which will commence with the western region teams taking on sides from central on May 1 and 2.

Eastern sides will host western on June 15 and 16, with teams from central facing those from the east on August 28 and 29.

The top two men’s and women’s sides at the culmination of the tournament stages will play in the respective Grand Finals.

There is a new side in both competitions, Bulucheke from the Bududu district in the eastern region. Team manager, Muntaki Gerald, commented:

“We are excited to be in a competitive structure. We have only been playing the sport a short time and, as underdogs, we hope to learn a lot from being in the championship.”

Baleen are the defending women’s champions and Beluga the men’s. Beluga captain, Isaac Mutyaba, commented: “We don’t want to give up what we worked so hard to gain last year.

We expect a lot of entertainment and excitement and being part of a national trial selection at the same time, all players will put in a lot of energy.”

Baleen captain, Lucky Nirere, noted: “We have had a month-long camp in January to prepare and there have been a lot of new recruits.

We are looking forward to the kick off and helping to spread the ‘Let the Girl Play’ campaign, we shall surely put on a beautiful show and try to keep the title.”

Fortunate Irankunda, the education leader of Rugby League Uganda, noted:

“I am impressed with the way the clubs keep growing the game, aided by the Whales Academy staff who don’t stop moving from region to region to share more knowledge and to ensure the players are getting the right basics.

And to our dear partners York Knights and Valkyrie for keeping us moving one step at a time.”

Women’s and Youth 9s Champions decided in Ghana

Accra Panthers Women and African Warriors Youth Academy have been crowned Ghana Rugby League 9s champions.

At the end of a two weekend competition at the University of Ghana’s Ajax Park in Legon.

Panthers were unbeaten in taking out the inaugural women’s title.

Amassing 18 points across the fortnight, Warriors sitting top of their standings with 16 points in the first junior men’s competition.

“The levels of skill, team organization and desire to play that were on display were highly commendable,” said GRLF general manager, Jafaru Mustapha,

“It is very positive for our game seeing such a high level of competition from various clubs.

On our tenth anniversary, this marks a significant development for the sport here.”

In attendance were Prince Emeka Nwankwo, who served as the special guest of honour, James Odoi Wilson (municipal director of sports for Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly).

Hon. Teddy Kwei Baddoo (assembly member for Abelenkpe Electoral Area and chairman of the Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly’s Sports Committee).

Emmanuel Osabutey, (technical director Greater Accra Regional Sports Authority), and Edward Kwame Kpeglo (Adenta municipal director of sports).

The final of the men’s competition – which has featured seven clubs – between Nungua Tigers, who defeated the Panthers 6-0 in their semi final.

And Ghana Skolars, who beat Pirates 12-6 in theirs, is scheduled for this Sunday, 27 March at Ajax Park.

England Women defeat Wales in impressive showing

England Women earned an emphatic 60-0 victory over Wales in their first international outing since 2019 at Warrington’s Halliwell Jones Stadium.

There were ten different scorers for Craig Richards’ side with Captain Emily Rudge notching a double. International debutants Fran Goldthorp and Hollie Dodd also found themselves on the scoresheet.

Carrie Roberts – making her first international appearance since 2015 – opened the scoring for the hosts after just two minutes however Wales would keep England from adding to their early score until midway through the first half.

Tara Jones would eventually capitalise on a Welsh mistake before St Helens teammate Jodie Cunningham powered her way over. Shona Hoyle would complete a run of three tries inside six minutes for England.

With nine minutes remaining in the first half, Leeds winger Goldthorp would score out wide after going close earlier in the evening. Georgia Roche rounded off the first half scoring under the posts to give Richards’ side a 34-0 lead at the interval.

Rudge sliced through the Welsh defence just seconds after the break to continue where England left off prior to half-time. Caitlin Beevers followed with a try on the 50-minute mark.

Georgia Wilson entered the fray for the final 20 minutes and found her herself on the receiving end of a looping pass before Rudge doubled her account for the evening.

Castleford Tigers youngster Hollie Dodd finished the scoring with some neat footwork just before the full-time hooter.
