Wales win fourth u16 four nations title

Wales remain unbeaten in the U16s Four Nations Championship, picking up their fourth successive title when they defeated England 30-10 in a winner-takes-all clash at the Gnoll in Neath.

Loose forward Rhys Wood led them to glory with two tries in a dominant second half, after the hosts led 10-4 at the break.

Wales U16s head coach, Tom Marsh, commented:

“It’s a brilliant result, England were really tough with their greater experience but our lads stuck to their task and dealt with it amazingly.

We give lads great opportunities and letting them see professional environments and they have really bought into it, they’ve been training since January and amazing all year.

“There’s a pathway there and the talent we’ve got in South Wales is fantastic.”

Wales took the lead in the seventh minute, prop Danny Jones creating a try for Max Phillips who dived over in the corner.

England levelled through winger Jaden Udegbe with the first of his two tries, spurning another opportunity soon after when spilling the ball diving for the line.

The hosts were back in front when stand off Jack Parrott cleverly offloaded to Leighton Clarke, Parrott converting with the first of his three goals.

Wales started the second period impressively, Alfie Davies and Mason Lewis crossing in quick succession, Wood then claiming his brace.

The only black mark for the Welsh were two dismissals, Danny Jones with his second red card of the tournament for a head butt and, after the final whistle, Cyrus Owen-Green shown one for striking.

In the other encounter on the final weekend of competition, Scotland opened and closed the scoring but Ireland were the stronger side throughout, winning 34-14 in Hawick.

Blair Murray crossed for the home side in the ninth minute, but the Irish were 18-4 ahead at the interval courtesy of touchdowns by Oscar Bradley, Callum McDonald and Noah Walsh, each of which Joseph Clarke improved.

Clarke went over twice on the resumption to finish with an 18-point haul, and Bradley claimed his second score on 52 minutes.

Scotland posted consolation touchdowns by Jay Cruikshank and Murray again, with Reece McAdam adding a conversion.

U17 INTERNATIONAL

England had too much experience for Wales in an U17 friendly fixture at the Gnoll, the visitors winning 46-4.

They took an early lead when Mason Hunter forced his way over in the corner, converting his own try, but it took until ten minutes before half-time for them to score their second.

England were a lot stronger in the second half, York, and Hunter each registering their second touchdown.

Josh Williams claimed England’s fifth try, Will Steen goaling, Zach Dennett then crossing in the corner and, from kick-off, York completing his hat-trick.

Wales gained reward for their efforts with six minutes to go, Ben Foskett over between the posts and Elliott Williams landing the conversion, but England had the final say when Zac Law scored their eighth try.

Wales and England Community Lions emerged triumphant in the U16s and U18s Four Nations competitions respectively.

For Wales it was the third time in succession they have won the U16s title, beating England 18-0 in the deciding game at Halton Farnworth Hornets.

The margin of defeat meant that Ireland clinched second spot on points’ difference in the closest competition to date since the annual tournament was introduced in 2023.

“The players have worked very hard for six months to get to this point” noted Wales head coach Paul Berry.

“In the decider we were very good in the first twenty minutes before it became a scrappy game in the heat, but that’s the sign of a champion team that you can still come up with the win.”

A domestic quota was put in place and exceeded in all games with at least six home-produced players being involved in the matchday squads, demonstrating progression in all of the countries and a reduction in the reliance on heritage players.

Biennial U18s tournament

The biennial U18s tournament, which alternates with the European U19s championship, saw England go through undefeated.

“We saved our best performance to the end for the winner takes all game against Wales, keeping them to zero,” commented England coach, Gary Hewer.

England and Wales are more dominant at this age group owing to more developed domestic competition, but again the domestic quota was exceeded by all four nations.

“It is fantastic to see the U16s and U18s Four Nations Competitions continuing to flourish and improve in standard,” said IRL head of membership and competitions, David Butler.

“This year’s competitions have raised the bar in terms of standard and awareness, with all sides focussing their efforts on promoting the fixtures and increasing the coverage and we’ve seen some very healthy attendances at games.

We will review collectively over the next couple of months and start the planning again for next year.”

Midlands Junior playing opportunities to expand in a summer of rugby league activity

The weekend of 31st May 2025 heralds the return of competitive junior rugby league as the new Midlands Junior Merit Leagues for U15s and U17s begin.

This initiative has been some time in planning and is the culmination of volunteers’ work to establish further long-term strategy to the growing Midlands Rugby League scene.

In a move to create a league-based round robin of fixtures for those teams able to commit, it is the next step in creating a formal competitive season for a range of age groups across the Midlands region.

At U15s level

At U15s level, teams from NEW Ravens, Sherwood Wolfhunt, Leamington Royals and a joint team from Bassetlaw Bulldogs and North Midlands Knights (formerly Bolsover Bulls) will participate in the 6-round competition.

At U17s level

At U17s, Bassetlaw Bulldogs, Coventry Bears, North Midland Knights and a West Midlands All-stars team will make up the roster.

As part of the emerging Merit League system, teams will play home and away fixtures against their peers, being awarded points for winning, drawing, turning up and playing with full teams.

Further to the league structure – and alongside stand-alone fixtures between clubs – there will be further playing opportunities across the region with 6 summer festivals taking place for Primary-aged players and teams at U12s, U14s and U16s.

The festivals have been designed to ensure high-quality experiences for players, with hosts working towards a standardised format to ensure maximum enjoyment and participation.

Festivals at Coventry

Festivals at Coventry, Nottingham, NEW Ravens, Bassetlaw, Sherwood and North Midlands Knights are spread throughout the summer months. Organisers are delighted also to welcome back title sponsors, Paladin Sports UK for a second year.

Speaking of his delight at the prospect, Midlands Steering Group Chair, Phil Abbott enthused: “So much hard work has gone into making this happen, by a group of dedicated volunteers at Steering Group level.

We are absolutely delighted to get the new Merit Leagues off the ground and are excited to see just how well they can run this season. Feedback from those clubs taking part is already positive, in terms of the intrigue this is creating for players in those teams.

I am sure it won’t be all plain sailing, but we know that, for this region, if we don’t run with it now, we probably won’t for a long time.”

Abbott goes on to say

Abbott goes on to say: ‘We have worked to introduce some minimum standards for affiliate clubs to achieve over the course of the next 12 months.

These are designed to help us up our game as administrators and to enhance the experience of all participants within our clubs.

We think we have a great product in the game of rugby league, but too often in the past we have let talk come before action.

We want to make sure we do our talking on the pitch, that our thinking is strategic and for the good of the region, not just our own clubs.

We want to populate teams across the region with eager rugby league players so that everybody benefits from positive gamedays.

Speaking of the initiatives, Stephen Guan, RFL’s Southern Regions Development Manager said: ‘The work Phil and the steering group have done to progress this is tremendous.

It has been a collaborative approach from the group, working closely with the clubs and ourselves at the RFL to develop the Primary and Junior offers across the Midlands.

“There is a strong community club presence across the Midlands with nearly a dozen of these having Primary and Junior RL offers.

Having a suitable competition structure and development opportunities in place is invaluable for the growth of not only these clubs, players and volunteers but for the game as a whole across the Midlands.

“One objective of our Southern Regions Strategic Framework is to utilise the experience and knowledge of our volunteer workforce and support this to progress elements of the sport in the South, the work happening here is a prime example of this.”

England Community Lions v Western Australia

England Community Lions became the first touring side to beat Western Australia since 1975, battling to a 22-0 win in the First Test of the two-game series.

It was a performance full of character, with tough defence and attacking chances taken by the touring side.

It was a complete team performance with the sum of the parts greater than any individual.

The backs did a good job when things were difficult, communication and connection were evident, while the forwards continued to show up even at times when discipline lapsed and the visitors found themselves reduced to eleven men.

There was nothing in the game for much of the first half, and in fact, Western Australia had the better territory.

However, the Lions’ defence was superb against a big pack.

The tourists’ first opportunity came six minutes in, when from a penalty, they moved into the WA twenty, but home fullback Bailey Millar scooped up a low kick.

WA player-coach Delane Edwards broke in the next set only for the Lions to scramble and Craig McShane was tackled high behind his line by Duane Butler and a short skirmish brought nothing more than the drop out.

Leon Crellin came up with a great intercept in the 17th minute but was injured in the tackle and had to be withdrawn, although he did make a return in the second half.

Millar was held up over the line after 19 minutes, but the Lions struck right back with Ben Shulver winning consecutive penalties and Danny Rowse kicked the tourists into a 2-0 lead after 21 minutes.

Skipper Chris Siddons cut through the middle for the Lions but his pass only found WA hands and Jake Moore was sinbinned after 29 minutes following a clash with Corban Daniels.

Moments later, the Community Lions stretched their advantage when a Rowse torpedo kick bounced and the onrushing Lewis Price contested to collect and go past Te Toa Parkinson for the score and Rowse converted for an 8-0 advantage.

Keelyn Tuuta-Edwards bustled forward and two quick penalties brought another sinbin from referee Byron Devene as Elliott Cousins held on too long in the 34th minute.

Five minutes into the new half the Hunslet connection worked a treat as Danny Rowse put a towering kick up, Craig McShane chased through to collect and fired the pass left for Jake Dearden to slide over. Rowse goaled and it was 14-0.

Luke-David Wells-Talamaivao was put on report after 50 minutes for a challenge on Cousins, and the Lions rolled forward again.

Tuuta-Edwards had a try disallowed after 56 minutes for obstruction by Tyler Moeau. Moeau and Tuuta-Edwards conceded a further penalty after holding down Charlie Tomlinson and Rowse goaled from 35 metres.

Straight from the restart Craig and Jack McShane combined to cover forty metres.

Julian Wilson Wyllie was sinbinned for WA after 64 minutes and the Lions took advantage four minutes later.

A deep kick from Rowse drew an error from Millar and a quick scrum move saw Connor Parkinson feed before the ball was quickly worked to Craig McShane who released at just the right moment for Price to charge in at the corner for his second try.

Rowse converted from the touchline, his fifth goal, and the Lions defence roared them to a memorable victory.

In front of over a thousand fans at The Lextan Gnoll in Neath, Wales U16 pulled off an outstanding win against England to clinch the U16 Four Nations unbeaten for a second year in a row.

The two sides came into the game completely level on competition points and points difference, so the form would have said that this would be an even game.

However, it was anything but.

Wales were only 12-0 up at half-time thanks to two converted tries but they had three more disallowed.

It was only early in the mid stages of the second half where Wales made a few errors and completion rate went down that there were a few concerns.

They finished well to seal a well-deserved win, and still remain unbeaten in the two years that this tournament has been held.

With the majority of the Welsh players coming from the successful junior set-up in South Wales, where well over 2,000 children have been playing rugby league this summer, the win is a credit to both club and international coaches.

England nearly took the lead in the seventh minute.

Archie Storr thought he’d grounded but the referee ruled it out for a double movement.

The home side got near to the line five minutes later, Ralf Roberts looked for a try, diving over but he’d received a forward pass.

The Welsh looked like they’d scored a stunning try when Isaac Holdworth flicked the ball back to Jake Sheppard for him to ground, but the referee called it back for a knock-on.

Wales again looked to have taken the lead with 10 minutes remaining in the first half.

Jayden Tyson was sinbinned for a high tackle on Ralf Roberts. From the next play, Morgan Marozzelli ran over but referee Rob Apsee called it back for a forward pass.

But when Wales got the ball back again

But when Wales got the ball back again, they took the lead.

It was a fine passing move in the 27th minute that Elis Thomas finished off. Matthew Clatworthy converted well.

Only a dropped ball gave England an opportunity to score, but it was wasted – Bobby Dickinson’s grubber on the final tackle of the resulting set not being seen by any of his team-mates.

Again, when Wales got the ball back, they scored, and it only took them three tackles.

Sam Dickinson sprinted over 50 metres, placing the ball under the sticks making the kick easy for Clatworthy and giving Wales a well-deserved 12-0 lead at the break.

An error put England onto the attack early in the second half, but again couldn’t make their chances count.

Ellis Holliday attempted a try but his attempt at grounding was more akin to basketball and the try was ruled out.

England got a try back on 50 minutes after regaining possession through another Wales error and Travis Jack-Morse scoring in the corner.

Mason Bowes converted well.

Wales needed to tighten things up, and they did.

Jac Jones cleaned up some more England pressure and Wales turned defence into attack, producing a perfect set. Dickinson, Elis Thomas and Clatworthy were involved at the end, with Roberts scoring in the corner.

Clatworthy kicked the extras before adding a penalty a few minutes later to put the score on to 20-6.

The Welsh now needed to defend to keep their lead. After being penalised for off-side, they faced a set starting from their own 10 metre line.

On this occasion, they forced the England attackers into touch.

A dropped ball from Wales’ next set gave England another chance and this time they didn’t waste it as Jack-Morse scored his second of the game. Bowes couldn’t convert and Wales were still 10 points up with less than five minutes to go.

And Wales wrapped the game up with two minutes to go after England spilled the ball.

Dickinson didn’t let any English lads get in his way as he weaved through them to score. Clatworthy converted.

There was still time for Wales to put more icing on a very big cake.

Evan Williams sprinted past the tired English to score and Clatworthy goaled to cement their well-deserved large win.

France U17s v England Community Lions U17s Second Test

Another brave effort brought two second half tries for England Community Lions U17s before they were overpowered for the second time in four days by a strong France U17s in 30 degree heat in Nantes.

Early exchanges were ferocious with the likes of Matthew Creasey, Thomas Clarke and Matthew Eden following the lead of skipper Elijah Delaidriti before the French cut loose in the 6th minute with a try wide out on the left from Tom Zitter.

The Lions responded with some enthusiastic running from Jaylen Conway with Rio Walker also keen to impress on debut, and despite a promising break-out from France, when the water break came in the 20th minute it was still 0-4.

On resumption, Zitter set up another promising attack after collecting an angled low kick and the host’s second score followed after a 25th minute dummy-half surge from hooker Mahault Devilliers.

Mathis Dumont goaled.

A third try followed four minutes later on the back of a penalty concession with the ball worked right for Mickael Lallemand Rabasse to touch down.

Outstanding second row Steven Jocelyn added a fourth French try on the stroke of half-time with halfback Aymeric Papailhau slotting over the conversion for a 0-20 advantage at the break.

The Lions came out for the second period with renewed vigour, and it was captain Delaidriti who broke their duck with a rampaging carry that took him beyond three players and over the goal line in the 42nd minute.

Unfortunately his conversion went wide but it was 4-20 and the score gave the visitors plenty of enthusiasm.

This was further buoyed when centre Moulin Tetuira was sinbinned. Once again the Lions tried to go around their opponents but France launched a devastating counter when the ball was lost and fleet footed Toni Laporte scampered away from 30 metres.

Thomas Clarke was then shown a yellow card for the Lions before Conway ran strongly from the back.

Matthew Eden broke brilliantly through the middle and Delaidriti unlocked the defence with a grubbing kick left for Joseph Grifffiths to pounce at the corner to close the deficit to 8-24.

Into the final 20 minutes the visitors continued to battle hard and intelligent play won a drop out after 65 minutes. Despite some thunderous charges, France held firm and finally broke the defence with wide passing that brought the 68th minute score for Tetuira.

Injuries forced the Lions to activate their 18th man and Alfie Milton came on for the last ten minutes.

Eden was then sinbinned for slowing play down and France took full advantage with twelve points in the last four minutes to stretch their lead to 42-8 with Jocelyn’s second and Lorik LeJeune crossing the line and Papailhau kicking the final two goals.

France U17s v England Community Lions U17s First – Test Match Report

France Under 17s finished in dominant fashion eventually running seven tries past the England Community Lions U17s.

The Lions started slowly, conceding several penalties that put them under pressure, and were forced to move things about when Lewis Johnson received an early knock and had to be withdrawn.

After weathering an early storm, the touring team put together a couple of constructive sets themselves forcing a drop out while Danny Stables, Cassius Turner Walsh, and skipper Elijah Delaidriti all went close to points.

France then found themselves on the front foot and opened the scoring after eleven minutes when Steven Oscar Jocelyn burst through on an excellent line.

First Adrian De La Rose grounded despite the attention of three defenders before a smart runaround move inspired by Beauvilliers opened up some space and Lorik LeJeune, a recent star on the Provence Du Sud tour of the UK, supported to score.

Dumont goaled both and added a penalty on the stroke of half-time after skipper Delaidriti was sin-binned for the Lions.

This opened a 0-18 advantage that was stretched by a further two points when Dumont added a penalty after the Lions were penalised for overzealous kick pressure.

A couple of minutes after that, Seth Woodend was sin-binned along with Beauvilliers following what looked to be a tip tackle on the Lion and a short flashpoint.

The Lions defended manfully for the next five minutes until the return of their skipper before swift passing from an attacking scrum play resulted in Leny Stacul dotting down at the corner to move the score to 0-24.

Just after the hour, Nate Parker was adjudged to have said something out of turn and was shown the yellow card.

This left the Lions short again, and France took advantage working further space down the right for Stacul to add his second try.

Two more tries came against a tired defence in the last ten minutes as Thibault Guilhaumo drifted out of dummy-half to run 20 metres and then the outstanding Dumont fittingly grabbed the final points with a quicksilver try and his sixth goal to wrap up the 0-40 win.

The Lions will regroup over the weekend and prepare for the series’ final game on Monday evening.
