Rising Shark Williams crowned top NSW schoolboy athlete

In the midst of his first NRL pre-season, promising young Shark Nikora Williams has received one of the most prestigious awards for schoolboy athletes in NSW.

The Endeavour Sports High School graduate was presented with the Val Lembit Memorial Trophy for the Most Outstanding Male Representative at the NSW Combined High School Sports Awards at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Monday.

He joins a storied list of sporting champions like swimmer Ian Thorpe, cricketer Steve Waugh, golfer Nick Flanagan and NRL players such as Blake Green, Cameron King and current Kangaroos star Zac Lomax to have earned the accolade.

Williams also received a NSW CHS Blue, a time-honoured award recognising those who have represented their state with distinction in their chosen sport.

“It’s an honour to get it. I’m very grateful because there a lot of names there like Ian Thorpe and Zac Lomax who have won that award,” Williams said of receiving the Val Lembit Memorial Trophy.

“Hearing my name get called out was a very pleasant surprise.”

A goal-kicking outside back, Williams represented the Sharks in the SG Ball Cup (under 19s) this year before a handful of appearances in the Jersey Flegg Cup (under 21s).

Such is his talent, the teenager is training with the NRL squad over summer.

“It’s a dream come true, definitely, but it’s very hard,” he said.

“All the coaching staff set a standard and you’ve got to live up to that standard every day when you’re coming to training.

“It’s nerve-wracking at times, but I’m grateful I’ve been given the opportunity by the Cronulla Sharks and the coaching staff to be able to train with the big boys for the first time.”

Williams paid tribute to experienced Sharks junior rep coach Dave Howlett, who convinced him to abandon plans to drop out of Shire Christian School in Year 10 to start a trade apprenticeship and instead move to Endeavour Sports High under his tutelage.

Howlett was also Williams’ SG Ball coach this year.

“I was grateful to learn off Dave,” Williams, an Aquinas Colts junior, said.

“He knows a lot about footy and I take in whatever he talks about. I use it whether it’s on the field or off the field. I just take all the lessons he’s told me and I apply it to my everyday life.”

Howlett described Williams as “one of the most passionate students I’ve had anything to do with”.

“He absolutely loved the team, the Endeavour Rugby League Program and the school. He’s left a mark that will last well after he leaves,” he added.

“The thing that sets him apart from other boys is his will to win and the fact he’ll do whatever it takes on the field to help his team achieve.

“He’s tenacious and competitive.

I coached him at school and the Sharks, and he had exactly the same passion for both teams. He just loves being part of a team environment and trying to inspire other people.

“I’m really hopeful he’ll blossom into an NRL player and a great team member at that level too.

“We’re proud as a program and a school that we’ve played a role in his development as a person and player and we look forward to following his journey.”

Had he committed to the decision to leave school and become a tradie, Williams would’ve missed out on a raft of rugby league achievements. He represented the Australian Schoolboys in 2023 and made his mark at that level again this season.

Then got selected for the Aussie Schoolboys where we went to the Gold Coast to play France and played against Papua New Guinea over in Papua New Guinea,” he said.

The skilful outside back scored the match-tying try in a 22-all draw with PNG in October.

With hard work his focus, Williams will look to take the next step in 2025. Howlett believes the rigours of an NRL pre-season will prepare him perfectly for higher grades.

“Hopefully next year I can play more consistent Flegg and, if I’m able to, have a crack at (NSW) Cup,” Williams said.

Meanwhile, Engadine High School student Blake Wardrobe also earned a coveted NSW CHS Blue award for his touch football achievements.

Wardrobe, who has played junior reps for the Sharks alongside Williams, captained the 2024 NSWCHSSA open touch football team.

Applications open for Sharks Winter Academy

Applications are now open for players and staff interested in taking part in the 2024 Sharks Winter Academy program.

Sharks deliver the wins, aramex delivers the goods

A crucial part of the Sharks development system, the Winter Academy is open to those registered and playing for Cronulla-Sutherland District Junior League clubs. Squads will be assembled in the under 13s, 14s, 15s and 18s age groups.

Those selected will participate in a training block and games. Trials will be conducted at the Academy Fields at Cronulla High School.

The program follows the recent NSWRL Junior Representative season, in which the under-17 Sharks Harold Matthews boys reached the semi-finals, and is integral in continuing to identify and nurture local talent.

Applications close on Friday, May 24 – successful applicants will be contacted – ahead of Winter Academy training sessions commencing on Monday, June 10.

Triallists should be ready to train and bring suitable attire including boots and a mouthguard. If needed, strapping should be done before the session starts.

It’s advised to bring a completed waiver form – CLICK HERE – however they will also be available at the venue on the trial dates.

Staff roles include coaches, sports trainer, physiotherapist, equipment coordinator, strength and conditioning, team manager and ground announcer/timer.

Good signs for junior Sharks in final trials

There was plenty to like as the young Sharks laid a strong foundation for the season ahead in their third and final trials on Saturday.

The men’s Harold Matthews (under 17s) and SG Ball (19s) teams hosted the formidable Bulldogs at Sharks Academy. Although they both lost by two tries, the coaches were heartened by the performances a fortnight out from round one.

Meanwhile, the women’s Lisa Fiaola (17s) side took part in a three-way trial against the Central Coast Roosters and North Sydney Bears at Hills Grammar, Kenthurst, running out two-tries-to-one victors in both 30-minute hit-outs.

And the Tarsha Gale Cup (19s) squad maintained their unbeaten pre-season form with an impressive eight-tries-to-four win over the Bears.

Harold Matthews coach Brad Kelly took positives from what his team served up.

“It’s getting better each week in terms of the quality of the play, but again discipline was a factor in it,” Kelly said after the six-tries-to-four loss.

“A lot of penalties and six-agains which cruelled us, particularly in the first stanza of the game. But that’s what trials are for – to have another look at the boys, work on different combinations and different positional options.

“I was pleased with the effort, particularly in defence. The Bulldogs are big and powerful, so they threw a bit at us and I thought the boys did a really good job of handling them for most parts of the game.”

Likewise, SG Ball coach Dave Howlett saw merit in his squad’s narrow defeat.

“I thought the standard from both teams was pretty good,” Howlett said.

“It was a bit sloppier than I would’ve liked, but as far as the boys’ effort and cohesion, there was definitely some progress from last week to this week.”

The Lisa Fiaola and Tarsha Gale Sharks begin their campaigns against Wests Tigers at PointsBet Stadium on February 3, preceding an SG Ball clash with Balmain. The Harold Matthews boys also kick things off against Balmain at Concord Oval.

“It’s an important two weeks until round one … These two weeks are really important for the footy side of things, but also culturally and working on combinations and cohesion on and off the field,” Howlett added.

“It’s a very important two weeks to get right.”

Every Friday, we will work our way through a different player and what they can bring to the Dragons in 2024.

Hayden Buchanan

An Australian schoolboys representative, Buchanan has big wraps on him from many at the club. He is an incredibly strong ball carrier, powerful, elusive and one of the fittest in the Steelers junior ranks over the past few seasons.

Hayden won the Group 7 premiership with the Gerringong Lions in 2023, and was a huge part of their success. Has the ability to play at both centre and second row, his future is seen in the back row.

A few words from his Gerringong coach, Nathan Ford:

“Hayden is known not just for his exceptional playing skills but also for his unwavering commitment to upholding the values of respect, responsibility, and excellence.

As a player at Kiama High School, he has become a role model for his peers, setting a standard of sportsmanship and character that is truly exemplary.

His interactions with teammates, opponents, and officials showcase a deep-seated reverence for the sport.

Probably won’t play first grade in 2023, however is expected to feature in the lower grades, in both Jersey Flegg and the NSW Cup, and will start the season for the Illawarra Steelers in the SG Ball competition.

After giving up two tries in the opening five minutes of the match the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership Sharks have slipped to a 22-10 defeat to North Sydney in their round two clash.

The two four-pointers, both scored by Bears winger Jakiya Whitfield helped the home team to establish an early advantage and as hard as the Sharks tried in the hot and steamy conditions, they were never able to bridge the gap.

While disappointed with the start to the game, coach Ruan Sims remained positive and was complimentary of the effort of her team despite the loss.

“We can’t let teams get off to a start like that,” Sims said. “It was a tough game, hard conditions for both sides.

“We just missed the jump, missed the start, the girls did really well to get themselves back into position but in the end those two early tries were the difference.

I was really proud of the girls to be able to pull it back and we know what it is we can work on before next week.”

Following the two four-pointers, in the first and fourth minutes of the match, the Sharks backs were to the wall in a game where temperatures reached the high 30’s at the Hills Grammar School fields at Kenthurst.

The Sharks responded, centre Ella Barker making it 8-4 to the Bears following an 11th minute try, before the North Sydney side was able to cross the line twice before the break in taking an 18-4 lead to half time.

Backrower Tayla Curtis scored, the try converted by Maddie Studdon gave the Sharks some hope of a comeback victory at 18-10 with still plenty of time left on the clock.

The Bears would confirm the win with a final touchdown just two minutes from fulltime.

“They have a big strong middle pack, it’s a representative pack and we knew that’s where their strength was going to be, they just rolled us to start the game,” Sims said in summing up.

Following a week one win over the Tigers the Sharks now have a win and a loss heading into round three where they play the Roosters at PointsBet Stadium in what will be their first home game of the season.

In complementing the young local talent in their pathways and junior representative programs, the Sharks recruit players from interstate, regional areas or from overseas.

Being thrust into city life in Sydney and the Sutherland Shire can be a daunting proposition for some, with the change in surrounds and lifestyle often a challenge as they look to chase their NRL dreams.

However, to make the transition smoother, the Sharks use the generosity of local Homestay Families to assist in the process by hosting the young players in their homes.

So able to concentrate their efforts on their training and playing commitments, these families support and provide a stable family environment for the players concerned.

With Ronaldo Mulitalo, Will Kennedy and Braydon Trindall a few examples from the current NRL squad to have benefitted from living with local area Homestay families when first brought into the Sharks system.

The Sharks Welfare and Education team of Jeff Robson and Morgan Te Oka coordinate and assist in placing the young players with suitable Homestay families.

However, with talented youngsters coming into the club each year, the Sharks are always looking for more Homestay families interested in being a part of the program.

Robson a former Sharks, Manly, Eels and Warriors halfback, has been involved with the Sharks Welfare program for the past few seasons and knows how important the right family environment can be to a out of town youngster.

“These young players benefit from a having the support a Homestay Family can provide in addition to what we might be able to offer from a club perspective, in helping them to be the best they can both on and off the field,” Robson said.

The Homestay family would support the player while they are attending school, pursuing an apprenticeship/traineeship or working fulltime, in addition to fulfilling their training and playing commitments with the Sharks.

As for Te Oka, new to the Sharks in 2022, someone with academic qualifications which include a Bachelor of Education (secondary)

As well as certificates in Elite Athlete Wellbeing, Training and Assessment and in Fitness, she has arrived at the Cronulla club with extensive experience in assisting young athletes, both male and female.

Along with Robson, Te Oka will assist the Homestay family to set up and provide suitable living arrangements for the young recruits.

“Between Jeff and myself, we will also be there to provide support to the Homestay families as much as we look after the needs of the young players,” she added.

Typically, the players are aged between 16 and 19 and on most occasions would live with the Homestay Family for between one to two years, depending on the individual circumstances.

Families are compensated for food and expenses.

Return of Lisa Fiaola Cup key to strengthening women’s pathways

Creating the link between U17s and U19s girls wanting to continue to play Rugby League was further strengthened this week at the Lisa Fiaola Cup gala day at Tuggerah’s Central Coast Regional Sporting Complex.

Harvey Norman NSW Sky Blues head coach Kylie Hilder, who is also the NSWRL’s Female Pathways Manager, was on hand to see what the talent pool looks like this year.

There were 15 sides playing on Tuesday 27 September under the watchful eye of Hilder with several Sky Blues players helping in a coaching consultant role

“We don’t have winners coming out of the day. It was more about girls turning up and having a game of footy,” Hilder said.

“We’re trying to create that next step in the pathway. We need to fill that void in that younger age group before Tarsha Gale.”

The Harvey Norman Tasha Gale Cup for U19s has been part of the NSWRL calendar since 2018. Twelve clubs took part in the 2022 season with the Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy beating the Newcastle Knights 12-10 in the grand final.

Hilder said it was her hope that an U17s competition could be set up running in tandem with the U19s.

“We need to accommodate these younger girls and watching them today I can tell you there’s some extremely good talent,” she said.

It was the first Lisa Fiaola Cup gala day in three years – the previous two being cancelled due to COVID-19.

“There were only about five teams back then,” Hilder said. “But the standard and level here is extremely impressive. Looking at some of these girls it looks like they’ve been playing for five years already.”

Another plan on the horizon is starting a Sky Blues Academy, where players from the Lisa Fiaola would be identified and invited to train there.

This week games consisted of 10-minute halves and teams were spread across three pools. Each team played four matches with a total of 360 females taking part in the event.

Teams came from Parramatta Eels, Central Coast Roosters, Victoria Storm, Newcastle Knights, Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, Wests Tigers, Illawarra Steelers, Penrith Panthers, South Sydney Rabbitohs, Northern Tigers, Northern Rivers Titans, St George Dragons, North Coast Bulldogs, Western Rams, and Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks.
