Tackle, competitive ban backflip: Major changes coming into Souths Juniors competition from 2024

Tackle and competitive bans for some junior age groups are set to be implemented across the Souths Juniors competition in 2024. Here’s why the league has backflipped on its stance from this year.

A year after defying sweeping changes proposed by the NSWRL, the Souths Juniors competition is set to fall into line from 2024 onwards.

In an email communicated to clubs, South Sydney District Junior Rugby Football League CEO Luke Curry confirmed the age of tackling and competitive fixtures would be raised.

“Ages 5-8 will be non-competitive. Under 5s and 6s will play tag for the whole season,” the statement read.

This shapes as a major change from 2023 where tackling was allowed in the U5 and U6 divisions, with competitive divisions played in all age groups except for the U5s.

A number of major reasons were presented for the changes, including excessive transfers at the start of the season impacting competition integrity and poor conduct from players and spectators.

That poor conduct came to a head on A-grade grand final day as wild brawls took place both inside and outside Redfern Oval.

The vision from the league is this leads to a new audience of players and parents, and that this will aid in the transition of players from mini to mod to international football, keeping them in the game for longer.

The statement said the changes would be trialled during the year and reviewed at the conclusion.

Current ideal NSWRL guidelines have the 2024 season as non-competitive up to and including the U10s.

Ahead of last season, South Sydney joined the likes of Manly and Macarthur in defying the changes that were proposed for the start of the 2023 season.

Last November Curry said the decision to opt against the NSWRL proposal was backed by clubs.

“We’ve sent our position to NSWRL and we declined to go into the tag component and non-competitive element (of the changes),” he said.

“We want to keep doing what we do. Sticking to what we’ve always done is our position at the moment.

“It was supported by the clubs. We wouldn’t go in the direction we were if clubs weren’t on board.”

The proposed changes also drew the ire of former The Biggest Loser trainer Shannan Ponton, who believed teaching the right tackle technique at a young age was crucial to helping young children grow confidence in their abilities.

Harmony 9s in cultural celebration

Harmony 9s to showcase 27 heritage groups in cultural celebration

The NSWRL will celebrate the growing diversity and inclusiveness of the game when it brings together 27 heritage groups, 80 teams and 1200 players for the annual Harmony 9s tournament at Albion Park this weekend.

The two-day event at Croom Regional Sporting Complex will showcase 134 games across two days including Under 16s and Under 18s boys and girls, Open Age Men and Women, Emerging Nation Open Men, Mixed League Tag, and a Physical Disability Exhibition Match.

The heritage teams are allocated into two pools and play nine-a-side matches and 16-minute halves, with the top-seeded teams at the end of the pool games progressing to the finals.

“The Harmony 9s tournament is one of the highlights on the Community Rugby League calendar as it provides an opportunity for heritage groups to celebrate their culture while enjoying a game of Rugby League,” NSW Community Rugby League Manager Peter Clarke said.

“Some of the heritage groups involved have already begun their Rugby League journey, while others including Ukraine and Syria, are beginning for the first time this weekend.

“The cultural exchanges are a real highlight of the event and I invite all Rugby League fans to come down to see them.

“I also extend a warm welcome to all heritage groups, participants and volunteers taking part and look forward to the action over the next two days with all games to be played in the right spirit.”

The heritage groups involved this weekend include Africa United Lions, Cambodia, Chile, Fiji-Australia, Italy, Ireland Australia, Latin Heat, Lebanon, Macedonia, Malta.

Mediterranean Rugby League, NSW First Nations Indigenous, NSW Maori, NSW Niue, NSW Tonga, Ozzy Cooks, Pasifika, Philippines, Poland-Australia, NSW Samoa, Sudanese Buffaloes, Syria, Thailand Naga, Turkey, Ukraine and Vietnam.

Harmony 9s began in 2009 with the aim of increasing Rugby League participation in multicultural communities across the state, as well as encouraging stronger understanding and harmony through Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) groups.

The tournament was temporarily suspended from 2019-2021, largely because of the disruptions caused to community sport by the COVID pandemic, but returned to the NSWRL calendar last year.

Rugby League registrations open for 2023 season

Westpac NSW Blues coach Brad Fittler and Harvey Norman NSW Sky Blues coach Kylie Hilder have urged everyone to sign up with their local Rugby League club and enjoy being part of the greatest game of all.

Registrations for the 2023 season open today (1 December).

“I can honestly say from many years of being involved at different levels of the game that Rugby League offers you so much,” Fittler said.

“I encourage everyone to become part of the Rugby League community and find the competition and the club that best suits you.”

It’s hoped the 2023 season will again have registrations topping the 100,000 mark for the fourth year in a row.

In 2022 almost 106,000 people registered to play Rugby League, including a record 23,109 female participants, building on the success of 2021 where female numbers surpassed 20,000 for the first time.

“It makes you wonder how far we can grow the female game; that gets me really excited,” said Hilder, who is also NSWRL Female Pathways Manager.

“We invest in young lives and being involved with a Rugby League club, their coaches, teammates and volunteers, will become a positive experience in so many ways.

“I can’t urge everyone enough – male and female – to register for an experience they will always remember.”

The NSWRL offers a number of competitions to achieve inclusivity for all players – from the traditional form of tackle, to non-tackle options in Blues Tag, and Try League for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) communities.

There is also well-established Wheelchair and Physical Disability Rugby League competitions.

NSWRL’s Community Football Manager Peter Clarke said the continued success of the game comes from providing positive experience for everyone involved to attract and retain more families.

“At our Community Rugby League Conference in November we heard more about stories of success from community volunteers across metro and regional NSW grassroots Rugby League,” Clarke said.

“Each volunteer and their club or association had unique ways of working, but the common factor in their success was that they are thriving on a promoting positive and inclusive culture, fostering a family environment, and encouraging strong connection from juniors to seniors.”

In 2023 the NSWRL continues the implementation of the National Player Development Framework, which includes a suite of initiatives aimed at attracting and retaining more families to the game.

Minto Cobras awarded #RESPECT Club of the Year

Minto Cobras JRLFC have been crowned the 2022 #RESPECT Club of the Year after successfully promoting the NSWRL initiative which encourages positive game day behaviour toward referees.

The Cobras will receive a prize to the value of $2000 thanks to the support of McDonald’s, with 250 clubs across the state taking the pledge this season.

“The club has a new committee this year and they are working really hard to ensure they run a good club,” NSW Community Rugby League Manager Peter Clarke said.

“I am pleased to see that their efforts throughout this weekend have lead to them receiving this award.

“A positive game day environment is important in attracting new players and referees to our game and it has been a great initiative with Clubs across the state all getting involved and spreading the message.”

#RESPECT Round, which was held in May, focuses on game day behaviour toward referees and serves as a reminder for more than 100,000 players, spectators and officials involved in Community Rugby League to promote a positive environment.

Community Rugby League team captains and referees enter the field of play together and give a thumbs up as they line up for a photo before the game, as well as sharing messages using the #RESPECT hashtag on social media.

#RESPECT Round also featured during the Country v City representative weekend with all 16 team captains and referees giving a thumbs up before kick-off across the three venues.

The #RESPECT campaign started in 2016 with 16,000 pledges being made online by participants across the game in line with the NSWRL’s vision to eliminate poor behaviour and promote a positive environment for all players, coaches, referees, volunteers, and families
