SEQ’s premier schoolboy rugby league’s competition’s Team of the Season

After months of excitement, we’ve named our Langer Trophy team of the season, along with awards like the Try of the Year, Discovery Players, Best New Faces and players we can’t wait to see in 2024.

Check out our Langer Trophy Team of the Season below.

Here it is, our annual Langer Trophy Team of the Season and associated award winners.

We named a 20 player squad, but there is much, much more to our story.

WALTERS CUP TEAM OF THE SEASON

Who scored the try of the season? Who were the Best New Faces, the Hard Yakka Award winners, and the Comeback Kings of 2023? All revealed here, along with players we Can’t Wait to Watch in 2024. Plus much more.

So sit back and relaxed as we take through the players who most caught our eye during a fabulous Langer Trophy season.

TEAM OF THE SEASON

1. Saxon Innes (Marsden SHS)

Speed was Innes’ point of difference. He was invisible last season in this competition as a winger, but his switch to No. 1 this season was a revelation.

2. Anton Naiyep (Ipswich)

Naiyep didn’t score as many tries as he did in 2022 but boy was he good.

He began the year flexing his muscles in the Meninga Cup competition and continued to show why he was a Queensland Schoolboys select throughout the Langer season.

He is so strong and never loses the ball.

3. Keisaia Sua (Ipswich SHS)

Raiders signed Su’a was impressive in his first and only season of Langer Trophy footy.

Coming across from New Zealand, Su’a quickly fit into the Ipswich outfit and combined well with Naiyep on his outside.

He knew when to pass, when to cut back in, when to pin the ears back and when to get involved.

4 Sam Stephenson (PBC SHS)

The tall, powerful, long striding Queensland schoolboys centre has given PBC SHS an ex-factor player both in the air and when the ball is moved through the hands. To think he is only in Year 11.

5. Will Semu (Marsden SHS)

Semu was fantastic and throughly deserved his place in the Queensland schoolboys. A junior league prodigy, he suffered a serious head knock in 2021 which stifled his 2022 season, but he was back to his best this season and his selection in our Team of the Season was one of the most pleasing of all.

6. Bailey McConnell (PBC SHS)

The Justin Hodges Medallist, McConell started the season as PBC SHS’s No. 1 game manager in the absence of injured skipper Zane Harrison, then when Harrison returned he took his game to another level. His consistency across the season ensured he was constantly in the 3-2-1 votes.

7. Zane Harrison (PBC SHS)

Harisson missed the first three games of the season but hoisted his team’s mainsail after the after the school holidays and sailed his team to Langer Trophy and Phil Hall Cup premierships. The best game manager in the competition.

8. Alex Leapai (Mabel Park SHS)

The No. 1 prop in the competition, Leapai was Mabel Park’s front row battleship, their spiritual leader. The Gold Coast Titans have a good one here.

9. Will Saunders (PBC SHS)

Saunders glorious dummy half play has been a highlight over the last two months. He can play within himself, then take the game on when opposition A and B defenders start to wane.

10. Lewis Symonds (Marsden SHS)

Symonds was an unlucky omission from the Queensland schoolboys squad and enjoyed his best season in Langer playing at No. 13.

There were times, like at Kayo Stadium against Redcliffe, where he was unstoppable.

11. Zac Garton (Caloundra SHS)

Garton grabbed his teammates by the arm and showed them they had nothing to fear during Caloundra SHS’s debut season in the competition. It was a demanding season for the newcomers, but Queensland edge forward Garton was always setting the highest of standards.

12. Jett Bryce (Keebra Park SHS)

Bryce was absolutely sensational, the best forward in the competition. His performance in a losing semi-final performance against PBC SHS was remarkable.

13. John Fineanganofo (Redcliffe SHS)

Redcliffe SHS’s Australian schoolboys representative played injured from round 4, but still makes our squad with ease. Clever ballplayer who could also play tough in the middle or run on the fringe of the ruck.

14. Coby Black (Marsden SHS)

Black started the season as the player his No. 7 peers most looked after and most of the season displayed those class touches.

He will be disappointed with his semi-final performance but you learn more from falling over, then getting up again, than you do sailing through life on a white fluffy cloud.

15. Oliva Iaulualo (Ipswich SHS)

Iaulualo is a mobile edge forward who did his thing all season.

He is a very good player and the Bulldogs have two promising forwards in him and David Leota.

16. Baylen Donald (PBC SHS)

Donald’s left edge running threat and defence simply could not be ignored.

For several years he did his apprenticeship playing Walters Cup and Langer Reserves, Tweed Connell Challenge and then Meninga Cup. All that education ensured he was the finished product for PBC SHS’s remarkable run through the finals.

17. Brady Turner (PBC SHS)

The big bloke edged out his teammate Jett Jackson for this reserve prop position. His physical presence was a boon for PBC SHS.

18. Tyler Peckham-Harris (Ipswich SHS)

Tyler Peckham-Harris definitely deserves to be in the starting team but we couldn’t find a spot.

He is without a doubt one of the best defenders in the competition and he is also an elite attacking weapon.

Despite being small, the Peckham-Harris mindset is enough to see him play at the highest level.

19. Ray Puru (PBC SHS)

The fast finishing Puru played his way onto the bench after a succession of high class finals matches coming off the bench after returning from injury.

20. Lauloto Salei (Wavell SHS)

He was in our Team of the Season until Pay Puru’s dramatic finals form, so to keep him in we extended the reserves bench by one just to accommodate him. That’s how highly we think of the Wavell SHS captain.

21. Aholoka Toia (Redcliffe SHS)

He is last but not least. Toia was always going to make our top squad. He played for the Queensland schoolboys where he was one of Queensland’s top three players and was whole-hearted the whole season.

We almost feel like apologising to him for not finding a place in the squad, so good has he been.

The most unlucky omission

Lachlan Buchbach (Mabel Park SHS)

He put his finger prints on the competition early when he tore PBC SHS and was outstanding during Mabel Park SHS fabulous season which saw them finish No. 2 after the home-and-away season had finished.

Players we’d love to have found a place for

Zac Herdegen (Wavell SHS)

Herdegen was as good as any half in the competition but ultimately we went for the Queensland schoolboy No. 7, Black, and the Langer Trophy premiership winning captain, Harrison. But we can’t wait to see the Year 11 student again next season.

Jett Jackson (PBC SHS)

We just loved Jackson’s work ethic. What he does on the field says everything about PBC SHS’s DNA.

Elijah Tagiilima (Mabel Park SHS)

His combination with Francis-Kingston and those thumping runs from his own end were eye-catching. We’d love to have found a place for this Southport Tigers’ junior in the top team.

The same can be said about rampaging centre Lehi Thomas and classy fullback Ryan McCann.

Chase Paterson (Calundra SHS)

The high energy, talented Paterson could play both middle or edge with ease.

He was one of the most exciting forward talents in the competition.

Hayden Potts (Redcliffe SHS)

The Redcliffe skipper played the most minutes out of anyone in his team, was a terrific leader and could really do it all.

He was one of the competition’s best players before the school holidays and coming back he was still at the top of his game.

Discovery player

Brad Higgins (Caloundra)

What a hidden gem this Caloundra SHS prop has been. The tall, raw-boned Higgins ruffled plenty of feathers and was intimidated by no one.

Jackson Howe (Mabel Park SHS)

Howe was Buchbach’s partner in crime and they were a formidable pairing.

Howe has a tough of class, is a goalkicking whiz and can both create and score tries with his kicking.

The Mr Versatile award winners

Jealym Hohaia (Caloundra SHS)

He played in nearly every position this year and was outstanding in all games.

Tyler Peckham-Harris (Ipswich SHS)

He made our Team of the Season and he can play anywhere. Fullback, hooker and in the forwards even.

He tackles like he is seven foot.

Ellyjah Birve (Caloundra SHS)

Versatile because more than once he would play a full game of Walters Cup, catch his breath while the Langer reserves play and then play a full game of Langer Trophy.

Jai Camilleri (Wavell SHS)

He could player hooker if needed but also in the halves because Harrison Hill is a terrific player.

A ripping gridiron talent, Camilleri used his strength to bust through contact.

Rookie of the Year

Kobi Floro (Wavell SHS)

Floro in the yellow boots.

The big bloke was lean, mean and fit, steaming off the bench then impacting games with tries.

We are looking forward to seeing him in 2024.

Comeback of the Season

Javon Andrews (Marsden SHS)

Five-eight Andrews overcame a serious neck injury to not only compete, but he one of the competition’s ace players.

Special mention to his teammate Will Semu as mentioned earlier in the story, and PBC SHS’s Pay Puru, also mentioned earlier.

Marsden’s Elijah Leatigaga also had a serious hip injury in 2021 and should be acknowledged.

But no one beats Andrews’ to his award. We will feature his comeback story later this month. Watch this space.

Best new faces

Kylem Vunipola (Marsden SHS)

Vunipola’s would have learned so much playing in this high class school competition as a centre when his preferred position was fullback. We are looking forward to seeing him again in the Meninga Cup.

Keyarn Pene (Wavell SHS)

Not the flashy try scoring centre, but was an elite defensive centre who led the way in effort areas. He’ll be back next year for sure.

David Leota (Ipswich SHS)

Leota was a middle forward powerhouse from start to finish for Ipswich SHS. The Bulldogs have signed a good one here.

Aleki Schuster (Redcliffe SHS)
Schuster carried the ball well during the season and got better every game. He will be even better next year.

Jaycob Kingston-Francis (Mabel park SHS)

Although he played one Langer game in 2022, the centre was so good in 2023 we just had to give him a special shout out.

Shaye Faa’aoga (Ipswich SHS)

The likes of Brandon Tikinau, Izaiah Mafi, Xavier Kirk and LJ Nonu all deserve wraps for their efforts this season after winning the Langer Reserves premiership last year.

But Faa’aoga was a brand new face, at least to us.

He played in almost every game and was reliable. He is strong, has power through the hips and was the perfect second rower.

MOST UNDERRATED PERFORMANCE IN THE FINALS

LJ Nonu (Ipswich SHS)

Nonu had a daunting task opposing inform PBC SHS strike weapon Sam Stephenson in the semi-final. Stephenson got away from him once early on, but after that Nonu bottled him up and late in the game made a run that almost won the game for Ipswich SHS.

The Harrisons (PBC)

Zane Harrison was outstanding as halfback and captain, but his twin brother Isaac was unsung as a hard working No.13.

BEST INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE

It was Leapai versus the Marsden SHS pack when the Logan local derby unfolded. Leapai was at times taking two rucks a set before he knocked himself out with a big hit..

Jett Bryce against PBC SHS.

Did we see a better performance this season than that produced by Bryce against PBC SHS in the semi-final? No. It was sensational.

Langer Trophy semi-finals live stream: Marsden SHS v Palm Beach Currumbin, Ipswich v Wavell

Get ready for another chapter in the battle between two of Queensland’s best performing rugby league schools after their masterful semi-final performances.

Ipswich State High School will face Palm Beach Currumbin SHS in the Langer Trophy grand final after a clinical 18-6 victory over a fierce Wavell SHS on Tuesday at Kougari Oval.

The Langer trophy final will be a rematch of last year’s clash which Ipswich only just won 16-12.

The reigning champs solidified their spot in the big dance with 16 minutes left when Sam Martin scooped the ball from the back of the scrum and found Tyler Peckham-Harris.

Peckham-Harris, who has played various positions this season, drew his man and found Xavier Kirk who strolled in.

This try, straight out of coach Josh Bretherton’s handbook, gave Ipswich a decisive advantage.

Jack Laing and Sam Martin helped Ipswich into another decider.

Ipswich fly half Izaiah Mafi had his radar on kicking three-from-three at goal, while unsung forward Cayleb Johnson was a tremendous defender.

Johnson had made countless crucial tackles just before Ipswich scored their second try by Alton Naiyep, the headgeared prop denying Wavell from close range with gutsy scramble defence.

Wavell were always in it, but looked most capable of an upset when tied 6-all shortly after half time. Ipswich were clinical when scoring two tries in the time Kobi Floro (Wavell forward) was in the sin bin for back chat.

When Floro returned to the field, he had a highlight reel run when he bumped off a game Ipswich defender.

It was a great battle in the first half with Maaro David scoring for Ipswich and centre Keyarn Pene scoring a beauty for Wavell when he chased a deft grubber kick by Zac Herdegan.

Speaking of Herdegan, the year 11 halfback was impressive with his general play kicking – which threatened Ipswich‘s edge defence with cross-field kicks.

It was apparent Wavell were really starting to find their feet. Hookers Jai Camilleri and Harrison Hill were a strong combination confronting opposites Tyler Peckham-Harris and Sam Martin.

Acting as a playmaker for Wavell was Queensland Schoolboy Lauloto Salei, who made a handful of line breaks in a sizzling showing from the versatile second rower.

Ipswich centres LJ Nonu and Keisaia Su‘a were powerful, with Nonu’s acceleration and Sua’s fend providing their wingers Anton Naiyep and Xavier Kirk half-chances.

PBC DEFENSIVE PRESSURE PROVES DIFFERENCE

Palm Beach Currumbin SHS today encircled Marsden SHS, suffocated them and then struck fatal blows to win a place in the Langer Trophy grand final next week.

PBC SHS won 16-4, writing another chapter into the school‘s proud tradition of making grand finals.

They claimed victory by playing the long game, executing simple football, using their speed around the rucks and kicking to the corners in attack.

PBC led 4-0 after breaking a 27-minute deadlock, then took advantage of two Marsden SHS fumbles in the second half – one an in goal blunder, the other a bombed try – to twice score.

And that was the match.

Marsden SHS were dangerous challengers, but couldn’t cross the line.

With his forwards building a formidable shield, PBC SHS halfback Zane Harrison steered his team around, while dummy half Will Saunders and Ray Puru creeping around the ruck was dangerous.

Centre Sam Stephenson’s aerial and running threat was also a handful.

But PBC SHS’s defence was their best attack.

Marsden SHS had the skill and the desire – they just lacked that finals precision.

It was a battle worthy of a final, with both teams sparring at each other throughout the first half, refusing to drop their guard or blink.

Marsden SHS looked marginally more likely, but the two looming chances – one at the start and the other near halftime – were stifled by lost possession.

Tyson Ploegsma, Ray Puru and Brady Turner helped inspire PBC’s impressive win

In the end it was Palm Beach Currumbin SHS which nosed in front, 4-0, three minutes before halftime courtesy of edge forward Baylen Donald’s burst onto a Bailey McConnell pass.

The move led to centre Sam Stephenson being given the try by Donald.

Brotherly love between the Taewa siblings will be cast aside when the boys confront each other in the first game.

Jaylen said, after playing juniors together for the Bilambil Jets, and alongside each other for the PBC SHS Walters Cup and Langer reserve teams, they did oppose each other for one season when Jury played for Nerang Roosters.

Brothers Jury and Jaylen Taewa will oppose each other.

And earlier in this Langer season they were on opposing sides, but Jury was on the opposite side of the field to his brother and they did not really come together.

“I have not played against him properly. It will be a bit odd,’’ Jaylen said.

Jury added: “He deserves the spot he’s in and it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to play against my twin in a semi-final.

“He’s a hard worker. It will be good going up against another prop with the same skillset and mindset as me. I am keen to see what little tricks he’s got.’’

Jaylen said it would be a tough night for their mum, Renee and father Jury senior, because they won’t know who to cheer for.

The Marsden SHS halves pair have been in great form this season, Black having taken his game up a level from 2022 and Andrews having made a successful return from a serious neck injury.

Maccan said: “Leading up to last week I hadn’t watched much of Marsden since we played them in the first round. But I know Javon and Coby are the ones steering the ship.

“When they are playing well, when they are on fire, their team goes really well.’’

Will Saunders and Baylen Donald

Hartigan had tremendous respect for old foes PBC SHS and could name multiple players, but he has really admired the work of hooker Will Saunders:

Saunders ability to play off a quick player the ball, advance on the defence himself or engage defenders before passing has caught the eye of Hartigan.

The name Saunders is very well known on the Gold Coast and across the border town, Tweed Heads, where Don played for both the Gold Coast Seagulls.

Hartigan also has big wraps on flame-haired edge back rower Baylen Donald who has been a force all year long in both the Tweed Seagulls Meninga Cup and PBC Langer Trophy teams.

Ipswich SHS captain Oliva Iaulualo will return from a week’s lay off and reunite with his childhood mate David Leota in the middle of the field for the defending champions.

Wavell SHS coach Paul Stanley will have his side ready for their impact.

“They have a very strong pack, but Oliva Iaulualo and David Leota are very powerful. And they have Naiyep out wide as well. He is a dangerous player.’’

Joshua Bretherton (Ipswich SHS)

Loto Salei and Zac Herdegen

Wavell SHS’s captain Loto Salei has been elite all season long playing a Pat Carrigan type of role for the Broncos.

He is a great link between the backs and forwards and can both run hard and create chances – as can halfback Herdegen.

Bretherton said Loto Salei was very damaging while Herdegen controls a lot of things and kicks really well.

“If we don’t do a good job of controlling him (Herdegen) he will kick us to death.”

Cory Pearse said: “I have loved all the community things that Marsden has done. Not just in their sport, but academically for the students and their parents. It is like one big family.

“We have thousands of kids at school and we are all there for one and other.

Manager Thomas Taunagita started in his role as manager last year after damaging his ACL playing. “I thought it was the end of my rugby league journey,’’ he said.

“I was devastated but my teachers gave me a chance to be a manager. In year 10 I was the Titans Cup manager and that followed on through to Mr Hartigan asking me to be the Langer manager.

“I have loved being involved in the rugby league program.’’

Jai Camilleri said: “I came to Wavell in Year 8 and I was impressed with the culture, not only in the footy program, but how we enjoy our footy, school work. That is reflected in what we do on and off the field.

“This year did not start well, but the way we stuck to our program, focused on what Mr Stanley told us, we knew what we had to do to improve. There is a bond.’’

Zane Harrison said: “I started in Year 7 and the school has always accepted the footy program. You see teachers at the game supporting us.

Coach Joshua Bretherton said Laing had been at Ipswich SHS since the very start from Year 7.

“He’s got brothers and sisters at the school, he played his club football four minutes over the hill from school at the closest club, he went to primary school across the road.

“He’s born and bred within 300 metres of the school sort of thing and after helping us win the national title last year he has done a great job again this year.

“He’s worked hard and grown into a really high level footballer which is awesome.”

Another star of last year’s national championship team was winger Anton Naiyep who is originally from Papua New Gunea, and came to Ipswich via Cairns.

“He’s lived in Ipswich since he was 10 and has been with us the whole way through… He played his local football within a stones throw from the school (Norths Tigers) and is a local kid.”

Brisbane Broncos had their hands all over this one as Marsden issued a warning to their Langer Trophy rivals by putting last year’s national champions to the sword. Relive all the action.

The future of the Brisbane Broncos was glimpsed at the North Ipswich Reserve when contracted halfback Coby Black and winger Saxon Innes combined for the try of the season in Marsden State High School’s 30-12 victory over Ipswich State High.

Innes retrieved a kick 15 metres out from his own line, returned it to centre field before a deadly sidestep saw him plunge through two defenders and scorch away down the midfield.

On his hip in support was Wynnum-Manly Seagulls club teammate Black, who finished the try which moved Marsden ahead 20-6 just shy of the halftime break.

Innes is a light stepper and possesses freakish speed – and that’s why he is one of the Langer Trophy’s best finishers.

Earlier, Ipswich hit the scoreboard first through centre LJ Nonu after an Izzy Mafi bomb bounced into his grasp. They led 6-0, but quickly Marsden found their groove once Queensland Schoolboys centre Will Semu dotted one down.

Black then slotted a penalty goal, and made a tremendous trysaving cover tackle on prolific Ipswich winger Alton Naiyep, who was brought down a metre shy of the line.

Marsden turned this pressure situation into a score and a subsequent eight-point-buffer when a trademark Lewis Symonds offload put Patrick Kailahi in under the posts.

Marsden led 20-6 at the break after that spectacular try to end the first, and then 24-6 when Symonds scored a try of his own eight minutes into the second half.

This time it was a hard run from centre Kylem Vunipola, and an inside step from the explosive Xavier Atoa, which undid the Ipswich defence.

A try was just what the doctor ordered for the home side and it was darting dummy-half Lesayne Tuiasau who was the man for the job.

It was a four-pointer which swung momentum back in Ipswich’s favour, but they would rue not making the most of their opportunities when they had possession close to Marsden’s line.

Atoa then put the nail in the coffin at 30-12 when he planted a deft grubber kick impressively engineered in field by Semu, who was in full stride down the left touchline.

Trusty Ipswich forwards Oliva Iaulualo, Kane Self and David Leota were tireless, while Tyler Peckham-Harris added a punch out of hooker in a loss which will serve as motivation heading into the quarter finals on August 9.

WALTERS CUP

Marsden oozed class in their dominant 32-0 victory over Stretton College.

The Makos ran in six tries, and left two out there when their final two tries were disallowed.

They were in fine form, with quick ball out of dummy half from Tayshaarn Tonga, and deadly finishing from winger Quinn Timperon delivering the win at the North Ipswich Reserve.

Line breaks came hard and fast, and once they scored their first, it looked a done deal for the well-oiled Logan side, which was certainly boosted by a quick-thinking fullback in Caleb Cresswell.

Cresswell scored the try of the day with a chip and chase that left the Stretton defenders stunned.

Stretton were game, but Marsden had a ton of possession and a strong connection between their offloading forwards and their impressive backs.

Centre Antonio Okusitino, five-eighth Jack Hepi Simon, Timperon (two tries), Cresswell and interchange forward Frontier Wiperi were try scorers for Marsden.

Ipswich SHS are riding a five-game winning streak, Marsden SHS have been the pacesetters for much of the year – something has to give in Wednesday’s marquee Langer Trophy match-up.

This will be the last match of the regular season before all eight teams assemble on August 9 at Bishop Park (Norths) in a playoff between teams one through eight.

The eighth ranked school will be replaced at position #6 by the winner of the Gee Cup v Titans Cup match on Tuesday. See that preview here.

If all goes well for these two teams, they may be meeting again on August 23 at Langlands Park, this time for much, much bigger stakes – the Grand Final.

The two schools will clash at 5pm after Stretton State College and Marsden SHS go head-to-head in the final game of the Walters Cup home and away season.

Two of the competition’s strongest centres will be on a collision course at North Ipswich Reserve.

Queensland Schoolboys representative, and arguably one of the most improved players all season, Semu is an awfully strong and quick centre.

Not unlike Semu, Nonu has a good turn of speed and powerful leg drive.

Innes is the speed machine who will be hard to stop if he gets in space. Watch for Coby Black to put him through a hole.

Naiyep on the other hand is also very quick, but a brutal ballrunner who will help Ipswich get onto the front foot when coming out of their half.

Broncos-signed Symonds is an interesting player, a ball-playing lock who can threaten with his own runs, or link the forwards with the backs.

He could have easily been a Queensland Schoolboys representative.

His opposite number is Newcastle-contracted Kane Self, who is a very good player also.

Self is a toiler, a workhorse whose defence and carries from in close will break down the Marsden defences.

There’s a good chance Jack Laing starts at lock, with Self an almighty bench-boost.

Langer Trophy local derby: Mabel Park SHS v Marsden SHS

The Langer Trophy clash between Mabel Park and Marsden was abandoned late in the first half on Wednesday following a gigantic collision between two props. Both boys have since been medically cleared.

The Langer Trophy Logan derby between Marsden SHS and Mabel Park SHS was abandoned on Wednesday night after a gigantic collision between front rowers Alex Leapai and Jury Taewa halted play after about 25 minutes.

Leapai, the Mabel Park captain, and Marsden’s Taewa were both taken to hospital as a precaution after Leapai produced a huge tackle on Taewa, who was running the ball back from a restart.

But after a period of observation in hospital, both boys have been medically cleared.

Leapai, who received a head knock, was in good spirits last night, smiling to his teammates as he was stretchered into an ambulance while Taewa was conveyed to hospital for observation.

Alex Leapai’s father, Alex senior, praised Level II sports trainer Adrian Armstrong, who was employed at home games by Marsden, for his care of his son after initial concerns for his health.

Armstrong sprinted on and stayed with Leapai until the arrival of two ambulances.

Both teams gave the players a rousing reception as they were taken away. Marsden were leading 14-10 at the time.

WALTERS CUP

A first half blinder from Marsden SHS left centre Antonio Okusitino helped played his side into a winning position against a gallant Mabel Park SHS in a vital Walters Cup showdown on Wednesday

Marsden SHS won 24-4, but Mabel plugged a leaky boat to stay with their rivals for all of the second half after Marsden at one stage led 20-0.

Outside a go-forward pack, and feasting on front football, Marsden SHS centre Okusitino twice scored and on a third occasion burst clear to put his winger Quinn Temperon under the posts.

Temperon had plenty of work to do and showed a clean pair of heels when he cut back inside, but it was Okusition’s try.

Mobile prop Mace Andrew, big bopper Cooper Young and Tupou Francis, with his energy, did well in the middle, and behind him the engine purred.

Right winger Ryder Bodley also got in the action, chasing a clear kicking that bounced favourably into his arms.

But Mabel Park SHS got one back two minutes before halftime when left centre Dean Tauaa crashed down the defensive barrier outside and ran 18m to score.

It was an inspired individual effort which could have given the Mabel Park SHS confidence, and the Marsden coach Jesse Maclean ammunition to make sure his side was not complacent after leading 20-0.

Mabel Park then battled away until Marsden winger Temperon scored the only try of the second half two minutes from fulltime.

PREVIEW

While they aren’t in need of any extra motivation for a big local derby showdown against Mabel Park, Marsden State High will find it on their sleeve, their chest and over their heart.

The unbeaten Marsden will tackle Langer Trophy giant-killers Mabel Park on Wednesday in a Logan City local derby.

Marsden SHS is an established Langer powerhouse but Mabel only earned promotion in 2021.

They progressed to win three games last year, and this year the squad celebrated the school’s Queensland schoolboy representative Alex Leapai.

In the last three seasons Mabel Park SHS has benefited from the arrival of six students originally from Marsden SHS – Hamuera Kingi, Sylus I’liga, Marley Lupeomanu, Jackson Howe, Lachlan Buchbach and Tyrese Tovao.

Redcliffe SHS v Wavell SHS, Langer Trophy/Walters Cup

Wavell held their nerve to confirm their spot in the Langer Trophy quarter finals as Redcliffe’s wait for their first win goes on another week. Relive all the action from the LIVE STREAM.

With major points and finals chances on the line, it was the visitors, Wavell SHS, who found their second wind and snuck away with a 20-10 win over Redcliffe in round six of the Langer Trophy.

Neither team could break the deadlock in the opening 10 minutes, with both showing extra effort on the attack and defensive end.

But after 14 minutes, Redcliffe finally found themselves in some good field position, and it was none other than Australian schoolboys player John Fineanganofo who crashed over.

Wavell hit back through a nice inside draw and pass between Carlos Ka and Keyarn Pene, before the visitors were in again just before halftime thanks to some good short-side play on the left-hand touchline from centre Tusi Tofu.

Play resumed in the second half with the score at 10-6, and after Redcliffe’s Loka Toia was held up over the line, the home side drew level with a much-needed try.

Those celebrations didn’t last long though with Wavell SHS marching down the other end minutes later and extending their lead 16-10.

A chip kick in behind was fumbled by the Redcliffe backs and right-side winger Riley Jenkins dived onto the ball to score his first of the afternoon.

With less than three minutes remaining, Toia was sent to the sin bin, and that was all she wrote, with Wavell SHS finishing the match 10-point victors and securing their spot in the quarter finals.

Replay: Walters Cup Round 6 – Redcliffe SHS v Wavell SHS

There wasn’t much in this Walters Cup clash, but some strong defensive efforts from Wavell SHS proved the slight difference in a 22-12 victory against Redcliffe SHS.

With both sides chancing their arm in attack and also going toe-to-toe in the defensive line, it was clear from the opening sets that both sides had come to play.

After 10 minutes Wavell opened the scoring by keeping the ball alive and getting it through a number of hands for their left centre to dive over.

A kick restart that landed out on the full wasn’t how Redcliffe SHS wanted to resume play and that was enough of an invite for Wavell SHS to grab their second.

The next kick restart Redcliffe were able to get the ball back before stringing a few simple sets together to get on the scoreboard.

An improved defensive set from Redcliffe wasn’t enough to stop their opposition with Wavell putting up a high ball and adding to their lead.

Neither team was able to gain momentum after the break until Redcliffe crossed the chalk with a much needed four pointer.

Both sides again held their own on the defensive end, with only one final try coming from Wavell SHS before the referee called full time.

PREVIEW

Both sides will be looking to snag the two points in round six when Redcliffe State High School welcome Wavell State High School in the Langer Trophy at Kayo Stadium.

Redcliffe will be searching for their first win of the season while the sixth-placed Wavell will hope to secure their spot in the Langer Trophy quarter-finals with a second win of the season.

The crunch clash will be exclusive live streamed on KommunityTV via the Courier Mail on Wednesday afternoon, with the Walter Cup clash kicking the action off at 2.30pm.

Both sides are coming off round five losses but both coaches admitted it was a very different feeling in the post-match sheds.

“It was a different feeling compared to our earlier losses in the season,” Wavell SHS head coach Paul Stanley said following his sides 18-8 loss to Keebra Park SHS.

“The boys know that they played well, we’re getting closer to our best each week so the boys were disappointed but they didn’t have regret for not giving their best effort.”

For Redcliffe, head coach Jay Wilkinson labelled the 69-22 defeat to Marsden SHS as ‘embarrassing’.

“It was a little bit embarrassing on our own turf and on a big day,” he said.

“I think we sat down, had a good chat about it and have all recommitted and to be honest it’s been the best week at training in quite a while so they’ve responded well.”

With the top seven sides progressing through to finals at the end of the regular season, Stanley said it was a big game for both sides.

“We’re not looking at the table at all because those boys will be playing at their absolute best and it’s a bit of a rivalry for the boys given we’re so close and they’re playing against their mates,” Stanley said.

“We know the talent that Redcliffe has across the park plus they’ve got one Queensland and one Australian schoolboy in Loka Toia and John Fineanganofo so it’ll be important for us to limit their involvement.”

Wilkinson said his side’s focus had been on continuous improvement each week.

“Marsden was a blimp as we didn’t improve but we’re focused on these last two games of the year and we’re pretty confident that if we can play our style that we can pick up two wins and finish sixth,” he said.

“That gets us into finals but also keeps us in the competition next year which let’s the boys leave a legacy.

“Both sides would like to have a couple more wins so it’ll be which school comes out with more enthusiasm and which side gives it a real crack.”

Keebra Park were given quite a scare as Wavell produced their best performance of the season to nearly pull off a Langer Trophy upset.

Wavell SHS produced their best performance of the season, but it was Keebra Park SHS who prevailed in a thriller.

Keebra Park SHS won 16-8, surviving a spirited Wavell effort, which included a dramatic surge late in the second half.

Down 16-4, Wavell winger Carlos Ka scored a sensational try, snatching the ball from the night sky after a towering bomb across the field from his classy halfback Zac Herdegen. That try reduced the margin to 16-8.

Herdegen then sliced through minutes later, sprinting 20m and throwing a dummy.

He looked certain to score, but he lost his balance as he was headed toward the posts.

Earlier in the half, Keebra Park had extended their margin to 16-4 after a glorious ball from Austin Marsters found his centre, Xavier Tauaifaiga, who scored.

It was a good win by Keebra SHS given the improved execution of Wavell and the unavailability of star halfback Ryder Williams.

Earlier, Jesse Soric delivered Keebra a 10-4 lead at the break with two thrusts on the eve of halftime.

A replacement for Williams, Soric capitalised on Keebra’s last-gasp forward surge late in the half to put his edge forward Jett Bryce into a gap.

While Bryce was tackled by Wavell centre Keyarn Pene, he was able to play-the-ball quickly and Soric, looping around to the blind side, blasted over to score.

Wavell winger Riley Jenkins had a busy debut, scoring the first try of the game and then putting his body in front of his opposite, Zyroam Herlihy, who went within a whisker of scoring for Keebra.

Wavell had started smartly, controlling the ball and giving energetic hooker Harrison Hill chances to shine as the starting dummy half.

They also controlled possession and with Herdegen’s smart kicking game, Wavell were playing their best football of the season.

But Keebra Park’s power forwards were the foundation of their reply, recapturing the lead 6-4, and extending it to 10-4 at the break.

Walters Cup thriller as late conversion seals draw

The battle of the fullbacks finished in a draw and so did the match, with Wavell SHS scoring in the last minute to snatch a 20-20 draw.

Wavell halfback Timahna Tandy kicked a conversion 20 seconds from fulltime – from the sideline – after his centre, Devine Timu, had scored in the corner.

One minute earlier Keebra had scored what looked the winning try by halfback Jai Bilish.

However, Wavell interchange forward Payten Gifford stole possession back for Wavell, giving his side one last throw of the dice.

REPLAY: Wavell SHS v Keebra Park SHS (Walters)

It was a wonderful game featuring Wavell fullback Sangstar Figota and Keebra Park No.1 David Bryenton showing x-factor skills.

Both Figota and his five-eighth, Azariah Toki-Matauri, who is another big gun, provided the horse power leading up to Wavell recapturing the lead, 14-10, into the second half when centre Tremaine Courteney crossed.

In the first half, Figota also made a break from nothing to put his team into position for its second try.

With limited chances Bryenton’s footwork and speed was effortless for Keebra, and it was his half break which also positioned Keebra for its first try of the second half by halfback Jai Bilish.

This was after Bryenton brilliantly scored in the first half.

Bilish’s try 12 minutes from the end enabled Keebra Park to poke its nose level with Wavell – 14-14 – and then Bilish’s second try four minutes from fulltime looked like it had won the game for his side.

Wavell forward Eethan Laga’aia was also an impact player both in defence and with his carries, while Keebra Park prop Christian Rivers finished strongly.

Earlier in the match, Keebra Park scored first down a crowded blindside when centre Kendrix Marsh squeezed over in traffic.

However, Wavell got into their groove with power running and ball control, putting halfback Timahna Tandy into good attacking positions.

Once he ran himself to score, and on another occasion he drove a bomb toward his winger who tapped back inside for centre Devine Timu to cross.

PREVIEW

Wavell SHS students will be inspired by the jerseys they will wear designed by Indigenous students when they confront dangerous Keebra Park on Wednesday.

To celebrate NAIDOC 2023, Wavell’s proud first VIII will be wearing Indigenous jersey designed by their classmates.

Students personal handywork retains Wavell’s traditional school colours, while incorporating beautiful Indigneous artwork in the mid-drift and then bright, earthy colours snaking up the jersey to the neck line.

Wavell coach Paul Stanley said Wavell’s first two loses were “below the standards we set for ourselves’’.

But last week effort was not in question, it was execution, but the signs were positive.

“The players know what needs to change on the field, it’s up to us to get the job done,” coach Stanley said.

Keebra will aim to keep its fire burning.

Keebra have among the fastest players in the competition, and in halfback Ryder Williams they have the best back in the competition not have made the Queensland schoolboys.

Who were the speed merchants of the Langer Trophy competition?

Below are the speed demons who will be in action again on July 13 in round 3 of the Brisbane Broncos-sponsored Allan Langer Trophy elite schoolboy competition.

They are boys who can save tries or score tries because of their pace.

The round 3 games, and all Langer fixtures, were exclusively live streamed by The Courier-Mail, along with News Corp affiliates, on the KommunityTV platform.

An Indigenous boy who had been playing in the Northern Rivers competition, Donovan has speed to burn.

Ray Peru:

Peru played for Burleigh Bears during the summer and is coming back from injury. He is naturally agile.

Redcliffe SHS

Regan O’Connell as a junior playing for the Caboolture Snakes.

Redcliffe will have no shortage of pace this season, with three quicksilver athletes capable of breaking a match open with their pace.

First past the post would be O’Connell, but Risale also has plenty of pace from fullback or centre. Makai Duggan was “just a natural athlete’’ according to Redcliffe coach Jay Wilkinson.

The centre or winger can move and would be Ipswich SHS’s quickest mover. Xavier Kirk would give him a run for his money.

Xavier Kirk:

Ipswich SHS boys Iosefa Kolio, LJ Nonu and Xavier Kirk

Kirk was as quick as they come in the Langer Reserves competition last year and in Ipswich’s Langer Trophy team, he has already shown glimpses of his blistering speed.

Round 1 was a prime example when he broke away for a solo try against Keebra Park.

Like Peckham-Harris, he isn’t the tallest but if he gets on the outside of you it’s pretty much game over.

The little bloke is deceptively quick. He is fast off the mark, but can also sustain pace over a long distance.

Will join 2022 teammates James Frazer, Joven Gyemore and the towering Loko Pasifiki Tonga at the Dragons once the year is out.

MAGIC MEN OF THE HALVES

Tyreece Tait

They don’t come much better – or faster than Tait. The Broncos signed finisher has a long stride and bounces down field at a great rate of knots.

The young representative fullback is dynamic and will give his side plenty of thrust from the back – watch for him pouring down the middle.

Not only is he quick but there’s only few that power through contact like this guy.

John-Paul Donevski:

John-Paul Donevski

John Paul relocated from New South Wales after playing in the NSWCCC for Patrician Brothers Blacktown.

The Penrith junior has pace, which is even more lethal when paired with height – which Doveski has.

A centre, Brooklenn has a couple of gears. Originally from Cairns, he is back from injury and has been gaining more confidence and strength as the months past leading up to the season.

He played wing and centre for Coombabah SHS previously in the Langer, but will be given freedom at fullback. “He has got wheels,’’ said coach Ben Weston.

McCann has already proven that in the three games so far this season.

Tovao is another genuine quick. He is explosive, capable of running in tries from any distance. Jaycob Kingston-Francis is a light stepper whose pace was a big reason for moving from lock into the centres.

These two offer plenty in the speed stakes. Inness is blinding over 10m while winger Izayah can reach top gear quickly, and sustain that speed. And Marsden also has a bolter when it comes to pace. “Will Semu when he is on. He can move,’’ said Marsden SHS coach Matt Hartigan.

For a second rower Bryce has serious wheels. That near impossible trysaver he made against Marsden SHS at Cbus stadium is all the proof you need.

Mason Barber and Jeremiah Havea:

Barber has no shortage of speed at fullback and next to him is the tall Havea who can really move when he gets going.

With Tupuse in the centres, Keebra looked to have more than enough speed in their locker.

Rest assured, this is a competition in which team No. 1 can be beaten by team No.8. The coaches know that, they are not merely uttering the words. They mean it when they tell their players that.

The Courier-Mail, along with News Corp affiliates, will stream every match from the opens division this season on the KommunityTV platform. Round 1 is Tuesday.

In this story we give you a fearless prediction on school squads, while revealing some dark horse players of a competition which has no clear cut favourite.

Marsden SHS:

Marsden seems in good shape.

They have a good spine featuring fullback Saxon Innes, Javon Andrews, halfback Coby Black and hooker Jacob Tinsley, and two elite new players – centre Kylem Vunipola and Lewis Symonds.

Throw into the mix a revitalised Will Semu who made the Queensland 16-18 schoolboys side this week.

Two grand Logan Brothers juniors – Jacob Tinsley and Chris Faagutu

Then into the forwards come some likely types and the mix is potent. A top four berth will be the minimum expectations for this squad.

Of course for the spine to function Marsden’s ball carriers will need to win the ruck and get the ball in Tinsley’s hands swiftly.

Dark horse players

Jacob Tinslay: Dummy half Tinsley is a glue player, a Andrew McCullough type No. 9 who is as honest as the day is long. Importantly he now has a full season of Langer behind him.

He has also been tutored by the best in the business over summer – Marsden SHS staff member and New Zealand No. 9 legend Isaac Luke.

His star halfback Coby Black will only be as good as the service Tinsley delivers.

Braden Teuila: Every team would like a Braden Teuila. He is a strong, dependable edge forward older and wiser from his 2022 experiences.

In cricket it would be like batting after Steve Smith, or performing on the stage following on from Harry Styles or Taylor Swift.

After all, how do you follow in the footsteps of the historic 2022 Ipswich SHS army who won three premierships – Langer, Phil Hall (state) and National Schoolboys titles in an unbeaten season. It was simply the best season.

But this is a chance for these class of 2023 Ipswich kids to put their own stamp on history.

They can be no more than themselves, and with coach Joshua Bretherton at the helm, Oliva Iaulualo and Jack Laing as forward leaders, expect Ipswich to challenge strongly again this season.

We expect Iaulualo to raise his game a notch again alongside his mate David Leota after the pair spearheaded Canterbury to the under 17 premiership in May.

Ipswich will be in this competition up to their ears – don’t worry about that.

The 2023 season is the most open for a while and Ippy are shoulder to shoulder with the best of them. Every bit a chance of going back to back.

Dark horse: Kesaia Su’a

He is from Auckland famous St Paul’s breeding ground and comes to Ipswich with a union and league background.

He is a fierce runner and it took him only one month in the Meninga Cup to earn a Canberra Raiders contract. Su’a has particularly good hands and will put a teammate into a gap with ease.

Tyler Peckham-Harris: He made our Meninga Cup team of the year squad two years running, so why is he a dark horse?

Because last year he played fullback. This year he is the dummy half. Any tired marines around the ruck will be found out.

Mabel Park SHS

Mabel Park entered the competition in 2021, enjoyed a historic three matches last season and will be better again in 2023.

Like Redcliffe, the school had a rugged introduction to Langer in 2021 but have now gained a foothold and there should be no ghosts in the cupboard, particularly given they finished last year with a win over Keebra Park SHS. Put them down for four wins.

Dark horse players:Halves Jackson Howe and Lachlan Buchbach.

Both boys have a grounding from the first class Marsden SHS system and have sought opportunity across Logan City at Mabel.

They have a huge challenge handling both sides of the ruck, but should be excited and back their ability. This, the Langer, is where they want to be, after all.

Caloundra SHS

Caloundra SHS deservedly won their way into the Langer Trophy for the first time and will be no pushover.

They have an experienced core of Brooklenn Mundraby-Grogan, Jack Philp, Tulloch McLellan, Zac Garton and Chase Paterson who will not be intimidated.

Caloundra will not be a big side, but will challenge with skill and unloads. Caloundra will win a match for sure in their foundation season.

Dark horse player: Tyrell Hopkins

While eyes will be directed toward his edge partner on the other side of the field – Zac Garton, and a roving Chase Paterson in the middle, don’t discount bush boy Hopkins on the right edge.

Take him for granted at your peril.

Caloundra will be moving the ball around on both sides of the field which will bring the Nanango junior into play, a challenge he will relish.

He is coming off a Meninga Cup season with the Falcons and is locked and loaded in what is a historic season for Caloundra SHS.

Redcliffe SHS

When Redcliffe hold their first match of the season, they should invite all members of last season’s Firsts back and have them form a guard of honour for the class of 2023.

That group did the hard yards in the school’s first ever season of Langer and it is because of them that Redcliffe SHS will be better again in 2023.

Redcliffe will win its first ever match this season.

And they could win two or three others as well.

Dark horse players: Loka Toia, Henry Sologinkin and Jayden Evans

Middle forwards get better with age and experience and Toia is primed and ready to lead Redcliffe’s middle forward brigade.

He came through a school of hard knocks last season, but by the end of the season was one of the competition’s unsung heroes.

Toia has a wealth of experience behind him, including helping Redcliffe Dolphins win the Langer Trophy in April.

There is a touch of Corey Horsburgh about Sologinkin, an all effort kid who gets in the zone once he cross the touchline. ]

He will be as fit as a fiddle after playing for the Redcliffe club pre-season.

Evans is new to the school, a halfback with explosive skills.

Wavell SHS

Wavell are the sleeping giants of the competition.

They have a very, very good young side coming through, and the tip of the iceberg will be seen this season.

Get them on the same page, and providing they do the basics right and respect possession, we expect nature to take its course and Wavell to find their way into the top four.

Dark horse player: Jayden Butt

Wavell SHS will field an exciting, young team full of skill, vim and vigour. And the perfect player to have around this skilful, excitable group will be Butt.

The Redcliffe Dolphins junior is match hardened after a Meninga Cup season and is now an experienced middle forward campaigner who gathered priceless experience during last season’s Langer season.

He is the type of side every team needs – the style of forward coaches wish they could duplicate.

PBC SHS

With basically the backline that won the QRSS: state championship with South Coast, we expect Palm Beach Currumbin SHS will be very good because they are always very good.

The Reds will field a fleet-a-foot outside back division featuring Puru, Donovan, Stephenson and Litidamu, a group fed by Zane Harrison and Bailey McConnell.

Up front Jackson, Turner etc will be ironman. This is another very fine side.

We predict when the dust settles they will be in the last four – and from there, anything can happen.

Dark horse player: Jett Jackson

Jackson has been an apprentice and now he is about to graduate.

He is a Wayne Bennett type of forward, a steady-eddy who has miles in his legs, a big raw-boned kid who packs a punch in defence.

Jackson has watched Scanlan, Cullan and co lead the PBC SHS pack over the last two seasons, and now he will be the No. 1 man and believe us, he is up to that challenge alongside Brady Turner and Jac Finegan.

Jackson deservedly worked his way into the 37 man Qld under 18 emerging squad.

Keebra Park SHS

Keebra will have a super forward pack. South Coast were driven to victory at this week’s QRSSSL state championships, and Keebra Park players dominated the pack.

It is an exciting new era for Keebra Park SHS as well and like PBC SHS, you know Keebra Park will be good.

It is just a matter of how good. We think it will be semi-final good and when the play-offs get down to the business end, they will be in the final four and pushing for the premiership.

Keebra will have a particularly imposing forward pack around Bryce, Folua and Wailer and two excellent props, Jack Schmidt and Zac Kumbermong, who we will highlight below.

But they have three x-factor players – inform fullback Mason Barber who shone in the Meninga Cup, half Ryder Williams and utility Lotaki.

Dark horse players:

The production line of quality forwards just keeps rumbling on at Keebra Park SHS, a system which spat out Payne Haas and David Fifita and co.

And both Schmidt and Kumbermong will be proud to carry on that forward power tradition.

Both boys have been identified by the QRL as players of potential, and were chosen in a squad to train in game simulation, with Former Origin Greats working alongside the next generation of Queensland talent.

In their ears were FOGS Gavin Cooper, Darius Boyd, Michael Morgan, Brent Tate, Andrew McCullough, Matt Gillett, Matt Ballin, David Stagg, Antonio Kaufusi and Casey McGuire, so the pair have had the best tuition possible.

Mason Barber: It is hard to believe Barber played in the middle last season – and will play fullback in his Langer Trophy debut.

He played so well in the No. 1 jumper over the summer, the Cowboys talent scouts scooped him up.

Jaylan De Groot “could not have imagined” his first start in the Langer Trophy would have led to where he is today.

But the combinations he forged within the Palm Beach Currumbin State High School spine have thrust him to the cusp of the NRL alongside the same teammates he suffered a gut-wrenching grand final loss alongside.

De Groot lined up at fullback in the 2020 side who won the Southeast Queensland schoolboys competition, only to narrowly be defeated by a Kirwan State High outfit featuring current North Queensland Cowboy star Jeremiah Nanai.

It was in that team he played alongside fellow Tweed Colts playmakers Tom Weaver and Oskar Bryant, with the trio all training within the Titans system this year and set to line up this Sunday against Norths Devils at Tugun.

Nanai on that day in Townsville would go on to score a breathtaking double in the Bears 24-20 Phil Hall Cup win, with De Groot graduating at the end of the year and watching the likes of Weaver and Bryant lift the Queensland trophy the following season.

But ahead of the Langer Trophy 2022 tournament beginning next Wednesday, he said it was while at PBC he got a taste of what it took to succeed in elite rugby league, lessons which inevitably led to an NRL trial appearance with the Gold Coast in February.

“It’s a crazy experience, to think that when we were 10 we were all playing together, and now in a Tweed representative side and with an NRL squad it’s a surreal feeling,” De Groot said.

“You go onto the field with all those boys you’ve played footy with for that long and you know what everyone’s doing. You know when Oskar is going from dummy half or when Tom is backing himself.

“The Langer Trophy is a very good pathway for schoolboys footy, to have that big attention with clubs watching them if you play your game and play to win you get known.

“Nanai killed it against us in the final, and he’s killing it in the NRL. There’s players you can tell are going to be good and it makes it good competition and learning for people coming out of school and could be going on.”

Titans Taste

Towards the back end of an intensive 20-week pre-season with the Titans, De Groot took perhaps his grandest steps towards an NRL berth against the Brisbane Broncos.

Lining up for a trial game, the young custodian caught the eye of commenter Andrew Voss for an attempted kick that came off his shin to set up a try.

De Groot would go on to score himself after that, making the most of the extra 8kg of muscle he put on and earning the mantle “the shin kicker” from the popular Fox League figure.

It is a nickname the Seagull has embraced, a proud moniker reminding him of how far he had come in his rugby league journey.

Now he is using that experience to fuel his next pursuit — ideally a Queensland Cup debut by the time 2022 comes to an end.

“The nerves, there were so many nerves, being surrounded by all the older NRL players and just the experience of seeing what they go through on game day,” De Groot said.

“Going out there it wasn’t too big a crowd, but you could feel the energy. Early on I was a bit shy and not too sure what to do … so I stepped back and watched and learnt off a few of the boys.

“It was a big eye opener, you get a bit nervous because you don’t want to drop the ball on first touch. But I caught it off a Broncos dropped ball, went into a tackle and got hit and thought ‘this is the contact level’.

“Now I’m getting more comfortable in and around it all, and my footy has definitely taken a step forward. You go to work and put your all in, it’s a dream job and you can’t take advantage of it.

“I’m definitely eyeing off a Cup debut, I thing that would be a really big achievement.”

Becoming a Leader

De Groot had never considered himself much of an on-field leader prior to a conversation with Tweed Colts coach Aaron Zimmerle this season.

With Weaver sidelined, De Groot was named as captain in the Seagulls clash with Townsville, a decision the youngster admitted “shocked” him at first.

But as he plots a grand final appearance in the under-21s competition he said it was a progression he was eager to take further.

Given his hopes of ascending into an NRL squad full-time from 2023 and beyond, he said it was a crucial phase of his development towards realising that goal.

“I was a bit shocked to be honest, I didn’t think I would be captaining the side. Coach said ‘you see everything from the back, I need you to spread your energy to everyone’,” De Groot said.

“Captaining Tweed was a big honour for me. I haven’t captained a side, it’s never been a role of mine, but I’m transitioning into leader.

“I’m trying to do more of that. I haven’t really put myself forward to be a leader, but especially after the NRL experience I felt like I had stuff to show and put out.

“It’s been a shame all this rain has been for so long, but when we step on the field we’ll be ready to play the footy we know we can play.”

The Next Gen

Those who De Groot played alongside in PBC colours have since left the esteemed school, all except one who he dubbed a “freakish” talent.

Michael Roberts was only in grade 10 when he took his place on the wing alongside the 2020 fullback in the Phil Hall Cup decider, and now looms as the most experienced member of the red army’s top side.

In PBC’s emphatic triumph in last year’s tournament, he starred at five-eighth, while he is also capable of playing in the centres and at fullback.

With their Langer Trophy campaign to begin on June 1 against Marsden State High School — with the match to be livestreamed on the Gold Coast Bulletin website.

De Groot identified the youngster as a player to watch when the action kicks off.

“If you give him the ball he’ll get you points, he’s got game knowledge and awareness and to come in in year 10 to an older system it shows the quality he has,” De Groot said.

“I only got a couple of games with him, and it was more his grind game. He’s a special kid, he’s very talented (and) he’s a freakish kid.”
