NSWCIS win ASSRL u15 Championships

NSW Combined Independent Schools have claimed back-to-back ASSRL Under-15 boys championships after a tense 18-10 win over Queensland Maroon in the final.

While it was a classic final encounter, which leant into all the feelings of a State of Origin showdown, there was one passage of play that defined the NSWCIS glory.

Camped on their own line in defence midway through the first half, NSWCIS front rower Cameron Makey pulled off a remarkable try-saving tackle, holding rival Christian Rivers up over the line before muscling him back into the field of play.

His effort was backed up by another try-saver on the last tackle.

But it was on the ensuing set, when five-eighth Talen Risati put in a booming 40-20, which started on his own 30 metre line, which truly turned the contest.

NSWCIS scored the first try of the game off the following play the ball, through big boppa Isaiah Shock, and never looked back.

Risati and dummy-half Ashton Large put in five-star performances to power their side to victory.

Queensland Maroon refused to give up the fight, and managed to get themselves back in the game with a try to Kingston Seve to head to the sheds 12-4 down at halftime.

NSWCIS maintained their advantage throughout the second half, and looked to have pushed ahead on two more occasions except for the final pass floating forward out of the hands.

The errors almost became costly for the side when Ignatius Park College halfback Riley Carbone split the defence to bring Queensland Maroon back within two points.

But that was the closest they would come to the title, with NSWCIS lock forward Sam Polley streaming through a gap in the final minutes to seal the national title.

Queensland have claimed the inaugural u16 girls ASSRL national championship after a gutsy 28-16 win over NSWCHS.

CHS started off well, securing a try in the opening minutes from consistent scorer Brandy Simpson.

But from there it was all Queensland, who scored two tries from Deleni Paitai and Okalani Compton for a solid 16-4 half time advantage.

It only took three minutes into the second half to add more points with Shalom Sauaso finding space for another try.

CHS we’re sloppy in possession, letting the Queenslanders gain solid meters in counterattacks.

CHS started their comeback midway though the second half with Koffi Brookfield ploughing through to the line to get the deficit down to 12 points.

Sauaso got her second try almost immediately after and despite CHS’s never say die attitude, Queensland took the win 28-16.

Boys Pool B Final – First Nations Goannas v Western Australia

The Goannas have clinched the John Allen Trophy as Under-15 Boys Pool B winners at the ASSRL Nationals after a golden-point thriller.

After the Goanna’s 40-6 thrashing of Western Australia in the pool stage, no one expected such a close battle in the Pool B grand final.

The Goannas appeared down and out in the final minutes, before a piece of magic from centre Jimi Kusu sent the match into extra time.

Up stepped the man of the moment, Goannas halfback Callum Miskell, who threw caution to the wind and barrelled his way across the stripe to secure a 20-16 win.

It was a seesawing contest, with the two sides trading blows down the stretch.

WA’s Carter Nikita opened the scoring just seven minutes in, but the Goanna’s Ashton Allen responded just two minutes later to even the scoring.

The Goannas went a man down after fullback Kyron Nixon-Croaker was sent to the bin for a dangerous lifting tackle.

WA wasted no time taking advantage as Kyron Arthy gave his side an 8-4 lead at half time.

The Goannas struck straight away in the second half with Jerome Murgha once again levelling the scores.

Two consecutive tries from WA, including a very sloppy play for Michael Turukawa, gave WA a comfortable two try buffer with around 10 minutes to go.

Nixon-Croaker made up for his sin-bin by scoring a try and putting the Indigenous side back in contention before Kusu struck in the shadows of full time.

U16 Girls Third-Place Playoff: Victoria v NSWCIS

NSWCIS have claimed third place in the inaugural under 16 girls ASSRL national championship after downing Victoria 26-4.

It took no time at all for CIS to gain the advantage with Mia Vaotu’ua scoring a try on the team’s first possession.

Victoria were looking hesitant with the ball but gained more confidence through the half.

Both teams struggled to make any real impact for the rest of the opening half, though Victoria was gifted some chances that they couldn’t capitalise on.

CIS once again opened the scoring in the second half courtesy of Talea Tonga, but Victoria were quick to strike back.

Eboni Heurea sparked a comeback midway through the second half with a solid try right under the posts.

It was short lived, with CIS another three more tries before the buzzer to take the win 26-4.

Grand Finals Preview

NSW Combined Independent Schools’ star dummy-half Ashton Large has sent an ominous warning to ASSRL Nationals grand finals rival Queensland Maroon on the eve of the decider.

“We are keen for it, we will be ready and we’re coming for Queensland,” Large said after toppling NSWCHS in the semifinal.

The Scots College star, who is part of the Wests Tigers pathways, will be chasing his second-straight ASSRL Under-15 boys title after being part of the winning NSWCIS squad last year in Queensland.

He is not alone in that quest with Keone Anitelea-Tsioussis and Talen Risati also backing up from last year’s national title-winning squad in the big game against Queensland Maroon.

The Under-15 Boys Championship decider will headline a huge final day at the ASSRL Nationals in Port Macquarie, which kicks off with an Under-16 girls third-place playoff at 9am.

Queensland will also feature in the inaugural Under-16 Girls grand final when they clash with fellow undefeated rivals, NSW Combined High Schools, while the First Nations Goannas will put their undefeated streak on the line against Western Australia in the Boys Plate Final.

Large has been one of the players of the tournament, and said he was proud of the way his side had bounced back after an early round loss to Queensland Maroon on Monday.

“I thought we started rusty in the first two games, but (in the semi-final) we completed our sets and stuck to our structure and we played a lot better,” Large said.

“The boys put in a big effort. We just stick to our structure, kept doing what we did. I am so proud.”

The Queensland Maroon side, which has combined an impressive engine room up front with skilled playmakers out the back, has been the team to beat all tournament and will likely enter the grand final favourites.

The inaugural girls decider could come down to a coin flip – with both Queensland and NSWCHS topping their respective groups with undefeated runs through the tournament.

The girls from the Sunshine State were dominant knocking off NSWCIS 30-0 in the semi-final, while their NSW counterparts had little trouble getting past Victoria.

Queensland lock forward and tournament highlight reel, Shalom Sauaso, said she knew her side had to find another gear in the grand final.

“I think I am feeling nervous now we are going onto the big game,” she said.

“I think we need to work a bit better at getting depth in our play. We know NSW is such a talented team, they know how to shift the ball side to side and they are really good in their communication. We know we need to go up a little bit with our work.”

NSW CHS dummy-half Koffi Brookfield said her side were excited to play in the momentous game after coming together well over the past week.

“It feels awesome to be in a grand final, especially at a tournament like this. It is our first one so it is pretty exciting,” she said.

“I knew our team could do it and we have definitely gelled. It was definitely a good experience and we knew we could get here with our teamwork.”

While a defensive master class ensured NSW CHS picked up good reward for their week’s work, Victoria arguably came up with the best result.

NSWCHS have claimed third in the U15 boys tournament after an entertaining grudge match against Queensland White on Thursday.

It was a tough battle, with CHS making the most of the chances they created to win 10-0.

Callum Elsley was the only try scorer, producing two stunners while his team kept Queensland scoreless.

It was the only match where Queensland White failed to score a point and was a frustrating end to their championship.

BOYS – ACT 52 d NT 10

The ACT left their best performance for last as they demolished Northern Territory in their final ASSRL U15 boys national championships match.

The massive 52-10 scoreline was highlighted by a hat-trick for winger Uhila Tai.

The NT mounted a small comeback midway through the second half when they scored two tries, but it was shortlived.

The win is the only one for the ACT this week, while NT head home without a victory.

BOYS: Victoria 24 d NSWCCC 22

Victoria and NSWCCC have put on a classic for their final U15 boys match in Port Macquarie.

Victoria’s narrow 12-10 halftime lead was quickly hunted down by CCC, who jumped out to a 22-12 lead midway through the second half.

But the Vics refused to give up, snatching back the lead 24-22 with a try in the last minute off a grubber kick.

They then had to agonisingly watch a NSWCCC penalty shot at goal in the dying seconds drift wide before securing the win.

Coach Hamish Pearce said it was a fantastic showing from his side.

“Being a traditional pool B team, it was really good to come up against a side like that and see where we’re at,” Pearce said.

“I think the effort they put in today was the best game of the week.”

GIRLS: NSWCCC 46 d NT 0

They may have been a disappointing championship, but NSWCCC have ended their girls U16 ASSRL national campaign on a massive high.

Their 46-0 demolition of Northern Territory featured eight tries from seven different players. Summer Dowell contributed a double.

Emily Dietrich was in great form with the boot, kicking seven goals and earning her team’s player of the match award.

It was a brutal ending to the tournament for Northern Territory, who head home without a win.

GIRLS – WA 14 d ACT 12

Western Australia have produced a stunning second half comeback to claim an impressive two-point victory over the ACT in a tense U16 girls encounter on Thursday.

The ACT had the upper hand in the first half following two tries to Ella van dam Heuval and Reese Paunovic.

However, the second half was all Western Australia, but a missed conversion on the second try of the half seemed to seal the win for ACT.

But the WA side we’re not done, and a final minute try to Kylah-Rey Tuheke Kupa stole them the win 14-12.

The calm before the grand final storm is set to descend over the ASSRL National Championships in Port Macquarie on Thursday.

As teams in grand final deciders prepare for their big moment, the remaining sides will have a chance to shoot for the minor placings on field at Port Macquarie Regional Stadium.

Five games will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV, headlined by the Boys Under-15 third-place playoff between Queensland White and NSW CHS.

Both sides will be licking their wounds after falling short in Wednesday’s semi-finals, despite both sides landing the first blow int heir respective matches.

NSW CHS, who had finished the pool stage undefeated, managed to score an early try against NSW CIS, before they failed to find the chalk again across the 60 minutes.

Queensland White fared similarly, scoring first against their Queensland Maroon counterparts, before falling too far behind on the scoreboard.

Queensland White will be confident they can roll with a bit of momentum after mounting a late fightback in their semi-final loss and showing they have the talent to threaten the top teams.

The two sides have met once before during the tournament, when a Tristan Ross double helped NSWCHS to a thrilling six-point win.

Day six of the ASSRL Nationals will also feature crossover clashes in the Under-15 Boys and Under-16 Girls tournaments as teams battle for the minor placings.

It’s one of rugby league’s showcase junior tournaments – and it kicks off with a bang from Port Macquarie on Saturday. Catch 13 games LIVE.

The action kicks off with two matches from the U15 boys tournament before the girls round robins.

Queensland Maroons have made a massive statement of intent, thrashing ACT 38-4 to open their ASSRL U15 boys national championship campaign in some style.

Three Maroons players scored doubles, including skipper Lincoln Dalton, while the ACT could only secure the one try.

Queensland came out all guns blazing, scoring three tries in the opening 10 minutes through Majah-Jose Peachy, Kingson Seve and Dalton.

ACT worked into the game towards halftime, maintaining more possession until it finally paid off.

A strong set down the width of the field found Tyler Stonham, who offloaded to Uhlia Tai for the try.

The Queenslanders hit back straight away courtesy of Ethan Grimshaw, who had just been brought into the match.

It took the Maroons 11 minutes to score their first try after the break when a brilliant play by captain Dalton put the game away.

Peachy added a second try, running the full length of the field following an intercept right on his own try line, while Grimshaw planted his own not long after.

A penalty goal for the Maroons to end the match sealed the victory.

PREVIEW

NSW Combined Catholic Colleges (CCC) coach Brad Melville believes the depth in his squad will be key as they prepare to open the inaugural ASSRL U16 Girls Nationals on Saturday.

The NSWCCC side will kick off the girls tournament against rivals NSW Combined High Schools, before also clashing with Western Australia and NSW Combined Independent Schools on a frantic opening day.

Every match of the ASSRL Nationals will be exclusively LIVE STREAMED on KommunityTV, with Saturday’s action kicking off with two matches from the U15 boys tournament before the girls round robins.

With the girls tournament played in a shortened 20-minute game format for the round games, it means sides will play three games a day, with a rest day in between matches, before finals kick off on Wednesday.

The finals will be played in a longer 50-minute format.

Melville said the increased number of games, and short turnaround between matches, would mean every player in the 20-women squad will be called upon.

“I think that’s been the most difficult part of the preparation,” coach Melville said.

“Making sure we’ve got the depth in our squad to do both formats.

“We’ve had to obviously prepare for short games, where you’ve got to just be ready to go. Then once you hit the finals they’re full games, so we’ve had to pick a squad that can do both.”

Melville said a key focus for him was to build a team that can deliver no matter who is on the field.

Sienna Thomas will have a big role to play for NSWCCC.

Halves Sienna Thomas (St Brigid’s Catholic College) and Macey Cox (St Joseph’s, Aberdeen) will steer the side around the park, while Melville has backed his engine room to match it with most sides in the competition.

“We’ve got some really quality halves that can guide the team around, our front row and lock can just really get our team forward,” he said.

“We’ve also got some really powerful girls coming off the bench, so I think we’ve got all our bases covered.”

Melville said the competition will be a bit of an unknown for the girls and they have tried to select a team that can play to all strengths.

The NSWCCC selectors have picked three girls for the side’s leadership team, who were all named as standouts from the trials in August.

“We’ve got three players that will lead the side as captains in Macey Cox, Sienna Thomas and Lily Ryan,” he said.

“They just have this ability to bring all the girls together, we saw that at the trials and we’ve seen it at training since.”

Queensland v NSW CIS

Queensland five-eight Esther Pedro put on a mini masterclass as the Maroons schoolgirls powered to victory 21-0 over NSW CIS.

Queensland drew first blood courtesy of smart Ipswich SHS Year 11 student Pedro who scrambled right after a wide spread threatened to break down.

Esther’s passing game then came to the fore, with a bullet pass hitting her winger Relna Wuruki-Hosea on the chest. Hosea finished expertly and it was 9-nil.

And soon after Pedro lobbed a nice ball into space, with edge forward Lennice Wright running a gorgeous line to score.

Marsden SHS winger Mercedez Taulelei-Siala then scorched 60m to score and at 17-nil after 10 minutes, the result was decided.

While Pedro and her backs feasted, they have the Queensland forwards to thank for the foundation.

Queensland had started strongly, attacking with their defence and blockading the middle where Armani-Lea Auvae and Reegan Hicks stood like loyal soldiers.

Hooker Nadia Windleborn (Merrimac SHS) was also tenacious.

NSWCHS v NSWCCC

NSWCCC claimed a last second derby win over NSWCHS in a ripping last match of the day from Redcliffe.

There was not a struck match between the teams, with NSWCCC winning 8-5 in a gritty victory after Evie Jones (St Joseph’s) crossed.

It came down to the last play of the game, with fullback Elizabeth McGregory (Red Bend Catholic College) sending a pass to centre Jones.

NSWCCC drew battlelines early with stoic defence from fullback McGRegor and five-eight McGrath (St Mary Star of the Sea) who was also a constant threat with the ball.

Twice NSWCCC also held NSWCHS up over the line, but there was no stopping NSW CHS dummy half Mere Rasaku (Bass High School) who capitalised on a bulldozing ruck run by Monica Fasavala-Faamausili.

It was 5-nil, eight minutes into the clash.

NSWCCC were down, but not out, and a surging edge effort from No.13 Paige Bohringer (James Sheahan Catholic High) cut CHS’s advantage to one point – 5-4.

Then late, very late, came Jones’ try for CCC.

Western Australia v Northern Territory

Western Australian centre Phoenix Mahaki scored two tries as WA rose marginally above their rivals to win 13-nil.

Mahaki, from Seda College, shone through the gloom – and WA needed her to in what was a challenging cross border stoush with brave Northern Territory.

Despite the scoreline, there was little in the game and WA needed every point they could muster.

The spirit of NT was emphasised by two magnificent try saving tackles from NT winger Honey Chastain.

NT’s effort was spearheaded by prop Keiko Fordimail.

WA’s third try was scored by Byford Secondary College student Taliana Mika.

ACT v Victoria

Under lights at Kayo Stadium the second last game of day one was here and it was the Australian Capital Territory Secondary Schools girls who dug their heels in and shot out to an early lead – before pinching a 13-12 win in the final stages.

Victoria looked to have secured the result when up 12-9 with two minutes to play but ACT hooker Indi Dyball had different ideas when ducking under the defence with a try close to the line, breaking her opponent’s hearts with a telling blow.

Second rower Layla Irving and speedy centre Samantha Nealon dazzled for points.

The Victorian Secondary Schools girls took a bit longer to click into gear but when they did it was a scary sight.

First to strike was lock powerhouse Faith Vili of St Albans Secondary College and not long after her it was one of the discovery players of the day in Koreti Leilua.

She was seriously good in all three matches she played on the day.

Victoria took the lead quickly through two try hero Vili to inch ahead 12-9 but Dyball threw her cape on and saved the game with a dummy half scoot.

Queensland v Northern Territory

Queensland prop Alice Shannon was unstoppable while newcomers Lila Parr and Esther Pedro set Kayo Stadium alight as the Maroons powered to a 25-0 win, their second win of the day.

Shannon was a force to be reckoned with, rucking the ball relentlessly into the teeth of the NT pack.

Behind Shannon and her fellow forwards, halves Parr and Pedro were terrific.

NSW Combined Independent Schools v Western Australia

NSW CIS fullback Juanita Jang (SEDA College) saved the day with the tackle of the championships so far as NSW CIS got out of jail to beat Western Australia 5-0.

With the game scoreless wwell into the second half, fullback Jang felled a runaway WA No.13 Topaz Porter who looked try bound.

Minutes later NSW CIS crossed for the only try of the match.

NSW CCC v ACT

Flashes of enterprise from NSW CCC No.13 Paige Boringer and five-eight Evie McGrath drove their side beyond the clutches of an heroic ACT.

NSW CCC won 17-4, but the scoreline did not reflect the close nature of the schoolgirls match.

NSW CCC scored three late tries, with two of them scored by Boringer (James Sheahan Catholic School) and McGrath (St Mary Star of the Sea).

NSW Combined HIgh Schools v Victoria

Indie Bostock scored the individual try of day one as NSW CHS prevented a boilover to beat Victoria 16-5.

Bostock, from Warilla High School , halfback Kasey Reh (Figtree High School) and winger Mia Walsh (Illawarra Sports High) were the try scoring heroes, with the trio putting on brilliant exhibitions to score.

Queensland v Western Australia

Long-striding Tavarna Papalii finished a sensational team try as Queensland schoolgirls made an impressive debut at the ASSRL Nationals on Saturday.

Papalii, from the Keebra Park SHS catchment but with signed with the Sydney Roosters, scored next to the posts after Queensland had swept play right and then back to the left.

Papalii had a big match, including holding up a rival up over the tryline as Queensland posted a 25-0 victory over Western Australia.

Papalii said she was approached last year to trial for the Roosters and this year hit the Sydney junior girls competition with gusto.

“It (signing with the Roosters) was not something I planned to do,’’ she said.

“Blake Cavallaro (head of pathways, Roosters) approached me and they offered me to play Tarsha Gale.

“It was something out of my comfort zone but I thought it would be good exposure playing Tarsha Gale in Sydney.’’

The Roosters even had plans to blood Papalii in their Harvey Norman women’s squad, but she was too young.

“So I finished off a season with Tarsha Gale (under 19s) and I was offered a contract.’’

She now lives in Sydney but does online learning with Keebra Park SHS on the Gold Coast.

NSW CIS v Northern Territory

NSW CIS surged late to dismantle a willing Northern Territory 17-4.

Second half tries from wingers Charlotte Byrne and Shanelle Lyons and impressive left edge forward Bronte Ryan raised their side to safety after a rousing effort by the Territory girls.

ACT v NSW Combined High Schools

NSW Combined High Schools five-eighth Lilly-Ann White engineered a convincing 17-0 win.

White was tremendous, putting teammates into space, turning defenders inside out and organising the line.

NSWCHS had plenty of pace about them and from first glance they loomed as the main challengers to Queensland.

NSW Combined Catholic Colleges pulled off a thrilling 9-8 win over Victoria.

With ball in hand, NSWCCC were threatening, but it was an eight-minute period of incredible goal line defence which proved the difference.

Rockingham Lead The Way In High School Cup Competitions

On Thursday the 4th of November, the finals of our NRL WA Fuel to Go & Play High School Cup competitions were played at NRL WA Training & Education Centre at Thomas Oval, Medina.

Year 8, Year 9 and Year 10 finals were contested for the Fuel To Go & Play Schools Competitions, with the might of the Rockingham Senior High School taking on the always strong Atwell College in all the games.

Also for the first time ever, thanks to NRL WA Media Partner Local Media Services Company, all the grand finals were streamed live on YouTube, so that those unable to make the game could watch the fixtures live.

In a first for schoolboy rugby league in Western Australia, a large portion of the competition was made available live, thanks to Dave McRae and his team.

In the Year 8 fixture, bookend Kayne Poko lead an inspired Rockingham Senior High School to a comprehensive 30-6 victory against an ultimately outclassed Atwell College side.

On the back of a big performance from their forwards, the Rockingham side controlled the contest from the beginning of the game with big runs from Poko, standout Majah Peachey, Weylan Antonelli and Darcey Gane.

With half Tahupotiki Awhiu-Kerei reveling in all the free space and time, they put the sword to the gutsy Atwell side.

For Atwell, classy half Ricco Lilii tried incredibly hard, along with relative unknown Carrick Sutherland who ended up in almost everything and front rower Ruan Oliver, who never stopped trying.

Rockingham senior High school year 9 High School Cup 2021

Moving onto the Year 9 fixture, it was a similar story, this time with player of the game Majah Peachey using his speed and strength to dominate the fixture.

With the imposing Stacie Reweti, Rihare TeRauna and Nikau Hepi in their lineup, they were just a case of too big and too strong for the Atwell College side.

Featuring classy halves Landyn Johnson and Te Auturoa Awhitu-Kerei leading the side around, they were a class above as they ran out 38-16 winners.

Although Atwell never went away in the contest and late on showed that if they got enough ball they could definitely do damage.

The diminutive Vann Jager lost no fans as he continue to play well above his weight, with Fabian Leituala and Lincoln Kemp showing their worth in the lopsided contest.

Kemp in particular was a incredible leader, playing the full fixture and topping both the run and tackle count for the Atwell side.

Rockingham senior High school year 10 High School Cup 2021

And finally the Year 10 fixture was upon us, and in a back and forth affair where the momentum swung at different times.

Rockingham Senior High School completed the treble when they outlasted the Atwell College side, winning 26-10.

Rockingham kicked out to an early lead, but a period of sustained pressure from a committed Atwell side had the game in the balance for a long period, before the RSHS finished with a late long range try.

Young hooker Shae Trower was player of the grand final, with a super honest and directive performance. Supported well by five-eight Tom Leeder and dangerous centre Quintin Reichardt, they simply had too much in the tank for the Atwell side.

Atwell were superbly led by another diminutive playmaker in Tevita Alatini, who continued to poke and probe and cause problems for the Rockingham defence.

A big game from Leituala again and he was ably supported by Dylan Bloomer, who was another tyro involved in everything.

A great day for all involved for our high school competitions, and we hope to see many of the kids in the competitions in and out of school in the near future as 2021 draws to a close.

With such talent in both squads, the thirst for rugby league continues to grow in our WA Schools and we hope to see more involved in the near future.
