USA pull out of Euro u18 champ’s

European rugby league u19s championship tournament update

In response to issues beyond their control, the USA Rugby League management has informed European Rugby League of their intention to withdraw from the U19s Championship in France in July. The decision has been accepted by ERL without penalty.

Fortunately Canada have been able to amend their plans to tour Europe with an U19s squad.

Canada will now in the tournament at the Centre de Ressources, d’Expertise et de Performance Sportive (CREPS), Font Romeu in the Catalonian Pyrenees between 10 and 19 July 2026, which will provide them with a more comprehensive schedule and reduced logistics and costs.

“Whilst we are disappointed that USA will not be able to compete in the U19s Championship, I am very pleased that Canada are able to take their place,” said ERL chair Dean Andrew.

USA’s withdrawal has been handled professionally by their management, and we have been able to negotiate that smoothly to offer Canada the vacant space which becomes a great fit for them.

I’m very grateful to John Cameron and his team at CRLA for changing their plans and pleased that ERL is able to contribute to the development of international rugby league across the full scope of its membership.”

A further announcement with the tournament structure and fixtures will be made shortly.

European rugby league u19s championship expands to 10 nations

The fourth European Rugby League U19s Championship will expand to a record ten nations when it takes place at the Centre de Ressources, d’Expertise et de Performance Sportive (CREPS), Font Romeu in the Catalonian Pyrenees between 10 and 19 July 2026.

Norway and Greece will make their tournament debuts, while Wales and Ireland return to the Championship after last competing in 2022 in Italy. Then, Wales achieved a bronze medal in the Championship and Ireland were crowned Shield champions.

Rugby League Norge president, Anne Haigh, commented: “We have been developing our youth programme for some time and played several games at both U16s and U19s already. It is time that we tested ourselves in a competitive environment and give our youth players the opportunity to experience such big a tournament. We’re very much looking forward to travelling to France and being part of the event.”

“Its great news for the Greek Rugby League Federation that we are able to move forward and compete in the European Rugby League U19s Championship in 2026,” said GRLF official,

Terry Liberopoulos. “We are aiming to further progress and become full members of International Rugby League, and a key part depends on the growth of our youth programme. Having the opportunity to represent their country will be a massive motivator for the young people playing rugby league in Greece.”

The quartet join reigning champions England, hosts France, Scotland, Serbia, Ukraine and USA, the young Hawks continuing their participation from the 2024 tournament in Belgrade when they made their bow, the Americas coming under ERL jurisdiction.

France won the 2018 tournament with a narrow 26-24 victory over England in the final but were beaten 14-12 in 2022’s decider by England, the English going on to become back-to-back champions in 2024 after coming from behind against France to triumph 15-8.

“I’m very pleased that we have been able to grow the competition to ten nations,” said ERL chair Dean Andrew.

“The appetite for youth rugby league in Europe is growing and each of the competing nations is built on the back of active youth programmes in the respective countries showing that they are on solid foundations and thinking about their future supply of players.

The U19s Championship is always an exciting event and adding a further dimension to it with new competitors will generate even more interest.”

The format and fixtures for the European Rugby League U19s Championships will be confirmed in early 2026.

In the two ranking games to complete the European U19s Championship in Belgrade, unlimited substitutions ensured that all squad members were given a run and to help counter the week’s considerable heat.

A hat trick try from USA centre Siaosi Koloamatangi two minutes from time ensured a 26-22 win over determined Ukraine, the conditions cooler after morning rain.

“We came here not knowing what to expect or how our boys would go but to win two of our three games is very pleasing,” said USA Young Hawks head coach, George Tupou.

This was a tough game

“This was a tough game but we managed to win it and this brings us a lot of attention and a hopefully a wider pool of talent, it’s getting our name out there.”

Ukraine lost influential Ryan Jurkans, who was injured in a tackle after the game’s opening break away in the first minute but they opened the scoring when Ryslan Lipisii created the space for Arsen Havdo to burrow his way over.

Drayson Moliga returned a penalty kick that failed to find touch half-way to spectacularly dive between the posts, giving Lidarius Moananu an easy shot on goal to nose USA in front.

Koloamatangi latched onto a sublime offload to move USA further ahead and added his second three minutes later, Michael Fonua converting the first.

Ihor Yefanov stepped and dummied his way into the corner for Ukraine to keep them in touch, adding a superb conversion from the touchline to make it 16-10 at the interval.

In the 45th minute, Popeliuk Valerii angled his run to the posts, Yefanov levelling, and Andrii Mordovanets capitalised on a USA mix up at the back from a kick for Vitaliy Bycharskyi to add an easy conversion.

Isaac Fonua hit back for USA on the hour mark, diving into the corner from brother Michael’s pass, but Moananu was unable to convert. Koloamatangi had the final word, just latching onto a kick into the in goal to settle the outcome, giving Chris Malo an easy shot on goal.

Yefanov was sent off for disputing the decision, leaving Ukraine shorthanded for the final two sets of a superb game.

Ukraine U19s coach, Ihor Yurkin, commented: “It was a great game, we tried our best throughout and even though we lost this – and the whole tournament – has been a great experience for our boys.”

After the tournament formalities, the Ukraniain squad left on a two day bus journey back home.

Scotland proved to be too strong in their final match, defeating hosts Serbia 56-0 in a contest not without controversy.

Jacob Grierson crossed for Scotland’s second try in the 12th minute but was then sent off for punching.

Serbia’s Sasa O’Flynn dispatched to the sin bin for his part in the incident which was also placed on report – but the Scots took the setback in their stride.

“It was an impressive win for the boys,” said Scotland U19 coach Mark Milnes.

It was a really gritty victory

‘It was a really gritty victory and great to see a lot of young lads make their debuts.

We have a development programme in place and hopefully this is the start of something.”

Frazer Murray opened the scoring before Grierson dropped the ball over line prior to his try and red card and, with both sides a man down, Tom Gray and Harry Roper went over, Michael Myles perfect with the boot.

With Serbia restored to 13 men they showed more promise and pressure, camping out on Scotland’s line for several sets but couldn’t make it pay, Bailey Schneider extending Scotland’s lead.

Centre Murray posted his brace a minute into the second half and Jack Suddick found his way to the line ten minutes later, Oli Brady on successful kicking duties.

A powerful run from 40m out by prop Isaac Reid added further points just after the hour mark, Isaac Jepson crossing on the next set.

Scotland’s tenth try came from a long Hayden Cumming break, Maxwell Shelton backing up for the touchdown.

Serbia coaching consultant, Darren Fisher, said: “It’s been a great competition overall and for our boys it’s been a great learning curve.

It’s been good to see us put some structure in our game as the competition went on. We’re pretty pleased despite the results.”

Euro u19s team of the tournament announced

The organisers of the 2024 European Rugby League U19s Championship, held in Serbia capital Belgrade, have praised the competing teams for their contribution to a successful tournament, while also announcing the competition’s Dream Team.

Selected by ERL coaching manager Martin Crick, the side recognises performances over all of the matches. All the selected players were presented a trophy to recognise their achievement.

England retained the title after a thrilling 15-8 victory over France in the Championship decider. ERL general manager, David Butler, commented:

“I would like to thank England, France, Scotland, Serbia, USA and Ukraine for providing us with a fantastic festival of rugby league over the last 11 days.

“The quality on display was excellent, history was made at several junctures not least with USA playing their first youth international games and winning two, and England recording the first back-to-back U19s Championship.

It was again humbling to welcome the Ukrainians despite the challenges that they continue to face, and we were pleased to see Scotland return to the competition.

“As has become tradition, over the course of the time together, the teams’ interaction and support of one another was remarkable and friendships between players and staff from all nations have been formed for life.

“I would like to thank our team of match officials who came together from eight different countries to support the tournament, some of whom brought great experience and shared and supported those newer to the game to give everyone a positive experience.”

Butler added: “I would also like to recognise the extensive efforts that the Serbian Rugby League Federation went to in organising the tournament and providing an unprecedented level of support to the competition.

Overall we achieved improved media coverage of the event which increased the tournament’s reach, with over 100,000 views of the games which were broadcast live on Facebook.”

Scotland progress to u19s European Championship semi finals as USA debut

Scotland withstood an opening barrage from USA to progress to the semi finals of the 2024 European U19s Championship in a delayed tie at the FC Radnicki Stadium in Belgrade, winning 32-10.

The clash was held over because of travel difficulties after storms in the region and despite a 10.30am local time kick off, temperatures continued to swelter with only a light relieving breeze.

USA’s Young Hawks, in their first-ever outing, made a great impression especially early on but Scotland’s greater nous, displayed by their excellent spine, saw them home.

“It was a really enjoyable occasion despite the heat which affected handling a little for both sides,” said Scotland U19s head coach Leigh Beattie.

“The lads are already in the ice bath’s preparing for favourites France, they’ll be no lack of effort for that match.”

Scotland prop Isaac Reid had the first chance but spilt the ball on his way to the line.

The Hawks quickly growing into the contest and claiming the opening try when Drayson Moliga spectacularly dived into the left corner, Lidarius Moananu with a superb conversion from the touchline.

Scotland full back Hayden Cumming spotted a gap to respond from close in and his side went ahead soon after, Seth Clapham finishing a fine passing move to the left for the first of his brace of tries, Maxwell Shelton adding the extras.

Tries just before and after the break put the Scots in control, Jack Suddick on an overlap on the right before hooter and Clapham with his second at the start of the second period with another clinical finish.

Winger Isaac Jepson appeared to have added a further try shortly afterwards but Clapham’s pass was ruled forward.

Impressive Moananu crashed over for USA

Impressive Moananu crashed over for USA out wide just after the hour to keep them in contention, but he pushed his conversion attempt wide.

The Hawks sent a kick out on the full and then compounded the error with a goal line drop also heading over the touchline allowing Shelton to establish a 12-point lead from the penalty.

Jepson gained his reward cleaning up Clapham’s offload and the best was saved until last with loose forward Tom Gray’s excellent long-range midfield break completing the try scoring, Shelton with his fourth successful shot at goal.

George Tupou, USA Young Hawks head coach, commented:

“I’m really proud of the boys in their first competitive performance. It was the first time they’ve played as a team. A couple of silly mistakes at play the balls cost them but we made history.

A little bit of lack of experience showed but Scotland played well, they knew how to capitalise.”

Scotland will now face France in the second semi final on Wednesday at 6pm (local time), while USA will take on hosts Serbia in the 5th v 6th play-off match at 2pm on the same day.

Squads arrive in Belgrade for European u19 Championship

The six nations competing in the 2024 Rugby League European Championship have arrived in the Serbian capital Belgrade. The tournament opens with quarter-final games tomorrow (Sunday) between Serbia and Ukraine, followed by Scotland versus USA.

Defending champions England’s Community Lions enter at the semi-final stage to take on either Serbia or Ukraine on Wednesday 17 July, while France – favoutites after their recent win over England Academy – will face the winner of Scotland and USA, as they bid to regain the title which they won in 2018.

The two losing quarter-finalists will meet in the 5th vs 6th place play-off game.

The final day of competition takes place on Saturday 20 July, with the championship final while the other teams who have not yet met will play in grading games for the 2026 tournament.

“We’re very excited for kick off on Sunday,” said ERL general manager David Butler.

“As well as producing some very competitive and entertaining rugby league, the 2022 tournament in Italy also created a sense of friendship and camaraderie between the competing teams and I’m sure that we will see both in good measure this time around in Belgrade.

The Serbia Rugby League Federation has worked very hard on the ground to prepare for the tournament, and I am sure that everyone competing is going to enjoy their hospitality.”

USA Young Hawks make their debut at this level with the bulk of their squad coming from the Utah area which is the first to inaugurate domestic youth competition, while Pheonix Death (Mona Vale Raiders) and Ryan Jurkans (Singleton Greyhounds) travel from Australia to represent Ukraine, and Hayden Cumming (Mackay Magpies) and Bailey Schneider (Manly Sea Eagles) will play for Scotland.

2024 European U19s Championship Adds Transatlantic Flavour

USA‘s Young Hawks will make their debut in the 2024 European Rugby League U19s Championship which will be staged in Belgrade, Serbia, with games to be played on Sunday 14, Wednesday 17 and Saturday 20 July.

Six nations will compete the others being, holders England who won the tournament in 2022 in Lignano Sabbiadoro, Italy; France the inaugural winners in 2018 when the competition was also staged in Belgrade; Scotland, Ukraine and Serbia.

In the opening round of matches, Serbia will face Ukraine and Scotland will meet USA.

The winners will face England and France in the semi-finals with the two losers meeting to determine the 5th/6th placing, which may be used to determine future qualifiers for the next tournament in 2026.

The losing semi-finalists will meet the team that they have not played, also in a grading game.

Newly appointed USARL chair, Matt Goschnick, commented: “None of this would have been possible without the relentless dedication, passion, and support of our volunteers which enabled us to establish the USA Youth National Programme.

“Sending the inaugural USA U19 Youth team to the European Championship is a pivotal milestone and an investment in our sport’s long-term future.

This initiative provides opportunities and pathways for our youth participants to develop and grow, and our inclusion in the event will only strengthen our domestic competitions.”

Goschnick added: “The selection process for the touring team drew significant interest, with over 50 players participating in try outs.

This marks the first time in our history that a clear pathway has been established for our junior participants to represent their country, demonstrating our commitment to creating opportunities for those involved in the sport.

The European Championship will be a valuable test in the early stages of our development model, and an experience many players haven’t had, regardless of the results.”

Additionally, England will face a Serbia U21s team on the first day of competition to help expose the Serbs to more international games, and European Rugby League will run a week-long camp for an eight-person match officials squad which will contain representatives from across the continent.

ERL will also lead training courses for coaches and MOs in the region thanks to investment from the Belgrade municipality into the event. It is also expected that the various embassies will engage with their teams during their time in Belgrade.

ERL general manager, David Butler, said: “We’re very grateful to the Serbian Rugby League Federation for putting together such a comprehensive package for the 2024 European Rugby League U19s Championship and we’re delighted that the event will be returning to Belgrade.

“The last one proved to be a true celebration of rugby league and created a respect and friendship between the competing nations that I am sure will continue.

We’re very pleased to be welcoming the USA to their first youth competition and are glad that despite all the challenges they face, Ukraine remain committed to the tournament.

“It is also encouraging to see that already this year Czechia and Norway have played U19s internationals and Ireland and Wales continue to operate age-grade teams at this level, and we look forward to hopefully welcoming them to future editions of the Championship.”
