Roosters snatch back-to-back titles in SG Ball Cup thriller

The Sydney Roosters have overcome an 18-point deficit to claim back-to-back UNE SG Ball Cup premierships.

The Knights wasted no time getting tries on the board, as they found themselves 12-points in front early.

The Knights spine carried them through the first half, giving them to the upper hand heading into the sheds at halftime 24-10.

It was a comeback for the ages, with the Sydney Roosters producing three unanswered tries in the second half to claim the UNE SG Ball Cup for a second consecutive year under coach Boyd Cordner.

“That is what champion teams do. No matter what happens, they stand up,” Cordner said post-game.

The Knights were quick to act, scoring their first points just three minutes into the contest.

Two quick runs from dummy half saw them straighten up their attack, gaining promising field position before a pass to prop Beau Hill saw him power over the try-line. A successful conversion from Callum Elsley saw the Knights with an early 6-0 lead.

Just minutes later, the Knights found themselves in again just metres from their own try-line, as their ruck speed proved too quick for the Roosters.

An eyes up play saw the ball batted down by the Roosters before Knights halfback Chase Butler cleaned it up to score.

Elsley added the extra’s as the Knights found themselves two converted tries ahead.

The Roosters answered back through their trusted fullback Rex Bassingthwaighte.

Trying to crack the Newcastle defensive line in repeat sets, the ball found its way into the hands of Bassigthwaighte who wrestled with the Knights defenders to get the ball down.

Converting his own try, the Roosters trailed 12-6.

The Knights extended their lead after an impressive kick pressure display.

On the last play, the Roosters went to send the ball sky-high before it ricocheted off the Knights to bounce its way back towards their try-line, as Butler regained the ball and ran it over the line to score his first-half double.

Another successful conversion extended the Knights lead, 18-6.

It was all class from the Knights towards the end of the first half as they piled pressure on the Roosters with repeat sets in attack.

Passing and tipping the ball out to the wing, it landed in the hands of the competitions leading try scorer Melchizedek Nonu who found his 18th try of the season.

Elsley converted from the sideline taking the Knights to a 24-6 lead.

The Roosters managed to decrease the deficit with just over three minutes remaining in the first half.

Another push through their left edge saw centre Brooklyn Heath power over the line to score the very important try to keep the Roosters in touch, as they ended the half behind 24-10.

An error to start the second half from the Knights saw the Roosters with an early opportunity.

Caleb Fesolai placed a well-timed pass just metres out from the try line to Cooper Gibbs, who ran a hard and direct line to snatch the first points of the second half.

A successful conversion saw the Roosters back in the game, 24-16.

The Roosters climbed their way back up the score board after a clutch line break from centre Bastion Armstrong, seeing him run straight up the middle of the field.

To his right was Bassingthwaighte, who received the pass to run away with his second try.

Another successful conversion saw the Roosters turn this Grand Final into a two-point ball game.

With 13 minutes left in the Grand Final, the Roosters took the lead for the first time.

Bassingwaighte, who had been at the heart of the Roosters comeback, found a gap as he slipped inside to make a break up-field.

Finding his halfback Zaylen Ekepati on his inside, the Roosters were just metres away from their line as a quick tip-on made its way to the hands of James Finegan to score.

Bassingwaighte converted the try and the Roosters took a 28-24 lead that they defended for the remainder of the Grand Final to take home the UNE SG Ball Cup in back-to-back years.

“These guys are our future,” Cordner said.

“We have such a great group of young men that just want to work hard, and I have been blessed with such a good group of players.

“I am very proud, very happy and I can’t wait for more.”

Two clubs feature in every Junior Reps final

Two clubs – Parramatta Eels and Sydney Roosters – are enjoying great success in the NSWRL Junior Representatives this year with teams making finals in all four competitions.

PALADIN – We know rugby league

Six True Blues – Vanessa Foliaki (Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, Westpac Lisa Fiaola U17s Girls), Keeley Davis (Sydney Roosters, Westpac Tarsha Gale Cup U19s Women).

Corban Baxter (with Davis), Isabelle Kelly (Central Coast Roosters, Lisa Fiaola Cup), Andrew Fifita (Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks, Tarsha Gale Cup) and Boyd Cordner (Sydney Roosters, UNE SG Ball Cup U19s Men) – have coached sides through to the finals in 2025.

It is also the first time Melbourne Storm have made a Junior Reps finals match.

The Eels finished top of the ladder after nine rounds undefeated in UNE SG Ball Cup (Under 19s Men), eighth in UNE Harold Matthews Cup (Under 17s Boys), fifth in Westpac Tarsha Gale Cup, and third in Westpac Lisa Fiaola Cup. The Sydney Roosters ‘family’ includes the Central Coast Roosters and the Indigenous Academy Roosters. The Sydney Roosters finished fourth in SG Ball, Central Coast finished second in both Harold Matthews and Lisa Fiaola Cup, and the Indigenous Academy was seventh in Tarsha Gale Cup.

All four Junior Reps feature a top-eight finals format across four weeks starting with Qualifying and Elimination Finals in Week One this Saturday and Sunday (11-12 April).

“Parramatta didn’t make the Under 17s Boys finals or Under 19s Women’s last year, so they had a real look at their pathways,” NSWRL Head of Competitions Yvette Downey said.

“They shuffled things around, made a few new staff appointments and it’s paid off. It’s a credit to Jamie Shephard, who is Head of Pathways, and the work he’s done.

“The Roosters have also done incredible work over the season to maintain their high standards and consistency.”

Westpac NSW Blues Women’s coach John Strange is Head of Female Pathways at the Roosters with James Hanson as Operations manager for both male and female pathways. Steve Deakin is the Head of the Central Coast Academy.

“The Storm also needs to be recognised for the work they are doing as it’s the first time they’ve made a finals series of Junior Reps,” Downey said.

“They have been around for several years but they were run by Victoria Rugby League and were known as the Thunderbolts and then the VRL Storm.

“But last year Melbourne Storm took over the pathways and they should be congratulated for that investment.”

Other highlights after nine rounds are:

Raiders have made the Lisa Fiaola Cup finals in their inaugural season and Fiaola is the club’s Well-Being and Education Manager.
Penrith Panthers have teams in both the Tarsha Gale Cup and Lisa Fiaola Cup without having a NRLW team.
There are three clubs trying to defend their 2024 premierships – Warriors in Harold Matthew Cup, Illawarra Steelers in Tarsha Gale Cup, and Canterbury-Bankstown

SG Ball finals six players to watch

Over the next three weekends the six top teams from the UNE SG Ball Cup will battle it out to see who survives for Grand Final day (29 April).

Here are six players from the top-six finalists, who could play a decisive role in getting their team to the 2023 season decider.

1. Canberra Raiders – Sam Gash, fullback-wing

The Raiders came through the season with the perfect home record (4-0) and only lost one away game to the Illawarra Steelers.

They top-tailed their year conceding no points in Round One (Melbourne Storm 66-0) or in Round Nine (Balmain Tigers 28-0).

Scoring 58 tries over nine games gave them an average of six tries per game, with two players who shared the No.1 position – Chevy Stewart and Sam Gash – scoring 11 of those between them.

Gash also kicked 30 goals. Hooker Owen Pattie scored six tries and was one of the driving forces in the Raiders having the best defensive record in the competition.

2. Penrith Panthers – Luron Patea, prop

Like the Raiders, the Panthers were the only other side to lose just once (Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles 26-24) during the nine rounds, which set a solid foundation for their 2022 premiership defence.

Half Riley Pollard kept the Panthers scoreboard ticking over with 33 goals alongside his four tries, but one of the real stars was prop Luron Patea scoring tries in six of the nine matches – twice with a double – for eight in total.

3. Newcastle Knights – Ethan Ferguson, centre

The Knights had another top-three finish in 2023.

They had six wins but were undefeated in eight matches, if you add in the two draws with Western Suburbs Magpies (32-all) and the Sydney Roosters (36-all).

Their only loss for the year was the Panthers (Round Two).

Fletcher Sharpe scored a try in the Knights’ Jersey Flegg Cup Grand Final in 2022 and is back in the No.1 jersey for the club’s 2023 SG Ball side where he has scored 12 tries including two hat-tricks.

Centre Ethan Ferguson not only matched him for tries but with also scored 82 points from the boot (42 goals).

4. Parramatta Eels – Ethan Sanders, halfback

The Eels worked hard to turn around their eleventh-placed finish in 2022 to fourth this year.

They mustered seven wins – four straight off the bat (Rounds 1-4).

Points were evenly shared among the players, but when Ethan Sanders took over the goalkicking from Joshua Lynn in Round Three he accelerated the Eels scoreboard with 25 goals and three tries over six weeks.

A standout over the first five rounds was winger Cody Parry, who scored 10 tries, but he was well supported by hooker Matthew Arthur crossing four times in the opening four games.

5. Western Suburbs Magpies – Tallyn Da Silver, hooker

Another in the big-improver stakes was the Magpies rocketing up from 12th last year to play finals 12 months on.

They scored over 100 points (108) in their opening three games, while conceding 32.

Hooker Tallyn Da Silva (pictured above) was on the score sheet in eight of the nine matches, after scoring nine tries, while five-eighth Lachlan Gavin tallied eight.

Second rower Zakauri Clarke not only landed 32 goals, but also scored four tries.

6. Sydney Roosters – Cassius Tia, five-eighth

The Roosters finished on top of the table in 2022, only to lose a close Grand Final (22-20) to the Panthers.

They meant business in 2023 registering the best attack (380 points) after scoring more than 45 points in five of their nine matches.

Two draws (24-all Illawarra, 36-all Newcastle) kept them down the ladder, as wins in both of those games would have put them at No.1 due to their superior for-and-against.

Winger Kade Maguire certainly helped in attack with 11 tries, but halves Haydan Ritchie and Cassius Tia were a dynamite partnership after scoring 12 tries between them.

Tia took over the goal-kicking duties in Round Three and booted 45 from seven games.

Head coach Adam Blair has adjusted his halves combination for the One New Zealand Warriors’ sixth-round SG Ball Cup encounter with the Sydney Roosters at the Trusts Arena in Waitakere on Sunday (1.00pm kick-off).

In an otherwise unchanged side, he has called up De La Salle College product Phranklyn Mano-le-Mamea for his debut.

Mano-le-Mamea, who was 18th man last week, comes in at standoff with William Piliu moving to the bench after starting in the #6 jersey in each of the team’s first four matches.

After winning their first three matches, the One New Zealand Warriors suffered a reverse last Sunday when they fell to an 18-40 defeat to Newcastle after holding a 12-10 lead at the 23-minute mark.

ROUND 6 – SUNDAY 12TH MARCH

Despite the result the One New Zealand Warriors remain sixth on the ladder with a game in hand; one side – Canberra – is unbeaten after five rounds.

The Roosters, coming off an emphatic 46-4 win over the Wests Tigers, are eighth with two wins, a draw and two losses in their five matches so far.

SG Ball Cup

The Raiders SG Ball side continued their strong start to the season with a 38-28 win over the Sydney Roosters at Henson Park on Saturday.

The Raiders lead 32-6 at half-time before the Roosters staged a second half comeback, but it wasn’t enough as the Raiders held on for victory.

It was a fast start from the visitors, with tries to Jacob Iosefa, Owen Pattie and Samuel Gash giving the Raiders an 18-0 lead after 15 minutes of play.

The Roosters hit back with a try but the Raiders were able to bounce straight back with a try to halfback Jalen Afamasaga.

Iosefa then got his second try of the day for the Raiders, before fullback Chevy Stewart scored just before half-time to give his side a 32-6 lead at the break.

The Raiders started the second half right where they left off, with second rower Noah Martin scoring and Samuel Gash successfully converting to give the green machine a 38-6 lead.

From there it was all the Roosters, with the home side running in four straight tries to get within 10 points of the Raiders.

The Raiders travel to 4 Pines Park in Sydney next weekend to take on the Sea Eagles.

Harold Matthews Cup

The Raiders Harold Matthews team notched up their second straight win after defeating the Sydney Roosters 34-12 at Henson Park on Saturday.

Three unanswered tries in the second half sealed the victory for the Raiders, who were impressive throughout.

The Raiders had the perfect start to the game with front rower Jesse Milin scoring in the opening minute.

Both sides then went on to exchange tries for the rest of the first half, with the Raiders going into the half-time break leading 18-12.

Brock Apolevski opened the scoring in the second half for the Raiders, with Braydan Darmody converting to give Canberra a 24-12 lead.

Raiders halfback Jonah Anderson scored next, with Samuel Griffin scoring the final try of the day for the visitors.

The Raiders take on the Sea Eagles in Sydney in round three next weekend.

The Raiders Tarsha Gale Cup side went down to the Indigenous Academy Roosters 38-6 in the opening clash of their season.

Raiders lock Aaliyah Lomas scored a consolation try in the final minute of the game, with winger Mya McGlynn successfully converting.

The Raiders will look to bounce back against the Sea Eagles next weekend at 4 Pines Park in Sydney.

Sydney Roosters Awards Night Caps Off Successful Year for Junior Representatives

The Sydney Roosters Junior Representative sides have capped off arguably the best season in the Club’s long-standing history with a successful 2022 Awards Night.

Players, staff, friends, family and guest speakers were present at Easts Leagues in Bondi Junction on Monday night to celebrate the Harold Matthews Cup (Mens under 17s), Tarsha Gale Cup (Womens under 18s) and SG Ball Cup (Mens under 19s) seasons.

All three teams enjoyed exceptional results, which included:

The Harold Matthews Cup side finishing the regular season in second place – their best ever result in Club history – and falling just short of a Grand Final berth.

The SG Ball Cup side claiming the Minor Premiership and qualifying for their first Grand Final since 2014.

The Tarsha Gale Cup side winning both the Minor Premiership and inaugural Premiership in an outstanding season that saw them go through undefeated.

2022 Junior Representative Awards Night

General Manager of Football Programs Craig Walker was thrilled with the Junior Representative side’s results through the year as well as the large turnout for the presentations in what was a fitting finale for everyone involved.

“It was a great night to celebrate one of the best in the Club’s history,” he said.

“It was not only great to celebrate the season that we had but to see some special guests including some of the NRLW players as well as Mitchell Aubusson and Jake Friend who spoke about their pathways experience both as players and coaches.

“We also presented our staff member of the year award, all the coaches spoke and a number of the parents were there in what was a high attendance.

“Blake Cavallaro did an exceptional job at organising the night and we had a high turnout of players and families.

“The award winners were all very gracious and spoke very well. It was a great way to cap off the year that was.”

Panthers produce thrilling comeback to win SG Ball title

Penrith Panthers have clawed back from a 20-0 half-time deficit to beat the Sydney Roosters 22-20, claiming the SG Ball Cup Grand Final at CommBank Stadium on Saturday.

With scores locked at 20-all with two minutes remaining, Keagan Russell-Smith landed a conversion from the sideline to give his side a memorable come-from-behind victory.

The Roosters asserted their dominance early, scoring four tries in the opening half as the Panthers battled to stay alive.

But a second-half double to Jesse McLean and tries to captain Mason Teague andwould afford the Panthers an opportunity to claim the title.

Russell-Smith kicked three from four conversions, while a man-of-the-match performance from Isaiya Katoa sealed the Panthers’ ninth SG Ball Cup premiership.

The Roosters were first to open their account off a cut-out pass from halfback Cassius Tia, which found Xavier Chatfield-Mooka unmarked on the wing.

But the conversion from touch proved too difficult for fullback Benjamin Dufficy, keeping Sydney’s lead at four points.

Three minutes later the Roosters extended their advantage through Dufficy, after he received an offload from centre Robert Toia which put him in the clear.

This time Dufficy slotted the conversion from in-front, kicking the Roosters to a 10-point lead.

Six minutes later the Roosters claimed another try after Tia dodged and weaved his way through a collection of Panthers before putting the ball down on the line.

Dufficy had no luck with the conversion but the Roosters maintained a 14-point advantage.

A barnstorming run from Tia gave the tri-colours another chance to score, as Benaiah Ioelu scooped the ball up from dummy half catching the Panthers off-guard before diving over the line.

Dufficy added the extras from close range to put the Roosters ahead 20-0.

A few late efforts from the Panthers saw them creep within try-scoring range, but a dropped ball on the put down by Isaiya Katoa halted the Panthers chances of getting on the board before the break.

Half-Time: Panthers 0 – 20 Roosters

The Panthers were first to strike in the second half after a 15-minute stalemate.

A strong run from Hotere-Papalii drew in the defenders before offloading to McLean on the wing, who had a wealth of work to do to get the ball down.

McLean barrelled through the Roosters defence in the corner to ground the ball, but Keagan Russell-Smith failed to convert from touch.

Building momentum, Katoa created an opportunity for Panthers captain Mason Teague to draw back the deficit, sending him through a gap in the Roosters line to score under the posts.

Russell-Smith made no mistake with the conversion, bringing the lead within 10-points.

Capitalising on the tiring Sydney defence, the Panthers would rein in two tries in seven minutes on the left edge.

A quick ball from Harrison Hassett connected with Hotere-Papalii to send him through the defence to put the ball down on the line. Russell-Smith made the conversion look easy, bringing the premiership within four points.

Crisp passing down the left side put McLean over in the corner once more, equaling the scores with four minutes left of play.

Russell-Smith slotted the vital goal, giving the Panthers a 22-20 victory.

Panthers stage stunning fightback to claim SG Ball Cup premiership

Penrith Panthers have staged a stunning comeback to beat the Sydney Roosters 22-20 in the SG Ball Cup Grand Final at CommBank Stadium today.

The Panthers were 20-0 down at half-time after a strong first half by the Roosters but rallied on the back of a Player of the Match performance from halfback Isaiya Katoa.

The match went down to the wire with Panthers five-eighth Keagan Russell-Smith only sealing the win after landing a difficult conversion from the sideline.

I’ve always dreamt of that as a kid

“I’ve always dreamt of that as a kid; being in a Grand Final and kick a goal from the sideline,” Russell-Smith said.

“As much as the nerves were kicking in, I felt calm, just trusted in myself and knew the boys would back me.

“Once the ball sailed over it was a great feeling and something I’ll never forget.”

The Roosters boasted the best defence in the competition after conceding only 60 points all season while the Panthers attack had been on song in 2021 after being one of only two teams to score more than 200 points.

Tricolours winger Xavier Chatfield-Mooka

Tricolours winger Xavier Chatfield-Mooka had been strong all season, scoring at least one try in six matches.

He continued that good form when he was on the receiving end of a cut-out pass from halfback Cassius Tia to score the opening try of the match.

The Roosters backed up that play with an even more impressive long-range effort when five-eighth Ethan Strange put Robert Toia into a gap.

The Roosters centre then turned a ball back inside for fullback Benjamin Dufficy to score underneath the posts.

Dufficy then converted his own try and the Tricolours were well on top at 10-0.

The Roosters kept the pressure on when back-rower Michael Abdow managed to slip a nice offload for Tia.

The Roosters halfback then showed plenty of guile to step his way back inside the defence and over the line to extend the lead to 14-0.

Roosters skipper and lock Joshua Wong then made a strong run up the middle which replacement hooker Benaiah Ioelu capitalised on after burrowing his way over the line from dummy-half on the next play.

Ioelu then came up with another big play at the other end of the field after doing just enough to cause Panthers halfback Isaiya Katoa to lose control of the ball when he looked certain to score.

It wouldn’t be the only chance the Panthers would miss out on in the first half after winger Jesse McLean was chased down and tackled by Abdow.

Losing control of the ball in the process to let the Roosters off the hook and leave them with a 20-0 lead at half-time.

It was a different Penrith outfit which emerged after the break, with the mistakes that had dogged them in the first half being replaced by the type of play that had swept them into the Grand Final.

The Panthers started the long road back with a sweeping backline movement that ended with McLean barging his way over in the corner to reduce the margin to 20-4.

Katoa then held a pass up nicely for Panthers captain and lock Mason Teague to charge through a gap and over the top of Dufficy to score.

Five-eighth Keagan Russell-Smith converted and the Panthers were back in it at 20-10.

Panthers centre Angelis Hotare-Papalii helped reduce the margin to 20-16 when he stretched out to score and then showed great skill to suck in two defenders before popping a pass for McLean to grab his second try of the afternoon.

Russell-Smith stepped up to coolly slot the conversion from the sideline to complete a remarkable fightback.

“It’s been a journey all year; the hard work and you live for those moments,” Russell-Smith said.

“It’s unreal, it’s hard to put into words because it’s just such a great feeling.

It’s just an unreal feeling to come away with that, especially being down. The boys were a bit rattled, but we knew if we stuck to what we could do we would come out on top.”

Around the Grounds Junior Representative Semi-finals

The NSWRL’s Junior Representative Grand Finalists have now been decided with the Magpies v Sharks in the Harold Matthews Cup, Roosters v Knights in the Harvey Norman Tarsha Gale Cup and Roosters v Panthers in the SG Ball Cup, taking place next Saturday at CommBank Stadium.

Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks have handed Sydney Roosters just their second loss of 2022 to book their spot in the 2022 Harold Matthews Cup Grand Final after a hard-fought 14-12 victory.

It was a dream start for the fourth-placed Sharks when they found themselves attacking the Roosters line after just two minutes. The right-edge combination of Bryce Sait and Joshua Sidoti opened the Sharks account and they took an early 4-0 lead.

With the Roosters leading the competition in attack and the Sharks in defence, both sides got into the arm wrestle until the Roosters finally cracked the Cronulla wall through centre Cooper Toy.

The Sharks would run in two more tries to captain Chevy Stewart and Jay McLaughlin, giving them a handy 14-6 lead.

With the Sharks proving tough to crack, it took some individual brilliance from Jaxson Allen and Zac Sarfati to put them within striking distance.

It was Toby Rodwell who capitalised on the very next play and once Lachlan Dooner converted, the Roosters trailed 14-12 with 17 minutes remaining.

It was a monumental effort from the Sharks to hold on, especially after Alex McFadden was sent to the bin in the first half and arguably their biggest strike weapon Chevy Stewart followed suit in the second half.

Despite the Roosters throwing everything at them, the Sharks managed to hold on for an incredible 14-12 win and a chance at Premiership glory next Saturday at CommBank Stadium.

Roosters continue winning ways

Sydney Roosters have defeated Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs 32-12 to secure their spot in the 2022 SG Ball Cup Grand Final.

The tricolours came into the game undefeated and with the best defence in the competition, leaving the Bulldogs with a tough challenge.

While the Bulldogs were able to go set-for-set with the Roosters for the opening 20 minutes, the tricolours finally broke the deadlock when five-eighth Ethan Strange split the defence in two and found Kyron Fekitoa supporting on his outside.

As the Roosters forwards started to lay a great platform, Benjamin Dufficy grubbered the ball through and unfortunately for the Dogs, the ball bounced off the goalpost and into the hands of Cassius Tia who scored the Roosters second try.

The Bulldogs hit back through Lajaun Vito who dived on a loose ball to get his side to 10-4 heading into the sheds at halftime.

It was a second-half blitz from the Chooks as Siaosi Kaliti and Strange bagged a double and Xavier Chatfield-Mooka crashed over for a four-pointer.

While the Dogs would keep their account ticking over through a try to Jarvis Leafa, the Roosters showed why they have been the competition benchmark throughout the 2022 season.

Roosters too strong for valiant Tigers

After losing last year’s Grand Final, Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy have given themselves a chance at redemption after defeating Wests Tigers 22-8 to book a spot in the Harvey Norman Tarsha Gale Cup Grand Final.

It was some individual brilliance from Losana Lutu that broke a Roosters defence that had only conceded 34 points throughout the 2022 season. Imogen Gobran converted to put the Tigers up 6-0 after just seven minutes.

Roosters fullback Jada Taylor has been terrorising defences all year and today was no different. With her side trailing, Taylor hit the ball at speed down the left-hand side of the field, putting on a nice left-foot step to beat the fullback and score under the sticks.

With the Tigers leading 8-6 at halftime, the Roosters forwards came out of the sheds firing and Kalosipani Hopoate spurred her team on when she carried several defenders over the line to put the Roosters up 10-8.

After Otesa Pule was held up over the line, the Roosters would not be denied and the very next play Taylor put Zoe Cass over in the corner with a brilliant ball.

Their third try in quick succession came off the back of a great run from centre Elizabeth Lomu-Stewart to put the Chooks deep inside Tigers territory.

They quickly spread the ball to the left and eventually stripped the Tigers for numbers when Ally Bullman scored in the left corner.

From there, the Tigers simply couldn’t stop the onslaught of the Roosters attack as they marched up field and Taylor pulled off arguably the play of the game.

Lingering on the right edge, Taylor put a deft grubber kick through and got a dream bounce crashing over to secure a 22-8 win for her side.
