France, England and Wales pick up wins in opening round of European U19s Championships

England, France and Wales made impressive starts to the U19s European Championship in the first round of matches held at the CREPS Font Romeu high performance facility in the French Pyrenees yesterday (Sunday).

Full back Eligh Wilkinson scored a first half hat trick and landed seven goals as holders England defeated Ukraine 70-8, Rio Walker and Zac Bennett each with two of their total of 14 tries. England head coach, Gary Hewer, commented:

“The boys have responded really well to the hot conditions and given a thorough performance against a very resilient Ukraine side who never stopped for the full 80 minutes.

“From a coaching point of view, it’s disappointing to concede a try but the effort and determination that the Ukrainians put in, and with the friendship and bonds we’ve created over the last four or five years, they deserved it.”

Hewer added: “We’ll utilise the whole squad over our group games but some of them put their hands up today showing what they can offer.”

Hooker Cruz Death claimed Ukraine’s late try, head coach Artur Martyrisian, noted: “It was a good experience for our team. We have not had a lot of time to train together and set aside our domestic championship because so many players are in the army.

“Great thanks to our heritage players because, without them, we might not have been able to participate.”

Leny Stacul was the French star with four tries as they beat Scotland 96-6. The host nation crossed 16 times in all, back rower Adrian De La Rose with a try treble, Thibault Guttierez kicking a perfect 15 conversions.

Scotland were reduced to 12 men in the 36th minute following a sending off.

In the third match, Wales held on to deny Serbia 52-30, Regan Preece with three tries and Kevan Phillips claiming 24 points from two tries and eight out of nine goals.

Wales head coach, Gary Dunn said of the victory: “I was pleased with the result more than the performance, there are loads of aspects to improve on.

“There were some good individual tries, and I can’t fault any of the effort, but we need to analyse this before we face England on Wednesday, Serbia were a little unknown to us.”

Serbia had three players sinbinned, scrum half Tyson Walker with two of their tries and a total of 18 points.

“I’m proud of the boys, both domestic and heritage players,” noted head coach Vladislav Dedic.

“We had to rally dig deep against a good side. The sinbins harmed us but when it was 13 on 13, we were the better side. We need to work on our discipline.”

England and Wales will meet in Neath in a fortnight to decide the U16s Four Nations title after both convincingly won their round two games.

England dominated from the off, building a 40-0 half time lead against Ireland in Widnes, fullback Jack Bowden finishing with 18 points from two tries and five goals.

Centre Jonah Carter claimed a hat trick, and Billy Buster-Knight and Jaiden Udbegbe were also on the scoresheet again, fellow try scorer Ryan Cunliffe also impressing in the pack.

Ireland showed commendable courage to open the scoring in the second half, centre Joe Clarke converting his own score.

Wales also started impressively, establishing a 22-point early lead facing Scotland in Merthyr Tydfil and they also led 40-0 at the break. Winger Alfie Davies opened the scoring and finished with three of Wales’s 13 tries, Jack Parrott claiming 16 points, including six goals.

Centre Max Phillips grabbed a brace in the first half and lively scrum half Will Mordecai did likewise in the second.

The game spilled over just before the hour, Danny Jones – who had scored minutes before – being dismissed for striking and Scotland’s Lachlan McKelvey sinbinned for his part in the fray.

Scotland received a penalty after the incident and Reece McAdam kicked it from long range to ensure they had points on the board.

In the U17s friendly international also at Merthyr, a fine second half performance by Wales saw them home 50-28 against Scotland.

The hosts were 20-18 ahead at the end of a tightly fought first half, each side fielding eleven debutants, but two tries in three minutes on the re-start from centre Evan Benjamin, and a further one from Matthew Clatworthy with his second and 20 points, saw Wales home.

Benjamin completed a second half hat trick, hooker Zach Robbins with a first half brace for Wales including opening the scoring.

Declan Smith and Ollie Watkins-Smith’s touchdowns and two Tom Glover goals saw Scotland hit back to lead, Joseph Davies and Finlay Stamford also crossing for the visitors.

An Elliot Williams try and Benjamin goal bringing up the half century for the young Welsh.

European rugby league u19s championship format and fixtures announced

European Rugby League has confirmed the format and fixtures for the biennial U19s European Championship which will take place at the CREPS Font Romeu high performance facility in the Pyrenees, France in July.

A record ten nations will participate, split into two competitions.

The Championship will be contested by England, France, Scotland, Serbia, Ukraine and Wales – the five participants from the 2024 event in Belgrade and Wales who were the next best performing side in the 2022 event having missed the most recent tournament.

Canada together with Greece, Ireland, and Norway, who are all either new or returning after an absence from the tournament, will do battle for the European Shield, with the winner guaranteed promotion to the 2028 event.

Subject to the number of nations applying for that, there may be relegation from this season’s Championship.

“Having ten nations competing has been challenging in terms of formatting and logistics, but it has been a great problem to have, and I’m delighted to see the tournament continuing to grow,” commented ERL chair Dean Andrew.

In the Championship, the nations have been drawn into two groups of three based on results from the previous tournament.

England, as defending champions

England, as defending champions, are the first seed and are joined by Scotland (3) and Serbia (5) in Pool A. Hosts France are in Pool B as the second seed, with Ukraine (4) and Wales (6).

Each will play the three nations in the opposite group, with results merged into one league table and the first placed team awarded the Championship title. The Shield will see each nation play the other once, and the side which leads the league table on conclusion will take the trophy.

The matches will be played over three days, five per day, at the state-of-the-art sporting facility which will also see the squads stay on site.

The hosts open their campaign on Sunday 12 July against Scotland in a repeat of 2024’s feisty semi-final, whilst England face Ukraine in another semi-final repeat and Wales take on Serbia.

Round two

Round two on Wednesday 15 July sees England taking on Wales, Scotland face Ukraine and France do battle with Serbia.

The final round on Saturday 18 July, will see Serbia take on Ukraine and Scotland will be seeking to overturn Wales after losing recent clashes.

The final match will see France take on England in what could be a tournament decider, the previous three encounters between them having a margin of less than seven points.

In Pool B, on day one, Greece will make their debut against Ireland, while Norway come up against Canada, before Greece meet Canada in round two as Norway face Ireland. The final day will see Norway and Greece open the proceedings before Canada and Ireland do battle.

Andrew added: “Several of the nations have told me how important the tournament has been to both inspiring its youth players to work hard and achieve selection, but also to their player pathways into their senior teams.

“Thanks to early organisation by the French Rugby League Federation, we’ve been able to work further in advance to give them all greater preparation time than they have experienced in previous years and I’m very much looking forward to seeing the fruits of that on the field.”

Wales women beat Scotland

Match report

A superb solo try, by player of the match Wales women skipper Beth Dainton two minutes from time, saw her side home 18-12 against Scotland women at the Lextan Knoll, Neath in a thriller.

A penalty from Sarah Smart in the 67th minute gave the Scots, superbly led by Kaiya Glynn and Charlotte Hill, a share of the spoils on their international debut but Dainton.

Who was ably supported by Charlie Munday and Agnes Wood off the bench – saw the hosts home before an enthusiastic Celtic crowd.

Scotland dominated the opening exchanges territoriality and prop Grace Field made history by becoming their first-ever try scorer, pouncing on a Demi Fisher grubber that bounced off a post protector, Sarah Smart goaling.

Dainton’s purposeful runs and Amberley Ruck’s distribution got Wales back into the game and they posted three unconverted tries.

Lucia Davies sent over in the right hand corner, Kathryn Salter – who missed all three conversions – on the left after another Dainton break, and St Helens winger Danni McGifford sliding over after out wide.

Debutant Olivia Williams had gone close.

Just before the break, another Fished chip kick caused havoc, Sarah Smart gathering on the full, her conversion attempt going across the face of the posts to leave it 12-10 at the break.

The second half was end-to-end with some impressive scrambling defence from both sides but without a by-product.

Sarah Smart levelling when Wales were deemed to have taken out a dummy runner.

But Dainton’s smash-and-grab effort – after Amy Price had been held up – saw Wales home, as they prepare to face England at the same venue next week.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game, we play against and alongside a lot of them week-in, week-out,” said Dainton.

“Those are the games we want, we don’t want easy ones. We came out firing at the start of the second half but couldn’t take our opportunities, but we’ve come a really long way since playing England last year and I’m happy with that.”

Bitterly disappointed Scotland women’s head coach John Whalley was immensely proud of his charges on their debut.

“I thought we did enough at times to win it,” he noted.

“To come off the back of four sessions and almost do it, it’s a building block, we’ve got a pathway in place and the future’s definitely bright.

We look forward to preparing for facing Jamaica next and will be ready.”

Wales and England Community Lions emerged triumphant in the U16s and U18s Four Nations competitions respectively.

For Wales it was the third time in succession they have won the U16s title, beating England 18-0 in the deciding game at Halton Farnworth Hornets.

The margin of defeat meant that Ireland clinched second spot on points’ difference in the closest competition to date since the annual tournament was introduced in 2023.

“The players have worked very hard for six months to get to this point” noted Wales head coach Paul Berry.

“In the decider we were very good in the first twenty minutes before it became a scrappy game in the heat, but that’s the sign of a champion team that you can still come up with the win.”

A domestic quota was put in place and exceeded in all games with at least six home-produced players being involved in the matchday squads, demonstrating progression in all of the countries and a reduction in the reliance on heritage players.

Biennial U18s tournament

The biennial U18s tournament, which alternates with the European U19s championship, saw England go through undefeated.

“We saved our best performance to the end for the winner takes all game against Wales, keeping them to zero,” commented England coach, Gary Hewer.

England and Wales are more dominant at this age group owing to more developed domestic competition, but again the domestic quota was exceeded by all four nations.

“It is fantastic to see the U16s and U18s Four Nations Competitions continuing to flourish and improve in standard,” said IRL head of membership and competitions, David Butler.

“This year’s competitions have raised the bar in terms of standard and awareness, with all sides focussing their efforts on promoting the fixtures and increasing the coverage and we’ve seen some very healthy attendances at games.

We will review collectively over the next couple of months and start the planning again for next year.”

USA and Scotland win ranking matches at u19s Euros

In the two ranking games to complete the European U19s Championship in Belgrade, unlimited substitutions ensured that all squad members were given a run and to help counter the week’s considerable heat.

A hat trick try from USA centre Siaosi Koloamatangi two minutes from time ensured a 26-22 win over determined Ukraine, the conditions cooler after morning rain.

“We came here not knowing what to expect or how our boys would go but to win two of our three games is very pleasing,” said USA Young Hawks head coach, George Tupou.

This was a tough game

“This was a tough game but we managed to win it and this brings us a lot of attention and a hopefully a wider pool of talent, it’s getting our name out there.”

Ukraine lost influential Ryan Jurkans, who was injured in a tackle after the game’s opening break away in the first minute but they opened the scoring when Ryslan Lipisii created the space for Arsen Havdo to burrow his way over.

Drayson Moliga returned a penalty kick that failed to find touch half-way to spectacularly dive between the posts, giving Lidarius Moananu an easy shot on goal to nose USA in front.

Koloamatangi latched onto a sublime offload to move USA further ahead and added his second three minutes later, Michael Fonua converting the first.

Ihor Yefanov stepped and dummied his way into the corner for Ukraine to keep them in touch, adding a superb conversion from the touchline to make it 16-10 at the interval.

In the 45th minute, Popeliuk Valerii angled his run to the posts, Yefanov levelling, and Andrii Mordovanets capitalised on a USA mix up at the back from a kick for Vitaliy Bycharskyi to add an easy conversion.

Isaac Fonua hit back for USA on the hour mark, diving into the corner from brother Michael’s pass, but Moananu was unable to convert. Koloamatangi had the final word, just latching onto a kick into the in goal to settle the outcome, giving Chris Malo an easy shot on goal.

Yefanov was sent off for disputing the decision, leaving Ukraine shorthanded for the final two sets of a superb game.

Ukraine U19s coach, Ihor Yurkin, commented: “It was a great game, we tried our best throughout and even though we lost this – and the whole tournament – has been a great experience for our boys.”

After the tournament formalities, the Ukraniain squad left on a two day bus journey back home.

Scotland proved to be too strong in their final match, defeating hosts Serbia 56-0 in a contest not without controversy.

Jacob Grierson crossed for Scotland’s second try in the 12th minute but was then sent off for punching.

Serbia’s Sasa O’Flynn dispatched to the sin bin for his part in the incident which was also placed on report – but the Scots took the setback in their stride.

“It was an impressive win for the boys,” said Scotland U19 coach Mark Milnes.

‘It was a really gritty victory and great to see a lot of young lads make their debuts.

We have a development programme in place and hopefully this is the start of something.”

Frazer Murray opened the scoring before Grierson dropped the ball over line prior to his try and red card and, with both sides a man down, Tom Gray and Harry Roper went over, Michael Myles perfect with the boot.

With Serbia restored to 13 men they showed more promise and pressure, camping out on Scotland’s line for several sets but couldn’t make it pay, Bailey Schneider extending Scotland’s lead.

Centre Murray posted his brace a minute into the second half and Jack Suddick found his way to the line ten minutes later, Oli Brady on successful kicking duties.

A powerful run from 40m out by prop Isaac Reid added further points just after the hour mark, Isaac Jepson crossing on the next set.

Scotland’s tenth try came from a long Hayden Cumming break, Maxwell Shelton backing up for the touchdown.

Serbia coaching consultant, Darren Fisher, said: “It’s been a great competition overall and for our boys it’s been a great learning curve.

It’s been good to see us put some structure in our game as the competition went on. We’re pretty pleased despite the results.”

England Community Lions U16s and U18s

England Community Lions have named extended train-on squads at Under-16s and Under-18s age groups as they prepare for a busy few months of internationals for both age groups.

The Under-16s have named 39 players, a number that will later be trimmed following a trial on 13th May and will take on Wales in Wales on 3rd June.

Before home internationals against Scotland (18th June), Ireland (2nd September) and Wales (16th September).

The players not selected from that trial game will still have a representative opportunity when a Lions Regional Selection take on a French Regional side in England during July.

23 clubs across the country are represented through the Under-16s programme this term.

European U19s Championship Format Confirmed

A new format has been confirmed for the European U19s Championship – which will be held at the Pasian Di Prato Stadium near Udine in Italy – following the withdrawal of Scotland.

Scotland Rugby League cited changes in their coaching staff and a lack of player availability at that age group as the reasons behind their decision not to travel.

Ukraine are still on schedule to compete despite all the difficulties in their country following the Russian invasion, with their kit now provided by manufacturers Canterbury and Hardgear.

They are, however, still looking to find the necessary funds to cover their costs, with a fundraising link still open for donations: fundraising campaign

Canberra Raiders forward Hudson Young, whose grandmother Valentina moved to Australia with her family after World War II and initially lived in a migrant camp at Greta, a small town near Newcastle where Young was born and raised, has added his support.

“For Ukraine to be able to play in that tournament would be a massive boost for them, considering what is going on over there,” he said.

“Giving kids the opportunity to play rugby league and having something to strive for, like the chance to play in a Word Cup, is going to drive them to keep going.”

The event is due to kick off on Saturday September 3 and the seven remaining nations – defending champions France, England, Ireland, Serbia, Ukraine, Wales and hosts Italy – will now face each other over 20-minute games on the opening day, after which a league table will be compiled.

The teams ranked to 1 to 4 will then proceed to the European Championship semi-finals on Tuesday September 6, with the winners progressing to the final on Saturday 10th, whilst the two losers of the semis will then meet to contest the European Plate, awarded to the third placed team.

The teams ranked from 5 to 7 will play each other twice in 40-minute games, the first round taking place on Tuesday September 6 and the second on Saturday 10th, to determine the final placings with the fifth placed team awarded the European Shield.

“The innovative new format gives each team the opportunity to test itself and could easily lead to some surprises,” said European Rugby League general manager, David Butler.

“The nations involved are really excited to try it out and we are anticipating a highly competitive series of matches across the three playing days as well as a terrific experience for those involved, many of whom could be playing in the 2025 World Cup.”

The teams will start arriving in Italy on September 1 and will be staying in the Bella Italia resort at Lignano Sabbiadoro where they will have access to training and recovery facilities.
